Top 10 things to do in Kassandra, Halkidiki

With its beautiful blue coastline, numerous beaches and even more hotels, the leftmost peninsula of Halkidiki - Kassandra - is a desired holiday destination, especially by families. And while for some people the holiday is framed within chill out by the sea all day long and walks in the nearest village in the evening, others wonder how to diversify the vacation and see as much as possible. Check the ideas below to prepare your to-do list when in Kassandra.

1. Walk in the traditional village of Afitos

Afitos is probably the most photogenic village of Kassandra, with preserved old houses in the center and gorgeous sea views from above. Take a stroll in the narrow alleys and find the stone sculptures on the top of the village.

2. Spend a day at Crazyland Water Park

The Crazyland Water Park is located at Glarokavos beach, between Pefkohori and Chrousso . It is supposed to be the largest of its kind in Greece, with many inflatable facilities in the sea for both kids and adults (kids must be over 6 years of age). In the summer it works from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and offers flexible rates so you can enjoy a whole day of fun at the park and its adjoining beach bar.

3. Do a boat trip to Sithonia

Boat trips to Sithonia depart from the harbor of Pefkochori . The usual tour includes the uninhabited island of Kelifos between the two peninsulas and walk in the charming village of Neos Marmaras. This will not show you Sithonia in details but it is a good option to enjoy the amazing blue sea because the ship has a few stops especially for swimming.

4. Drive to the southernmost area of Kassandra

The southernmost area of Kassandra is the least developed and it has no villages, only a few scattered hotels. With its green hills, thick olive groves and isolated pebbly coves, it is much different from the rest of the peninsula. The asphalt road ends in front of the small church of Agios Nikolaos , in an area called Xina. This area is very good for snorkeling with its rich sea life.

5. Sunbath at Possidi Sandspit

Possidi is a large sandspit close to the homonymous village. The sandspit stretches for hundreds of meters ahead in the sea and resembles a giant tongue, though its shape varies depending on the sea level and the wind. In calm weather the endless blue water around will mesmerize you.

6. See the Potidea Canal

The Potidea canal is at the beginning of Kassandra and the village of Nea Potidea . It separates the peninsula from mainland, and above it passes the bridge which connects them. From the bridge yon see both the east and west coast of Kassandra, and along the canal are the ruins of Ancient Potidea - a Corinthian colony founded around 600 BC.

7. Visit the Agiasma of St. Paul in Nea Fokea

The Byzantine Tower of Apostle Paul rises up just above the small harbor of Nea Fokea . It is 17 meters high and dates back to 15 century. But a very interesting place to visit very close to the tower is the Agiasma of St. Paul which is accessible via underground tunnel carved into the rocks. The tunnel has a length of about 20 meters and ends in a small sanctuary with water spring and icons. According to the legends, Apostle Paul used to baptize the new Christians here.

8. Have a meal in Kassandrino

Kassandrino is a quiet inland village in the middle of the peninsula, almost untouched by tourism except for the two tavernas where tourists sometimes drop by. Meat lovers would appraise the slow cooked meat and the simple but very delicious food served there. Suitable also for a walk in cloudy or rainy days.

9. Try snorkeling

Kassandra boasts transparent blue waters around its shores and sea life is clearly visible almost everywhere. There are a few spots, however, where you can enjoy snorkeling at its best because they are away from villages and people in general. One of them is the rocky section between Sani and Elani on the west coast, and another one is on the southernmost coast, around Valitsa bay and the area of Xina.

10. Enjoy a coffee or dinner at Sani Marina

The luxury five-star hotel resort Sani possesses a first-class harbor for yachts, surrounded by fancy restaurants, cafes and expensive boutique shops. The marina is the ultimate place on Kassandra for romantic evening walks and dining in refine atmosphere. Тhe place is not cheap but a cup of cappuccino or dessert at the cafe-patisserie with yachts view is an affordable compromise.

Discoveries on the roudtrip of Kassandra

For this roundtrip a motor vehicle is required. The tour on this route begins in Kallithea and ends back there but can be launched optionally also from nearly every village on this ring-road on this peninsula. The tour has a distance of about 85. It keeps track of most coastal cities of Kassandra. It is recommented to consider detours and several stops by discovering some of the many impressive places, plateaus with an amazing panoramic view, old buildings, ancient sites, natural harbours, impressive rock-formations and natural areas of the peninusla.  Beside many other attractions you have the possibility to visit in Nea Skioni the historic seaside chapel from the 16th century.

This tour starts on the mainroad of the coastal village Skala Fourkas and leads uphill to the highest plateau before heading to the traditional village of 'old' Fourka. During this hike you get rewarded with an amazing view over the valley of Fourka, the mountain-village Kalandra until the cape of Posidi

ROUTE FROM KASSANDRIA TO THE RELICTS OF THE EARLY-CHRISTIAN BASILICA 'SOLINA'

Discoveries on the trip Kassandria - Solina

The Route starts in Kassandria, central of the peninsula of Kassandra to the archeological site of the early-Chirstian basilica in the area 'Solina'. The basilica was built in the early 5th century. It is assumed that the basilica, including the cemetery, belonged to an neighboring ancient settlement. The floor of the former building is still covered with well-preserved mosaics. Along this hike in June/July you will see endless fields of sunflowers.

ROUTE CAPE OF KANNISTRO – ST. NIKOLAOS

This  difficult route will lead through the cape-area of the peninsula Kassandra. On this tour you discover the the beauty of untouched nature and crest hills which award you with a fantastic view over the cliffs of the cape including the natural-harbor of St. Nicolaos. During this trip you may visit the unique, little church of St. Nikolaos which was re-built of the stones of an ancient temple. Some elements of this sanctuary can still be seen in the walls.

A beautiful path into the center of the peninsula Kassandra. The tour starts in Kassandria and leads through the inland to the old mountain village Fourka. During this interesting tour you pass the 'Lekani'-area ('basin'-area), known as the place with famous natural ice-cold water from the fountain of Epanochori near the chapel of St. Athanasius (built 1930). Close to Fourka you can visit a very old church to admire its frescoes (Virgin Malfroutsa).

Long Hike on the ridge of the peninsula on a good country road. Walking on the 'roof' of Kassandra, watching all villages, settlements and coastal areas from obove, this tour is lined up with impressive paormaic views. On the left you will see Athos with its holy mountain. On the right you can admire the Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

ROUTE HANIOTI – NEA SKIONI

Discoveries on the trip Hanioti - Nea Skioni

The route starts in the coastal village Hanioti and is directed into the peninsula. During the walk  you get on a plateau from which you have a fantastic view above New Skioni and the Thermaikos Gulf. The trip also covers 4 churches worth seeing and leads into Tsaprani. This village was located in the mountains but finally abandoned in the year 1930. After passing the inland you reach the beatiful fishing-village on the opposite site of the peninsula. 

ROUTE KRIOPIGI – KASSANDRINO

- Hike towards inland to a beautiful mountain-village including the visit of an old church with murals - Difficulty-level: simple - Distance: about 5.1km - Altitude: 200m

This route starts in Kriopigi and leads through a beautiful forest direct towards inland to the small and picturesque village of Kassandrino. On the destination you also have the opportunity to visit the church of the Holy Trinity with an old catacomb and beautiful murals.

ROUTE KALANDRA-POSIDI-LIGHTHOUSE

- Hike through nice landscape to a lighthouse & an archeological site - Difficulty-level: simple - Distance: about 4.8km - Durance: approx. 2h - Altitude: 150m

This route starts in the traditional inland village Kalandra and leads through a forest road to elevated places from where you have a impressivle view over the coastal area and the cape. The tour continues through the Kalandra-related seaside-village Posidi and ends at the lighthouse on this cape. It's highly recommended to visit the Sanctuary of Poseidon and to be equipped with a camera.

ROUTE SANI, WETLANDS OF NEA FOKEA - GERANI (roundtrip)

- Hike through nature reserve - Difficulty-level: - Distance: about 10km - Durance: Approx. 3h - Altitude: 22m

Discoveries on the hike Sani - Welnads of Nea Fokea - Gerani

Beginning in the port area of Sani, this route passes through a green forest and an impressive wetland of the nature protection area (Natura 2000) of the region 'Nea Fokea'. This nature protection area contains beside a wide  forest also several lakes and is home for over 50 percent of all native bird-species in Greece are indigenous. The tour continues to the archeological site of 'Gerani'. A impressive excavation of pre-hellenic ruins and tombs located directly on a beatiful beach area.  and heads back to the point of departure. (about 3 h, altitude 22m)

ROUTE SIVIRI – STEFANI – KYPSA- PORT SANI

- Hike through a beautiful landscape along the coast including teh visit of the ruins of an ancient roman property - Difficulty-level: normal - Distance: about 9.5km - Altitude: 60m

This route starts in the coastal village Siviri, heading on the western coast north into the Sani Resort to the Port of Sani Village. The landscape on this path is beautifully wooded and leads to several places with an amazing view. The archeological landmark on this trip is the archaeological excavation of an ancient roman property in the area of great Kalypsa.
