Hans Zimmer talks about first North American tour dates in 7 years, the magic of composing for film

Film composer Hans Zimmer says his famous friends Pharrell Williams and Johnny Marr convinced him to go on tour, joking that he “can’t hide behind the screen forever.” (March 11)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For generations, German composer Hans Zimmer ‘s film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King,” “Gladiator,” the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and most recently, “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two.” This fall, Zimmer will bring his award-winning scores to the live stage.

His “Hans Zimmer Live” tour, which sold out in Europe, will make its way to the U.S. and Canada this fall, marking the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in seven years.

The last time, as some fans may recall, was a 2017 Coachella performance.

Over Zoom from New York, Zimmer said he was inspired after “refusing to get onto a stage for 40 years” because of something his friends, The Smiths’ Johnny Marr and Pharrell Williams, told him.

“You have to look your audience in the eye. You can’t hide behind the screen forever. You know, you owe it to your, you know, audience,” he says they told him. And after Coachella, he realized: “I can do this,” he said.

Having done the run in Europe, “we’re at the top of our game at the moment,” he says of his orchestra.

Don’t expect a traditional, classical music setting or a piano concerto — at “Hans Zimmer Live,” there is no conductor, no sheet music in front of each musician, and not a single frame from any of the films he’s referencing.

“I come from rock and roll and I believe in putting on a show,” he says. “People stay with us because we give them an experience which they’ve never had before... Life is hard. Life is tough these days. And people worked hard to go to pay for these tickets, so we better pull off a show that is absolutely worthy of them coming and seeing us.”

“Hans Zimmer Live” kicks off at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Ga. on Sept. 6 and will hit 17 cities across the U.S. and Canada before concluding at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on Oct. 6.

The tour includes stops in Hollywood, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; New York; Baltimore; Boston; Montreal and Toronto; Minneapolis; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas; Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Oakland, California, and Seattle.

Zimmer says attendees can expect a diverse audience. “I’ve looked out at the audience and there’s a mom with her grandson sitting next to a guy with a mohawk, sitting next to a man in a business suit, sitting next to another bunch of, you know, bikers,” Zimmer said. “So, it’s not just multi-generational, it’s multicultural.”

In more ways than one: Zimmer’s orchestra is from Ukraine; “Two weeks after the invasion started , we managed to get about half of them out of Odessa,” he says. Lebo M, who sings “The Lion King” theme, was a political refugee from South Africa when Zimmer first met him. Pedro Eustache, his woodwind player, is from Venezuela , “and he thinks he can probably never go back home,” says Zimmer.

“I have this very, very international group of players and ... part of what makes them such emotionally committed musicians is that they all have a story to tell you.”

“Hans Zimmer Live,” which has been recently rearranged, includes works from “Gladiator,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” “The Lion King,” “The Last Samurai,” and “Dune.”

“Each piece is connected with the adventure of actually creating it, the adventure of actually making that movie, the adventure of the collaboration, the adventure of, you know, ‘How did we get here?”, he says. “Where did this journey start? And how can we make sure that it never ends?

“Each one of those movies is painted in color and affected by what is going on around us. And they have all been extraordinary journeys.”

All of these films and their scores are vastly different, but Zimmer’s idiosyncratic approach and arrangements should be considered the connective tissue. That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that makes an effective — and affecting — score.

“You need to be committed. You need to be honest. You can’t be sentimental,” he says of a successful score. “The other thing is, it’s the people who are performing it. Because if you think about it, the last actors that really get hired, the last actors that perform in a movie, are the musicians. So, I’m very careful about picking the people I work with.”

German film composer Hans Zimmer is going on tour.

The Oscar-winning film scorer behind "The Lion King," " Dune " and " The Dark Knight " trilogy will take his talents on the road following a successful tour of Europe.

Hans Zimmer Live will make its way to North America, hitting 17 cities in the U.S. and Canada. The last time Zimmer, 66, performed in the U.S. was in 2017.

That year, Zimmer told the "Fan Theory" podcast, from the USA TODAY Network's Asbury Park Press , that he was "bullied into" touring.

"It wasn't my fault," he said at the time. "I got bullied into it, bullied into it by my friends, by other musicians going, 'There comes a point where you have to come out of your dark, windowless room. You have to stop hiding behind a screen and you have to actually look your audience in the eye and do things in real time.'"

Zimmer's 2024 North American tour kicks off Sept. 6 in Duluth, Georgia, and ends in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Oct. 6.

The composer has won two Oscars and four Grammys for his film scores, which also include "Gladiator" and "Crimson Tide." The music producer is a frequent collaborator with director Christophe r Nolan , scoring several more of his films including "Interstellar" and "Inception."

Hans Zimmer Announces New North American Dates for His Upcoming World Tour

Hans Zimmer has expanded the list of United States and Canadian dates he announced in November , which form part of his upcoming world tour. Including previously-announced European tour dates, Zimmer’s tour will now have a sprawling five month run.

According to a November statement from Zimmer, at least some of these shows (those specified at Zimmer’s site ) will be billed as “Hans Zimmer Revealed,” including his performance at Coachella this month. Zimmer’s concerts will feature creatively “reimagined” versions of sections of his soundtracks for director Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy), and will reportedly incorporate “special guests from the rock and pop world.” Zimmer will also play highlights from his decades-long career as an esteemed film-soundtrack writer, including his work for Pirates of the Caribbean , Gladiator , and more.

The award-winning film composer returns to perform in North America for the first time in seven years

Award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer announced he will bring his smash-hit tour Hans Zimmer Live to North America this fall with arena dates across the United States and Canada, including a birthday show at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Following a sold-out European run, the tour marks the North American return Zimmer who rocked Coachella in 2017. With the support of his outstanding 18-piece live band and a full orchestra, audiences will be swept away from the sound of the first note and journey through an array of well-loved scores throughout Zimmer’s career. Hans Zimmer Live kicks off in Duluth, GA at the Gas South Arena on September 6th and will visit 17 cities across the US and Canada, concluding at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC on October 6th.

Tickets are available starting March 22nd at 10 am local time.

In a groundbreaking audio and visual show, the multiple Academy Award and Grammy-winning Zimmer, his band and the orchestra will perform a selection of the composer’s scores from some of cinema’s biggest films. The newly arranged concert suites include music from Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, The Lion King, The Last Samurai, and Dune , for which Zimmer received his second Academy Award.

Hans Zimmer has scored more than 500 projects across all mediums, which have grossed more than 28 billion dollars at the worldwide box office combined. Zimmer has been honored with two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, four Grammys, an American Music Award, and a Tony Award. Beyond his award-winning compositions, Zimmer is a remarkably successful touring artist, having just concluded his second Hans Zimmer Live European tour and performing in the Middle East at Dubai’s renowned Coca-Cola Arena for two consecutive nights and Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix. His World of Hans Zimmer Tour, which he curated and directed, will start its latest European run of over 50 dates this March on the heels of Dune: Part Two ’s release.

Hans Zimmer To Play Huge Concert At The United Center As Part Of New North American Tour

Award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer will bring his sell-out tour to North America this fall with a stop at Chicago's United Center in September.

There is a wide range of exciting events to look forward to in the coming months from spring starting with the Chicagohenge spectacle and all the bloom it brings, to festivals like Lollapalooza, street parties like Sundays on State and all the other magical summer activities coming up in Chicago .

When it comes to live music Chicago attracts some of the best and now there is a once-in-a-lifetime concert coming up for concert lovers and cinephiles in equal measure.

Award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer just announced that he will be bringing his smash-hit tour Hans Zimmer Live to North America this coming fall with 17 different stops including a show at Chicago’s United Center .

Following a sold-out European run, the tour marks the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in over 7 years with the last being his Coachella concert in 2017.

Guests can expect a mesmerizing audio and visual show from Zimmer’s live band and orchestra including music from blockbuster movies like Gladiator, Dune, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, and more well-loved scores from his glittering career.

The tour will kick off in Georgia with a show at Duluth’s Gas South Arena on September 6 before making its way around the United States and Canada including a birthday show at New York’s Madison Square Garden on September 12,

The 17-city tour stops by Chicago for a show at the United Center on Sunday, September 22 , and wraps up in Vancouver at the Rogers Arena on October 6.

The mastermind Hans Zimmer has just added 18 shows to his first North American tour.

The Oscar-winning composer behind the scores of The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Thin Red Line and Inception announced a brief west coast tour earlier this year which included performances at Coachella.

Now, Zimmer will travel to major locations like Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and more, plus a two-night run at New York City's Radio City Music Hall for the extended series.

Hans details his upcoming concerts divided into two segments, the first being performances featuring his earlier compositions and the second showcasing "re-imagined" versions of his more recent pieces featuring special guests.

Hans Zimmer is leaving the studio and returning to the stage.

The legendary composer — behind such iconic film scores like “The Dark Knight,” “Dune,” “Gladiator,” “Inception,” “Lion King” and many more — is embarking on a 19-concert ‘Hans Zimmer Live’ North American tour this September and October.

Along the way, the two-time Oscar winner will headline at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday, Sept. 12.

About Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer has scored more than 500 projects across all mediums, which, combined, have grossed more than 28 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Zimmer has been honored with two Academy Awards ® , three Golden Globes ® , four Grammys ® , an American Music Award, and a Tony ® Award. His work highlights include Dune, No Time to Die, Gladiator, The Thin Red Line, As Good as It Gets, Rain Man, The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Thelma and Louise, The Last Samurai, 12 Years A Slave, Blade Runner 2049 (co-scored w/ Benjamin Wallfisch) and Dunkirk, as well as recent film scores including Top Gun: Maverick, Wonder Woman 1984 and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Most recently, Zimmer won the Academy Award ® for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures for Dune. Ramin djawadi, trending on billboard.

Djawadi has received 15 BMI Awards for his scores for films, cable TV programs and streamed media. He won back-to-back Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018-19 for outstanding music composition for a series (original dramatic score) for Game of Thrones . He has received five other Primetime Emmy nods for Game of Thrones, Prison Break, FlashForward and Westworld . In addition, Djawadi has received three Grammy nods.

“We’re excited to honor Ramin Djawadi and celebrate his outstanding musical achievements,” McKnight in a statement. “Ramin’s innovative compositions for films, TV shows, and video games have captivated audiences worldwide, exemplifying his remarkable range and talent.”

Djawadi collaborated with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy on Amazon Prime’s Fallout and partnered with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss on the Netflix series 3 Body Problem .

Djawadi, 49, got his start by collaborating with Hans Zimmer on such films as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Batman Begins . (Both composers were born in what was then known as West Germany.) Djawadi went on to score such films as Iron Man , Eternals, A Wrinkle in Time, Clash of the Titans, Pacific Rim and Blade:Trinity.

In addition, Djawadi, has composed music for several video games including “Medal of Honor,” “Gears of War 4” and “Gears 5.”
