What is the pay structure of the employees on the Disney cruise?
By JaneHughes , March 8, 2010 in Disney Cruise Line

We have just returned from a Royal Carribean cruise and a few of the staff advised that the majority of their compensation came from tips. Does anyone know if this is the same situation on a Disney cruise?

Our server in the last cruise explained to us that their income is based on the tips just like any other cruise. Being under Bahamas contract, they keep every cent which means that they don't pay any tax at all. Our server also stated that there will be times when they do not receive any tip at all. Many guests do not show up for breakfast and suddenly disappear without leaving them any tip.
I have to believe it is similar to my experience working as a server in a major chain restaurant a few years back.
You get a very small base pay (2.50/hr) and your income is based mostly on a tip. Granted they do also get other perks, probably, free food, board, and great tax laws
I think a great thing is the pre-paid gratuities...on the Disney cruise we took last month we did this. I guess however you still must put the little stub in the envelope and give that to your server or room attendant...they in turn must have to give this to "someone" to get their pay.
We felt the service was worth way more than what we had for the pre-paid tips and added more $'s in each envelope. They all work so hard and truly gave the best service of any line I've sailed on (including Regent).
It depends on the area they are assigned/contracted for. From what I understand, its alot like the parks and college program.
Tip oriented areas such as wait staff, and room stewards, generally get a fairly low base pay, and the balance is made up in tips.As posted above.
Areas such as guest relations,or entertainment get a higher base pay since they do not have a tip oportunity.Other areas that you dont ever see such as laundry personel or cooks would be in the same group.
I think, though I cant swear to it off hand, that Disney may take a certain amount back, for room and board.Much like the college program. They also pay for things like alcohol onboard, and things from a crew only store.
I think some of the recommended tips are ridiculously high. For instance, the stateroom attendant gets $28 per person, so for my family of four that is $112, or $16/day to make a bed and put clean towels and an origami towel animal on the bed. In the best hotels, I tip housekeeping $5/day and they are putting clean sheets on the bed as well. How many rooms does each attendant service? Same with the wait staff...they told me they generally service about 16 people per seating, so 32 total, times $28=$896 a week. Some may tip less, but some also tip more. If that is tax free and they get free room and board, that's a pretty decent salary for a job that doesn't require a college degree.
They work harder than a hotel houskeeper. At a hotel, they'll do your room once per day. On a ship, it's usually twice plus the towel animals, turndown and the frequent guest requests. Knowing people that have worked in both jobs, I know that ship guests use their room a lot more than hotel guests and thus create more work for the staff.
I guess we were the exception then. We spent very little time in our room; we were only there to sleep and get ready for dinner. They came in once to clean up (I don't think they change the sheets daily like they do in a hotel) in the afternoon and a second time to turn down the bed and put the animal in the room. We also cleaned up after ourselves everyday. Maybe we are not the typical guests.

only if every cabins tips the suggested gratuity. Im sure there are many who stiff them:(.
fyi, the stewards (and all employees) pay for their own transport to/from employment on the ship and have families back 'home' to support including medical, food & housing, etc. They do far more than make the beds in the cabins, your bathroom is cleaned everyday. fyi, many of the stewards employ assistants (those who work in other capacities about the ship & are moonlighting) to help them get all the work they are expected to complete done.
One more thing, the way I understand it these people work cruises back to back with little time off. Is that correct? Sorry your cruise on the Magic was not better. We have only been on 1 cruise on the Magic, last year, and it was incredible.:)

Furthermore, the wait staff not only serve guests at dinner, they work the other venues for lunch and breakfast as well - such as the BBQ on Castaway Cay, and the "fast food" places. Your tips pay them for that as well.

Husband used to work for RCI as a waiter. Yes they make about $50 per month w/o tips. They aslo have to pay for thier laundry room cleaning fee, internet, etc. Some people tip the suggested amt some do not and some do not tip at all. There is no off days off. The wait staff may get a breakfast or lunch off but never a day. They work 6 mo contract and pay for thier ticket. The wait staff tips are not pooled but the CS not so sure as on the Magic we had 2 people.

So you had to bring up a thread from 3 years ago to make this comment?

I'm betting MattyPatty was doing a search for something, this thread came up, and he/she didn't realize it was a REALLY OLD thread upon replying.

Not sure what the purpose of this thread is??? No one is being made to work these cruise ships. I'm sure the work is hard and the hours are long, but the employees choose to do it. Many of them are young and do it for the excitement before moving on to other careers and others are making much more money then they could ever make in their home country. It's nice to be concerned for their well being but please stop with the guilt trips.
What I was told was thet they get their money/tips even without the ticket stub. There are records of what was charged to the room for their tip.
I get what you are saying. I used to feel badly for the staff. But when you come across some that have been with DCL for many cruises, I figured if it was that bad they wouldn't renew their contract. They do work very hard though.

If you are sailing concierge they take care of it all for you. You only need to fill out the amounts on the sheet and sign the bottom.
We didn't tip extra on our three day as we only ate in the MDR once for dinner and twice for lunch, never for breakfast. We did tip the servers in Palo and Remy as well as the sommelier in both and room service.
Tonka's Skipper
]There is alot of work behind the scenes they do as well, not to mention bring and taking away your lugage.
Honestly these CM's, all of them work hard, long hours, to give us tha excellent cruise and deserve every penny they get.:D
If you can effort a cruise, you should not be complaining!
This comes up on every cruise line's forum.
Here's the long and short of it. Consider the auto tip part of the fare. If the employees were compensated the same amount as salary, they would have to pay more fees and taxes on it PLUS it would be factored into the cruise fare.
Round numbers:
If employees make $5 per day plus $10 in tips, they earn $15 per day. That means Disney pays 1000 crew $5000 per day for a 3000 passenger ship plus $30000 from the passengers.
If Disney just paid them $15 per day, Disney would pay the full $35000, divided up among 3000 passengers, with a markup to handle taxes and admin, your price per cruise would be about $14 per day higher, MORE than you pay with auto-tip.

On the ship there is no money taken for room and board. Uniforms are provided and cleaned for free. On some lines, all personal laundry is also cleaned for free, others either provide discounted laundry service or a self-serve room for crew. Most lines provide healthcare while on the ship for free, officers and higher level hotel staff (reception, etc.) entertainment, and certain technical services (I/T, A/V, etc.)get health insurance as if they were working for any land based organization.
Items of a personal nature such as Internet, alcohol, toiletries, etc. can be purchased through the crew store which usually has no or minimal mark up.
It all varies by ship and cruise line. Some are pretty notorious for treating their crew like dirt, others are known for taking great care of them. DCL is in the middle.

Re: travel costs for the staff.........a number of DCL staff have told us they pay 50% towards their travel home costs
DCL pays for CMs to get all the way home when their contract ends. Some other cruiselines only pay to nearest airport. And others, not even that much.
Entertainers are on a totally different pay situation than the rest of the boat. My cousin is an Equity performer currently playing Ensign Benson on the Wonder. Her contract is for 9 months (1 month was for rehersals in Toranto- where she had her own 1 bedroom apartment overlooking CN Tower) Disney has paid for all her airfare (from NYC to Toronto, Toronto to LA, and from Miami to whereever she decided to go in May). She lives in a room alone with a porthole. She doesn't pay for any room/board/or laundry. (she does pay for internet access). She started making $900 a week, but now she is up to $1200- plus some bonuses for sticking out the contract for certain times (a bonus after the first 6 weeks, etc).

We are crusting on the magic next month. This will be our first time on the magic after 7 times on the Wonder and once on the Fantasy. The last 3 times on the Wonder we had Phapakorn as an assistant server (2 twice with Svetlana and once with Dan). We had a great experience with those teams (much less so with the team on the fantasy). Is DCL getting a lot of the same servers back (after covid) or have they been hiring new staff? I'm just curious what to expect and if the crews have been as good as they used to be?
Earning My Ears
My favorite server, Matthew is on the Magic right now! He is amazing.
DIS Veteran
The servers that we had on the Dream back in September weren't new at all. It seems like Disney was able to bring a lot of old staff back.
Our server on the Magic last week was experienced with previous cruises. The assistant server was at the end of her first contract. Our favorite server from India who had been on the Magic for years was not onboard. We met another server from India, who said he was on the Fantasy. This summer many of the Indian crew could not get the UK for the sailings due to Covid restrictions.
- Jan 30, 2022
I asked the servers both on Celebrity and Disney about this. Celebrity was hiring Indian staff because they could get longer visas and giving them longer contracts. As of Christmas, Disney was giving their staff shorter contracts and rotating in as much of the old staff as they could. Our Fantasy staff were mostly from Phillipines. Both were US sailings.
CaptainAmerica
Branel on the Magic was fantastic in December. I think he has something like 20 years with DCL .
Our main server on the Fantasy this month was Yanupa from the Philippines who had been with DCL for over 10 years!!
This will be my greatest performance!
- Feb 3, 2022
We talked to our dining team about that on Fantasy in Jan. The head server was also a dining room manager and was very open about it. He said that a lot of the old staff pre-Plague had come back and they had been distributed among the fleet to be the experienced team that trained / mentored / worked with the newer team. He also mentioned that a lot of the senior team members will be sent to Wish (at least for the opening cruises) to ensure that the ship get set up correctly and they have experienced folks there as well. A lot of the staff is mixed in their feelings about that - the regular crew is OK with it, but the dining and stateroom teams not as much, as they will do numerous "shakedown" cruises with no passengers, thus no tips. That said, we saw several crew on Fantasy that we knew from both Wonder and Magic, so they're all over the place!

A lot of servers have come back, some have only recently been called back since the start of the year. Because of the phasing of return and visa restrictions (many couldn’t renew their visas due to embassy’s not processing them for almost 2 years) crew have been moved around on ships - quite a few from the magic are on the dream at the moment. Before the pandemic a lot of crew decided to leave and quite a few now work for Virgin Cruise Line.
Our favorite server, Mirka, is now on the Wonder and has moved up to Palo.

Has anyone seen Dejan, might be from Bosnia?, (who was on the Fantasy) or Omar from Jamaica and Jesus(from India), both of whom were on the Magic, since sailing resumed?

FAQ Tipping on Disney Cruise Line: EVERYTHING You Need to Know
First time Disney Cruisers often have A LOT of questions about how to tip on their vacation. Some guests get overwhelmed, thinking – this is new environment to me – I don’t want to seem cheap, but I also don’t want to get rooked. Which tips are required and which are optional? How does tipping physically work? And on and on and on … Never fear, we’ve got the COMPLETE scoop on what you need to know about tipping on your Disney Cruise Line sailing.
I’m on a strict budget. What’s the bare minimum I have to tip?
The bare bones Disney Cruise Line gratuity amount is currently $14.50, per person, per night, for guests staying in non-concierge staterooms.
If, for example, you’re traveling on a three-night cruise with a party of two, your total gratuity fee would be $87 ($14.50 x 2 people x 3 nights). If you’re traveling on a seven-night cruise with a party of four, your total gratuity fee would be $407 ($14.50 x 4 people x 7 nights).
This baseline amounts will be automatically added to your stateroom bill. You can choose to pay them in advance of your sailing or once you’re onboard.
If you’re having trouble figuring out what your party’s baseline tip amount will be, head over Scott Sanders’ excellent Disney Cruise Line Blog to use his DCL Tip Calculator tool .
If you’re sailing in a concierge stateroom, tipping is slightly different – I’ll cover that in a sec.
Who do those tips go to?
The breakout of the daily $14.50 is:
- $4.75 for your server (your main waiter)
- $3.75 for your assistant server (the waiter primarily tasked with your beverages and clearing)
- $1.25 for your head server (runs the dining room)
- $4.75 for your stateroom host (cleans and maintains your stateroom).
There are other situations where you’ll be tipping on the ship, the base gratuity covers these four people.
Do I really have to tip all those people? I mean, I don’t even know what the head server does?
The server, assistant server, and stateroom host are people that will be highly visible during your trip. They’ll assist you daily and you’ll observe them doing their jobs.
On the other hand, the head server position is a bit of a black box. They will likely stop by your table to greet you during dinner, but otherwise it’s not immediately clear what they do to merit a gratuity. Here’s what they’re up to: the head server is responsible for making sure that the entire dining room runs smoothly. This will impact you personally if you’ve made any special requests about your meal situation. If you want your table in a specific location, if you want to avoid sitting with strangers, if you want to make a mid-cruise change to your dining rotation, or if you’re having a problem with your table’s serving team, then the head server is the one who deals with those issues. You should tip them.
I’m from a country that doesn’t have a tipping culture, can I forgo tipping?
Can you? Maybe. (see below)
Should you? Definitely not.
The Disney Cruise Line website reads, “It is customary to give gratuities …” Tipping is the norm and you should be prepared to abide by this custom.
The DCL crew members in tipped positions have a modest base salary; the majority of their pay comes from gratuities. These folks work incredibly hard to enhance your cruise experience, with no days off for months at a time. Just pretend that it’s part of the baseline cost of your trip and move on.
I’m traveling with a baby that doesn’t eat solid food. Do I still have to pay gratuities for them?
A baby is a person, so yes.
I see that I can pre-pay these gratuities ahead of my cruise. Should I do that?
It’s really up to you. Some guests prefer to have a larger portion of their cruise expense paid in advance, often because this helps their budgeting process. Other guests like to hang onto their money as long as possible and only mete it out when required.
You can prepay tips on the DCL website. Or if you’re using a travel agent, they can do this for you.
Do I have to tip the serving team members if I won’t be eating in the main dining rooms?
Several years ago I traveled on a three-night Disney Cruise Line with a group of friends. One member of our party never ate in a main dining room. She was ill one evening and ate in her room and the other two nights our party ate at Remy and Palo.
Since my friend didn’t use the services of any of the main dining room staff, she went to Guest Services and asked to have the gratuities for those folks removed from her bill. The cruise staff gave her some solid pushback, but in the end they did remove those tips from her folio.
Why did she get pushback? It turns out that the waitstaff does much more than serve you dinner. They’re also serving meals at the pool deck buffet restaurants, in the main dining rooms during breakfast or lunch, and on Castaway Cay. In short, even if you’re not eating dinner in the main dining rooms, you’re all but certain to be using waiter services during other portions of your trip.
And again, these folks don’t make a lot of money. If you have the wherewithal to take a Disney Cruise Line vacation, the addition of a de minimus tip will mean significantly more to them than it will to you.
I love my serving team and room host. Can I tip them more that the minimum? Should I tip them more than the minimum?
If you have the funds to do so and the spirit moves you, then yes, absolutely you should tip them more. Any additional gratuities are greatly appreciated by the cruise staff.
How much extra should I tip beloved ship crew?
Ask a thousand people and you’ll get a thousand different answers. And when you get those answers, you can’t 100% be sure that what they’ve told you is true.
Given that, I’ll describe some of my own “extra tip” scenarios as well as some that I’ve seen from trusted friends and relatives:
- Extra just wasn’t in the budget
- The serving team was good but did nothing that merited a supplement
- We skipped the main dining room several nights
- We gave an extra $X per person, per night, where X is anything from $5 to $20+
- We gave one member of our team (such as just the stateroom host) an extra tip (say $100) because they made our trip extra special
- We gave all members of our a flat extra tip because we like to be generous
- We give extra on longer sailings (7+ nights) when we really get to know our serving team, but we don’t give extra on quick 3-night sailings when we interact less with the crew members
If I want to tip extra, do I need to bring cash?
If you simply want to give extra to your four main service team members (the ones listed above) you can do that in cash. Or if you prefer not to carry much cash, you can stop by the Guest Services Desk onboard at any time and add funds to the gratuity part of your bill. Either way works.
There are, however, some other tipping situations where you will want to have cash on hand (see below).
How do tip my servers/room host? Physically, what happens?
On one of the last nights of your sailing, your stateroom host will leave you four small envelopes (labeled Server, Assistant Server, Head Server, and Stateroom Host) along with a tan-colored paper (perforated into four sections) which gives the names of your service team members and the basic tip amounts. But there are no instructions on what you’re supposed to do with these items. Guests often find this confusing.
The easiest situation is that you’re giving the baseline tip level. If you’re just giving the recommended amount, you don’t really have to do anything. Your folio (cruise bill) will be billed the standard amount (or you’ve paid the standard amount in advance) and that amount will be automatically distributed to your crew team. You can keep the summary sheet for your records or throw it out.
Other ways to approach tipping are:
- If you plan to give your crew members the standard gratuities but think it feels weird to leave on the last day without handing them anything – Place the perforated strips from the summary sheet into the corresponding envelopes and hand them to the crew members on the last night of your sailing.
- Place cash in the envelope(s) and hand them to your team on the last night of your cruise
- Place both the perforated strip and additional cash in the envelope(s) and hand them to your team on the last night of your cruise
- Add a gift card to the envelope(s) rather than cash. Some guests feel uncomfortable carrying cash and don’t want to deal with possible waits at Guest Services, but they do want to give something extra of financial value. We’ll say up front that crew members very much prefer cash, it’s easy to use in ports and to send to family members back home. But if cash is not your thing, Visa or American Express gift cards or store cards from big box locations such as Target or Walmart often appreciated.
- Do any of the above and add a personal note of thanks .
Do I tip bartenders on the ship?
Bar tabs (at the coffee bars and at the traditional bars) on the Disney Cruise Line ships have an automatic 18% gratuity added. There is also a line for you to add an additional tip if you choose to give more.
Do I tip for room service?
Many of the room servic e items on DCL are available free of charge. A gratuity is optional for most room service orders; however, tipping is polite and greatly appreciated. The amount you tip is at your discretion. If you’re looking for a rule of thumb, start with $1 per item ordered or $2-3 per person and go up from there.
On a recent cruise on the Dream, my daughter and I ordered room service continental breakfast of coffee, fruit, and cereal. We tipped $5.
You can give the room service attendant cash or add a tip to the receipt you’ll get when your food is delivered.
How much should I tip at the onboard adult dining venues (Remy, Palo, Enchanté)?
There is an 18% gratuity automatically added to the price of any alcohol you purchase at the onboard adult dining venues (Remy, Enchanté, and Palo).
There is no specific amount you’re required to tip for food. That said, at a bare minimum you should tip at least 20% for the food bill. If you’re a Platinum cruiser and are getting your food comped, you should still tip at least 20% of what your food cost would have been.
My opinion only – you do you – I don’t think that bare minimum level of tipping is adequate for the impeccable service you’re getting at these restaurants. You can never go wrong by tipping more.
You can add tips to your bill at the end of your meal as you would if you were paying with a credit card at any restaurant on land.
How much should I tip at the spa?
Tipping is customary for spa and salon services. You’ll see an 18% gratuity added to your bill, but you can always add more.
Are there people I need to tip at my port?
Yes. There are porters who will take any checked luggage onto the ship for you. These folks should be tipped in cash. A typical tip is $5 for one or two suitcases, $10 for two or three suitcases, and additional multiples of that for additional bags.
Similarly, if you use the porters at disembarkation, tip them the same amounts.
And if you’ve used a car service, Uber, or bus to get to/from the port, your driver will likely need tips as well.
Should I be tipping anyone during my onshore excursions?
Most of the shore excursions are run by third party companies, not by Disney itself. The DCL website says that tipping is not required, but it is ALWAYS appreciated. Use your discretion on how much to tip based on the length of your excursion, the number of people in your party and the level of personal attention you receive.
I’m in a concierge level stateroom? Is there anything different about tipping there?
In July 2022, DCL updated its recommended baseline tips for guests staying in Concierge Level staterooms. The recommended gratuity is $15.50 per person, per night of sailing, compared to $14.50 for non-Concierge rooms. The difference is that these rooms have an Assistant Stateroom Host position tipped at $1.00 per person per night.
The breakdown is:
- Dining Room Server – $4.75 per person, per night
- Assistant Dining Room Server – $3.75 per person, per night
- Dining Room Head Server – $1.25 per person, per night
- Stateroom Host – $4.75 per person, per night
- Assistant Stateroom Host – $1.00 per person, per night
Additionally, Concierge Guests often ask for guidance regarding gratuities for the Concierge Lounge Team (Concierge Managers and the Concierge Servers). Disney recommends that these folks receive a gratuity amount of $8.00 per night, per stateroom guest. However, it is always up to the Guest to determine what they feel is appropriate. MANY guests tip more than this baseline.
My child absolutely adores the youth activities team. Should I tip them?
Youth activities staff are not normally tipped. Indeed, they’re supposed to decline tips. That said, they are allowed to accept cash, gift cards, and small gifts if you insist three times. Adding a note written/colored by your child is a nice touch.
Are there other folks on the ship I should be tipping?
If you’re lucky enough to snag a cabana at Castaway Cay, you’ll be attended by a host who’ll bring you extra towels or sodas, give you a golf cart ride back to the ship, and generally make your life nicer. Tip these folks in cash depending on the size of your party and the level of attention you receive.
Any other helpful hints?
If you really care about your crew team, the best thing you can do to reward them is by giving them EXCELLENT (not Very Good) ratings on the comment card you’ll get on your last night onboard. These ratings are a big part of how crew members get promoted.
Also, some guests like to bring candy, American magazines, or trinkets from home to give to cruise staff. This is a nice thought, but not necessarily best practice. The crew rooms are extremely small (you’d be shocked how tiny) shared quarters. They don’t have much room for extra “stuff.” Additionally, they might have allergies or different tastes than yours. Cash really is best and gift cards are a runner up. If you want to give something else, consider it as a supplement to a gratuity and not a substitute.

Quote “Disney recommends that these folks receive a gratuity amount of $8.00 per night, per stateroom guest. However, it is always up to the Guest to determine what they feel is appropriate. MANY guests tip more than this baseline.”.
My questions are: 1. How do you define “MANY”? 2. How do you know there are MANY? Any statistics revealed back up this statement?
“Many” is a rough guess that about 50-60% of guests give more than the suggested amount. I don’t have any hard statistics. However, we interview guests and travel agents and monitor dozens of social media groups related to Disney Cruise Line. The tipping topic comes up often. More than 50% of guests that we see/read mention tipping more than the baseline. It’s self-reported, so some of this could be bluster, but it’s enough that we feel confident that a significant subset of guests give more than the standard tip. It is, of course, entirely up to you to decide what makes sense for your situation.
Sorry – forgot the second half of your question @Julie. If you’ve purchased a Rainforest pass and are just going in to use the shower and steam rooms and relax in the lounge area, then no, there’s not really anyone to tip.
However, if you have a particularly helpful cast member who brings you extra towels or beverages or otherwise goes above and beyond, then tipping them a few dollars cash is always nice.
I thought I heard somewhere that you can tip for room service in the app. Is this true? Also, would you tip for using the Rainforest Room? If so, who would you tip?
Room service tipping on the app was something that happened early in the return to sailing after the pandemic shutdown as a way to reduce physical contact with items.
I sailed four time on three DCL ships (Dream, Magic, and Wish) in 2022. Room service tipping on the app was not offered to me on any of these trips. Instead I was presented with a paper receipt to sign, with a line available to add a tip amount, just as the practice was pre-COVID.
Great article as always.
Some items we would also add. We bring a bag of individually wrapped candies (like star burst or smarties) for the kids club hosts. They use them for team building and prizes for the department.
You can also tip just about any person on the ship as well. If you can get their name, where they are from, and what department (it helps) you can go to guest services. We found that out during our last cruise.

How much does a Disney cruise really cost?
Editor's Note
Disney Cruise Line is known for its family-friendly cruises complete with all of your favorite Disney characters, impeccable dining, exciting entertainment and thrilling ports of call. With everything that's included on the sailings, you might be wondering how much a Disney cruise costs — and if you can afford one.
Cruises with Mickey Mouse and his pals range in price depending on many factors such as the embarkation port and destination, departure date, length of the cruise and cabin type you book. No matter which cruise you book, it will be pricey, like any Disney vacation. You'll have to determine what value you put on experiencing the "magic" of Disney.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
To me, it's worth a lot. I've experienced all five ships in the Disney fleet and have sailed seven times to destinations around the Caribbean and the Mediterranean .
Here, I'm sharing how much a Disney cruise costs per ship and itinerary, any extras that are worth the additional fees and how to save money on a Disney cruise.
How much does it cost to go on a Disney cruise?
Let's be honest: A cruise on any Disney ship isn't cheap. Factors like cabin type and category, sail date, destination, length of cruise, traveling party size and if you're on a themed cruise can impact the overall cost. If you're trying to keep your costs lower, your best option is to pick a cruise on an older ship (Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy) or pick a shorter cruise length.
The cheapest Disney cruise we found cost $1,000 for an inside cabin for two people on a two-night sailing on Disney Wonder in Australia. That's $250 per person per night.
If you're looking for a cheap Caribbean or Bahamian sailing, consider a three-night Bahamas cruise on Disney Magic starting at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people. This also equates to $250 per person per day. Add in drinks, specialty dining, souvenirs and other expenses, and you can expect to spend around $2,500 in total.
On a recent sailing on the Disney Dream , my family of three and I spent five nights at sea in a balcony room and paid a grand total of $4,514.06. This total included everything from the cruise fare and pre-night hotel stay to parking and spa services.
Some examples of starting prices for each ship and its major itineraries for an inside cabin or a balcony cabin are listed below so you can get a sense of pricing across the fleet. Prices are based on double occupancy.
Disney Magic
One- to three-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,500 to $2,500; balcony cabins, $1,900 to $3,300 Four-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,800 to $3,200; balcony cabins, $2,300 to $4,000 Five- to six-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,200 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,000 to $6,600 Seven-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $2,700 to $3,300; balcony cabins, $3,800 to $4,900

Where do Disney cruises sail from?
Disney Cruises depart from 15 different ports around the world, but the major ones to think about from the U.S. include:
- Fort Lauderdale
- Port Canaveral, Florida
- Galveston, Texas
- New Orleans
The major international ports Disney Cruise Line sets sail from include:
- Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
- Melbourne, Australia
- Southampton, England
- Brisbane, Australia
- Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada
Depending on the cruise you pick, getting to and from the home port can be easy or take a little longer — and that can impact the total cost of your Disney cruise.
For instance, many people drive to Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral if they already live in the southern U.S. Driving can save money versus flying, and you might not have to stay in a pre-cruise hotel if you can drive right to the port.
You will have to pay to park at the port or at a third-party parking lot. While the off-site parking lots are often cheaper, you will need to think about how to get to and from the ship, tipping the porter or driver, plus the added time to get from your car to the ship.
On the other hand, if you are taking a cruise from an international destination or flying to a domestic home port, your costs automatically go up because of flights for your family, a pre-cruise hotel, meals before the sailing, and transportation to the ship and back to the airport.

What's included in the price of a Disney cruise?
You might pay a lot for a Disney cruise, but you get a lot for your money. The cost of a Disney cruise covers your onboard dining and most nonalcoholic drinks, an abundance of entertainment for kids and adults, onboard activities and transportation between cruise ports. Even most entertainment and food on Disney's private island Castaway Cay (and upcoming private island destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point) is part of the fare.

Most of the entertainment on board is included in the overall cost of your sailing. On your cruise, you can experience Broadway-quality shows inside the Walt Disney Theater, watch first-run movies from Disney's production companies (like Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars), listen to live music and participate in game shows in the adults-only lounges. Most itineraries feature a deck party with a fireworks show.
Kids can meet and play with their favorite Disney characters and participate in activities like karaoke. Family-friendly sun decks with pools, waterslides, splash zones and wading pools are also included in the cost.
Disney Cruise Line is known for its rotational dining evening dinner service. Families rotate through three onboard restaurants throughout the sailing, and your service team moves with you. Each of the rotational dining options is included in your cruise fare. One of the restaurants will be open for drop-in, sit-down meals during breakfast and lunch as well. Complimentary room service is available 24 hours a day.
On the upper decks, quick-service food stations, soft-serve ice cream and a buffet are available. Every Disney cruise also includes unlimited coffee, tea and soda.
Accommodations
Almost every cabin across the Disney fleet features Disney's distinctive split bathroom concept. One of the bathrooms has a vanity, sink and tub-shower, plus another bathroom with a vanity, sink and toilet. Each room also has a small refrigerator, safe and hair dryer.
Every child ages 3 to 17 will have access to Disney's kids clubs on board. Youngsters ages 3-10 can enjoy Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab . Tweens ages 11-14 have access to Edge, and teens ages 14-17 can chill out in Vibe.
Each kids club has dedicated counselors and a host of activities every day. The best way to see the list of activities is to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and scroll through the daily agenda. You can flag activities your kids want to attend, so you can get to the kids clubs before they start.
Adult-exclusive activities
Disney cruises are packed with family-friendly programming, but adults can find spaces and events geared just for them in the adult-only nightclubs and lounges on board. Live music, interactive games and shows are only some of the nightly activities.
Additionally, adults have a dedicated pool and hot tub area that includes a bar and coffee shop. (Drinks cost extra, but access is free). For those looking to stay fit while onboard, access to the fitness center is also included.
Castaway Cay
On most Bahamas and Caribbean sailings, you'll stop at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . At the island, your family can enjoy the family beach or adult-exclusive beach (for those 18 and older).
Use of towels, beach chairs and shade umbrellas are complimentary, as are waterslides and splash zones. Live music and character appearances take place around the island. Kids and teen club activities are available on Castaway Cay — again, at no extra charge. Runners can participate in the Castaway Cay 5K and get a finisher medal.
When it's time to eat, three spots serve an included barbecue lunch, complete with soft-serve ice cream. Coffee, tea and fountain drinks are also included at Castaway Cay.
To get around the island, you can walk or use the complimentary trams.

Are there any extra Disney costs?
Even though many activities, dining options and entertainment are included in the cost of your cruise, you will find things to pay extra for on a Disney cruise. These may or may not be worth it for your family, depending on your budget and interests. Below is a list of things not included in your overall cruise fare.
Some of the cutest Disney activities are also ones that cost extra. Kids who want more time with the Disney characters might be interested in the Royal Court Royal Tea — a tea party with characters for kids ages 3 to 12. According to planDisney (Disney's online resource for vacation-planning tips) , the cost is $220 per child and $69 for anyone 13 and up. Each tea party includes a selection of tea and a two-course meal; every child gets an assortment of gifts.
Kids can also play dress-up and get a full regal or pirate (only available on Pirate Party Nights) makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, found on every Disney ship. Depending on the package you booked for your child, expect to pay $100 to $450 for each makeover.
Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy both have a virtual sports simulator that requires a reservation and a fee. You can play various sports, from football to golf, for either 30- or 60-minute time blocks. Cost varies based on time, sport and number of people playing.
Specialty dining and cocktails
Four specialty dining restaurants are offered across the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Exclusive to Disney Wish (and coming soon to Disney Treasure ) are Enchante and Palo Steakhouse. Expect to pay $60 to $205 plus an 18% auto-gratuity for a meal at Enchante; Palo Steakhouse is $50 for a prix-fixe meal, but an a la carte menu is also available.
On the four other Disney Cruise Line ships, Palo is also $50 for prix-fixe and offers an a la carte menu. An 18% auto-gratuity is also tacked onto your bill.
On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, Remy is also available, with the dessert experience starting at $65 without the 18% auto-gratuity, while brunch and dinner are $80 and $135 respectively, plus an additional 18% auto-gratuity.
On all ships, themed bars and lounges sling drinks. Because there's no drink package available through Disney Cruise Line, you will have to pay for each drink individually. The planDisney panel says the average drink can range from $6 to $20.
If you're looking for specialty coffee, tea or hot chocolate drinks, look for the Cove Cafe on all ships; there are also specialty counters off of the atrium on Disney Dream, Fantasy and Wish. These drinks cost anywhere from $5 to $8, depending on your order. You can also order alcoholic drinks from the coffee bars, which run the typical cocktail prices.
Outside the Walt Disney Theater or near the movie theaters on board each ship, you'll also smell the buttery goodness of freshly popped popcorn. You can buy the popcorn for an added fee to take into the shows with you. Additionally, there are some specialty popcorn buckets available for purchase on each ship; you can refill them for a discounted price every time you want to munch on the salty snack. (Specialty buckets purchased off the ships at a Disney resort or theme park are not eligible for a discounted popcorn refill.)
Additionally, each ship offers beverage-tasting seminars where you can learn how to make and taste a variety of cocktails in a given category. Seminars can range from $40 to $70 and last about an hour.
While crew gratuities on Disney Cruise Line are not included in the overall cost, some can be prepaid before you step onboard. These include gratuities to your dining room server, assistant server and head server, plus your cabin host. Disney recommends a gratuity of $14.50 per night per person, including infants and children in regular cabins. It's recommended that those in concierge cabins and suites pay $15.50, with the extra going to your cabin assistant host.
Gratuities that are not included can be paid on board. Such gratuities include anything extra you would like to give to your service team, tips on alcoholic beverages in the dining room, adult dining locations, room service and the spa. The concierge lounge team is also not included in prepaid gratuities for concierge guests, and Disney recommends $8 per night per guest.
Keep in mind that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs across the ship and for spa services. To make it easy while on the ship, you can charge all your gratuities to your onboard account.
If you want to bring something home from your trip — whether from a port of call or from the onboard shops — you'll want to budget for that extra cost. Souvenirs off the ship can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on what you buy. Be prepared that some shops will only take local currency; purchases at Castaway Cay shops will be charged to your onboard account.
On the ship, easy-to-transport souvenirs included trading pins, magnets and apparel. These can range anywhere from $20 to $75. Other more expensive onboard souvenirs include jewelry, luxury brand purses and wallets, and art.

How do I save money on a Disney cruise?
If you're reeling from sticker shock, know you can find many ways to save money on a Disney cruise. Here are a few of my favorite money-saving tips.
Letting Disney choose your cabin can be a great way to get a deal on the cruise. These are known as guaranteed rates, and they are the cheapest fares in each category. All you have to do is pick your room type, such as inside, ocean view or balcony, and Disney picks which specific room number you get. This works best if you don't care where your room is on the ship.
If you're looking for a room upgrade , but that's not a make-it-or-break-it deal for your family, consider waiting to upgrade your room until you get to the port. If your cruise still has rooms available, you can ask at check-in about a room upgrade for a discount. The cost will be relative to the room type you originally booked and the room type you want to upgrade to. Sometimes, you can even upgrade to a concierge room or a suite, but you will need to get an early port arrival time to potentially score one of those upgrades.
Disney Cruise Line has one of the most generous alcohol policies of any big-ship cruise brand. At the start of your cruise, you can bring up to six cans of beer or two bottles of wine per person over 21 years old. Then, at each port, you can restock and bring the same alcohol allotment per person over 21 onto the ship to store in your room and enjoy. You might find that beer and wine are cheaper in port than on board — a smart way to save on your drinking expenses.

Are Disney cruises cheaper or more expensive than other cruise lines?
Other family-friendly cruise brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. While all of the family-friendly brands have pros and cons, picking the right one for your family can come down to a matter of cost. Disney is almost always the most expensive.
For example, we priced out a three-night weekend cruise departing on the same dates for Disney Wish and Royal Caribbean 's soon-to-debut Utopia of the Seas. We found that Disney was almost $500 more expensive for the same weekend, cabin type and length of sailing. Utopia of the Seas came out to $2,850.10 for two people staying in a balcony cabin, while the Disney Wish cruise, also in a balcony room, cost $3,337.20.
What Disney does best — and why many people choose to cruise with the brand — is it provides a high level of service to families, even those in the least expensive cabins. The crew on Disney ships goes above and beyond to make your vacation easy. I've seen everything from dining staff cutting kids' food and taking children to the bathroom to room hosts ensuring parents know about the parental locks on balcony doors (so kids can't just wander outside without an adult).
The extra amenities that Disney offers — such as Broadway-quality shows, character experiences and larger standard cabins — all bring the overall cruise cost up.
Disney also has a smaller fleet than all its family-friendly competitors, meaning there is less cabin inventory to sell. Plus, its ships generally carry fewer passengers. For example, Disney Wish, Disney's biggest ship, carries 4,000 people at full capacity; Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas can carry 7,600 guests at capacity. The low inventory combined with the high demand for Disney cruises means that Disney can charge higher fares and still fill ships.
Bottom line
Cruise fares with Disney can change based on factors like room type, travel party size and sailing date. The minimum price you can expect to pay for a cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas starts at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people on Disney Magic.
Disney Cruise Line includes a variety of dining experiences (including room service), soda, character meet-and-greets and Broadway-caliber entertainment in its fares; it also allows passengers to bring alcohol on board in every port of call. For these reasons, you don't necessarily have to spend much on board to have a fantastic vacation. The cruise can be a good value depending on the extras you choose to add.
The real question is whether you want to spend more on the base cruise fare to immerse yourself in the world of Disney versus paying less for another family-friendly cruise line.

Gratuities on the Disney Cruise Line Explained
Let’s talk gratuities…
The service on Disney Cruise Line is exceptional. Each and every cast and crew member make you feel like you are the most important person on the ship. They go above and beyond what you could even imagine.
Gratuities (additional monies) are a way to say thank you. It is customary to give gratuities in recognition of exceptional service. All gratuities are technically optional, but all cruisers should know that paying gratuities for four (4) specific crew members is considered customary (more on this below).
As is the case with many service-based jobs, these crew members are paid by the cruise line under the idea that a large portion of their income will come from guest gratuities. But because of this, Disney automatically charges you the gratuities. It’s considered “good form” to reward them for the service they provide.
How is gratuity calculated?
There are four (4) specific crew members where it is considered customary to leave gratuities: Dining Room Server, Dining Room Assistant Server, Dining Room Head Server, and Stateroom Host/Hostess. I will explain each below.
The amount is calculated per person for everyone in your stateroom. If you have 4 people in your stateroom the rate would be x 4 regardless of age (babies included).
Dining Room Server: This person is with you at every dinner service and they follow you to each of your restaurants (in your dining rotation). This person is responsible for your meal. Their gratuity is $4.50 per night per person. So, for a 7-night cruise for 1 person, it calculates to $31.50. For a family of 4, your total would be $126.
Dining Room Assistant Server: This person is with you at every dinner service and they follow you to each of your restaurants (in your dining rotation). This person is responsible for your beverages and assisting the server in anything that supports providing a great experience during dinner for the guests. Their gratuity is $3.50 per night per person. So, for a 7-night cruise for 1 person, it calculates to $24.50. For a family of 4, your total would be $98.
Dining Room Head server: This person is responsible for your entire dining experience. Their gratuity is $1 per night per person. So, for a 7-night cruise for 1 person, it calculates to $7. For a family of 4, your total would be $28.
Stateroom Host/Hostess: This is the person that takes care of your stateroom. They keep it clean and tidy and perform turndown service each night (and make awesome towel art!). They are always around the halls asking how your day is going and what else you may need. Their gratuity is $4.50 per night per person. So, for a 7-night cruise for 1 person, it calculates to $31.50. For a family of 4, your total would be $126.
Total gratuities that are either prepaid or added on to your stateroom bill is $ 13.50 per person, per night. So, for a family of 4 on a 7-night cruise, your total would be $ 378.
How do you pay gratuities for these four (4) crew members?
You can pre-pay the suggested gratuity amount in advance no later than 3 days before your cruise begins. Let your travel agent know if you would like to add these on ahead of time.
If you do not prepay the gratuities, they will automatically be added to your onboard account prior to the end of your cruise.
Of course, you may elect to change the amounts by going to Guest Services on the ship, located on Deck 3, Midship. You can also pay the gratuities in cash at Guest Services.
Other gratuities that are automatically included:
A 15% gratuity is automatically added to bar, beverage, wine, and deck service tabs. You can add more if you so choose. Senses Spa & Salon: An 18% gratuity will automatically be applied to all spa services. You can add more if you so choose.
Optional gratuities?
For the following crew members, it is optional to give gratuities: Dining Manager, Room Service, Palo, Remy (you should pay gratuities when settling your bill at the end of the meal in the same manner as you would at any restaurant.), and bartenders. If you are staying Concierge level your team will not be included in the pre-paying service but they will accept tips on board.
Port Adventures: Gratuities are optional and are not included in Port Adventures price. For Babysitting, gratuities are not expected.
What if my service is amazing and I decide that I want to give more?
You can always give in addition to the pre-payed amounts. On the 2nd to last night of your cruise, you will get a print out that shows suggested gratuities that have been added to your account or prepaid. There will also be 4 little envelopes that you can put extra money in and personally deliver to the crew member or leave in your room and it will be given to them. This is just a little extra to brighten their day after the excellent service they provided.
What if I’m unhappy with my service, do I still have to pay gratuities?
Disney is renowned for its Customer Service but if for whatever reason you are unsatisfied, please speak to a Cast Member first who will work hard to correct your concerns. Waiting until the end of the cruise and then withholding gratuities will not improve your service experience.
Nothing is more frustrating for the crew member or the cruise line to find out after the fact (when it’s too late to fix) that there was a problem. You will be happier to have the issue resolved while you are still enjoying your cruise.
However, should you decide that you want to make an adjustment to your pre-paid gratuities, you should speak with the Guest Services Team aboard the ship.
Happy Cruising!
