  • Badami:  Badami, formerly known as Vatapi. It is famous for its rock-cut monuments such as the Badami cave temples, as well as the structural temples such as the Bhutanatha temples, Badami Shivalaya, and Jambulingesvara temple. In the local tradition, Badami town is linked to the Agasthya legend of the epics. In the Mahabharata, sage Agastya is described in the epic as a sage with enormous powers of ingestion and digestion. To kill men, asura Vatapi used to become a goat and his brother Ilvala would cook him. Then, Vatapi would recollect in the stomach and tear himself out from the inside of the victim, killing the victim. When Agastya arrives, Ilvala offers the goat again. He kills Vatapi by digesting the meal as soon as he ate, giving Vatapi no time to self-organize. Agastya thus kills the demons Vatapi and Ilvala. This legend is believed to have played out near Badami, and thus the name Vatapi or Agasthya lake.
  • Sanakpur lake:  Of course, we ain't missing out on this gorgeous beauty. You need to walk uphill after you reach the lake. The glimpse of the scarcely crowded lake is a treat for your eyes. It simply is nature in its best form for your mind to seek solace. Why not do a workstation and cliff jump in between? Here is the place to jump off a boulder and we definitely got you covered! And not to forget there will be some lovely coracles waiting just for you to take you on a ride across the lake.
  • Vittala Temple:  The 16th-century Vittala Temple, Hampi's most beautiful building, is situated between stones 2.5 kilometers from the bazaar. Construction of the temple may have begun under Krishnadevaraya's rule (r 1509–29). The building was never finished or dedicated, but its magnificent sculptural work is now regarded as the height of Vijayanagar art.
  • Virupaksha Temple:  The most well-known temple in Hampi sometimes referred to as the Pampapathi temple, was constructed in the seventh century. Its exquisitely carved walls, each of which tells a mythological tale, are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple contains shrines for Sage Vidyaranya and Virupaksha. For devotees of Lord Shiva, Virupaksha Temple is a revered sanctuary. It is situated on the Tungabhadra's southern banks. One of India's oldest temples in continuous operation, the Temple has never experienced a non-operational day since its founding in the 7th century AD.
  • Lotus Mahal:  Open pavilions are located at the bottom of the two-story, attractive structure, and balconies are located at the top. The Mahal (Palace), a spectacular example of the blending of Hindu and Muslim architectural details, is named from the exquisite, geometrically structured colonnaded apses, that mimic the petals of a lotus flower spreading to the sun.

Anjeyanadri Hill:  The Anjaneyadri hill in Hampi lies in the center of the Anegondi area, Karnataka state, India. It is the birthplace of Hanuman. According to Sanatana Dharma, Hanuman was born to Anjana and thus Hanuman was also called Anjaneya, and his birthplace was Anjaneyadri (Anjana's Hill). The hill has a Hanuman temple at the top. It has about 575 steps. The temple has a rock-carved idol of Lord Hanuman. There are also shrines of Lord Rama and Sita and Anjana Devi temple in the vicinity.

Go around all day exploring the Vijayanagar metropolis looking at the temples, forts and buildings. And here comes the part where you can climb to the top and get your bird's eye view of the beautifully crafted city resting on the banks of the serene Tungabhadra. You can also trek to Matangaparvat to enjoy the exquisite views.

Sanakpur lake:

Of course we ain't missing out on this gorgeous beauty. You need to walk uphill after you reach the lake . The glimpse of the scarcely crowded lake is a treat for your eyes. It simply is nature in it's best form for your mind to seek solace. Why not do a workation and cliff jump in between? Here is the place to jump off a boulder and we definitely got you covered! And not to forget there will be some lovely coracles waiting just for you to take you on a ride across the lake.

Vittala Temple:

The 16th-century Vittala Temple, Hampi's most beautiful building, is situated between stones 2.5 kilometres from the bazaar. Construction of the temple may have begun under Krishnadevaraya's rule (r 1509–29). The building was never finished or dedicated, but its magnificent sculptural work is now regarded as the height of Vijayanagar art.

Virupaksha Temple:

The most well-known temple in Hampi, sometimes referred to as the Pampapathi temple, was constructed in the seventh century.

Lotus Mahal:

Open pavilions are located at the bottom of the two-story, attractive structure, and balconies are located at the top. The Mahal (Palace), a spectacular example of the blending of Hindu and Muslim architectural details, is named from the exquisite, geometrically structured colonnaded apses , mimic petals of a lotus flower spreading to the sun.

The history of Hampi

First, the history bit. Hampi, known as the City of Victory, was the proud capital of the medieval Vijayanagara empire, which ruled over a large part of Southern India for more than two centuries.

The landscape’s craggy hills, wide Tungabhandra river and massive boulders provided natural defences. Inside the city walls, a series of kings built ostentatious statues and temples to showcase their wealth and power.

When the city was finally defeated by a combined might of armies in 1565, it was robbed, pillaged and left desolate. What remains is a host of ruins, displaying some of the finest examples of medieval Indian architecture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

How to get around Hampi

I spent two days exploring this city, testing out different ways to get around. The first was a tour by rickshaw, then the next day I hired a bicycle and made my own way around, which was great fun. Both options allow you to see all the sites in one day.

This is the first view you get of Hampi from across the river where many of the guest houses are. A couple of guys with a boat carry people, scooters and bikes across.

best places to visit in hampi in one day

Here are all the ancient and amazing places you can visit in Hampi on your first day. The city is well worth a visit, as its structures and ruins are so memorable.

Virupaksha Temple

The majestic 7th century Virupaksha Temple is one of the most visible places to visit in Hampi. Built during the Vijayanagara Empire, it towers over the river bank and is the city’s primary centre of pilgrimage for Hindus.

best places to visit in hampi in one day

Kadelakalu Ganesha

Kadelakalu Ganesha is not far away by bike or rickshaw. It is an ornate structure housing an enormous statue of the multi-limbed, elephant-headed Ganesha. This Hindu god is revered as the remover of obstacles. He is also known as the patron of arts and sciences, the god of intellect and wisdom, and the Lord of new beginnings.

best places to visit in hampi in one day

Lakshmi-Narasimha

Standing at 6.7 metres, Lakshmi-Narasimha is one of Hampi’s most important monuments and examples of Vijayanagara architecture. It was created in 1528 from a single boulder of granite. According to Hindu mythology, Narasimha, an incarnation of Hindu deity Vishnu, has the face of a lion and the body of a human. Originally, a small figure of Goddess Lakshmi sat in Narasimha’s lap, but it was removed during vandalism in a 1565 raid that led to the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Sister Stones

Legend has it, they were two women cast into stone when they badmouthed Hampi. For the record, I really liked the place.

Mahanavami Dibba

This statue is located at the Mahanavami Dibba, a beautiful stone platform in the Royal Enclosure of Hampi.

The Lotus Mahal

The pretty pink-hued Lotus Mahal is another one of the essential places to visit in Hampi. It is a beautifully designed palace within the Zenana Enclosure, a segregated area that was used by the royal women of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. It is one of the few structures that survived the 1565 attacks. There is a small charge for foreign visitors but it’s well worth it.

The Elephant Stables

Nearby, just outside the same enclosure, are the Elephant stables, which used to house the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire. It’s incredible to imagine the elephants strolling in and out of this huge structure. Like the Lotus Mahal, there is a small fee to access this area.

Vitthala Temple

The Vitthala temple, in the north east of the city, is definitely one of the must-see places to visit in Hampi. The intricacy of its architecture and design is unparalleled.

The temple has a musical secret. If you strike the temple’s pillars with your fingers, they make a twinkly melodic sound, each with a different note. The large temple complex contains structures including the shrine of the Goddess (Devi shrine) and the famous Stone Chariot.

The Stone Chariot

The stone chariot here at the Vitthala temple is another shrine and one of three famous stone chariots in India . Originally, the wheels could turn.

best places to visit in hampi in one day

Day two of your Hampi itinerary is an ideal time to revisit any of the ancient sites you may have missed or you can choose a different way to explore them. I decided to hire a bike and had a fantastic day cycling around the area.

Alternatively, you can choose to simply relax in Hampi’s Hippie Island backpacker area, take in the views of the rice paddy fields and feast on the delicious food on offer here.

Anjanadri Hill Temple

On your second day in Hampi, make sure you visit the Anjanadri Hill Temple, otherwise known as the monkey temple. Here you can climb the 575 steps to the top of the hill, where you can enjoy incredible views over the area. It’s a great place to go at sunset.

Don’t be tempted to feed the monkeys though and keep your electronics hidden, as despite their cute faces, they won’t be afraid to jump on you if they see something they want!

The best places to stay in Hampi

One of the most popular homestays in Hampi is the Shankar Homestay , which has garden views, free WiFi, air conditioning and excellent amenities in the rooms. Alternatively, the beautifully furnished Lotus Riya homestay is loved for its fantastic hosts, who serve up a delicious cooked breakfast every morning.

If price is your main concern, try the Little Banana Homestay , which has rustic rooms with a lovely boho vibe. As the name suggests, it’s located close to a little banana farm, so the surroundings are peaceful. For hostels in Hampi, try the Happy Treat Hostel & Cafe , which is spacious and clean, with a friendly vibe and a mixed or female-only dorm room available.

Final thoughts on a Hampi itinerary for 2 days

Even though I only spent a couple of days in Hampi, it was definitely a highlight of my month in India . Exploring the temples, ruins and statues, whether with a rickshaw guide or by bicycle, will inspire you and leave you with a lifetime of memories.

About Hampi Tour

At Hampi Tour, the past come alive, Whispering winds, magnificent ruins, travel and scents of a bygone era all linger fresh here. And they virtually transport you to a world of kings, battle and long forgotten marvels. Welcome to the world’s largest open-air museum – Hampi Karnataka. Hampi was the capital city of the magnificent Vijayanagar Empire. Founded by Harihara and Bukka in 1336, it fell to the rulers of Northern India in 1565 after the Battle of Talikota, and subsequently lapsed into decline and abandonment. The once-proud city of victory is now a city of desolation. However, the ruins of these historical monuments have stood the ravages of man and time and still evoke memories of regal splendour.

Hampi Tour – amidst an awesome boulder strewn landscape along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi was one of the glittering showpieces of India’s might in the 15th century. There were opulent palaces, marvelous temples, massive fortifications, baths, markets, aqueducts, pavilions and stables for royal elephants. The city’s merchants traded in diamonds, pearls, fine silks, rocades, horses and much more. Most of the important structures and ruins are located in two areas, which are generally referred to as the Royal centre and the sacred centre contains structures that seem to have been primarily for ceremonial use. What to see:- Virupaksha Temple, Ganesh Images, Laxminarasimha, Badavilinga, Elephant Stables, Pushkarni, Lotus Mahal, Vijay Vitala Temple, Stone Chariot, Hazara Rama Temple, Mahanavami Dibba, Queen’s Bath, Krishna Temple.

9 Must Things To Do In Hampi! Backpack Go Hampi

Photo of Bhupendra Singh

Coracle Ride Sanapur Lake

Photo of 9 Must Things To Do In Hampi! Backpack Go Hampi by Bhupendra Singh

Do you know Hampi ranked 2nd New York Times’s must-see global destinations!

Recently, I visited to Hampi which was the Vijayanagar Empire in the 16th century and one of the richest cities in the world. Hampi has more than 1000 of well preserved stone monuments. This includes various temples, palaces and forts.

From my visit, I would like to suggest must things to do in Hampi.

1. Stay in Hippie Island:

This very place is also considered as Goa without the beaches. If you backpacking to Hampi, Hippie Island should be your ideal place to stay. To reach Hippie island you need to take a boat, which costs you 50 rupees and takes 5 min to reach there. There are various options for stay as lot of cafes provide shacks for relaxing.

2. Coracle ride:

Coracle ride is must thing to do in Hampi. It is one of the unique things to experience in the ancient city. Coracle is a round shaped boat made of wickerwork that can accommodate around 8 people. These boats are there since the time of Vijayanagara Empire. So, do not miss the ride!

Sanapur Lake

3. Cycle Tour:

Cycling around the ruins of Hampi is one of the best ways to explore the city. One of the best ways to explore the ruins of hampi is to take a cycle ride. If you are budgeted backpacker like me, you can take this option. You will be witnessing the widespread ruins of Hampi especially the Royal Enclosure. It will not cost you more than 200 for a day to explore the Hampi. You will be needing a little bit of energy but trust me, you will enjoy it. However, if you are taking a cycle tour make sure to start early so that you can avoid harsh sun rays. Also, you need at least 3-4 hours to explore the major monuments of the Hampi.

4. Sunset at Sanapur Lake:

Watching sunset at Sanapur Lake is yet another must to do thing. Watching sunset in the middle of boulders is something you don't want to miss. Sanapur lake is the paradise for cliff divers. You can lay down under the balanced stones or take a coracle ride.

5. Cliff Jumping:

What? Cliff jumping in Hampi? Even I did not believe in this when I heard about cliff jumping. Sanapur lake is one of the best spots for cliff jumping. There we saw many sings that said it is not safe to swim because of crocodile in the lake. However, cliff jumping is yet another must to do in Hampi, especially at Sanapur lake. Even if you do not want to swim or jump you can enjoy the peaceful sunset.

6. Boat Ride:

Another interesting thing do to in Hampi is to take a boat ride to get to Hippie island. It will cost you much and you can find boat at every 15-30 min. However, the last boat is around 5:30 so make sure to wind up your tour before it.

7. Vittala Temple:

Vitthala temple is a must visit place in Hampi. At Vitthala temple you will come across Stone Chariot which is also printed on a 50 rupee note and symbol of Karnataka Tourism. You can take a mesmerizing 2 km walk from Virupaksha temple. In between you will find ruins of other temples as well. Note to take at least 2 litters of water.

8. Visiting The Royal Enclosure:

Royal Enclosure contains various sites to visit that can not be covered in one day. This area was once the centre of Vijayanagara Empire. Some of the places such as, Pushkarmi, Queens bath and Lotus Mahal are important places to visit.

As mentioned, you can get most amazing food at hippie Island and these cafes serve delicious Indian and Western cuisine. We went to Mango Tree Restaurant eating over here is absolute value for money. The place is quite big and they have an amazing sitting arrangement. Do try their special Banoffee Pie, which is a dessert.
