Hwange Horse Safaris:  Our View

Ride and Walk Zimbabwe (RAW) have put together a fine offering of horse riding safari options in the Hwange National Park.  For the horse riding enthusiast there can be no better way to view the big five in their natural habitat but from the back of a well trained sure-footed horse.  The riding options range from a few hours riding to multi-day camp to camp trails. There are also short 1 hour trail rides available for children and less experienced riders, and these rides can be arranged from your Hwange accommodation provided you are staying at one of the lodges/camps in the north-eastern side of the Park.

On the multi day riding safaris based out of Vintage Camp, there are also other activities available to combine with the riding, including day and night game drives, walking, pan sits and much more, making it easy for a family or group of riders and non-riders to enjoy their safari stay equally.  Vintage Camp has only 4 twin/double en suite tents, and as its name suggests, is a lovely little camp boasting a glamorous take on a bygone era of classical explorer type accommodation, completely eco friendly and off-grid.

Multi day rides are also available combining Vintage Camp with Bomani Lodge which lies further to the south east of Vintage. The Vintage and Imvelo Combined Horse Safari allows you to experience two dramatically different but equally breathtaking areas of one of the last true unfenced wildernesses of Africa.

This ride begins in the East of the park in true vintage explorer style before heading down to the South where you get to ride on the famous Ngamo Plains. Again, there are a range of activities to enhance you horseback adventure such as game drives both day and night, walking safaris, bird-watching, community and conservation tours and the highlight for most guests is the Elephant Express Railcar which transfers you from the East to the South of the park.

Hwange Horse Safaris: Quick Facts

  • Wide range of safari options available from 1 to 8 day itineraries
  • En suite accommodation on an all-inclusive basis including all meals, drinks and all various activities
  • Suitable for riders and non-riders travelling together
  • Al fresco dining
  • In-house spa at Camelthorn Lodge (next door to Bomani Lodge) (additional charges)
  • Elephant Express train transfers – a very novel experience!

Please note that this is a sample itinerary to give you an idea of what to expect on safari. Daily rides and activities may vary depending on a number of factors such as game movements and weather. These changes are at the professional discretion of your guide in order to provide the most beneficial safari experience.

Your road transfer departs VFA at 14h30 - – please note this is an outsourced, shared transfer. On arrival at HMC you will meet your Guide and the fun begins! Transfers from all locations in Zimbabwe can be arranged but we highly recommend arriving from Victoria Falls via road transfer or charter flight to Hwange Main Airport.

After the usual formalities of checking in, guests will be taken on a game drive to sample the splendour of Hwange as we transfer to the riding camp. After a quick but delicious afternoon tea it is time for an important safety briefing followed by an introduction ride. This is a short ride to get partnered with your steed for the safari and to ensure you are comfortable with your tack.

We will be back in camp in time for sundowners and hot showers before enjoying a sumptuous 3 course meal cooked by our talented Safari Chef. Fantastic food and delicious wine enjoyed to the night sounds of the African wilderness. Listen carefully, you never know what you might hear. The distant yowl of a Black-backed Jackal, the sawing grunt of Leopard stealthily walking by or perhaps the click clicks of a big bull Eland giving away his aging joints. The bush is never quiet!

Retire to your tent and slumber the night away in your comfy warm cot, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the African Bush.

This morning will be heralded in quite early by the gentle knock knock on your tent by our early rising staff placing hot water in your hand basin. Tea and freshly ground coffee, as well as a light breakfast awaits you by the morning campfire. Being part of the Kalahari Desert system Hwange temperatures can drop quite low during the evening and early morning during our winter May through August.

After a quick breakfast we mount our waiting steeds and ride off into the wilderness exploring the area around Caterpillar Pan. There are no set routes or paths that we have to follow, which allows us the luxury to explore an area seldom marked by hoof beats and to truly be in tune with nature as we ride according to the weather, wildlife movements and riding abilities of the group, Every day is an exploration as we don’t follow the same well-trodden path left behind after many other horses, there simply are no other horses using the area!

We can expect 3 to 4 hours of riding perhaps following ancient elephant trails that wind their way through the bush linking up pan to pan. As we ride along, we will stop, look and learn about the intricacies of the wild African Bush, how every blade of grass, every leaf, every root and every tree have an important part to play in the delicate Circle of Life.

We will arrive back in camp for a refreshing lunch and siesta (compulsory in the bush with all the early starts!) and then later on tea and coffee and a yummy treat - you are on holiday after all - to revive you from your snooze and off to meet the horses again. This afternoon ride will be approx. 2 hours and who knows where will go - we will leave it up the law of the bush!

Hot showers and cold drinks await you on your return.

Another night under the stars around the campfire talking about the day that was and the days to come.

Each morning will follow the same rhythm, a gentle knock knock and hot water in your basin to help you rise and shine followed by a light breakfast in camp.

Today we will ride out the entire day taking a packed lunch so as not to disturb our pioneering explorations and also to allow our back-up staff time to prepare our camp in an exciting new location in anticipation of our arrival. All luggage is taken with the camp crew to the next site. The guide will instruct as to what needs to be carried on the horses for the day.

Once again, the day is not on a set route but goes according to local conditions with riding done in the morning and afternoon.

As we arrive at our new camp in the late afternoon there is just enough time for the horses to be unsaddled, fed and watered before enjoying a hot shower and icy cold sundowners as the sun dips below the horizon in a splendid array of colour.

Another sumptuous 3 course dinner awaits as we dine under a blanket of stars, the sounds of the nocturnal bush echoing around.

Rise and shine - it’s time to go and explore our new area after the morning bush routine of tea, coffee and light breakfast around the campfire.

Our riding playground today is the Umkawazaan part of the African Bush Camps private Somalisa Concession where we explore numerous waterhole areas and more of the extensive Acacia woodlands in search of wildlife.

Knock Knock – the dawn of another wonderful day of exploring with the horses. This day will either be two rides out or a full day out and may even include exploration of the Kennedy Pan area where it is not uncommon to see large herds of elephant and buffalo taking a refreshing drink.

This day we ride into the Award Winning Somalisa Expeditions, a camp close to James’ and Janine’s hearts, their all-time favourite Bush Camp that they have loved and visited for over a decade.

For the next 2 nights we are the guests of African Bush Camps. Truly authentic, the Somalisa Concession is famous for, amongst other things………Elephants!

After seeing the horses settled into their new abode and you into your luxury tent, high tea will be served. Perhaps there is time for a short nature walk around camp or just chill by the pool - hope you don’t want to swim though, the elephants enjoy popping by for a drink!

Variety is the spice of life and to sample something a little different today we have the option of taking a game drive to cover some different ground in search of more of Hwange’s famous wildlife. Whilst the horses take a well-earned rest, we venture out on four wheels!

We start off with an early morning drive and return to camp for brunch and a siesta. Then it’s back out again for more viewing as there is so much to see and experience.

Camp routine is very similar to the mobile, although here at Somalisa Expeditions you have the chance to recharge all the electrical gadgets!

All good things must come to an end they say, and today is your final day. After a leisurely breakfast, sad and often teary goodbyes are said to new-found friends and of course the fantastic horses. Fond farewells and a lifetime of memories created on your extraordinary safari with Ride Zimbabwe.

Depending on departure times for guests, we may sneak in one last ride along the Masomamalisha Vlei meeting the horse truck and transfer vehicle in the bush.

The Vardens are also known for their conservation ethos and this is reflected in their safaris - they employ local staff, source local produce and keep a low environmental footprint. The fresh food they serve is found nearby.

Terry Anders is also a licensed Professional Guide and former competitive polo player, enabling him to lead rides as well as James.

Rides operate from April until December. From December there is a strong chance of rain and riding is according to weather conditions, with no riding possible from mid January until the end of March. During November it can be very hot and so you will be expected to rise very early so that your rides can be completed before it becomes too hot.

Transfers are available from and to Victoria Falls from where it's a two and a half hour drive to Hwange park, ready to begin your adventure! There are many great add-ons possible in this region too, including a visit to world-famous Falls or perhaps a walking, canoe or jeep safari with a chance to see more wildlife up close - please contact us for suggestions.

Food & Accommodation

During this safari you will be served fresh, farm-style meals using produce which has primarily been locally-sourced. Lunches may be a hearty cooked brunch in camp or potentially eaten out in the bush.

Drinks are included and are standard local Zimbabwean beverages (both alcoholic and soft drinks). Should you request specific premium or imported drinks then these will be charged as an extra cost. Strong French press coffee is available.

Restricted diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten/lactose intolerant etc. can all be catered for with prior notice - this is essential to notify us months in advance. It's important to note that whilst it is easy to prepare meals without certain foods, Zimbabwe does not have the specialist food options available in more developed countries. Therefore we cannot guarantee the availability of specific food items or equivalents.

Water is borehole water which is filtered and very clean and safe to drink.

Accommodation

On the first and last nights you are accommodated at Iganyana Tented Camp. This luxury camp offers purpose-built tented rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities and verandas. The tents are made of steel-frames with double layers of canvas and are furnished to a high standard. The bathrooms have flushing toilets and solar-heated showers. There is a full-size swimming pool.

When on the riding safari in Hwange National Park guests are accommodated in traditional safari-style tented camps which are semi-mobile. The tents are mini walk-in Meru style tents with private long-drop loos and hot bucket showers. You will have proper beds with good linen and everything you need for a peaceful sleep.

Laundry is available both at Iganyana and when in the bush. Electricity is available at Iganyana but not in the mobile camps - gadgets and cameras can be charged in the vehicle with the right plugs. There is also limited WiFi at Iganyana but none at all when in the park and no mobile phone service either.

The closest airport is Victoria Falls, with a 2.5 - 3 hour transfer time.

You normally leave camp at 09:30am to arrive at the airport 12:30 midday. Your flight should therefore depart 14:30 or later.

Earlier transfers are possible, but will incur an additional cost because the driver will have to arrive the night before and overnight in camp to facilitate an earlier departure.

Outstanding in every way. Favourite memory? Being in the presence of 150+ elephants. Accommodation and food? Both excellent and exceeded expectations. Horses? Fit, well cared for and healthy horses that knew their job. Tack excellent. Guide? Above and beyond excellent.

Hwange National Park Ride

At a glance.

This new ride is set within Hwange national park, deep in the Kalahari. The terrain is perfect for the barefoot horses and the landscape is predominantly flat with no mountains or kopjes in sight, making for excellent riding and unimpeded views. Numerous animals roam the wonderful woodlands and grasslands near the pans, particularly elephant and giraffe. You should also see zebra, impala, kudu, warthog, eland, buffalo etc, and if you are lucky lion, cheetah, leopard and wild dog.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1 - arrival.

Riding: 1 - 2 hours

You will be transferred from Victoria Falls International Airport to Iganyana Tented Camp where you will spend the first night. This is a two to three hour drive and the 'meet and greet' and transfer is carried out by a road transfer company.

Afternoon high tea is served, followed by a briefing from your guide, an indemnity signing and introduction to the horses. You'll mount up for a short introductory ride before heading back to camp for sundowners, showers, dinner and a peaceful sleep under canvas.

Riding: 4 - 6 hours

An early start with tea, coffee and a light breakfast before mounting up. Today you'll explore the Dete Vlei and surrounds on horseback, allowing more time to adapt to the local riding style, tack and horses - any changes can easily be made today. You may ride for the whole day, or may ride 3-4 hours in the morning and then head out for a shorter ride in the afternoon - everything will depend on local game movements and conditions.

Return to Iganyana for a second night in this lovely camp.

Riding: 3 - 5 hours

Early this morning the horses and equipment will be transported by truck into Main Camp in Hwange National Park. You will have an early morning wake up with tea and coffee around the campfire, then you'll pack your bags, have breakfast and head off in the horses' footsteps. The drive is only around half an hour to an hour, depending on what sightings you have along the way!

You'll check in at the tourism office and make your conservation and camping fee payments, then you'll be back on your horse for a ride into the park. Sometimes you'll game drive deeper into the park before meeting your horse and riding to the first campsite.

Overnight at camp with sundowners, hot showers and dining under the stars

Today is another early start, although your wake-up time varies according to the seasons. Mid-year is very cold first thing in the morning and so you'll start a bit later, around 07:00, whereas the peak heat of October, November and December requires a 05:00 start.

There are no set routes to your rides and each day depends on what was heard during the night, what animal tracks your guide has found and what the weather conditions are like, as well as many other factors. It may be a half day or a full day ride with a picnic lunch near a waterhole for wildlife viewing. If lunch is at camp then the afternoon can be a bush walk or game drive. There are other waterholes which are recommended for a visit if guests are interested in birding or photography.

Sometimes your guide may decide that an early morning walk or drive is going to be better and may then switch the day around so that the morning is non-riding and the afternoon is a ride instead. Sometimes the horses need to rest before a long day the following day and that is also factored in.

Whatever happens you'll enjoy an exciting day on safari followed by cold drinks around the campfire and a delicious dinner.

Today you ride from Camp Baikiaea for a full day out to Kennedy Camp. This is a ride of around 30-40km through Zambezi teak and acacia woodlands and by waterholes (which may be dry!), stopping for a picnic lunch en-route.

In the afternoon you'll arrive to Camp Kennedy and settle in for sundowners and hot showers before dinner.

Today is spent in the Kennedy 2 area of the park, exploring some beautiful Acacia groves. The camp is located along the Kennedy Vlei which is a renowned area for wildlife viewing. Morning activities could be riding, walking or a safari drive, depending on the wildlife sightings and activity and the time of year.

A good option is to take a game drive to the Ngweshla area which isn't far, as this is usually very active for wildlife and often has a resident pride of lions.

Final early morning wake-up to enjoy the dawn in the African bush around the fire. After a light breakfast you'll be back onto the horses for a ride between 14 - 25km, depending on wildlife activity, to a point where the horse truck will meet you. This is the end of the ride and the horses will be loaded up. You'll enjoy a game drive out of the park and back to Iganyana for the night

Sundowners tonight are a special affair, reminiscing on the past few days of being in the real African bush on fine mounts, enjoying the amazing wildlife and open spaces.

Riding: No riding.

Depending on departure times, there may be time for a short walk to stretch the legs before a sumptuous final breakfast. Then it's time for transfer back to Victoria Falls airport or wherever you are headed. Sad farewells to the camp but knowing that a return to Hwange is definite!

ZIMBABWE SAFARI FAQs

Is it safe to travel to zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe for many years has received a bad reputation in the western world, and granted at times it has earned it. However, travelling as a tourist in the country is safe. Any disturbances always happen in the inner city areas (7 hours drive away) where you would not be going. From the minute you land at the airport you have 24-hour support from local and knowledgeable staff. You will be staying out in the bush and wilderness where the crime rate is exceptionally low. Isabel lived there for 3 years and can chat to you firsthand about any concerns.

When is the best time to visit Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe is a brilliant destination throughout the year. The summer months of October to March can get very hot – Up to 35-40DC in Victoria Falls – So it is best to avoid these months if you are not a heat-lover. The coolest months are June to August – You will need lots of layers for the mornings and evenings of these months.

Can I travel on my own to Zimbabwe?

Yes! 75% of the guests that join our working-holidays are solo-travellers. This is a great option for anyone travelling alone as you will get to know an awesome group of fellow adventurers from all over the world!

Is there the big 5 in Zimbabwe?

Yes – The big 5 are present in Zimbabwe’s National Parks and you have a chance of seeing them on the Zambezi Riding Safari. The big 5 are not all present on the reserve which the volunteer programme is based at, but you have the opportunity to do excursions to go and find them!

What airport do I fly into in Zimbabwe?

For our volunteer programme you can fly into either Harare or Bulawayo Airport – Usually via South Africa. Pick-up and drop-off from both is included in the trip cost. For trips to the Zambezi, you will fly into Victoria Falls Airport.

RECENT ZIMBABWE REVIEWS

“ Loads of memories that will last a lifetime! I've just arrived home after spending 2 magical weeks in Zimbabwe on a working holiday in Antelope Park. Words can't express how amazing it was, there was so much to do, so much to see and now there is so much to miss! I absolutely adored the team, everyone was super kind and lovely! The projects are fantastic, had loads of opportunities to ride horses, spend time up-close with wildlife and enjoy all the wonders that Africa has to offer! Loads of memories that will last for a lifetime! Thank you African Horse Safaris! ” Rebeka Schmidt Zimbabwe Working Holiday - Zimbabwe
“ The riding experience on this trip was unmatched. Allison was an expert at navigating us through the dense bush and dynamic landscape. She used her expertise in anti-poaching to safely get us extremely close (8-10 meters at times) to wild animals, even ones who had never seen a horse before. The riding was fast-paced and ever changing. Always something to see or somewhere to go. She had great knowledge of the landscape and would change our rides up if we weren’t seeing animals. Allison was very open that she wanted to make the most of every second of my trip - I really appreciated this, as it is quite expensive to do horse safaris. We were up before the sun and would ride until after it set. She always let me know if I wanted to ride faster or slower, or ride at a different location; all I had to do was ask. She would also consistently get off her horse to show me tracks, marking, bones, bugs, snares or something interesting. It was very educational and I learned a lot. The horses were fantastic, in great shape and brave as can be. I was able to ride 3 different horses while I was there which really added to the experience, and as I always say - the more horses the better. ” Aja Deren Zambezi Horse Safari - Zimbabwe
“ Trip of a lifetime! Fully recommend booking with African Horse Safaris. The team helped me organise a trip of a lifetime even including some trips that were horsey. The planning and timing of the trips allowed little stress on our side. We did 2 weeks volunteering in Zimbabwe which was amazing and allowed us to partake in so many activities including a horse swim and polo crosse with wild animals around. Then we went up to Hwange and rode with Ride Zimbabwe which was unreal. A truly once in a lifetime experience with amazing guides. I thank AHS for helping to book and source these fabulous places. ” Charlotte Baron Zimbabwe Working Holiday and Hwange Safari - Zimbabwe
“ How was my trip to Zimbabwe? I've been getting this question a lot over the last few days. And my answer is always the same: An absolute dream came true for me in Zimbabwe. I enjoyed everything from the first second to the last. The team of Ride Zimbabwe is incredibly welcoming and supportive. Especially our guide James knew the bush incredibly well and could explain and share so much about everything (animals, plants, African traditions and culture). In Gizmet I found my perfect partner for the safari. He is a super sweet white gelding who is very easy-going, but also likes to speed up when cantering. Riding in the bush is an experience that everyone should have once. You get a unique insight into the nature and wildlife of Zimbabwe. Through our mobile camps we also had the chance to see many different parts of the Hwange National Park. We loved our game drives and were very lucky! We saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, kudus and lots of lions (and of course many other animals). watching the sundowners and especially the stars around the campfire will stay in my memory forever. The African sky is simply unique. The whole team of Ride Zimbabwe gave us a unique time and I can't thank them enough! Thank you again for everything! I can't wait to start my next adventure with you once my bank account has recovered. ” Sabrina Sánchez Pérez Hwange Horse Safari - Zimbabwe

RIDE ZIMBABWE

With james varden, safaris on horseback.

Ride Zimbabwe combines the thrill of an African safari with the pleasure of horse-riding, and is a great way to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and get close to the wonderful wildlife in a quiet, natural and unobtrusive way. Animals such as antelope, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, even elephant and buffalo, and other non-predatory plains game, simply see horses as other similar four-legged creatures sharing their environment, and take little notice of their human riders on top.

On a Ride Zimbabwe horseback safari, you can stroll right up to a giraffe as it feeds in the acacia woodlands and trot across a grassy plain alongside a family of warthog, or let your horse munch grass near a herd of zebra or watch a herd of sable go to drink at a waterhole. These are magical moments that you just cannot experience in a regular game-viewing vehicle, which additionally have noisy engines and are often full of other people, and must stick to only the marked roads and tracks in wildlife areas.

Our special horses at Ride Zimbabwe are permitted to go absolutely anywhere, and you and your affectionate steed can explore beautiful wildernesses shared only with the grazing herds. Other advantages of safaris on horseback over vehicle safaris is that horses have finely-tuned senses to send signals to other game animals in the area to relax, and of course as a rider you are higher up so have the benefit of being able to see quite a distance across the African landscape.

Ride Zimbabwe operates multi-day horseback safaris for experienced riders in some incredible destinations, carefully chosen for both their scenic beauty and prolific game. We are based at Umguza outside of Bulawayo in Matabeleland in central Zimbabwe and run our safaris in the riding areas of Hwange National Park, Cawston Wildlife Estate, and Matobo National Park (CURRENTLY SUSPENDED DUE TO COVID) These are easily accessible from both Victoria Falls and Bulawayo airports and transfers are available, and there are many great add-on possibilities in this region too, including a visit to the world-famous Victoria Falls. THOUGH THE ULIMATE ADD ON FOR ACTIVE AND ADVENTUROUS RIDERS IS A CANOE AND WALKING SAFARI IN MANA POOLS.

We provide an exclusive and personal experience in the saddle with superbly-schooled horses and dedicated and highly-trained Zimbabwean guides, blended with mobile, ecologically-sound wilderness camps and selected fully-serviced lodges. Then there are the delicious home-cooked meals enjoyed in the bush and tranquil evenings sitting around the campfire sharing the day’s riding stories. If you love horses, adventure and the great outdoors, there is truly no better way to discover Africa than on a Ride Zimbabwe horseback safari.

Words don’t do what we have just experienced justice. We have been privileged enough to have spent 6 days riding over 140km from Hwange Main Camp to Somalisa Expeditions on wonderful, well cared after horses, being looked after all the way by our expert guides, James and John. The ride covered a variety of terrain and was mind blowing knowing all along we were riding horses that were enjoying their time as much as we were! It honestly far exceeded all expectations of the week. I can’t believe I saw so many amazing animals, from the chasing lions, 200 herd of ele, cat at camp and all the giraffe (not to mention all, the pangolin!)

Well, how to express what a fabulous time I have had, 3 days of bliss (and maybe a blister or 2!) riding Moolie-the stunning black Friesan with huge heart.

The storm on Tuesday night cooled & fed the thirsty bush and offered so many glimpses into the bush revival.

The surprise sundowner on the last night- drinking prosecco to an apricot sunset with the company of James and Janine + Danni will remain an unforgetable moment.

Iganyana is a very special place.

Thank you, thank you

About Zimbabwe

Many explorers and travelers are drawn to Zimbabwe for Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. No doubt, this grand roaring spectacle will make your heart thump. Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in South Africa, tucked between two of the continent’s most renowned rivers, the Zambezi, and the Limpopo. This country is a myriad of alluring savannah, undiscovered bushland, fascinating wildlife, and a fiery setting sun. Horseback allows travelers an up-close glimpse of this idyllic, rustic land.

Zimbabwe: Nature and Wildlife

When you trek through the landscapes of Zimbabwe on horseback, you will delight in its enchanting natural wonder. Its coarse terrain includes stretches of golden savannahs, isolated woodland, lazy rivers, and twisting rapids. There are sweeps of mountains flanked in mist and lush wetlands alive with creatures, both gentle and predator. Enjoy the rush of a canter through these landscapes and trust the steadiness of your horse in the more remote, challenging environments.

The town of Victoria Falls is a national park in which wildlife roams freely. Encounter elephant, buffalo, several species of antelope, warthog, and baboons. Occasionally, you may spot leopard and hyena. If you are lucky, you may bump into the mighty lion, too.

Zimbabwe is predominantly in the tropics but enjoys a range of subtropical conditions because of its elevation. June tends to be cooler, while October is often the warmest. Peak season is between these months.

Horse Tours Club

Horse Tours Club offers a variety of horse safari trips with veritable partners. Our partners have curated several horseback safari adventures that will take you to the heart of Zimbabwe. Their highly trained, bush ready horses will not hesitate to offer you a front-row seat to view fascinating game, and raw natural beauty. Our guides offer practical knowledge and stories on the history, flora and fauna, and wildlife of this region and will help you feel comfortable no matter your riding level.

One tour we offer is a 3-day or 5-day safari into the bushland of Hwange National Park. Canter through the fields gilded in gold while you track wildlife and enjoy a horse dip into a waterhole. This itinerary is perfect for those wishing to experience the bushland and game of Zimbabwe and recharge in the comfort of the Miombo Safari Lodge. Take in the orange, yellow, and indigo hues of the sunset as you enjoy all the bush has to offer, from the quant lodge permeated by the music of the land. There is nothing like enjoying a wine around the crackling campfire, with the stars scattering the inky night sky above. The birds and insects will lull you to sleep in your tent.

Another varying tour we offer is a 7-day itinerary. Ride through the remote African bush or embark on a game drive through the Hwange National Park. Either option allows equestrians to become familiar with the diverse flora and fauna of Zimbabwe’s largest national park. Enjoy the wisps of the rising sun as you begin your day’s travel across the Savannah vleis (tropical grassland) and trot into mystical acacia forests. Choose full days of riding or visit the nearby conversation or community projects of the national park. Soak in the waterhole with elephants. Canter alongside antelope and buffalo. Meet the savannah’s most famous predators such as the lion.

The Hwange National Park neighbors the jaw-dropping Victoria Falls, the second largest waterfall in the world. This unfenced, wide open space of desert, grassland, and bush is an authentic, unparalleled experience that will leave you both breathless, and yearning for your next adventure.

Visit our catalog to book the riding safari vacation of a lifetime in this thrilling, wild countryside.

The climate in Zimbabwe varies from sub-equatorial in the north to tropical in the south, with characteristic rainy and dry periods. The average daytime temperature in summer (December-March) is around +77°F (+25°C), while the average temperature in the winter season (June-August) is +62.6°F (+17°C). June and July are the coolest months of the year.

The rainy season lasts approximately from November to March when temperatures remain fairly high, and air humidity is high as well. At this time, up to 500 mm of precipitation can fall in some places. The dry season starts in April and lasts until October.

In general, Zimbabwe can be visited all year round, seasons speaking. However, the most comfortable time for travel is the winter period from May to September when the temperatures are lower, and there is less precipitation, which is favorable for travel.

Hwange National Park is the largest and most popular park in Zimbabwe. Easily visited from Victoria Falls, it offers excellent general wildlife viewing, including all the Big Five (although rhinos are very scarce). Hwange is most famous for its elephants, which are present in impressive numbers throughout the year, but frequently gather around waterholes in their hundreds during the Dry season.

Hwange NP Safari Reviews

  • Expert Rating 4.2 /5 – 14 Reviews
  • User Rating 4.7 /5 – 53 Reviews

With more than 100 mammal and almost 500 bird species recorded, Hwange is one of southern Africa’s most biodiverse parks. Elephant numbers are staggering, with up to 50,000 individuals present at the height of the Dry season (April to October). A healthy population of up to 1,000 lions is supplemented by leopard, cheetah and African wild dog . An impressive variety of antelope includes gemsbok , sable antelope , eland and greater kudu .

  • More about Hwange’s wildlife

Hwange is not scenic in a conventional sense, but the immersive wilderness atmosphere of this vast park more than compensates. It stands on the eastern edge of the vast Kalahari sands and scrublands. Habitats include teak forest, thornveld and mopane woodland . There is little natural water in Hwange and animals are dependent on artificial waterholes , especially during the Dry season (April to October).

For most visitors to Hwange, the main activity will be game drives . If you stay at a private camp, guided drives will most likely be included in your package. Self-drive safaris are also straightforward (main roads are navigable in an ordinary car, but some minor roads might require 4x4 and/or high-clearance vehicle). Most camps also offer guided walking safaris , but only those on private concessions are allowed to do night drives .

Hwange has two clear-cut seasons. The Dry season (April to October) starts off warm before temperatures dip in the middle of the year. Then the heat quickly gets turned up, peaking in the blazing heat of October. The Wet season (November to March) cools things off at first with its stormy weather before settling into a pattern of hot, humid days.

  • More about the weather and climate

Hwange is at its best from July to October, during the middle and end of the Dry season, when animals crowd the waterholes. You will pretty much have the park to yourself in the Wet season (November to March), but animals are more scattered at that time.
