10+ Great Iowa Road Trips For Summer

I’m always up for a weekend getaway, and Iowa has become my reliable, go-to state. Iowa cities provide an inexpensive vacation, and all within just a few hours from Omaha. Here are a few of my favorite, memorable vacations in Iowa, plus recommendations from Iowa travel bloggers.

Disclosure: This post originally was published on Oh My! Omaha and a portion is republished here with permission.

Table of Contents

1. Adventure in Audubon

Audubon offers great outdoor spots like the T-Bone Bike Trail, which is a paved bike trail that spans from Audubon south through Hamlin, Exira, and under I-80 into Cass County. Littlefield Recreational Area outside Exira offers camping, fishing, swimming at a beach, and more.

Albert The Bull in Audubon

Nearby you’ll find the “tree in the middle of the road” unique site as well. Downtown you’ll find the John James Audubon bird walk and a beautiful city park.

Restaurants like El Adobe and The Bakery on Broadway will fill up your tummy with delicious foods. Want to try a prize-winning tenderloin? Head to Darrel’s Place in Hamlin!

Nearby in Gray, you’ll find the Heritage Rose Garden, which features more than 200 varieties of roses and flowers. If you need something to do indoors, head to the Audubon Rec Center.

Enjoy a stay at the historic Taylor Hill Lodge. This century-old barn has been renovated into a lodge and it’s a great place to stay and enjoy Iowa countryside!

There is plenty to keep you and your family busy in Audubon County.

2. Life’s a beach in Clear Lake

Clear Lake is the perfect place to plan a summer getaway! Families will enjoy visiting City Beach where you can take a dip in Clear Lake or have fun in the new splash pad area. We recommend grabbing a sandwich at nearby Starboard Market and having a picnic during your day at the beach.

A carnival in Clear Lake, Iowa

Nature lovers will enjoy exploring Clear Lake by taking a tour on the Lady of the Lake, or by going on a walk at Central Gardens or either state park (Clear Lake or McIntosh).

History buffs will enjoy visiting the Surf Ballroom or the Cerro Gordo County Freedom Rock to learn about important stories and people that made an impact both locally and nationwide.

There is something for everyone in Clear Lake and don’t forget to get a black raspberry ice cream cone at the Viking Drive-Inn while you visit!

Read on about the Iowa Ice Cream Road Tri p’s stop at Viking Drive-Inn in Clear Lake.

3. Enjoy the great outdoors in Decorah

Decorah is a small town full of outdoor adventures in northeastern Iowa. Located in the Driftless Area of the Midwest, the landscape is surprising in areas: Waterfall, rocky terrain, and Upper Iowa River, which National Geographic listed as one of the 100 Greatest Adventures in America.

On our visit, we stuck to paved path of Trout Run Trail for a bike ride, but the area is also popular with mountain bikers.

Beers at Pulpit Rock Brewing Co. in Decorah

My favorite meal was at Luna Valley Farm, which serves wood-fired pizza made from ingredients grown and raised by them. Don’t forget to cap off your day with a beer from one of the local microbreweries!

4. A weekend of fun in Des Moines

You can easily spend a weekend in Des Moines , the state capital of Iowa, and not see all the highlights. From cultural experiences like the Science Center of Iowa and the Living History Farms to big thrills at Adventureland, the city has enough to keep any family busy.

The Des Moines farmers market

Des Moines has a great restaurant scene . Among my favorites that I return to again and again are Fong’s Pizza and Zombie Burger. In the summer, don’t miss the massive farms market in downtown Des Moines!

5. Active outdoors in Dubuque

A great place for an Iowa summer getaway is Dubuque ! There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Some summertime options include Ziplining at Sky Tours Dubuque, hiking at the Mines of Spain, and enjoying the Mississippi River. Several boat companies offer river cruises, but if you have your own boat there are lots of sandbars that you can enjoy. The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and the Fenelon Place Elevator are worth a stop too.

The Mines of Spain in Dubuque, Iowa

The Yardarm has outside riverfront dining which is lovely on a warm day. Along Rhomberg Avenue you’ll find an independently-owned Dairy Queen, the menu is slightly different from the regular locations and it’s walk-up, like a human drive-thru!

The Hotel Julien and the Grand Harbor Resort are popular Downtown lodging options. However, if you are into camping, you’ll find a couple of campgrounds. Miller Riverview Park is very close to Downtown located on Schmitt Island, or just across the river in Wisconsin (a 10-minute drive), is the large Coconut Cove Resort, which is great for families.

6. Danish treasures in Elk Horn

Elk Horn is the “capital” of the Danish Villages. Learn about Dutch culture and history by visiting this small town.

The Danish Windmill Museum in Elk Horn

The Museum of Danish America & the Danish Windmill Museum are great places to learn about the connection of Elk Horn to Danish culture along with the impact on our society. If you’re a wine fan, we recommend heading outside Elk Horn to Danish Countryside Winery.

Make sure to check out the other Danish Village of Kimballton. This town is home to the Hans Christian Anderson Little Mermaid sculpture park and fountain.

Get a taste for traditional Danish food like  frikadellar  and  Abelskiver  at the Danish Table. Award-winning tenderloins are available at Larsen’s Pub or grab delicious pizza at Grace on Main!

Looking for a place to stay? We recommend Blue Grass Inn & Suites in Audubon.

7. The hidden gem, Estherville

Estherville is most likely one of the most overlooked towns in Iowa. It is nestled along the Des Moines River and Fort Defiance State Park.

The state park has several beautiful hiking trails that challenge hikers, as well as the casual walker. The Des Moines River Water Trail provides more than 20 miles to explore by kayak, boat, or canoe. The outdoor enthusiast will fall in love with this area of the state.

great iowa road trip 2023

Book an overnight stay at Little Swan Lake Winery/Bed & Breakfast . Here you can enjoy the rolling hills of Iowa, with a jaw-dropping view off of your deck.

Your visit would not be complete without a meal at Woody’s Pizza, as it is one of the most recognizable restaurants in the state of Iowa.

A stroll around the town square will remind you how peaceful and beautiful life is in small-town America.

8. Get away from it all at Lake Icaria

Remote Lake Icaria is a peaceful summer destination for those who want to get away from crowds and noise. Reserve a cabin and enjoy the views. (Or camp, it’s your call)

The path to a sandy beach at Lake Icaria

The lake draws fishing enthusiasts, boaters, and families who like the small beach. On the weekends seasonally, you may find a food truck parked near the beach.

The closest town to Lake Icaria is Corning, which has a few restaurants and there’s a winery outside of town.

9. Frank Lloyd Wright & Mason City

Right in the heart of north Iowa with easy access via US-20 or I-35, Mason City is an ideal summer getaway for families, with music, architecture, art, food, and plenty of greenery.

For fun, stroll or bike the Meredith Wilson footbridge and visit Music Man Square to learn more about the musical Music Man, River City, and how Mason City inspired it all. At the Charles H. MacNider Museum, find the adorable puppets from the Lonely Goatherd scene in Sound of Music, as well as works in a variety of mediums from many different artists, including paintings by Thomas Hart Benton.

Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Historic Park Inn in Mason City

Architecture aficionados will love the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Historic Park Inn and Stockman House, and will notice tributes to his style all over town, from century-old leaded glass to contemporary murals and more!

If all this fun makes you hungry, Northwestern Steakhouse and Black Dog BBQ will make sure you don’t stay that way, while Birdsall’s ice cream and Mama Sugar’s Cupcakery will be the icing on your delicious trip!

Want more info? Here’s the full take on visiting Mason City with kids .

10. There’s always Okoboji

Okoboji , and the collection of nearby towns and lakes, are one of the most popular summer destinations in the state. Whatever kind of lake vacation you wish for – quiet, active, or a party – you’ll find it in Okoboji.

Arnolds Park Amusement Park rides

Boaters flock here, but since we don’t own a boat, we cruised the lake with a canoe from our resort.

Make time to visit the historic Arnolds Park Amuseument Park, home to one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in the U.S. Grab a cold treat at the Nutty Bar Stand after your afternoon at the amusement park.

If you can pull yourself away from the lakes, you’ll find museums, bike trails, and a fun nature center in the area.

11. Beyond the tulips in Orange City

If you see small windmills and vibrant tulips, there’s a good chance you’ve arrived in Orange City . This charming little town has Dutch bakeries and shops that celebrate its very Dutch heritage.

A park in Orange City, Iowa

You can visit any time, but early spring is a good time to go to see the tulips. We went during the town’s annual Tulip Festival and enjoyed the truly unique parades, artisans, and shows.

In the summer, the tulips are replaced by more seasonal displays.

12. Crossing state lines for the Quad Cities

The Quad Cities – Betterndorf and Davenport in Iowa and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois – feel like one large city with small-town atmospheres. The Mississippi is the natural divider for the states and cities.

We visited on a particularly rainy weekend, so we spent most of our time indoors. There are several excellent museums, including the Putnam Museum (a science center crossed with natural history museum), Figge Art Museum, and the Familly Museum.

The Fyxell Geology Museum in the Quad Cities

There are two free, not-to-miss places to include on your visit. The Fyxell Geology Museum located on the picturesque Augustana College campus, and is home to fossils and rocks and petrified dinosaur poop. (Kids love it)

The John Deere Pavilion is also a free attraction, with hands-on activities and an up-close look at farming equipment.

It’s tough to say which city you should stay overnight in. But, they’re all near each other so you can’t really choose incorrectly.

13. It’s sweet in Sioux City

Indoors and outdoors, Sioux CIty has plenty of activity options to fill a weekend.

Stone State Park and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in the city are two great places to hike. The trails at the nature center connect to the rest of Stone Park if you’re looking for a longer hike. The nature center is a must-visit if you have young kids.

The nature playscape at Dorothy Picaut Nature Center in Sioux City

Sioux City has a surprising number of museums for a city of its size. Some that I especially recommend to visitors include the Sioux City Art Center (the Grant Wood corn room is a must-see!), LaunchPAD Children’s Museum for little visitors, and the Sioux City Railroad Museum with its brand new grand-scale railroad now open for rides.

6 Sensationally Scenic Drives in Iowa

' src=

A lot of people may associate Iowa with cornfields, but you might be surprised by the diversity in the landscape you can experience on the best scenic drives in Iowa!

From prairies to forests, Iowa has an abundance of natural wonders just waiting to be discovered. The state also has a lot of interesting historical sites, which are cool places to stop to learn about early pioneers and settlers who made their home here during the time of western expansion in the United States.

Whether your road trip in Iowa is part of a longer drive across the United States or if you’re looking for a unique way to experience the state, Iowa’s scenic byways are a perfect way to view the best places this central Midwest state has to offer.

1. Iowa Scenic Drives: Loess Hills National Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 220 miles
  • Time Needed: 5 hours to 1 day

The landscape of Loess Hills is comprised of prairies, bluffs, and rolling hills, making it one of the most scenic places to drive in Iowa.

Along the way, there are lots of historic sites and parks to visit. You can check out places like the Historic General Dodge House , the impressive mansion of a former Civil War general.

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Loess Hills

Lewis and Clark Monument is another great place to include on this byway in Iowa. This overlook has an impressive view toward the west and marks one of the stopping points of Lewis and Clark, the famous travelers who charted the territory west of the Mississippi. Not only is the overlook a good place to stop for photographs, but there’s also a picnic area where you can enjoy a lunch break on this Iowa drive.

In addition to the 220 miles of the official route, there are 185 miles of excursion loops to appreciate the Iowa scenery. Many of these are gravel routes that offer a way to explore some of the wilderness and feel like you’re really escaping civilization for a while.

When to go: Spring through fall are the best times of year to appreciate the landscape and avoid winter driving conditions, especially if you plan on taking some of the gravel roads.

2. Iowa Scenic Drives: Western Skies Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 142 miles
  • Time Needed: 3-6 hours

If you’re already planning on traveling Interstate 80 , then the Western Skies Scenic Byway is a great drive in Iowa to take. This route may be a bit longer than the direct 1-80 route, but the peaceful scenery makes it well worth the time.

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Elk Horn

This Iowa scenic drive gets its name from the prairie landscape and open skies. There are also a number of historic locations along the route, including the Harrison County Historical Village , where the drive begins.

Elk Horn and Kimballtown are also great places to stop, both of which began as early Danish settlements and still preserve a lot of their historic charm. Check out some of the local artisan shops in these towns, or pick up a treat at one of the bakeries.

Outdoor enthusiasts will like the variety of activities that can be added to this scenic drive in Iowa. Whiterock Conservancy is a great place to go hiking or even spend a few nights camping in the region known for having the darkest sky and the best star-gazing opportunities in Iowa.

When to go: Spring through fall is typically best, but it’s also possible to drive this route in winter.

3. Iowa Scenic Drives: Covered Bridges Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 82 miles
  • Time Needed: 2-4 hours

You might guess by the name of this Iowa byway that what makes this particular route unique are the numerous covered bridges along the way. The movie and musical The Bridges of Madison County was actually filmed here, something which some of the towns still take pride in.

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Madison County

Make sure you stop in Winterset, a town near the center of Madison County, which is known for its historic limestone courthouse and has received a National Historic District designation. There are also plenty of local shops and fun restaurants around the town square.

You’ll already have lots of opportunities to see the peaceful landscape along this scenic drive in Iowa, but if you’re interested in a more immersive nature experience, you’ll want to stop at the Madison County Historic Complex .

Add an afternoon of kayaking to your trip, or check out some of the hiking trails to stretch your legs. You’ll also get great views of the North River and Middle River Valleys.

When to go: Spring through fall has the best views, especially if you want to walk around and explore.

4. Iowa Scenic Drives: River Bluffs Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 109 miles
  • Time Needed: 2 hours to 1 day (or more)

It won’t take much to convince you that this is one of the best scenic byways in Iowa, thanks to the incredible landscape formed by three rivers: Turkey, the Volga, and the Mississippi.

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Mississippi River

From your vehicle, you’ll get stunning views of the bluffs for which the route gets its name, as well as peaceful forests and rolling hills. Thirteen small towns dot the route, many of which have a unique historical atmosphere. Thanks to the quaint shops and friendly vibe, this area is sometimes called Iowa’s “Little Switzerland.”

No road trip in Iowa would be complete without adding on at least a few outdoor activities, and you’ll find plenty of options on this route. There are parks with hiking trails, unique caves formed by the erosion of the rivers, and water access points for fishing and kayaking.

When to go: Summer is best for outdoor activities, but spring and fall are also excellent for views of the flowers and autumn colors.

5. Iowa Scenic Drives: Driftless Area Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 144 miles
  • Time Needed: 3 hours to 1 day

Sometimes considered the most scenic drive in Iowa, you’ll understand how this route got its name once you start to pass through the untouched natural beauty of limestone bluffs and rivers meandering through forests. In the midst of the peaceful nature, relax and let yourself drift away through Iowa’s scenery!

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Upper Iowa River

Not only is this Iowa drive stunning, but it also holds endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, like hiking in the state parks or fishing and boating on the Mississippi, Yellow , or Upper Iowa Rivers.

Along with the natural beauty, you’ll also encounter interesting historic landmarks like stone churches and bridges which date back to the time of the pioneers who first settled in the area. Stop for lunch at a local diner at one of the little towns along the way, or pick up a souvenir at a small boutique.

When to go: This is one of the best drives in Iowa in the fall since the entire route is covered with colorful deciduous trees. Spring and summer are also good for outdoor scenery and activities.

6. Scenic Drives in Iowa: Iowa Valley Scenic Byway

  • Distance: 77 miles
  • Time needed: 2-5 hours

The Iowa Valley Scenic Byway offers a great combination of history and natural beauty. On the western end of the route, you’ll find the Meskwaki Settlement, which is the state’s only official resident Native American community. Visit the Meskwaki Cultural Center & Museum to learn about the history and significance of the region as well as view stunning artifacts of beadwork and weaving.

USA Scenic Drives in Iowa - Lily Lake

You’ll find no shortage of quirky and unique stops on your Iowa road trip along this route. Check out Traer’s Salt and Pepper Shaker Gallery or Gladbrook’s Matchstick Marvels Museum for something you won’t get to see on other drives!

In addition to the small-town charms, there are also plenty of places to get out and explore the landscape around the Iowa River Valley. Favorite activities include fishing, hiking, and bird watching.

You’ll already get plenty of lookouts over the bluffs, but if you want an even better perspective of the Iowa scenery, you can make a pit stop close to Chelsea, where there’s a lookout platform built in the shape of an eagle which is a perfect place for photographs.

If you’re driving this scenic route in Iowa during July, then a stop at Lily Lake in Amana is a must. Each year in summer, this lake is known for the thousands of water lilies that cover the surface in a beautiful array of gold and white!

When to go: Spring is a good time to appreciate the early wildflowers, while summer is best for outdoor activities. During fall, the river valley will be covered in autumn colors.

13 stops along the Great River Road from Illinois to Iowa

Travel across the Mississippi River and through time at these historic homes, Native sites, and scenic nature preserves

By Amy Bizzarri

The 3,000-mile-long Great River Road travels along the winding Mississippi River through 10 states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, the spectacular scenery ranges from lush grassy meadows and wetlands to vibrant metropolises and tiny riverfront towns.

One of the most scenic stretches of the Great River Road runs along Illinois’ western border, passing through an area known as the Driftless Area Region because it remained untouched by the glaciers that flattened most of the Midwest. Towering bluffs offer sweeping views of the riverscape and rolling hills reveal historic sites, including Native American mounds, a stone tower that once concealed bullets bound for the Civil War, and a crystal-filled underground cavern.

The small town of Galena harnessed the river’s transport power and became a bustling commercial hub in the 19th century. Across the river, Dubuque, Iowa, was founded in 1833, 13 years before the state of Iowa. It became an early American manufacturing town, shipping goods via steamboat down and up the mighty Mississippi.

Here are 13 stops along or near the Great River Road in this picturesque corner of northern Illinois and Iowa.

Two women talk and pet a dog on the porch of a quaint, historic building.

1. Council Hill

Imagine your car is a horse and wagon as you ride up to Council Hill Station : In the 1850s, you might have picked up provisions from this general store and railway station before making your way across the Mississippi toward the Wild West. Today, the historic building situated along the east fork of the Galena River is a live music venue beloved for its summer barn dances.

A wide waterfall cascades down into a rocky waterway below.

2. Thunder Bay Falls

Spring-fed Lake Galena is a 225-acre lake enjoyed by anglers because of the abundance of bass, walleye, bluegill, and perch. A spillway at the base of rolling hills near the lake’s southwest corner boasts a hidden gem: Follow the short, designated trail to reach the base of the beautiful Thunder Bay Falls.

The Horseshoe Mound Preserve Council Ring is a central gathering area marked by giant stones that align with the setting sun on the summer and winter solstices

3. Horseshoe Mound Preserve

Hike the 0.9-mile trail that leads through the 220-plus-acre Horseshoe Mound Preserve to the Council Ring, a central gathering area marked by giant stones that align with the setting sun on the summer and winter solstices. From this scenic perch high above the Galena River Valley, it’s easy to spot the Mississippi River on a clear day. More than a thousand years ago, the Meskwaki, Ho-Chunk, Sauk, and Menominee people mined galena, the most important ore of lead and a source of silver, in the mines that once dotted the valley below.

General Ulysses S. Grant's home is an Italianate-style home covered in brick with an American flag out front.

4. Ulysses S. Grant Home

Ulysses S. Grant moved to Galena with his family in 1860 to work at the leather goods store owned by his father. Barely a year later, in the spring of 1861, he left Galena to serve the Union in the Civil War. Four years later, he had risen in the ranks to become the general who accepted the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. On August 18, 1865, Galena celebrated the return of its Civil War hero with a triumphant procession and presented the General with this Italianate-style home on Bouthillier Street. Tours of the home, which looks much as it did when Grant and his family lived here, are offered Wednesday through Sunday.

A large red brick home is flanked with tall marble columns along the two-story entrance.

5. Elihu B. Washburne Home

Elihu B. Washburne, a prominent Galena attorney, and close friend and associate of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant, also served in Congress from 1853 to 1869. Washburne lived in this circa-1843 brick Greek Revival home with his wife, Adele, and seven children. Tours of the house, which include a peek into the library where Grant learned of his election to the U.S. presidency on the evening of November 3, 1868, are offered seasonally.

A wooden sign that reads "Galena's Oldest House" sits in front of a historic looking dwelling

6. Dowling House

Built of native limestone in 1826, the Dowling House is the oldest home in Galena. The home’s first floor was initially used as a trading post while the Dowling family lived upstairs. Thirty-minute tours of the building, which is furnished with period supplies and furnishings, primitives, and a collection of Galena pottery, are offered from May to November.

7. Old Blacksmith Shop

Before the advent of industrialization, people relied on blacksmiths to provide them with tools (nails, shovels, and hoes) and items necessary for daily life, such as kettles and kitchen utensils. Though the circa-1897 Old Blacksmith Shop is now a museum, its forges are still operable and working blacksmiths demonstrate their once-vital art as they craft custom projects. A small gift shop showcases items forged on-site.

The business district of Dubuque, Iowa sits along the Mississippi River

8. Julien Dubuque Bridge

The trussed arch Julien Dubuque Bridge spans 5,760 feet across the Mississippi River, connecting Illinois and Iowa. Drive across the circa-1943 bridge, which follows U.S. Route 20, or enjoy a stroll along the pedestrian walkway.

9. Dubuque Shot Tower

Designed for the production of shot balls, which were formed by the free fall of molten lead from a sieve at the top of a tower into a water basin at its base, the circa-1856, 120-foot-tall Dubuque Shot Tower is one of the country’s last remaining shot towers. The tower, built of Galena Dolomite stone, once produced between 6 and 8 tons of lead shot destined for battlefields daily. Its interior is closed to the public, but outdoor signs detail its use and importance, and you can drive your car right up this still-standing souvenir of U.S. Civil War history.

10. National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium brings the mighty Mississippi to life through engaging exhibits. Meet the river’s inhabitants, including frogs, turtles, bald eagles, and otters; see an authentic dugout canoe crafted by Native Americans and paddled from Minnesota to Dubuque in the 1860s; and step aboard a sand and gravel barge, and explore how erosion affects the river’s ecosystem. Some of the biggest fish species of the Mississippi River, including sturgeon, catfish, and gar, live in the museum’s 30,000-gallon freshwater habitat.

12. Mines of Spain State Recreation Area

Located on 1,437 acres of beautiful wooded and prairie land just south of downtown Dubuque, the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area was voted one of Iowa’s “Watchable Wildlife Areas.” Hike or cross-country ski on the park’s 15 miles of trails, and you might catch a glimpse of a red-shouldered hawk, flying squirrel, white-tailed deer, or wild turkey.

The area’s earliest known inhabitants were the Meskwaki people, and their mounds, village sites, and rock shelters dot the landscape here, as well as former lead mines, which highlight the area’s early industry. When Julien Dubuque, the first European to settle in what would become the state of Iowa, died, the Meskwaki buried him with tribal honors here, high above the Mississippi River beneath a log mausoleum at the same site where the current monument , built in 1897, now stands.

13. Crystal Lake Cave

It took more than 2 million years to form Crystal Lake Cave , the longest living cavern in Iowa. Follow the staircase from the gift shop to tunnels deep underground, where active stalactites and stalagmites are still growing in this ever-evolving cave. The tour’s highlight is Crystal Lake, a 30-foot-long lake that’s just 2 feet deep, yet seems to stretch to infinite depths. The cave is open to visitors between May and mid-October; call ahead to reserve a tour.

Iowa among best states for a road trip this summer. The reason may be due to your wallet

great iowa road trip 2023

Load up the car with snacks and have a playlist ready to go. Iowa is one of the best states in America for a road trip this summer, according to WalletHub .

The personal finance company ranked all 50 U.S. states to determine “the most fun, scenic and wallet-friendly road-trip destinations.” Rankings were based on factors such as average gas prices, hotel prices, number of attractions, traffic-related deaths and more.

The Hawkeye state was ranked 14, with neighboring state Illinois following. Its strong score may be attributed to it ranking high for the categories of cost and safety, coming in at No. 14 (again) and No. 3 overall respectively.

In fact, Iowa was fourth for the lowest average cost of car repairs, WalletHub found.

What is the best state for a road trip in 2024?

Texas nabbed the No. 1 spot on WalletHub’s ranking, scoring high in part thanks to its number of attractions, such as zoos and amusement parks, that those on a road trip may want to check out. Texas also offers motorists thousands of miles of scenic byways in addition to cheap hotel room prices and plenty of restaurants per capita, according to WalletHub.

The top 10 best states for a road trip this summer are:

  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania

What is the worst state for a road trip in 2024?

Delaware came in last, ranking especially low for activities and cost.

What was WalletHub’s methodology?

WalletHub looked at 32 metrics under the categories of costs, safety and activities to determine the best states for road trips, the personal finance company described. For cost, the lowest price of a three-star hotel room was considered among other measures. For safety, measures included the quality of roads to the number of violent crimes. Access to scenic byways and the number of historical sites per capita were just two of the measures for the category of activities. Data used is from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Park Service, TripAdvisor and more.

Record flooding inundates northwest Iowa, prompts evacuations, isolates one city

Historic flooding struck parts of Iowa over the weekend, damaging nearly 2,000 properties and prompting evacuations and disaster declarations.

"I can tell you that the devastation is severe and it's widespread," Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said at a news conference Sunday afternoon in Des Moines.

Flooding on Saturday and overnight into Sunday was the result not just of direct rain — some areas measured 15 inches in two days, Reynolds said — but also of overflowing rivers' flooding dry communities downstream, National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Vachalek said.

Precipitation drawn north from the Gulf of Mexico and parked over northwest Iowa and neighboring states was then unleashed in a clash with a cool, low-pressure wave moving from west to east, he said.

Flooding in Sioux County

An official tally for weather-related deaths over the weekend was not yet available. In Tucson, Arizona, fire officials said a motorist stranded in monsoonal floodwaters was declared dead Saturday when first responders discovered her lifeless body.

In South Dakota, an 87-year-old man driving a utility task vehicle — a golf cart-size conveyance with off-road capability — died when it rolled down an embankment created by a washed-out roadway near Harrisburg on Saturday, the South Dakota Highway Patrol said in a statement.

Areas affected by direct rain or overflowing rivers also included southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota, according to the National Weather Service.

The weekend rain fell on already saturated ground, making flooding fast and widespread in the northwest corner of Iowa. Reynolds indicated that farmland was hit hard.

There were enough rain and river swelling in the Des Moines, Rock and Little Sioux rivers, among others, to break flood level records at 16 locations in Iowa, Reynolds said.

More than 1,000 Iowans needed shelter overnight, 1,900 properties across the state were damaged, and hundreds of residential properties were destroyed, she said.

Some cities did not have working clean water systems Sunday, and some had sewage system failures, she said. Disaster declarations covered 25 Iowa counties by nightfall Sunday.

Spencer, a city of more than 11,000, was cut off from the rest of the state by floodwater overnight as hundreds were evacuated to two city shelters, Mayor Steve Bomgaars said.

Spencer Fire Chief Jesse Coulson said city first responders, with the mutual-aid help of neighboring departments, made 383 rescues since the first one related to floodwater was reported at 5:15 a.m. Saturday.

Flooding in Sioux City, Iowa

One person was missing, Coulson said at a news conference Sunday where Bomgaars also spoke. Coulson indicated the missing could be recovered from a flooded vehicle after waters recede.A nighttime curfew for the city was to return Sunday, Bomgaars said, as authorities were expected to fan out and check on residents cut off by floodwaters after they recede a few feet.

On Friday, city and county officials expected the Little Sioux River to crest at 17.5 feet but said it did so multiple feet higher. The crest level was an estimate, however.

"The electronic gauge that the Iowa Flood Center put in was under water," Clay County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Eric Tigges said at the Spencer news conference. "That makes it difficult for us to get an accurate reading."

He and city officials believe the river crested at 22.1 feet, beating a record set in 1953 by about 2 feet. With that number falling, some roads were passable and residents could get out with careful planning, officials said.

"We're going to recover from this," Bomgaars said.

In South Dakota, Gov. Kristi Noem declared a statewide emergency and said the worst of the flooding would come Monday and Tuesday by river.

The Big Sioux River in South Dakota was expected to crest Sunday night, and state officials closed Interstate 29 in the southeastern part of the state to build a temporary levee across it, they said in a statement.

The threat of severe thunderstorms remained, with the director of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, John Benson, urging residents to stay vigilant.

Flooding in Hawarden, Iowa

The Des Moines River at Humboldt, a small city about 105 miles north of Des Moines, was forecast to crest Wednesday at 17 feet, more than a foot higher than its record in 1969, according to the National Weather Service. On Sunday it flowed more than a foot above flood stage, the agency said. The rain and swelling waterways contrasted with persistent heat in much of the rest of the country on the first weekend of summer. Heat alerts covered an estimated 95 million people in the U.S. on Sunday, with near-record high temperatures — 5 to 15 degrees above normal — expected to remain at least through the early part of the week.

As high pressure baked the mid-Atlantic, where record temperatures were expected Sunday and Monday, the Southwest broiled in sometimes triple-digit temperatures, and parts of the Northeast were expected to experience brief rain and thunderstorms alongside high temperatures.

Another cool wave moving in from the West was expected to clash with warm, wet air stationed over the Great Plains and the Midwest, triggering the possibility of more severe thunderstorms, federal forecasters said.

Rain, wind, hail and flooding were possible again beginning Monday night for northern Iowa, as well as for northern Missouri, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, southwest Lower Michigan, northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio, they said.

"It's not going to cease," Benson, the Iowa emergency management director, said of the flooding, thunder and rain. "It's going to blossom."

Iowa Road Trip

Roadtripping your way through the SW Iowa Art Tour (2023)

great iowa road trip 2023

Sept 15, 16, and 17th marks the 10th anniversary of the Southwest Iowa Art Tour. It’s a self-guided tour, meaning you can choose from any of the 18 art destinations. It’s the perfect road trip adventure, as you stop anywhere you’d like, not just the art locations, but also other destinations and roadside adventures, as well as some great dining options!

Table of Contents

Where is the SW Iowa Art Tour?

The Southwest Iowa Art Tour takes place at 18 different locations across SW Iowa during the weekend of Sept 15, 16, and 17. Here’s a link to the road map for the 2023 SW Iowa Art Tour: https://www.swiarttour.com/road-map.html

How did the SW Iowa Art Tour start?

In 2014, a group of 21 artists planned out the original SW Iowa Art Tour as a way to get folks to travel between the stops, or what they call gathering spaces. Today, 8 of the original participants are still on the tour: Zack Jones, Paul Koch, Phil Lamb, Cece Lock, Curt Adams, Cherie Miner, Tom Harnack, and Fred Bolton.

Two of the original locations/stops are also still being featured: The Art Church in Malvern and The Painted Camel Gallery in Macedonia.

Can I see ahead of time what’s at each stop on the SW Iowa Art Tour?

Yes, their website lists the artists and shows a few visuals for what to expect at each of the gathering places: https://www.swiarttour.com/2023-gathering-places.html

I’d like to mix some other roadside attractions with the art tour, what does Iowa Road Trip recommend?

First of all, we highly recommend stopping at The Painted Camel in Macedonia and The Art Church in Malvern, they are both worthwhile stops. The Art Church is celebrating its Sesquicentennial with a major exterior renovation, so you’ll want to check that out.

Malvern is known for two things: cycling on the Wabash Trace, a railroad-turned-biking trail running through town and for being an artsy town. Malvern features the tree sculptures of Woody Jones and the Art Church, run by Zach Jones, along with other art destinations and sculptures. Despite a population of around one thousand people, Malvern will host 3 gathering spaces during the 2023 SW Iowa Art Tour. In prior years when I visited, they had closed off the main street to provide food and live music to attract not only the art seekers but also the cyclists from the trail. Malvern even has its own walking art tour: https://malvernia.com/experience/recreation-attractions/

Here are a few items to check out:

  • Bodega Victoriana Winery at 60397 Rd. Serves wine and tapas.
  • Sacrilegious Ciderword at 17 N Vine St, featuring seasonal flavored hard ciders.
  • Adriano’s Brick Oven Pizza at 18 N Walnut St.
