The following two beaches are famous, but they're not in Fortaleza per se. They're located respectively in Paraipaba and Caucaia, two (almost) neighboring cities. You'll have no problem getting to each of those destinations if you're driving (or being driven around, hehe).

Although I have been talking wonders about Fortaleza, I’m yet to visit the city properly.

It’s a different thing when you grow up in a place to visit it as a tourist. Now that I live relatively far, I can see all Fortaleza has to offer in terms of touristic attractions. And I have to say, if you’re visiting this city, I’m jealous. I’m jealous because you will be able to visit the beaches, the theater, all the other touristic points of interest that live in my imagination.

Your first step needs to be figuring out what’s your goal since that can affect your choice. You may be an explorer type of visitor or one who just wants to relax. Nightlife is spread out through the streets, so that’s covered. You should consider who is coming along with you since not all neighborhoods fit everyone.

Mucuripe (Best Central Location) 

Mucurpie, sometimes just called Mucuripe Beach, is an old fishing village that turned into a district. While it isn’t the downtown area, it’s well located, with many tourist spots and entertainment options. We don’t actually recommend Downtown in this Fortaleza travel guide because it’s not good for you as a visitor.

Futuro Beach (Best for Families) 

Futuro Beach is waiting for you if your vacation is more of a family trip.

Iracema Beach is an old neighborhood that still offers a lot despite having seen better days. If you are by yourself and on a budget or in a large group, then this district will provide you with a good location for a smaller price.

You can’t drink tap water anywhere in the country. It is treated well enough for external use, but don’t drink it!

This means you can safely brush your teeth and do your personal hygiene, but no Fortaleza travel guide will tell you to go ahead and chug it. It’s best to buy bottled water or keep a reusable one for refilling.

But most restaurants have filters for making ice and drinks, so you can ask for some ‘água da casa.’ If they don’t have it available, then just buy bottled water.

Fortaleza Slow Season: Brazil’s slow season for tourism is during fall/winter, from March to June, a few weeks in July, and all then all the way through November. If you are hoping to come to Brazil and get better deals while doing it, then this is your time frame to book the trip. 

Fortaleza Shoulder Seasons: The Shoulder seasons in Brazil are generally Fall and Spring. These months offer you a balance of reasonable conditions for traveling. And since Fortaleza has stable temperatures year-round, you can get endless beach days!

Do I Need a Visa for Brazil? 

The Short Answer: If you are traveling from the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, the answer is no, UNTIL October 1, 2023, then the answer is yes. Currently, no visa is necessary from European Union (EU) countries. This looks like it will be the case even after October 1, 2023. 

The Longer Answer Traveling to Brazil is a great experience, but it is important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row so to speak. That means having the proper documentation needed to enter the country. 

Here’s what you need to know about securing a visa for Brazil, specifically for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and European Union (EU) countries.

Section 1: US, Canada, Australia, and Japan Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan can currently enter visa-free travel to Brazil for tourism or business purposes. 

This applies to stays of up to 90 days within a 12-month period. All you need is a valid passport with an expiry date at least six months beyond your intended departure from Brazil.

Brazil is looking to implement the visa requirement again for these four countries as of October 1, 2023, so plan in advance for this. 

Section 2: European Union (EU)  Nationals

For most European Union citizens, including those from the UK, Germany, France, and Italy, also benefit from visa-free entry to Brazil. 

This policy permits EU nationals to stay in Brazil for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. Like others, they will need a passport that is valid for at least six months past the date of entry into Brazil.

Visa and immigration requirements can and do change. It is always advised to check the latest information from the official government websites of Brazil or your home country’s foreign travel advisory services before making travel plans.

Not being fluent doesn’t stand in the way of having a great time in Brazil. It is nice to learn a little bit of whatever language is spoken so you’re not relying solely on translating apps. It is something I try to do, and if you are like me,

Here Are Some Great Language Preparation Options for Your Trip to Brazil:

Learn A Little Portuguese: It is best to use language-learning platforms that have apps like Duolingo and Pimsleur. They have interactive courses to help you gain some confidence to speak Portuguese when you come here.

Use Google Translate App: This app can be a lifesaver in emergencies. Whenever you have to navigate language barriers, make sure to have it downloaded on your phone. Also, remember to have a Brazilian/Travel SIM card with plenty of data.

Get a Portuguese Phrasebook : And just in case, I’d also recommend you pack a Portuguese phrasebook like the ‘Lonely Planet Portuguese Phrasebook .’ It is good to have a non-digital assistant on hand to help with communication and local language.

Fortaleza is a major city on Brazil 's northeast coast, and the capital of Ceará state. It is one of the largest cities in Brazil and certainly one of the most vibrant. The city is perhaps the most popular domestic package tour destination, and Europeans are following suit. Despite being quite a party town, the carnival in Fortaleza is rather feeble, though growing bigger by the year, with the largest parades being maracatu -style. In 2018, there were 2.6 million inhabitants in the city, and 4.1 million in the metropolitan area.

Some local historians fiercely defend the thesis that the very first European to set foot in South America was the Spaniard Vicente Yáñez Pinzón, who allegedly landed where Fortaleza's port is today in January 1500, a few months before Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral's much celebrated arrival in Porto Seguro on April 25.

The official history of Fortaleza as a permanent settlement dates back to the 17th century, when the Dutch had a brief dispute with the Portuguese over the territory. The first settlement was known as Fort Schoonenborch and it was founded by the Dutch West Indian Company in 1649. During Portuguese and Brazilian rule, the city has had several names, always beginning with Fortaleza ( fortress in Portuguese).

Probably the most proudly remembered occasion of local history was the abolition of slavery in 1884, four years ahead of Brazil as a whole. The mulatto Dragão do Mar , native of Aracati , reached a near-mythical status for his role in the boycott of slave ships starting in 1881, and is still widely recognized.

The author José de Alencar is so important for the identity of the city of Fortaleza (and also the state), that its inhabitants are nicknamed Alencarinos . He eagerly discussed the origins of the people, languages and geographical names of the region. Most important in this context is the novel Iracema , with its renowned main character lending her name to several neighborhoods and inspiring statues around town.

In Brazil, Fortaleza is famous for the forró music and dance, and its crop of comedians. Cearenses (people born in Ceará) are also famous for their ease and fondness for a good verbal joke, from which derives a colorful and hilarious local vocabulary (e.g. a very ugly person is "a dog sucking mangoes"). Travellers with any degree of fluency in Portuguese are likely to be amazed.

Traditional folklore, a fusion of European, African and native traditions, is manifested through dances and songs unique to this region:

• Bumba-meu-boi or Boi-Ceará — songs and dances with Luso-Iberican influence dedicated to the religious cult of the ox
• Dança do coco — of African origin, this is a dance danced by males on the beach but elsewhere it's danced by couples
• Torém — an indigenous dance originating among the Tremembé people
• Maracatu — a dancing procession of African origin originally danced to honor kings
• Violeiros, Cantadores e Emboladores — a musical manifestation, often used as a way to express social criticism
• Reisado — an event held every Epiphany, where people go from house to house singing and dancing and receiving gifts

With a tropical climate, the weather is always sunny year-round, but never extremely hot. Temperatures range from 22 ºC (72 ºF) to 31°C (87 ºF) with rare exceptions. There is usually a breeze blowing from the east softening the temperature and forming the sand dunes. The rainy season occurs in Fortaleza between February and May. In the driest months, between July and December, the winds are stronger and lessen the heat, rainfall practically stop and these are the most favorable months for windsurfers.

These districts are probably the most interesting for visitors. From west to east:

• Centro — Downtown and its Praça do Ferreira are full of shops and restaurants.
• Praia de Iracema — Just northeast of downtown. Popular among travelers, this district features affordable accommodation and lively nightlife.
• Praia de Meireles — A little further east along the beach, with some major hotels.
• Mucuripe — The commercial port of Fortaleza.
• Praia do Futuro — Well to the east (8 km) of downtown, but has the best beach in Fortaleza. On the downside the sea can be rough here and the water is often polluted by oil.

Tourist office

Several municipal tourist information offices around, the most convenient being at the airport , the Central Market and Beira Mar (halfway between McDonald's and the fish market).

The terminal was opened in 1998 and extended in 2014 for the FIFA World Cup. Services here include federal police , post office, health authorities , Internet cafe, tourist information and travel agencies.  

There are flights from almost every major city in Brazil and internationally from Bogotá Buenos Aires ( Gol ), Frankfurt ( Condor ), Lisbon ( TAP ), Miami ( LATAM ) and Praia (Cabo Verde Airlines). The status of flights can be checked online .

Allow at least an hour for immigration control if you fly in from abroad. Double it if there is another international flight shortly before yours.

From the airport to the city

There is an urban bus 404 Aeroporto/Benfica which runs frequently between the airport and the center, where you can find buses to virtually anywhere in Fortaleza (not recommended at night). This bus also stops at the main bus station . Going to the urban beaches can either be done this way, or by crossing the parking lot(keep slightly to the right) and the highway (somewhat on your left) and catch the 027 Siqueira Papicu/Aeroporto , which will take you pretty straight to Praça Portugal / Shopping Aldeota in 25 minutes, traffic allowing. (Not recommended at night) From here you can either walk some 7 blocks along Avenida Desembargador Moreira to the beach of Meireles , or you can wait for Circular 1 which passes within a block of most hotels in Meireles and Praia Iracema . Reverse this process (start with Circular 2 ) to get to the airport, which is slightly easier as the bus then stops right in front of the terminal, and not on the highway.

There are two types of taxis , follow the signs: Airport taxis are more expensive, and have fixed prices. Most tourist areas fall within the most expensive zone, charging R$ 32.40 (R$ 48.60 on rate 2 ). Regular taxis offer just about the same comfort, and run on the meter, stopping at about R$ 25 (R$ 40 rate 2) to Praia de Iracema or Meireles. Bargaining is tough out here, but fairly easy in the opposite direction.

• To Natal 8 times daily (3 of these stopping in Mossoró ) by Nordeste and Guanabara R$ 35-150, 6–8 hours.
• To Salvador daily at 19:00 by Itapemirim [dead link] . R$ 190. 22 hours.

Taxi to Beira Mar is about R$ 15 and 15–20 minutes. The bus 099 Siqueira - Mucuripe / Barão de Studart (on Sundays this line is substituted by 078 Siqueira - Mucuripe , bus stop around the corner) will take you the same place in around 30 minutes, right from the doorstep of the bus station! If you are heading for Praia de Iracema (or anywhere else west of Av. Barão de Studart ), take two lefts from the bus station's main entrance, then cross the street, and take the bus 073 Siqueira - Praia de Iracema . The bus 404 Aeroporto - Benfica takes you to the airport in less than 15 minutes.

Most all lines here are en route between the main bus station and western Ceará (such as Jeri or Sobral . Access from Av. Desembargador Moreira by bus 076 Conjunto Ceará / Aldeota in about 40 minutes.

A third bus station, has lines by the companies São Benedito (for Canoa ), Fretcar and Expresso Guanabara mostly en route between the main bus terminal and the southern and eastern parts of Ceará.  

Fortaleza is connected to the rest of Brazil by Federal Highways BR-116, BR-222, BR-020 and BR-304 plus State Highways CE-040 and CE-085. Driving in Fortaleza is not recommended, as the streets are mostly in a very bad shape.

Orientation

Most tourists will not go more than 5 blocks from the sea, except for the airport and bus station, and perhaps a shopping mall. The following main streets will take you from the city centre to the fish market, by way of Dragão do Mar and the beaches Iracema and Meireles , totalling some 6 km: Avenida Almirante Barroso , Av. Beira Mar (until Rua Ildefonso Albano , where it's cut off by an artificial beach -the aterro .), Av. Historiador Raimundo Girão , Av. Beira Mar (from Av. Rui Barbosa ). This last three km section of Beira Mar (literally Sea Side ) is by far the most attractive part of the city, with police stands and patrols making it fairly safe around the clock, although rather deserted from midnight to dawn. The Avenida Beira Mar with its broad pavement stops at the fish market. From here to the beach of Praia do Futuro is the port area, backed by a refinery and slums. Walking here at daytime can be risky; at night, it's asking for trouble.

The Metrofor network consists as of 2015 of two operational lines; the South line and the West line. Three other lines are in construction or planning. A single ticket costs R$3.60, for students half the price.

Like any major Brazilian city, Fortaleza can be done almost entirely by bus . Ticket price is R$ 4.50 (Sundays and a few holidays R$ 3.90), and if you get off at a terminal (there are nine such bus terminals in Fortaleza) you can change lines without paying again. But if you change buses somewhere else, you will need to buy a new ticket. Most lines run 7 days a week 05:00-23:00, give or take. The lines listed here, deemed most useful for tourists, will run roughly every 10 minutes daytime weekdays, frequencies perhaps halved nighttime and weekends, and down to once an hour after midnight. Only the most useful parts of the routes are described. Some lines have the number 1 or 2 after their names, only to indicate direction, others don't. The same bus with the same number and name could be running either from A to B, or from B to A. Ask!

• Centro/Beira Mar Caça e Pesca is comfy and air conditioned. It runs Beira Mar and all along Praia do Futuro. Returning it swaps Beira Mar for Abolição. This bus can get very packed from Praia do Futuro before sunset. Risk of muggings at Praia do Futuro bus stops after dark.
• Circular 1/2 - runs 24 hours a day Downtown - Mercado Central - Dragão do Mar - Historiador Raimundo Girão - Abolicão - Desembargador Moreira/Shopping Aldeota.
• Grande Circular 1/2 - runs 24 hours a day. Downtown - Dragão do Mar - Historiador Raimundo Girão - Abolição - Praia do Futuro - Terminal Papicu - Shopping Iguatemi.
• Centro Iguatemi - R$ 3,00. Last bus leaves Iguatemi at 22:00, does not run on Sundays. Comfy and air conditioned. City centre - Monsenhor Tabosa - Abolição - Desembargador Moreira (Shopping Aldeota), leaves you inside the Iguatemi shopping mall.

All 4000-odd taxis in town run on the same meter system [dead link] , except the special cabs at the airport. Start price is R$ 4, then R$ 2 per km on rate 1 and R$ 3/km on rate 2 ( these are old prices, for newer ones, research on new sources ). The latter is charged every day from 20:00 to 06:00, Saturdays also from 13:00 to 20:00 and all Sunday, public holidays, and the whole month of December. Waiting is charged R$ 20 per hour.

It is mandatory for taxis to display the fare system on one of the rear side windows. Do not take a cab without such a posting.

Cab drivers in Fortaleza are fairly honest, although a few will put the meter on rate 2 too often. The meter should always run unless you have fixed a price before getting into the car. Most trips that would exceed R$ 10 on the meter are negotiable, and when you pass R$ 30 on the meter a discount of up to 50% could be obtained if you bargain well. Taxi stands are abundant, but it can often prove easier to negotiate the fare if you hail one off the street.

By moto taxi

Moto taxis, i.e. motorcycles that function as taxis, can be picked up at their own stands, ask locals if you cannot find one. Depending on the traffic flow, this can be a rather scary experience. In general about half the price of a cab, starting at R$ 4 for runs up to ten blocks or so. Fares depend on company and distance.

By e-hailing

Fortaleza is covered by some e-hailing services, notably Uber.

Brazilian city traffic makes this option a bit frustrating for anyone who honks less than once a minute while driving back home. The city is best covered by bus and cab, but a car can make many day trips to outlying beaches. Rental shops are virtually everywhere, and they have motorcycles for rent too. Despite huge signs claiming low prices, you will hardly end up paying less than R$ 60 for the most basic car, plus fuel. Beach buggies start at R$ 100.

Quite an effort has been put into restoring colonial architecture over the last years. Still there is no area that is completely "clean", but the stretch from the beachfront of Praia de Iracema , via Dragão do Mar and to Praça do Ferreira is steadily improving and worth a walk.

One thing worth seeing is the sunset , either from Ponte Metalica, Praia Iracema, or the beach by the fish market, Mucuripe.

Architecture and statues

Several architectural styles are represented in Fortaleza contemporary (Centro Cultural Dragão do Mar), modern (Mausoleum of Castelo Branco), classical (Museu do Ceará), neo-classical (central railway station), art deco (Cine São Luis), art noveau (Theatro José de Alencar) and neo Gothic (cathedral).

The architectural landmark of the city, and also declared a National Historic Landmark. Finished in 1912, there are performances almost every evening. Visits every hour on the hour, except noon. • -3.72476 -38.52431 2 Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza ( Igreja da Sé ), Rua Sobral 1 , ☏ +55 85 3231-4196 . Its sooty façade gives the cathedral a somewhat brutal look. But it still has nice mosaics, and the 75-m-high towers and its size (its capacity is 5000 persons) are impressive. The main western façade has large windows and the sun lights up the church during the evening mass. French architect George Mounier allegedly was inspired by the Cologne cathedral. Note the 40 year span between the initial works and the inaugural mass, above the main entrance. Masses daily except Mondays.  
• -3.71914 -38.51605 3 Estoril , Rua dos Tabajaras 397, Praia de Iracema ( Near Pirata Bar ). This mansion, built in 1925 as Vila Morena , and later used as a casino, a restaurant (when its current name was applied) and a rather political bar, is of peculiar architecture. It was virtually rebuilt in the 1990s, and is undergoing another refurbishment to be used for public cultural arrangements.

This former meat market was imported piece by piece from Europe and set up in 1897. Refurbished and now used as a handicrafts fair with a variety of cultural events five days a week from Afro-Brazilian culture and art to contemporary dance and the local forró music style.  
• -3.7203 -38.509 6 Iracema Statue ( Estátua de Iracema ) ( Praia de Iracema ). Also known as the Guardian of Iracema, this statue was constructed to honor the author José de Alencar. The statue depicts the protagonist in his novel Iracema. Another one stands in Messejena Lake in the south of the city.  
• -3.72371 -38.51931 7 Seminário da Prainha . A Catholic seminary with a neoclassical church from the 19th century. If you're interested in the city's local religious history or want to do some genealogical studies, this is the right place to visit.  

Squares and parks

Several artisans are selling their work there, musicians are performing and there are several bars and restaurants with international cuisine as well as night clubs of different styles. • -3.7499 -38.4856 13 Parque Ecologico do Cocó . The Cocó Ecological Park is the city's largest green area, near the Iguatemi -mall. One of the largest urban parks in South America, it's a piece of jungle in the middle of Fortaleza and is the most important showpiece of Fortaleza's ecological heritage. The park is popular for recreation among the locals and the place for seeing some local flora and fauna without leaving the city.

Opened in 1999, the center has 30,000 m 2 of attractions including an art museum, a library, a cinema, a planetarium, an amphitheater, art workshops and the Culture Memorial of Ceara. The surrounding offers some of the highlights of Fortaleza's nightlife .

There are two nice city beaches, -3.7184 -38.5203 1 Praia de Iracema and -3.7249 -38.4913 2 Meireles . Some people discourage bathing here (see Stay healthy ), although they are often rated green by authorities. Iracema is often the place for large events and gatherings, in particular the New Year celebrations. The whole stretch from the Ponte Metálica (aka Ponte Inglesa ) pier to the fish market is paralleled by the Avenida Beira Mar , very nice for an evening stroll. A string of shacks line the beachfront, mostly good for drinking and people watching. Some of these, particularly when serving in the sand, have up to three different menus with varying prices. Sunbeds can be charged up to R$ 30 a day, although the real price is R$ 3–5. Unless otherwise stated, cross the street for food. The busiest strip (with the most expensive beer), including the bulk of beggars, prostitutes and vendors, is right in front of McDonald's , to avoid these go east of the market. • G2 , a notch cheaper than the rest.

The most attractive urban beach is -3.732 -38.4561 3 Praia do Futuro , about 5 km ( unsafe to walk) from Meireles . Windy, with rather strong currents and undertows, swimming can be a challenge, but for a dip it's fine. Some 150(!) beach shacks, here a selection from north (closest to Beira Mar) to south, with their special features:

• Marulhos . Reggae music and good food. Try the escondidinho .
• Croco Beach . Plenty gringos. "After Beach" with live music on Sundays, sunset to eightish, no forro! Taxi drivers get a R$ 2 commission for each head they land here, get a discount on the fare!
• Sorriso do Sol . Reggae.
• Vira Verão . Young Brazilian crowd. If you're lucky, you'll get a table.
• Vila Galé . Belongs to the hotel. Perhaps the neatest appearance, definitely the most expensive!
• Chico do Carangueijo . Clean, popular, good food, specializing in crab, sometimes live music.
• Côco Beach and Boa Vida . Mainly foreigners and their crew, live forró.

The slums (favelas) of the city are next to Praia do Futuro, and that the beach may not be safe even in daytime. Nevertheless, as tourism business has grown bigger at the beach, also police presence has increased. At the very end of Praia do Futuro its name changes to -3.7628 -38.4401 4 Caça e Pesca . Freshwater swimming in a strong current where the river Cocó meets the ocean.

• There is good surfing on the beaches, and frequent competitions at Praia do Futuro .

• Kite and windsurfing are very popular in Ceará. If you aren't familiar with the sports, there are several schools on the beaches. Good conditions most of the year, with winds up to 40 knots.
• Windzen , Praia do Futuro ( Next to Vira Verao ), ☏ +55 85 98809-2507 . Equipment (Naish dealer) and classes. Helpful with info about out-of-town spots.  
• A couple of motorized schooners and a catamaran do 2 hour cruises along the city beaches at R$ 30 per person, setting out daily at 10:00 and 16:00 from near the Iracema -statue, where they also have their ticket booths. The latter departure is better, as you get the sunset. Bring swim-gear. Minimum of ten people required and thus it's often cancelled in the low season. Another schooner takes you all the way to Cumbuco at 09:00, lands you for lunch and has buses you back to Fortaleza before 17:00. R$ 130.
• In addition it's possible to rent a boat with a skipper for sightseeing or fishing at your own pace.

• -3.8434 -38.3908 5 Beach Park ( 13 km southeast of Fortaleza ). South America's biggest water park with the world's biggest toboggan. The park also features a hotel and a concert stage.  
• The nearest golf club is in neighbouring Iguape , some 30 minutes by car from Beira Mar .

• Shopping Aldeota and Shopping Del Paseo [dead link] are walking distance from Beira Mar , along Av. Desembargador Moreira .
• The largest complex is at the Iguatemi -mall, with some 12 showrooms mostly displaying the latest fare from Hollywood.
• At Dragão do Mar rooms, you will find mostly alternative films (art, cult, history), either foreign or national.

Every Sunday tents are built up in Parque de Cocó offering entertainment and activities from gymnastics courses to ziplining. Ziplining is particularly popular so you should be standing in line already at 07:00. These activities and events are free of charge.

• Fortal . Fortaleza´s Salvador -style out-of-season carnival (allegedly the largest in Brazil) kicks off in a purpose-built area near Praia do Futuro . Direct buses from the Papicu terminal. Thursday - Saturday from dusk till dawn. End of July.  
• Vida e Arte . A range of Brazilian music and other performances. January.  
• Carnival . Although carnival here is rather dull, the city's pré-carnaval is a major happening, all the way from New Year until the real thing starts in February or March. Several venues, the most accessible at Dragão do Mar Saturdays from 15:00. There's also another carnival the last week of July.  
• Gay parade . The local Gay Parade , officially named Parada pela Diversidade Sexual de Fortaleza , happens along Beira Mar on the last Sunday of June, in memory of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York.  

There are a few private lesson on offer for foreigners who want to learn Portuguese . These typically cost around R$ 20 per hour.

The state of Ceará has a large textile industry, and arguably the cheapest clothing in Brazil. Also the capital of hammocks , varieties of which can be found ranging from less than R$ 10 to more than R$ 100. Best place to buy is the range of small shops opposite the cathedral, city centre.

Changing cash euros or US dollars into reais is done close to interbank rates, meaning that it's better value than cash advances on credit or debit cards. Many travel agencies exchange money, you mostly get slightly better rates moving away from Beira Mar .

For a true abundance of fruits and vegetables , in addition to meat, fish and whatever else you could think of for your kitchen, visit Mercado São Sebastião , at the east end of Av. Bezerra de Menezes , 4 blocks south and 5 west of Praça José de Alencar in the centre. The earlier you arrive, the greater the variety.

Handicraft and markets

There are handicraft shops all around the city, but the best places to go are the Feirinha da Beira Mar (Beach front fair, daily about 16:00 - 22:00) and the Mercado Central (near the cathedral). These places have a large number of stalls and shops, and competition drives prices down. On Monsenhor Tabosa street there's a street market with all kinds of goods, however beware that pirated stuff is pretty common here.

A popular vacation destination, there is a wide variety of restaurants from steak houses ( churrascarias ) to pizzerias and fast food restaurants. The best concentration of restaurants in town is found in the Varjota neighbourhood, especially along Rua Frederico Borges and its side streets, starting some five blocks inland from Beira Mar .

Fortaleza is a fishing port, so fresh seafood is readily available in the restaurants. If you are a bit more courageous, buy your shrimp/lobster/squid/whatever, straight from the fish market stalls, and hit one of the nearby shacks to fry it for you. One kilo of mid-sized shrimps is about R$ 15; R$ 3 for frying; then plenty of beers! Thursday is crab day in Fortaleza, especially in the many shacks at Praia do Futuro. If you prefer beef, there are options for a rodízio (grilled meats en masse with a big buffet of salads and side dishes; but watch out for expensive drinks and desserts in these establishments).

Northeast (Brazil)#Eat and Brazil#Eat present some regional and national specialties worth trying. In addition to this, as you're in the topics it's easy to find:

• Fresh fruits : the variety is indescribable and the prices are low. Every self respecting grocer will have at least four different types of bananas for sale. Dozens of tropical delicacies (jabuticaba, sapoti, siriguela, murici, umbu, cajarana, carambola etc. etc. etc.) are unavailable anywhere else. Go to a supermarket and check them out.
• Suco : juice made of fresh fruits or frozen pulps. Check the stalls to have a notion of what's best in the season.

If your accommodation has bad or no breakfast , most large hotels let you take part in theirs for about R$ 10–12.

There is bad, watery, plastic flavoured ice cream galore in Fortaleza, as elsewhere in Brazil. Try these for some good sorbet — sorvete in Portuguese:

Fortaleza is a forró -stronghold. Virtually any day of the week you can find a party with live music and this traditional dance, sometimes in quite modern variations (often referred to as forró universitário ). On weekends you can choose from literally dozens of places. For a more genuine, tourist-free happening, you must move towards the outskirts of the city, paying up to R$ 30 by cab.

Traditionally, Fortaleza nightspots have their dedicated day of the week, like Pirata (below) on Mondays. So, when asking around for a place to go, always be specific on when.

For daytime drinking, which can be quite a party, specially on weekends, see the Beaches -section above. For a non-alcoholic refreshment; grab a chilled coconut from a stall at Beira Mar, starting at R$ 2!

The downtown ( Centro ) area is surprisingly scarce on waterholes, which would be more than welcome after a hot afternoon's walking. An even more surprising exception is found in the park Passeio Público (officially Praça dos Mártires ): A small kiosk with outdoor seating serving lunch and cold drinks. Daily until 17:00.

The largest concentration of watering holes , very practical if you want to hit and miss and don't have a car, is at Dragão do Mar , Praia de Iracema . This area features refurbished colonial buildings, loads of open air seating, live music (sometimes charged), and happy hour beer. Fridays and Saturdays the party is everywhere:

Reservations are essential in January, when Brazilian holidaymakers pack in. September–November and March–May have room for bargaining at most posted prices. Many hotels will immediately give you 30% off.

Most hotels are on the strip Praia Iracema - Meireles - Mucuripe, parallel to Avenida Beira Mar, and up to about 4 blocks inland. Categories are spread about, but Praia Iracema has most budget options. Many cheap deals can be struck at Praia do Futuro, but beware of transport costs and lack of security at night.

In the tourist zone, Praia Iracema has the cheapest hotels. A number of cheap options in the city centre, but the area goes seedy and unsafe at night. Unless you have a car, and can stay at Praia do Futuro , your best cost/benefit is probably along Avenida Dom Manuel , between Av. Monsenhor Tabosa and Av. Santos Dumont -just inland from Dragão do Mar . Stick to the main street after dark! Charging up to R$ 40 for a dorm bed, hostels are sometimes outpriced by cheap single rooms in the same area.

A typical modern two bedroom 65 m 2 flat, fully furnished and equipped 2 blocks from Beira Mar will cost around R$ 70 a day in low season, double in high. Monthly rates are about R$ 1200 low season, R$ 2000 or more peak. Mostly you have to pay electricity on top of this. Be aware that an air conditioner can set you back R$ 20 a day if you leave it running. Dozens of agencies.

Many hotels put "flat" or "residence" in their name. This mostly means that you can buy an apartment there, typically 40-50 m 2 with one bedroom and a tiny kitchen. Many of the owners will rent these out for a price substantially less than the one posted in the reception, particularly for longer terms. Monthly deals can come close to the R$ 1000 mark in low season, including linen change and cleaning. Ask the receptionsts for owners' phone numbers:

If you go for a furnished room with a bathroom (often no fridge or a/c), referred to as a kitchenette (often spelled "Kitnet", or anything in between), you will typically be charged R$ 3-400 a month in high season. Praia Iracema has most of these.

• Internet is everywhere, with greatly varying comfort, hardware and bandwidth. R$ 3-4 an hour is an OK price in tourist areas—any more is too much. If you go inland you can get down to R$1/h.
• There is a free Wi-Fi zone in the café of the 24-hour Pão de Açúcar supermarket at Avenida Abolição .
• Several post offices along or near Beira Mar : Right in front of the Praia Iracema church; on Av. Monsenhor Tabosa just down from Ideal Clube ; a small booth almost in the sand in front of Clube Nautico ; in the mall of Scala Residence .

Even though the police are working hard to make Fortaleza safer and the city is less dangerous than it used to be, it's still one of Brazil's most dangerous cities. Avoid showing valuable items in public, carrying huge bags (a plastic bag from a local supermarket can be a good substitute) and showing that you're a tourist. The tourist zone around Beira Mar is relatively safe, thanks to a constant police presence.

• There are countless stories of single foreign men being robbed by prostitutes, apparent or not, who they take back to their rooms. Reportedly they sometimes employ a drug to knock victims out; otherwise, they just rely on your voluntarily exaggerated alcohol/drug consumption. Be aware that virtually all hotels and apartment buildings will register visitors, particularly late-night ones. As soon as you are aware of missing valuables, get the reception to pass you the data of the suspect and go straight to see the police, above. The sooner you act, the greater the chance of getting your stuff back. Money mostly evaporates instantly, though.
• Although most commercial districts of the city are fairly safe, including the center and the tourist area around Beira Mar , pickpocketing, bag-snatching and other non-violent robberies are always a possibility. Never flash valuables and beware of beggars that keep touching you.
• Praia do Futuro is bordered by one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in town, the Serviluz slum. Do not under any circumstances walk through deserted areas of this beach, even if you are going through them between two crowded places. Bus stops are notoriously robbery-ridden after sunset — even if it's only 17:45.
• There have been a number of cases when foreigners have been detained at the airport with large amounts of drugs , particularly cocaine, on their way out of the country. The Brazilian Federal Police have been working hard: Don't even think about it!

Prostitution

Formerly known as the one of the Brazilian prostitution capitals, fortunately from 2002 onwards, with the various municipal administrations, the city has changed its appearance and now presents itself as a classic tourist resort, suitable for families and couples. With the closure of almost all the clubs and bars dedicated to prostitution, the arrival of sex tourists has dropped drastically, so much so that tourism of this type has almost disappeared in Fortaleza.

Stay healthy

If you travel west from Fortaleza, into the states of Maranhão , Pará or further, Brazilian authorities recommend that you get a yellow fever vaccination. An International Certificate of Vaccination can be issued if you have the shot taken at the airport or in the city center. If you already have your booklet, and only need a new shot and the corresponding entry, this is best done at the medical center at Avenida Antônio Justa , one block from Pão de Açúcar , weekdays 07:00 to 16:30, free of charge.

As elsewhere in Brazil, some beaches in Fortaleza are not suitable for bathing, and conditions can change from day to day. On the day of your visit, check the map of the latest bathing bulletin (in Portuguese, boletim de balneabilidade ) of the state's Environment Department (SEMACE).

• For visa extensions and any other issue between a foreigner and the Polícia Federal , head to their office at Rua Paula Rodrigues 304, Bairro de Fátima , near the main bus station. M-F 08:00-18:00. Bus 099 Siqueira - Mucuripe / Barão de Studart to/from Avenida Abolição .
• Neighboring Maranguape includes the Cachaça Museum, hosted by Ypióca, one of the country's most widespread brands.
• Redenção – see the Museu Senzala Negro Liberato, a monument of slavery and liberation, with a nearby cachaça -destillery
• The Jazz and Blues Festival is a continuation of the carnival in Guaramiranga , the weekend after.

Out-of-town beaches

Any tour agency, and a number of pushers along Beira Mar, can offer you daytrips, and longer packages, to outlying beaches. The one thing they have in common is the price – it's fixed in between them, and it's far too expensive. Oceanview [dead link] is old in the game and has a site with prices. If you are a group of 3-4 persons, a taxi can mostly be negotiated for less.

• Cumbuco is a small fishing village, grown into a kite-surfers' paradise. Fresh water lakes with swimming nearby. Dune buggy tours. Horseback riding along the beach. A traditional fishing raft, Jangada , gives you a postcard view of the coastline. Buses from Avenida Abolição R$ 4,50.
• Jericoacoara is among Brazil's finest, and hence makes its way into any global listing. Buses (changing to trucks in Jijoca ) twice daily from outside Praiano Palace Hotel at Beira Mar .
• Canoa Quebrada used to be quite rustic, attracting mostly hippies. Now it's slowly growing into a resort town. Can be done as a day trip (R$ 40, many agencies), but is worth a longer stay, particularly for its weekend nightlife.
• Some 16 km outside Fortaleza, at the beach of Porto das Dunas , is a huge water park with slides and other wet interactive fun, Beach Park . Stiffly priced at R$ 170 for a day. Fortaleza is easily reached from the south via route 116 and from the west by route 222. Highway 402 runs from the north.

Having recently explored the dynamic city of Fortaleza in Brazil, I wanted to give you guys a few tops tips on what to do there, where to stay, and the best ways to get around. Fortaleza is the large capital of the Brazilian state of Ceará and is a bustling place with around four million inhabitants. As such there is plenty to keep you busy while staying here, not to mention about 25 stunning beaches! From history, culture, and nightlife to tasty local cuisine, Fortaleza offers something for everyone. Here I’ve picked my favorites…

Best things to do in Fortaleza

Check out the cathedral.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza (also known as St Joseph’s) is one of the highlights of the city with its neo-Gothic architectural style drawing parallels with European churches like Cologne and Notre Dame. The cathedral holds up to 5,000 people and is well worth a visit while staying in the city.

Buy souvenirs at the Central Market

The sprawling stalls of the Mercado Central is heaven for shopaholics with everything from clothing to food all under one roof. This is the perfect place to browse for souvenirs and with over 500 shops you’re sure to find something you love.

Spend a day at the Beach Park

Beach Park is the biggest aqua park in South America and is fun for all the family no matter your age. The park has a whole host of slides and rides for you to enjoy throughout the day as well as beach bars, restaurants and a decent strip of sand so you can relax while the kids continue to go around and around on the rides! Insano is a slide with a 41m drop so is ideal for those seeking to get their heart racing!

Walk along Beira Mar

The Beira-Mar boardwalk is one of the top spots in Fortaleza and is a great place to while away a few hours. This beach walk promenade stretches along the coast between the high-rise hotels and the shore, making for a stark and striking contrast. The Beira-Mar always has something going on, with vendors selling everything from street food to handicrafts, bars and restaurants galore and people putting on mini performances throughout the day so you’ll never be short of something to see or do.

Head to the Fish Market

The Mercado de Peixes do Mucuripe (or fish market to you and me) is an awesome place to take in Brazilian life, with fishermen coming in and out on their traditional wooden boats and locals sitting around dining on fresh seafood. Wander around the market to see the crazy variety of fish on offer before finding a spot on the seafront to devour a hearty plate of prawns.

Açai is a superfood that originates in the Brazilian States of Amazônia and Pará and has become famous the world over. When you’re in Brazil there’s no excuse not to try an açai smoothie or fruit bowl for breakfast! Açai is deep purple in colour and has a rich fruity flavour. But be warned, despite being full of antioxidants, açai berries are quite calorific and high in fat so you probably won’t want to be eating them all day every day no matter how tasty they are!

Watching the sunset from Mirante in Praia de Iracema is a lovely way to end your day in Fortaleza. The beachfront atmosphere is chilled and the views across the water are spectacular! Grab a cocktail and watch the sky turn a deep shade of orange before wandering along the seafront to find a spot for dinner. The bars and clubs around this area are fun too so it’s a good place for a dance after dark. 

Taste the local cuisine

The gastronomy scene in Fortaleza has really taken off over the last few years with markets, bars and restaurants all making the most of local produce. One of the best ingredients here is crab that is caught daily and served up with tasty sauces and a salad and rice combo. Whether you head to a rustic fish market or a stylish beach-front bar like Moleskine Gastrobar, you’re sure to try some sumptuous seafood! 

Try kite surfing, surfing or parapente at Praia de Futuro

Water sports are a fun way to enjoy the stunning views around Fortaleza. With everything from tranquil stand-up paddle-boarding, to activities like fly-boarding and paragliding for the adrenaline-junkies, Praia do Futuro is a great beach spot to spend a day. Even if you don’t want to try the water sports, it’s entertaining to while away a few hours on the beach watching people out on the water.

Spend the day at one of the beach clubs in Qumbuco

The beach clubs around Qumbuco are smart and stylish and are a cool spot to hang out with locals and tourists alike. The bars feature flowing drinks, sprawling pools and top DJs so you can drink and dance all afternoon and evening!  

Have dinner at the Colosso Lake Lounge

The Colosso is a great place to have dinner while watching the sun set over the lake. If you come earlier in the day you can even do some stand up paddling. The restaurant serves modern food and nice cocktails.

Where to stay in Fortaleza

We stayed at the Oasis Atlantico Fortaleza which is right on the Avenue Beira Mar and has great sea views. The handicraft market is right outside and with the beach just seconds away you’re in one of the best spots in the city! The hotel features a pool with a swim-up bar as well as another restaurant and bar so even if you don’t leave the hotel, you’ll be able to try great Brazilian cuisine and cocktails.

How to get around Fortaleza

We used Uber pretty much the whole time we were in Fortaleza. While there is another official taxi service that runs around the city, we found Uber to be cheap, safe and convenient. Of course, we also spent a lot of the time walking around the city and along the boardwalk as this is the best way to get a real taste of a place and see what’s going on around town!

How to get to Fortaleza Brazil

If you’re traveling from Europe, there are direct flights from Lisbon, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris to Fortaleza’s Pinto Martins Airport, the closest major airport, which is 180 km away.

If you’re coming from the USA, there are direct flights from Orlando and Miami.

Located in the northeast of Brazil , Fortaleza is the capital of Ceará state and the fifth most populated city in the country, with more than 2.6 million people. A big and charming city with several beaches, cliffs, palm trees, dunes, lagoons and a lot of history.

My first time in Fortaleza was in 2007, it was also my first solo trip, first time on an airplane and my first lost luggage (a person took my luggage by mistake but I found it later). Then, in 2018 I had the opportunity of reviving some of these memories and making new ones, it was really special.

In this article you will find everything you need to know to plan your trip: what to do in Fortaleza , where is it located , how to get there , when is the best time to visit , what to bring in your suitcase , where to stay , where to eat , and much more.

Where is Fortaleza, Brazil?

Fortaleza is located in the Northeast region of Brazil . The city belongs to the state of Ceará that is located between Rio Grande do Norte and Piauí, about 3.150 km from São Paulo.

How to get to fortaleza, brazil.

The quickest and easiest way to get to Fortaleza is to fly, but you can also drive or take a bus depending on where you are in Brazil.

If you choose to get to Fortaleza by plane you will arrive at Pinto Martins International Airport (Airport Code: FOR), which receives daily flights from several regions of Brazil.

All of the Brazilian airlines operate at this Airport (Azul, Gol and Latam). If you come from southeast Brazil on a direct flight, it will take about 3 and half hours to get to this city.

A trip by bus from São Paulo to Fortaleza takes more or less 2 days and some hours, it depends on the chosen itinerary, some routes go straight to Fortaleza, others have a stop in Rio de Janeiro , or Natal and some other places.

If your choice is to travel from São Paulo to Fortaleza , you should know that this journey will take around 3 or 4 days, depending on how much you can handle driving each day, after all, there are 3.000 km to be covered. A direct trip, without breaks, is estimated between 40 and 43 hours.

You can choose between two different routes. You can go around the state of Minas Gerais, passing through Brasília, and crossing the states of Bahia and Piauí until you reach Ceará through BR-020 , in this way the amount of money that you will spend with tolls is estimated at R$ 130. Another possible route is to cross the state of Minas Gerais, then Bahia and Piauí through BR-116 , in this option the cost with toll will be around R$ 50. It is important to remember that if you choose to go by car you will have to consider the cost of gas and hotels.

Getting around Fortaleza

To get around Fortaleza, you can choose between renting a car, taking public transportation (bus), Uber, a taxi or taking day trips with a travel agency. However, to define which alternative is best for you, you first need to define your trip itinerary.

If you like autonomy and intend to go around Fortaleza on your own, renting a car can be a good option (find car rental options in Fortaleza here) but it is important to know that Fortaleza is a big city, with traffic and you will have to worry about parking.

Another point to be considered is that the most popular attractions and the most beautiful beaches are around 160 km away, so before renting a car make sure that you are willing to drive long distances to go and come back without drinking any beer or caipirinhas at the beach, after all, if you have an alcoholic drink you can’t drive.

The most popular option for tourists is to book day tours with travel agencies like Murano Turismo , this way you don’t need to worry about anything.

To have dinner or to hang out around the city you can take a taxi, uber or local bus. If you stay in a hotel on Beira-mar Avenue, you can do everything else on foot.

Frequently asked questions about Fortaleza

As in any other big city in the world, you need to be careful. Our advice is to stay alert, don’t walk with valuable objects and don’t walk in areas far from Beira-mar Avenue at night. Ah, also don’t leave valuables unattended at the beach.

Fortaleza is full of attractions as you will see below in this article, so the number of days is up to you, according to the attractions and the nearby beaches that you would like to visit. We recommend at least 5 days, but 7 or a little more is the ideal to get to know the region very well.

To avoid rainy periods the best time to visit Fortaleza in Brazil is between August and December, which is the season of wind, with August being the best month to practice windsurf and kitesurf.

What to pack for Fortaleza

It is always hot in Fortaleza, so choose lightweight travel clothing and breathable fabrics. Here is a checklist of what to pack:

• shorts/dress/skirt
• windbreaker jacket (to use at night if you feel cold)
• backpack (to take on tours)
• UV protection T-shirt
• cap or hat (preferably that holds tight on the head, because it is often very windy in Fortaleza)
• sunscreen (preferably biodegradable)

Where to stay in Fortaleza, Brazil

Before deciding what is the best place to stay in Fortaleza you first need to define which region you would prefer to stay in.

In case you prefer to stay in the urban area of the city, with bars and restaurants nearby and to be able to walk to the arts and crafts fair at night, our recommendation is to book a hotel at Beira-mar Avenue .

If you want to stay in the city but not in a crowded area, choose Futuro Beach.

But, if the idea is to stay in a resort or a beachfront hotel , you can stay in amazing places around 30 Km away from Fortaleza like Porto das Dunas (near Beach Park), Iguape or Cumbuco Beach.

The Beach Park Resort Acqua has an artificial river named Acqua Link that provides access directly to Beach Park. It also has a kids area and an infinity pool facing Porto das Dunas beach.

Located in Aquiraz, only 300 meters away from Beach Park, Palm Beach has rooms with air conditioning, wi-fi and excellent service, a great pool and free parking.

Urban Beaches in Fortaleza

Iracema beach.

Iracema is the closest beach to downtown Fortaleza, right at the beginning of Beira-Mar Avenue. It has a busy boardwalk, with bars and restaurants in the surroundings and it is where the Iracema Statue and the Ingleses Bridge are located. By the way, the Ingleses Bridge (Ponte dos Ingleses), which is actually a pier, is an excellent place to watch the sunset .

Meireles Beach

Meireles Beach is in the middle of Beira-Mar Avenue, it is the region that concentrates the largest number of hotels, and consequently the largest movement. It has beach kiosks in all extension, places to practice sports and it is where the arts and crafts fair happens.

With a calm sea, it can be a good alternative to enjoy the beach.

Mucuripe Beach

An the end of Beira-Mar Avenue, Mucuripe Beach is an excellent place to eat fresh fish. There you can find the famous Fish Market , a nice spot to go at the beginning of the evening.

With a lot of fishing boats and calm waters, this is the region where the sailboat tours depart.

Futuro Beach

Futuro Beach is the best urban beach in Fortaleza , it is located a short distance from Beira-Mar Avenue. You can get there by cab/uber or by joining a day tour with a travel agency.

The beach avenue (Clóvis Arrais Maia Avenue) has, in all of its extension, several beach kiosks with a lot of infrastructure, chairs and tables, pool, playground for the kids and live music. Some well-known kiosks are:

West Coast Beaches

Cumbuco beach.

Only 30 km from Fortaleza, Cumbuco Beach offers buggy and quadricycle tours, and you can even choose to go to Cumbuco Beach by buggy from Fortaleza city .

From August to December is the wind season, so the ocean is painted with the colors of the sails of kitesurfers who love to stay here for several days and enjoy the resorts of the region.

Lagoinha Beach

This is one of my favorite beaches on the coast of Ceará . 110 km from Beira-mar Avenue in Fortaleza, the sea breeze, the coconut trees and the green ocean paint the tranquility of Lagoinha Beach .

Besides enjoying the beach, at Lagoinha you can take a buggy tour for around one and half hours that takes you to Almécegas Lagoon , some dunes and the Jegue Lagoon , considered the best of Ceará to swim and which is a common spot for kitesurfing.

This tour costs R$60 (Feb/21) with Murano Turismo.

Flecheiras is an amazing destination around 140 km from Fortaleza and it is still little known by tourists. With natural pools during the low tide and great restaurants like Maré Alta Flecheiras Restaurant , this is a good choice for a relaxing day on the beach.

It is important to know that during the high tide people should check with locals the right point to get into the ocean without taking any risks of falling into a hole.

This destination is quite far away (around 3 hours to go and 3 to come back), you can choose to stay some nights in the region . But if you want to have a tour as we did, through Murano Turismo it costs R$ 65 (Feb/2021).

Next to Flecheiras, and also a lesser known paradise, is Mundaú , where it is possible to take a boat tour to enjoy the beauty of Mundaú River and enjoy the natural pools during the low tide.

It is possible to find day tours to Mundaú and Flecheiras on the same day.

Jericoacoara

This destination deserves a long stay, for about 4 to 7 days as we show in this complete guide about Jericoacoara . But, if you are really short in terms of time, you can take a day trip from Fortaleza to Jeri (it is really hard, but possible). Murano Turismo offers this tour for R$199 per person (Feb/2021) and it has a stop at Lagoa do Paraíso and another one to watch the sunset at Pedra Furada .

East Coast Beaches

Porto das dunas (beach park).

Located about 26km from Fortaleza, Porto das Dunas is the beach of Beach Park (Water Park) and its hotels. This beach is frequented basically by hotel guests and those who like the Beach Park’s tent next door.

Águas Belas

At 66km from downtown Fortaleza, with beach kiosks and great natural pools that are formed where the river meets the sea, Águas Belas is an excellent option to go with kids. A day trip costs R$50 per person with Murano Turismo (Feb/21).

Morro Branco and Praia das Fontes

Morro Branco is the beach where the colorful walls that form the Monumento Nacional das Falésias are located, about 85 km away from the capital of Ceará. Here you can walk around a maze of cliffs , where it is possible to extract up to 12 different sand colors and the local community uses the sand to make handicrafts.

We took the 3 beaches in a 1 day tour with Murano Turismo for R$70 (Feb/21). On this tour you go to Morro Branco , it starts from the beginning of the arts and crafts fair where there are some lace makers, from there you will walk through the Falésias (cliffs) and after that, take a buggy to Praia das Fontes , Praia do Diogo and Lagoa do Uruaú to then pass through the Dunes that will take you to Canoa Quebrada. On the way back to Fortaleza they make a quick stop at a mill.

Canoa Quebrada

One of the most important postcards of Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada , has a lot of restaurants with beach service. You can spend the day there, and enjoy the sea breeza.

You can find tours to stay in Canoa Quebrada for the whole day, or mixed tours that take you to Morro Branco and Praia das Fontes, as we mentioned before. Another option is to stay in a hotel in Canoa Quebrada and enjoy the place calmly.

What to do in Fortaleza (besides going to the beach)

Important! Because of the pandemic some attractions may have a different schedule or can be temporarily closed.

A city tour at the beginning of your trip can help you with an overview of the city, and give really good information about the history of the region, things you wouldn’t be able to get to know by yourself.

Walk through Beira-Mar

Walk through Beira-Mar Avenue , a wide boardwalk that has around 3km of extension, you can opt for doing it during the day or at night. But for your safety, make sure you leave your valuable objects in your accommodation!

Central Market

In front of the Forte de Nossa Senhora de Assunção , it is the Central Market , a place that has an infinity of craft stores, besides typical fruits and nuts of the region.

Ceará Museum

The Ceará Museum has a large collection that tells the history of Ceará. The content of the museum is very objective, which makes the visit enjoyable, it leads us to compare the present moment with past events like slavery, armament, among others.

There, you will find some interesting stories like the one about Ioiô , the popular goat that used to freely walk around the bohemian region of Iracema Beach in mid 1915. Well known to everyone, many people used to offer him alcohol, and because of that, he would get drunk and raise the skirts of the girls. During the 1922 election, the population was dissatisfied with the politicians of Ceará and during the voting (it was still on paper back then), the Goat Ioiô won the election as a city councilor.

Visit Ceará Museum for even more stories. The museum has free admission and is open from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, with the last entry time at 4h40 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm.

Dragão do Mar Center

At Iracema Beach is the Dragão do Mar Center of Art and Culture , a cultural space with a movie theater, an amphitheater, museums, a planetarium and a busy calendar all year around.

Fish Market

At the end of Beira-Mar Avenue is the Fish Market . There you have an option of buying fresh fish to cook at home, or after 11 o’clock you can choose your fish, lobster, shrimp and any seafood in general in one of the many stores and ask them to cook it for you and to deliver it to your table. Besides that, some fishermen often pass by the tables selling oysters. I paid R$ 11 for 6 fresh oysters back in 2018.

This paradise for seafood lovers works daily from 05h30 am to 10 pm. There you will find a kids playground, beachfront tables, and even live music in the late afternoon, which in my opinion, is the best time to go.

Sailboat on the Waterfront of Fortaleza

The sailboat tour in Fortaleza allows you to see the shore from another point of view. It starts from Mucuripe Beach , passes by Meireles Beach and Iracema Beach , and anchors in Jacarecanga’s Beach , at Marina Park Hotel , where the sailboat stops for around 20 minutes. From the sea you can see some touristic monuments like Catedral Metropolitana (Church), Ponte Metálica , Ponte dos Ingleses e o Forte de Nossa Senhora da Assunção .

You can choose between taking the tour in the morning (from 10 am to 12 pm) or in the evening to watch the sunset (from 4 pm to 6 pm).

The tour is organized by the Sailboats Association of Fortaleza, at Beira-Mar Avenue, #4.293 in Mucuripe. Ah, you should book it with a travel agency in advance since there is a high demand and limited spots.

The most famous water park in Brazil, Beach Park , is located in Aquiraz, 26 km from Fortaleza and has a lot of attractions for all ages. There you will find Insano (it means Insane), a 41 meter free fall water slide where you can reach a speed of 105 km/hour and travel through in just 5 seconds. Are you brave enough? Fortal is the best out-of-season Carnival party in northeastern Brazil, it happens normally at the end of July. If you have an interest in this type of event, schedule your trip for the right period, but, if the idea is to be far away from agglomerations, avoid visiting Fortaleza during this period.

Tasting typical food

An experience that we love to have on any trip is to try the typical food of the places we visit. Below there are some of the foods that you should try when visiting Fortaleza:

• Guarana juice with peanuts and chestnuts
• Sun dried meat
• Baião de dois
• Paçoca (sun-fried meat in butter, shredded with onion, flour and manioc)

Things to do in Fortaleza at night

Arts & crafts fair.

Everyday after 5 pm on the boardwalk of Beira-Mar Avenue, around Meireles Beach, happens the open arts & crafts fair, which is an excellent option for purchasing some crafts, nuts and souvenirs.

Forró at Pirata Bar

If you are in town on a Monday night, you should enjoy the best forró at Pirata bar . Located around Iracema Beach, the bar is known as “The Craziest Monday in the World”.

O Ceará Show Theater

This is a super tip for you in case you speak at least a little bit of Portuguese! “ O Ceará Show ” is a very well-designed musical that tells about the history of Ceará in a fun way.

Like the story of Dragão do Mar , a sailor that used to take slaves to large trafficking vessels. Disgusted by this, he organized a rebellion with other sailors to stop this type of activity, and he even went from Ceará to Rio de Janeiro on a jangada to demand the release of the slaves.

The show happens in a theater in Meireles Beach, next to the arts & crafts fair, from Thursday to Saturday at 8 pm and on Sundays at 5 pm.

People from Ceara are popular for being funny. In Fortaleza, there are many humor shows around the city that happen daily.

One option is the Theater of Humor and Culture of Ceará , which has a relaxed atmosphere, and tables for you to enjoy delicious pizza while watching a stand-up show.

Attention, you need to make a reservation in advance.

Thursdays in Fortaleza are considered the “crab day”, so you can choose one of the restaurants at Futuro Beach to enjoy the evening. The most traditional one is Chico do Caranguejo , which offers live music and humor shows besides the traditional crab.

If you like craft beers, Brazilian Food and live music, the Cervejaria Turatti is a good choice and is located at Meireles Beach.

Zoi – Colosso Fortaleza

Trendy bar located on Beira-Mar Avenue, with a famous crab “coxinha”. As it is very popular, there is usually a waiting line to get in at Boteco Praia .

Considered one of the best restaurants in Brazil, CocoBambu is super traditional in the northeastern part of the country, only in Fortaleza there are 3 restaurants.

50 Sabores (50 flavors) is a traditional Ice Cream parlor in Fortaleza. The franchise can be found in different corners of the city, it offers very well served portions and an incredible variety of flavors.

Sustainable Tourism in Fortaleza

As in any other destination, we shall practice more sustainable tourism in Fortaleza too. Find some tips below:

• Avoid generating trash during the trip ;
• Carry a reusable water bottle, straw and cup with you – unfortunately the usage of disposable plastics is very common in the region;
• Remember to order a caipirinha without a straw, otherwise they will already bring the plastic straw in it;
• Use biodegradable sunscreen and repellent, preferably;
• Do not go on donkey rides;
• Leave the shells, rocks and other things on the beaches. Take with you only good memories =)

Fortaleza is one of the most popular beach destinations in Brazil. The country’s fifth-largest city and capital of the state of Ceará has more than 13 miles (20 kilometers) of white-sand coastline. With surfing, Jet skiing, beach clubs and children’s playgrounds, Fortaleza offers plenty of reasons to spend long days by the sea. The beach isn’t Fortaleza’s only attraction this lively city offers nightlife, museums and theaters.

Beach lovers have much to choose from. Praia do Futurois a 4.5-mile (7-kilometer) stretch popular with swimmers and surfers. Try sand skiing down the dunes of Iguape Beach. Iracema Beach is a wide strip with the city’s largest concentration of beach bars and restaurants.

Behind the coastline is a city center of high-rise office blocks, apartments and shopping malls. Search for the remaining traces of Fortaleza’s early history. Visit the 17th-century Portuguese Forte de Nossa Senhora da Assunção after which the city took its name. Stop at the Museu do Ceará to inspect some of the thousands of artifacts that shed light on the area's history and anthropology.

Fortaleza’s nightlife is easy to find, either in the downtown area or along the beaches. Reserve seats for a play or concert at the Theatro José de Alencar. Sip on a designer cocktail at one of the open-air bars at Dragão do Mar cultural center in the Praia de Iracema area. Linger for dancing in one of the nightclubs or head back to the beach at Praia du Futuro to listen to late-night live music.

Fortaleza’s cultural and coastal attractions can be enjoyed year-round. The state of Ceará is a few degrees south of the equator and is almost always hot. To get to Fortaleza, fly into Aeroporto Internacional Pinto Martins, 4 miles (6 kilometers) south of the downtown area. Fortaleza can also be reached by bus and car from other major Brazilian cities but the distances are long. Rio de Janeiro is 1,615 miles (2,600 kilometers) south of the city.

Nice city. Enjoyed our stay. Many restaurants along the beach. If you eat alongside the ocean, just know that people constantly walk but trying to sell you stuff and ask for money.

Some beautiful areas (especially beaches), including some that are definitely up and coming. Others were rough and scary. Hopefully crime continues to drop and Fortaleza enjoys a wonderful future moving forward!

I absolutely love this place -- a home away from home for me! The climate, the food, and especially the people are top-notch -- friendly, down-to-earth. Learn a little Portuguese before you visit and you'll make all kinds of new friends!

Fortaleza is beautiful .. just be careful with the hotel you might stay

Fortaleza is an amazing city. The people are warm and friendly and the culture offers something for everyone. If vacation or pleasure is your motive, you can't go wrong!
