YAMATO The Drummers of Japan / Hinotori The Wings of Phoenix

They never miss a beat.

⽕の⿃ Hinotori (Phoenix)

Expect remarkable athleticism, high energy spectacle and drums that explode with energy. Passion meets tradition in a show which drums up the spirit of Japan.

Taiko drumming is a centuries-old tradition in Japanese culture, and the drummers of YAMATO continue to challenge the boundaries of what it can be. They push themselves to their absolute limits and leave audiences breathless in the process.

After a successful run at the Peacock in 2019, YAMATO return to London in 2024 with their latest show. This new work marks the 30th anniversary of the company and celebrates the group’s tours and performances in around 54 different countries and regions, with over 4,500 performances that reached almost 8 million people.

With that unwavering aspiration, YAMATO continues its odyssey with taiko drums.

Memorial Hall presents Yamato The Drummers of Japan World Tour 2022

Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere.

Yamato was founded by Masa Ogawa in 1993 in Nara, ‘the land of Yamato” which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. Presently based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere.

In the village of Asuka, a place with more than a thousand years of history and culture, Yamato seeks new expression with Wadaiko as its backbone.  They think of the sound of the drums – made of animal skin and ancient trees, some of which are more than 400 years old – as a pulse or heartbeat (Shin-on), the center of life and the source of power which pulsates within the human body. Like the strong and sturdy heartbeats of a lonely runner with a sleek and powerful body, Yamato attempts to create the energy of life, which envelops the audience and performers.  What one feels when surrounded by the sound of Wadaiko, brought out by these highly trained performers, is what the Japanese call “Tamashy”, translated as soul, spirit, and psyche – the basic elements of life. It is something which is invisible and intangible but whose existence is certainly felt.  The pulse, carried down from antiquity, will resonate within all the bodies gathered at any given performance.

YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan Celebrate 30th Anniversary Tour February – April!

17 Jan 2023

japanese drummers tour 2022

YAMATO: the Drummers of Japan will visit Twenty-Eight North American Cities this February-April with their 30th Anniversary Tour Program 「火の鳥」Hinotori – The wings of Phoenix

From February 14 – April 16, 2023, YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan will tour North America with their new show entitled, 「火の鳥」 Hinotori – The wings of Phoenix . This year marks the 30th Anniversary season for the “simply captivating” ( The Evening Post ) Taiko troupe, who have reached nearly 8 million people globally in over 4,000 performances throughout their history. The troupe brings Hinotori – The wings of Phoenix to twenty-eight venues in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Delaware, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, and Calgary and Toronto, Canada.

The physically powerful troupe of musician-athletes work and live together as a community in the Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. There they create their own musical compositions, theater productions, sets, lighting design, choreography, performance techniques, costumes, makeup, stage settings and props. They even make their own bachi sticks used to play the traditional Japanese instruments, beginning each show by hitting a Wadaiko drum weighing half a ton, made from a single piece of wood from a 400-year-old tree.

Since their formation, YAMATO has been committed to preserving and respecting the Taiko tradition, while infusing originality and innovation into the ancient practice. And while the members train rigorously, YAMATO imbues each performance with joy and a sense of fun.

“YAMATO believes that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life and the epitome of the Japanese spirit,” says Founder and Artistic Director Masa Ogawa . “YAMATO uses creativity to convert Wadaiko into a performing art that can reverberate in Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world.”

YAMATO had just begun touring their program, Tenmei – Destiny in 2022 when the troupe – along with the rest of the world – was confronted with closures due to a surge in the COVID-19 pandemic. The drummers returned to the Asuka Village, where they never ceased training and creating together. Hinotori – The wings of Phoenix celebrates the troupe’s strength and ability to rise up despite the challenges it has faced throughout its 30-year history. Ogawa writes:

The dawn is beginning to break again. Now is the time to get up.

We have not been defeated Even though we hit the mountain that rises high Even slipped and fallen into deep valleys We’ve gotten back up again and again

Just when we began to over-confidently believe that we could go anywhere

Under the sky, on the Earth

We were confronted by the biggest mountain I’d ever seen We sank into a valley deeper than any valley I’ve ever slid down

In the shadow of the huge mountain In the darkness of the pitch-black valley floor We were swallowed up Despair and Hope

But we did not forget the sun that shone beyond

We continued to struggle and walk And now we see the light again

Now is the time to rise again

Flying high, clothed in sunshine We spread the wings of our burning souls

We are Phoenix

About YAMATO

Founded in 1993 in Japan's Nara Prefecture and presently based in Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture, YAMATO travels all over the word with Japan's traditional Taiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments. Over the past 30 years, the troupe has performed in in 54 countries and regions, giving 4,000 performances for nearly eight million people. They travel with about 40 Taiko drums, ranging in size from 10kg to 500kg. The troupe lives within the Village and engages in daily strength training, instrument practice, and program rehearsal. Always evolving and innovating while respecting the tradition, YAMATO is a modern and relevant ambassador for Taiko drumming and for the Japanese culture from which it derives. Since their formation, YAMATO has been committed to preserving and respecting the Taiko tradition, while infusing originality and innovation into the ancient practice. Notably, YAMATO broke from Taiko's long-standing patriarchy and has always included women in the troupe. And while the members train rigorously, YAMATO imbues each performance with joy and a sense of fun, breaking from the stereotypical stoicism associated with this ancient art form.

World-famous Japanese drumming troupe visits the UK this February celebrating its 40th Anniversary with One Earth Tour 2022: Tsuzumi

Kodo’s boundless skill and discipline is put on full display in the troupe’s live shows that have earned global acclaim for its intensity, virtuosity

The renowned Japanese drumming troupe Kodo is set to embark on its 40 th anniversary visit to Europe in February this year, stopping off in the UK at Basingstoke (9 Feb), Manchester (11 Feb), Birmingham (13 Feb), Sunderland (16 Feb) and Saffron Walden (18 Feb) with its One Earth Tour 2022: Tsuzumi.

This new anniversary production features some pieces composed in the 80’s when the group first formed, but also features some of the newer recently composed work of the younger Kodo members. Explains Kodo performer, Leo Ikenega:

“You could say that the newer compositions of Kodo are merging with the older traditional pieces of Kodo, so you actually get to see the whole history of Kodo in this performance!”

Kodo is one of Japan’s most successful musical exports having performed over 6,500 live shows across five continents. Since its inception in 1981, the group has performed at a Nobel Peace Prize Concert, numerous World Cup shows and taken the stage at countless concert halls around the world.

Central to Kodo’s acclaimed performances is the Taiko; a traditional Japanese drum that is embedded in the country’s ancient culture. The rhythmic sounds of the Taiko can be heard at community festivals and religious ceremonies across the country, but since 1980 Kodo reinvented the Taiko as a performance instrument and kick-started a global obsession with the instrument.

Kodo’s stage performance incorporates the use of numerous Taiko drums of varying sizes from small, hand-held instruments to the centre-piece ‘Odaiko’ drum which measures 1.45 metres. Other traditional instruments including cymbals and bamboo flutes are also featured to produce the group’s traditional yet forward-thinking sound.

According to Kodo, the possibilities of Taiko are endless. The troupe is constantly innovating with sound, texture and rhythm, incorporating elements from other cultures such as Indonesian and Korean music to push the boundaries of the instrument.

Kodo is infamous for its rigorous training regime. As a group of professional musicians, Kodo have certain things in common with Olympic athletes! The troupe is based on the remote Island of Sado off the west coast of Japan and new recruits must undergo a two-year apprenticeship without phones, TV or internet access. Those that make it through the demanding apprenticeship become a member of the troupe that tours the world for around two-thirds of the year.

Kodo’s boundless skill and discipline is put on full display in the troupe’s live shows that have earned global acclaim for its intensity, virtuosity and beauty.

“We hope as many people as possible will take this opportunity to come and see us on this special tour. You really have to see us to understand Kodo (which means heartbeat) – as we literally put everything – including our hearts – into each and every performance to make a connection with the audience. The venue will actually shake!”

Kodo’s mission is to bring Taiko to all corners of the world and spread the message of its community; to find a peaceful and harmonious balance between humanity and the natural world.

Kodo will begin its tour of England on the 9th February 2022 with performances at:

9 Feb: Basingstoke, Anvil Arts

11 Feb: Manchester, Bridgewater Hall

13 Feb: Birmingham, Symphony Hall

16 Feb: Sunderland, The Fire Station

18 Feb: Saffron Walden, Saffron Hall

It was later expanded into 2018 and was also performed from April 2019 and over the year of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Also in 2017, DRUM TAO made their major recording debut from UNIVERSAL MUSIC with a compilation of their work for 25 years, which ranked as one of the top three in the iTunes World Album Ranking in five different countries. In 2018, DRUM TAO performed in the opening ceremony of “Japonisms 2018” in Paris, France and co-starred with the Bolshoi Ballet as the opening act of “Japan Year in Russia” held at The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. DRUM TAO’s honors and awards include “Outstanding Cultural Contribution” from Oita prefecture, “Culture Creators Award” from Taketa city in Oita prefecture, and “The 6th Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Award” and “Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Award” from the Japanese government.

Athletic, Charismatic Japanese Drum Troupe Makes UGA Presents Debut

March 14, 2023

Men and women in traditional Japanese costumes stand in front of a black backdrop.

“A thoroughly enjoyable and exciting show … it moves between visually stunning, musically interesting, powerful and humorous. It’s an outstanding show that the entire family will love.” —Addicted Toronto

This spring, Yamato: The Drummers of Japan tour North America with their new show entitled Hinotori – The Wings of Phoenix . This year marks the 30th anniversary season for the “simply captivating” ( The Evening Post ) Taiko troupe, who have reached nearly 8 million people globally in more than 4,000 performances throughout their history. The troupe brings Hinotori – The Wings of Phoenix to the UGA Performing Arts Center’s Hodgson Concert Hall Friday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m.

“We want to be creative,” says Yamato founder and artistic director Masa Ogawa. The physically powerful troupe of musician-athletes works and lives together as a community in the Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. There they create their own musical compositions, theater productions, sets, lighting design, choreography, performance techniques, costumes, makeup, stage settings, and props. They even make their own bachi sticks used to play the traditional Japanese instruments, beginning each show by hitting a Wadaiko drum weighing half a ton, made from a single piece of wood from a 400-year-old tree.

“Yamato believes that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life and the epitome of the Japanese spirit,” Ogawa says. “Yamato uses creativity to convert Wadaiko into a performing art that can reverberate in Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world.”

Yamato had just begun touring their program, Tenmei – Destiny in 2022 when the troupe — along with the rest of the world — was confronted with closures due to a surge in the COVID-19 pandemic. The drummers returned to the Asuka Village, where they never ceased training and creating together. Hinotori – The wings of Phoenix celebrates the troupe’s strength and ability to rise up despite the challenges it has faced throughout its 30-year history.

About Yamato

Founded in 1993 in Japan’s Nara Prefecture and presently based in Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture, Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Taiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments. Over the past 30 years, the troupe has performed in 54 countries and regions, giving 4,000 performances for nearly eight million people.

They travel with about 40 Taiko drums, ranging in size from 22 lbs to 1100 lbs.

Notably, Yamato broke from Taiko ’s long-standing patriarchy and has always included women in the troupe. And while the members train rigorously, Yamato imbues each performance with joy and a sense of fun, breaking from the stereotypical stoicism associated with this ancient art form.

This UGA Presents performance is supported by Janet Rodekohr and Clay and Amie Dunford.

Hands-on drum museum in tokyo lets visitors bang away.

At the Miyamoto-Unosuke Drum Museum in Tokyo, visitors don’t just look, they make themselves heard.

This museum allows you to beat drums from around the world and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of drumming. This unique interactive experience is a must-see for any music enthusiast or cultural explorer.

Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten, a 150-year-old maker of taiko, mikoshi shrines and festival equipment, opened the museum in 1988. Today, it displays 800 drums and more than 3,000 books collected from around the world.

Prepare to embark on a global journey as you explore the museum on the fourth floor of the Nishiasakusa building in the city’s Taito ward.

You'll find about 800 drums, some playable, at the Miyamoto-Unosuke Drum Museum in Tokyo.

The tour is self-guided, and the displays have English text. The museum is only one small room, but visitors may make the most out of their experience in about 30 minutes.

Displays are organized by region, showcasing the rich diversity of drumming traditions from Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, South Asia, East Asia, North America and Oceania. Each regional display offers a glimpse into the drums’ production, cultural significance and history.

The Oceania display had the most unique items, including the Apa drum from Papua New Guinea, which is carved from wood with a opossum or lizard-skin drumhead and is shaped like a crocodile. And the Kundu, an hourglass drum used during religious ceremonies and celebrations, with carved handles with open-mouthed crocodiles, human faces or dancers.

Drums that are marked with an eighth note can be played, which is encouraged by the staff.

Visitors can play these steel pan drums from Trinidad at the Miyamoto-Unosuke Drum Museum in Tokyo.

The one that was the most fun to play for me was the steel pan drum from Trinidad. Displayed above the drum is the scale that indicates what note will play when you hit it.

Next to each display is a CD from which visitors may select and play tracks that are examples of music played on the various drums on display.

A Native American powwow drum from the United States is one of the many items on display at the Miyamoto-Unosuke Drum Museum in Tokyo.

New York Today

A royal visit to the city that was once called new amsterdam.

Among other stops in New York, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will tour an exhibit focused on 400 years of Dutch history.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll get details of a royal visit to New York City. We’ll also find out what Mayor Eric Adams said when asked about pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands walking next to each other. The king is wearing a suit, while the queen is wearing a bright red outfit with a matching floral headpiece.

They did not arrive in the United States the way many couples do — the husband, who has a pilot’s license, was in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 jet, serving as the co-pilot for at least part of the flight from Europe.

Still, on their outing in New York City today, the pair, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, will do what many tourists do. They will stroll along the High Line and go to a museum.

But they said the trip had a purpose — emphasizing ties between the Netherlands and the United States and strengthening economic connections. The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Netherlands ranked third in direct investment in the United States with $617.1 billion at the end of 2022, after Japan ($712 billion) and the United Kingdom ($663.4 billion).

So the royals’ itinerary includes a midday event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard about business startups and ways to accelerate clean technology .

They will also go on a tour of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they will “discuss urban challenges such as climate action, affordable housing and societal resilience” with community leaders, according to the Dutch government. Their day will end with a reception at Hudson Yards in Manhattan; the king and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to speak there.

The trip is not the royals’ first visit to New York. Willem-Alexander and Máxima visited in 2009, when he was the crown prince (he ascended to the throne in 2013). Máxima had lived in New York from 1996 to 2000 when she was an investment banker.

They arrived in New York City after two days in Georgia and one in Albany. (Willem-Alexander flew the plane there, too, according to a spokeswoman for the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.) Willem-Alexander’s focus was on jobs during a session at a nanotechnology center in Albany that describes itself as the largest nonprofit semiconductor research-and-development facility in the country . Willem-Alexander was all business in his brief remarks there, saying that trade with the Netherlands accounted for 57,000 jobs in New York State.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that “New York became what it is because of the Dutch” and mentioned names like Brooklyn and the New York Knicks that have Dutch roots. She also referred to the Schuyler mansion in Albany, where Elizabeth Schuyler grew up. Of the three daughters in the household — familiar to theatergoers who’ve seen “Hamilton” — she was the one who married the man whose portrait is on the $10 bill.

Later, as the king looked on, Hochul and a Dutch trade official signed a memorandum of understanding that confirmed shared interests in advancing semiconductor research and development.

Today, after their stops in Brooklyn, Willem-Alexander and Máxima will walk through an exhibition commemorating 400 years of Dutch history in New York at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side. The exhibition includes a 1626 letter that describes the “purchase” of Manhattan from Native Americans for 60 guilders, which later was said to have been $24.

The exhibition also includes a letter from three chiefs of contemporary Lenape communities whose ancestors lived in Manhattan when the Dutch arrived with hopes of establishing a Dutch republic in North America. And the exhibition displays a map of New Amsterdam, called the Castello Plan, that was painted around 1660, long before Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British.

So what do you say when a king and queen cross the threshold?

“I’m going to invite them to have a look at Dutch history, beginning at the very beginning,” said Louise Mirrer, the president and chief executive of the historical society .

“What’s eye-opening is to see evidence that the Dutch actually did believe they had purchased Manhattan from the Lenape,” she said. “The letter really says something about how cultures can understand each other incorrectly, or misunderstand one another. Obviously, history bore out how the misunderstanding was disadvantageous to the Lenape.”

Enjoy a sunny day in the mid-80s. The evening should be mostly clear, with temperatures in the low 70s.

Adams praised a reporter’s ‘summer body’

Mayor Eric Adams told a journalist who asked him about pro-Palestinian demonstrations that it looked as if he had been working out and complimented the reporter’s “summer body.”

One of the mayor’s top female advisers, sitting nearby at City Hall, shook her head in disbelief. Another deputy mayor looked down and covered her eyes.

My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons writes that the remark was not unusual for Adams. He often comments on people’s physical appearance or clothing. And while he speaks proudly about the number of top cabinet officials who are women, he has also made the point to note that they lead while wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, with their signature red-soled heels.

This was not the first time that Adams had singled out the reporter he said had a “summer body” — Pete Cuddihy, an intern at Fox News. At a news conference in March, when Cuddihy asked about the city’s housing crisis, the mayor said, “I like that turtleneck — people don’t wear turtlenecks anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Fox News sent a statement from Cuddihy that said: “Speaking only about my interaction on June 11 with Mayor Adams, I felt his comments towards me were friendly, and I did not feel uncomfortable.”

Adams is far from the only notable elected official who has been criticized for making comments that seem inappropriate. President Biden has made remarks about people’s physical appearance; Donald Trump often mocks people’s physical appearance and was found liable in a civil trial for sexually abusing the writer E. Jean Carroll. And the Justice Department found that Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, subjected female employees to a “sexually hostile work environment,” made unwanted comments and gave preferential treatment to some employees based on their physical appearance.

Adams, a Democrat, was himself accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a colleague in 1993 when he was a police officer.

Fabien Levy, a deputy mayor and Adams’s chief spokesman, said the mayor “would never intentionally make someone feel uncomfortable. He’s a warm and engaging person who talks to New Yorkers the way any regular New Yorker speaks to one another.”

METROPOLITAN diary

Dear Diary:

Anyone who lived or worked in Midtown Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s knew Gene Palma as the guy who “played” Sixth Avenue. He even had a cameo in “Taxi Driver.”

With shoe-polish blackened hair and heavy makeup, Gene would play his drum on the sidewalk. Sometimes, he would bang his sticks on newspaper vending machines, or sit on the curb and play the street itself.

In the winter, to avoid the frigid north wind that swept down the avenues, he would move onto the side streets. Once, when I saw him on 52nd Street, I asked why he moved onto the side streets every winter.

“The sound’s better,” he said.
