Jason manford, london palladium review - lockdown laughs and feelgood fun, worth the wait for this covid-affected tour.

jason manford tour age rating

Tickets for Jason Manford's Like Me  went on sale in 2019 but the tour had to be put on hold as events unavoidably detained him at home. "I hope you haven't gone off me in that time – it does happen," he said. He needn't have worried as the Palladium crowd were as delighted as he was to be in a theatre, having a laugh.

That modesty – part real, part knowing – runs through the evening, as Manford frequently makes himself the butt of the joke, whether it's who makes the decisions at home, or telling a deliciously self-lacerating story about a cringe-making encounter with one of his comedy heroes, Peter Kay. It's beautifully paced and has several payoffs.

The Mancunian's early years in comedy – now 40, he started as a 17-year-old – get a run-through (cue the Peter Kay tale), as do stories about doing his first drive-in and Zoom gigs during 2020, and a rather weaker anecdote about hosting a virtual edition of the Royal Variety Performance.

But Manford, a skilled observational comic, properly gets into his stride when he turns to the pandemic, and he makes some sly political points while describing the UK response to Covid.

He muses on the joys of home schooling (“The only things I remember from primary school are dinner ladies and assemblies”), why not wearing a mask makes you a tool, the one-upmanship of which vaccine you had, and how he kept himself occupied during lockdown. The voluntary work he did, he explains drily, was more to do with getting out of the house (he has six children) than being a good citizen. The ironic delivery, though, can't hide the warmth behind his gags, whether he's talking about his family, fellow comics or the people he met while acting as a delivery driver last year.

There's some audience interaction, which a few smart alecks at the Palladium tried to bring off the rails, but Manford, whose perpetually smiley countenance shows an occasional glint of steel, kept his focus and mined some comedy nuggets.

Manford has a lovely singing voice, has appeared in musical theatre and was Hedgehog on ITV's The Masked Singer, and there's a lovely musical callback that provides the show's most joyously silly section.  Like Me is not deep – as the comic says at the top of the show, the point of the evening is for everyone to have fun – but its seemingly freewheeling air belies a tightly constructed 90-odd minutes of feelgood comedy.

REVIEW: Jason Manford proves laughter really is the best medicine as he takes to the stage in Aberdeen

Jason Manford

384,600 is the number of calories the lively audience at the Music Hall collectively burned off through laughing at Jason Manford last night.

From the moment the lovable comedian casually stepped out on stage – reminiscent of an old pal in his casual jeans and white trainers combo – he had the sell-out crowd in stitches, informing everyone that they would each burn 300 calories in the process.

After having some fun with latecomers who tried and failed to sneak in – shout out to the brave woman who ran the gauntlet of the front row – Jason proved why he’s Salford’s finest salt of the earth export.

Salford’s finest

Self-deprecating humour is what Jason does best as he quickly sends the audience into fits of laughter through his hilarious insight into being a father-of-six stuck at home during lockdown.

“I got a new career during lockdown, I’m now a qualified teacher,” quipped Jason when referring to home schooling his children during the pandemic.

The laughter just got louder and more animated as Jason recalled when as a teenager, unbeknown to him, he performed some of fellow comedian Peter Kay’s material in front of the very man himself.

Mark Nelson

With the audience warmed up and raring to go, Jason decided it was a safe time to introduce his support act, the talented Dumfries and Galloway comedian Mark Nelson.

And what Jason lacks in dark humour, Mark makes up for in close to the bone brilliance.

Sharing his own take on lockdown with the family, his razor sharp wit had the audience in absolute hysterics.

Not scared of dipping his toes into slightly choppier comedic waters, Mark’s acerbic tone is refreshing, especially after so long without live comedy.

Feel-good comedy

After a quick break -to rest the aching abdominal muscles – Jason appeared back on stage to inject the second dose of his feel-good laughter medicine.

From flatulence and unusual age defying smoothies to relationship advice and Zoom calls, there’s hardly a subject that Jason doesn’t turn into comedy gold.

One of the best moments of the night was when he decided to find a person in the audience with the best “non essential” job.

jason manford tour age rating

Much to his amusement, Jason received random shouts from the audience such as “langoustine species manager”.

But after an audience vote, it was the woman who ran a car boot sale who clinched the coveted title and a bottle of wine.

Judging by the huge claps and cheers at the end of the show, it’s clear that laughter, especially the Manford kind, really is the best medicine and should always be classed as an “essential” job.

Jason will be returning to Aberdeen on November 19 for his show at the P&J Live .

Jason Manford review — affable yet accurate depictions of pandemic life

Jason Manford packs in wisdom along with his seemingly easy wit

Challenge yourself with today’s puzzles.

Puzzle thumbnail

★★★★☆ Don’t underestimate Jason Manford. He makes being a stand-up comic look easy: you just get on stage in your double denim, complain about aches and pains now that you’re 40, make sharp but accessible observations about settling down and then gas on about the pandemic for a bit. Doddle.

Except . . . in his latest show, Like Me , the Mancunian comic and actor displays the sort of sure command of an audience that only the best in the business can muster. He has a sense of generosity, of enjoying the moment, that he deploys to fine effect as he warms us up for his warm-up act. In London, it’s Markus Birdman, whose jovially sour tales of his Essex daughter and his two

Jason Manford – review

I n fairness to Jason Manford , he told us it'd be trivial. The show is called First World Problems, after the popular Twitter hashtag for things that irk privileged people. This isn't a gig that puts the world to rights, or subverts the homely, rattle-no-cages shtick that has made Manford's name. But while you may wish in vain, as I do, for Manford to surprise us or widen his range, you can't gainsay his skill. On several occasions tonight, I found my frustration at another low-horizoned joke interrupted – contradicted? – by the sound of my laughter at the way Manford was telling it.

So if the subject matter – sneezes that sound like farts; annoying conversations with call-centres – is often stodgy, it's leavened by Manford's voice, and his dumb demeanour. He's man-of-the-people in excelsis, foregrounding his own tubbiness, laziness and lack of pretension. It's self-conscious, but it doesn't feel fake, and situates him as the shambling butt of many of his best jokes. Then there's his Mancunian accent and no-nonsense turn-of-phrase, which combine to undercut affectation wherever Manford spots it – in, for example, a prissy goalkeeper bawling out his hopeless defence ("These [gloves] were clean at three o'clock, you pair of bell-ends!").

The quality isn't always high: the first half is scrappy, and there's much generic mockery of local towns, as well as duff gags like the one about his brother's reaction to Manford's hypochondria. But at its best, this is expert observational comedy, ensuring that, if the heart sinks at another everyday situation that's been joked about a hundred times before, it'll soar soon at some bright new Manford-patented detail. And it's silly, too: "I didn't have enough dip for my chips, but if I opened a new dip, I wouldn't have enough chips for my dip." When trivia's that funny, the occasional wallow is quite forgivable.

Jason Manford announces new tour | Including Manchester's new Co-Op Live Arena

Jason Manford announces new tour

Including Manchester's new Co-Op Live Arena

Jason Manford has announced a new live show for, A Manford All Seasons .

The tour, initially 17 dates, will include some of the UK’s biggest entertainment venues – including the London Palladium, Leeds First Direct Arena and Glasgow Armandillo, and will culminating at Manchester’s new £365 million Co-Op Live. He is the  first comic to  be announced for the 23,500-capacity venue, set to open in April.

It follows Manford’s last stand-up show, Like Me, which he performed 280 times across the country.

The comic said: ‘People ask me what my favourite job is, acting, presenting, musicals etc. I love them all, but my favourite is still the privilege of doing stand-up comedy.

‘It’s just me, you, a microphone and a cracking venue. No cameras, no director, no viewing figures and no Ofcom!

‘I can’t wait to see you again and have a good laugh at this mad world, it feels like it's been ages.’

As well as his stand-up, Salford-born Manford has hosted many shows for the BBC and ITV including Unbeatable, Sunday Night at The Palladium, and The Royal Variety Performance.  Earlier this year, he returned to judge the second series of ITV1's Saturday night show Starstruck.

He also has a three-hour show every Sunday on Absolute Radio and has starred in touring and West End musicals including Sweeney Todd, The Producers, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This summer, he starred as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz at The London Palladium.

Tickets for his new tour go on sale at 10am on Friday.

Back in October, comedian Jason Manford announced he was returning to the stand-up circuit with his brand new show, A Manford All Seasons, in 2024 and 2025.

It was revealed last autumn that the UK tour would stop at some of this country’s biggest entertainment venues, such as The London Palladium, Blackpool Opera House and First Direct Arena in Leeds, as well as Manchester’s brand-new 23,500 capacity Co-op Live (Manford is actually the first comic to be announced for this new northern venue).

If your hometown venue wasn't on the original line-up of shows, don't fear, Manford has added a whopping 52 extra dates to his A Manford All Seasons tour!

In 2005, the Salford born comedian was nominated for the coveted Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and in 2006, he joined team captain Dave Spikey on Channel 4’s comedy series, 8 Out Of 10 Cats. Manford was then invited to join as a team captain in 2007.

Since then, Manford has appeared on the stage and television alike. He’s toured the UK with his stand-up shows Turning Into My Dad, First World Problems, Muddle Class, and Like Me. He’s also taken part in Channel 4’s Comedy Gala, presented BBC One's First & Last, and ITV's What Would Your Kid Do?, and even performed on ITV’s The Masked Singer as a hedgehog.
