My husband and I did the North Shore tour with Susan, and had a fantastic time. This food tour is great for visitors, but learning about responsible practices and how our island can sustain itself is vital for Kauai's future.

If you are really into food and want to find the hidden gems, Tasting Kauai is the place to go. We made 6 stops and all were great. Baked goods, juice, saimin, Japanese American fusion, poke, appetizers, and deserts were all tasted.

Worth doing for sure! We learned so much about the food and history of the island and went away feeling like this was one of the best things we did on Kauai. The food was so delicious we will go back for more!

This was a lovely afternoon in the Poipu area, and the food was excellent. Our final stop at the Farmer's Market was very crowded, but the visit with Judy the pastry chef made it worthwhile.

It was really cool to meet the owners of the food stops and learn about their history and the place. The food itself was really good at each place. Also, it's fun to try these unexpectedly good spots.

Turtle sighted and lots of delicious food.

Our tour guide “D” was so friendly, kind, informative, and very considerate. We had many stops for different tastes of Hawaii. The tasting started with Malasadas from the Leonard’s food truck. We also stopped at a macada ... more mia nut farm that also had this sweet little pearl shop where I bought gifts for my daughters and myself. The best part for me was when we stopped at a beach to try and see turtles and my family did spot some playful ones! We stopped and had garlic shrimp for lunch which was delicious and filling and we ended the day shopping in Haleiwa Town. I think we stopped at like 3 beaches and the Blowhole. It was a whirlwind and a little taste of everything!

Beautiful North Shore!

We loved this tour! We saw SO MUCH all in one day! The morning view at the Blowhole is worth getting up early! We were treated to an extra exciting Honu (turtle) sighting! The North Shore area is still a beautiful ge ... more m on the island, quintessential Hawaii. The Temple and Waimea Falls were welcome peaceful hideaways, away from the Honolulu city vibe. The surrounding mountains are majestic! We learned quite a lot about Hawaiian history and culture. We tasted SO MANY Hawaiian delicious delights- Leonard’s masadas, North Shore shrimp, macadamia nuts, fresh farm fruits, Matsuto’s shave ice, Dole Whip! My mouth is watering, Hawaii weather is perfect! Sure there is a little rain, but the rainbows afterwards are so beautiful! The bus is comfortable. We didn’t have to deal with driving or finding parking. Our tour guide was an excellent driver! Our tour guide also shared some beautiful personal stories of his life and family in Hawaii. My girls were especially touched by his pineapple farming memories.

A great day out seeing beautiful Oahu

We really enjoyed our day out with Jackson on Thanksgiving Day. We appreciate him working on the holiday to show us around. Loved the tasty treats, gorgeous views and the interesting/knowledgeable commentary.

Great cultural lesson

The crew was very friendly and helpful. I learned a lot about Hawaiian culture from them.

Our family -seniors and adult children-were delighted with the sunset sail. It was the best thing I did in Oahu. We learned about Hawaiian values, the significance of the leis, danced some hula steps, and the men pounded ... more taro. It was fun, staff was excellent, and we ended with a chant to the sunset. Everyone was so glad we did this. Highly recommended.

WSU researcher awarded fellowship in robotics

Kyle Yoshida, a postdoctoral researcher in WSU’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, has received a Washington Research Foundation fellowship to study human-robot interactions and agricultural robotics — work that he hopes to bring someday to his home in Hawaii.

The foundation, which supports groundbreaking research and early-stage technology companies, annually provides three-year fellowships to about 10 Washington postdoctoral researchers for work with potential for real-world impact.

Yoshida, this year’s only WSU fellowship recipient, is interested in developing better agricultural solutions for Hawaii. He is working in the lab of Ming Luo, Flaherty Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, who conducts research on autonomous robotic systems.

Hawaii relies almost entirely on tourism for its economy and imports most of its food, which makes it expensive and carbon intensive.

“With the cost of labor, there’s pretty much no more agriculture,” said Yoshida. “Reigniting our agriculture industry would be a huge thing.”

Being able to grow food in Hawaii would provide the opportunity for people to improve their health with better food as well as to diversify the economy, he said. Yoshida hopes that robotics might provide solutions to agricultural challenges.

“Allowing people who live there to actually go back to farming, become more sustainable, and lower emissions from reduced imports would have a multiplicative effect,” he said.

Yoshida got his undergraduate degree at Harvard, where at the time he was thought to be the first student to receive a bioengineering degree with a minor in African studies. He found similar themes with the African diaspora as with the Hawaiian experience. More native Hawaiians now live outside Hawaii than live there. After graduating from Harvard, he went on for a PhD at Stanford University in mechanical engineering before joining WSU in January.

While he conducts his own research, Yoshida is also working to bring others together from the Hawaiian community to develop ideas and solutions.

In recent years, he started Honua Scholars , a non-profit organization that aims to provide mentorship in science and technology for Hawaiians or for those who are underrepresented in those fields of study. Honua, which means Earth in Hawaiian, offers a symposium and funding for student project proposals, including those written in Pacific Islander languages.

The programs aim to increase retention of students in science and technology fields while helping them integrate Hawaii’s culture into their scientific endeavors. 

“A lot of times, our experiences shape the research, and the linguistics shape the thoughts and ideas that occur,” he said. “We’re hoping that these different perspectives can bring another wave of innovation.”
