About This Winery

Hall St. Helena Winery, a historic Napa Valley winery originally founded in 1885 as Bergfeld Winery, was long known as the Napa Valley Co-op, and was one of the primary winemaking facilities in Napa for much of the last century. Today, a redesigned visitor center and tasting room welcome visitors with warmth and elegance.

Guests to the winery can sample the portfolio of HALL wines, relax in arbor-covered courtyards and take in original works of modern art and sculpture from the Halls’ personal collection. Future plans for the winery include restoring the historic buildings on the grounds and developing a spectacular visitor center.

A huge sculpture standing well over ten feet tall guides you to the tasting room entrance. Once inside, don’t forget to look upward at the commissioned blown-glass sculpture “Red Rain” (stylized Cabernet drops) that graces the redwood interior. The wine production focus is on Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, with three versions currently available. Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc round out the winery’s limited production.

A VIP program guides you through the winery grounds, tasting the current releases and visiting the historic Bergfeld Winery, where you will sample wines still in the barrel. Advance reservations are required, and the fee is $20 per guest. The Halls also have a facility in Rutherford available for tours and tasting, also by reservation only.

Winery Information

Megan Gunderson – Vice President of Winemaking

Megan began her career in the Napa Valley in 2001 when she moved from

Colorado to California and worked as an intern at Robert Mondavi Winery. While at Mondavi, she discovered a passion for wine and viticulture and went on to become a Laboratory Manager for St. Supery Vineyards in Rutherford, then Dominus Estates in Oakville. At Dominus, she was able to refine her winemaking skills under the mentorship of Christian Moueix and Jean-Claude Barrouet, learning to hone her winemaking craft with unique methods.

Megan has made several trips to France to study winemaking techniques, most notably her trip to Burgundy where she honed her understanding of more complex wines. Megan’s multiple degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular

Genetics have given her a unique and unmatched perspective into the scientific aspects of winemaking.

Commitment to Sustainability

At HALL Wines, we pride ourselves on being leaders in innovation, while being cognizant of our beginnings.  We take this to heart in every aspect of HALL Wines from our vineyard practices and winemaking techniques to our tasting rooms and the facilities on our properties.

In the Vineyard & Winemaking Practices

At HALL, we are passionate about environmental responsibility and sustainable stewardship of our land. All of our vineyards have been certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Farming organically involves committing to two principals:  ecological production and maintaining organic integrity.  Additionally, production methods must conserve soil, pollute little, and promote a healthy ecosystem.

We value the land and we also value its creation, which is why we continue the tradition of hand picking all of the grapes throughout our estate vineyards.  Once the grapes are brought to our winemaking facility, we process the grapes with innovative techniques to ensure the highest standard and quality of our wine.

We have been using a cutting edge digital optical sorting machine to help us achieve this.  The machine uses lasers and sensors to identify which grapes meet the requirements that we set and allow only the finest fruit to reach our fermentation tanks, barrels, and finished wines.

Winery Facility & Visitor Center

The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in 2003 and have merged history with innovation with the state-of-the-art, LEED® Gold certified winery.

In 2009, HALL became the first winery in California to be distinguished as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certified fully-sustainable production facility by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Green Building Rating System.  Since then, we also received another prestigious award of LEED® Gold Certification for modern Tasting Room & high-tech Production Facility.  In addition to our recognition through LEED® certifications, we are the first vineyard and winery to install an ECOtality electric charging vehicle station.

In the Community

“Since launching HALL Wines, we have been dedicated to the preservation of the environment and bringing innovation to Napa Valley.  HALL Wines is always looking for new ways to provide support and dedication to the sustainable-living movement. We continue to reinforce our commitment to the health of the land, as well as that of the greater Napa Valley ecosystem”, notes Ambassador Kathryn Hall, HALL Wines owner and vintner.
