Bekal Fort is the landmark of Kasaragod. This largest fort in Kerala spreads over 40 acres stands amidst the roaring sea with unending waves. The golden expanse of this fabulous beach surrounding the Bekal fort is called as the Bekal fort beach.

Valiyaparamba fishing community is an island separated from the mainland by backwaters, with the Arabian Sea as one of its borders. Valiyaparamba backwaters, around 30 kilometres from Bekal, is one of Kerala’s most attractive backwater boroughs. The island, which is located in the River Tejeswini, is well-known for its natural beauty.

Kasargod is a land of seven languages and many civilizations. The site of peaceful coexistence of Hindu, Muslim, and Christian religions. PLACES OF MAJOR ATTRACTION AND IMPORTANCE

ADOOR is located 45 kilometres east of Kasargod. It is well-known for its ancient Siva Temple, which is said to have been established by Arjuna. According to tradition, this is the site of the KirathaYuddham battle between Arjuna and Lord Siva. The nearby jungle, which is not frequented by humans, is thought to be the home of Lord Siva and his celestial consort. Nature’s bounty is the stream below the valley.

Ajanur hamlet is home to the well-known MadiyanKulom temple. It is roughly five kilometres from Kanhangad, the Hosdurg taluk’s headquarters. The temple’s major deity is Bhadrakali, however there are more deities such as Kshetrapalan, Bhagavathi, and Bhairavan. A unique feature of this temple is that a Brahmin priest only performs pooja at noon, while Maniyanis perform pooja in the morning and evening. The temple’s festivals take place during the months of Edavam (May, June) and Dhanu (December, January), and all poojas are done on these days.

These are the two most well-known asramams in Kanhangad. Swami Ramadas, a prominent Vaishnava saint of modern times, founded Anandashramam in 1939, about five kilometres east of Kanhangad Railway Station. The main asramam and accompanying buildings are placed in a picturesque location among shaded mango, coconut, and other orchards. The devotees retreat to a hill to the east of the asramam for solitary meditation, and the surrounding broad landscape can be observed in its natural grandeur from its west. The location at the highest point of the hill is so captivating that devotees who go up the hill and sit silently are rewarded with deep serenity and tranquillity.

Swami Nityananda founded the Nityanandasramam, which is located on a hill about half a kilometre south of the Hosdurg taluk office. Originally, the location was part of a forest. Swami Nityananda built 45 guhas (caves) in a steep slope here. A temple was built in 1963 in the style and architecture of Gujarat’s famous Somanatha Temple. One of the asramam’s highlights is a full-size statue of Swami Nityananda in a sitting posture made of panchaloha.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s only lake temple and the Moolasthanam (original seat) of Ananthapadmanabha Swami (Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple), located 5 kilometres from Kumbla. According to local legend, Ananthapadmanabha first settled here. KINFRA’s industrial park is located here.

CHANDRAGIRI FORT

Chandragiri is located three kilometres south of Kasargod. It features a big square on the river’s southern bank, high above the Chandragiri. Sivappa Nayak of Bednore, who established his dominance over the area and erected a line of forts, is supposed to have built the fort in the 17th century. The Chandragiri river, on whose banks it rises, was traditionally the boundary between Kerala and the Tuluva Kingdom. Five miles from Chandragiri, there is a lovely bridge across the Chandragiri river in Thekkil. A mosque sits nearby, and the vista of the bridge with the mosque in the background is one of the most beautiful sights on the NH 17 trip from Kannur to Kasargod. The Chandragiri Hills are home to Kerala’s longest railway tunnel. A yacht club has recently been established here.

The municipal town is located on the banks of the Chandragiri River. The meeting point of numerous languages and cultures, where eight languages are spoken. Kasaragod Saree’s grandeur, equal to Kanjeepuram’s, is a commercial cynosure. Kasargod is a cash crop emporium, with cash crops such as Areacanut and Coconut. Worshiping places of historical significance include the Malik-DeenarJuma Masjid, the Malika Arjuna temple, and the Dolors Church. The rain forest at Konnakkad, around 30 kilometres north-east of Kanhangad. Beautiful picnic area that is also good for trekking. Thalakkaveri in Coorg’s Brahmagiri mountain range is close by. Kodaikkanal’s genetic beauty reflected.

The Nileshwar Rajas built this mud fort, which was afterwards annexed by the Bednore Nayaks in the 18th century. A Juma masjid and a Hindu shrine are nearby.

Kasargod suburb – 4 kilometres to the north, where the famous eight-day discourse between Madhavacharya, the great Dwaita Philosopher, and Trivikrama Pandit, the famous Adwaita Scholar, took place in the presence of King Jayasimha of Kumbla, ended in Madhavacharya’s victory and Trivikrama Pandit’s acceptance of Dwaita philosophy. MADHUR TEMPLE

KUMBALA 13 kilometres north of Kasargod. The historic residence of the Rajas of Kumbala. The town is located on a forested peninsula in a lagoon separated from the sea by a sand spit and linked to it by a small canal. ParthiSubbha, Yakshagana’s father, was born here in the 18th century. Here is the well-known Gopalakrishna temple.

MADHUR is located 8 kilometres north-east of Kasargod. The well-known SrimadAnantheswara Vinayaka temple is located here. The temple’s magnificent architectural, imposing structure, with its turrests and gables and copper plate roofing, stands majestically against the picturesque land scape of hills, paddy fields, and gardens, with the Madhuvahini River meandering gently in front of it.

The Madhur Temple is a Siva temple dedicated to SrimadAnantheswara. However, the deity Maha Ganapathi is revered. Madharu, a harijan woman, is supposed to have discovered the temple’s Sivalingam. The temple’s particular festival is MoodappaSeva, which involves covering the gigantic figure of Maha Ganapathi with appam made of ghee and grains. Due to the high costs involved, the festival is only held on a regular basis. After a 160-year hiatus, it was re-enacted in April 1962, and again in April 1992.

Namaskara Mandapam

The temple’s Namaskara Mandapam is adorned with magnificent wood statues of puranic heroes. The Mantapam in the temple building’s interior as well as the outside facade of the second and third storeys of the main building are also adorned with beautiful and exquisite wood carvings. Tippu Sultan of Mysore is reported to have besieged the temple during his invasion and became thirsty, drinking water from the temple well, which changed his mind and caused him to leave the temple without causing any damage. MALIK DINAR MOSQUE

MALIK DINAR MOSQUE Over the years, Kasargod acquired the considerable importance as a centre of Islam on the west coast. It is the site of one of the mosques believed to have been founded by Malik Ibn Dinar. The mosque, Juma Masjid, which is one of the best kept and most attractive in the district, is located at Thalangara. It contains the grave of Malik Ibn Mohammed, one of the descendants of Malik Ibn Dinar and the place is sacred to Muslims. Another notable mosque, in Kasaragod is the Theruvath Mosque which is in the centre of the town. An important local celebration takes place every year in commemoration of the arrival of Malik Ibn Dinar. The Uroos attract pilgrims from all over India.

The Kasargod-Perla road is eight kilometres east of Kasargod. Kumbala Rajas’ historic palaces can still be found. MANJESWAR It is located near Kerala’s northernmost extremity and is historically and religiously significant. For a long time, it was the centre of a thriving community known as the Gowda Saraswatha or Konkini Brahmins. BangraManjeswar is well-known for its two ancient JainaBastis. VANAM TULUR Kekulom is another name for Kekulom (the eastern place). This temple is dedicated to Kshethrapalan and Bhagavathy and is located near Panathur Temple. The yearly celebration, which lasts eight days, draws a large throng from all across the district as well as from Coorg.

Bordered by the hilly Kodagu and Mangalore districts of Karnataka, it is the headquarters of Kasargod district and among the secluded places to visit as part of Kerala packages . Places to visit in Kasaragod

Kasaragod- The land of gods!

Situated at the northernmost tip of Kerala, Kasaragod is known world wide for its coir and hand-loom industries. It is a land of abundant natural beauty and cultural and historical significance. The 12 rivers scattered across its terrain adds to its enchanting beauty.

The derivation of the name Kasaragod, has two theories associated with it. One is that it is derived from two Sanskrit words “Kaasara” meaning lake or pond and “kroda” meaning where a treasure is kept. The other theory is that it got its name due to the abundance of Kaasaraka/Kaasakra (Strychnos nus vomica) trees.

The district is walled all along its eastern border by the western ghats and by the Lakshadweep sea along its western borders.

Kasaragod has a long history dating from prehistoric times. Arabs visited this land between the 9th and 14th centuries as it was then an important trading centre.

Kasaragod has seen many rulers along it history. The Kolathiri Raja and Ikkeri kayaks has ruled Kasaragod. Tippu Sultan conquered the district and later surrendered it to the British Government in 1792. After the independence Kasaragod belonged to Karnataka state. It became part of Kerala in 1956 and a separate district in 1984.

Kasaragod has a strong foot hold in the cultural landscape of Kerala. It is famous for the art forms of Yaksha Gaana, Bombeyatto and Theyyam. Poorakkali, Kolkali, Oppana etc add colour to the lives of this land. Reasons to visit Kasaragod do not end there. The golden sandy beaches, forts which stand as tall testaments to the historical and archaeological significance of the land, mesmerising hills and rivers and the warm and embracing people make this district a must stop destination for tourist.

1. Bekal  Fort

Situated 16 km south of the Kasaragod town, is the towering Bekal Fort dating back to the glories of 17th century Kerala. The giant keyhole shaped fort that changed hands over many dynasty of Indian rulers, finally ended up in the hands of British empire about two centuries ago. It went through many transitions along the journey, as K.P. Padmanabha Menon writes in his book on Kerala History .

The present day Bekal fort originally built by the rulers of the ancient Kadampa dynasty is believed to be the residence allotted to the Vadakkelamkur, the third son of Kolathiri or Chirakkal Rajas until Shivappa Nayaka of Bednoor invaded the region in 1650. It was Hyder Ali, the Mysore ruler who then captured the stronghold on Bekal.

During Tipu Sultan’s great military expedition to capture Malabar, Bekal Fort served as his important military station for his army. It was at the fourth Anglo-Indian war that Tipu was defeated by East India Company and fort became the headquarters of the newly organised Bekal Taluk of South Canara District in Bombay presidency.

Bekal Taluk was later renamed as Kasaragod Taluk. Slowly the political and economic magnitude of Bekal and its port declined considerably. With the state reorganization in 1956 Kasaragod became part of Kerala.

What makes the Bekal fort special is it is the largest and best preserved fort in the whole of Kerala, bordered by a splendid beach. Once equipped with Giant canons, the fort was strategically planned for security and defence.

An important feature of this fort is the water-tank with its flight of steps. The fort has a tunnel opening towards the south and a magazine for keeping ammunition with broad steps leading to the Observation Tower, from where one has can have a great view of towns in the vicinity like Kanhangad, Pallikkara, Bekal, Kottikkulam, and Uduma.

The nearest railway station is Kasaragod, on the Kozhikode-Mangalore-Mumbai route, about 16 km away and the nearest airport is Mangalore, about 50 km from Kasaragod town.

2. Madhur Temple

Madhur Temple or Madhur Madanantheswara Siddhi Vinayaka Temple located 8kms away from Kasaragod town is the most famous Ganapathi temple amongst the six temples of ancient tulu nadu.

Though the preceding deity is Siva the temple is famous for lord Ganapati who is also worshipped here.

Set against the enchanting landscape of Madhuvahini river, the temple architecture has influences of both hindu and Jain architectural styles which in itself is a peculiar combination. Thus it attracts not only devotees but also architectural students and enthusiasts. The temple was built by the Mypadi- rulers of Kumbala in the 10th century and later renovated to its present form in the 15th century.

The Oval shape structure with a three tiered dome, with the upper two stories completed with copper plate roofing is one of its kind. The hand carved wooden pillars and beams stand as proof to the craftsmen ship of a bygone era. The ceiling of the namaskara mandapam of Madhur temple is decorated with beautiful figures of puranic heroes in wood carvings depicting various episodes of Ramayana.

Tippu Sultan, when he attacked Kumbala borders decided to demolish the temple, but later changed his mind. He left only with a cut he made with his sword which can still be seen here.

Kashi viswanatha, sasth, durga, subramanya and narasimha are the upa devadas. The annual utsavam begins with Kodiyettu on Meda Vishu sankrama day. Vinayak chathurthi, navarathri, Vishu and shivaratri are the main celebrations.

It is situated at a distance of 8kms from Kasaragod Railway station and 16 kms from Mangalore Airport.

3.Ranipuram Hills

Situated about 750 meters above sea level, Ranipuram is a trekkers paradise. Within close proximity to bhagamandala forests, this region is blessed with abundant natural beauty. Its varied vegetation includes evergreen shola woods, monsoon forests and grasslands all of which add to the charm of the place.

Ranipuram is often compared to Ooty due to its scenic beauty. It was earlier known as Madathumala, whose extensive forests merged into those of Karnataka. This offbeat place tucked away from the concrete jungles is a much loved destination for trekking enthusiasts.

Exploring these hills on foot surrounded by the calm of the nature is not just a serene experience for tourists but much enjoyed by nature photographers as well. The two and a half kilometre trek up the summit promises you not only a breath taking view but also an adventure one can never forget. Jeep and bus services are available from Panathady and Kanhangad in kasaragod town to Ranipuram.

It is situated at a distance of 45kms from Kanhangad railway station and 125kms from Mangalore International Airport.

4.Valiyaparamba backwaters

Situated about 30 kms from Bekal, Valiyapramba in Kasaragod district is slowly finding its way into the tourist maps of Kerala. It is the northern part of Kavvayi backwaters. It is the third largest backwaters in Kerala .

The unspoilt beauty of these backwaters are enough to capture the attention of any nature lover. Fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous islands valiyaparamba backwaters exude a rustic charm. Handloom, agriculture, fishing and coir industries of Valiyaparamba have only added to its appeal.

Traditional kettuvallam (houseboat) cruises in these backwaters experiencing the panoramic view of the coconut groves and its many islands is one to remember. The island is also known for its coconut husking and mussel cultivation.

Nearest railway station from Valiyaparamba is Cheruvathur, located just 5 km away. Nearest Airports are located at a distance of 100 km and 150 km- Mangalore and Karipur international airports respectively.

Ananthapura lake temple is a 9 th century hindu temple situated at Ananthapur village of Kasaragod district at a distance of 6 kms from Kumbala. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is built within a lake spread over 2 acres and is assessable only by a bridge.

It is believed to be the Moolastahnam (original seat) of Anantha Padmanabha Swami temple in Triruvananthapuram, the southernmost district of Kerala. It is not only believed to be the original home of Anantha Padmanabha but is also the only lake temple in Kerala.

History of the temple has many stories and myths associated with it, but with little proof. It is believed that Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam, the great Tulu Brahmin sage performed apoojas and did penance here. Lord Narayana (vishnu) who assumed the form of an orphan boy was taken under his wings by the sage. Later when scolded for his juvenile pranks the boy disappeared. Vilwamangalam realising that the boy was lord Narayana himselfset out in search of him ans finally got darshana from Lord Vishnu.

The temple’s myths include the story of Babia,the crocodile, who is cconsidered the guardian of the temple.

Babia is frequently sighted in the lake and feeds on offerings made by the devotees. It is claimed that this crocodile is vegetarian and do not harm any human beings or fish in the lake.

Around the 2-acre lake within which the present temple is situated, there are ruins of the temple complex from 9 th century. The temple is open to all regardless of caste and creed.

Another feature is that the idols of the sanctum sanctorum were not made of metal or stone, but with a rare combination of medicinal substances called the “Kadu Sarkara yogam”. It was replaced by panchaloha idols in 1972.

The principal deity here is Lord Vishnu, found herein a sitting position over five hooded serpent king Lord Anantha.

6. Kappil beach

Situated about 6kms from Bekal Fort, kappil Beach is a relatively unexplored and secluded beach. This calm and relaxing beach – backwater destination is ideal for a picnic with family or friends. The golden sands and the mesmerising Arabian sea and thick groves of casuarinas trees, is enough to transport one to another world of serenity.

If you like a little adventure, then make sure you take a boat ride here at the beach. Many small and medium sized ferry boats take people out in to the sea for a ride. This shaky ride is not for the faint hearted but definitely worth every penny.

One can find food stalls and small shops all along the beach and can indulge in some snacks and savouries as well as shop at decent rates.

The Kodi cliff nearby is gradually becoming a popular trekking point. The breath-taking view of the Arabian sea from the cliff top is a sweet reward for the climb.

Kappil beach is located 14 kms away from Kasaragod railway station and 50kms from Mangalore airport.

7.Malik Deenar Mosque

Situated at Thalangara in Kasaragod, Malik Deenar Mosque is one of the most attractive and best preserved mosques in Kerala.  This ancient and historic mosque is believed to have been built by Malik Ibn Deenar, a follower of prophet Muhammed.

Malik ibn Deenar is famous for bringing Islam to Kerala. In   624 AD, Malik Ibn Deenar and 12 of his trade associates landed in Kerala. Their mission was not just trade but to propagate Islam in other parts of the world. The delegation consisted of Sharaf Ibn Malik, his brother Malik Ibn Deenar and his nephew Malik Ibn Habeeb Ibn Malik.

They attracted the attention of then ruler Cheraman Perumal. Fascinated by this new religion, Perumal embraced Islam. The mosque was built in 624 AD  and later reconstructed in 1809 AD with local support and help.

Malik Deenar Uroos, commemoration of the arrival of Malik Ibn Deenar in Kerala is celebrated here every year.

The mosque is situated a kilometre away from Kasaragod railway station and about 64kms from Mangalore airport.

Srimath Anantheshwar Temple is located at Manjeshwar in Kasaragod district of Kerala state, India.

Srimath Anantheshwar Temple is also known as Manjulakshetra. Srimath Anantheshwar Temple is situated 17 Kilometres south of Mangalore on the Cochin – Mangalore section of the Southern Railway, the Temple is about a Kilometre and a half from the nearby Railway Station, being easily accessible by metalled road.

3. Cambridge

In England’s other great historic university city, Cambridge , you can tour a  college , and spend time marveling at the intricate vaulting of King’s College Chapel . But no trip to Cambridge is complete without an attempt to take a punt (flat-bottomed boat) along the River Cam by the picturesque Backs , the leafy, green lawns behind the city's finest colleges – an experience that offers the best views of the exquisite architecture. In a nation packed with pretty cities, Bath  stands out as the belle of the ball. Founded by the Romans, who established the spa resort of Aquae Sulis to take advantage of the area’s hot springs , Bath hit its stride in the 18th century, when the rich industrialist Ralph Allen and architects John Wood the Elder and John Wood the Younger oversaw the city’s transformation into a model of Georgian architecture at its most refined . 5. Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is one of the country's most dramatic Roman ruins, a 2000-year-old procession of abandoned forts, garrisons, towers and milecastles marching across the wild and lonely landscape of northern England. While the Romans built the fortification to defend and control its territory, this edge-of-empire barrier also symbolized the boundary of civilized order in the ancient world: to the north of the Roman settlement lay the unruly land of the marauding Celts. Near Newcastle  you can visit Segedunum , the wall’s last stronghold, for an insight into life during Roman times.

With its Roman and Viking heritage, ancient city walls and maze of cobbled streets, York is a living record of English history. A magnificent circuit of 13th-century walls encloses a medieval spider’s web of “snickelways” (narrow alleys), each one the focus of a ghost story or historical character. At the city’s heart lies the immense, awe-inspiring York Minster , the biggest medieval cathedral in all of northern Europe, and one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. Admire feats of engineering of a more recent vintage at the National Railway Museum , the world’s largest collection of historic locomotives.

York’s long history and rich heritage are woven into virtually every brick and beam, and the modern, tourist-oriented city – with its myriad museums, restaurants, cafes and traditional pubs – is a carefully maintained showcase of that heritage.

Local tip: You’ll find some of the finest views of York from its old city walls, particularly the bucolic section behind the Minster. 

7. The Peak District

Curiously, you won’t find many peaks in the Peak District . You will find blissful miles of tumbling moorland, plunging valleys, eroded gritstone crags, lush farmland and ancient pocket-sized villages. This beautiful landscape attracts a veritable army of outdoor enthusiasts – cyclists, hikers, cavers and rock climbers – on summer weekends, while those seeking more relaxing enjoyment can admire the rural market and famous puddings of Bakewell, the Victorian pavilions of spa-town Buxton, and the architectural drama of Chatsworth House – the “Palace of the Peak.”

8. Brighton

Barely an hour’s train ride from the capital, the seaside city of Brighton has a quirky character that’s completely its own. Overlooking the English Channel on England’s pebbly south coast, this is a city that's long been known for its oddball, alternative character. The warren of streets known as the Lanes is a good place to soak up the vibe, with vegan cafes, espresso bars, chaotic pubs, record stores and bric-a-brac shops. You'll also find the UK ’s biggest queer scene here, and the region’s best small clubs. The highlight for the sightseeing visitor is the Royal Pavilion , a 19th-century party palace built by the Prince Regent, who kicked off Brighton’s love of the outlandish.

9. Stonehenge

Mysterious and compelling, Stonehenge is England’s most famous ancient site . Even though people have been drawn to this myth-laden ring of boulders for more than 5000 years, we still don’t know quite why it was built. An ultramodern makeover at the ancient site has brought an impressive visitor center and the closure of an intrusive road (now restored to grassland). The result is a strong sense of historical context, with dignity and mystery returned to an archaeological gem.

Most visitors gaze at the approximately 25-ton stones from behind the perimeter fence, yet with enough planning, you can arrange an early-morning or evening tour and gain access to the inner ring itself. In the slanting sunlight, away from the crowds, it’s an ethereal place. This is an experience that stays with you.

10. Stratford-upon-Avon

The pretty town of Stratford-upon-Avon is where William Shakespeare was born and later shuffled off this mortal coil. Today, its tight knot of Tudor streets form a living map of Shakespeare’s life. Huge crowds of thespians and theater lovers come to take in a play at the famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre . Bard fans will love visiting the five historic houses owned by Shakespeare and his relatives and  the schoolroom where he was educated, before taking a respectful detour to the old stone church where he was laid to rest.

11. Liverpool

It’s hard not to be infected by Liverpudlians’ love for their hometown. The love endured despite decades of decay and all manner of social ills – finding its expression in a renowned gallows humor and an obsession with football. With some of the most passionate crowds in the country, taking in a game at either Liverpool FC or Everton FC is a rite of passage here.

Outside of the stadium, the rejuvenated waterfront is once again the heart of Liverpool . The focal point is Albert Dock, an iconic docklands flanked by protected buildings, including a batch of top museums. The Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum ensure the good and bad sides of Liverpool’s history are explored in equal measure, while the Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Story museum celebrate popular culture and the city’s most famous musical sons (still).

12. The Cotswolds

A tangle of impossibly quaint villages of rose-clad cottages and honey-colored stone, The Cotswolds  is a region that spreads over six English counties. It’s a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its most wonderful quality is that no matter where you go or how lost you get, you’ll still end up in a spot with a charming village green, a pub with sloping floors and fine ales, and a view of the lush green hills. Crisscrossed by long-distance trails including the 102-mile Cotswold Way , these gentle yet dramatic hills are perfect for walking, cycling and horse-riding.

Local tip: It’s easy to leave the crowds behind and find your very own slice of medieval England here – and some of the best boutique hotels in the country.

A little weird, occasionally weather-beaten and all-around wonderful, the classic northern seaside town of Whitby has haunted lanes, fossil-hunting and arguably England’s finest fish-and-chips. The huddle of 18th-century fisher’s cottages along the East Cliff are testament to its longtime role as a busy commercial and fishing port: it was here that 18th-century explorer Captain James Cook earned his sea legs. Atop the West Cliff, a sandy beach, amusement arcades and promenading holidaymakers show Whitby’s beach-resort side.

Keeping a watchful eye over the town and the River Esk that divides it is an atmospheric ruined abbey , the inspiration and setting for part of Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror story Dracula . But tales of witchery and ghostly legends have haunted Whitby ever since Anglo-Saxon St Hilda landed here to found a monastic community in 657 CE.

Planning tip: The town embraces its pseudo-sinister reputation, which culminates in two hugely successful Goth Weekends each year.

14. The Lake District

William Wordsworth and his Romantic friends were the first to champion the charms of the Lake District  – and it's not hard to see what stirred them. Already the UK’s most popular national park, the Lake District also became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, in recognition of its long history of hill-farming. But for most people it’s the chance to hike the humpbacked fells and drink in the gorgeous scenery that keeps them returning year after year.

The region is filled with outdoor pursuits, from lake cruises to mountain walks – excursions that help reveal why the region has such deep literary connections. In addition to Wordsworth, writers who found inspiration here include Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Arthur Ransome and Beatrix Potter.

15. The Eden Project

A cross between a lunar landing station and a James Bond villain’s lair, the gigantic hemispherical greenhouses of the Eden Project  have become a symbol of Cornwall ’s renaissance. Built in an abandoned clay pit near St Austell to mark the start of the new millennium, and now considered one of Britain’s modern architectural wonders, the Eden Project aims to explore issues of environment and conservation, and point the way to a cleaner, greener future for us all.

Exhibits cover everything from global warming to rubber production and chocolate-making. The glass-domed “biomes” recreate major world climate systems in microcosm, from the lush jungles of the Amazon rainforest (complete with treetop walkway winding through the canopy) to the olive trees, citrus groves and colorful flowers of the Mediterranean, South Africa and California. It’s incredibly impressive – not to mention educational, and inspiring, too.

Shoulder-deep in history, London ’s rich seams of eye-opening antiquity appear at every turn. The city’s architecture pens a beguiling biography, and a multitude of buildings – the Tower of London , Westminster Abbey , Big Ben – are internationally recognizable landmarks. It’s also a tireless innovator of art and culture, a city of ideas and imagination. This legacy is enshrined at world-class institutions such as the British Museum , Natural History Museum  and the Science Museum , as well as such world-leading art galleries as the  Tate Modern , Tate Britain , the National Gallery  and the recently reopened National Portrait Gallery , all of which are free to visit. 

Local tip:  However you budget your time and money in London, make sure you take in a show. Big names perform on  the West End (London’s equivalent of Broadway), and on the South Bank at the National Theatre  and  the Old Vic . Smaller theaters from the Almeida to the Lyric Hammersmith are places to discover up-an-coming talent.

While Iceland isn't the only place in the world to view the northern lights, the Nordic country's prime location near the Arctic Circle means the light show can be visible for more than 100 nights per year. And 2024 in particular will provide prime viewing opportunities.

"Interestingly, the sun is reaching its solar maximum (increased activity that's conducive for northern lights) over the next few years, so 2024, 2025 and 2026 are prime years for getting a great light show," explains Ryan Connolly, co-founder of tour operator Hidden Iceland.

While you're never guaranteed to see the northern lights in Iceland, a little planning and forethought can pay off. Read on to discover the best time of year to visit, the most scenic places to go, unique tour options and more.

According to the country's tourism authority, the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland is from September to mid-April, between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. – and particularly around midnight.

Within that September to April period, there's some debate about the optimal time to see the lights. Connolly cautions against a visit between late March and mid-April as well as in early September "so you don't have to stay up too late to watch the sun set." He and other experts recommend the following timeframes:

• November to January: You're generally more likely to catch the northern lights during these darkest months. The sun barely rises around this time of the year, and the extremely long nights mean a longer window for the phenomenon to appear each day.

Spring and fall equinoxes: Although midwinter probably offers the best chance of catching the aurora, some people recommend viewing it around the spring or fall equinoxes – that is, around March 19 and Sept. 22 (these dates change slightly each year). The science behind this timing is complex: In short, there tends to be more geomagnetic disturbance around the equinoxes, leading to stronger auroras. But don't forget that the nights at these times are shorter than in midwinter, so your daily window for seeing the northern lights will also be shorter.

"We loved visiting in the fall for the opportunity to see the northern lights and for how few tourists there were," says U.S. News Travel digital producer Leilani Osmundson , who has visited Iceland in the fall. "Sometimes it felt like we had the whole country to ourselves!"

• New moons: Moonlight can make it harder to spot the light show if the aurora is already faint – so serious aurora chasers may want to plan their visit to coincide with a new moon.

During the rest of the year, Iceland experiences near-constant daylight, meaning there isn't enough darkness for the aurora borealis to appear. Put simply, if you visit in late spring or summer, you will not be able to see the lights, even if you go to the best viewing locations.

These are the most reliable resources for determining the likelihood of spotting the northern lights in the coming days:

• The Icelandic Meteorological Office: On the Icelandic Met Office's website , forecasts show the Kp index, which measures disturbances in Earth's magnetic field on a scale of zero to nine; the higher the number on the index, the stronger the aurora activity. The Met Office site also shows the cloud cover across Iceland, helping you determine whether you'll actually be able to see the lights.
• Iceland's Aurora Forecast: Iceland's Aurora Forecast , which is run by locals with expert knowledge of the aurora, offers a similar forecast on a slightly more user-friendly site.

Unfortunately, longer-range predictions (for example, weeks or months in advance) are less reliable. There are 27-day forecasts available, but take note that solar activity can occur rapidly and may not factor into such predictions. However, due to the sun's rotation cycle, if a strong aurora appears, it is considered more likely that the lights will appear again 27 days later, so this type of forecast may still be worth checking.

While it requires some extra planning, you can easily explore Iceland on your own. If you're considering this route for your trip, take these expert travel tips into account:

• Avoid chasing the lights: "Once you are in an area with clear skies, you just need to wait, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and hope for the best," Connolly says. "Driving around aimlessly rarely provides any benefits and isn't much fun."
• Manage your expectations: "The northern lights don't necessarily always appear to the naked eye as we see them in photos," Osmundson explains. "On our trip, they looked super green through the camera, but silvery and very faded to the naked eye."
• Consider a self-drive tour: Several tour companies offer customized itineraries for travelers who want to explore on their own.
• Opt for four-wheel drive: Rent a vehicle with four-wheel drive for safety and peace of mind on wintry roads.
• Heed road restrictions and conditions: Regardless of when you visit, don't go off the beaten track – off-roading is strictly illegal. You'll also want to check road conditions via the Icelandic government's official portal to avoid weather-related accidents.
• Consider travel insurance: An international travel insurance policy can provide car rental protections, medical care coverage and more.

The most basic rule for catching the northern lights is to go somewhere dark – and with Iceland's sparse population, there's no shortage of places that fit the bill. From fjords and glaciers to mountains and black sand beaches , these are some of the most notable places to see the northern lights in Iceland.

Jökulsárlón

This glacial lagoon is adorned with icebergs, which break off from the huge Vatnajökull glacier to the north. It's also populated by crowds of seals, making Jökulsárlón a stunning place to commune with nature and a formidable backdrop for the shimmering aurora. You can also watch the light show from Diamond Beach, a black sand beach right where the lake drains into the Atlantic.

Reynisfjara and other black sand beaches

Reynisfjara, near the southern village of Vik, is a popular tourist spot, and it won't be hard to see why once you take in the basalt columns dotted along this black sand beach. You might be able to find yourself a quiet corner either here or on another stretch of shoreline nearby, and you'll be surrounded by beautiful scenery while you wait for the light show.

Be on alert around the water – you must pay attention to your surroundings on the beaches, as so-called "sneaker waves" can cause injury or death. Consider stopping off at the spectacular 200-foot high Seljalandsfoss waterfall on the way; it's about 40 miles from Vik, on the main road from Reykjavik.

Snæfellsnes peninsula

About 130 miles northwest of Reykjavik, the Snæfellsnes peninsula centers around a huge volcano called Snæfellsjökull. There's plenty of impressive places to view the lights here – consider staking out a spot near the unusually pointy Kirkjufell mountain or on Djúpalónssandur beach, with its black sand and craggy rock formations. You can stay overnight in a number of villages in the area.

Reykjanes peninsula

Reykjanes has plenty of naturally beautiful backdrops for catching the lights. Kleifarvatn, a large and tranquil lake ringed by small mountains, sits about 20 miles south of Reykjavik, while another option is Krýsuvík, a geothermal area with hot springs south of the lake.

Thingvellir

This volcanic national park is located on the rift between two continental plates. About a 30-mile drive east of Reykjavik, Thingvellir – written as Þingvellir in Icelandic – offers varied scenery from volcanoes to lakes to famous Iceland waterfalls . Take note: As part of the Golden Circle tour route, Thingvellir is a popular spot for aurora viewing, so you may not be alone.

If you're planning a self-guided visit, book an Airbnb or hotel that caters to aurora spotters. Below is a sampling of hotels that offer special viewing locations and wake-up calls if the lights appear after you go to bed.

Hotel Rangá

However, guests in the two on-site hotels don't have to stress about this timing. Offering ultra-chic minimalist rooms, access to private lagoons and otherworldly views, The Retreat Hotel and Silica Hotel at the Blue Lagoon resort offer a true luxury experience, with prices to match. Despite the price, guests rave about the beauty of this hotel's location and its stylish design.

Hótel Húsafell

Located on a former farm in the Icelandic wilderness, this hotel says it gets an average of three aurora sightings per week in the winter months. Hótel Húsafell also offers a complimentary aurora wake-up service so you don't miss the show. Its location near the Langjökull glacier means stellar views during the day too. Recent visitors enjoyed the range of activities on offer around the hotel in addition to the restaurant, noting that although the menu options are limited, the food is divine.

Panorama Glass Lodge

There's no need to go out in the cold to see the northern lights when you're staying in an all-glass cabin. Hot tubs and heated floors at the Panorama Glass Lodge make the views over the rocky tundra all the more cozy. Guests have plenty of compliments for this lodge's scenic setting, as well as the luxury and comfort of its one-of-a-kind design.

Hótel Búdir

A rustic building now plays host to this stylish yet homey hotel on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with aurora wake-up calls; fine dining sourced from local purveyors; and stellar views that span glaciers, lava fields and the Atlantic. According to past guests, the old-timey charm and restaurant and bar are serious highlights at Hótel Búdir (also written Búðir).

Skálakot Manor Hotel

This luxury lodge is located on a horse farm in remote southern Iceland – the perfect place to spot the aurora. Northern lights tours with a guided expert may increase your chances of spotting the natural phenomenon, but remember: Seeing the northern lights is never a sure bet, and as such, tour operators have various policies to account for this. Below are some of the best tour options.

Yes, the northern lights can be visible from Reykjavík . "It's a myth that it's impossible to see them in the city," Connolly says. "If you find yourself stuck in Reykjavík each night, don't be disheartened – there are still plenty of places with wide-open views of the ocean and away from direct light, such as along the harbour downtown." Other local viewing spots include:

• Öskjuhlíð: This hill on the south side of Reykjavík offers decent views of the northern lights from the top. While you're up there, you can visit the spectacular glass-domed Perlan, a museum and restaurant offering an immersive aurora documentary in its unique planetarium, as well as spectacular views over Reykjavik. Although it's possible to see the lights from Perlan, the museum typically closes midevening, before the best viewing hours for the aurora.
• Seltjarnarnes peninsula: Located on the western edge of the city, this area's top viewing spot is the Grótta lighthouse, which provides scenic vistas of the night sky just far enough from the city lights.
• Mount Esja: If you have a car but want to stay close to the city, consider driving less than 20 miles out of toward snow-capped Mount Esja, which provides a splendid backdrop for the light show (but note that hiking on the mountain is not recommended during aurora season due to icy conditions).

Yes, though it's less likely as the Blue Lagoon typically closes in the late evening during the winter and early spring, which is often too early to see the northern lights.

Iceland's weather can be unpredictable. Because there's no easy way to plan around the changing forecasts, it's best to book a longer visit to the country. A two-day jaunt could easily be ruined by one patch of cloudy weather; if you stay on the island for a week, however, your chances of catching clear skies are much better.

Kerala rain: IMD sounds yellow alert in several districts

Thiruvananthapuram: With the onset of monsoon, isolated places across Kerala especially the northern districts will continue to receive thunderstorm in the coming days too. The India Meteorological Department sounded a yellow alert in 8 districts- Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday. These districts are likely to receive rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.

As per the alert issued at 1 pm on Thursday, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds will batter Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Thrissur within three hours.

IMD confirms cloudburst in Kalamassery The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday confirmed that the heavy rainfall event in Kalamassery near Kochi on May 28 was a cloudburst. The intense rainfall, lasting an hour, had caused significant flooding in many parts of Kalamassery, severely disrupting life in the industrial area of Kerala.

According to the IMD, the Automatic Weather Station at the Advanced Center for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR) on the CUSAT campus in Thrikkakara recorded 103 mm of rain in just one hour.

Another weather station in Kalamassery, about a kilometre away, reported 100 mm of rain during the same period from 9.30 AM to 10.30 AM. "Hence, we may consider this heavy rainfall event to be a cloud burst," the IMD said. Historically, cloudbursts have been believed to occur in the hilly regions of the Western Ghats, particularly during active monsoon periods.

However, due to a lack of sufficient observatories in the past, many such events went undetected and unclassified. The IMD noted a similar event on March 26, 2010, when 92 mm of rain was recorded in one hour by a Self-Recording Rain Gauge at the Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. Therefore, the recent cloudburst in Kalamassery is not the first in Kerala's history, it added. (With PTI inputs)
