About Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is one of the most influential entertainers of the modern era. Her music has won her 5 GRAMMY® Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, a nomination for an Academy Award along with dozens of American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards. She has received accolades as an actress as well including the NAACP Best Supporting Actor award. Janet is a published author, dancer, businessperson, philanthropist and one of biggest-selling artists in popular music history. With sales of over 180 million records worldwide, Janet Jackson stands as one of the best-selling artists of all time with a string of hits that have left an indelible impression on pop culture. She is the record holder for the biggest selling debut tour in history and is the first woman to debut in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 charts. She also stands as one of only four artists to have a #1 album for four successive decades alongside Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and U2. Even today she continues to make an undeniable impact. In 2018, her last single, “Made for Now” with Daddy Yankee, released by her own Rhythm Nation Records, hit #1 on the Dance Clubs Songs chart making it her 20th single on the chart in the span of her career. In 2019, she was inducted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside her brothers and in that same year her critically acclaimed Las Vegas residency, “Metamorphosis” closed out to record breaking ticket sales with only 18 dates at the Park MGM’s Park Theater. As reported by Billboard Boxscore, the legendary singer, dancer, songwriter, producer, and actress is among the biggest Vegas performers of this decade, ahead of Celine Dion (2011), Britney Spears (2013) and the Backstreet Boys (2017). Her critically acclaimed and award winning documentary “Janet Jackson.” brought in over 20 million viewers in one week.

On February 4, 2021, Janet Jackson’s iconic mega platinum-selling third album Control turned 35. The album also returned to the top of the charts, hitting #1 on the Apple Top 40 US Pop Album chart. Led by five chart-busting hit singles — “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “Control,” “When I Think Of You,” —with their complementary, tightly choreographed music videos — and “Let’s Wait Awhile,” Control became Jackson’s first No. 1 Pop album. The album also made Billboard chart history for having the longest continuous run on the Hot 100 with singles from one album, ultimately tallying a remarkable 65 consecutive weeks from that perch. To date, Control has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

About Chris “Ludacris” Bridges

The career of the multi-talented CHRIS “LUDACRIS” BRIDGES can best be described as remarkable. As a recording artist, he has sold more than 24 million albums worldwide, thanks to the blockbuster success of such singles as “Stand Up,” “Get Back,” “Southern Hospitality,” “Number One Spot,” “Money Maker” and “My Chick Bad.” All of these records were accompanied by ingenious videos that demonstrated Bridges’ far-reaching imagination, and his willingness to stretch the boundaries of what rap videos should look and feel like.

With an unrivaled match of lyrical acumen, wit, and imagery, Ludacris has solidified himself as one of music’s premier entertainers. His versatility and artistic complexity also enabled him to make a seamless transition to acting, including the fan favorite role of “Tej” in Universal Pictures’ box office phenomenon Fast & Furious franchise where he was introduced for the first time in 2003 in 2 Fast 2 Furious.  He will reprise his role of “Tej” for the seventh time in Fast X, which is set to release May 20, 2023.

His other notable feature film credits include Garry Marshall’s ensemble comedy New Year’s Eve, Ivan Reitman’s romantic comedy, No Strings Attached, Paul Higgin’s Crash which received an Academy Award for Best Picture in 2006 and Hustle & Flow which earned Bridges a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

As a father of four girls, his latest ventures fittingly include launching his educational platform devoted to the enrichment of children called “KidNation”.  In addition, Bridges created the animated series KARMA’S WORLD which launched in the Top 10 in 42 countries on Netflix, received two NAACP Award nominations and is already on its fourth season.  The series for children ages 6-9 is a coming-of-age story about a young Black girl finding her voice and using it to change her world — originally inspired by Chris’s oldest daughter Karma and based on the interactive educational website of the same name created by Karma’s World Entertainment in 2009.

A consummate businessman, Ludacris is enjoying success outside of entertainment. One of his most successful ventures includes opening his long-anticipated restaurant “Chicken-n-Beer” at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport with a new location opening at LAX in 2023.

Bridge’s philanthropic efforts rival his entertainment accomplishments. He started The Ludacris Foundation in 2001 which focuses on helping the youth in his hometown of Atlanta and has partnered with No Kid Hungry and Feeding America.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is an unshakeable icon — unbreakable , even. The past few years reminded us just how grand her legacy is. In 2019, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and enjoyed her Metamorphosis Las Vegas residency. Last January, the fiercely private star allowed the world into her personal journey with A&E and Lifetime’s Janet Jackson two-part documentary. And in December, she announced her 2023 Together Again Tour .

A 33-date trek across North American arenas/amphitheaters, it kicks off on April 14 in Hollywood, Fla. and follows both 2017’s socially conscious State of the World Tour and her four-month, 18-show 2019 Metamorphosis residency in Las Vegas. With a truly staggering catalog filled with chart-topping albums and singles, it’s difficult to tell what tunes Miss Jackson will choose.

Will she revive her previous ideas from 2020’s Black Diamond World Tour (which was canceled due to the pandemic) or completely scrap them? How will she celebrate this May’s 30th anniversary of her blockbuster fifth album Janet ? Will she forgo her usual offerings of ‘80s classics and replace them with deep cuts? Aside from Ludacris as the opening act, who will be the special guests?

There are many questions as to how she’ll fill up a standard two hours, but we attempt to answer them all below with our dream setlist for the Janet Jackson: Together Again tour — a journey through over three dozen of the pop and R&B legend’s classic tracks, deep cuts, features and collaborations. Now, let’s get to grooving!

“Together Again” (Intro)

To set the tour’s reunion theme, the night will kick off with the twinkling ballad intro of this The Velvet Rope classic, as various clips of Janet Jackson throughout her career play on the screen. But before that familiar uptempo kicks in, the screen’s imagery shatters and distorts to reveal the icon standing on the stage dressed in an avant-garde Rick Owens outfit. Now with the spotlight officially on her, we’re ready to start the show.

The concert has no choice but to kick off with a dance track (this is Janet Jackson, after all). But rather than immediately hopping into the ‘80s classics as most of her tour openers have done, we’ll head into the future with this 2007 electropop jam.

“All Nite (Don’t Stop)”

As the stage lights lower, Janet’s dancers get into formation before the lights quickly begin to flicker to the beat of this bass-driven Damita Jo single. The venue feels like we’re in a club and the concertgoers’ energy is officially rising.

It’s time to throw it back to the classics. Janet switches her structured Rick Owens jacket for a dramatically padded sequined black blazer — a nod to the ‘80s, when her transitional Control album was released — as she says “How are you all feeling? It’s great to be together again!” The audience replies with thrilled shouts as she pops and locks through the song.

“Nasty” / “What Have You Done For Me Lately”

“GIMMIE A BEAT!” The 1986 smash “Nasty” was the hammer that broke Janet’s sweet “girl next door” mold and allowed her to embrace her womanhood, while “What Have You Done For Me Lately” revved up the sass. She embodies a youthful spirit as she swivels her hips and growls the lyrics to these funky classics.

“The Pleasure Principle” / “Miss You Much”

The stage is awash with a vibrant purple hue (another nod to the ‘80s) as Janet’s dancers roll out a large mirror and a few chairs onto the stage for the dance routine. Both of these songs feature iconic chair-eography, which has since inspired everyone from Britney Spears and Mya to Tinashe and Normani. But here, Miss Jackson If Ya Nasty shows the ladies how it’s done.

“Dammn Baby” (Interlude)

At this point, Janet is completely free on stage and ready to dance even more. During this interlude to 2015’s breezy Unbreakable single, she does a quick outfit change into a ripped t-shirt and leather joggers so she can really bust a move.

“Rock With U” / “When We Ooo” / “SloLove”

It’s now time for the night’s first three-song medley. Janet whispers “Strobe lights make everything sexier/ Shadows dancing on the wall” from “Rock With U”, with the stage lights reflecting her seductive commands. The singer and her dancers continue their disco-inspired routine as they move and shake into the next two tracks.

“Love Will Never Do (Without You)”

The abundance of love is near tangible in the venue, and Janet cannot stop smiling as she looks at her fans in awe. “This next song is dedicated to all of you, can you feel the love??” she asks, as the bassline kicks in for this sparkling Rhythm Nation 1814 single.

“Alright” / “Escapade” / “When I Think of You”

The feel-good vibes continue with this next medley, as Janet and her dancers hop into the Cab Calloway-inspired routine of “Alright” as the video plays on screen. Once the other infectious songs from Rhythm Nation 1814  and Control kick in, everyone in the venue is already on their feet.

“You Want This”

With Janet celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the singer uses the following concert section to channel the album’s theme of sexual freedom. The playfulness of this single, which samples Diana Ross & the Supremes’ 1968 song “Love Child” and Kool & the Gang’s 1973 song “Jungle Boogie”, does the trick.

Just as everyone is bouncing to the jams, the stage lights temporarily cut out to shocked gasps. “Wait, what’s happening?” fans ponder as red strobe lights cut through the darkness. Once the industrial synths of “If” rip through the speakers, it’s clear we’ve now been transported to an underground European club.

“Throb” / “Free Xone” Mashup

The club kid spirit heightens even more with this dizzying mashup of diehard fan-favorite deep cuts from Janet and The Velvet Rope . Once it ends, fans find themselves glistening with sweat as they reach for their drinks to cool themselves off.

“That's the Way Love Goes” / “No Sleeeep” / “Got ‘Til It’s Gone”

Whew , that was a whirlwind huh? At this point, everyone (the fans and Janet alike) needs to catch their breath, so let’s slow things down with this sultry mashup. The singer saunters across the stage while snapping her fingers to the hypnotizing Janet single, before leading into Unbreakable ’s quiet storm groove. When “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” kicks in, her dancers re-emerge to perform a laid-back ‘90s hip-hop routine.

“Come Back to Me” / “Where Are You Now”

Janet is mainly known for her high-energy tunes, but this is the moment where she reminds everyone of her equally strong ballads. She takes a seat on a high stool to belt these soulful R&B love songs as the stage lights twinkle a sky-blue.

“Any Time, Any Place” / “Poetic Justice” Mashup

Still sitting on the stool, Janet bops along to this PDA anthem with sounds of rain and thunder rippling through the venue. Before the singer reaches the bridge’s climax, two dancers on the opposite end of the stage perform a sultry routine to Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s “Poetic Justice” collaboration (which famously samples “Anytime, Any Place”).

“Love Scene (Ooh Baby)” (Interlude)

Let’s keep the lustful vibes going, shall we? Janet quickly disappears from the stage as this All For You deep cut plays, signaling that it’s sex o’clock.

“Rope Burn” / “Would You Mind” / “Discipline” / “Moist”

Part of what’s made Janet such an icon is her unapologetic sexual liberation, and this medley honors that. “Mmm, my lips hurt” she moans through the BDSM anthem that is “Rope Burn”. She then unleashes her inner fantasies, breathily murmuring and purring through the next songs as she urges to touch, suck and lick and begs for punishment. Throughout this time, she calls back to 2001’s All for You Tour, where she brings up an audience member to tease on stage.

“I Get Lonely” / “What's It Gonna Be?!” Mashup

The passion peaks with this mashup, as Janet rips off her shirt to reveal a lace bustier with pierced nipples (a naughtier nod to the iconic “I Get Lonely” video). She’s then joined by her dancers for the routine. As she sings “Gonna break it down, break it down, break it down”, the audio switches to her after-hours 1999 collaboration with Busta Rhymes.

“Someone to Call My Lover”

For the concert’s final act, Janet is now ready to celebrate joy at its fullest. Once the jangling guitar riff of “Someone to Call My Lover” (which samples America’s 1972 hit “Ventura Highway”) blasts through the speakers, the fans are ready to dance once again.

“Doesn’t Really Matter”

For her final outfit change, Janet places a studded orange leather jacket (a nod to this music video) over her bustier and switches her leather joggers for khaki cargo pants. The look is easier to move in as her and her dancers break out into the classic routine.

“All For You” / “R&B Junkie” / “Make Me”

The concert’s over (or so the audience thinks) and Janet wants to make sure everyone leaves in good spirits. This high-energy medley urges everyone to leap out of their seats as they dance and shout the lyrics of each song, taking selfies and videos to capture the moment forever.

ENCORE: "Scream"

Don’t go just yet, there’s more! Before the lights get a chance to fully lower, Janet’s silhouette is awash in bright white and the “Scream” video plays on the screen. The crowd is whipped into a frenzy as they watch her master the floor routine alongside her similarly legendary brother, Michael.

“Rhythm Nation”

The singer is now reunited with all of her dance crew to perform the iconic, military-inspired routine to “Rhythm Nation,” with fans mimicking the same moves in the venue’s aisles.

“Together Again” (DJ Premier Remix) / “Together Again”

The concert officially wraps with a full-circle moment. Janet teases the lyrics of “Together Again” while the instrumental of DJ Premier’s hip-hop remix plays in the background. She reminds the audience about the importance of inclusivity and the power of love before jumping into the original version of the Hot 100-topping house anthem. Janet thanks everyone for coming and says once more that she loves them, a genuine sentiment that fan will feel hours after the concert ends.

‘Sheinelle, don’t get weird’: Janet Jackson bonds with a ‘Today’ host superfan

When Janet Jackson showed up Friday on ‘Today,’ she likely didn’t expect the outpouring of admiration that came from superfan host Sheinelle Jones.

Dec. 16, 2022

During Jackson’s encore performance of “Together Again,”Jones joined her onstage. The “That’s the Way Love Goes” artist extended an invitation for the broadcast journalist to be one of her backup dancers for the day after Jones channeled Jackson for the 2019 Halloween episode of NBC’s “Today” show.

“I would love for you to join me,” Jackson told Jones a few months ago while promoting her tour on the morning program. “You should.”

Fast-forward to this weekend, when Jackson gave Jones a backstage tour and a rare interview reflecting on her life, career and upcoming documentary, which will include footage from the Together Again tour.

“Maybe it’s because I’m not as shy as I used to be,” Jackson said of her decision to document this phase of her journey. “I’m a little bit more open to sharing more in my life than I ever did before.”

The Hollywood Bowl 2023 lineup includes Janet Jackson, Culture Club and movies galore

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season lineup on Tuesday, including opening night with Janet Jackson, a Beach Boys fireworks spectacular, a 90th birthday tribute to Quincy Jones and more.

Feb. 7, 2023

After practicing for hours with Jackson’s backup dancers and alone in her hotel room, Jones performed a short routine to the tune of “Together Again” alongside her idol at the Hard Rock Live.

“Last night I kept trying to find the place between being out of my body and trying to stay in my body and actually get on that stage,” Jones said Monday on “Today.”

“When I was in high school, I had pictures of news anchors on one wall, and then I had pictures of Janet Jackson on another ... and when I was in seventh grade, I would make up dances to Janet. And so to be on that stage last night, it was ... surreal.”

Jackson’s Together Again tour encompasses more than 30 cities across the United States and Canada, including five stops in California. The veteran musician is scheduled to come to Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Highland and Mountain View in June.

On June 10, Jackson will headline opening night of the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season with support from Ludacris and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s youth orchestra.

Janet Jackson Kicks Off Opening Night of Her 'Together Again Tour' in Florida with 40-Song Set

The music superstar ran through some of her biggest hits, including "All for You," "I Get Lonely" and “What Have You Done for Me Lately"

janet jackson ludacris tour setlist

Janet Jackson is back on the road for the first time in nearly four years , and she's brought a massive, 40-song setlist with her.

The pop legend, 56, kicked off her long-awaited Together Again Tour on Friday at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla., outside of Fort Lauderdale. The outing marked her first time on tour since her fall 2019 run of shows in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 .

Her latest performance (named in honor of her The Velvet Rope hit), focused on her decades-long catalog — with live debuts of a few deeper cuts and performances of essentials, such as "All For You," "That's the Way Love Goes" and of course, "Together Again."

Jackson opened the show, per USA Today , with a live debut of "Damita Jo" off her 2004 album of the same name, before sharing the DJ Premier remix of "Together Again," smash "Got 'Til It's Gone" and others during the first part of her performance. She walked out on stage after a video compilation of some of her finest moments played for the crowd, as she wore a purple cloak and stood center stage to thunderous applause.

Other live debuts took place during Jackson's set — split into five acts — including tracks "Enjoy" and "Because of Love," per USA Today .

The show's second act included smashes like "Control" and "Nasty," with a third act focusing on the "Together Again" remix and "I Get Lonely" remix — tying it into the 25th anniversary of her classic LP The Velvet Rope . A fourth act contained performances of "Doesn't Really Matter," "All For You" and "Do It 2 Me," a fifth act included "Rhythm Nation" and "Scream," and for a grand finale, Janet once again treated fans to "Together Again."

And of course, since it's a Janet Jackson outing, the Together Again Tour was stacked with stellar choreography that fans should be all too familiar with, and a few costume changes reminiscent of her many eras and looks through the years, including a black Rhythm Nation crop top.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Jackson announced the tour back in December when she shared that the 33-date trip around North America will have her touching down in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Toronto, and beyond as she's joined by hip-hop heavyweight Ludacris .

"You guys, I miss you so much, I am so excited to see you," Janet said in an Instagram video revealing the news. "You guys have no idea, I've missed you so much, so much, and I can't wait to be with you. I'm so excited."

The tour, which will close out in Seattle, Wash. on June 21, follows Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 anniversary tour, and her Metamorphosis Las Vegas residency from the summer of 2019. Before that, she promoted her last studio album, Unbreakable , during the three legs of her State of the World Tour from 2017-2019.

The Together Again Tour also marks her 50th anniversary in entertainment and the 30th anniversary of her janet LP, according to a release.

As for the current happenings in Jackson's life, the pop icon told Essence in their July/August 2022 issue that her focus at the moment was on being a mother. She welcomed son Eissa , 6, in January 2017 with ex-husband Wissam Al Mana.

"Even though it's something that I absolutely love, it still is my work, my job," she said. "There will be music at some point. Exactly when? I can't say just yet, but there will be. I love it too much not to do it. This is all I know. There's so much that I want to do — but my No. 1 job is being a mama."

Concert review: Janet Jackson got lost in the sound and fury at the X

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Janet Jackson took the stage Tuesday night at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center wearing a comically oversized jacket that, coupled with the lengthy braids she kept sweeping away from her face, kept her largely hidden from the enthusiastic crowd of about 10,000.

It turned out to be an apt metaphor for her enthusiastic, if underwhelming, performance that echoed the 58-year-old’s three most recent local shows in the time since she returned to large-scale touring in 2015.

Her live band, tucked away in the shadows at the back of the stage, often overpowered Jackson, who also leaned heavily into the prerecorded backing vocals. And, once again, she crammed as many songs into her 110 minute show as she could, even if that meant cutting down some of her most-loved songs to a mere verse and chorus.

Jackson did switch up the set list from her previous show at the X, which happened just 13 months ago. Split into four “acts” and a finale, with downtime between each to facilitate Jackson’s costume changes, the show bumped her biggest hits up against relatively obscure album cuts, many drawn from her post-Super Bowl halftime show years when the music industry pretty much abandoned her.

(I, for one, was hoping — hoping, but not expecting — to hear Jackson throw some shade in Justin Timberlake’s direction following his early morning arrest Tuesday on DWI charges in the Hamptons. Alas, she chose grace, something Timberlake most certainly did not in the years since he tossed her under the bus after her infamous “wardrobe malfunction.”)

Jackson opened the first act with “Night,” from her most recent album, 2015’s “Unbreakable.” From there, she dived deep into her catalog for a series of upbeat, sometimes indecipherable, songs delivered as a lengthy medley. It wasn’t until her a cappella intro to “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” that the crowd got their first clear taste of Jackson’s breathy vocals.

Flanked by her muscular dancers, who wore dress shirts with the arms ripped off and plaid skirts, Jackson revisited a trio of her earliest hits during the second act: “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty” and “The Pleasure Principle.”

The concert was nearly half over when Jackson shifted into slow jam mode, kicking off a run of songs with 2006’s ode to, uh, self-pleasure “Take Care” followed, funnily enough, by her 1987 ode to chastity “Let’s Wait Awhile.” She let the audience sing the bulk of “Again” and then broke into tears and announced “I love you so much,” a popular refrain from Jackson the few times she did speak to the crowd.

Well into her second hour, Jackson unleashed her full voice for “Alright,” “Escapade” and “Miss You Much” and did the same near the end during “Scream” (accompanied by her late brother Michael’s recorded vocals) and a particularly fiery and noisy “Rhythm Nation.” It would have been great to hear more of that throughout the show.

From there, she’ll continue on to stops in Birmingham, London, Glasgow and Manchester, before heading back to mainland Europe and concluding at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on October 10.

'I'm still disgusted': Janet Jackson rails against 'injustice' at San Francisco concert

B eyond expressing love and appreciation for her fans, Janet Jackson isn’t typically one to say too much in between songs at her shows. Small talk isn’t her style, but there’s one thing she said at her Chase Center show on Wednesday that really hit at the heart of a universal feeling.

The crowd roared when projection screens beamed out the music video for “Scream,” the 1995 international hit she recorded with her late brother Michael Jackson . She was in the back having one of many costume changes and let him and her dancers handle it onstage for a moment, along with a recording of Michael singing the line, “I’m tired of injustice, I’m tired of the schemes!”

She came back onstage to sing her first verse of “Scream.” Her voice is in great shape and was typically gentle but powerful during the 90-minute concert, but she really went full throttle on this particular song, belting it out in a way that is markedly different from how she is on the recorded album track.

“You’re selling out souls but I, I care about mine,” she sang. “I’ve got to get stronger, then I won’t give up the fight!”

“I’m still disgusted by all the injustice!” she told the Chase Center audience after the music stopped, referencing a line she speaks in the song’s bridge about social and racial inequities.

Jackson previously performed a 30-year anniversary tribute at Chase Center in 2019, but there’s more fire and focus in presenting that material right now, as well as an impressive demand from fans. The Together Again tour was announced back in December 2022 and is expected to run through October. According to Billboard , what turned out to be the first run of the tour was also the most lucrative run of her career to date, earning almost $51 million.

Attendees, some dressed in sparkly sequins to mimic Janet and Michael’s looks, were slowly filling into the arena as St. Louis rapper Nelly began his opening set just after 8 p.m. Those who caught him were noticeably engaged in singing along with the hooks to his hits and most memorable guest verses, including his breakthrough single “Country Grammar,” the Kelly Rowland duet “Dilemma” and the still-inescapable “Hot in Herre.” Backed by DJ Trife, he and his short shorts-clad dancers got their biggest reaction when they did Michael Jackson’s leg kick in formation as the needle dropped on that famous refrain from 1979’s “Off the Wall”: “‘Cause we’re the party people, night and day …  so tonight, gotta leave that nine to five up on the shelf, and just enjoy yourself!”

Once Janet took the stage, it was clear that her brother’s influence, as well as that of his dancing hero Fred Astaire, would be expressed throughout the show in gallant choreography and sharp suits. Throughout the set, she emphasized the enduring anti-racist message of her “Rhythm Nation” album, which is now 35 years old.

Setlist.FM reports that the current iteration of her Together Again tour contains 39 songs, and she at least briefly touches on almost all of the hits that people want to hear during these shows, including “Nasty,” “That’s The Way Love Goes,” “The Pleasure Principle,” “Control” and “Escapade.” As she warns at the beginning of the show, “I can go all night.”

But Jackson also makes noticeable room in the setlist to include some deep cuts in her catalog. She clearly enjoys performing songs like “Feedback,” an electro-pop number from 2008 that was produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, and “So Excited,” which features a hook from the ribald “My Neck, My Back” rapper Khia and was released in 2006.

Only one moment didn’t seem to flow with the rest as well. She asked everyone to sing “Again” for her, but people didn’t seem to know all those words en masse like they did with the song that preceded it, the demure ’80s ballad “Let’s Wait Awhile.” It was an outlier in a set where most songs had heavy singing participation from the audience.

Previous tours have come through with quite a few more dancers, but this run’s got four charismatic men who serve more than enough smolder and are in wonderful lockstep with the star. Much of the choreography draws from her most memorable music video moves, which is an astute way to get audience participation. With no catwalk or extensions into the floor, the stage setup is surprisingly modest and makes effective use of an upper level that she can use for the larger-than-life moments. No pyro needed here.

It’s a good choice to keep this dancing circle tight, and their talent held the crowd as she slipped into all those costume changes. Some of the binary-bending looks came with large, abstract overcoats that were shed to reveal slinkier suits and even a corset that snatched her waist. At 58, she appears to be in peak physical shape and form, and with such an energetic show, that’s no wonder.

After the curtains drew down around her on Wednesday night, those who lingered for a few minutes before leaving saw just how many people have come together to make such a large production hum via movielike credits that ran on the central screen. The credits shouted out everyone from her creative director to the tour truck drivers as the thousands of fans filed out of the stadium, recounting their favorite moments in too-loud voices, to still-ringing ears.
