I was so excited to see Jill Scott after being a fan for years. I even traveled over 300 miles to see her in Chicago this summer and was highly disappointed. This was my first concert and maybe this is the way artist are, but when folks pay hundreds of dollars just for tickets, not including travel accommodations, I want to hear her sing an entire song and not point the microphone at the crowd, for her as the headliner not to take 45 minutes to come to the stage and finally for her to have the decency to thank the crowd for coming out in a more meaningful way than thank you and good night. The other acts that I was interested in but not really there to see had way more gravitas and appreciation not only for their craft but for the folks who made it possible for them to be there. I personally will not spend another dime on Jill Scott. Sadly, disappointed, I just can't do it.

Jill Scott sounded AHMAZING! Overall the show was amazing and the energy was awesome despite the show starting late. Opening act poet hit the stage late and had to much time.

Jill Scott hit the stage at 9:10pm and was off the stage by 10:20pm. We thought it was just wardrobe change time. Then the lights came up. We thought okay intermission. Then they rolled her backdrop up and started breaking down the stage.

We didn’t get the journey through her catalog we just got the start of the Jilly from Philly journey. She sounds amazing however for the price paid for her tickets I was hoping to see her on stage a lot longer. It was not worth the money spent on her ticket to see her for one hour ten minutes. With her catalog was expecting at least two hours of her on stage.

The opening act was great, but I could not keep my eye off the keyboardist. I kept thinking of Wendy in Prince & The Revolution. I thought she was amazing and want to know more about her as a musician. Why am I not giving the name of her band? Because I have no clue. No one did... Search on-line and there is no information I could find in 30 seconds. (If I can't find it in 30 sec or less, the information isn't worth it.)

After the opening act, or was it before??? There was a poet who did an amazing job with spoken work. Talk about foreplay, I was all hot and ready to go before Miss Jill Scott came to the stage. Her poetry was very uplifting, powerful, affirming, female-centered and strong. (She didn't leave us men out, but we know what's up and when to step back and listen. And we did!!!)

Then Miss Scott came one. Go see her. There is my review.

Jill Biden wraps up U.P. tour with visit to Soo Locks and health care discussion

First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff learn about the New Lock construction project on Friday, May 17, 2024 during a tour of the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.

SAULT STE. MARIE — First Lady Jill Biden wrapped up her visit to the Upper Peninsula on Friday with a tour of the Soo Locks and a discussion with local tribal leaders about health care needs.

Biden, along with Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, arrived in town on Thursday after a visit in Marquette. They spoke with members of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Bay Mills Indian Community before touring the Soo Locks and visiting the construction site for the New Lock at the Soo project.

While visiting the locks, city, county and tribal officials accompanied the group while Biden and Emhoff received information about the Soo Locks from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and those involved in the construction of the new lock.

"The Great Lakes have been a major part of our transportation network as we move materials from the Lake Superior basin to our manufacturing centers in the Midwest," said Lt. Col. Brett Boyle, Commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District. "That process before there was a lock here would take up to six weeks for a commercial ship. It now takes about an hour with the current lock facility."

Biden and Emhoff witnessed the bulk carrier Mesabi Miner make its way through the Poe Lock, with Biden waving to crew members on board.

The Poe Lock is currently the only lock large enough for many shipping freighters transporting iron ore across the Great Lakes. Around 95 percent of all the iron ore mined in the country passes through the Soo Locks, making the locks a vital component of the national economy.

"The Soo Locks may be the most critical piece of infrastructure in North America," said Jim Weakley, president of the Lake Carriers’ Association. "The most critical cargo is iron ore because of its value and its national defense implications. There is no alternative mode of transportation for this dense cargo."

The locks see around 7,000 vessels and 75 million tons of cargo pass through each year. It's estimated that Great Lakes shipping supports 147,000 U.S. jobs, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

"An unexpected six-month closure of this lock would result in the loss of 11 million American jobs and 3-5 million Canadian and Mexican jobs," Weakly added.

The First Lady is the first member of a presidential administration to visit the Soo Locks in many years. In 2022, the Biden Administration invested $3.2 billion into the construction of the new lock through the Water Resources Development Act.

The new lock, when completed, will allow for more traffic to pass through the Soo Locks and decrease strain on the two locks currently in operation.

Prior to visiting the Soo Locks, Biden and Emhoff also met with local tribal leaders to discuss the importance of health care. Together, they celebrated achievements in tribal health care, such as the Sault Tribe's recent announcement of a health care revitalization program.

"We announced just this week that we will be implementing a two-year health care revitalization plan to increase access to care and improve the quality of health care services that we offer to the community," said Austin Lowes, chairman of the Sault Tribe. "This visit with our partners in the Biden Administration is very timely. Thank you for your continued collaboration and partnership, along with your willingness to listen and have an open dialogue today."

Other speakers, such as Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle, talked about how much tribal health care programs have improved over the years, despite struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sault Tribe Vice Chairman Tyler LaPlaunt also talked about the great strides that have been made in tribal health care, but noted that there is still progress to be made.

"I appreciate everything that this administration has done, because it has done far more than any other administration for us, there's still a long way to go," said LaPlaunt.

Biden addressed the need for addiction and mental health resources while visiting with tribal officials.

"As a teacher who has been in the classroom for 40 years, and since the pandemic, I see mental health is a much greater problem," said Biden. "I see students on Zoom calls who are missing out on a lot of classroom services, and are having a tough time coming back and being social again."

Biden also noted the importance of funding research in many areas, including women's health.

"All the research on women's health has been underfunded for decades, but that's going to change now. Because when I took this problem to Joe, he listened, and he said we have to fix this problem," she said.

Biden and Emhoff's visit was part of a U.P. tour that saw them make stops in Marquette, Brimley and the Soo before heading downstate to continue visiting Michigan communities.

Three-time Grammy® Award-winning singer-songwriter, Actress and Multimedia Entrepreneur Jill Scott re-embarks on the “Who is Jill Scott? Words & Vol. 1 Tour” in 2023, in celebration of the now 23rd anniversary of her iconic debut album. The tour includes a performance at the Fox Theatre on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 8 p.m. Comerica Bank is the exclusive presenting partner of the Fox Theatre.

What started as the 20th-anniversary tour of Jill Scott’s chart-topping, genre-defining album, Who Is Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol I in 2020 ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But good news prevails: in 2023, the tour will resume, electrifying auditoriums, theaters, and music halls throughout the nation in celebration of a moment and movement that continues to enthrall music lovers of all ages and backgrounds. Scott will play the iconic album front to back, with hits from her iconic debut album, such as “Gettin’ in the Way,” “A Long Walk” and other musical stories. The tour, produced by Live Nation Urban, will play in over 20 markets across the country, with special multi-show residencies in Washington, D.C. at the MGM National Harbor on Mother's Day weekend and Scott’s hometown of Philadelphia at The MET Philadelphia, marking the first time the North Philadelphia native will play at the storied North Philadelphia venue. The Philadelphia stop also includes a fundraiser at the Arden Theatre in support of her non-profit, the Blues Babe Foundation.

"My band and I were so excited three years ago, but that damn COVID shut us down," said Scott. "Now, we outside! Come see me. Come feel again. Relive your favorite moments. Ya'll ready to settle down and get with this?!? It's a lot of love here."

Though Scott had to pause performances during the pandemic, she celebrated the milestone virtually and continued building her brand as a multimedia entrepreneur, launching “Jill Scott Presents: J.ill the Podcast” in November 2020 alongside co-hosts Laiya St.Clair and Aja Graydon-Dantzler. The universally-loved podcast currently has 80 episodes and continues to grow in popularity and influence. Scott also participated in the first woman vs. woman Verzuz battle in May 2020, starred in Lifetime’s Highway to Heaven and BET+’s The First Wives Club, and in September 2021, she became the face of Nationwide, bringing a fresh take on a familiar campaign and putting her soulful spin on the iconic jingle.

Scott released her much-anticipated debut record, Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1 in July 2000, which became a double platinum album that earned Scott several Grammy® nominations, including Best New Artist (2001), Best R&B Album (2001), and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for three years in a row (2001-2003). The album also cracked Billboard top 10 for R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (2001).

Jill Biden to visit Marquette, Midland, Detroit as part of husband’s re-election bid

Jill Biden visits Grand Rapids

First lady Jill Biden gives brief remarks during the annual First Ladies Luncheon at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday, April 26, 2024. Biden briefly addressed the crowd, before turning the mic to Dr. Carolyn Mazure, Chair of the White House Women’s Health Research Initiative, since Biden lost her voice. Joel Bissell | MLive.com

DETROIT, MI — On the same weekend her husband plans to visit the state, Jill Biden will stop at three Michigan cities as part of her push to re-elect President Joe Biden, campaign officials said.

The First Lady will meet with female leaders and women in Marquette on Thursday, May 16; in Midland on Friday, May 17; and in Detroit on Saturday, May 18. Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, will accompany The First Lady, Biden campaign officials said.

Their visits this week are part of the Women for Biden-Harris tour, a wing of the president’s campaign that launched in March, focusing on rallying female voters for the president’s re-election bid in November.

Campaign officials did not immediately have details about the times and addresses for the stops in Marquette, Midland and Detroit.

Campaign organizers said The First Lady and Second Gentleman planned to meet with a selected group of women in each community to “highlight the stakes for women in this election.”

Among the issues campaign officials said Jill Biden plans to discuss: Securing abortion access in the aftermath of Roe vs. Wade, overturned in part by Supreme Court justices appointed during the Donald Trump presidency; the Biden administration’s efforts to “protect and strengthen” Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; and the president’s support of the Affordable Care Act, which the Trump administration attempted to overturn during his 4-year term in the White House.

Jill Biden’s Detroit visit is scheduled one day before President Biden is due there to serve as keynote speaker during the NAACP’s 69th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner . His wife was not expected to attend the Sunday, May 19, gathering in Detroit, campaign officials said.

The Biden family’s week in Michigan comes less than a month after Jill Biden attended the First Lady Luncheon in Grand Rapids . President Biden hosted a series of campaign events in Saginaw County in mid-March .

Biden’s Republican competition for the White House, Donald Trump, also visited Michigan recently. About 6,500 people attended his rally earlier this month at an airport hangar in Saginaw County’s Tittabawassee Township.

Political science experts said they expect both candidates and their surrogates to campaign regularly in Michigan , a “swing state” considered vital to securing the presidency in November.

The last time Michigan voters favored a candidate who did not win the national vote was 20 years ago, when Democrat John Kerry earned the state’s vote but fell short nationally to Republican George W. Bush.

Jill Biden to stump in Michigan this week ahead of President Biden's return

jill scott tour detroit

First lady Jill Biden is slated to stump across Michigan this week in a push for her husband's reelection, days ahead of President Joe Biden's third campaign trek to the state this year on Sunday.

Her arrival will kickoff a Women for Biden-Harris event in Marquette on Thursday, before heading to Midland and Detroit in the latest effort to "protect affordable health care from Donald Trump," the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in the 2024 election year, the Biden-Harris campaign said Tuesday. The first lady will be joined by second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris.

At 2 p.m. Thursday, the first lady and Emhoff will arrive at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport in Gwinn in the Upper Peninsula. They will deliver remarks at a political event in Marquette at 3 p.m., according to the White House.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, they are scheduled to arrive at Chippewa County International Airport in Kincheloe and deliver remarks at a community event with the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

At noon Friday, Jill Biden and the second gentleman will join a community listening session about health care with members of the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the White House said. At 1 p.m., they are slated to highlight historic investments through President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda and will tour the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, then head to Midland for a political event at 5:15 p.m.

The White House said the first lady and second gentleman will touch down at Detroit Metro Airport at 7 p.m. Friday and will deliver remarks at a political event at 11:30 a.m. Saturday before heading to New York to wrap up the tour.

Event locations were not released.

The first lady's visit to the state will mark her second time in the Great Lakes State in less than a month , following a stop in Grand Rapids for the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation’s annual First Ladies Luncheon on April 26.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, alongside community leaders, launched Michigan’s Women for Biden-Harris group in Detroit on March 1, the Biden-Harris campaign said. Harris visited Detroit on May 6 to promote the Biden administration's assisting of small businesses, and Grand Rapids in February as a part of a "nationwide reproductive freedoms tour, highlighting extreme abortion bans and underscoring the danger in seemingly 'safe' states like Michigan," the campaign said.

The Women for Biden-Harris tour in Michigan will come days before the president returns to the state on Sunday to deliver the keynote address for the NAACP Detroit Branch's 69th annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner at Huntington Place in Detroit.

It will be Democratic president's third campaign trip to Michigan this year and his first since March 14 when he made stops in Saginaw, a Democratic stronghold  within a bellwether Michigan county , greeting volunteers at a private home in the city's Cathedral District neighborhood before dining with a family at a golf course in Saginaw Township.

The president was also in Michigan on Feb. 1 when he addressed a crowd of about 200 people at a United Auto Workers hall in Warren and courted Black voters at a sports bar in Harper Woods.

The Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner this year will mark 69 years that the massive social gathering — among the region's largest sit-down dinners, hosting nearly 10,000 guests — has ushered in voices of some of the most renowned civil rights, faith and elected officials from Michigan and across the nation.

Biden spoke at the dinner in 2015 , praising Detroit's comeback following its 2013-2014 municipal bankruptcy, saying it was on the road to economic recovery.

Biden's speech to the NAACP in Detroit is part of his campaign's efforts to engage Black voters in swing state Michigan, where turning out Black voters in Detroit and the first-ring suburbs is expected to be key to his running up the score against Trump.

Trump last month made a stop in his third state campaign visit to Freeland, about 14 miles northwest of Saginaw, where he thanked U.S. Supreme Court justices for overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that allowed for a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy. He has said he'll leave policy decisions on abortion access to the states.

The battleground state of Michigan enshrined abortion rights in its constitution in 2022. It is expected to be key focus for Trump and Biden, who won the state in 2020 by nearly 3 percentage points, 51%-48%, or 154,000 votes. Trump won Michigan in 2016 by two-tenths of a point or 10,703 votes.

Scottie Scheffler arrested for allegedly assaulting officer near fatal crash while on way to PGA Championship

Updated on: May 17, 2024 / 8:45 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler  was arrested by police in Louisville on Friday morning on his way to the PGA Championship, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was led to a police car and charged with assaulting an officer after allegedly attempting to drive around traffic backed up from a pedestrian fatality investigation. Scheffler was released later in the morning and continued competing in the tournament.

Police said Scheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. In a statement to CBS News, Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines said the golfer "never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle" and added that "we will litigate this matter as needed."

In a statement posted to Instagram , Scheffler said he was in a "very chaotic situation."

"There was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," Scheffler said. "I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic. Police said the man died at the scene, CBS affiliate WLKY  reported . Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla Golf Club, with dozens of police cars flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, later started the second round shortly after 10 a.m. EDT. After finishing Friday's round, Scheffler told reporters he wouldn't discuss specific details about the incident, but he said he didn't know at the time that the accident ahead of him in traffic was fatal.

"I feel like my head's still spinning," Scheffler said. "I can't really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell — that was a first for me."

Scheffler expressed confidence that the charges would "get resolved, I think, fairly quickly."

Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

According to a police report, Scheffler was in an eastbound lane and pulled into the westbound lanes, where a uniformed detective was standing. The detective stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward," according to the report.

The detective, identified as Det. Gillis, was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist," according to the report.

The detective was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Louisville Metro Police Department said that all lanes were closed during the traffic fatality investigation.

"While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested," the police said in a statement. "We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating."

Romines said Scheffler was driving a marked player's vehicle and proceeding as he'd been instructed.

"I think the officer that was directing traffic was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that's where the miscommunication arose, and that's why we're here," Romines told WLKY.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said he watched this unfold with Scheffler driving past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV. He said police pulled Scheffler out of the vehicle, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

In this still image made from video provided by ESPN, Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is escorted to a police car after being handcuffed near Valhalla Golf Club, the site of the PGA Championship golf tournament, early May 17, 2024.

"Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, 'Please help me,'" Darlington said. "He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively."

Darlington said whole the incident started with a "misunderstanding with traffic flow."

With cars backed up in the morning darkness, other PGA-marked vehicles tried to move slowly toward the entrance. Traffic finally began to move slowly a little before 7 a.m.

A spokesperson for the PGA of America identified the man who was struck by the shuttle bus as John Mills. In a statement, the PGA's Greg Dillard said Mills, a worker with one of the group's vendors, was going to work when he was hit.

"This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship," the PGA said in a statement. "We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear conveyed his condolences on social media , saying, "Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family."

"The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution," Beshear said.

Scheffler also expressed his sympathies for the man who died.

"It truly puts everything in perspective," Scheffler said on social media.

The website for the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections briefly showed a booking photo of Scheffler before the photo was removed. According to the website, Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m.

Did Scottie Scheffler play today?

Scheffler returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted "free Scottie!"

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range. Then he went out and made a birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to three feet. Scheffler finished Friday's round two strokes behind leader Collin Morikawa at nine strokes under par for the tournament, CBS Sports reports .

It was a surreal start to what already has been a wild week of weather — the Masters champion and top-ranked in the world, dressed in workout clothes with his hands in cuffs behind his back amid flashing flights.

Darlington said police were not sure who he was. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, "There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail."

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scottie Scheffler of the United States plays his shot from the 12th tee during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments. He was home in Dallas for the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son who was born on May 8.

"I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning," Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 Friday that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship. He is seeking to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Last month, Scheffler won his second  Masters Tournament  victory in three years, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.
