Glenkinchie Distillery

Share "glenkinchie distillery", description.

Popularly referred to as the ‘Home of Edinburgh Malt,’ the Glenkinchie Distillery is situated in East Lothian and was brought to life in 1837.

The Glenkinchie Distillery is surrounded by much history owing to the history surrounding its location and the exploits of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745 after he became one of the most powerful leaders of his time.

Illegal distilleries flooded this place at a time until smaller distilleries were forced to get their license.  As at when Glenkinchie was launched, there were more than 170 distilleries run with a licence in the Scottish lowlands although their products then would be rejected by whisky lovers today.

Getting there

If you’re coming by road, remember the postcode is EH34 5ET. When you get to Edinburgh city bypass at A870, follow the Millerhill exit to A86 in Jedburgh. Follow left via A6093 on Haddington till you get to Pencaitland. From here you can follow the signs to the distillery.

If you’re using a shuttle bus, this is often a prepaid service as you pay alongside your distillery entrance ticket. The shuttle runs from Edinburgh city centre to the distillery. It is advisable as always to be around before the bus departs so as to secure your place with the driver. Interested persons should call this number: 01875 342 012 for more information.

The Prestonpans railway station halts at Tranent and you can alight and follow B6355 straight to Pencaitland.

A flight from Edinburgh and straight to Berwick-upon-Tweed. From here to the Sheriffhall roundabout is just 9 miles and from the roundabout head for Millerhall junction. From here follow the A68 route along Jedburgh. Travel 3.5 miles until A6093 on Haddington. From here you get to Pencaitland and follows signs to the distillery.

Public transportation takes just one hour from Edinburgh city centre to Pencaitland. From Pencaitland, it’s just a 40-minute walk uphill to the distillery. If you want to use a taxi, call Shirley at Glen Hire on this numbers 07437896908
