Japanese tourist molested on Delhi street says she ‘still loves everything about India’

japanese tourist india reddit

A Japanese tourist who was seen in a viral video being molested by an unruly mob of men and boys on a street in New Delhi has said she holds no grudges over what happened to her, and that she still loves “everything about India”.

“I have been there many times on holiday, and it is a country brimming with charms,” the 22-year-old woman, identified in her social media accounts as Megumiko, said in a Twitter post.

She said India is a wonderful country, and that she cannot bring herself to hate it, despite her recent experience there.

“India and Japan will forever be ‘tomodachi’ (friends),” she said.

Megumiko, a spa manager from Osaka, said she was more traumatised by reactions to the incident than by what actually happened to her.

In the 24-second video, a rowdy group of men and boys can be seen dousing her with coloured water and powder on a street in Delhi’s Paharganj area last Wednesday as they shouted, “Happy Holi”, as is tradition during the Hindu festival of Holi.

But they were also groping her, touching her chest, and pushing her around, even as she tried to flee from them, telling them repeatedly, “itai, itai”, which is Japanese for “it hurts”.

A boy smashed an egg on her head.

She slapped a man who tried to grab her chest, and then quickly ran to an alley.

Megumiko said she was terrified after seeing that her tweet with the video was being retweeted and shared privately “beyond my imagination”.

“While it may be the opinion of a few people, I am not used to being criticised or threatened, and this became psychologically unbearable,” she said.

Megumiko said she was, for now, pausing all her social media accounts.

She said she was sorry that the video seemed to have put Holi and India under harsh scrutiny.

Holi is celebrated in India to mark the beginning of spring after a long winter.

In the streets, the celebrations are often marked by ribald language and behaviour as it’s typically regarded as an “anything goes” holiday.

Megumiko said she knew the risks she was taking when she set out on that day, as all of India was celebrating Holi.

“I had heard it was very dangerous for a woman to go out alone during the daytime at the Holi festival,” she said.

She said she went out with 35 friends, thinking there was safety in numbers.

“Unfortunately, this kind of situation happened,” she added.

Megumiko said she was taking responsibility for the decisions she made that day.

She said she knew she and her friends were going to “one of the most unsafe places in India”.

But she also acknowledged that she went there willingly. “I participated in the festival,” she added.

She said she hopes people would understand that she “was not trying to convey the abnormalities and damages of the Holi festival”.

“I sincerely apologise for causing concern to many people through the videos and on Twitter. My original intent was to convey the positive and fun sides of India. But, in the end, I instead caused a lot of concern and anxiety in many ways, for which I apologise,” she added.

Still, she said she appreciated police efforts to check excesses that lead to violence during Holi, especially those targeting women.

“I anticipate that starting from next year’s Holi festival, harassment against women will decrease significantly.”

The Japanese woman, whose video of being groped by a group of men in Delhi's Paharganj area on Holi went viral on Twitter , took to the microblogging platform Twitter on Saturday to apologise to those who were offended by the video and said she loved India irrespective of what happened to her during the festival of colours.

In a long Twitter thread posted in Japanese on Saturday, the woman said she originally posted the video but was terrified when the video went viral and deleted it. "We sincerely apologise to those who were offended by the video," the woman wrote in Japanese.

According to the Japanese woman, she had heard that it was dangerous for a woman to venture out during Holi. She was with a group of 35 friends when a group of men harassed her and forcefully smeared colours on her.

The Japanese woman said the video was taken accidentally by a Japanese friend of hers and there was no intention of conveying anything negative about Holi.

"The original Holi festival is a wonderful and fun traditional festival with the purpose of celebrating the arrival of spring by pouring coloured powder and water on each other and enjoying it regardless of skin colour or social status," she wrote.

"I would like to express my sincere apologies for causing concern and anxiety in many ways, even though my goal was to convey the positive aspects and joys of India," she added.

Expressing confidence in police action, the woman said she loved everything about India and has been to India many times. "It's a wonderful country that you can't hate even if an incident like this happens," she wrote.

The Japanese woman has left India and has now gone to Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police took cognisance of the viral video and although no complaint was filed in the case, the police apprehended three youths, including a juvenile, and booked them under Sector 354 (attempt to outrage modesty of woman) of the IPC.

A 12-Day Detailed Itinerary For Japan Under ₹80,000 Trip Cost

A 12-Day Detailed Itinerary For Japan Under ₹80,000 Trip Cost

I was always fancied by Japan in multiple ways. And after having been enticed by its culture and food through videos for over a year, I finally decided to experience its intrinsic culture in person. From a truly delectable traditional cuisine to the awe-inspiring Bullet train, it is amazing how Japan has managed to tie tradition and modernity with a single thread. It’s a perfect place for solo travellers, friends, couples and even families. Despite the language barrier, Japan surely knows how to mesmerize you.

So, if you’re someone who has been fascinated by Japanese culture, or if you’ve grown up watching Anime, then count me as your friend! I am Yogita Chainani, a travel lover, and I went for a 12-day trip to Japan along with my sister in April 2019. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara, and this is how we planned our trip at ₹80,000. Here is our itinerary for Japan.

Things To Keep In Mind While Planning A Trip To Japan

Flight Cost: We were tracking the flight costs for over a month before finally booking it. We booked the flight tickets through SkyScanner, and the return flights cost us ₹ 26,000 per person.

Visa: When it comes to Visa, the process was quite simple. We paid ₹500 per person for a single entry visa, which was valid for a month.

Also Read: Japanese Visa for Indians, Indian Passport: Types, Application Fee, Form, Requirements And Visa On Arrival

Stay: Keeping the budget in mind, we chose to stay in a hostel over a hotel. For Tokyo, we booked the DEN hostel, which is nestled in the Kanda area of Tokyo and is around 50 minutes from Haneda airport. While travelling for 6 nights and 7 days, we paid ₹10,000 per head, which is decent for the quality of the place. In Kyoto, we booked the Len Kyoto hostel, and for 4 nights and 5 days where we paid ₹8,000 per head. As for Nara, we made a day trip, so we didn’t have to make any bookings. We used the HostelWorld app to book both the hostels.

Transfers: Travelling in and around Japan is expensive. Hence, to save up on the travelling cost, we had bought a Japan Rail Pass for ₹18,000. The pass covered most of our travel expenses in the country. Right from local JR lines to selected Bullet train rides, everything got covered with this pass. Apart from this, for private buses and metros, we spent an additional ₹5,000 per person. For transfers from the airport to the hostel in Tokyo, we took a limousine bus, which cost ₹650 per person.

Food: We set a budget, and roughly spent ₹4,000 (₹2,000 per person), which is about 6000 Japanese yen on food per day. Sometimes it was a bit more, and sometimes it was less. So, our overall food cost was ₹ 20,000 per person, which also included drinks.

Itinerary for Japan

Best Time to Visit Japan: Japan is known for its Cherry Blossom season and if you intend to visit this futuristic country, then plan your trip between March-May. Not only March to May, but September to January is also an ideal time to visit Japan. The weather is quite pleasant, humidity is low, and the cold climate makes it easy for travellers to explore the place throughout the day. I travelled to Japan in April, and here’s my 12-days, day by day itinerary.

We boarded the 11PM flight from Terminal 2- Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai to Singapore Changi Airport, from where we took a connecting flight to Haneda Airport, Japan. We flew with Singapore Airlines, and I must say, it’s my favourite. The flight from Mumbai to Singapore was about 5 hours and 40 minutes. We had about an hour and 10 minutes of layover in Singapore, and the flight from here to Haneda was about 7 hours and 30 minutes. After reaching Haneda airport, we cleared our immigration, activated our Japan Rail Pass and took a limousine bus to reach Tokyo. The bus ticket cost us ₹630 per person.

We checked in the hostel, DEN, on Day 1 and passed out immediately. The next day, we woke up early with the faint rays of the sun, got ready and spoke to our hostel manager, who guided us to the nearest metro station. Kanda metro station was at a walking distance from the hostel. On our way, we grabbed some hot coffee, sandwiches and a bottle of water from a nearby Seven-Eleven. These are convenience stores that are open 24×7.

I must say Seven-Eleven is a hit in Japan, and right from a cup of Joe to hearty Ramen meals, you can find everything at an affordable rate. After sipping some coffee, we took a train to Harajuku station. Our first spot of the day was Takeshita Dori, which is located at a walking distance from Harajuku.

Itinerary for Japan

Takeshita Dori will take you one step closer to the famous Japanese Pop and Kawaii Culture. Right from street artists to a plethora of picturesque cafes and side stalls, Takeshita is a street that you cannot miss. And while you are there, don’t forget to try the delicious crepes. From Chocolate to Bacon Crepe, there are tonnes of options to choose from. We had a lip-smacking crepe at Santa Monica Crepe, and it was worth every bite.

Itinerary for Japan

After spending a good 2-3 hours in Takeshita Dori, we explored the Harajuku area of Tokyo. For lunch, we kept it light and ate some Mozzarella Sticks from a roadside stall while sipping on some famous Japanese bubble tea. At around 5PM, we headed to the famous Meiji Jingu Shrine, which is known for its unmatchable beauty. The entry to the shrine is free, and the entrance from the massive Torii gate for this shrine will inevitably transport you to a different world.

Itinerary for Japan

After getting bewitched by the spellbinding magnificence of this shrine, we made our way back to Harajuku. We went for dinner to Cafe Lagoon in Harajuku and ended our night on a merry note. Post that- we headed back to our accommodation.

For us, Day 3 was all about exploring the culture of Japan. Hence, we decided to explore the Asakusa area of Tokyo. We grabbed some coffee from Seven-Eleven and headed to Kanda station to board a metro for Asakusa. We got down at Asakusa station and walked for 10 minutes to reach the pristine Sensoji Temple and I can never forget that sight. Sensoji is one of the oldest temples in Japan, and the entry to the temple is free.

Itinerary for Japan

We walked around the temple, observed the locals for a while and headed to Nakamise Dori, which was just 2 minutes from the Sensoji Temple.

Nakamise Dori is known for its local cuisine, souvenirs shops and also gives you a stellar view of the Tokyo sky tree. By the time we finished exploring the street, it was already lunchtime. So we gave local Japanese cuisines a try and savoured some red bean, Hello Kitty Pancakes and Ramen in Nakamise Dori.

Post that, we headed straight to the Tourist Information Center of Japan, which again was a short walk from the temple. Tourist Information is also famous as an observatory. The entry to the observatory was free.

Itinerary for Japan

We bought some coffee from the cafe and observed the magnificent Tokyo skyline from the top. It was around 6:30 pm, and we decided to explore more of Asakusa. We manoeuvred around the area and headed back to the hostel by 12:30 am.

After spending three glorious days in Japan, Tokyo had already become home. We woke up with lots of excitement, chit-chatted with our fellow hostellers and ventured out to visit the famous and the most luxurious street of Japan, Ginza. Right from Louis Vuitton to Prada, you’ll find all the high-end stores in here. We shopped a bit from Gap and Adidas, we got some top-notch quality products at insane prices.

Itinerary for Japan

After exploring Ginza, we went to Shibuya. While Shibuya is known for the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, it’s also known for Hachiko Statue, the beautiful Yoyogi Park and theme cafes. We explored the area, spent some time at Yoyogi Park and by that time, it was already evening. So we headed straight to witness the iconic Shibuya crossing- a crossing where hundreds of people – and at times thousands of people – cross at a time, coming from all directions at once.

Itinerary for Japan

Once done enjoying the Shibuya crossing, we shopped a bit from Zara and Forever 21 and headed to TGIF in Shibuya. We ate, shot some pictures for the gram and enjoyed the nightlife in Shibuya.

On day 5, we decided to take it a bit slow. We chilled in our hostel for a while, interacted with fellow travellers from London, South Korea and Canada, and left the hostel at around 1PM for Shinjuku. We visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which again is a famous observatory in Tokyo, and on a clear day, you get to witness the sight of Mount. Fuji from the observatory.

Itinerary for Japan

The entry to the observatory was free. We spent some time appreciating the majestic Tokyo skyline and then explored Shinjuku for a while before catching a bus for Akihabara.

Itinerary for Japan

If you love Anime and arcade games, then Akihabara is for you. I wanted to win at least one Dragonball toy, but I couldn’t, hard luck!  After the gaming session, we went to the famous Yodobashi Camera centre in Akihabara and shopped for some Bluetooth headphones. We ended the night by eating pizza, ramen and sipping some sake in Akihabara.

This was the day when I shopped till I dropped, and I am not kidding. I had researched about outlet malls in Tokyo and had decided to buy things from there itself. The outlet mall was on the outskirts of Tokyo, but the ride was completely worth it. We boarded a train for Mitsui Outlet Mall at Tokyo Station and got down at Kaihin-Makuhari Station. From there the outlet mall was at a walking distance. There was a 60% off deal going on for all items in the mall. I treated myself to a Michael Kors wallet at flat 90% off.

Itinerary for Japan

We spent around 8 hours in the mall, and in the end, we were too exhausted to go anywhere else, so we ate something at McDonald’s, and headed back to our hostel.

It was our last day in Tokyo, and we wanted to make the most of it. We explored our neighbourhood, went to see the Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower.  For us, we didn’t buy a ticket for the observatory since we had already enjoyed a free view of the majestic skyline from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku. We visited a few cafes, tried some Matcha Ice Cream and headed back to the hostel.

The time had arrived to bid adieu to the vibrant city of Tokyo. With heavy hearts and a bucket full of memories to cherish for eternity, we checked out from our hostel, brought some snacks for our train ride and headed to Tokyo Station. And finally, we boarded the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto.

Itinerary for Japan

It was a smooth and pleasant ride, and guess what – the bullet train had wifi too!

We reached Kyoto at around 5PM, and from there caught a bus for Kawaramachi- the area where our hostel was. It was 6 pm when we reached the hostel, we checked in, freshened up, spoke to our roommates and headed out to explore the Kawaramachi area of Kyoto.

Itinerary for Japan

For dinner, we ate some food at the hostel bar and called it a night.

After exploring the nightlife and pop culture of Tokyo, it was time to experience a mellow version of Japan by exploring its former capital, Kyoto. We had planned a list of things, and hence we ventured out at 7.30AM itself.

We grabbed a bite from the nearby Seven-Eleven and headed straight to the salient Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest. The forest is both locally famous and world-renowned and the entry is free.

Itinerary for Japan

From dense forests to cherry blossoms to throbbing autumn Kyoto colours, Arashiyama was a visual delight during this season. We explored the tranquil forest area and visited a few other spots in the nearby locality.

Itinerary for Japan

Post that we headed to the famous Nishiki Market. Almost 400 years old, this place is a fresh food market and is lined with over a hundred restaurants and shops. The market was lively and allowed us to taste Japan’s culinary culture at its finest. After savouring some food and drinking some OG bubble tea, we headed back to our hostel, which was at a walking distance from the market.

We left early and headed to Fushimi Inari. This place is known for its tunnels of more than 10,000 closely-spaced orange torii gates that wind over the hills of Mt. Inari beyond the entrance to the shrine.

Itinerary for Japan

One can also dress like Geisha and explore this beautiful place. We went a bit late to this place and couldn’t grab good pictures.  But if you want to take some fab shots for the gram, then try visiting this place as early as possible.

Itinerary for Japan

After getting spellbind by the captivating beauty of this place, we headed to the famous Gion district of Kyoto. We manoeuvred around and got to know more about Geisha culture while exploring some beautiful alleys of Gion district.

We celebrated our time in Kyoto by tasting some Japanese beer and absorbed the traditional culture on the banks of Kyoto’s scenic main waterway. Post that, we went to the famous Pontocho Alley, where traditional culture and Geisha still thrive.

It was officially our last day in Kyoto. And since we were short on time, we boarded a train to Nara, which is known for its slow-paced life. On the way to Nara, we enjoyed the sight of the beautiful fields and quaint villages of Japan.

Itinerary for Japan

We visited the famous Kasuga Grand Shrine and also explored the old  Nara market. After exploring the streets of Nara for a few hours, we headed back to Kyoto. Post that, we ate something, packed our bags and slept early that day.

We checked out of our hostel in Kyoto and headed to Kyoto station. We caught our bullet train for Tokyo station. After reaching Tokyo station, we again took an Airport liner for the Haneda Airport terminal. We spent the final few hours at the Haneda airport before bidding goodbye to the exalted country of Japan.

Things I haven’t included: I went a bit crazy with shopping, so haven’t included the detailed pricing for the same.

Final Thoughts on Japan:

Japan has been exceptional in distinct ways. Just in 13 days, this country managed to give me the memories of a lifetime.

Itinerary for Japan

Japan will always have my heart. It is a country that taught me language is just a medium of communication. And people can still help each other without knowing the language. The amicable town of Kyoto made me fall in love with the culture, while Tokyo made me feel livelier than ever.

Things To Remember:

We wanted to visit Robot Cafe, but couldn’t, because we didn’t know that the tickets had to be booked online at least 15 days in advance. So if you intend to visit Robot Cafe, book your tickets in advance.

If you are planning to go in March or April, do carry a thick jacket and an umbrella with you. The weather gets unpredictable at times, and you don’t want to freeze in the cold.

We visited Japan in April, which is also a month where people across the country get a one-week holiday, it’s known as their Golden week. Hence, we skipped crowded cafes and Disneyland.

People in Japan are warm, helpful and kind. So when in doubt, always ask for help!

Lastly, do not litter on the streets and trains; it’s highly looked down upon. Also, if possible, avoid taking calls on the train- it’s considered a bit rude.

A Japanese woman was sexually assaulted by a group of men during the celebration of the Hindu festival of Holi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The young woman could be seen in a video being groped by five or six men who forcefully smeared her face with colours while screaming "happy Holi".

The video, now viral on Twitter, showed a man also smashing an egg on the woman's head as she got shoved around.

The woman could be heard saying "bye-bye" as she attempted to escape the crowd.

Eventually, the woman slapped another woman who tried to get hold of her while she went into a narrow ally.

The incident reportedly took place in the capital's Paharganj area.

The video has sparked outrage about women's safety during the spring festival, where women have often complained about being harassed and groped by men under the pretext of applying colours.

No complaint or call regarding any misbehaviour with any foreigner was received by the local police station, Delhi police said in a statement.

An email has been sent to the Japanese embassy for details of the woman seen in the video, the police added.

Authorities were trying to establish the identity of the men seen in the video through local intelligence, it added.

Swati Maliwal, the chair for Delhi Commission for Women, called the incident "completely shameful behaviour" and said she is issuing a notice to Delhi police to arrest the perpetrators.

“The women protesting the molestation and harassment during Holi is not defaming the religion or festival. The men who doing it, are. Go after them,” wrote Twitter user Priyashmita Guha.

In a separate incident, a 65-year-old woman in the eastern state of Jharkhand was beaten to death by a group of six people for allegedly stopping them from applying colours to her son.

The incident took place during Holi when the woman, identified as Bucchi Devi, got into an altercation with the group and stopped them from applying colours to her son Murari.

The mother and her son were thrashed by the group till the victims lost consciousness, the local police said. Murari woke up to find his mother lying dead, according to reports.

A 10 day backpacking trip to Japan for an Indian traveler

Photo of Sagar Pradhan

Photo of A 10 day backpacking trip to Japan for an Indian traveler 1/1 by Sagar Pradhan

'Konnichiwa!!!'

As an Indian traveler it is believed the world is very rude towards us. We are made to believe that people from other countries are read to racially abuse us and probably throw us out of hotels.

Well... Japan shattered this image. And how !!!! Japanese people are one of the sweetest people I have come across on the Earth. Extremely humble, hard working and having an extreme care for convenience of others, Japanese people made us fall in love with this beautiful country.

Also, Japan is only expensive when you spend like a millionaire. Japan otherwise gives a lot of budget options for a backpacker budget traveler to enjoy !!!

Below mentioned is step by step guide to ten days in Japan. The itinerary is Jam packed with day to day activity to ensure maximum value for time allocated. :P

Japan is a country filled with contrasts between modern society and ancient traditions. Words of warning: This itinerary packs a lot in, and can feel a bit rushed. We think this would be ideally spread across 10 days.

April is often considered the best time to visit Japan because the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in most regions of the country and the weather is pleasantly mild.

Please note all expenses are inclusive of a couple (2 people) travelling together...

TOURIST VISA - Required Documents

1.Application with Photo - Application from website

3.Travel Booking (Travel itinerary and Hotel Booking); 4.Document to prove ability to pay for travel expenses - (a)Latest Income Tax Return; (b) Bank Statements of last 6 months

Visa Fees for Indian nationals:

Single or multiple entry visa: Rs.440 and Transit visa: Rs.40

Things to remember:

Tokyo, Japan is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India

Most metro stations in Tokyo have English signs, but the system can get confusing. Get a free map beforehand in order not to get lost. Also, remember that public transportation isn’t working 24/7 in Tokyo, so catch the last train before 11pm.

As many streets have no name and not everyone speaks English consider renting a wireless router that will allow you to use google maps.

It can be surprisingly difficult to find an ATM that accepts foreign cards, even in Tokyo. The easiest place to get money is an ATM at 7-Eleven.

There is no tipping when eating out in Japan.

If you enjoyed your dining experience and want to express your gratitude or compliment the chef/service staff, a friendly "Gochiso-sama-deshita" will do.

You can get around almost everywhere in Tokyo with JR trains and Tokyo metro subway lines. Get a "Suica" or "Pasmo" rechargeable card, which you can also use at some shops.

If you need help with directions, you can probably find someone to assist you (in English) at a kōban police box, which you'll find close to most train stations.

Getting around without speaking Japanese is not as scary as you may think. Most people are helpful, and little phrases like "sumimasen" (excuse me) and "arigato" (thank you) go a long way.

Japan Rail Pass:

Information is on passes is available online at www.japanrailpass.net and www.japanrail.com .

Cost:36,000/- INR

• You can use the JR pass to travel between Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and many other cities. The pass is good on virtually all JR routes, including the high-speed trains, but not on the ultra-high-speed Nozomi.

• Within Tokyo, you can use the pass on the JR Yamanote line, which makes a circle around central Tokyo, but not on the subways. Within Kyoto, the JR pass is practically useless. Within the Hiroshima area, the JR pass will take you to Miyajima.

• After you arrive in Japan, you exchange the voucher for a pass and set the date that the pass begins. When you do the exchange, you can get all your seat reservations. If you don't get a seat reservation, you can get on the train and find a seat (if available) in an unreserved car.

• With a Rail Pass, you can make seat reservations for free, which otherwise costs ¥510 ($4.25/£2.10) per ride on the Shinkansen.

• The rail pass entitles you to unlimited travel on all JR train lines including the Shinkansen (except, regrettably, the Nozomi Super Express), as well as on most JR buses and the JR ferry to Miyajima.

• The standard Japan Rail Pass is available only to foreigners visiting Japan as tourists and can be purchased only outside Japan.

• Upon purchasing your pass, you'll be issued a voucher (called an Exchange Order), which you'll then exchange for the pass itself after you arrive in Japan. Note that once you purchase your Exchange Order, you must exchange it in Japan for the pass itself within 3 months of the date of issue of the Exchange Order. When obtaining your actual pass, you must then specify the date you wish to start using the pass within a 1-month period.

• Once You've Arrived -- In Japan, you can exchange your voucher for a Japan Rail Pass at more than 40 JR stations that have Japan Rail Pass exchange offices, at which time you must present your passport and specify the date you wish to begin using the pass; most offices are open daily from 10am to 6 or 7pm, some even longer.

• At both Narita Airport (daily 6:30am-9:45pm) and Kansai International Airport (daily 5:30am-11pm), you can pick up Japan Rail Passes at either the Travel Service Center or the Ticket Office

Android device users with any 'widgets' on their home screens that require a data connection to update may utilise the data connection more frequently than iOS devices such as ipod/iphone/ipad

They deliver a device to your hotel or airport. At that time, they give a return envelope.

Any mailbox is OK. You can find it also at airports. If you have trouble, they will support you in English. The important thing is that you need to order at least 3 days before of pick up date.

Japan Suica Card

Cost:10,000/- INR

Japan’s Suica and Pasmo cards are your ticket to ride on Tokyo’s JR trains, private subway lines and Narita’s N’EX express airport train.

Add tap-and-go payment at railway kiosks, convenience stores, buses, taxis and even vending machines, plus other public transport systems in a dozen other parts of the country, and you can see why one of these prepaid ‘e-money’ cards is almost a must-have for business travellers to Japan.

Suica vs Pasmo: which card should you get?

There’s no real difference between Suica and Pasmo cards except that Suica belongs to Japan’s national train operator JR while Pasmo is offered supported by a number of private railway operators.

Each cards works on both train networks, and a variety of train and bus networks in other Japanese cities, so you only need one card to carry around.

You can pick up a Suica card for ¥2,000 ($A22) or a Pasmo for ¥1,500 (A$17) from smartcard ticket machines at most train stations in Tokyo.

Those prices include a refundable ¥500 deposit, so depending on which card you buy you’ll have either ¥1,500 or ¥1,000 as credit.

Train fares for shuttling around central Tokyo are fairly low, at between ¥160 and ¥170 (around A$1.85), so that balance should be enough for a few days.

When buying either card you’ll have the option to register it via the ticket machine’s touchscreen. It’s a quick process which means the card’s balance will be refunded if you lose the card.

ards work with other public transport systems across Japan

Topping up your Suica or Pasmo card

Your card's balance is displayed as you check through a turnstile, or you can just tap it on a vending machine without making a purchase.

To add value to your Suica or Pasmo card, look for a smartcard ticket machines at any railway station.

It’s a quick process but you’ll need to have a few Yen notes on hand (the minimum reload is ¥1,000) as the ticket machines don’t accept credit cards.

Getting a refund on your Suica or Pasmo card

When it’s time to head home, you can get a refund on the balance of your Suica or Pasmo card provided you have conversational Japanese language skills. Yes, there’s always a catch!

Just front up to the station manager’s office at any train station in Tokyo. A ¥210 processing fee will be deducted from your card’s balance but the rest, along with the ¥500 deposit, will be handed back to you in cash.

Activate JR Rail pass- Day 4

KYOTO [ Departure track No.8 ] 6 AM - JR Nara Line Local for NARA- 7.20 AM

JR Nara Line: Y690, 45 minutes by express (kaisoku), 70 minutes by local (futsu), departs from JR Kyoto Station in Kyoto and arrives at JR Nara Station in Nara

You’ll most likely start this itinerary at Kintetsu Nara or JR Nara Stations. Either way, get yourself to the fountain just up the stairs from Kintetsu Nara Station to begin this walk.

Walk up Nobori-oji Street. You’ll start to encounter Nara’s famous sacred deer as you go.

Use the underground crossings to get to the northeast corner of the Nobori-oji/Route 169. Walk from there to Isui-en Garden. If you have time, pop into the free and excellent Yoshiki-en next door.

Walk from Isui-en along the backstreets to Todai-ji Temple. Before entering the Daibutsu-den Hall to see the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), walk a little south to check out the Nandai-mon Gate, with its two huge guardian figures.

Enter the Daibutsu-den. Take your time marveling at the Daibutsu and then exit the Daibutsu-den.

Walk along the east wall of the Daibutsu-den and then go up the path that turns up to the right just past the small pond to reach Nigatsu-do Hall.

Check out Nigatsu-do and then walk in the direction of the base of Wakakusa-yama. If you’re traveling at a normal pace, you’ll probably reach this area around lunchtime. See my list of Places To

Eat In Nara for some lunch picks in this area.

Follow the narrow pathways through the forest to Kasuga-Taisha Shrine.

Follow the main path from Kasuga-Taisha all the way west until you reach Kofuku-ji Temple. If you haven’t eaten lunch yet, you’ll find lots of place in the shopping streets nearby (in Downtown Nara and Naramachi)

In the afternoon, make a loop south through Naramachi, checking out Sarusawa-no-ike Pond, Koshi-no-Ie and the shops and galleries of the area.

Return to your lodgings or one of the main train stations.

Activate JR Rail pass- Day 5

KYOTO [ Departure track No.13 ] 7 AM HIROSHIMA [ Arrival track No.12 ] 9.10 AM- SHINKANSEN HIKARI 491

Start/9:30am: Hiroshima Station- After arriving at Hiroshima Station, grab a map at the Tourist Information Center in the station and maybe a cup of coffee. Then, leave via the south exit and head to the street tram stop in front of the station (make sure you have some change to cover the Y160 fare). Take tram #2 or #6 and get off at Genbaku-domu-mae (A-Bomb Dome) about 10 minutes later.

9:45am: Atomic Bomb Dome- You can easily see the famous Atomic Bomb Dome from where you get off the tram. Take some time to observe this sobering sight, then cross nearby Motoyasu-bashi Bridge across the Motoyasu-gawa River and enter the Peace Memorial Park.

10:30am: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum- I suggest heading straight through the Peace Memorial Park to the Peace Memorial Museum because you want to get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds that descend on the museum as the day progresses. Allow about 90 minutes to explore the museum thoroughly.

Return to Hiroshima Station- To reach the ferry port from Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (25 minutes, 410 yen one way, covered by the Japan Rail Pass).

Arrive Miyajima - Upon arrival on the island, it’s very easy to get oriented. Just walk south along the shoreline in the direction of the famous “floating shrine gate.” Walking from the pier, this means going to your right.

12 PM : Itsukushima-jinja Shrine- Take some time to explore Itsukushima-jinja Shrine and pose for the obligatory photo of yourself with the floating shrine gate in the background.

1:00Pm: Daisho-in Temple- From Itsukushima-jinja, it’s an easy 10-minute walk up to Daisho-in Temple. It’s clearly marked and you can usually just follow the crowds. Take a good hour to explore the temple.

2 PM : Momiji-dani-koen Park- After lunch, follow the small Mitarai-gawa River up into Momiji-dani-koen Park. Mt. Misen via Miyajima Ropeway- Continue up the valley, following the river, to reach the base station of the Miyajima Ropeway. Take the gondola/cable car up to the top station, near the summit of Mt. Misen. Walk from the top station for about 30 minutes to reach the true summit and check out the temples, shrines and views there. From the Niomon Gate down to Daisho-in Temple takes about an hour.

4pm: Finish in the village- If you walk down from Mt. Misen at a leisurely pace, you’ll be back in the village around 4pm. If you’re staying the night on Miyajima, return to your lodgings. Otherwise, head to the piers for a ferry back to the mainland (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park or Miyajima-guchi and on to Hiroshima).

9:00am: Enter Tenryu-ji Temple and explore the temple.

10:00am: Leave Tenryu-ji Temple by the north gate, which will bring you into the famed Bamboo Forest. Explore the Bamboo Forest for about half an hour.

10:30am: Leave the Bamboo Forest and enter Okochi-Sanso Villa.

11:30am: Leave Okochi-Sanso Villa and return to central Arashiyama. Eat a simple lunch of noodles or rice in one of the shokudo (simple eateries) on the main strip.

12:30pm: Take a taxi over to Kinkaku-ji Temple, the famed “Golden Pavilion” in Northwest Kyoto.

1:00pm: Explore Kinkaku-ji Temple. Yes, it will be crowded at this time, but it almost always is.

2:00pm: Take a taxi down to Daitoku-ji Temple and enjoy the peace and quiet of a small subtemple there. Consider Koto-in Temple

The Himeji Castle is built in the 17th century where the technology of the original castle construction is said to be at the zenith of Japan technology.

It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, the very first in Japan. Its elegant finished with white lime plasters had always been compared to the flying white egret (Hakuro). To the locals, it is sometimes also known as the Hakuro Castle. Recently the castle is reopened in 2015 after a 5 and a half years renovation, now it is the time to visit this amazing castle.

The architecture itself is one to marvel with and to be studied closely when one had the chance. Though the entrance fee is quite steep at 1000 yen in 2015. Visiting this castle extensively would easily take half a day.

Direct JR special rapid trains (shin-kaisoku) take 90 minutes and cost 2270 yen for the one way trip between Kyoto and Himeji. There are departures roughly every 15 minutes.

2 Japanese tourists allegedly raped in India

Indian police on Monday arrested three people for allegedly drugging and raping two Japanese female tourists in the northern city that is home to the Taj Mahal.

The arrests came a day after the Japanese women filed a complaint in New Delhi before flying back home.

Two of the suspects owned jewelry shops and the third acted as a tour guide in Agra, according to R. K. Sharma, a police officer investigating the case.

The two women came last week to see the Taj Mahal, India's famed white-marble monument to love in Agra, 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of India's capital. Some 3 million tourists visit the site every year.

The suspects met the Japanese women at a restaurant in Agra and offered them cheap hotel accommodations, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported.

The women, in their early 20s, said they were slipped a drug, taken to an unknown location, and repeatedly raped over a two-day period.

The victims were later freed by their captors and they left India on Sunday, Bhagat said. The tourists provided police with photographs of the accused.

Rape and illegal detention are punishable with life imprisonment in India, Bhagat said.
