Sightseeing:

Kahului, Maui's deep-water port, is home to nearly a third of the island's resident population and busy with shipping traffic. While commerce keeps the city bustling, it also means that Kahului's waterfront is more ships and sailing-vessels then sand. Beaches east of the city center are certainly nothing to sniff at though, whether you're after a swim or a few hours of sun.

Less than a landing strip away from Maui's main airport in Kahului, the Kanaha Beach Park is rated one of the best places to learn how to sailboard in the world and consequently most visitors happily let the sound of the surf drown out the noise of the flights landing behind the trees. The same winds that made the area popular with sail boarders have lured in kite-boarders, though sea-kayakers and tentative surfers also find the regular breeze and gentle swell a good way to get up to speed before venturing on to the house-high breaks Hawaii is famous for.

If you think water sports are better left to the birds, stop in at the Kanaha Pond State Sanctuary , also close to the airport, for views of commercial airlines, migratory waterfowl and the endangered Hawaiian stilt and coot.

Kahului's city center boasts such home-town amenities as shopping malls and the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

It's best to rent a car to see the island's most visited attractions. Public transportation is not a good alternative. All major firms are located here. Make reservations in advance, as they use shuttles to get you to your car.

Nearby Places:

For more of the historic and less of the air-conditioned mall, head out of town along Route 320 to Wailuku, Maui's county-seat with several historic buildings and a museum that exhibits relics from the missionaries-in-Hawaii era.

Continue up Route 320, the 'Road to 'Iao', for ' Iao Valley State Park . A rock pillar, 'The Needle' rises up out of the foliage to a height of 2,250 feet above sea level. It was once a look-out and also an altar. Exploring the views and verdant greenery in the park on a number of short hikes requires, however, no big sacrifice.

Watch for sugarcane fields on the drive out of Kahului. The city is 20 miles-a 45 minute drive-east of Lahaina around Puu Kukui , at 5,788 feet the highest peak in the West Maui Mountains.

Kahului is 38 miles north of Haleakala National Park and 23 east of Lahaina.

Shopping and Food

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

Tendering in Maui from a cruise ship anchored in Lahaina Harbor in Maui

📍 Lahaina, Maui Cruise Port – currently closed

Situated on the west coast of Maui, Lahaina Harbor does not have a port for larger ships to dock. Instead, these vessels anchor just offshore and passengers hop onto smaller boats called tenders that take them directly into downtown Lahaina.

The following cruise lines use Lahaina Harbor: Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, and Fred Olsen.

How far is the Maui Port from the beach?

The nearest beach to Maui’s port in Kahului is Kanaha Beach Park, located only 4.3 miles away. It’s a great spot for swimming, windsurfing, and picnicking with its crystal blue waters and white sandy shores. Visitors can even find a surf school at the beach if they want to take some lessons.

The nearest beach to Maui’s port in Lahaina is Kaanapali Beach, located only 5 miles away. With its pristine, crystal-clear waters and sugary white sand, this spot is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There are also plenty of shops nearby if you want to do some shopping or grab a bite to eat when visiting Maui from a cruise ship.

What is Maui known for?

Maui is most known for its stunning beaches, incredible marine life, lush rainforests, and idyllic mountain vistas. Maui’s coastline is dotted with crescent-shaped beaches and hidden coves that offer an array of activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking.

The island also features amazing sightseeing opportunities from the top of Maui’s iconic Haleakala volcano to the historic towns and villages that line Maui’s coast.

Is Maui worth visiting?

Absolutely! Maui is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore Hawaii’s natural beauty and diverse culture. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous outdoor adventure, a relaxing beach day, or a cultural experience, Maui from a cruise ship has something for everyone.

Can I walk to the city center from the cruise terminal?

Once you arrive on the shore from the tender, welcome to downtown Lahaina! It’s a wonderful area that is perfect for walking around and exploring.

After disembarking at Kahului dock, you’ll likely find yourself needing transportation to reach the city center one mile away.

Transportation in Maui

Traveling around Maui is a breeze thanks to the abundance of transportation options available. Whether you need to get from the port to your hotel or explore the rest of Maui, consider getting a rental car for maximum flexibility and convenience.

Maui also has an Uber service that can take you just about anywhere on the island, and public buses that run throughout Maui offer a great budget-friendly option. Whichever route you choose, getting around Maui is easy and hassle-free!

Maui from a Cruise Ship Frequently Ask Questions (FAQs)

Some of Maui’s top attractions include Haleakala National Park, Iao Valley State Park, Maui Ocean Center, Maui Tropical Plantation, Wai’anapanapa State Park, Lahaina Pali Trail, and many more.

Maui is home to many stunning beaches, but few compare to Maui’s Papawai Beach in Lahaina. It boasts a wide stretch of white sand and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and more! The sparkling shoreline is surrounded by lush greenery and offers an unforgettable view of Maui.

Cruise Ship Specific Questions

Yes, cruise ships tender at the Lahaina Harbor while cruise ships that can dock at the Maui Port in Kahului will be able to disembark directly from the vessel.

You can check the Hawaii cruise ship port calendar to see which cruise ships are in which port on which day.

Maui has two major ports, the Maui Port in Kahului and the Lahaina Harbor, both of which offer convenient access to explore Maui’s many attractions.

Experience the perfect getaway to Maui in the picturesque months of April, May, August, September, and early October, which tend to be the best time to visit. During these periods, you will find ideal weather conditions for your holiday escape along with a more relaxed atmosphere due to lower demand for accommodations and fewer crowds on the island – commonly referred to as ‘off-season periods’ or ‘shoulder months’.

Pog Punch and Mai Tai

The Mai Tai is the most beloved drink of all Islands, and its simplicity to make makes it even more attractive. To create a delicious Mai Tai, combine 1/2 ounce of orange Curacao with 2 ounces of freshly squeezed orange juice for an authentically tropical experience.

For a memorable Maui vacation, it is recommended to spend at least five days on the island. This will give you plenty of time to explore Maui’s many attractions, enjoy its stunning beaches, and indulge in local cuisine – a must for any Maui visit! As for me and my husband, we usually go for 4-7 days and would love to go and spend 2-4 weeks in Maui one day!

Cruises from/to Kahului, Maui, Hawaii

Kahului, maui, hawaii cruise port.

  • For fun in the sun, find Kanaha Beach Park. Located behind a patch of shady ironwood trees, this mile-long expanse is a great place to swim and watch multitudes of kitesurfers and windsurfers, where offshore breezes create perfect conditions for these particular water sports.
  • Birdwatchers will want to visit the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, with no fewer than three endangered Hawaiian bird species: the native coot, black-crowned night herons, and ae?o. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the park is relatively easy to find, thanks to its location near a main road.
  • For budding and established botanists, a visit to the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is a must. Created on the grounds of the former Maui Zoological and Botanical Gardens, you can learn about native plants and also see a good selection of Polynesian-introduced plants. You can go it alone, use the audio tour, or get a personal guided tour.
  • For a taste of regional art, the Schaefer International Gallery has different exhibitions throughout the year which include contemporary local artists and native Hawaiian arts. One of the largest museum exhibition spaces in the state, the venue has 4,000 square feet where artists can display their work.

Hawaii Cruise Ports: Details You Need to Know

A Hawaii cruise is a great way to explore the breathtaking islands of Hawaii. It allows you to easily hop from one island to another as you visit the beautiful beaches of Maui , the lush rainforests of Kauai , and the volcanic landscape of the Big Island .

But before you plan your cruise and island excursions, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports. Not only will you have a better idea of where you’ll be docking, but it also makes it easier to plan tours and excursions during your stopover. Be sure to check out our Hawaii Cruise Travel Guide to get the most out of your cruise.

Here are the six Hawaii cruise ports that cruise ships can dock or tender at:

  • Honolulu Pier 2 Cruise Terminal on Oahu (minutes from Waikiki Beach)
  • Port of Hilo on the Big Island (Hilo, East Hawaii)
  • Kailua Pier (tender port) in downtown Kailua-Kona, Big Island
  • Kahului Harbor in north-central Maui
  • Lahaina Harbor (tender port) in West Maui (currently not operational)
  • Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai’s East Side, near Lihue Town.

Looking for more Hawaii cruise planning resources? We have hand-picked the best shore excursions on each island: Big Island Shore Excursions – Honolulu Shore Excursions – Kauai Shore Excursions – Maui Shore Excursions We’ve ironed out the rest of your Hawaii cruise planning details in our Cruising Hawaii Guide – it’s convenient, organized, and comprehensive so you can be Hawaii cruise-ready right away!

Your Hawaii Cruise Ports Depends on Your Itinerary

Where you go on your Hawaiian cruise largely depends on the cruise line and itinerary. Most cruises will visit Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, although others may only make stops at two or three islands.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line operates a year-round Hawaiian cruise that leaves from and returns to Honolulu, Oahu. After leaving Honolulu, the Pride of America visits four different ports – Kahului (Maui), Hilo (Hawaii Island), Kona (Hawaii Island), and Nawiliwili (Kauai).

It’s the only cruise that stays in Hawaii, so it’s the best option if you want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Plus, it has overnight stays on the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui so you can stay in a hotel or take part in early morning or late evening excursions. Plus, no sea days means more time to explore the islands!

Hawaii Departure Ports

Before you decide on a Hawaiian cruise, it’s important to take note of the departure and arrival ports, as they are different from ship to ship. Generally speaking, most Pacific Ocean-crossing itineraries will leave from the west coast. The most common departure and arrival ports include:

  • San Francisco, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Diego, California
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Vancouver, BC

Of course, these aren’t the only departure ports for cruise ships, as many long-term itineraries operate from various points around the world. Extended voyages can leave from Miami, England, or even Australia before making their way to Hawaii!

However, the majority of one to two-week Hawaiian cruises will leave from the west coast. Foreign-flagged or built ships that travel between two US ports are required to stop at a foreign country sometime during the journey (in most cases, this will be Vancouver, Canada, or Ensenada, Mexico). This is due to the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA) , which aims to protect the American maritime industry.

You’ll find that most ships make these foreign country stops, except for NCL’s Pride of America. As the only ship to qualify for the PVSA , it’s allowed to travel between US ports and stay in Hawaii for the entire duration of the trip. The ship runs every week throughout the year and departs from and arrives back at Oahu’s Cruise Terminal 2, which is located in the city of Honolulu.

Because of the PVSA, the Pride of America follows a strict set of guidelines. Not only is the crew required to be 75% American, but they must also abide by US labor laws and wages, which can make voyages on this cruise more expensive than others.

What to Expect at Hawaii Cruise Ports

Because you’ll only have a limited time at each Hawaii cruise port, it’s crucial to plan out what you want to do beforehand. Should you book a shore excursion? Is it necessary to rent a car? Can you easily walk to a beach from the port? As you can see, there are lots of questions that need to be answered before you disembark!

To help make your stay on land as smooth as possible, we recommend getting our Cruising Hawaii Guide . It’s packed with insider tips on what to do on those days when you’re docked.

This includes over 90 shore excursions on Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island, including snorkel spots, volcano hikes, waterfall treks, and more! We’ll also share how to get around (taxi, Uber, or car rental) and a few self-guided excursion days to make the most of your time here. You will waste no time when you land at these Hawaii cruise ports.

Hawaii Cruise Ports: Your Ports of Call

Oahu (honolulu) cruise terminal.

As the starting and/or ending point for many Hawaiian cruises, Honolulu is likely to be included on your itinerary. The Pier 2 Cruise Terminal is centrally located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, making it a good jumping-off point for exploring the most popular attractions on Oahu.

If Honolulu is at the beginning or end of your trip, then we recommend spending at least two or three days here. We recommend doing this prior to your cruise to adjust for the jet lag and you can tick off some sights while also having downtime for a few lazy beach days.

Best Honolulu shore excursions :

  • Visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona
  • Take a sightseeing tour of the entire island
  • Learn how to surf on Waikiki Beach
  • Sail on a traditional wooden catamaran

Hawaii cruise ports Honolulu

Maui, Hawaii Cruise Ports

Kahului Harbor on the northern coast of the island is the main port of Maui. As a cargo facility, there isn’t much to do around the harbor, so we strongly recommend booking a tour or having a plan of action of what to do when you arrive.

The harbor is a 10-minute drive to the Kahului airport, which makes it easy to rent a car if you would like to drive around. And because of the port’s central location, it’s easy to reach most of Maui’s attractions in under an hour.

The second port on Maui is Lahaina Harbor (a tender port). At the moment, this terminal is closed after the devastating fires that ripped through Maui on August 8th, 2023. Because of the damage, Lahaina Harbor is no longer in operation for incoming cruises. While some cruise lines list Lahaina as a port of call for some 2024 departures, it’s unknown if it will be up and running at that time.

Best Maui shore excursions :

  • Drive (or be driven) through the Road to Hana
  • Snorkel the Molokini Crater
  • Marvel at the sunrise over Halekalani

Hawaii cruise ports Kahului Maui

Island of Hawaii Cruise Ports

Most ships make two stops on the Big Island, giving you ample time to see different things on both coasts. The Port of Hilo is located on the eastern side and is the gateway to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park. However, this is also the rainy side of the island, which means you can also expect to see lush rainforests and beautiful, cascading waterfalls!

Kailua Pier (a tender port) is situated on the western side of the island. From here, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, and tons of fun water sport opportunities! There’s also a charming town center within walking distance from the port with some great restaurants and bars.

Depending on your cruise operator, it’s possible to spend a night on land while the ship moves between ports. Doing so does cost extra (you’ll need to book a hotel for the night), but it allows you to take advantage of full-day tours, early-morning excursions, and even late-night or evening tours.

Best Island of Hawaii shore excursions :

  • Hike Volcanoes National Park
  • Sample coffee on a Kona coffee farm tour
  • Snorkel with Manta Rays at night
  • Go stargazing on Mauna Kea
  • Admire humpback whales on a whale watching tour (from December to March)

Hawaii cruise ports Kailua Pier

Kauai, Hawaii Cruise Port

If your cruise is going to Kauai, it will dock at Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue. Although its a bit outside of town, you can easily reach other popular destinations around the island by booking a tour, renting a car, or hiring a cab.

Places like Poipu and Wailua are close by, while Waimea Canyon and Hanalei are a bit further out and require more planning.

Some ships, like NCL’s Pride of America, spend two days docked at Kauai. With more time here than other ports of call, you’ll be able to see much more of the Garden Isle. It also means you can book early morning, late evening, or even full-day excursions.

Best Kauai shore excursions :

  • See the unspoiled Napali Coast
  • Hike the lush Waimea Canyon
  • Go mountain tubing through the Hawaiian backcountry

Kahului, Hawaii

We are deeply saddened to hear about the wildfires currently impacting the town of Lahaina in Maui.  We have a very special relationship with the people and islands of Hawaii, as we sail to the beautiful state year-round.  It is a magical destination and one that is highly sought out by our guests for its natural beauty, culture and unparalleled experiences. To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. As of September 3, 2023, we have recommenced our weekly overnight calls to Kahului, Maui following the guidance and encouragement of the Maui community, Hawai'i state governor Josh Green and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

Where You Dock in Maui (Kahului) – HI

Port Kahului is the island of Maui’s main seaport. The port serves both passenger and cargo ships. The cruise ship dock is located on the island’s east side and is located in an industrial zone and therefore aren’t any amenities for cruise ship passengers.

Getting Around Maui (Kahului) – HI

Most visitors find that the best way to see the sights are to go on an excursion or to rent a car.

It is a bit of a hike to walk from the cruise ship out of the industrial pier area. It is a circuitous pedestrian path out of the port, until you come to the Maui Mall. The city does not really cater to tourists. The best way to get around to tour the area and the island is by booking excursions or renting a car.

Rental Cars

The closest rental car companies to the pier are Hertz and Enterprise, but there are other local car rental companies in the area.

Roads in Maui are in great condition and most drivers are considerate. Locals do tend to drive slower, as they are on island time. You will need a valid photo drivers license and be at least 21 years of age to rent a car. A valid credit card is also required and a current auto insurance policy. Driving is on the right hand side of the road.

Most travelers find that the best way to get around Maui is by car. Depending on how much time you will have in port, or if this is a destination, you may want to rent a car. If you choose a taxi, there are plenty of options on the island, but it can be pricey to rely on them.

  • CB Taxi Maui
  • Maui Airport Cab Company

The Maui County Bus will run within and between major towns. It does not go to out-of-the-way locations. The Kahului Loop bus route will take you around town with the nearest bus stop at the Maui Mall about an 8 minute walk from the ship.

Shopping In Maui (Kahului) – HI

As with most stops in Hawaii, there are certain souvenirs you should keep an eye out for while stopping in Maui, like macadamia nuts, coffee, Hawaiian print clothing.  But for a special, unique item, look for hand-crafted items like jewelry or artwork.  Here are some shopping spots around Kahului:

Maui Mall Village

The Maui Mall is the closest shopping area to the port and contains a beauty parlor, nail salon, a drug store, TJ Maxx and clothing shops and even a Whole Foods. While you may not find artisan goods here, it’s a great spot if you forgot any essentials at home.

If you’re hungry, there are options for eating like Genki Sushi, IHOP, Pizza Hut, Siu’s Chinese Kitchen, and Subway. Finish it off with a trip to the Maui Candy Company and definitely visit Tasaka Guri-Guri .  In business for over 100 years, the frozen dessert known as guri-guri is a cross between sherbet and ice cream. The exact recipe for this dessert has been a family secret for over a century, although it is a mixture of flavored juice, guava, lemon-lime soda and condensed milk. It comes in two flavors, pineapple and strawberry.

Maui Swap Meet

If you happen to be docked in Kahului on a Saturday, a visit to the Maui Swap Meet is a must. Open from 7am to 1pm, the swap meet sets up in the parking lot of the University of Hawaii Maui College, which is basically across the harbor from where ships dock (about a 5 min. drive).

Since 1981, Maui Swap has been the biggest outdoor market on Maui. There is pretty much everything at this swap meet. You will find clothing, souvenirs, artwork and paintings, and a variety of flowers and fresh farm vegetables. Vendors will also have t-shirts, jewelry, soaps, jellies and jams and shaved ice. There is a small entrance fee to the swap meet (currently 50 cents for those over 12 years of age).

Moana Glass

With glass pieces done by Ryan Staub, Moana Glass is Kahului’s only furnace glassblowing studio and art gallery, and the gallery is located beside the port, so it’s a 2 minute walk from the ship.

Ryan has created blown glass in over 11 countries. His pieces are considered works of art, but many have a functional purpose as well. Hanging lights, glassware and illuminated pieces. You can also take a glass blowing class and make a small piece, like a drinking glass, starfish or ornament to take home.

Queen Kaahumanu Center

Home to the island’s only Macy’s, the Center also has national brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works.  There’s also a Starbucks if you collect their “Been There” mugs. There are also some local island-style shops.  Open for 50 years, the Center has a cinema and fresh, local produce and crafts. There are also several places to get something to eat or drink. Located a mile from the cruise port, it’s about a 4 minute drive.

Maui Specialty Chocolates

In business since 1990, this family-run handcrafted chocolate shop is a popular stop with tourists. The dark chocolate truffle mochi is a favorite, or try the peanut butter and milk chocolate waffles. Their gourmet chocolates also come in decorative containers or coffee mugs, making a great gift to take home. It is located a mile from the cruise port.

Dining In Maui (Kahului) – HI

Dining out can be expensive in Maui, which is why we have mentioned two food trucks below in our listing of places to eat. Hawaiian/Polynesian cuisine is readily available along with an abundance of fish and seafood on most menus.

Most restaurants offer a “plate lunch” which consists of rice, macaroni salad and meat or fish. Hawaii also has their own version of the snow cone that is shave (not shaved) ice. Ice is shaved off a large block and topped with flavored syrups or a scoop of ice cream in the middle.

Mai tais, pina coladas contain rum and fruit juices. The kiddos will enjoy “POG”, which is a blend of passion fruit, guava and orange juices.

Restaurant Matsu – 0.7 miles from pier

An unassuming, low-key eatery in Kahului, Matsu serves both Japanese and local specialties. The eatery is simple, and your meal is served on disposable plates, but reviewers say the food is very good, especially the teriyaki salmon. If you want to take it out, that is also available.

Ono Teppanyaki & Seafood – 1.4 miles from pier

Housed in a food truck, this local restaurant is in a court across from Costco. The steak and lobster are two favorites that are tender and juicy. They also have shrimp and ahi yellow tuna. Pair your selections with rice and grilled veggies. There are umbrellas and tables set up so that you can eat right there, too.

Tin Roof – 1.2 miles from pier

Traditional Hawaiian selections are served at the Tin Roof, which is also run by the members of the next generation of mom & pop shops, Top Chef finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon and his wife Janice. Born and raised in Hawaii, these owners source their ingredients from local farmers, fisherman and ranchers on Maui. They offer Mochiko chicken, pork belly, garlic shrimp, steak, garlic noodles, fat chow funn, spicy chicken sandwiches and an array of sides.

Acevedo’s Hawaicano Cafe – 0.8 miles from pier

Family owned and operated, the menu dishes reflect both their Hawaiian and Mexican backgrounds. They serve burritos, nachos, fish ceviche, pork carnitas and carne asada steak. If you are brave, try the crazy fries that are topped with beans, cheese, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, pickled jalapeno, sour cream, guacamole, and Jalapeno aioli sauce. That should keep you busy!

Geste Shrimp Truck – 1.4 miles from pier

Another food truck, which seems to be very popular in Maui, Geste Shrimp has scampi, hot and spicy and crab mac salad served with rice. Located next to the airport and across from the Costco Gas Bar, there are tables under umbrellas so that you can eat outside.

Things To Do in Maui (Kahului) – HI

Kahului is not commonly considered a tourist destination in itself, so you most likely will need to venture out of town to see the sights. There aren’t really any nice beaches near the port, so it may be best to rent a car and drove to other areas, or to get a day pass at a resort.

While many of the beaches have hotels that are on the waterfront, all beaches on Maui are public and it is required that they have public access. Remember, too, that while Hawaiian beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, they are also among the most dangerous because of large waves and strong currents.

Hawaii has a rating system for their beaches that are designed to help you identify a beach that is appropriate to your ocean skill level. Go here to learn what they rating system is: Rating Signs & Alerts

Hawaii monitors the weather conditions at its beaches, and gives an update every 15 minutes for its lifeguarded beaches. Before you head to the water, check for current conditions here: https://hawaiibeachsafety.com/

Resort Day Pass

Enjoy the beautiful beaches of Maui with all the amenities of a luxury resort with a day pass through ResortPass. Enjoy pools, a visit to the spa, food and beverage and more. Two of the featured resorts are less than a mile from the cruise pier. Click here for more details.

Located 5.5 miles from the cruise port, and not far from the airport, Baby Beach is protected by a reef, making the water a relatively calm place for younger swimmers and beach play, but there are no lifeguards or facilities.

Baldwin Beach Park

Located 6.5 miles from the cruise terminal,  this beach is great for surfers or sunbathers since it can be pretty wavy, but there are lifeguards and other facilities at the park.

Lower Pa’ia Beach

A little further up the road from Baldwin Beach Park, this beach has washrooms and showers but no lifeguards. The rolling surf is good for those who want to body surf, but if you want to swim, there is a hidden area about 200m to the west which is a good place for swimming if the ocean is calmer.

Hookipa Beach Park

In the same direction as the other beaches, about 9.5 miles from the cruise port, Hookipa Beach is a great place if you want to see turtles. Depending on the time of day, they could be on the sand, or in the sea. The beach isn’t great for swimming, but is popular with surfers, and at high tide, the beach is very narrow. But, there are lifeguards and washroom facilities.

Maui Ocean Center

Located just over 8 miles from the cruise port, on the opposite side of the island, this aquarium has both indoor and outdoor exhibits, with a turtle lagoon, shark pool, and a hands-on tide pool. The 54-foot-long clear tunnel allows you to see stingrays, sharks and over 2,000 fish up close and personal. There is also a restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches and salads. The gift shop has a variety of local products, crafts and souvenirs.

Haleakalā National Park

Located kind of in the middle of the eastern part of the island, about 28 miles from the cruise port, the lunar-like landscape of Haleakala Crater is a two-hour drive from sea level to the 10,023 foot summit. It is a “must-do” for many visitors to watch the sunrise from the Puu Ulaula Overlook, the volcano’s summit. If you are unable to make it there for sunrise, just know that it will still be about 30 degrees cooler at the summit and there can be heavy winds, rain or even snow.

The Road to Hana

While taking the Road to Hana isn’t advised to only do in a day, taking the trip to Hana from Kahului is only about 50 miles (closer than when you dock in Lahaina).  You can drive it yourself, but it can be stressful trying to keep your eyes on the road, plus see all the sights, so taking a tour definitely has the advantage of letting someone else do the driving.  Check out the shore excursion below that offers views by road and air.

If you’re determined to rent a car and do it yourself, read this to avoid these 5 mistakes when on the road to Hana.

Kahului cab or lyft options from port

Cool Cruiser

We will be docking in Kahului … I just booked a helicopter tour so need options to get us from the port to Kahului Heliport and back

How common are lyft/uber in the area?  What about taxis at the port?  Should we schedule ahead with someone or just wing it?

appreciate your insights as I figure this out

Both are present and some will be hanging around the port. But there isn't an unlimited supply of both like in some bigger cities. Booking in advance is not a bad idea.

In Kahului, since it is near the main airport, there tends to be a fairly steady supply of Uber and Lyft (Uber tends to have a bit more drivers but both are available). Other parts of the island the general rule is that Uber/Lyft service can be spotty (think 15-20 minute waits) and availability is better in the evening than the morning.

But around the Kahului you should be fine with either at any time of day. For a shorter ride like this Uber/Lyft would be the way to go. I tend to only reserve a taxi for longer trips (like when I go from OGG to Kaanapali).

Thanks all…. Uber/Lyft it us!!!! I prefer Lyft but use both

PRPLE, have you been on your Hawaiian cruise yet?

I had the exact same question about trying to either reserve a taxi or Uber/Lyft so that we could go from the cruise port to the heliport for our helicopter tour. The guy I talked to at the helicopter company said that it might be preferable to reserve a taxi because they couldn't cancel on you. Our helicopter tour is at 7:30 am on our second day in Kahului, Maui (we arrive the day before and are docked overnight).

10 Best Cruises to Hawaii — From Luxury Sailings to Expedition Ships

A cruise around the 50th state is an excellent way to see as much of the islands as possible in a limited amount of time.

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the 50th state's "Aloha" spirit. Each island offers a different climate, landscape, and style, and even on the same island, there are significant variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kailua-Kona region on the west coast tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is a great way to accomplish that, according to Pam Jacobs , travel advisor at Travel Store in Palos Verdes Estates, California. “People love the inter-island cruises because all meals are included, so it’s an economical as well as convenient way to see the islands. You unpack once and avoid getting in and out of airports and checking in and out of hotels. It’s the best way to island hop.”

Families and travelers with limited time enjoy the seven-day Norwegian Cruise Lines Honolulu to Honolulu round trip cruises, while retirees may opt for a longer cruise from the West Coast with more days at sea. You can embark from several ports on the West Coast, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle. “Many Hawaiʻi cruises are part of longer voyages to the South Pacific, Australia, or around the world,” says Jacobs, a cruise and train travel specialist.

“The shore excursions on the cruises are the same things a tourist would do on land — go to a luau, play golf, visit an attraction like the Arizona Memorial, or just relax on the beach — and it’s all arranged for you,” according to Jacobs. One more bit of advice from our cruise expert: “Always arrive a day before your cruise to be sure you’re there and ready. You’ll have time to explore and relax before boarding.”

Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaiʻi . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so choosing a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, so hopefully this list will inspire you to get started.

Holland America: 17-day Circle Hawaii - Round Trip from San Diego

Courtesy of Holland America

This cruise on the 1,432-passenger Zaandam departs from San Diego and spends five days at sea before arriving in Honolulu at 8 a.m. Optional activities include a trip to Pearl Harbor, a hike on Diamond Head, a road trip around Oahu, an evening at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and a day on Waikiki Beach. After an overnight sail to Kauai, the ship docks at Nawiliwili Harbor. Guests can take a Wailua River cruise to the Fern Grotto , a tour of a coffee plantation, or a trip to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Maui is the next island on the itinerary, and guests can choose a drive to Haleakala Crater , a snorkel adventure aboard the new Reef Explorer, or a drive to Maui’s Upcountry or rainforest. The final two stops, Hilo and Kona, are on the Big Island. In Kona, there’s an optional Atlantis submarine trip to explore coral gardens or a catamaran cruise. Options include visits to Volcanoes National Park and in Hilo, guests can tour Rainbow Falls or go for a zipline adventure. After four days at sea, you'll stop in Ensenada, Mexico, before returning to San Diego.

Royal Caribbean: 9-night Hawaii Cruise - Vancouver to Oahu

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean Cruises

This trip aboard the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas offers guests much to do during days at sea, with a rock climbing wall, FlowRider surf simulator, and Northstar, a 360-degree observation capsule 300 feet above sea level. “For travelers who have the time for these days at sea, the activities on the ship are a big part of the fun,” according to Jacobs. After departing Vancouver , British Columbia, the ship spends four days at sea before it arrives in Honolulu for a day of exploring Oʻahu with a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center or Waikiki Beach. The ship crosses the International Date Line with a day at sea and then passes the beautiful Napali Coast of Kauai, famous for its dramatic cliffs rising from the ocean. The final stop is Oahu, and passengers spend as much time as they want exploring Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, or the rest of the island before heading home.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 7-Day Hawaii Inter-Island Cruise from Honolulu

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruises

Spend a week exploring four of Hawaii's islands on this cruise aboard the 2,186-passenger Pride of America , the only ship sailing to four Hawaiian islands in seven days year-round. “These Norwegian Cruise Line trips are a dependable way to see the islands with their convenient weekly departures,” Jacobs says. “You can see the other islands and spend some time in Oahu before or after your cruise.” Onboard activities include basketball, volleyball, video games, theater, hot tubs, spa, and shopping. Departing Honolulu on Saturday evening, the ship heads to Kahului, Maui for two days with options like a drive on the Road to Hana, a catamaran cruise to Molokini for snorkeling with sea turtles, a tour to Haleakala Crater, and more. Next is a day in Hilo on the Big Island, where guests can see a volcano, rain forest, waterfalls, or a lush botanical garden. On the other side of the island in Kona, snorkeling, fishing, cruising in a catamaran, and a reef tour are among optional activities. On Kauai , passengers can enjoy a traditional luau, hike through a rainforest, go kayaking, or take in Waimea Canyon . The cruise ends the following Saturday back in Honolulu, where passengers can explore the city, nearby Pearl Harbor , or Oahu's North Shore.

UnCruise Adventures: Hawaiian Seascapes

Courtesy of UnCruise

“The UnCruise expedition-style cruises focus on the destinations rather than the ship,” according to Pam Jacobs. “The experience is immersive, eco-friendly, and there’s always great camaraderie with the small groups.” This seven-night cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer begins in Kona, on the Big Island, with a champagne welcome from the captain. The following two days feature a hike up the slopes of Hualalai with a naturalist guide, night snorkeling among Giant Pacific Manta rays, and plenty of opportunities for swimming or kayaking. On day four in Maui, guests can stroll through historic Lahaina, snorkel among coral and sea turtles, or kayak in a marine sanctuary. Lanai is the next island, where guests can paddleboard or kayak past 1,000-foot-high sea cliffs, go snorkeling, take a bike excursion, or visit the quaint Lanai Culture and Heritage Center. On Molokai, guests can learn how taro is cultivated and turned into poi , or they can hike to a spectacular waterfall in Halawa Valley . At the Molokai Museum, a lesson on the island's history is followed by a pa'ina (feast), complete with traditional music. Passengers disembark the following day at Kaunakakai , where they can either transfer to Molokai Airport or extend their stay.

Shipboard programs for youths, teens, and families provide something for everyone. On the Big Island, guests can zipline through the rainforest or visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . Next is Oahu, where activities include a tour of Pearl Harbor, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, and a tour of the only royal palace in the United States . On Kauai, there are hiking , snorkeling, and kayaking adventures. On Maui, guests can sail on a catamaran, Zodiac, or submarine. After four days at sea, passengers have a day to explore Ensenada, Mexico , on the Baja California peninsula, before the Ruby Princess sails back to San Francisco.

In Hilo, on day eight, guests can explore waterfalls, volcanoes, wineries, and gardens on the lush coast of the Big Island. The ship cruises to Kona on the other side of the island for another two days of snorkeling or other onshore activities and then spends a day passing the Napali Coast of Kauai, where steep cliffs rise from the ocean and sea caves and waterfalls can be seen from the ship. After another day of cruising, the final stop is Honolulu, where guests are free to enjoy Oahu at their leisure before heading back to the mainland.

The first stop is Nawiliwili on the island of Kauaʻi, where guests can visit Waimea Canyon State Park, called “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” or explore a restored sugar plantation in Old Koloa Town. The next stop is Kahului, Maui, where you can spend a day at the beach, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, or Botanical Gardens.
