5 Questions About Kenya Family Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

family safari holidays kenya

Is a Kenyan family safari recommended?

“Of course, it’s a privilege for children to be able to go on safari. When planned carefully, you’ll find that a safari with kids is an enriching experience for both them and you. Nothing stimulates the senses more than spending time in the bush and children, with their inquiring minds, possibly benefit most. Kenya’s wilderness, in particular, is the perfect choice for a family safari. And the high density of animals makes wildlife viewing easy and accessible for young ones with shorter attention spans. There are plenty of child-friendly accommodation options, and camping is a big winner too. There is no better way to introduce your kids to a bush holiday.”

Where should I go in Kenya with kids?

“Wherever you go in Kenya will be interesting and exciting for your children. Top of the list is the Masai Mara National Reserve. You can time your visit to catch the annual wildebeest migration, when millions of hoofed animals migrate towards greener pastures. Seeing the wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River is one of the most thrilling wildlife encounters ever. There is lots of predator action at this time too. You’ll definitely see four of the Big Five here, but rhino, although present, is not always easy to find. Therefore, you should make a stop at Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is centered around the scenic Rift Valley lake, and both white and black rhino are common here. Most kids love elephants and there is no better place to see these giants in big numbers than at Amboseli National Park. You’ll see some seriously big tuskers here, and if you’re lucky the sky might open up to create that picture-perfect moment of elephants in front of Mt Kilimanjaro. Slightly more off the beaten track is Samburu National Reserve. This is the place to see dry-country animals, such as gerenuk, Beisa oryx and the handsome reticulated giraffe. You’ll see local people herding their cattle on the outskirts of the reserve, and a visit to a traditional Samburu homestead is always a big hit with kids.”

Is it safe to go to Kenya with children?

“Kenya is generally a very safe country. This is the case too when traveling with children. As long as you book with a reputable company, there is no need for any concerns. Note though that for safety reasons there are age limits for certain activities, such as walking safaris. Your guide will look out for your family’s safety, but parents obviously have a responsibility to keep a close eye on their children too. Therefore it is a good idea to choose your accommodation carefully; some places are more child-friendly than others. Things to look out for include whether the accommodation is fenced or not and whether there is direct river access. As anywhere in the world, there is crime in Kenya’s big cities, and Nairobi in particular has a bad reputation. Walking around the city unguided with your children is not recommended. However, an overnight stay and a guided city tour or excursion to one of the city’s many attractions is totally fine. Otherwise, you can safely get around with a registered taxi.”

How old should the children be to go on a safari?

“Compared to some other safari destinations, there are not many limitations on traveling with children in Kenya. Some lodges and hotels have age restrictions, and there might be age limits on tours. Always check with operators before booking. All packages on SafariBookings indicate applicable age limits. Group tours usually have a minimum age, but when booking a private tour, most operators are flexible. These limitations aside, you should also consider whether your children are ready for a safari in Kenya. There is no point paying a lot of money for a holiday that your children are too young to appreciate. Most safaris entail sitting in the car quite a lot. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend taking toddlers on a safari in Kenya. Children should have quite a mature attention span and ideally a pre-existing interest in nature. As a rule, children that have been exposed to and enjoy bush camping and other such outdoor activities will be ready for a Kenyan safari at a younger age than children without any such experience or interest. Most children over about eight years old will gain a lot from a Kenyan safari if planned carefully.”

Are there special activities for children on a Kenyan family safari?

“A game drive is the ultimate activity on a safari in Kenya with kids. Giving kids a pair of binoculars or a little camera to use all helps to engage them. While game drives are most productive in seeing lots of wildlife, it can get a bit monotonous for children after a while. Ideally, you should break up your time with some other activities. A nature walk is ideal to stretch the legs and focus on small things that are easily overlooked on drives, such as animal tracks and insects. A real highlight for old and young alike is a balloon safari. Toddlers aren’t allowed, but for kids over three years old, a flight over the wide-open savannah of the Masai Mara is an unforgettable experience. Some lodges offer star-gazing after dinner. To look at the star-studded sky with the sounds of the African bush around you is pure magic. There are some great activities for kids in Nairobi too. A trip to the David Sheldrick Trust/Elephant Orphanage is always a winner. But be warned, your little ones might convince you to adopt an elephant before you leave. For a small fee, you’ll get an adoption certificate and regular updates on the calf you’ve sponsored. Equally entertaining for kids is a visit to the Giraffe Centre. The center is a breeding place for endangered Rothschild giraffes. It’s great for conservation and lots of fun too. Imagine the look on your child’s face when standing on a platform and feeding a full-sized giraffe at eye level.”

START PLANNING YOUR FAMILY SAFARI TO KENYA

Kenya is a very established and superb family holiday destination, offering a fantastic balance of incredible game viewing, varied and exciting activities , rewarding cultural experiences and warm personal hosting. Whatever the age of your children, we can design your Kenya family holiday to suit your individual requirements, though we would advise that a truly great time for a family safari holiday in Kenya is when your kids are over the age of around seven to eight years old.

If you wish to include some time on the beach, the Kenya coast offers everything from affordable resort hotels to private beach villas and exclusive beach retreats, or you can consider travelling further afield to the beaches of Zanzibar, Mauritius or Seychelles.

family safari holidays kenya

WHY CHOOSE KENYA AS YOUR FAMILY HOLIDAY DESTINATION

Beyond offering some of the best game viewing in Africa, Kenya is a very practical family holiday destination, for several key reasons:

  • Kenya can generally offer very good value for money, especially ‘safari and beach’ combinations
  • It is easy to move around Kenya which has a good tourist infrastructure, especially on short internal flights which cut out the need for long drives
  • There are many family-friendly safari camps and lodges in Kenya , often with specific family accommodation options
  • There are convenient beach options for combination holidays, both within Kenya and further afield
  • Children of all ages will nearly always be able to undertake game drives (though other activities may be age restricted)
  • Most safari vehicles in Kenya accommodate 4 to 6 guests so a key part of a Kenya family safari could be having your own exclusive vehicle for game drives, without paying extra

Kenya also offers incredibly warm hospitality and friendly service from managers, guides and camp staff. One of the genuine benefits of travelling with children is the exposure they have to different cultures and ways of life. African people are natural lovers of children, and in addition to your children forming bonds with and learning from your local guide, it is not uncommon to find camp staff entertaining your kids with local games, cooking or enquiring conversation. Kenyan safari hospitality is as family-friendly as it comes, whilst genuine cultural opportunities visiting local schools or villages can easily be included in most safari itineraries.

BEST TIME FOR VIEWING WILDLIFE

WHERE TO GO IN KENYA WITH KIDS

Whilst Kenya offers a number of different wildlife regions to consider, the Masai Mara is Kenya’s most amazing safari area. If you are looking for a shorter ‘wow’ safari before heading to the beach, a Masai Mara family safari is likely to be your best option. The beautiful open plains offer incredible game viewing and are home to the annual wildebeest migration from July to October. Even within a quick four day family safari, you are likely to see everything you hoped for.

For slightly longer safaris (six or seven nights), we highly recommend the Laikipia region in central Kenya in combination with the Masai Mara. The extensive Laikipia region includes a number of private big game conservancies as well as some exclusive wilderness and community areas which offer a multitude of different activities and experiences – from walking and horse-riding adventures to fly-camping, river ‘tubing’ and cultural experiences. Many properties in Laikipia have swimming pools and the landscape is very different to the Masai Mara.

Please click on the links below to explore Kenya’s superb safari regions, and do not hesitate to Contact Us to discuss the different areas and what may suit your family best.

Kenya with Kids: My Kenya Family Safari Guide

Kenya with Kids: My Kenya Family Safari Guide

Last Updated on May 24, 2024

Traveling Kenya with kids can be a life-changing experience for both you and your kids. Here is my guide to planning a perfect Kenya family safari.

For adventurous families, Kenya makes an excellent introduction to Africa. The country is home to world-class national parks, nature reserves, and pristine beaches. Plus, Kenya has improved its tourism infrastructure over the years and is now more family-friendly than ever.

Of all the 25 African countries I’ve been to, Kenya is definitely my favorite place in Africa to travel with kids .  Granted, roads in Kenya can be terrible and poverty is still an issue in Kenya. But there’s so much the kids can gain from a family trip to Kenya, whether it’s a lesson in compassion or learning knowledge on wildlife and geography.

Pack a sense of adventure and a positive attitude, and you’ll be sure to have an epic adventure in Kenya with kids. For those planning a Kenya family trip, here is my complete guide with the best things to do, where to stay and what to pack for Kenya with kids .

From my experience, trips that revolve around nature and wildlife are always a big hit with kids. Nature is the greatest playground for kids and Kenya sure has plenty of it.

Kenya is one of the top African countries for wildlife watching . It is home to the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, a stomping ground for thousands of animals migrating across its plains each year during the annual migration. For the ultimate Kenya family safari, come face to face with giant elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro in the backdrop at Amboseli National Park , or see thousands of flamingos fly above Lake Nakuru.

Kenya is also blessed with a stunning coastline — plan in some relaxing time on Diani Beach or cultural walks in the Swahili town of Lamu island in your Kenya itinerary , and your kids will thank you for it! Make sure to read this article on things you need to know before traveling to Kenya .

kenya with kids - lion spotted on kenya family safari

It is understandable to be concerned about safety in Kenya with kids. After all, Nairobi has a high crime rate and it has experienced several bombings in recent years. But you can easily avoid the city centre and stay in the quiet outskirts or Nairobi National Park (15-min drive from airport).

Beyond the big city, it is generally very safe in the national parks and nature reserves. You might be worried about your kids’ safety on safari after seeing videos of cheetahs jumping onto safari jeeps, but such things rarely happen. Animals usually prefer to keep their distance from human beings. As long as we don’t disturb the wildlife, they won’t disturb us.

The bigger issue is health and hygiene due to malaria and yellow fever risks and food contamination. It is mandatory to have the yellow fever vaccination to enter Kenya (you’ll be asked for proof). But one shot lasts a lifetime. Refer to my section on health in Kenya for details.

Kenya with Kids: My Kenya Family Safari Guide

Most nationalities including US, UK, EU and Canada citizens need a visa to enter Kenya. You can easily apply for an evisa online. Single-entry visas cost $51 and allow you to stay for 3 months. Note that there are several fraudulent evisa websites — this is the official evisa website.

Some nationalities (including mine!) do not a need a visa to travel Kenya. These include nationals from Singapore, Malaysia, San Marino, South Africa. Here is the full list.

Good news: Children aged 16 and below do not require a visa to enter Kenya, regardless of nationality.

The main gateway to Kenya is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBP), around 11 miles (18km) from Nairobi’s CBD.

I found an amazing deal online: Amsterdam – Nairobi – Seychelles and return for just under € 600 ($670). I learned about the airfare promo on Fly4Free.com and booked it way in advance.

You can generally find flights from New York to Nairobi via Istanbul for around US$750 return. For those in Europe, you can fly direct from London to Nairobi (9hours) for around $550 return.

The best time to travel Kenya  is from July to October , which are the best wildlife viewing months. The wildebeest migration usually reaches the Masai Mara in July and remains until October. But note that this is high season and certain parks can get crowded.

Rainy season runs from March to May, during which some lodges and camps close down. During high rainfall, it can be hard to see animals as they won’t need to go in search of water.

November to February are good times to visit Kenya , as prices are lower and showers don’t last long. We visited Kenya in December this time and had great weather. However, we didn’t see as many animals as I did the last time in Maasai Mara, because there were torrential rains right before we arrived and they caused quite a lot of flooding.

family safari kenya - seeing lions in masai mara

There’s a lot to do in Kenya for kids. I recommend spending at least two weeks in Kenya so you can explore at a comfortable pace.

I would advise planning 2-3 nights at each national park. Kids can get tired of safari if you schedule too many days at each camp. At the same time, you don’t want to be moving around too much and spending just 1 night at each place. Read more of my tips about going on African safari with kids .

Mix up your Kenya itinerary with some relaxation time along Kenya’s beautiful coast. Diani Beach is Kenya’s most popular beach town, but there are plenty of towns along the coast worth visiting, including Malindi, Nyali and Watamu.

* TIP : Maasai Mara is the best reserve in Kenya, but it’s a 6-hour drive from Nairobi and Lake Nakuru. To go somewhere nearer, the best alternative is Amboseli National Park, a 4-hour drive away.

How to Get Around Kenya with Kids

The best way to get from Nairobi to the coast is on the domestic airline, Kenyan Airways. It is affordable and fast. Return flights from Nairobi to Mombasa are around US$100. Direct flights from Nairobi to Lamu Island are around US$200.

It IS also possible to fly from Nairobi to Maasai Mara and other reserves on Safarilink. But it is expensive, with flights costing around US$350 return per person. Flying cuts down the travel time from 6 hours by road to just 40 minutes.

Roads in Kenya aren’t in the best condition and traffic around Nairobi is a nightmare. You would need a 4WD to drive into the national parks. Renting a Toyota Land Cruiser usually costs around $200-300/day.

I wouldn’t advise driving in Kenya with kids, unless you’re very experienced driving 4WD. My husband Alberto has driven in many countries, and even then, we decided to book transport with our lodge (which comes with a driver) as it cost the same as renting a 4WD.

What you can do instead is to book a safari lodge/camp and arrange a “road package” through them. The package includes a driver, 2 game drives per day during your stay at the lodge as well as pick-up and drop-off from any hotel in Nairobi.

Most lodges quoted us $150/day for a Toyota van and $250/day for a Land Cruiser safari jeep. We paid for the cheaper option and were fine for it. But for both options, you’ll only get a driver — not a wildlife guide who’s experienced in spotting animals! If you want a wildlife guide, book an all-inclusive safari tour . (More details here ).

kenya safari with kids is much cheaper on toyota vans

If it’s your first time on an African safari with kids , I recommend booking a safari package that includes an experienced wildlife guide. A guide knows where to spot the animals and can share lots of interesting information about each animal.

It’s also important to book with responsible tour companies that have policies in place to thread carefully. Check out this 8-day Kenya family safari from Intrepid Travel. It’ll be a great opportunity to travel with other families and your kids will make lifelong friends. The minimum age to join is 5.

Another trip worth checking out is this 8-day National Geographic Kenya safari trip from G Adventures. I’ve traveled with them many times (to Antarctica, Brazil, Nepal etc) and each trip has been epic! You can also combine Kenya with Tanzania, and join this Kenya and Tanzania camping safari. The minimum age to join is 12.

To save some money, we booked the safari lodges ourselves and arranged transport through them. These road packages still cost around US$150-250/day, but they include a driver, pickup from Nairobi, and 2 game drives/day.

If you’re on a tight budget, I suggest exploring Nairobi independently and booking budget safari tours departing from Nairobi. Note that these 3/4-day tours are usually camping safari. That means you’ll actually be camping and sleeping in small 2-person tents. This was what we did when we first backpacked East Africa 10 years ago.

There is just something so special about going on an African safari with kids — I will never forget the awe in my daughter’s kids when she saw her first giraffe. For kids like Kaleya who love animals, Africa is pure magic.

However, they are kids after all. Remind them to be patient on game drives — wildlife reserves are not zoos. Animals roam freely and sightings are not always guaranteed. You might also come across predators hunting or feeding on their catch, warn your kids that it can get graphic. Read my tips about going on safari with kids .

Game drives usually take place around dawn and sunset, as animals are the most active during these times. That means early wake-up calls at 5am. Because of the game drive schedule, your family will have lots of free time during the day. Bring cards or games to play as a family and reading materials.

kenya for kids - watching animals hunt

Since you will be spending lots of time at the lodge, it is important to find one that can keep the entire family happy. Don’t expect kids’ clubs or program at the lodge — you’ll be lucky to have a swimming pool. Remember you are in the wilderness after all!

When we traveled Swaziland and South Africa , we noticed that many safari lodges and reserves don’t take kids below 6, for safety reason. But this isn’t the case in Kenya — most lodges here are happy to take toddlers and babies.

Things to consider when choosing a lodge for your Kenya family safari:

  • Is it a fenced property? Kids aren’t allowed to wander on their own in an unfenced lodge and it can be unsafe at night when animals wander into the property.
  • Are there structural hazards? Certain lodges have open decks that plunge a few meters beneath.
  • Is there a shallow pool or play area?
  • Does the lodge have a waterhole? Animals often go to waterholes to drink, so you can easily see animals from the lodge if it has one.

Best Family Hotels in Kenya

The Emakoko is a beautiful lodge located just a 15-minute drive from the park’s east gate. It is surrounded by vast savanna and secretly ensconced in a steep valley. We felt like we were deep in the wilderness, even though we were just short drive away from Nairobi. Our spacious family cottage was huge and perfect for the three of us. Read our full review of The Emakoko . Check the rates.

There aren’t many lodges located inside the national park, but Lake Nakuru Lodge is one of the rare few. The ecolodge has been around for a while and it is in need of a revamp, but rooms are still well maintained. The best feature of our room was the balcony, where we could get unobstructed views of the lake and wildlife. The pool was also an excellent spot to hang out. Check the rates.

We found a great deal online for Sarova Mara Game Camp and paid around $400 in total for our 2-night stay. It was definitely a good deal as the big-scale family lodge had tastefully designed luxury tents that were big and spacious. It’s definitely a great place to stay for a Kenya family safari as there were many other families besides us. The lodge also had a swimming pool and good restaurant with international food. Check the rates here.

Located 500 m from the Indian Ocean, this property offers excellent value with its modern and spacious villas for only $60/night.We loved staying at Villa Mandhari — our 2-bedroom villa was huge, the outdoor pool was nice and big, with a lot of lounging space.  It’s also located in a peaceful and quiet area, perfect for families looking to relax after spending time in the bush. Check the rates here.

Located along the sandy Kizingo Beach, this rustic property stands at the tip of Lamu island where it meets the Indian Ocean. Kizingo has simple thatched-roof chalets all looking out to the ocean. I loved our veranda and swing bed. But the amenities are basic, and it’s more suitable for people who want a secluded place and go unplugged. Check the rates.

Things to Do in Kenya with Kids

One of the best Kenya activities for kids is this elephant orphanage . Elephant calves orphaned by poaching are brought here from all over the country to receive specialized treatment. Be warned: it gets crowded here as it’s opened to the public only 11am-12pm daily. Entrance is US$7.

You get to learn about each of the ridiculously cute baby elephants and some of them might even get up close to you. We booked a day tour for $35 and visited this along with the giraffe center and bomas.

Nairobi with kids - elephant orphanage

This giraffe centre , which protects the highly endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, combines serious conservation with fun activities. You can hand-feed or even kiss the giraffes from a raised wooden structure, which is quite an experience for both adults and kids! Entrance is US$15 and kids under 3 are $7.50. Book your day trip here.

Bomas of Kenya is a living museum celebrating the colorful tribes of Kenya. The complex has a recreated traditional village with homesteads or bomas , each one reflecting the culture of an ethnic group. There are also traditional dance performances everyday.

Within a 15-min drive from the international airport, you’ll be in the wide open grass plains and acacia bush of the national park. Established in 1946, Nairobi National Park was Kenya’s first. It’s home to four of the Big Five (except elephants) and chances of seeing them are high because of the small size. We had an excellent guide here and saw plenty of animals in just 2 days! If you are not staying here, you can book a day tour that will include pickup from your hotel.

Kenya Itinerary: 2 Weeks in Kenya

Lake Nakuru National Park is the best place in Kenya to see flamingos. Thousands of flamingos can be seen here massing in the warm alkaline water to feed on the abundant blue-green algae cultivated by their own droppings. As Europe starts cooling in October, migratory birds begin to arrive and remain in the area until April.

You can’t come to Kenya and not visit the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve . This massive grassland lies along the Great Rift Valley adjacent to Tanzania’s Serengeti. You are sure to see animals here, even during rainy season. We didn’t see quite as much as I did on my first trip, but we still spotted lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalos and many more animals. Visiting Maasai Mara with kids is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

spotting a mother lion in masai mara

If you want to do something special in Kenya with kids,  there’s nothing more amazing than going hot air ballooning over the Maasai Mara . I’ve been on a hot air balloon 5 times and every single time was amazing. Bring your whole family to see the animals from above and enjoy a special champagne breakfast in the bush. Prepare to part with $450 for the experience of a lifetime. Book the experience here.

Maasai Mara is the land of the Maasai people , an ancient nomadic people known to be warriors. Maasai men were once expected to kill a lion to prove their strength and manhood. Recognizable for their red robes and beaded jewelry, the Maasai now sustain themselves with tourism and livestock. We arranged to visit a Maasai village through our driver and gave a donation of $50. The visit was definitely a humbling experience for our kid.

Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the Amboseli National Park is best known for the spectacular landscapes. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Kids will get the chance to see the real-life setting of “Lion King” here.

With its 17 kilometers of flawless, soft white sand, Diani Beach is the most popular beach town in Kenya, for good reasons. The soft white sand and clean water definitely make this a great escape after being on safari. There’s a whole lot to do for the young ones: from playing on the beach to snorkeling   and kayaking.

Green turtles and unique coral gardens – the Watamu Marine National Park is an excellent place to visit for water babies. The park is part of a complex of marine and tidal habitats with rich and diverse bird life and dugongs. Besides water activities, you can also visit the nearby Gede Ruins, a 12th century Swahili village that was abandoned 600 years ago.

Founded in the 14th century, Lamu is the best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa . Crumbling old forts lie next to elegant rooftop cafés; narrow, cobbled streets wind past intricately carved front doors. Wander through Lamu’s Old Town , and you will find Indian, Persian, Omani and Portuguese influences visible throughout the coral stone houses and impressive mahogany doors.

What to Eat in Kenya with Kids

The traditional food of Kenya, is as mixed and diverse as its tribes, history and landscapes. Each tribal area has its own specialities, but below are some of the most common Kenyan dishes. If your kids are fussy eaters, they’ll be happy to know that most safari lodges serve western classics like spaghetti and pizzas.

  • Ugali — This cornmeal is the main staple of Kenyan food. The texture is similar to that of a dough. It is eaten at every meal (in a similar way you eat rice) and usually with stews and vegetables.
  • Irio — Another popular dish in Kenya, this mash peas and potato mix is hearty and heavy. It’s usually eaten with roasted meat (nyama choma).
  • Kenyan pilau rice — This is a flavorful spicy rice dish cooked with spices like cumin, cardamon, cinnamon, and cloves.
  • Kenyan stew — Kenyans love all kinds of stews: beef stew, goat stew, chicken stew or any other animal stew. The sauce usually has a tomato base and accented with the essential mchuzi mix!
  • Nyama Choma — The unofficial national dish of Kenya, nyama choma is roasted meat cooked on the barbecue. Goat and beef are the most common forms of nyama choma, but chicken (kuku choma) and fish (samaki choma) are also valid choices.
  • Fried fish — Along the coast, you’ll find fried tilapia fish everywhere, often served with tomato gravy and ugali or rice.

Wildlife watching involves lots of driving so pack a few   books on African wildlife  and kids’ binoculars to keep them engaged. Another kids’ travel gear that can come in very useful on safari is a   kids digital camera . My daughter was super excited to use hers on safari!

Game drives always take place in the early morning and evenings, which can get cold regardless of the time of the year. In Maasai Mara, morning temperatures can dip as low as 12°C/54°F and day time temperatures reach around 25°C/77°F. Be sure to pack layers, and a warm jacket for the morning drives. Choose khaki t-shirts and beige cargo pants to blend in with the surroundings.

  • Kids’ hiking shoes
  • Kids’ sandals or Keen water shoes
  • Kids’ safari hat
  • Kids’ down jacket
  • Kids’ fleece
  • Kids’ zip-off convertible pants
  • Earth-toned safari themed t-shirts
  • Long-sleeved pajamas to protect from mosquitos
  • Kids’ safari-themed underwear
  • Kids swimsuit
  • Kids’ breathable socks
  • Kids’ polarized sunglasses with strap
  • SPF 50 Sunscreen
  • Insect repellant with DEET
  • World travel kit stocked with medication
  • Head torch or flashlight
  • Kids’ binoculars
  • Kids digital camera
  • Canon EOS 60D camera
  • RAVPower portable power bank
  • 70-300mm Tamron lens
  • International plug converter
  • Kids’ books on African wildlife
  • iPad or Kindle with headphones for long car rides

It is required to have the yellow fever vaccination to enter Kenya (sometimes they check your yellow fever certification at the airport). Suggested vaccinations include meningitis, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and cholera. We got our daughter the yellow fever and hepatitis B vaccinations.

Firstly, get the vaccinations as early as you can, as some vaccinations come in doses. The yellow fever vaccination is easy to get (just consult your travel doctor) and one shot lasts a lifetime. Check the CDC website for more details.

Most parts of Kenya are malaria infected zones. Both adults and kids can take malaria preventative medication (the most popular being Malarone). Note that malaria pills aren’t advisable for young kids under 5 years old and they can have some side effects. Our 4.5-year-old can’t usually swallow pills, but we gave her the Malarone with a small chocolate each day. She ended up loving pill time!

Tap water in Kenya is not safe to drink. You can bring a  Steripen and sterilize tap water or just buy water there. We bought a big 5L drum of water at our first day, and it lasted the whole trip.

Food wise, we ate very well in the safari lodges we stayed at. Almost every safari lodge includes all meals with the stay. While on the road, it is usually easy to find simple meat and rice/ugali dishes or wraps and sandwiches. Kenya’s infrastructure has improved since 10 years ago (when I first visited) — now you can easily find clean diners at petrol kiosks and in towns.

Be careful about eating street food especially in Lamu, as hygiene can be an issue. Remember to pack anti-diarrhea medicine and rehydration pills in case of food poisoning (see my detailed Safari Packing List ).

kenya beach with kids - diani beach

In general, Kenya is cheap to travel, if you are traveling independently. Food is affordable in local eateries (less than $10 per meal) but expect to pay more in restaurants.

A Kenya family safari can be expensive though — prices for a 4-day camping trip starts from $450 per person. The average rate for a budget safari lodge is $100/night and midrange safari lodge is $300. These rates cover all your meals and game drives. We ended up spending around US$880 on an all-inclusive 2-night stay in Maasai Mara for our family of 3.

National park entrance fees are another hefty cost. They are charged per day and per person (which makes it very expensive!). Most safari tours don’t include these fees and you’ll also need to pay for kids above 3. Here are the entrance fees for the major national parks:

  • Nairobi National Park: $43 per adult, $22 per child per day
  • Lake Nakuru: $60 per adult, $35 per child per day
  • Maasai Mara: $70 per adult, $40 per child per day
  • Amboseli: $60 per adult, $35 per child per day

  • If it’s your first time on the African continent, manage your expectations and prepare your kids for that too. Infrastructure in Kenya has improved a lot since the first time I was there 10 years ago, but there are still certain things your kids might have to get used to, like hole-in-the-ground toilets and insects in the tents. It’s all part of the adventure!
  • Many curio shops along the highways have sparkling clean toilets (that’s how they try to draw in the tourists), and drivers tend to bring you here. You’re not obliged to buy anything if you don’t want to.
  • You will encounter many tourist touts when traveling in Kenya and some can be pushy. Just be polite and say no with a smile. Also, bargaining is part of their daily life, they expect you to bargain.
  • Lastly, roads in Kenya are not the best. Prepare your kids for bumpy rides and long, dusty drives. Also bring dramamine for motion sickness.
  • Don’t pack too much into your Kenya itinerary, as kids always require more down time. Slow down your pace and spend more time at each location.
  • Pack a sense of adventure and a dollop of patience as things move slowly in Kenya. Adopt the ‘hakuna matata” (no troubles) attitude and everything is going to be alright.

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Matthys van Aswegen

Safari Travel Planner

Kenya is a reasonably family-friendly safari destination, but it boasts few attractions that cater specifically to youngsters, and the threat of malaria might be a deterrent for families with young children. Most children will enjoy a few days on their family safari in Kenya but be warned that youngsters often become bored on long hot game drives.

family safari holidays kenya

For this reason, smaller and more contained safari destinations such as Lake Nakuru and Nairobi National Park might be preferable for families than the vast expanses of Tsavo, Masai Mara, and the like.

Highlights of a Family Safari in Kenya

The highlights of a family safari in Kenya are much the same as for solo travelers or couples in Kenya: the thrilling volume and variety of wildlife present in the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Lake Nakuru.

Luxury Resort in Mombasa Kenya

Of the beach resorts, Diani is probably the most family-friendly since its large package hotels tend to have an excellent range of on-site activities and amenities suited to all age groups, and offer plenty of excursions.

Travel Tips for a Family Safari in Kenya

  • It’s not advisable to enter malarial areas with children not yet old enough to safely take prophylactic drugs or be able to clearly communicate any malarial symptoms to their parents. Parents of younger children should check whether their hotel offers babysitting services.
  • Some private game lodges place a lower-end age restriction on children, while others specifically cater to younger children and provide them with alternative activities when adults are on game drives. Check this when you make a booking.
  • Self-drivers with children should avoid overambitious itineraries. Distances in Kenya are far longer than you might be used to at home, and roads tend to be rougher, so children might quickly become bored or carsick.

BEST AFRICA FAMILY SAFARI HOLIDAYS IN KENYA & TANZANIA A Bond With the Wildlife and Each Other

Children playing football in a safari lodge

Why are families a natural fit for wildlife safaris? And why do our children have such a natural appreciation for animals? Could it be that we see something of ourselves at the sight of a mother cheetah and her cubs? Does that family of elephants, protecting their small youngsters as they march to a watering hole remind us of our own caring instincts?

Whatever it is about animal families that stirs within us something deep and comforting, these feelings are only enhanced when we share the wonders found on a Kenya safari with our own families.

No matter if family means very young children, school-aged kids, teens, or three generations traveling to Africa,  family safari holidays  are a wonderful time of discovery and appreciation not just of the wildlife but of each other.

Just call , WhatsApp , email us or fill online enquiry form   and one of our friendly travel advisors will have you on the road to adventure – your own personalized African family safari.

family safari holidays kenya

And not far from Nairobi , a trip to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage will delight everyone – from toddlers to grandparents – with the wonderful sight of dozens of baby elephants, drinking from giant baby bottles, playing in the mud, and even kicking soccer balls!

Large circular outdoor seating area by a lake in a safari lodge

Your Family Will Thrive

Suddenly coming upon a herd of gazelle in a clearing, even the littlest members of your family will be astonished by nature’s gifts, starting a lifelong curiosity about wildlife and our place in the natural world.

With our experienced guides, school-age children can become “Junior Rangers”, going on nature walks and discovering animal tracks, small game, and the closeup sights and sounds of the savannah. Plus, many of our lodges offer kids’ clubs with storytelling sessions and babysitting services.

Kenya Family Safaris – Perfect For Families

For what reasons do wildlife safaris work so well with families? What gives our kids such a soft spot for furry friends? Is it possible that when we observe a mother cheetah with her cubs, we recognize a part of ourselves? Does the sight of that herd of elephants guarding their young as they make their way to a watering hole make us think of our own maternal tendencies?

Whatever it is about animal families that makes us feel safe and secure is amplified when we bring our own families along on safari to experience the beauties together.

A family safari is an incredible opportunity for everyone involved, from the youngest travelers to the oldest, to learn about and appreciate the African landscape and its inhabitants.

In order to tailor your Kenya Safaris experience to your family’s needs, your personal travel agent will inquire about your children’s ages, hobbies, and the types of animals and activities you hope to see during your trip. A safari tailored to your family’s interests and requirements is what we offer.

The Massai Mara Reserve is a great example; not only can large cats captivate children and even the most jaded teenagers, but the park also provides many options for exploration. If you want your kids to experience a culture that’s completely different from their own, take them on a hot air balloon safari over the park or take them to a Maasai community. They might even be invited to participate in a classic jumping dance!

Near Nairobi, at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage , visitors of all ages may marvel at the dozens of infant elephants as they play in the mud, drink from enormous bottles, and even kick soccer balls!

Even the youngest members of your family will be amazed by the natural wonders they encounter when they unexpectedly come across a gazelle herd in a clearing. This experience is sure to spark a lifetime fascination with wildlife and our role in the environment.

Children as young as elementary school can join our seasoned guides on nature walks as “Junior Rangers,” learning about the savannah’s unique wildlife, plants, and noises up close and personal. Additionally, a number of our lodges provide babysitting and children’s clubs that include storytelling sessions.

A safari has the unique ability to disconnect your kids from their gadgets, so they will have an experience that is truly out of this world. Being in close proximity to a lion is sure to inspire any adolescent to take a break from their phone and see the amazing world outside of TikTok.

We can also help your teen find conservation programs, local events, and volunteer opportunities to help out with wildlife.

How special is Kenya?

Kenya is one of the two countries in East Africa where unaltered Annual Migration of mammal grazers occurs. Annual Migration is an all-year event where mammal grazers with over a million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and gazelles move in pursue fresh water and pastures to graze on. In Kenya, the Great Migration occurs in the Masai Mara National Reserve, located in the southern part of the country at the southernmost boundary that doubles as an international boundary between Kenya and Tanzania .

The long journey of the Annual Wildebeest Migration with other mammal grazers is usually concluded in the Masai Mara National Reserve, and they congregate here in large numbers before they migrate back to the Serengeti in Tanzania. The great migration can be seen all year round however, the Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara reaches the climax between the months of June to November, and many visitors visit the Reserve during these periods of the year.

The Masai Mara wildebeest migration happens between July and October. Kenya family trips to see the great migration are best planned at least 6 months in advance. We recommend booking a family-friendly lodge or camp along the Mara river during the migration.

Both inside and outside the Masai Mara, there are hundreds of hotels, camps, and child-friendly lodges that are super good for adults and younger guests. These include Basecamp Masai Mara, Mara intrepid, Sarova Mara Game Camp, governors’ camp, Masai mara , Speke’s Masai mara, and Heritage Masai Mara.

Kenya with Kids - Kenya Family Holiday Travel Guide

Kenya is an exceptional family holiday destination but travelling with family, especially with small kids, calls for a little extra caution and preparation.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions posed by those considering coming for a family getaway in Kenya.

1. How Do I Plan a Family Safari in Kenya?

Planning a family safari in Kenya can be a lot of things; daunting, nerve-wracking, stressful or, if you follow these tricks and tips, fulfilling.

First, your family vacation in Kenya is as good as your safari operator.

Working with a reputable company goes a long way into ensuring all your family’s needs are met, and that’s where KenyaLuxurySafari.co.uk comes in.

We can assist you to plan the perfect family safari to Kenya doing all the work like hotel booking, airport and destination transfers, meals, activities, and babysitting services.

Secondly, how old are your kids? There will be a lot of run-ins with wild animals if you wish to stay at a hotel/camp/lodge inside the park.

Due to that,  some accommodations often set age limits for kids, usually 8-year and above,  to prevent accidents from occurring.

Camps and lodges outside the park often welcome all children from age zero. One great thing is kids of less than 3-year don’t pay during a family safari to Kenya .

2. Are Kenya Family Safaris Safe for Children?

We live by this motto ‘to never take clients to destinations we ourselves wouldn’t go to’. That said, all safari destinations in Kenya are largely safe and the people are welcoming.

But if you plan to visit destinations outside the safari areas, take the following precaution:

Get the recommended vaccines. These are Hepatitis A, malaria, meningitis, rabies, and yellow fever vaccines.

Never leave your luggage unattended.

Avoid traveling very late at night.

Avoid dark or secluded streets.

Beware of pickpockets.

3. Is Kenya a Good Family Holiday Destination?

Over 2 million tourists, a large number of them families with kids, visited Kenya in 2019 before covid-19 struck.

If that doesn’t vouch for Kenya’s credibility as a worthy family holiday destination, we don’t know what will.

Kenya is insanely gorgeous and with it comes thousands of kid-friendly parks, museums, beaches, and recreation centres.

The country also has plenty of lodges and camps, a lot of which are well-equipped and adapted to meet your family’s needs.

It doesn’t stop there; the country’s infrastructure is well-developed, and the security is better than average.

It comes as no surprise that the country is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world.

4. Can Children Go on a Safari in Kenya?

Children of all ages can go on a safari in Kenya. A few lodges and camps inside the park might not allow kids of less than 8-year due to safety reasons.

But that is not a reason not to go for a safari in Kenya since most accommodations will accept all kids.

The best part is children of less than 3-year travels free of charge while those of up to 11.999-year pays half the adult price.

You can read more about the best time to go to Kenya and the best time to go to Masai Mara to plan your family safari accordingly.

Kenya family safari planning with the experts

From the central highlands of the Laikipia Plateau and Lewa Downs, to the wide open plains of the Masai Mara and the rolling green hills of Chyulu, a Kenya family holiday provides a huge variety of activities and adventures as well as unbelievable wildlife to suit everyone.

Kenya Safari Itinerary Planning

The most family friendly lodges for a kenya holiday, where to go with young children on your kenya family safari, kenya family safari activities, activities on a kenya family holiday, how do i combine the beach with a kenya family safari.

It is so easy! There are some great beach options in Kenya which is lucky enough to have a vast Indian Ocean Coastline. The Lamu Archipelago used to be a hotspot for tourists seeking rest and relaxation after an action packed Kenya safari. Although this area unfortunately went through a turbulent couple of years, it is now back on the map and the likes of the popular Zanzibar should watch out. Off the coast of Tanzania, but very accessible from Kenya is the island of Zanzibar . Catering perfectly for a family beach getaway, Zanzibar has so many activities and fun quirky boutique hotels to be enjoyed. Zanzibar provides something for all ages; from the small boutique lodges with big family villas, to big resorts with kids clubs and baby sitting services. Activities are similarly diverse - scuba diving, snorkelling and dolphin safaris are just a few of the kid-friendly things on offer.

Why a Kenya Family Safari?

Why go to kenya on a family holiday, how much does a kenya family safari cost.

It doesn't take long to realise that a Kenya safari (or any safari for that matter) isn't a cheap holiday option, especially if you are bringing the family. If you play it right though, you can create a great value and incredibly memorable family trip. Lodges can range from around $400 per adult per night for a superb safari in the heart of the action in the comfortable, but more basic accommodation. At the other end of the scale, some lodges reach nearly $2,000 per adult per night and are incredibly opulent and lavish - children do get lower rates! When looking at the trip as a whole, including logistical costs, a week-long holiday combining a couple of safari areas can range anywhere from USD $10,000 all the way up to $40,000 for a family of four. Introducing Odyssey Explorer Welcome to our new itinerary-building app! Odyssey Explorer allows you to browse a range of popular itinerary templates and tailor them to suit your budget and tastes. Once you are happy with your route template, Odyssey Explorer gives you the freedom to select and change your accommodation in each destination. It is an excellent tool for you to get an instant price for your dream trip before you work with a Tanzania expert to fine-tune it and make it into a reality.

When to go on a Kenya family holiday?

The best time to go to Kenya is typically the dry season months of July - October which also handily falls over the British summer holidays for families with kids in school and university. The wildlife and weather is perfect in these months too! The only months to avoid if you do not want to be rained on is April and May which makes up East Africa's long rainy season. East Africa's short rains occur in November, however this is normally just a quick afternoon shower so you aren't completely washed out. November is an especially clever month to travel as it lies at the end of the dry season, so the wildlife is still fantastic and you get some brilliant deals as it is classed as the shoulder or low season. A festive holiday in Kenya is also an exceptional idea. The parks are beautiful, the wildlife easy to spot and the weather is great for a beach extension. Similarly, January and February are great too and like November, the reduced rates make it all the sweeter.

Why the leading safari experts recommend Kenya for spectacular family holidays

Kenya is the ideal safari destination for families according to Laura Burdett-Munns, MD of luxury tour operator Journeysmiths , mother of two and a bit of an expert, having been on her first safari at the age of just one years old. Here she reveals her top tips for the perfect safari with kids in tow.

laura-burdett-munn-on-safari-in-kenya

Laura Burdett-Munns on safari in Kenya

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I had been waiting for my children to be old enough to join me. That moment finally arrived as we set off on their first safari to Kenya.

No previous holiday had anything like the impact on Isabelle (11) and Jack (8). From one parent to another, these are my top tips for arranging a family safari to Kenya.

Why Kenya is perfect for family safari holidays with kids

Kenya was the birthplace of safari holidays and is still considered one of the best safari destinations . It has all the ingredients for an amazing family holiday.

In the long summer holiday months over two million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra cross the plains of the Masai Mara: a wildlife phenomenon known as the great migration. There’s Amboseli, beneath snow- capped Kilimanjaro. Then rift valley lakes, and the ancient volcanic hills of Samburu offer even more magical settings.

As well as wildlife-filled national parks, the country’s huge network of private wildlife conservancies enable you to experience the diverse landscape and its wildlife in a multitude of ways. Track rhino by horseback , ride by camel through the country’s northern wilderness as you spot endemic species such as the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, or take to the skies by private helicopter and witness vast herds of elephant from above.

Your family can also learn traditional skills from a Maasai warrior; kayak; horse riding; fly camp out under the stars and so much more.

It’s this level of diversity that makes Kenya a superb destination for a family safari; every day you set off on new and exciting shared adventures.

How to safari in Kenya the Journeysmiths’ way

My parents founded Journeysmiths more than 30 years ago, so we bring three decades of experience in arranging unique, individually crafted, family safaris. As a family business ourselves, we know it’s the little things that can matter most when you’re travelling with children. So as well as making sure you have the ‘big moments’, we also pay attention to details like organising your kids’ preferred meal choices at camps or arranging game drives that start later in the morning, to avoid tired little ones.

Journeysmiths take you away from the crowds and onto exclusive reserves where your family can experience the best of Kenya in privacy. Think luxurious, perfectly positioned lodges, where your family will have the Kenyan wilderness at their disposal, with an expert, private guide on hand to work to your family’s schedule. We know that families need flexibility to ensure little ones are well rested when it counts.

How long should a safari holiday be with young children?

A safari in Africa can be an extremely diverse experience and this is key when travelling with young children.

I would recommend two or three safari locations, and two to four nights at each location, depending on the variety of experiences available. It’s also important to make sure each location has new experiences to keep everyone entertained.

  • Paying for a private safari vehicle will give you maximum flexibility.

My best experiences on safari in Kenya

As MD of Journeysmiths, I’ve had the privilege to safari in Kenya many times. No two trips have been the same and with each journey to Kenya I have gained a deeper understanding of this incredible country.

However, travelling in Kenya with my children and seeing it afresh through their eyes, probably counts as one of my favourite safari memories. Naturally, you’ll make your own memories but here are a few of the moments that really stood out for my family.

camel-safari-ol-malo-laikipia-kenya

Camel Safari, Ol Malo, Laikipia, Kenya

Walking safari with Maasai and their camels

What an adventure! And the polar opposite of a crowded, minibus safari.

Your family can wander through beautiful Kenyan landscapes chatting with friendly Maasai. The camels carry everything and you can ride them too. Choose to travel with the camels for a day or longer,  watching wildlife and enjoying the freedom.

Experiencing the Great Migration

Thousands of animals live on the Masai Mara plains, so there’s always a lot to see, although the region is perhaps best known for its excellent populations of lion, leopard and cheetah.

Visit from June to October, and you’re able to witness these feline predators feasting, as over two million wildebeest, zebra and Thomson gazelle come crashing across the rivers from the Serengeti. This is Africa’s Great Migration.

Becoming an expert wildlife photographer

Your private guide, is an expert in anticipating the wildlife’s behaviour, and will allow plenty of time to set up your camera to ensure you get the perfect shot. Whether you are sitting back observing a lethargic pack of lion or following a thrilling wild dog hunt, your guide will ensure your family are perfectly placed.

Journeysmiths are even able to arrange for Big Cat Diary cameraman, Warren Samuels, to guide you around his secret wildlife hotspots for a few days.

Sleeping outside beneath the stars

Imagine spending the night together, out in the wilds under a billion stars.

In the afternoon, you arrive at the private starbeds where cosy beds, a bathroom and everything else you need is on a vast wooden deck, overlooking the plains. Then, after enjoying dinner with your guide, you have the wonderful experience of drifting off to sleep in the beating heart of Africa, with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the vast, inky sky.

Witnessing conservation in action

Wildlife conservation is fascinating for children and adults alike, and Kenya is pioneering exciting conservation solutions where local communities partner with safari lodges to ensure a positive future for rhinoceros, elephant and other endangered species.

Journeysmiths have long standing relationships with Kenya’s conservation change makers and are able to place your family at the front line of conservation. You’ll be able to meet with conservation experts and researchers and, depending on your children’s age, you can get involved with collaring and important monitoring of species.

Journeysmiths even arranged an exclusive safari stay here for TV wildlife presenter, Steve Backshall , whose five year old son loved watching warthogs on the lawn, as well as hippos in the nearby river.

Kenya Safari Tour Reviews

My 6 day safari with Bon Voyage Safaris to Maasai Mara and Serengeti was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The professionalism, expertise, and passion displayed by the staff, coupled with the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, made it an experience beyond compare. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safaris to anyone seeking an unforgettable safari experience in East Africa.
It was definitely an experience of a lifetime and you would not regret it.
Absolutely fantastic! I was with a lovely group of people, the guide and driver were brilliant and the accommodation was out of this world. Only down side is lots of travelling but the experience made up for it. Loved the Fig Tree and masi mara.

"Peregrine Tour – Classic African Safari Feedback Overall experience: Excellent The principal objectives of this tour were all achieved. We were able to view and photograph nearly all the animals we hoped to see. We had good leaders and drivers and excellent company. Accommodation was satisfactory to excellent and transport was effective if subject to a few deficiencies. There were some hiccups but there was clearly a desire on the part of Peregrine to rectify these as possible. Health and safety One concern as that the transport truck on the last two legs had problems with broken bindings for one of the fuel tanks. The door to the passenger compartment also was jammed and could not be opened from the inside – a worry when we found ourselves sitting directly above the unsafe fuel tank. The door problem was eventually rectified but the fuel tank bindings broke a second time. Itinerary This was comprehensive and a reason we felt this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience most of the attractions of east and south Africa. The trip was certainly undertaken in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Culture We had good interactions with Maasai people, San bushmen and the Cape Malay community as well as with accommodation staff and other guests at the relevant venues. Local drivers/guides for the game drives were also communicative. Accommodation Most venues were excellent. There were some changes from the advised itinerary (which others in the party were given advanced warning of but we were not). Some of these were probably a change to better facilities (e.g. Lake Nakuru Lodge rather than Sleeping Warrior tented camp & Trailblazers Camp rather than Dqae Quare Lodge in Ghanzi). However, inability to stay a second night at Mopane Lodge, Damaraland and the need to move to Khorixas Rest Camp was a definite downgrade. Also the inability to stay at Namibia Desert Lodge and diversion to Swartfontein Hunting Lodge was a major problem given the additional time (2h15m each way) to reach Sossuvlei and Sesriem, despite the excellence of the Lodge itself. Half our group opted not to go on that day trip because of the additional time and the state of the vehicle. Transport – poor Activities – Excellent Meals – excellent The transport was something of a let-down. We appreciate that availability of good appropriate transport in Africa may be limited and what there is may suffer greatly regularly because of the state of the roads. Our benchmark was the truck used when we toured with Peregrine in Mexico last year which had been much more upmarket. However we had problems with each of the trucks used in Africa: 1) Kenya. Reasonable truck. There was no air-conditioning but it was not required in those temperatures. No microphone system for leader. Did have fridge and lockable safe. 2) Maasai Mara. Appropriate vehicles for game drives. Because of rains, tracks had become muddy and local drivers did not appear to have either expertise or equipment to cope and frequently got bogged. This caused a delay of over an hour for us to be picked up after a balloon ride. 3) Tanzania. Truck seemed similar to that used in Kenya but had problems with engine pressure and stalling so (thankfully) we had more time in game drive vehicles than planned. The truck also proved to be very leaky in both passenger and luggage compartments. 4) Victoria Falls-Cape Town. Truck was smaller than the previous two with uncomfortably narrower seats. There was a roof that could be raised but this was unsuitable unless people were very tall. The bindings securing it were continually failing so it rattled throughout. The actual roof was quite low and a real hazard for taller members of the group. It was not a suitable vehicle for an extended game drive (for which it was scheduled in Etosha) as those on inner seats would have had very limited views. The entire group opted to pay an additional US$90 each to use game drive vehicles provided by the lodge. There was an air-conditioning unit of variable effectiveness and initially it leaked badly and had to be switched off. There was no safe or fridge available. More seriously, half way across the Namibian desert, bindings for the second fuel tank broke. Some of the passengers helped to secure it temporarily with a chain and it was “repaired” in Swapokmund but promptly broke again the next day. Safety issues with the jammed door are mentioned above in “Health and Safety”. The transport company replaced the vehicle with a “Sprinter” bus which gave a much more comfortable ride over rough roads but had more limited viewing facility. 5) Namibian border. Because of the change of vehicle, the exit bureaucracy at the Namibian border caused major problems. The transport company were reputedly “too busy” to forward replacement papers for a few hours and we had to wait for 3-4 hours before we could leave the country. Crew Our leader on the first leg was excellent with good local knowledge and excellent communication skills. He demonstrated extraordinarily good prediction skills about the likely movement of animals. He was responsive to the needs and request of the group. The driver on our first leg was competent and safe. Our leader on the second and third legs was also first rate, enthusiastic, approachable, organised and communicative. Both leaders showed a commitment to a high level of responsible tourism. The driver on our second and third legs was also safe and helpful although did get caught a couple of times exceeding the local speed limit (we felt sorry for him as the signs had not been all that clear and helped with his instant fines). The roads were challenging to say the least and he coped well with the difficulties and the broken fuel tank straps. He was rather shy socially but did join the group and we enjoyed looking at his family photos. Booking process There were many emails back and forth but the local contact was always patient and helpful. Trip notes Some of these were out-of-date when we travelled but we had not been notified of alterations, especially regarding changes of accommodation (some others had received updating emails). Had the change to Swartfontein Lodge been notified well in advance with a caution about the transport distance but a well-deserved complimentary description of the lodge, this would have caused less disgruntlement among the party. General comment Peregrine may not be the cheapest tour company but do have a commitment to quality. When inevitable problems arise they do make a strong effort to ameliorate or correct them.

"The Gorilla Experience was amazing, but the overall trip was quite poorly planned. It resulted in us travelling on the bus for8-10 hours a day, often arriving at the camp site only an hour before it was dark. If I had known that this was going to be the case, I would have just flown to Uganda and gone straight to the Gorilla Park! Also our guide was not very good- very little information was given so I felt quite disconnected from the countries.

Kenya Family Safari

8 days | discover the wonderful animals and people of kenya on this family safari holiday..

Masai tribe jump in red robes

Swap the hubbub of Kenya's capital for the calls of flamingos, zebras and rhinos as you journey from Nairobi to Masai Mara. The impressive Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha make an unforgettable backdrop as you camp out under the stars. Trek across the plains in search of Africa's largest residents, including lions, cheetahs and elephants. Spend time with the Masaai people and experience their fascinating tribal culture. Witness conservation projects that help protect animals from harm and extinction.

Trip overview

  • Venture into the incredible Masai Mara National Reserve for a full-day game drive
  • Make friends with warriors of the Maasai tribe around the camp fire; they'll be on guard for lions while you and your family camp overnight
  • Get a taste of Nairobi, an exciting, cosmopolitan city of sterling restaurants, cafes and museums
  • Keep your eyes peeled for black and white rhinos on an adventure through Lake Nakuru National Park
  • Encounter colourful birds and herds of zebra on a walk around Crater Lake
  • You and your family will be in excellent hands for the duration of your trip, travelling with a crew of three experienced locals – a leader, driver and cook
  • Please take into consideration if you are travelling with younger children that the going can be slow over the long distances and often bumpy roads. A little bit of patience will go a long way towards your enjoyment of this beautiful land! Some days have driving times of 6-7 hours. Furthermore there will be early mornings, when Africa is at its best.
  • This is a participatory camping trip and everyone will embrace the team spirit by helping with camp setup, food preparation and cleaning. You and your family will be putting up and taking down your tent as you move from place to place.
  • In Loita Hills (Day 5) you will stay in a bush camp with no shower facilities. The rewards of experiencing the Maasai culture, however, should more than make up for the lack of creature comforts.
  • Our purpose-built overland vehicles allow for excellent game viewing, equipped with large sliding windows. They have no air-conditioning, however, so they can get dusty and hot at times.

Jambo! Welcome to Kenya. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 5pm. You can arrive at any time as there are no activities planned until this important meeting. Please ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for this, consider arriving a day early so you are able to attend. If you are going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have these to give to your leader.

If you arrive early, perhaps head out and explore the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum or the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya where traditional homesteads of several Kenyan tribes are displayed at an outdoor village.

Notes: Petty theft is common in Nairobi. As a general rule, the safest place for your valuables is on your person in a neck wallet or money belt. Your hotel room or reception may also have a safe in which to store things. If you do decide to go exploring, make sure you get local advice on where it is and isn't safe to walk – particularly for later in the day. Be careful not to leave bags unattended on chairs or the floor when you're in a bar or restaurant. Without being paranoid, appearing vigilant is a great deterrence to would-be thieves. Also, make scans of important travel documents and email them to yourself – this will save you hours of time in paperwork if anything does happen.

  • Heron Court Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

Today will be a long day of adventuring. After breakfast, you will visit Langata Giraffe Sanctuary. This conservation project allows you to see the animals up close while learning more about them and their plight in the modern world.

After lunch, head out of Nairobi towards Lake Nakuru (approximately 4-5 hours), arriving in time to pitch a tent at the campsite before the sun goes down.

The alkaline waters of Lake Nakuru once supported an extremely large colony of flamingos – estimated to be up to two million strong! Over the course of the year the lake changes size considerably, shrinking to its smallest in March at the end of the dry season, and changing the type of birdlife and wildlife that inhabit the area. Unfortunately changes in water levels and chemical concentration caused the permanent population of flamingos to move elsewhere in the 1970s, however the lush area around the lake remains known for its bird life.

  • Nakuru Camp site (1 night)
  • Nairobi - Langata Giraffe Sanctuary

Head out on an early morning game drive around Lake Nakuru. Keep a lookout for the white rhinos that can often be found around the shores.

Afterwards, encounter friendly locals on a village visit before moving on to Lake Naivasha (approx: 2-3 hour drive). Lake Naivasha is a birdwatcher's paradise with floating islands of papyrus reeds. Afternoon wind and storms can cause the lake to become suddenly rough and produce high waves. For this reason, the local Maasai christened the lake Nai'posha meaning 'rough water’, which the British later misspelt as Naivasha.

There is an option to hire a bike and pedal around the lake this afternoon if you wish to stretch your legs after the drive.

  • Fish Eagle Inn (1 night)
  • Lake Nakuru - Village walk
  • Lake Nakuru - Overland Vehicle Game Drive
  • Lake Naivasha - Bike hire - USD12

After a camp breakfast, head towards Crater Lake and take part in a guided walk along one of the many trails. The waters of the lake draw a great range of game. Giraffes wander among the acacia, buffaloes wallow in the swamps and Colobus monkeys call from the treetops, while the lake’s large hippo population while away the day in the shallows. The walk takes 3 hours and we recommend you bring with you good sturdy foot wear. It is an easy walk. We will also hit the water for a boat ride across this vast lake.

The afternoon is free to relax around the camp and take advantage of the swimming pool.

  • Lake Naivasha - Game Walk in Crater Lake Game Sanctuary (entrance fee)
  • Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate NP (Game Drive) - USD65
  • Lake Naivasha - Boat trip - KES4000

The Crater Lake game walk and Hell's Gate National Park will also incur a USD50 transport fee per vehicle. The boat trip is for one hour and no additional fees are required.

Depart Lake Naivasha, making a short stop in Narok to do a spot of food shopping. Continue to Loita Hills (approximately 5-6 hours), stopping for lunch en route. Today's drive crosses the Great Rift Valley, Africa's immense and spectacular great divide, and takes you into the remote region of Loita Hills. This is the home of the traditional Maasai people. Visit the Maasai, who are known for their vibrant red dress and elaborate jewellery, and gain an insight into the culture and ancient ways of this proud East African community. After setting up your tent, meet your Maasai hosts. A local elder will deliver a fascinating talk about the Maasai and their history and culture. You'll be shown around a traditional Maasai home and see where the resident cattle are kept. Showers, upgrades and WiFi are not available at tonight's bush camp.

  • Loita Hills Campsite (1 night)
  • Loita Hills - Cultural talk and village visit
  • Loita Hills - Maasai Village Visit

Travel from Loita to Masai Mara (approximately 1-2 hours). The road is dusty when dry, and could be slippery and soft when wet, so the going may be slow. The Masai Mara is the quintessential African experience, with sparse open plains, dramatic skies and some of the world's most tremendous animals. After setting up camp, sit down to some lunch, then travel in our 4x4 for a 3 hour game drive through the wilderness of the Mara.

Your campground tonight is located outside of the national reserve and has flush toilets and showers. There is an option to upgrade, depending on availability. WiFi is not available here.

  • Mara Springs Camp (1 night)
  • Masai Mara - 4x4 Game Drive

Rise early and venture into the Masai Mara National Reserve for a full day of game driving (6hours). Explore this diverse environment and see a multitude of wildlife. Return to camp for lunch by the side of the Mara River – a great chance to spot crocs and hippos. Relax during the heat of the day before setting off again in the afternoon, expecting to return to camp around sunset.  We'll stop en-route for a picnic lunch.

Cross the plains of the Mara and climb the Rift Valley’s eastern wall past Mount Suswa on the return drive to Nairobi (approximately 6 hours). En route there may be opportunities to stop and make some final purchases. Once back in Nairobi perhaps enjoy a final dinner with the group in a local restaurant and reflect on this incredible African adventure.

If you're flying out today, please book a flight after 6:00pm.

7 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 6 dinners

Overland truck, 4 x 4 safari vehicle

Hotel (1 night), Cottage (2 nights), Camping with facilities (4 nights)

Kenya Family Holidays

From beach holidays to safaris, you can expect a wonderful experience for all the family

Create family memories that will last a lifetime

Watch the children's excitement as they see animals in the wild for the first time on a tailor made Kenya family safari

Kenya has two main attractions that are ideal for building a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday. Firstly, the many safari lodges across the various national reserves such as Samburu , Masai Mara and Tsavo offer spectacular wildlife viewing as well as the chance to immerse yourself in ancient cultures. Several lodges also offer bush schools and warrior academies for budding tribes boys and girls (and their parents!). Secondly, the Kenyan coastline features white sand beaches and warm, Indian Ocean waters that make for an idyllic family beach holiday.

The safari lodges and camps are generally more suited to older children and many come with an age restriction against under 12’s. This is because some of the camps have potential risks to very young children such as no fencing, proximity to rivers, steep steps or high walkways. Very early starts, late finishes and long days in a very bumpy vehicle can be a challenge for young children. Older children will not think twice, inevitably distracted by all the exciting wildlife and scenery that’s on offer.

The coastal resorts, particularly in Mombasa , do provide some very family-friendly destinations and are ideal if you're looking for a luxury Kenya family holiday. While the parents relax with a massage, the kids can be kept fully entertained by games and activities provided by the hotel and their qualified staff. You can split your time between relaxing by the pool and going out to sea for snorkelling and scuba diving sessions. Dining at both the safari lodges and beach resorts often involves buffet food which caters to a variety of taste buds, keeping everyone fed and happy!

Family safari holidays in Kenya have it all: wildlife-watching, outdoor adventure, tropical beaches, and action sports to suit everyone. A Kenyan family safari offers you the chance to fly in a hot-air balloon, enjoy a guided walk in the wilderness, meet a baby elephant, and kiss a giraffe. Children adore Kenya. Kids can learn bushcraft from a Maasai warrior, zip-line through a forest, and ride a camel along the shores of the Indian Ocean.

As the original and still the best safari destination, our hotels, lodges, and tented camps promise spacious family rooms, luxury swimming pools, extensive grounds, nature walks, baby-sitting, and children’s menus. Dedicated ‘edutainment’ teams offer a wide range of family-friendly pursuits from cookery to bead-making, and from guiding a baby turtle down to the sea to paddle boarding with dolphins.

Family Safaris in Kenya

  • Family Safaris

Kenya Family Safaris

Kenya is our favourite family safari destination. Yes, South Africa is cheaper and has malaria-free options, but Kenya has the iconic savanna grasslands of the Masai Mara and some of the best family friendly safari camps. Kenya is the place to watch lion and leopard on the hunt for prey and there are fantastic safari camps which offer a genuine family-friendly safari experience.

We are a ABTA & ATOL bonded tour operator specialising in family holidays and we know Kenya inside out. Our team have travelled extensively in Kenya and have tried and tested our itineraries with our own children, from babies to teenagers.

We know every family is unique, so get in touch and we'll work with you to organise a Kenya Safari that will blow everyone in your family's socks off!

Don't just take our word for it

Our Kenya Family Safaris are rated 5 out of 5

Ben’s recommendation of the Laikipia Wilderness Camp, followed by the Sosian Ranch and then the Msambweni Beach House was absolutely perfect for us. Everywhere we went the experience was personalised, the service was outstanding and the quality of facilities was second to none. Yes, we did safari drives to see the fantastic range of wildlife in the area, but we also swam in the rivers, rode camels, went on game walks and ate delicious meals cooked on an open camp fire before sleeping out under the endless African skies listening to the lions roaring! Then a flight down to the coast and we relaxed in the luxury of the a villa overlooking the Indian Ocean, with massages on the beach, personal staff on hand and nothing too much trouble.

Highlights of Kenya For Families

Safari & beach.

Safari & beach is a match made in heaven, and Kenya is one of the best places to do it.

You can combine safari in Kenya with the Kenya Coast, Zanzibar or Seychelles.

Mara Safari & Kenya Coast

Mara safari & zanzibar beach, longer safaris.

If you want a longer safari in Kenya (i.e. more than 3 or 4 days on safari), we strongly recommend a two location safari with contrasting habitats and activities.

Kids can get tired of game drives, so we love to combine the high wildlife densities and game drives in the Mara with the wonderful Laikipia area where kids of all ages can take part in bush walks, cultural encounters, fly camping, kayaking and climbing and really get a feel for the African bush.

Tips, advice & faq, when & where to go on safari, getting the right balance on your family safari holiday, 12 top tips for taking your children on safari, how to make safaris fun. by alex (age 8), the ultimate family walking safari.

I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience. Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc. El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had. Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean. So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last
We had a great time - even with the flight between Governors and the coast being two flights and a car! We also experienced a power cut At Nairobi airport on the way home so 2+ hours late taking off. Governors. Wonderful people and dealt with the flight delay very well - taking us back and letting us know that we could stay there if the flight was delayed overnight. The game drives were excellent and our guide (Erick) obviously very experienced and managed to find all the key animals - no rhino in that part of the Masai Mara but everything else in abundance - never seen so many herbivores (many many elephants as well as all the others) as well as two prides of lions. Could not have asked for more. The ‘tent’ was excellent and comfortable and well serviced. The only ‘complaint’ would be that the food - especially dinner - could be improved (I think we got a bit bored of soup as a starter for every meal bar one) and the main courses were not at the same level as Kinondo Kwetu and while all were explained there was no choice offered. The breakfasts were just what was needed after an early game drive. Kinondo Kwetu. What a great location and the welcome when we arrived at just gone 11.00pm was better than you could have ever thought possible - they we’re disappointed that we did not at that time want the full dinner experience! The rooms we’re comfortable. The food was excellent but again no choice was offered - other than for allergy reasons (which we do not have). May be some choice would be nice. Having said that the food we did have was excellent as were the wines (albeit a short list!) and other drinks. There were (as you know) lots of facilities/sports options - but we spent our time relaxing which was exactly what we needed and there were lots of places to do that. Overall. We would go back to both places - perhaps a few more nights at Kinondo Kwetu next time but 3 nights at Governors was perfect for us. Thank you for organising and recommending both places. That you and your colleague for trying to find out about the plane (flat tyre) but communication by the flight company left a lot to be desired (Governors were furious that they were not told and had taken us to the airstrip). Phil
Dear Lisa, We are now back home and had a fantastic time. All the arrangements went seamlessly, transport and hotels were great. Laikipia was amazing, a very personal experience and they did all they could to accommodate everything we wanted to do. The river location was fantastic and ideal for the children as they got to swim in it. It is somewhere we would all like to return to. There might not have been the numbers that you get on the Masai Mara however we got to see lions with cubs, two black leopards, a golden leopard and the wild dogs as well as a huge number of other animals and birds. Thank you for suggesting to stay for 4 nights, it was just the right amount of time. The tamarin Hotel was a good choice as we were able to eat at the Carnivore restaurant which was an experience. Mauritius was lovely and relaxing, just what we needed after a very active time in Laikipia. Accommodation and service was great. Weather was good for most of the time, a few showers over the last couple of days. Thank you once again for organising it all. Sally
Hi Lisa It was a fantastic experience, thanks very much. All the arrangements were seamless and our guiding/support team were excellent, if there is a way for you to formally commend the team to your ground operators then I would be grateful if you could do that, they really were brilliant. Many thanks for your help in arranging the trip, and for your patience during the multiple re-arrangements over the past couple of years. Kind regards, John
We had the most incredible time thank you. We loved Karen Blixen camp and felt part of a family there, it was incredibly special. And Breezes was very relaxing. We can't fault all the transfers and the moment we were greeted on the tarmac at Nairobi airport we knew we were going to be well cared for. Thank you so much to you and all the Tourdust team for making it such a happy and memorable trip.
We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture. Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph. Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture. Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake! One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip. Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!
I had just the most incredible time on the climb. The team were incredible and just so accommodating. I really only have good things to say as it was such a great experience. George was as good as a guide as it gets, very articulate and made sure I was comfortable the whole way up with frequent briefings.
We had an amazing time thank you. The itinerary was great as we felt like we saw lots of different things and it kept it interesting for our daughter. She especially loved the gorge at Hells Gate. Unfortunately the Menengai Crater walk was a bit hard for her although that probably had something to do with how hot it was! We especially loved the Sunbird Lodge - it is such a beautiful place and all the staff were so incredibly welcoming and friendly. Our guide, Joseph, was exceptional too and we can’t speak highly enough of him.
The trip was amazing everything was better than we could have imagined. There was a moment climbing the mount Kenya where my wife accused me of tricking her into doing this (half kidding) as some of the nights got pretty cold, but we were dressed well and the sunrise at the peak was astonishing. Safari was spectacular, Ben who was our main guide and driver was awesome! We saw everything excepts rhinos which were more of a hope than a reality. We also were able to watch a rock python eat a Thompson gazel live. It was one of the most interesting and unsettling things I have ever seen. Just overall, so many moments that make you think wow or I can't believe I am here. Thank you for your help in getting everything set up. I don't believe I could have booked the trip without your help and guidance. It was an amazing way to start our marriage and truly the trip of a lifetime!
We both suffered but enjoyed it immensely. Just how it should be!!!! Our route up the mountain, the Burguret trail is very arduous and certainly should not be used for people who are not very fit and experienced trekkers. It mainly followers animal trails through the forests and bog lands around the mountain. The Chogoria route down was great. The guide and porters were great. Wild camping means just that, really just what I wanted, but I have lived in Kenya.
Speke's camp was absolutely ideal - small and personal, with great hosts. We'd definitely recommend the "tented safari" experience to others. The kid's didn't miss having a pool (too interested in Safari). Speke's camp give you your own landrover and driver/guide, which gave us great flexibility (much better I suspect than what is offered by some of the larger camps). Our guide was brilliant. See below for the review we just posted on rip Advisor. I think the only negative of the trip was getting through Nairobi airport (multiple security checks, and they ask you to "board" two hours in advance, which in fact means going into crowded transit lounge with no facilities), but there's not anything anyone can do about that It's also worth saying that Peponi really is a unique experience. It's a proper East African institution, with all the locals dropping into the bar. It's the perfect antidote to anyone wanting to get away from the soulless all inclusive resorts which could be absolutely anywhere in the world (which seem to be a bit of a feature of Zanzibar). Lamu is still amazingly undeveloped. We stayed at Speke's camp for 4 nights in August 2018 - a family of two adults and two children. For us it was the perfect location to experience the Mara. The camp is only a short drive outside the main Mara reserve and is in an amazingly picturesque location, set by a small river in the shade of trees. Wildlife roams near (and sometimes through!) the camp. You get to feel very close to nature when you have a buffalo rooting up grass just outside your tent in the middle of the night! The camp itself is small and has a very personal feel to it. There are only eight or so guest tents, so you get to meet everyone passing through. One of the great pleasures was getting to chat to other guests over the evening meal or round the camp fire, swapping stories of the day's sightings. If you do want a little more privacy, then it's absolutely fine to eat in your own group. Whilst you do sleep and eat under canvas, it is an extremely civilised experience: the beds are comfy (with hot water bottles provided to ward off the chill of the evenings); there are bucket showers which sound much more primitive than they really are; the communal area is very elegantly laid out; tea is brought to the tent before setting out on early morning game drives, and the food was fantastic. What really makes the experience however are the wonderful hosts. Both Adrian and Veronique made a real effort to get to know us and ensure we were well looked after; and it's certainly worth picking Adrian's brains on the history of the region (it's not called Speke's camp for nothing) The final word must go to our wonderful guide/driver Ambrose and our Masai spotter Marco. It was a real privilege to have our own land-rover and to be shown the reserve by such knowledgeable and charming individuals. Ambrose is a proper naturalist, can identify a lilac breasted roller at 200 yards, and knows where to see the best wildlife without simply following other trucks. On our final afternoon, with 30 minutes before we had to leave the Mara Triangle, we had seen every animal and bird that was on our wish list (including a live Cheetah kill), but had not seen a rhino. Marco saw a speck on the horizon, Ambrose drove like the clappers and as a parting gift we were able to see this most elusive animal up close. Notwithstanding all the awe-inspiring nature, I think my wife's personal highlight was driving the land rover back to amp along the dirt track through herds of zebra and ambling giraffe. A truly amazing experience all round.
Everything was exceptionally well arranged and the whole trip, from checking in on line and printing out the outward journey boarding cards from home, until return to Heathrow, was completely seamless. Although arriving slightly earlier than scheduled, we didn't have to wait before being collected at Nairobi by Elijah, our guide and Samuel the driver. On being told that we had hardly slept at all on the outward journey, they took us to a small B&B place they use (sorry, I've forgotten the name of the place) and we were able to rest/sleep for some 3 hours before setting off on our adventure. This was very much appreciated by us as that first day was full on after that. They looked after us really well and both were very knowledgeable and good company and were flexible to our needs, with nothing being too much trouble for them. The accommodation you picked for us was spot on. We were particularly taken with Sunbird Lodge (I could have spent the whole week there if it were not for being on the move due to the nature of the trip), which was quite informal and extremely friendly. We then moved on to the Maji Moto Eco Camp, where again everything was fine. Having stayed in similar places before, at my age now, the one night suited well and I was surprised when Dan was so taken with the place that he would have liked to stay another night! I think the camp fire might have had something to do with it. The visit to the school was also well worth it from Dan's perspective. On then to Ilkeliani and I concur with what you say about it being so well priced for what it offers, that it is a good recommendation. This was slightly more formal at mealtimes than Sunbird Lodge but nevertheless, the staff were equally friendly. As adults, both my husband and myself enjoyed the food although the feedback I provided on their customer satisfaction questionnaire was that perhaps the evening meals could possibly have slight variations for children. We didn't see any signs of the suspended footbridge and as we didn't ask about it, I don't know whether it's still there or not. I have to say that the beds in both Sunbird and Ilkeliani were very, very, comfortable. The Mayfair Southern Sun was again a good choice although I think the room we had was perhaps a standard twin room. There were two what I call "three quarters" sized beds, i.e. larger than a single but not quite a double bed size, which meant it was a bit of a squeeze for 2 persons in one bed. Both the Giraffe Centre and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary were ideal additions to the itinerary. We had a 10 year old who was reluctant to leave Kenya!
The holiday was amazing! Everything we wanted it to be! The safari was so we'll organized and our guide was very good. All the accommodation was superb. At the Masaai village we stayed in a mud hut which was different to the tent described in the itinerary, but so much better. Pinewoods resort was lovely especially the staff who couldn't have looked after us any better. The food was exceptional.
Accommodation and food at Karen Rock House were good. It was very quiet there as we were the only guests. Our transport, guide (Elijah) and driver (Oliver) were excellent. Elijah was very informative and patiently answered our questions about everything we saw. Our first day was very full, a long drive to Hell’s Gate, bike ride and gorge walk. Elijah suggested that we postpone the boat trip on Lake Navaisha to the morning we left Nakuru rather doing it on the way and this worked well. On the bike ride, our youngest struggled with an adult sized bike with bald tyres. Fine for us and our eldest though. The gorge walk was great as was the boat trip on Lake Navaisha. Lake Nakuru Lodge accommodation, food and setting was excellent - as were the game drives with Oliver and Elijah. We saw a lot more here and close up than we did in Ol Kinyei and the Masai Mara. Maji Moto Camp was an interesting experience. Again, we were the only visitors and the facilities & food were good. We visited the school before travelling to the Mara Adventure Camp but could have spent longer as there was a lot to see and our children enjoyed playing football etc with the school children. The Adventure Camp was brilliant. We had a packed schedule of game drives (up at 5.30 every morning) and George and Wilson (guide and driver) were a lot of fun. They played football with us and were very entertaining on bush walks and game drives. We felt all the staff at the Adventure Camp worked really hard to make the experience an enjoyable one - from preparing the food, supplying endless hot water and tea and making sure we got to see what we wanted. The Ol Kinyei conservancy is beautiful (although we saw more at Lake Nakuru). Our itinerary was good - it was busy and varied which suited us very well. We felt a bit rushed on Day 1 - in hindsight, it really was too much for one day. The day we travelled to the Masai Adventure Camp was also time pressured and we had a to cut short our visit to the school. Overall, 5/5 - an unforgettable experience.
If you’re looking for a more personal experience of Kenya, something a little different from the standard safari and beach package holidays, then you should definitely speak to Tourdust! We decided to have a family holiday with our two teenage boys in Kenya in 2014, a decision that turned out to be far from straight-forward as the FCO extended their no-essential travel guidance area by area in the months leading up to our holiday. After researching the travel companies specialising in Kenya , we chose Tourdust to organise our holiday, partly based on their highly informative website but mainly based on a conversation with Ben, who within a matter of minutes clearly understood what we were looking for. We knew that we didn’t want a standard package safari and beach holiday but what we got was beyond all our expectations – a truly personal, family experience of Kenya that we will remember forever!
We have just arrived back after our 10 days in Kenya and Zanzibar. Pongwe Beach is an absolute little gem. Far exceeded our expectations after the standard of accommodation we experienced in Kenya and from the pictures on the hotel's website. However, perhaps I should talk about Kenya first. We felt absolutely secure, safe and relaxed. There was no hint of anything untoward. There were security guards at Nairobi Airport and searches when going into shopping malls etc., but that was very low key. We were the only guests at Rock House and at Plantation Lodge. At Lake Naivasha Resort there was one other European guest, a German tourist. At the Mara Springs Camp it was busy because of the Migration, but there were no other English guests. Plenty of Australians, Americans and other Europeans, French, Belgian, German etc. All the hoteliers commented on the affect the British media reports have had on UK tourists visiting any part of Kenya. It is a great shame. Other nationalities seem not to have taken fright! I was afraid we would not see much wildlife in the Mara with so many vehicles swarming the park. However, we were amazed, not just by the number of Wildebeest, Zebra , Thomson's Gazelle etc, but by the variety of other animals we came across. Our team were wonderful. Samuel, our driver had a great sense of humour, knowledge of wildlife and the country, as well as being a very safe and careful driver. Elijah, our guide, had an incredible knowledge of all the flora and fauna and our cook, also Samuel, managed to conjure up very wholesome and plentiful meals with the limited facilities and provisions available to him at the Wilderness camp and at Mara Springs Camp. After early morning starts, it was great to get to Pongwe Beach and completely relax for a few days. If you are going to promote the property in place of Lamu, we would have no hesitation in recommending it. It is English owned and well managed. The rooms are spotless, the gardens and pool well maintained and the beach swept every day. Despite being full there were plenty of loungers and hammocks hidden away, so it always felt intimate, never busy. The cuisine is excellent too and great attention is given to presentation and variety. Thank you, Ben, for all your help and patience when we were jittery about whether to continue with Kenya. I am very glad we did as we had a great time and have many happy memories. I do hope the media coverage is not causing you too much loss of business and that the message can be spread that the Nakuru Park, Lake Naivasha and the Mara are quite safe areas.
My son & I had a superb time, there isn't one word to describe the trip but many adjectives come to mind; stunning, humbling, breath taking, beautiful, hilarious (that was due to my sons face when we watched lions mating!), fascinating....Each day was exhilarating and amazingly each day got better. Our main guide Duncan was very knowledgeable and easy going, David our cook was excellent and also a good source of information. All the guides we encountered we were pleased with. There were so many highlights it's difficult to pick one but our time at the Maji Moto camp with Masai is probably my main highlight, walking in the bush with a knowledgeable tribe member, the widows camp and the school very humbling and setting extraordinary. The whole trip was well organised, flexible not fixed, I'd give it a 6/5! Travelling alone with my son can sometimes feel daunting but I never had any concerns during our trip and the balance of activities and travelling was perfect for a family holiday.
Again, thank you for your help planning our wonderful holiday in Kenya. Both the Masai Mara and Lamu were a good fit for our family. Thank you for all the time you spent on the phone discussing possibilities and exploring options with me. This was a favourite family holiday. Having planned the logistics of other trips, it was wonderful to have you do this much more competently than I could have done myself. Our transfers went smoothly. We were met in Nairobi both times by Denis from Gamewatchers. He and the drivers were personable and competent, sharing information about Nairobi and discussing our trip with interest. When our daughter got sick upon return to the airport, Denis took good care of us, interceding with security to help us get her inside as quickly as possible. We most enjoyed our time at Masai Mara and The Intrepids. We were well looked after by the staff, our steward and waiter were personable and attentive, and the accommodations were a wonderful place to relax. The game drives were fun for all of us, and we especially enjoyed our guide, Katembo. Seeing such a concentration and variety of animals within the park was such thrill for everyone. Our teen daughter enjoyed the drives and appreciated wifi access, so she could post pictures from each day's sightings. Our 11 yr. old loved spending time with Judy in the Adventurers Club, and opted out of a couple of drives to stay back and do activities with her. Judy was excellent with her. On the last night, at our waiter's request, the chef cooked a traditional Swahili meal for us, which was the favourite meal of our stay. Intrepids was a good choice to accommodate all members of the family. We were very pleased with the choice of Lamu for our beach stay. We stayed at Kiwandani House in Shela. We truly enjoyed the beauty of the traditional Swahili style house and the relaxed and quiet atmosphere of the town. We were well cared for by a very adept staff. Asya the manager was accommodating and helpful. Chef culinary skills were excellent on both taste and presentation. He provided us a personal 4 star restaurant and over fed us with the most delicious food. He did very well at accommodating our preferences. Sylvester, our steward, was gracious and tireless and humble. We were very impressed at the attention to detail he gave, from setting the table to preparing our rooms. He was helpful, kind, and accommodating in all things. We spent much of our time relaxing by the pool or enjoying the ocean breezes from the upper floor, but found plenty to do to occupy our three days there. The highlight was participating in the release of a nest of baby sea turtles on Manda Island. Again, Lamu was an excellent choice. Our family enjoys nature so this was a highlight holiday. Never once did we worry about security or feel unsafe. We enjoyed the natural beauty of the country and the hospitality of the people. We loved Kenya and hope to return again. Thank you for following up with us once we were home to see hoe our trip went.
Our Guide, Nicolas was fantastic. We bombarded him with questions which he was always able to answer and as a result we came away feeling that we had much more understanding of Kenya, not just the wildlife, but the people, politics and economy etc. The driver, Duncan was great too and seemed to know the Mara really well which meant we were often the only vehicles in an area and that we saw loads. Demetrius, the cook too were really helpful and made being vegetarian completely comfortable - the kids loved his food. And the kids say I have to feedback that the truck was awesome (it really was!). Magi Moto was an interesting experience and one that we have thought about a great deal since returning home. It was not so rich in terms of wildlife - it's a fairly desolate place isn't it - but we were impressed by the projects there and the kids loved the warrior training. At times I felt uncomfortable that people's lives were being so openly presented to us, but I am not sure there is a way around this and also understand that our presence brought them a source of income. We met people there with an incredibly intimate knowledge of their environment that was quite inspiring. We did not do the complete walk to the Papesua Masai cultural village as it felt too long for Luca (7) and as it turned out there was no one there anyway. This was a good thing because it meant we had a quite period when we got to Mara Springs before going out for an afternoon drive. The children really appreciated the down-time and when a monkey stole Jasper's melon from the porch of our tent their day was made!
Terri and I just got back from Mt. Kenya, the tour you arranged for us was fantastic.
Daisy and I really enjoyed the trek, it was the highlight of our holiday. I'm full of admiration for the our Guide Francis, cook Wilson and his team of porters. Not only did they feed us like kings but Francis never put a foot wrong on the whole mountain and, as you know, they don't have all the high tech equipment we have such as good boots and 4 season sleeping bags. That really brought home the income gap and I was glad we had brought a decent tip with us. We both enjoyed chatting to Francis as we walked and at meal times and he gave us a very interesting perspective on Kenya life. At the Rock House Patrick and his wife were very helpful especially sorting out our forward coach trip. It would be great if you could feed back our thanks to the guys. Transport to and from the mountain was fine, better than I was expecting. The huts were a bit of a shock to the system but you quickly get used to them and its definitely better than tents! The acclimatization day was interesting, I think it may well have helped us summit fairly easily but we were the only group who did it. Overall I would recommend it if you have time. I will recommend Tourdust to others and I'd give you 5/5.
A big thank you to the team at Tourdust for our fantastic trek to Mount Kenya. We made it. It was a tough climb and not for those who are afraid of heights. I learnt loads about the flora and fauna of Africa from our expert guide Francis and we enjoyed great food prepared by Ngari. Full write-up and pictures of my trip are here
We had an excellent trip, thanks! The guide was very knowledgeable and flexible with breaks, timings, etc. He kept phone contact with the main office to ensure all connections/vehicles were in the proper place at the right time. The lodging was acceptable for a trek. Nothing great, mostly hard huts or tented camps, but nice to have a warm shower on days between our tenting nights. The one night we were supposed to be in The Pelican Lodge, we were changed to Lake Nakuru Lodge, which was fantastic! During the trek, the cook made wonderful breakfasts and dinners. There was a decent variety of soups, vegtable and meat dishes. Lunch was a basic 'box lunch' with a sandwich, chicken, boiled egg and fruit. Lunch was acceptable and fueled us for the journey, it just got a little redundant by the end of the trek. All pre-trip literature was informative and sufficient. I have already and will continue to recommend this trip to others. For the trek: the days are long and tiring, but it was very worth the effort, and the sense of accomplishment is immeasurable. The safari itself was also great. The amount of time spent driving between the trek end to Nakuru and Nakuru to Masai Mari got old... however, this is unavoidable when trying to do it all. Thanks again for aranging a very enjoyable trip!
My guide, Duncan Kingori, was fantastic. In the three days we were with him I don't think I ever asked him a question, on any topic, which he couldn't answer in detail. He was a fountain of information about the mating habits, gestation periods, family practices, hunting strategies etc. of every animal we encountered, but never in an intrusive way. He also appears to be an excellent driver and mechanic, and in a dozen hours or so we seem to have seen pretty much everything Maasai Mara can offer - not least all of the Big Five. I was also very impressed by the two Mountain Rock camps, and think the new temporary camp inside the park is particularly fine. It was exactly what I wanted: comfortable, but not featherbedded or faux-colonial. I can't say I am a big fan of the Rock House in Karen - the staff were friendly enough and the food was OK, but all the tortured wood and fake (fibreglass) rock gives the place a heavy, gloomy air! Meals, service & advice and overall impression was great. It would have been good to know that the last two hours of the drive to Maasai Mara are over an extremely uncomfortable unpaved (and washboarded) road; people might want to consider flying from the local airstrip to their next destination if the costs of doing so aren't prohibitive.
Altogether a great trip. We were extremely well looked after by Tourdust, and Francis and his team from the moment we were picked up at our hotel in Nairobi to the moment we were dropped off at Lewa safari Park. Francis was an excellent ‘Leader’, bright and knowledgeable, and with very good judgement. We would very happily recommend both Francis and his team, and Tourdust. The final ascent to the non-technical peak of Mt Kenya, Lenana, was perfectly judged despite the foot of snow that had fallen overnight. A great trip.
Having Tourdust as our partner and being able to communicate with the British office gave us confidence (no offense to our African brothers and sisters, it is just an European thing - we think we can better understand each other having the same mindset and mentality, so easier to communicate). The communication as expected, went very well and smooth - both by e-mail and phone. We were told what can we expect for the price we agreed on, and there were only positive suprises during the trip: the 4WD Land Rover that came to pick us up was at the meeting point at the right time (which should not be a surprise, but we were far from Nairobi on Rusinga Island and the meeting was at 6 AM) and the driver even made the extra 2 km-s to pick us up from our mountain cabin. The car was very comfortable for 6 people (I would not recommend though to use it for 7 people plus bags - could be a little tight, but for 6 was great). We had an excellent driver - kind and knowledgable, ready to 'satisfy' the 'strange' requests of the tourist: 'check that bush on the right', 'lets look what is under that tree', etc. This was my first safari (out of 3 so far) where we saw the 'BIG 5': and much of the credit goes to our driver, who kept beleiving that we will find the animals, and kept looking for them. On the last day of our safari - which was a morning drive we still missed the rhino, having not seen any in the previous two days. We only had about one hour before we had to leave the park. the group was ready to give up, but our driver and guide - Samuel - kept saying, do not give up, we will find one. He was driving on roads where we were the only group/car, and suddenly we saw in the middle of the grass a beautiful black rhino, just waiting us to shoot - some pictures of course... We were the first ones, we found it! those who have been to safari know what I mean when I say, we found it! It feels special when you find an animal and not going there because you got through the radio the location of the animal found by somebody else. We of course announced it, and in 10 minutes there were like 12 cars and vans to see 'our' rhino. You can ask anybody: this was on February 22, 8.30 in the morning in Masai Mara, when Samuel with a group of 6 from Romania found THE RHINO…
We had a great time! We really appreciated that the trip was booked with a local tour operator, which we learned was one of the biggest and best in Kenya. Patrick was exceptionally helpful, and came to meet us 3 times to check in and make sure things were going well. There was an unfortunate change to our flight to Lamu which happened 2 weeks before leaving, but were only told the morning of, and it meant waking early, somewhat unnecessarily, except that our flight was changed to the intl. airport instead, and it also meant stopping in another city on the way, which added time to our flight, and detracted from our time in Lamu. Nevertheless, we had an amazing time, and are very pleased with the trip! I would rate both customer service and our experience a 5. I would definitely recommend you to others, and am looking forward to saving up again so I can book my next trip.

An African family safari and beach holiday might be one of the most rewarding you ever spend together. Watching the Africa day as it unfolds in front of you and through the eyes of your children can be simply magical and an experience you’ll remember forever.

Additional Information

Have a look at sample itineraries for family safari ideas or read what makes a good safari holiday

But remember, budget, age of children, family size, timing all have an impact on our recommendation. (NOTE: for a lot of families, timing will be dictated by school holidays. This will also affect price – with international flights being quite hefty unless they are booked in advance. A top tip is October half term where many lodges and flights are out of peak prices.)

Many parents have concerns about safety of their children. Is it safe? Yes. Camps are set up to ensure all guests are safe. Some have specially appointed staff to keep an eye on your children. Some also have guides that are specifically chosen for their ability to stimulate children and get them really excited about the safari experience.

Health can also be a concerning factor with worries about malaria and other tropical diseases. Your local doctor will advise you regarding innoculations and malaria prophylaxis. All camps have mosquito protection and are regularly sprayed.

Families are welcome at many of the lodges but there is often a limit to the age group. Safari in Africa is not ideal for babies/small children. For the investment required and, for you all to take something out of it, we would suggest safaris are better suited to older children – probably 7/8+.

Sharing a lodge with family friends often means camp take-overs in the smaller camps, allowing you to dictate your own timing preferences and often saving you money. But there are many options available to you and countries have developed their own way of delivering the best family experience.

A Tanzania safari is often perfectly set up for family groups, particularly in the north (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire). Here, by having your own vehicle with driver, you are already self contained and able to move from camp to camp. Although this is probably better for those families with slightly older children (12+) who will enjoy the variety of game longer excursions can bring. An alternative option is to chose a more lodge based safari where you can create more of your own agenda and timetable. Here it could be better to head to the Selous.

Tanzania family safaris combine well with a beach holiday in Zanzibar. Throughout Zanzibar there are numerous family friendly beach options from resort type hotels to cheaper guesthouses, all offering varying degrees of watersport activities.

Kenya also offers some fabulous options for a family safari experience – with a gentle introduction around Nairobi and then a full variety of options as you head out to the parks – depending on how deep (or how wild) you wish your family safari experience to be. There are some great family friendly lodges in the Mara plus some more lifestyle lodges in the northern parks including Lewa and Meru. With easy access to the beach, this makes Kenya an idea destination for a family safari and beach holiday.

Zambia is home of the safari house where families all sleep under the comfort of one roof. Ideal for 2 or 3 families travelling together. Many owner-run smaller camps who either have their own or had children at the camp are remarkably child friendly. Having the camp to yourselves allows you to develop an agenda suited to your own preferences. A Zambia safari can combine with some extreme sports your older children (or you) may enjoy – whether it be bungy-jumping over the Victoria Falls or white-water rafting down the Zambezi rapids- these are amongst the best of the best.

Botswana game rich classroom but often expensive since families are required to take-over entire camps with high entry costs. But, if you can afford it, Botswana can quickly and without too much strain, make animal story books, films and zoos all come to life. We would recommend heading to the Okavango Delta and trying Chitabe or Seba camps.

Namibia’s surreal landscape offers fun and adventure and, like the hybrid animals that have evolved within it, so have some of the sports: like sand-boarding, dune buggying, desert ballooning, kayaking and cycle safaris (all probably suited to slighty older families). Younger families may prefer a self-drive safari although it does mean some hefty mileage. But Central Highlands, Etosha National Park and Twyfelfontein regions are all possible.

For families with younger children, South Africa is often an easier option – malaria free and very child friendly. A family safari in South Africa can combine well with a trip to the cape for some beach fun. Kruger National Park has some great private concessions or cheaper government owned options both of which will give you an exciting family safari.

Our recommendation is do it – you’ll spend some real quality time together. It’ll be the best holiday you’ve ever had.

We’ve had an unforgettable holiday experience. James put together a really well thought out itinerary, customised to our particular family and based on in-depth knowledge and understanding of the country, the people and the accommodation. The travel tips were detailed and invaluable.

Serengeti was extraordinary, in particular the south but also the central part, and we’re glad to have visited Ngorongoro as well. Good service and excellent food. All flights and pickups worked perfectly. Thank you so much for preparing our trip.

family safari holidays kenya

Our plan so far:

1st part: Kenya

2 nights in Nairobi

2 nights at Hell's Gate (for cycling and walking, possibly Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot)

2 nights at Lake Nakuru, including a hike to Menengai Crater

2-3 nights Safari

3 nights at Lamu Old Town (travel by plane )

2nd part: Tanzania

3 nights at Moshi (Materuni Falls, coffee tour, day trek to Kilimanjaro)

2 nights at Ngorongoro

4 nights at Zanzibar

For safari destinations, we are considering:

Masai Mara (river crossing)

Amboseli (Kilimanjaro views, Observation Hill)

Arusha (Mount Meru hike?, Masai Market visit)

Serengeti (river crossing)

Tarangire (heard it’s a less expensive park with good wildlife?)

Lake Manyara (hippo spotting and boat ride)

We've read that conservancies like Lewa or Ol Pejeta Conservancy are the best, but they seem out of budget for now.

Also, we want to experience Masai culture, possibly staying at a Masai boma, but most options seem like tourist traps. Can anyone recommend a better experience? Are there community-run initiatives that provide an authentic experience and benefit the local community?

We're interested in villages like Mto wa Mbu, Usambara Mountains hike, Bagamoyo, Mombasa, but these seem far out of the way and may be best kept for a future trip.

For the safari days, we have around $2800 USD per person for 8-10 nights (accommodation, guide, vehicle, park entry fees, food.)

We're okay with basic camps, for example: https://www.booking.com/hotel/ke/rhino-tourist-camp

Suggestions are welcome.

Inside Vogue Williams’ ‘magical’ trip to Kenya with kids and hubby Spencer Matthews as they visit safari

VOGUE Williams has been enjoying a "magical" holiday in Kenya with her three kids and husband Spencer Matthews.

The Howth native and her  Made In Chelsea  star husband have jetted off with their three kids, Theodore, Gigi and Otto, to East Africa .

Vogue is on the holiday with her husband and five kids

The family are spending as much time as possible together before Spencer embarks on his world record attempt of running 30 marathons in 30 days.

Vogue has been enjoying her sun-soaked getaway and has given fans a detailed and extensive look into her trip over on Instagram.

The Dubliner posted some short clips of their first few nights in Kenya and admitted in her caption: "It’s tough with the three of them and I feel exhausted by the end of the day but I would definitely recommend a trip like this with young kids."

She added: "It’s been brilliant learning about everything and their culture."

Vogue Williams begs for help as youngest child struggles with ‘night terrors’

They spent a day exploring the African plains on a safari with the family run, Cottars Safari, in the Maasai Mara area in Kenya.

The family were driven around in a Land Cruiser and were fascinated by the lions walking right by them.

She recorded her youngest child, Otto, as he showed off the animal noises he had learned from being in the safari.

He was dressed in an adorable aqua-blue swimsuit, fitted with arm bands as he prepared to go swimming.

At the pool, Vogue captured Gigi as she enjoyed a swim and showed off the stunning views surrounding them, as the sun beat down on the rocks.

The 38-year-old then gave fans a "tent tour", as she showed off the open-plan-tent that housed the family as they enjoyed their safari stay.

Vogue said: "The kids are so excited to stay here."

Their stunning accommodation was comprised of one main room, that slept the family of five across four beds. They had a separate bathroom area.

In a post to her stories yesterday, Vogue showed the reality of a whole day spent exploring with young kids.

She carried Otto in her arms and asked: "Do you want to walk?" - but the toddler made it clear he was happy to remain in his mums arms.

In a subsequent post, she showed off an essential safari outfit she got from Irish designer Moon & Mellow.

GREAT MEMORIES

The peach wildlife themed dress featured exotic trees and flamingos.

As she talked fans through her outfit she said: "It has pockets, which is very important." The dress retails on their website for €300.

Friends and fans reacted to the podcaster's stunning trip.

Travel blogger Rosie Buckley commented: "Just looks absolutely incredible Vogue, what a beautiful opportunity for you and the kids. Can’t wait to do this with mine."

Susan guhsed: "Love your little family such great memories."

East African Experience remarked: "So good to see you and the whole gang having a ball!!"

Grace admitted: "Id be way too paranoid I'd get eaten alive by the wild animals to enjoy it."

Recent days have seen Vogue sharing snippets of their trip to Kenya on Instagram , where they met giraffes on a safari, swam in a tropical pool and stayed in a lavish tent.

‘I can’t even describe how magical this trip has been already…everyday is different and fun and the kids are LOVING it.

‘I’m not gonna lie it’s tough with the three of them and I feel exhausted by the end of the day but I would definitely recommend a trip like this with young kids. Otto has been on all the drives so far and even started roaring at a lion today!
