Taylorsville native J.D. Shelburne brings the show to Kentucky during free hometown concert

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. — J.D. Shelburne released his new album "Straight from Kentucky" in his hometown of Taylorsville, where fans gathered Friday to welcome the hometown country start for a free concert.

J.d. shelburne hit the stage with a full concert for the first time since the start of the pandemic he performed hits from his latest album “straight from kentucky" the concert was held in his hometown of taylorsville the concert was free to attend .

“I started my career in this town. I remember in 2004-or-5, I played on a gooseneck trailer with about 100 people,” Shelburne said. 

J.D.’s latest album recently landed a spot on the iTunes top ten country chart. 

To say thank you to his hometown for its continual support, he shared his new music with a free concert Saturday. 

“This town made me who I was and who I am and so I have a lot of pride right now,” Shelburne said. 

The pandemic forced his original concert date last year to be postponed. J.D. said Kentucky's COVID-19 mandates dropped just in time. 

“When the restrictions got lifted in Kentucky on June 11, I was in Nashville. It came to my twitter account. I was like thank you to the man upstairs,” he said. 

Spencer County has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state with only about 20% of people fully vaccinated, but fans say they felt safe despite hundreds in the crowd.

“I think now is a better time to have a concert. We’re really getting out of here from this COVID situation and I think really people want to come outside and have fun,” saidMatthew Veteto. “I would like to thank doctors and nurses, and really everyone out there in the medical field. They’ve put their lives on the line and they’ve spent hours, weeks, months just trying to make everything better.”

Other fans shared that sentinment, including Mahala Prunity and Rochelle Zepp. 

“I've been vaccinated. It makes me feel a whole lot more comfortable being around people and not being scared anymore,” Prunity said. 

“I’m glad we’re all getting vaccinated, everything is opening back up, our economy is seeing what it needs to after a long hard year,” Zepp said. 

For J.D., the concert was a way to give back to a place that is so special to him. 

“Folks maybe can’t afford to go to a show or don’t have reliable transportation to drive into Louisville or down to Nashville. We just wanted to come back home where they can just walk up the street, bring the family,” Shelburne said.

JD Shelburne Hits His Stride on New Album 'Straight from Kentucky' : 'I Feel Like It's My Time'

"I truly believe persistence wins … and I feel like this album will get me over the hump," the country singer-songwriter tells PEOPLE

Life has long been a waiting game for JD Shelburne .

At 38 years old, the proud Kentucky native with the country music pedigree has long played small gigs for measly audiences and miniscule tips. But last year, when he finally reached a place in his career where he had established the fanbase and the momentum to release his debut album, and when he finally received the news that his wife was expecting the baby they had long prayed for after dealing with infertility, the pandemic took hold. Tour dates were canceled, and album prep was scratched and Shelburne — along with the rest of the world — found himself without any sort of game plan.

But then, he started looking at his life in a whole new way.

"I started thinking that maybe this was God telling me to take a break," Shelburne tells PEOPLE in a new interview. "Maybe God was giving me the time to be with my wife during her pregnancy and hang out with my family and truly enjoy our new son. I really just had to step back and let Him take the reins."

And so, he did. After playing shows 200 times a year for four hours a night, Shelburne rested his voice and rested his ears and let his brain breathe for a little while. He and his wife Amy Jo also bought a house and welcomed their son Jax to the world in September. And in true Shelburne fashion, he found a way to turn the negative into the positive via a series of Facebook Lives and livestreams where he could play his music and introduce his fanbase to his growing family. And now, the wait to release his first full-length debut album Straight from Kentucky is over.

"I feel like it's my time," explains Shelburne, mere days before his hometown concert in Taylorsville, Kentucky this Saturday. "I've been in Nashville since 2008 and I really built my own ship from the beginning. I've been doing everything all by myself for over a decade. I think what I wanted was to make an album that could get me to the next level. And I really believe this one will."

The pandemic allowed Shelburne to take what was originally going to be an EP of seven songs and expand it into an album with 11 songs that give an all-encompassing look into the heart and soul of the kid that grew up on a tobacco farm loving country music. The unexpected time off also gave Shelburne the time to discover the endearing song "Hometown in My Headlights," exclusively premiering on PEOPLE.

"I just loved it from the moment I heard it," Shelburne says of the irresistible song. "It felt like summer. I started listening to it on my walks around the neighborhood. And the more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with it."

The music video for "Hometown in My Headlights" also ended up being filmed just 20 miles from his Tennessee home, in front of an out of nowhere diner that was once used in an old Kid Rock music video and a slick-looking car that looks awfully like the one Shelburne was given by his parents back in high school.

"We were actually setting up the scenes for the 'Hometown in My Headlights' video and some random guy drove by the diner and said we looked like we needed a cool car in the shoot," Shelburne remembers. "We were like, what do you got? And he's like, I got this Mustang and I was like, OK."

It was just another crazy moment in the life of Shelburne and his quest to become the country music star he has always deserved to be.

"I've gotten so far," he says. "I'm at this point where, it's like, if I give up now, I will always regret it. I just feel like I've got the greatest fan base and at the end of the day, my fan base has really kept pushing me along all the way to now. They are what has kept me going all these years. It's just every year, I've got a little bit farther."

He grows quiet.

"There's been so many times where I didn't get a gig, or I didn't get an interview, or I had the door slammed in my face. But I truly believe persistence wins … and I feel like this album will get me over the hump."

Kentucky Native JD Shelburne will host his 2023 NEW ALBUM Release Concert in his hometown of Taylorsville, KY on Saturday July 29, 2023! This will be his 6th hometown celebration concert that Shelburne will host in Downtown Taylorsville, KY to celebrate the release of his new album "Neon Hallelujah"! His new full-length album, co produced by Shelburne and Mike Proctor, will feature 14 tracks including the recent title track "Neon Hallelujah" that was premiered on The Boot in March. This album will also featuring a collaboration with the Legendary Oak Ridge Boys! Shelburne who has been featured on CMT, GAC, Newsmax, NBC and more will perform with his full Nashville band starting at 8:30pm on Main Street! Openers will begin at 7pm and those will be announced in the coming months. JD Shelburne was recently honored at the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame among many other accomplishments he has received throughout his career. His last record-setting album celebration concert was featured on NBC Meet the Press!!!

Country music singer/songwriter JD Shelburne shows off his playful side with the release of the music video for "Fine By Me," off his current album Straight From Kentucky. Shelburne is pictured strapped with an acoustic guitar, carrying out the song's affectionate lyrics of being proud to be seen next to his beautiful counterpart.

The "Fine By Me" music video was premiered by Sounds Like Nashville and is available to download and stream on all digital platforms now!

"When I first heard 'Fine By Me' I knew it was written for my voice," shares Shelburne. "I am living this song and it is one so many can relate to. The melody and lyrics are right in my wheelhouse, and I was honestly shocked it had not been recorded. 'Fine By Me' was one of the first songs I tested online during the pandemic and fans went crazy over it, plus my wife absolutely loved it. I knew it was a special song from the moment we recorded it in the studio. I am excited for the fans to see the new video!"

“The Road I Grew Up On was a song title I took to a writing appointment.  It was the first time in the room with hitmaker Tony Martin.  Mark Nesler brought all three of us together at his house one day and it’s been one of my most favorite songs I have written.  This song takes you back home and that was the whole idea behind writing the lyrics – we wanted the listener to realize that no matter how far you stray from home, you never forget how to get back.  The song has been a fan favorite ever since my record release.  We listened to the fans on this one and wanted to bring the song to life. My favorite part of the video is when I am looking back at some old photos from my childhood.  Those are actual photos my mom dug up from back home.  It brings so much emotion to the video.  You’ll see photos of my parents, grandparents, my childhood home, my grandmother’s home, and more.  Those photos really set the tone for taking you back home like this song does for me every time I sing it.  It’s one of my favorite videos to date – Stormlight knocked it out of the park.”

His debut single and video for “One Less Girl” world premiered on CMT in 2018, and then went on to become a Top 30 Music Row charted song on country radio. CMT again world premiered his second song and video for “She Keeps Me Up Nights” in April of 2019, which peaked at #3 of their 12 Pack countdown series.
