After being inspired by the thousands of works of art (including the Mona Lisa) at the amazing Musée du Louvre
and the spectacular views of Paris from high up in the Eiffel Tower
what better way could you find to express your creativity than on a Tauck Exclusive visit to a chocolatier for a hands-on opportunity to create (then taste) some scrumptious "chocolate art" (while parents sip a glass of wine)? And you can take your masterpiece with you when you leave!

WRITE TO US!

Happy kids make happy parents, what our families say about us.

I could not recommend this company enough. They were fantastic & so accommodating to my requests & requirements. We created a custom made tour itinerary after many many emails! They never lost patience with me & managed to create an itinerary which was perfect for us. Thank you so much Europe 4 Kids for enriching our time in Rome!

We had a wonderful tour in Athens with our two children ages 9 and 5. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and charming, bringing to life these historic places with activities along the way to enhance an understanding of the sights. He kept our children engaged and interested for the whole duration. We all learned so much and had fun too. This tour will be a treasured lifelong memory for our family!

We used Europe4Kids last year and were so impressed. This year, we had 2 full days in London and wanted to see major sites and Harry Potter themes throughout the city. Our guide, Laura, was amazing!!! Friendly, knowledgeable, kept the kids (and us) engaged with stories. Another successful travel experience with Europe4Kids!!!

So Much Fun!

❄✚ A magical winter atmosphere in London: Christmas At Kew is back. Over one million lights shine along a 2.7-kilometer route. But the bright and shiny magic also has its critics, who say that it is "wasteful, light-polluting kitsch". The event organizers counter these claims by pointing out that the generators are run on biodiesel, which reduces CO2 emissions by 90%. What's your take on that?

Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.

In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Excellent company and communication. They were able to put together trip last minute. Everything on the trip was amazing, hotel, trips, tour guide. It was everything i expected and beyond!

Our trip was perfectly organized. The hotels were fabulous, the guides for our tours were beyond our expectations, and every single aspect of the trip was carefully planned. Europe With Kids: Steps for a Successful European Family Vacation

Posted on Published: 06/04/2024

I absolutely love Europe. The first time I traveled there, I was captivated by the delicious food, the quaint towns, the Christmas markets , and the various cultures that can be found throughout the continent.

So, when I had children, I wanted to bring them to Europe as early as possible. But a European family vacation is both a time and money commitment, so you want to make sure you plan for it to be the best vacation possible.

Introducing your kids to foreign cultures, people, food, and landmarks can be such a rewarding experience, and will likely be one of the best family vacations. I absolutely recommend bringing your children there for at least one family trip to Europe.

Traveling with children to Europe can be so much fun – especially for older children. Here are our tips for visiting Europe with kids. Have you been on a European vacation?

Choosing the Right Age to Travel To Europe

The first thing you’ll need to do is figure out the right age to visit Europe. This depends upon what you are hoping to get out of your vacation.

If you want to travel to Europe and happen to have children with you, you can probably go when the kids are younger because you won’t be looking for them to completely understand everything they see.

But, if you want your kids to learn and see things that they may have heard about in school, it may be a good choice to wait until your children are older. One of the great things about visiting historical sites is to actually see them after learning about them in a classroom.

For us, we decided to wait until the kids were old enough to handle a long, overnight flight without too much difficulty. That ended up being when they were 10 and 11. Younger children may have some difficulty with a long flight.

We weren’t interested in flying to Europe with a toddler, although many do that with no issues. We just wanted it to be a little easier on us.

It’s a good idea to think about how your kids handle travel, and then make your decision based on that. You’ll want to plan the trip well in advance and make sure that you are set up for success. While it’s worth visiting Europe with the entire family, it’s important to make sure you have everything planned out.

Deciding Where to Go in Europe With Kids

Once you’ve decided when to take your kids, you’ll want to figure out where to go in Europe. It’s a huge continent with so many different options. The best destinations can vary depending on your preferences.

Perhaps you want to visit a spot with beautiful scenery, like Italy. Or maybe you’d prefer to go somewhere with rich history and ancient ruins, like Greece. Some families want to visit specific tourist attractions, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Tower of London in London, or Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, which looks like a castle from a fairy tale.

If you don’t have a very specific destination in mind, think about whether you want to go to only one place, or tour several different cities/countries. That will determine how long you need to go, and how much preparation you need to do in advance.

For our first trip to Europe, we wanted to go to Italy. We love Italian food, and my husband’s mother is from Italy. The kids had heard so much about it and wanted to see it. My husband and I also wanted to travel there, so it was the perfect spot.

For our second trip, we decided on Greece . My son and daughter had learned about ancient Greece in school and we felt that it was the perfect timing for a trip to visit.

Both kids wanted to go there as well. We went to both Athens and two of the Greek Islands (Santorini and Crete).

The next year, we decided on England and France . Although my husband and I had both visited several times, the kids wanted to see both of those countries, as well as all of the popular monuments and attractions (we also went to Disneyland Paris, which they enjoyed). London and Paris and two of the best European cities for seeing popular landmarks, including the Palace of Versailles, the London Eye, the Eiffel Tower, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and more.

After taking a few years off, we went on our next European trip with the kids. We visited Portugal, which has become my favorite place in Europe.

We enjoyed some time in the best cities in the country. Our trip included Porto , where we did a bridge climb and saw a gorgeous train station, Lisbon, where we saw some beautiful sites, and the Algarve, where we enjoyed some beautiful cave tours . Portugal also has some of the best hotels for families.

If you don’t know which country to visit, you may consider sticking with England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland, where English is spoken. They are much easier trips because of that and there are also easy flights from the US (especially England).

Involving kids in the decision-making process is always a good idea, especially if your kids are old enough. Making them part of the process can make them feel responsible for the trip.

On our most recent European trip, we decided to do a more adventurous trip to Northern Italy and Switzerland. This trip included ziplining in the Alps in Zermatt and an ice cave and a ZipFlyer at Mount Titlis .

European countries that you may consider include:

  • The rest of the United Kingdom
  • Switzerland

Consider a Guided Tour to Europe With Kids

If you are a regular reader here, you know that we love traveling with Adventures by Disney to Europe. While you can plan your own trip to Europe, a guided tour may be a great option if you aren’t sure where to start.

Guided tours allow you to see so many different things in one trip. You won’t need to worry about figuring out the best time to visit specific attractions, or how to avoid crowds. Instead, your guides will have everything planned for you.

You also won’t need to decide where to stay or how to get from one place to another. Everything will be arranged in advance. You just have to show up when they tell you to. My kids have also made some great friends on our tours and have always enjoyed hanging out with other kids. Some guided tour companies, like Adventures by Disney, cater specifically to families traveling with kids.

Another child-friendly option is to take a European cruise. A cruise can make it easy to see multiple countries without too much effort. Instead of wasting time on a bus, you can enjoy all of the cruise ship amenities while you are traveling to the next spot on your itinerary.

If you do decide to take a European cruise, you will need to plan out all of your excursions in advance. That way, you can take advantage of all of the fabulous locations you’ll be seeing. It can be easier, especially if traveling with young children because you won’t have to switch hotels to see multiple places.

Travelers who don’t want to do a European cruise or a guided tour may consider doing individual tours. We recommend searching Get Your Guide to find local tours in the area. Be sure to check reviews before booking.

You can also get a rental car and drive around yourself. That can always be more stressful, but you’ll be completely flexible with plans. Compare rental car prices here .

Planning Your Trip to Europe With Kids

Of course, if you want to plan your own trip from start to finish, that is absolutely an option. You’ll just want to dedicate some time to planning because there’s a lot you’ll want to do before you go.

Once you find the perfect destination for the whole family, you’ll want to figure out when to travel. If you have older kids, it can be more challenging to find a good time to travel for a longer period.

For us, we struggle to find a time when the kids aren’t in sports, school, or theater. We usually end up with just two or three weeks to choose from, typically in the summer months.

Check the weather during your planned vacation time. Summer is extremely popular in Europe, and some destinations can be very hot. We were in Greece in August, and it was pretty brutal. We still loved that trip and would do it again. But it was important to be prepared.

You’ll also want to think about how much time you want to spend in each location if visiting multiple spots. I’ve always wanted more time in every place I’ve visited on our European trips. Try to balance the amount of time in each place with the amount of places you go to.

If at all possible, it’s a great idea to spend about two weeks in Europe. That’s sometimes difficult with our schedule, but we never go for less than 9 nights (including the red-eye flight there). You’ll want to have plenty of time to enjoy your trip.

If you haven’t already been to the spots you are visiting, you’ll want to do some research. You will want to figure out what hotels to stay in and what attractions to visit. You’ll also want to get any tips on when to visit. For instance, you’ll probably want to visit some destinations early in the morning. In other cases, like with the London Eye, you may have the option to purchase tickets that let you skip the line.

Start to fill in your daily schedule, then research ticket options and tickets for each attraction. Purchase tickets in advance in cases where you need to book a specific time for your visit. When we went to the Buckingham Palace State Rooms , I purchased those tickets weeks in advance to ensure availability.

You can get great deals on attraction passes by purchasing a Go City pass for the following cities. You’ll pay one fee and get admission to multiple attractions:

You’ll also want to figure out how you’ll get from place to place. Will you use public transportation? Or perhaps you’ll need to rent a car? If so, you’ll want to make sure that your license and insurance will be valid for your rental.

Choosing a great family hotel is also important. Hotel rooms in Europe tend to be smaller than those in the United States, so keep that in mind when looking for the perfect spot. Location can be important, especially in cities, so it’s a good idea to look at reviews and/or ask friends for recommendations.

In some places, we’ve had to get two connecting hotel rooms to accommodate our family of four. American chains can often have more amenities than US travelers are used to. But there are also some great, charming, family-friendly local hotels and inns as well.

Booking airfare to Europe is my least favorite thing to do. There are often many confusing options with various layovers. Before you purchase, consider booking an extra day at the start of your trip, just to get acclimated to the time change.

I have a really hard time sleeping on planes, so I often need a full day to recuperate before I’m ready to start touring. Be sure to get your seating assignments together, even if you have to pay extra to do that in advance. You won’t want to be separated from your kids for a flight of that length.

Ocean in Elounda

Final Research For Your Trip

Once you have the essentials planned and booked, you’ll still have a few things that you want to do. You may consider booking some tours – either city tours or tours of specific attractions (separate from the admission). You can price out some tours here .

While some of these things can be purchased once you are in Europe, it may be easier to research before you go. You may also consider a day trip to other locations, and that’s easier to plan.

Before you go, you’ll also want to do a little bit of research on money. Determine whether you’ll want to bring foreign currency with you, or if you’ll get some when you are there.

We typically use the ATMs in the country we are visiting. But I’ll occasionally bring along foreign currency, especially if I have some leftovers from a prior trip.

Because you’ll probably want to use your credit cards on your trip, you’ll want to check to see what the foreign transaction fees are. They can add up, but many cards won’t charge a fee. You should also contact your banks to make sure that they know you are traveling overseas.

Tipping customs vary by country. Before you leave, find out if tipping is customary at your destination.

Well in advance of your trip, you should also review your documentation. Keep in mind that many countries will require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your trip.

Positano on the Amalfi Coast

Packing for Your Trip to Europe

I am always stressed packing for an overseas trip. It’s important that we have everything we need, especially if it’s something that may be challenging to find at our destination. Using vacation packing lists is a great way to ensure you don’t forget anything. Look at the weather at your destination, as well as your plans, to make sure you have the right type of clothing packed.

It’s also important that you pack any toiletries and medications you may need. I tend to overpack these types of things for a trip to Europe with kids.

You may also need some other things (see our European packing list here):

  • Lightweight backpack
  • Portable charger
  • European adaptors (make sure you have the right one – England, for instance, uses a different one than continental Europe). This is my favorite adaptor .
  • Comfortable shoes

A Note on Food Allergies and European Travel

My daughter is allergic to nuts and my son is allergic to peas. While we don’t let their allergies stop us from traveling, we make sure that we are very careful about what they eat when we are in Europe. We always err on the side of caution, and follow the motto “Better safe than sorry”.

Before leaving, look at the most popular dishes of your destination to see if they contain allergens. During our trip to England and France this summer, we were most concerned about the mashed peas in England and the macarons in France.

We also have laminated cards made in the language of our destination explaining their allergies. We hand these to our servers so there’s no confusion in our communication.

I also pack cereal bars in our carry-ons for the flight. I’m super cautious about airline food, so I usually make sure that my daughter has safe food for our flights.

While this may seem like a lot of steps to planning a perfect trip to Europe with kids, it’s the best way to make sure you have a successful trip. Have you been to Europe with kids?

Traveling slowly and giving a reasonable time for a few select countries is a much more rewarding and memorable way of discovering Europe than hopping all over the place.

One of the biggest differences between Europeans generally and Americans is the approach to customer service. Your waiter will not tell you their name and come over every five minutes to "check if everything is ok." Waiters take your order, bring it to you, and leave you be until you're ready to leave. They won't bring you the cheque until you ask them to. It’s considered rude to rush people out of a restaurant by bringing them the cheque since in Europe a meal is more an event rather than just a "eat and move on" deal.

What is the best way to get there?

International airports are located in all major cities in Europe.

Do I need a visa?

Travelers can obtain a single visa allowing access and free movement between all 26 countries of the Schengen zone. If you’re visiting from overseas, use  Schengen Visa info  to see if you need a visa.

For countries outside this zone, including the U.K., Ireland, and many countries in Eastern Europe, contact the respective country’s embassy to find out if you need a visa.

When is the best time to visit?

Any time: Europe is a year-round destination. Summer travelers flock to the beaches of Spain, Greece, and the south of France; while winter visitors hit the ski slopes in the Alps or tour Europe’s famous Christmas Markets. The summer months are often the busiest for city sightseeing—a spring or autumn visit means fewer crowds and often lower prices on flights and accommodation.

Festivals take place throughout the seasons in Europe, with top events including Munich’s Oktoberfest (Sept), Venice Carnival (Feb-Mar), Cannes Film Festival (May), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Aug), and La Tomatina Festival in Valencia (Aug).

Low-cost airlines operate throughout Europe and flying is often the cheapest way to hop between cities.

There are high-speed trains linking cities all across Europe. The most cost-effective option is a Eurail or Interrail Pass, which offers unlimited train travel. Passes are available for individual countries or you can get a Global Pass valid in 33 countries. There’s also the Eurostar train between England and France.

Most countries operate their own nationwide bus companies. Eurolines and Flixbus operate low-cost long-distance bus services to 29 European countries.

Car and passenger ferries operate between the destinations along the English Channel, the Baltic Sea coast, and the Mediterranean coast.

ridesharing

Uber , BlaBlaCar , and Bolt are available in many European cities on your smartphone.

Most European countries use a standard voltage of 220–240 V and the standard frequency is 50Hz. The plug has two round pins. Exceptions include the UK and Ireland, which use a plug with three pins. For plug types, you can reference the international guide here.

What is the currency?

The Euro is used by 19 countries within the Eurozone. Other countries each have their own currencies. Although some non-Euro countries may accept the Euro, this practice is typically restricted to tourist areas, and you will need to use the local currency throughout Europe.

Are ATMs readily accessible?

Are credit cards widely accepted, how much do i tip.

Although tipping etiquette varies from country to country, in general, tipping is not obligatory in Europe. A tip for exceptional service is always appreciated, typically between 10-20%. Some restaurants, especially in major cities, may add a service charge, so it’s worth checking the bill.

Are there local customs I should know?

In almost all European countries, the federal legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 18 years old. In some countries, the age for purchasing beer and wine is lower. An exception is Iceland, where the legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 20 years old.

Public transport

Allow others to disembark before boarding, don’t take up more than one seat, and stand to offer seating to pregnant women or someone with a disability. In many cities, it is customary to stand to the right on escalators to allow others to pass.

Try to speak the language

The EU has 24 official languages and even more languages are spoken throughout the rest of Europe. Although you will often find someone who speaks English, especially in major cities and tourist areas, it is polite to enquire if the person speaks English instead of assuming. Where possible, try to learn a few words such as ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank you’ in the local language as a sign of respect.

Keep your VAT receipts

Most European countries add TVA or VAT (value-added tax) to the purchase of goods and services. This sales tax can often be refunded for international travelers, so hold onto your receipts and fill out the claims form at customs on departure.

Always greet people

A courteous, formal greeting in the local language is always appreciated—this includes shop attendants, wait staff, hotel staff, and drivers. However, Europeans, in general, are more reserved than some other cultures, so don’t expect strangers to smile at you in the street or strike up a conversation.

Don’t talk loudly in public

Although customs vary from country to country, in most European cultures, this is considered ugly and rude.

We went on a trip to Europe 3 years ago and never left. Our kid's life is way better here than it was in the US.

  • My family and I went on an open-ended trip to Europe, and we ended up buying a house here.
  • We love living in Portugal — life is relaxed and our son gets lots of time outdoors.
  • Although we will always have ties to the United States, we love living in Europe.

Insider Today

In January 2019, my father died. For months, I was in a fog and, in an effort to lift our spirits, I asked my husband how he felt about an open-ended trip to Europe.

It was the perfect escape since our son is homeschooled, and we have flexible work schedules as writers and composers.

He was all in, so we took a one-way flight to Italy and explored the United Kingdom and Europe for six months while we worked and schooled in between.

We didn't end up returning to the US.

We fell in love with Europe and ended up buying a house in Portugal

During our trip, we spent a long time in the Netherlands, where we learned more about the culture. We were especially impressed with how independent the children were.

We witnessed kids as young as 4 years old bike themselves to school past our rental house almost daily. It was far from the reality in the US, and this stop on our trip is where we began learning just how great Europe could be .

We planned to return to the US in early 2020, but then the coronavirus pandemic hit worldwide. We felt scared and confused, and going home seemed less of an option as some borders closed.

Related stories

So, we extended our stay in Europe and then headed to Portugal, a place we were already familiar with.

We began renting a charming Airbnb in the Portuguese countryside and extended our trip so many times that the owners asked if we wanted to buy the house.

Affordable home prices in rural Portugal coupled with extremely low interest rates for mortgages allowed us to say yes.

Life began to feel calm and somewhat secure.

While my friends posted on social media about fighting in the supermarkets to buy toilet paper in the US, we were feeling OK. Our community was incredibly kind, and neighbors brought us food from their farms.

This temporary situation eventually became our new reality. We started to realize living in Europe may actually be a good idea for our family.

It's been 3 years since our 'accidental move,' and we have no regrets

We began referring to this journey as our "accidental move." We'd left for vacation with three suitcases, and suddenly, we were building an unexpected life in our new home in a new country.

In the US, life felt fast-paced and hurried, but moments feel savored here. Although it was initially challenging to adapt to, I now embrace the rhythm and want it for my son.

Witnessing many advantages — the ease of homeownership , exceptional healthcare, a safe environment, and a warm embrace by the community — solidified our decision to stay.

Here, our son thrives with ample outdoor time, easy access to healthy food, guaranteed medical care, and the constant opportunity to explore new cultures.

Though the US will always technically be home, and we'll always be connected to it through our chosen academic structure, our jobs, mandatory taxes, and our house there, we've certainly found Europe to be our sanctuary where we feel most peaceful.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Tour to Spend Time with Her Family and Friends: 'I Am Completely Heartsick'

"I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," the 'Atlas' star wrote to fans on her website

european tour with family

Elizabeth Leonard is Managing Executive Editor and West Coast Bureau Chief for PEOPLE, where she's worked in leadership positions across the brand's entertainment and human interest verticals for 25 years.

Jennifer Lopez 's summer tour is no longer happening.

On Friday, May 31, Live Nation announced that the singer's This Is Me... Live is canceled because she is "taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends."

Lopez released a statement to her fans on her OntheJLo website and explained why it was a tough decision to make.

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary," Lopez, 54, wrote.

She continued, "I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time
"

The tour was originally set to run from June to August, in support of her latest studio album This Is Me...Now , which dropped in February.

Fans who have already purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will automatically be refunded. For those who purchased through third-party resale sites, fans will need to reach out to the point of purchase for more details.

In addition to spending time with her close circle, Lopez is currently celebrating the release of her Netflix film Atlas , which hit the streaming service on May 24 and has already reached No. 1 in 55 countries.

This announcement comes on the heels of reported marital issues for Lopez and husband Ben Affleck . Though they were pictured together Thursday , the couple have been living separately in Los Angeles while  experiencing a strain in the marriage , sources have told PEOPLE. She's been busy preparing for the now-canceled tour and promoting  Atlas,  while Affleck has been filming for  The Accountant 2 . The two famously rekindled their relationship from the early 2000s in 2021 and  married in 2022 .

Earlier this month, Lopez posed in front of  Netflix’s billboard in Los Angeles extolling people to not mess with her .

Together, Netflix and Lopez released an Instagram clip that began with her riding inside a car.

“So a bunch of people were messaging me yesterday telling me about this billboard that Netflix put up for  Atlas ,” Lopez said in the reel. “So I want to go see it for myself.”

In a recent interview with PEOPLE , Lopez spoke about the similarities and differences between herself and the movie’s character.

"We are so different because she's like ... doesn't wear any of her emotions,” she said. “She's so closed off and I am too much emotion sometimes."

"But at the same time we are both very strong and sure of what they feel," continued Lopez. "At times. She was very sure. She was like, 'This is what's happening, please listen to me. Please tell me.' And felt very misunderstood at times. I can also relate to that a bit."

Ryan Fox continues sporting dynasty with Seve Ballesteros Award

Ryan Fox receiving the Seve Ballesteros Award, after being voted the DP World Tour’s Player of the Year for 2022, caps a remarkable 12 months worthy of a man from a family with a renowned sporting pedigree.

His grandfather on his mother's side was Merv Wallace, a two-time captain of New Zealand's Test cricket team who saw the outbreak of the Second World War limit his Test career to just 13 caps.

Most informed observers believe he would have won many more were it not for the war, and Wallace also went on to coach New Zealand in the mid-1950s.

Fox is not wanting for sporting genes on his paternal side either, with father Grant winning 46 caps for the All Blacks and being part of the team that won the inaugural rugby union World Cup in 1987.

He was just short of five months old when his dad lifted the Webb Ellis Cup on home soil in Auckland and while he admits his memories of Fox Snr's playing career are sparse, sport was in Fox's blood from a young age.

"One of my first ever memories that I can remember was my grandad - my mum's dad - bowling to me in the backyard," he wrote for the DP World Tour's Player Blog in 2017.

"I have vivid memories from when I was three or four of him bowling to me in the garden and teaching me how to pick the different type of spin deliveries - the wrong-un, the leg spinner, the off spinner.

"He wasn't a bowler, he was a batter, but he was really keen to teach me the art of watching the ball out of the bowler's hand. So, I suppose, right from the start, I was getting to grips with some hand-eye co-ordination."

Fox had plastic children's golf clubs as well but growing up, it was mainly cricket and rugby, with cricket his "first real sporting love".

By the time he got to university, however, having already given up rugby after "a few too many concussions", cricket was no longer at the forefront of his ambitions and his sporting attention switched to golf.

Already playing off two, he hired his first coach and, with his dad on the bag, he set off on a career that would see him turn professional in 2012.

He has admitted there were tough spells in those early years and he was almost ready to give up the game in 2013 before a talk with his dad and a change of approach led to a fifth-placed finish at the Australian Masters, where Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Vijay Singh made up the top three.

With his card secured, Fox did not look back on his home PGA Tour of Australasia, winning the Western Australian Open in 2014 and the Queensland PGA Championship in 2015.

A Major Championship debut came at The Open Championship in July 2015, with Fox finishing in a tie for 49th after coming through qualifying, and just a week after starring at St Andrews, he won his first European Challenge Tour title at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge.

But there was to be heartbreak at the end of the campaign as he finished 16th on the Rankings, missing out on a DP World Tour card by just one spot.

Ryan and Grant Fox

Fox admits it took him around six months to get over that disappointment and after playing the first half of 2016 with limited starts on the DP World Tour, he returned to the Challenge Tour in June, registering two top tens and winning the Tayto Northern Ireland Open in Partnership with Ulster Bank the following month.

There would be no heartbreak this time around as he finished fourth in the Rankings to graduate and he soon defined himself on the DP World Tour as a man for the big stage.

He had five top tens in his maiden season, with three of them coming in consecutive Rolex Series events in July as he comfortably kept his playing privileges.

More Rolex Series drama was to follow in 2018 as Russell Knox holed a 40-footer to get into a play-off against Fox at the Irish Open and then another to win it, but a maiden victory was not far away.

A 3&2 victory over Adrian Otaegui brought him a win close to home at the 2019 ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth but within two years, everything would change.

First came the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant that Fox did not play between the WGC - Mexico Championship and the Betfred British Masters in 2020, a hiatus of almost exactly five months.

When he arrived back on Tour in the UK - without wife Anneke, who stayed in New Zealand - he embarked on a schedule of 11 events in 12 weeks as he aimed to earn enough points to secure himself a second Olympics appearance.

He did just that but with the Games suspended for a year, he returned to New Zealand in October and on December 18 became a father with the birth of daughter Isabel.

The 2021 season then became both a balancing act and a lottery as he sought to play enough events to keep his card while also enabling himself to get home with strict entry and quarantine requirements in New Zealand.

After playing the Desert Swing, he returned home but was back in May, although Anneke and Isabel did not join him until July at The Open.

"It worked really well, and to be honest my mental state changed pretty significantly the week of The Open," he wrote in a second Player Blog in October 2021.

"Having them with me, and able to travel with me, made a massive difference to my year."

With his card secured and a managed isolation and quarantine spot secured, the Foxes headed home after the Mallorca Golf Open in October, with Ryan facing a hotel quarantine for the third time.

Heading in to 2022, much of the world was returning to normal, although Fox knew he would face another spell of quarantine when he next went home.

But at least he would be able to spend this one with a recent memory of victory as it came soon after he claimed his long-awaited second title at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic. It was a win that would kickstart his remarkable 2022.

He led wire-to-wire at Al Hamra Golf Club as he sealed a comfortable five-shot victory and was delighted to return to New Zealand to see his family, having missed Isabel's first steps while he was away.

"I was definitely thinking about the family coming down the last couple of holes, it's pretty big for them," he said after his win. "They've got to come over to Europe every year and it's a little bit harder with a little one now and this win makes it a little bit easier for them to do that.

"I'm a bit disappointed that I missed her walking and I've got ten days in a hotel when I get home to think about that as well and I'm very much looking forward to seeing them when I get out late February."

After two months at home, he returned to the DP World Tour and hit a run of consistency that would keep him right in the hunt to top the Rankings until the end of the season.

He would secure six top tens in eight events, including finishing second at the Soudal Open, Dutch Open - after losing a play-off - and Horizon Irish Open.

That form cooled throughout the heat of summer but, in early October, Fox was a winner again, claiming an emotional one-shot victory on the Old Course at St Andrews at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in front of his mum, dad, Anneke and Isabel.

The win was made even more poignant as Fox turned his thoughts to former team event partner and Australian cricketing great Shane Warne, who passed away in March.

"It means a lot," he said. "To be honest the only person I can really think of at the moment is Warne.

"He meant a lot to me and this event and was a great mate. It's a terrible shame he's not here.

"I'm going to enjoy celebrating this one with the family."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ryan Fox (@ryanfoxgolfer)

A tie for fourth at the Mallorca Golf Open and a second place at the Nedbank Golf Challenge meant Fox headed into the season-ending DP World Tour Championship with a chance to win it all, although the then 35-year-old took it all in his stride.

"I won't do anything different from what I've been doing all year," he said. "Just go out and try to beat the golf course and see what happens in that sense and that's served me pretty well and hopefully I can do the same thing this week."

A 19th-paced finish at Jumeirah Golf Estates saw Fox finish the season second in the Rankings behind Rory McIlroy, with two wins, four runner-up finishes and four other top tens after a stunning season.

He teed off in Abu Dhabi 205th in the Official World Ranking and picked the ball out of the cup on Sunday at the Earth Course ranked 27th, earning himself a debut at the 2023 Masters Tournament.

That is just one of many things that Fox will have to look forward to in the year ahead but looking back, the history books will always see 2022 as the season he was voted by his fellow members as the winner of the Seve Ballesteros Award.

Our Europe family trips

Europe family highlights, why choose us.

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.

Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh wins the discus throw in an elite field at the European championships

ROME (AP) — Former world champion Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia won the discus throw amid a world-class field on the opening night of the European athletics championships Friday.

Ceh’s throw reached 68.08 meters to put him ahead of Lukas Weisshaidinger of Austria (67.70) and Mykolas Alekna (67.48), the Lithuanian who broke the nearly 30-year-old world record in April .

Ceh won the world title in 2022 and took silver behind Sweden’s Daniel Stahl at last year’s worlds.

“I finally got my self-confidence back,” Ceh said after receiving a congratulatory kiss from his girlfriend, Estonian hammer thrower Anna Maria Orel. “Everybody was talking about Alekna.
He is the world record holder so everybody wants to beat him. I think it is going to be something big in Paris.”

With less than 50 days before the Paris Olympics , many athletes are using the Euros as a warmup, or a test rehearsal. Most don’t want to peak in Rome but are saving their best for Paris.

Stahl (66.84) finished fourth.

Alekna said he “felt tired after so many events.

“I need some rest,” Alekna added. “It is a lesson. I was not surprised by Kristjan’s performance, he is a good thrower and he deserves it.”

Olympic champion Antonella Palmisano and Valentina Trapletti finished 1-2 in the 20-kilometer race walk, after which Palmisano put a tiara on her head to celebrate before her home fans.

“I had been a bit sad because there’s little attention paid to race walking. But today I saw the fans really enthusiastic,” Palmisano said.

Lyudmila Olyanovska of Ukraine passed Laura Garcia-Caro of Spain in the final steps to take bronze.

Garcia-Caro was already celebrating an anticipated medal and raised her arm just when Olyanovska caught her by surprise and passed her.

There was also an Italian gold in the 5,000, with Nadia Battocletti clocking a championship record 14:35.29.

Ireland won the 4×400 mixed relay for its first gold at Euros since since Sonia O’Sullivan swept the 5,000 and 10,000 in 1998.

In the women’s shot put, Jessica Schilder and Jorinde Van Klinken led a 1-2 for the Netherlands ahead of Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany.

The six-day championships end next Wednesday.
