Grand Canyon Railway

See Schedule & Rates »

The Grand Canyon Railway is a true blast from the past. It takes passengers not just from Williams to the Grand Canyon Village, but from cars and modern times to spectacular views and remnants of Southwest’s intricate history. Stretching 65 miles long and created in 1901, the Grand Canyon Railway has been used by many influential people including Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, William Howard Taft, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Clark Gable, Jimmy Durante, Doris Day, Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates.

Grand Canyon Railway

Teddy Roosevelt even stated that the Grand Canyon Railway was a sight that, “...every American should see.” The ride is 2 hours and 15 minutes each way and the first train leaves Williams at 9:30 am to take its passengers to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Throughout your day trip to the Canyon, you will be experiencing different climates and we recommend bringing layers. If you happen to be around for the holidays don’t forget to check out some of the railway’s themed events including the Polar Express and the Pumpkin Patch ride. When on the train and exploring the South Rim of the Grand Canyon be sure to look out for wildlife. These include animals such as elk, mule deer, squirrels, bald eagles, California condors and many more. This trip is not only a fun ride, but it leads you to one of the most incredible sights to be seen: the Grand Canyon.

VISITOR INFORMATION: GRAND CANYON RAILWAYS

Train Rates per Class:

  • The Pullman Car - Adults: $65.00 | Children $29.00
  • Coach Class - Adults: $79.00 | Children: $47.00
  • First Class - Adults: $152.00 | Children: $118.00
  • Luxury Dome Class - Adults: $219.00
  • Luxury Parlor Class - Adults: $219.00

Winter conditions on the South Rim tend to be rather extreme. Be prepared for snow, icy roads, icy trails, and road closures. Roads on the South Rim are plowed when needed and canyon views can be difficult when there are storms or high levels of fog. The North Rim can get heavy snowfall during the winter months. The road into the North Rim (Highway 67) is closed from the first heavy snow in November or early December to mid-May. (Entrance fees are not refundable due to weather conditions)

Spring and fall weather in the Grand Canyon is unpredictable. Please prepare yourself for sudden changes in the weather at those times of the year. May and October can be some of the driest months, although snowstorms may occur, while late April and May can be windy. Spring and fall sport mild temperatures with warm days and cooler nights, and can be the best times to be hiking in the canyon.

Train Times

  • Leaves Williams at 9:30 am and arrives at Grand Canyon Village at 11:45 am.
  • Leaves Grand Canyon Village at 3:30pm and arrives at Williams at 5:45pm.

Grand Canyon Railway Trains to and from Williams

If it's adventure, sightseeing and history all rolled into one that you want on your grand canyon vacation, then grand canyon railway is your answer..

A Grand Canyon Railway trip is a nostalgic journey to the country’s most famous natural wonder. Before there were paved roads and automobile access to Grand Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon Railway made its first paid passenger journey to the South Rim in 1901. At the time, the 61-mile-long journey reportedly had a price tag of $3.95.

It was the Santa Fe Railroad, along with the Fred Harvey Company, that commissioned and built most of the historic structures that still exist along the South Rim. The branch line from Williams, AZ to the South Rim, was completed to provide access to the canyon. Operation of the railway as a passenger train failed in 1968 thanks to competition with automobiles, but continued operation as a freight train until 1974.

In 1988, the line was bought by a Phoenix, Arizona, couple, Max and Thelma Biegert. The railway was restored and in 1989 began operations as a separate company, independent of the Santa Fe. The first run of the restored railroad was on September 17, 1989, commemorating the September 17 debut of the original railroad.

Today, the railroad carries hundreds of passengers to and from the Canyon every day, totaling about 240,000 passengers a year. Notable passengers in the railway’s earlier days included Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Clark Gable, Doris Day, and others. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are among passengers who have enjoyed the railway in recent times.

The Grand Canyon Railway snakes itself through a forest south of the canyon.

The restored former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Station serves as the base of Grand Canyon Railway’s Williams operations and houses the ticket counter along with a coffee and fudge shop. The Grand Canyon Depot, located inside the national park, remains the northern terminus for passengers of the line and is the oldest operating log train depot in the nation. Both depots are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Riders are immersed in history and culture as they travel to the Grand Canyon in restored 1920s vintage Harriman coaches and 1950s climate-controlled coaches. Back in the day, President Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir paid $3.95 to ride on the rails. Today, the Old West lives on daily with authentic characters staging a train robbery and musicians leading cowboy sing-alongs. Some of the masked cowboys play really accomplished people in real life like Dennis Shirley who was Ray Charles’ head photographer back in the day. The adventure begins with a Wild West shootout in the corral located next to the Depot before their train departs.

“Grand Canyon Railway comfortably takes guests on a scenic journey to the Historic Village at Grand Canyon South Rim. During the ride, passengers take in classic Arizona landscapes while learning about the Grand Canyon’s dynamic history. And now you can enhance this already memorable experience by chartering your own private train to the Grand Canyon.” Says Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel’s VIP sales and community relations manager, Sam Langer.

These Rail Baron Charters are the perfect experience for weddings, reunions, retirement parties and more. You get to choose your car and locomotive to bring you and your guests from Williams, Ariz., to the Grand Canyon.

Or, turn your train ride into a vacation with a package including lodging at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel .

Trains Powered on Vegetable Oil

What do French fries and the Grand Canyon Railway have in common?

Vegetable oil used to fry the popular side dish literally helps fuel the railway’s Locomotive  No. 4960, also known as the French Fry Express. Collected from restaurants in the Grand Canyon, Phoenix and Williams, Ariz., where the 65-mile train ride to the Grand Canyon starts, the recycled oil emits 50 percent less carbon emissions than diesel fuel. These special excursions are scheduled the first Saturday of each month, March through October. In addition, passengers who take the train to and from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim help reduce vehicle pollution and traffic by an estimated 70,000 cars per year.

The 4960 steam engine on the Grand Canyon Railway is dubbed the French Fry Express because it runs on recycled vegetable oil.

Polar Express

During the winter season (November-January), the line runs The Polar Express from Williams to the ‘North Pole, ‘ a station about 10 miles (20 km) north of town.

Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon you may participate in a narrated motor coach rim tour to the most scenic overlooks of the canyon to enhance your visit. Guests are escorted to vistas like Mojave Point, Pima Point, The Abyss and Hermits Rest. Steam Saturdays

Our steam locomotives are scheduled to pull the train on the first saturday of the month march-october.

The Grand Canyon Railway celebrates the history of rail travel with several steam-powered excursions to Grand Canyon National Park each year. An operational steam locomotive can be a rare sight in the 21st Century, which is why we keep two fully-restored vintage steam locomotives in service to pull The Train on select dates throughout the year. Check the calendar to see which dates will feature either GCR No. 29 or GCR No. 4960 out in front of The Train.

Steam Saturdays may be cancelled at any time, including the planned day of departure, due to weather, mechanical, or other issues.

Note: During Steam Saturdays, only the 9:30 AM train will be a steam engine.

Meet Our Steam Locomotives

Image

Steam locomotive No. 29 was built in 1906 by the American Locomotive Company in Lima, Ohio to haul iron ore trains on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Retired from the LS&I RR in 1960, it was sold to the scenic Marquette & Huron Mountain Railroad but was never used. Grand Canyon Railway purchased No. 29 when the line was reborn in 1989 and it entered service on the Grand Canyon line in 1990, operating until 1995. No. 29 saw service again from 2004 to 2008 after a complete overhaul. From 2008 to 2016, it enjoyed a semi-retirement as a static display locomotive, first greeting our passengers arriving to the platform in Williams, later on display in front of the historic Grand Canyon Depot at the South Rim.

In 2016, Grand Canyon Railway undertook the major project of bringing No. 29 back to life to help celebrate the National Park Service’s Centennial Anniversary, and it returned to the rails for the first time in 8 years on August 24, 2016 pulling the round-trip train to and from Grand Canyon National Park. Later that week, No. 29 paired up with sister locomotive No. 4960 for the first steam double-header to Grand Canyon since 2012.

Steam Locomotive No. 4960 was built in 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and saw service on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad hauling iron ore and other freight throughout the American Mid-West. Retired from CB&Q RR in 1960, it pulled excursion trains, museum trains, and circus trains throughout Wisconsin and other mid-western States until the early 1970’s when it was put on static display. Purchased by Grand Canyon Railway in 1989, in 1996 No. 4960 underwent one of the most extensive locomotive rebuilding and restoration projects in modern history, converting it from a coal-burner to burn diesel as fuel. Further modifications were made to it in 2009, as GCR converted it to run on recycled Waste Vegetable Oil. Since 2009, No. 4960 has served as the backbone of our steam fleet, powering all of our steam excursions and round-trip trains to Grand Canyon. Due to its popularity, No. 4960 has taken its place as an icon among operational steam locomotives in the United States.

Awards and Recognition

Iso environmental certification.

The Grand Canyon Railway recently became the first tourist railway in the United States to receive ISO 14001 third-party certification of its environmental management system (EMS) after a two-year process involving complete review, development and implementation of environmental initiatives in all of its operations.

2017 ARIZONA GOVERNOR’S AWARD WINNERS!

Grand Canyon Railway was the recipient of the 2017 Arizona Governor’s Award for Outstanding Historical and Cultural Preservation, honoring our 2016 project to restore historic steam locomotive No. 29. This award is presented annually to the individual, organization, or community that has made the most significant contribution toward the cultural and/or historic preservation of some aspect of the natural, cultural, or aesthetic legacy of Arizona to inspire domestic or international visitation to the state. Locomotives like No. 29 pulled the trains that brought the first travelers en masse to Arizona and our jewel in the National Park crown – Grand Canyon. By operating our two steam locomotives, we give today’s rail passengers a glimpse into the rich history of Arizona tourism. Thank you to the Arizona Office of Tourism for your recognition of our efforts!

While the Strip is certainly one of Las Vegas' most famous features, it's not all the city has to offer. A trip to Las Vegas wouldn't be complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring natural wonders just outside of it, such as the Grand Canyon. Tourists and locals alike will enjoy a break from the bright lights and bustling city on a bus tour to the Grand Canyon. As one of the largest natural canyons on Earth, the Grand Canyon is more than 270 miles long, meaning there are multiple destinations to explore; the most popular are the South and West Rims.

We've rounded up the top options for Grand Canyon bus tours from Las Vegas, whether you seek an adventurous ride or a more tranquil sightseeing experience.

Best Overall: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus/Helicopter & Landing Tour with Optional Skywalk

Tour operator: Canyon Tours Price: From $358 per person Duration: About 10 hours

Visitors can experience the ultimate Grand Canyon bus tour paired with an unforgettable helicopter ride down to the floor of the canyon. The adventure begins on an air-conditioned tour bus that departs from the Vegas Strip and carries passengers to the West Rim. From there, passengers will board a helicopter that descends 4,000 feet, landing on the floor of the canyon. Visitors can explore the canyon floor before reboarding the motorcoach and continuing onto Grand Canyon West, which is home to Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch. You'll also have the option to brave the world-famous glass Skywalk for sweeping views (and an additional fee).

Local tip: Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribal Nation. In the tribe's traditions, the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River are considered living, spiritual entities. When visiting Grand Canyon West, travelers are immersed in the rich culture and history of the Hualapai Nation.

Best West Rim Tour: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus Tour with Lunch, Hoover Dam Stop and Skywalk

Aerial of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.

Tour operator: Grand Canyon Destinations Price: From $99 per person Duration: About 11 hours

Located in Peach Springs, Arizona, the West Rim is only a few hours from Las Vegas. This tour will show you the best that the West Rim has to offer, including the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk bridge (for an added fee). After being picked up from select Vegas hotels and traveling three hours on an air-conditioned bus, passengers get to spend up to four hours exploring the West Rim. A must-see lookout point at the West Rim is Guano Point, from which you can hike to Highpoint Hike and get a view of the Colorado River.

A lunch box, snacks and plenty of water are included with the tour. One unique feature of this outing is that you get to stop at the Hoover Dam for a photo during the bus journey (but keep in mind this stop is available seasonally). You can also choose from several upgrades, including a Skywalk admission ticket, a helicopter ride or a boat excursion.

Local tip: Because it's closer to the Las Vegas desert, this side of the Grand Canyon is the warmest year-round, with hot and dry summers, mild shoulder seasons, and occasional snowfall in the winter.

Best Budget: Grand Canyon South Rim Bus Tour from Las Vegas

The Grand Canyon Village Observation Tower at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Tour operator: Grand Canyon Destinations Price: From $84 per person Duration: About 15 to 16 hours

A South Rim bus tour offers a quieter, more historic sightseeing experience. The South Rim is one of the most popular parts of Grand Canyon National Park . Guests can see the wide variety of flora and fauna native to the area. This bus tour – which takes around four hours to get to the South Rim's Mather Point from Vegas – gives visitors the opportunity to walk along Bright Angel Trail; it leads to Bright Angel Lodge, located in the Village Historic District.

You can also stock up on snacks and souvenirs at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, since the tour only includes a box lunch and water. Or, upgrade your excursion with the guided walking tour add-on. Another historic part of the tour is the scenic drive along the famous Route 66, one of the first U.S. highways.

Local tip: Located farther from Vegas, the South Rim is cooler, with rainy and snowy winters, and more moderate temperatures in spring, summer and fall.

Local tip: Visitors who are looking to experience the wildlife native to the area often choose the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is home to more animal species than the West Rim, such as coyotes and bighorn sheep.

Best All-Inclusive: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus Tour & Hoover Dam Photo Stop with Optional Skywalk

A couple from a Comedy on Deck Tours Grand Canyon bus tour posing for a picture while sitting on a large rock at the Grand Canyon.

This full-day Grand Canyon tour run by Comedy on Deck Tours gives guests several options to customize their experience, such as a VIP Skywalk tour. But there is also a great base package. Guests are treated to not one but two sit-down meals from local restaurants: a freshly prepared breakfast and a barbecue lunch with an incredible view of the canyon. Additionally, this all-inclusive tour also stops at the Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon, so guests get to experience two national landmarks for the price of one. The professional comedian who doubles as tour guide makes for an even more fun experience.

Local tip: The West Rim is typically less crowded than the South Rim, so it may be a good option for your Grand Canyon destination if you're hoping to avoid all the tourist congestion.

Best for Families: Grand Canyon South Rim Bus Tour

A couple with a young child sitting on a rock and looking out at the Grand Canyon.

Although there are plenty of kid-approved activities in Las Vegas itself, a day trip to the Grand Canyon is a must-see for any family vacation. This South Rim bus tour from Canyon Tours offers a full day of activities that kids of all ages will enjoy.

Not only will youngsters marvel at the beauty of the canyon, but they can also have an interactive experience at the IMAX theater, which plays a film that takes you into the center of the canyon. Visitor centers throughout the park also offer free activities that allow children 4 and older to earn an official Junior Ranger badge and learn about nature, history and park preservation.

Local tip: The South Rim is divided into different viewpoint areas that visitors can explore. One of the most popular viewpoints is Hermit Road, which is ideal for families with children.
