Brittney Liu

Written by Brittney Liu

If you’ve ever considered visiting the Netherlands, you know that the best time to visit is during the tulip season, which occurs from mid-March to mid-May. During this time, Amsterdam tulip fields are in full bloom and majestic. The Keukenhof Gardens is one of the best places to see these lovely spring flowers.

Keukenhof Gardens is located in the town of Lisse, approximately thirty minutes from the center of Amsterdam . It is one of the world’s largest flower gardens, with over 7 million flower bulbs planted yearly. The vibrant European garden opened to the public in 1950 and quickly became an international sensation.

The world-famous garden welcomes over a million visitors annually to its amazing and colorful tulip festival. Any visitors planning to head to Amsterdam in the springtime should definitely add this place to their list of must-sees!

Since the Keukenhof tulip gardens are not in a huge city, some preparation goes into visiting. We’ve prepared this ultimate guide so that you are equipped with everything you need to know about the gardens, where to stay , how to get there, and everything in between!

About Keukenhof Gardens

A rainbow of tulip flowers at the entrance of Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands

Keukenhof (“Kitchen Garden” in English) is the most famous tulip garden in the Netherlands and one of the world’s largest flower gardens. It’s located in South Holland , and the entire Keukenhof Park spans 32 hectares filled with winding paths, beautiful flower fields, and indoor flower shows.

Keukenhof is renowned for its stunning displays of tulips and other spring flowers. As an international showcase for the Dutch floricultural sector, it highlights the country’s expertise in flower bulbs and garden design, attracting millions of visitors annually.

The park is divided into several gardens, indoor exhibits, and multiple other features. In addition to the wonderful blooms, visitors can enjoy a playground , photo spots, boat rides, and food trucks. At the main entrance, you can buy fresh flowers and souvenirs to take back home.

Admire the seemingly endless tulip fields with trails of pink, yellow, white, orange, and ombre flower bulbs as you wander through the fields. Other spring flowers at Keukenhof include daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.

Each spring, the Things to Do in Amsterdam from a Local always involve tulips, and there’s no better place in the world to do it than Keukenhof.

Key Visitor Information

  • Best Time to Visit: Flowering at Keukenhof parallels that in nature. Crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips bloom early in the season, and larger tulips and other flowers bloom later in the season.
  • Quiet Times: It is less busy before 10:30 AM and after 4:00 PM. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are generally less crowded compared to other days of the week.
  • Photography Tips: The morning and evening light provides excellent opportunities for taking beautiful photographs.
  • General Experience: Keukenhof’s pavilions feature captivating flower shows from the first to the last day of the season.
  • Website: For more information, visit the official Keukenhof website .

To visit Keukenhof Gardens , you will need to purchase an entrance ticket. Keukenhof tickets are slightly cheaper when booking online versus at the on-site ticket office, so keep that in mind. Children 3 and younger are free, while groups with more than 20 people can get a reduced-rate group ticket.

If you plan to spend a while in the Amsterdam area , you can purchase a Keukenhof annual pass, which is valid all season and includes parking.

Flower Fields and Gardens

Bright pink tulips in Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands

To the right of the main entrance is the main flower field, where you can see the tulips grown to be harvested and sold. The sea of flowers at the tulip farm seems to go on forever. There are a few observation decks where you can get a closer look. They also make for awesome photo spots to get the lovely tulip fields in the background.

The surprising inspirational gardens were my favorite part of visiting Keukenhof. Each garden has a specific theme; there’s something new every year. Themes include a romance garden, tropical garden, tea garden, and more. Each themed garden offers a ton of photo opportunities.

Some gardens don’t only focus on tulips. For example, the Japanese country garden includes four rotating pavilions of flowers. There is also a traditional English landscape garden with long, winding paths.

Flower Exhibits

Indoor Flower Exhibit at Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands

Five main indoor flower show exhibit areas are located at each park corner. Each exhibition features a different theme and is created by flower artists from all over the Netherlands. Since spring is chilly in the Netherlands, the indoor flower shows are also a great place to get some warmth.

The Orange Nassau Pavillion is known for having some of the most intricate and amazing flower shows. Flower shows last only a certain amount of time, some less than a week, before being changed to a different show. It’s when art meets flowers, and many flowers, such as roses, anthuriums, and orchids, are displayed.

Windmill & Boat Ride

View of the boat tour from the top of the windmill in Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands

Two other fun parts of visiting Keukenhof were the windmill and boat ride. They are right next to each other, so you can buy a ticket for the next boat trip and trek up the stairs of the old windmill while you wait. The boat trip is an extra fee and is not included in the price of the entrance ticket.

The windmill features a winding staircase that you can take to the top. Once you’re at the top, you’re rewarded with 360° unobstructed views of the park and the flower fields. It’s certainly worth the trek up and down the creaking wooden stairs.

In my opinion, the boat ride is an absolute must. It takes about 45 minutes, and each boat can accommodate around 20 people. Everyone is given an audio guide to learn about the gardens in their language.

While you hear about the history of Keukenhof Gardens, you take a peaceful ride around the tulip fields. It was super enjoyable, even for my friend’s toddler.

How to Get to Keukenhof Gardens

Bus 858 sign directing to Keukenhof Gardens from Schiphol Airport

Keukenhof Gardens is accessible by car, bus, and bike. The best way to travel to Keukenhof from Amsterdam is by taking the Keukenhof bus. These buses run regularly from several locations, including Amsterdam, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Haarlem, and Leiden, providing convenient access to the gardens.

If you plan to visit more than just Amsterdam, you’ll probably want to rent a car in the Netherlands. The Keukenhof Express bus goes directly from all major cities and places nearby, including Amsterdam, Schipol Airport, Haarlem, and Leiden .

Combination bus and entrance tickets are available to purchase online . For an even more eco-friendly option, you can arrive at Keukenhof by bike. Bike racks are available near the park’s main entrance.

Keukenhof Gardens Tours

Iconic Keukenhof windmill surrounded by visitors, tulips in bloom, Lisse, Netherlands

While Keukenhof offers guided tours with a park guide, it’s geared toward larger groups of 20-25 people and comes with a hefty price tag, especially if your group is small. Tour groups are the way to go if you want to explore Keukenhof most conveniently.

Many tours are offered to Keukenhof, which range from Keukenhof only to a whole Holland extravaganza. Tour operators can give you a lot of insight into the region. Here are just a few great options:

  • Keukenhof Gardens and Tulip Experience – This tour includes a 3.5-hour guided tour of the Keukenhof Gardens and admission into the Tulip Experience Amsterdam. At the Tulip Experience, you can learn all about the history of tulips in Holland, as well as the breeding and growing process of the iconic flower. There is also an optional canal cruise offered for an additional fee.
  • Keukenhof & Windmill Village Guided Tour —This full-day trip includes a stop at Keukenhof and a tour of the historic Zaanse Schans windmill village. Other fun highlights include a clog-making demonstration, a cheese-making demonstration, and a cheese tasting.
  • Holland Spectacle – This tour takes you to Keukenhof and the beautiful canal village of Giethoorn. Giethoorn is one of the most beautiful European towns I’ve ever seen, and I highly recommend visiting. This tour includes a canal boat ride through Giethoorn and a three-hour tour of the Keukenhof Gardens.

Other Tulip Gardens in The Netherlands

Aerial View of Colorful Tulip Fields in the Netherlands

Blooming tulip fields can be found all around North and South Holland. On the road, you’ll pass by many private tulip fields that may not be open to visitors. Don’t worry, though! Below are some amazing places to visit and things to experience to ensure you’ll get your fix of tulips while in the Netherlands.

Annual Flower Parade

Tulip Statue at the Annual Flowers Parade in Haarlem

While this isn’t a tulip garden, it’s a fun way to celebrate Dutch tulips and the spring season. The flower parade follows a 26-mile route through Bollenstreek (the flower bulb region) from Noordwijk to Haarlem with a pass by Keukenhof. Ensure to arrive early, as the road is closed at 11:00 am.

Keukenhof Castle

The Keukenhof Gardens are located on the estate of Keukenhof Castle, which is also a main attraction. Unlike the Keukenhof Gardens, the Keukenhof Castle is open year-round and is free to visit.

It also has its gardens, which date back to the 1850s and are free to visit. Other attractions at the Keukenhof Castle include a petting zoo, a sculpture garden , and a restaurant.

De Tulperij

Aerial View of the Tulip Fields in Voorhout, Holland

De Tulperij is located in the small village of Voorhout, just a few minutes from Keukenhof Gardens. This family-run tulip farm has some of the most beautiful flower fields.

The farm is open daily during the tulip season. The husband and wife duo offer guided tours of their tulip fields for an affordable price. After your tour, you can enjoy coffee or tea (and a stroopwafel) in the beautiful flower greenhouse.

Hanneke’s Pluktuin

Located in Flevoland, Hanneke’s Pluktuin is a free flower field where you can pick your own flowers. They grow various flowers, including sunflowers , dahlias, marigolds, and baby’s breath. The pick-your-own tulip field opens in mid-April. The farm also has a beautiful greenhouse to relax and enjoy tea.

Tulip Island

Zeewolde Tulip Island

Tulip Island is a man-made island located in Zeewolde. The flower-shaped island is quite a sight to see, especially in the spring! During tulip season, the island is covered with over 120,000 bulbs. Think of it as the Netherlands’ version of Dubai’s palm tree-shaped island.

What flower is Keukenhof in the Netherlands best known for?

Over one million people visit Keukenhof annually to admire the amazing tulip fields and gardens. Annually, over 7 million flower bulbs are planted in the tulip fields.

What is the best time to visit Keukenhof Gardens?

Keukenhof canal cruise with views of lush flower gardens and vibrant spring blooms

While you can’t predict the exact time the tulips bloom each year, there are early tulips that bloom at the start of the season, along with other flowers like daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses. Larger tulips tend to bloom toward the end of spring.

Where are the best places to see tulips in Amsterdam?

Unfortunately, large tulip gardens are not found in Amsterdam. Keukenhof is the best place to see amazing tulip gardens near Amsterdam. It is easily accessible from Amsterdam by bus, car, or guided tour.

Keukenhof Gardens – Tulip and Flower Park in Holland (2025 Guide)

keukenhof flower garden

Keukenhof is the world famous tulip and flower garden park – one of the most popular tourist attractions in The Netherlands, normally attracting 1.5 million visitors during springtime.

Keukenhof is the one of the largest flower gardens in the world, set in 32 hectares. The Netherlands is well-known as a leading tulip and flower producer and the gardens help showcase this reputation.

The site originates back to the 15th century, home of the Slot Teylingen (Teylingen Castle) where fruit, herbs and vegetables were grown at the Keukenduin (kitchen dunes) by Countess Jacoba van Beieren (1401-1436). The name Keukenhof literally means kitchen gardens.

The Keukenhof Castle was built in 1641 and the estate covered an impressive 200 hectares.

In 1857 the castle gardens were completely redesigned in English style by landscape architect Jan David Zocher and son Louis Paul Zocher, who also designed Vondelpark in Amsterdam.

In 1949 a group of 20 Dutch flower bulb growers came together with a plan to use the estate to exhibit spring-flowering bulbs. Subsequently, Keukenhof opened its doors for the first time in 1950 and received 236,000 visitors in its first year.

keukenhof tour

Where is Keukenhof?

The gardens are located in the small town of Lisse about 26km south-west of Amsterdam . This is in the Bollenstreek (flower bulb-growing) area of the country in the South-Holland province .

The following map shows the location of the Keukenhof Gardens with respect to Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Haarlem and Leiden.

Visiting the Keukenhof Gardens

The Keukenhof Gardens are beautifully landscaped and contain some 7 million flowers – all hand planted by 40 gardeners the previous October-December. Each year brings a new design layout to the park.

There are an amazing 800 varieties of tulips including some from the 16th and 17th century – when Holland went through its ‘tulip mania’ where prices for tulip bulbs reached incredible levels.

The garden also has 2,500 trees with over 100 different species. There are over 100 varieties of cherry blossoms as well.

If you are in Amsterdam or visiting the Netherlands during the spring then you really should consider making a day excursion out to the Keukenhof Gardens park.

When is Keukenhof Open in 2025?

Note, it is a springtime flower park and is only open for 2 months. The 76th edition is running from 20 March to 11 May 2025.

keukenhof entrance

Keukenhof is very popular with both tourists and locals and it welcomed nearly 1.4 million visitors in 2023. About 80% of visitors do come from abroad with the top visitor countries being Germany, USA, France and UK.

It is therefore essential to book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

When is the best time to visit Keukenhof?

Many say late April is a great time to visit the gardens. At the beginning of the season you will see early bloomers such as daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses and some tulip varieties. Later in the season the larger tulips come into bloom and the trees are beautifully green.

The park is less busy if visiting before 1030 or after 1600; the least busy days are Monday to Wednesday. If sunny, the light is at its very best in the early morning or just before evening closing time.

keukenhof gardens

Flower Parade (2025)

The annual Bollenstreek Flower Parade (Bloemencorso) running from Noordwijk to Haarlem is expected on Saturday 12 April 2025.

Keukenhof Activities

For a different perspective, there are a number of Keukenhof-themed activities you can do.

You could take a bike tour or a Landrover tour (both 2.5 hours) of the tulip fields in the Keukenhof area.

There is a self-drive tour (includes GPS navigation) in a 2-seater Renault Twizzy on a 20km fixed route around the tulip fields.

For an aerial view of the tulip fields on some limited dates, consider a tulip field helicopter flight .

Park layout and facilities

The park has large indoor exhibition pavilions named after the Dutch royals – Willem-Alexander, Oranje-Nassau, Wilhelmina, Juliana, Beatrix and Irene.

willem-alexander pavilion

The pavilions normally host colourful floral displays which change on a weekly basis. For example, the Beatrix pavilion is home to orchid and anthurium; the Oranje Nassau pavilion hosts flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums and daffodils.

beatrix pavilion keukenhof

There are 15km of walking paths around the gardens and you can easily spend the whole day exploring the park, particularly if the weather is pleasant. You can also cycle around the surrounding fields with various cycle routes ranging from 5 to 25km.

There is a traditional 19th century Dutch windmill, lots of water features and an electric boat ride (45 minutes) past the adjacent bulb fields.

The park also contains a collection of around 100 outdoor artwork sculptures in a wide variety of styles.

There is a special park guide book available for purchase for €7. You can pick up a free Keukenhof map near the entrance to guide you around the park which looks like this:

There are café/restaurant facilities at each pavilion with outdoor terrace seating. There are many benches placed throughout the park where you can sit down and take a break. Free WiFi is available.

For children there is a small petting farm (including goats, rabbits and peacocks), a Miffy (Nijntje) playground, maze and treasure hunt activity.

The benefits of the shuttle service is that you can book a specific time-slot, unlike public transport. And the coaches are probably a bit more comfortable than the public transport buses.

An Insider’s Guide on How to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe 2024

Last Updated on 26th June 2024 by Sophie Nadeau

This post may contain affiliate links. Please check out my  privacy policy  and  disclosure  for more information.

Every year, the Garden of Europe is open to the public for a blissful period of just eight weeks. Easy to reach as a day trip from Amsterdam, Leiden , or Haarlem , Keukenhof is a celebration of colour and all things floral-related. Brimming with flowers like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, here’s your guide on how to visit Keukenhof, including insider tips and things to know before you go!

2024 opening times: Keukenhof Tulip Gardens are open from 21 March 2024 until 12 May 2024 . 2024 is a particularly special year for the gardens because it’s the 75th anniversary of the gardens. Buy your ticket in advance!

Here's how to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe as a day trip from Amsterdam in Holland, the Netherlands and where to find Dutch tulips near Lisse

Editor’s note:  Though there are a multitude of things to know before visiting Keukenhof, if you’re simply looking for which ticket to purchase, then be sure to buy this ticket in advance and save some money.

As of 2024, Keukenhof have introduced a system where you can only enter the gardens at a predetermined time slot. This is in a bid to reduce visitor numbers and so you should be precise with your planning (particularly if you want to visit during peak bloom).

You should also note that it’s not uncommon for tickets to completely run out, particularly during the weekend. Otherwise, if you’re looking to see the gardens as a day trip from Amsterdam, then buy this ticket with transfer option .

I personally visited Keukenhof (aka one of the largest gardens in the world) in early April 2019 and so this honest review is from that visit!

To set the scene: it was simply a glorious day and I’d spent the night before at a hotel in the nearby town of Lisse. In fact, I enjoyed my time so much that I am returning once more to the gardens in 2024 and can’t wait for my forthcoming trip!

As soon as I walked in the front gate (there’s also an extra entrance towards the back of the garden), I knew I was somewhere special. After all, it’s not every day that you’re greeted with the sight of thousands of flowers!

From the traditional Dutch tulip to sweet-scented hyacinths, the sunny daffodil, the rarer amaryllis and even a pavilion that simply houses the widest collection of orchid varieties you’re ever likely to admire, there’s something for every botanist enthusiast when it comes to Keukenhof.

Contrary to what you may well think, Keukenhof is not located in the middle of nowhere. Instead, the world-famous flower gardens can be found on the fringes of Lisse, a small town in the Dutch countryside that doesn’t even have a train station! Instead, the little settlement is served by a bus station and can easily be reached from the cities of Leiden or Haarlem.

The gardens can be found within the region of  Duin- en Bollenstreek , in South Holland. The name is literally translated as ‘dune and bulb’ region on account of the stunning dunes such as those of Scheveningen and the impressive tulip fields such as those surrounding Lisse. Other villages of note in the Bulb Region include Bennebroek, Heemstede, and Noordwijk.

This area of the Netherlands rose to prominence since the peaty soil in the area is great for growing flowers, and in particular, the tulip. Indeed, some of this part of the Netherlands was reclaimed from the sea by way of polders.

Once upon a time, the flat expansive landscape was once part of the seabed. Through water drainage and flood control methods, the water was removed, leaving behind rich and fertile soil.

Though the tulip is as synonymous to the Netherlands today as cheese, clogs, stroopwafels or the colour orange, it wasn’t always this way. Something you may well not have known before is that tulips are  not  native to the Netherlands.

They were actually first imported from Turkey during the 16th-century in a craze that came to be known as ‘tulip mania’. At this time, a tulip could cost as much as a house, even in a city as expensive as Amsterdam!

For more information about the history of tulips in the Netherlands today, you might consider a visit to the tulip museum in Amsterdam.

The name Keukenhof  itself means ‘kitchen garden’ and the name derives from the fact that, during the Dutch Golden Age, the area was used to grow herbs for Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut who resided in the nearby Hainaut Castle.

Prior to this period, the area was used as 15th-century hunting grounds. Now, the castle still stands and is known as ‘Keukenhof Castle’.

An Insider's Guide on How to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe in the Netherlands

The current garden was established in 1949. The then-mayor of Lisse wanted to create a space where growers from the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond would be able to display and exhibit their wares (including hybrids) and even further the export of flowers from the Netherlands. Now, the Netherlands is the largest exporter of flowers in the world!

Every year, the Keukenhof gardens have a theme. Past themes have included Holland (in 2014) , Romance and Flowers (in 2018) , and Van Gogh (in 2015).  Today, each year over a million people visit the garden, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful tulips, floral displays, and flower-themed attractions.

In 2019, the theme was ‘flower power,’ with a focus on how flowers can inspire and connect people. Many of the displays are 1970s-inspired and so you can expect to spy bright colours and hippie-themed exhibits.

The Keukenhof Gardens’ theme for 2021 was ‘A World of Colours.’ This was originally meant to be the theme for Keukenhof in 2020. However, the events of 2020 meant that Keukenhof was closed to the public and the garden could only be visited virtually.

As such, the organisers decided to keep the theme ‘A World of Colours’ for Keukenhof 2021. The Keukenhof Theme for 2022 was flower classics. There was no specific theme for 2023 and when I visited, it felt like they had recycled a number of different displays from previous visits (and I even recognised a number of decorations from previous years).

An Insider's Guide on How to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe in the Netherlands

Since its opening, Keukenhof has seen close to a staggering 50 million visitors (that’s around the population of Colombia or South Korea)!

Other equally fascinating statistics about Keukenhof include that around 75% of the gardens’ visitors come from outside the Netherlands, with the majority from nearby countries such as France, Germany, and the UK.

The millions of bulbs in the gardens have actually been supplied for free by around 100 bulb growers. For more information on specific flower varieties and about the grower, there are little signs denoting the name of the plant, as well as the supplier.

Finally, there are several dozen full-time gardeners who work at Keukenhof all year ’round. The garden is not just about tulips (though there are over 800 tulip varieties on display!) , but also includes several internationally-inspired gardens, including an English themed garden, a Japanese garden, a natural garden, and a meadow.

Highlights of the Keukenhof Gardens (and places you shouldn’t miss)

Thanks to an impressive 32 hectares of surface area and over 7 million tulip bulbs (yes, you read that last Keukenhof fact correctly!) , there’s no shortage of things to do in Keukenhof.

And once at the gardens, it soon becomes clear why this site is one of the most visited attractions in the Netherlands. After all, between a windmill, meandering whisper boat rides, plenty of covered pavilions, and even a maze, there’s something for everyone.

Located on an outer extremity of the park, if you’ve never explored inside of a Dutch windmill before, then now is your chance. The Keukenhof windmill dates back to 1892, though it was only installed in Keukenhof park in 1957.

Free to visit, the windmill overlooks the stunning Lisse tulip fields and can be climbed. Clamber up the steep steps to the top viewing platform and you’ll be rewarded with bird’s eye views of the Keukenhof Gardens sprawling out in front of you… When there’s enough wind, the sails will turn, making the windmill even more beautiful.

Keukenhof Molen (Windmill)

In 2024, the Flower Parade is on the 20th of April. Highlights of this one-day annual event include a floats made of flowers passing by from Noordwijk and ending in Lisse. Though you can enjoy the parade from within the Keukenhof gardens, the floats can be enjoyed for free in any of the villages en route.

What was particularly pleasant about our day trip to Keukenhof was our ability to take as many photos as we liked without anyone really caring/ noticing. After all, everyone was visiting the gardens because they loved flowers and almost everyone I could see was documenting the day through at least a snap or two.

Throughout the park, there are several ‘Insta-worthy’ displays. Some of my favourites included a wedding dress covered in flowers, as well as a ‘love’ sign. Each year, the Instagram friendly displays change, meaning that there’s something new to see on each new visit!

For an extra fee (in 2024, it’s €10) , it’s possible to take a forty-five-minute boat tour around the tulip fields surrounding Lisse. While you can purchase tickets in advance, it’s also possible to buy Keukenhof boat tickets in the little chalet beside the windmill.

In 2023, I took the boat tour. Unfortunately, the Whisper Boat tour is one aspect of visiting Keukenhof that I don’t really recommend. Since the boat is so low in the water, it’s hard to see the surrounding fields on the tour.

Furthermore, the audio commentary starts and stops rather abruptly and is not as informative as other boat tours I’ve been lucky enough to take in the Netherlands.

All in all, it wasn’t very engaging nor interesting and so I’m not sure that it’s really worth the money! That being said, if you do want to take the boat tour, then be sure to buy your tickets as soon as you enter the park as boat tours can fill up quite fast due to the limited number of places throughout the day.

Take a Lisse/ Keukenhof Whisper Boat Tour

Also of note and close to the Keukenhof Gardens is the Keukenhof Castle. Constructed in 1642, the castle requires a different entrance ticket than the gardens of Keukenhof and the tickets cannot be purchased as a combined entrance ticket. Open on a daily basis, you can find more information about visiting on the official Kasteel Keukenhof website .

Perhaps what surprised me the most about our visit to the gardens is that there was a small maze close to the Willem-Alexander Pavilion (i.e. the indoor space where there’s a café and hundreds of tulips on display).

This small maze is easy to get lost in, though make it to the end and you’ll find a lookout point from which to enjoy the Keukenhof Gardens from above. The maze was originally opened to the public in 1999 and was designed for children, but is fun for all ages!

Situated on the lake closest to Wilhelmina (this body of water is also referred to as the Keukenhof Pond), where sparkling fountains dance across the surface and a mini island is populated solely by swans and ducks, you’ll get the chance to walk across the lake on little wooden platforms and snap photos en route.

Pavilions at Keukenhof

The gardens are divided into several distinct areas, each with their own layout and vibe. Dotted across Keukenhof, you’ll also soon discover that there are plenty of Pavilions with toilet facilities, cafés to grab a bite to eat, and shops where you can buy Keukenhof-themed merchandise. Most of the pavilions also have cut flower

The star of the show when it comes to the pavilions of Keukenhof is that of Willem-Alexander. Filled with several Instagram photo spots, as well as varieties of every tulip you can imagine (from frilly specimens to pastel-hued plants), this pavilion can be found in the centre of the garden and has toilet facilities, a restaurant, and a shop.

Situated at the far end of the park, close to the Keukenhof pond and not far from the extra Entrance, Wilhelmina is one of the only pavilions where there are no flower displays.

Instead, this pavilion has a shop, food facilities, and washrooms. Close to this Pavilion you’ll also find a small hut with the name ‘Keukenhof’ emblazed in bold lettering. This is the original entrance to the park from decades ago.

This pavilion is in the South of the park, just above the Irene pavilion. Boasting an exhibition featuring tulip bulbs and an exhibition about the history of tulip mania, this chalet is the ultimate must-see for any history buff.

Some of the interactive displays within the pavilion include the chance to christen your own tulip bulb and search for your name int eh tulips. Surrounding the pavilion you’ll soon discover meandering waterways and delicate flower displays. This pavilion has a shop, café, and toilets.

For lovers of orchids, Beatrix pavilion, in the Northern-most corner of the park, not far from the entrance extra, is the ultimate can’t miss Keukenhof attraction.

Filled with all kinds of orchid varieties (including some particularly unusual colours), there are cut displays, and even the chance to purchase some orchids, brolemiads, and anthuriums for yourself. Amenities of the Beatrix facility include a restaurant, toilets, and a shop.

You’ll know you’re in the right place when you spy the giant fountain in front of the pavilion. Much like Wilhelmina, this pavilion has no florally-inspired displays or exhibits. Instead, head here and you can expect to find a shop, restaurant, and toilet facilities.

Close to the park entrance and not far from the Keukenhof maze, this is where Keukenhof’s current year theme can truly be enjoyed. Filled with flower shows, displays, and even a miniature ‘Keukenhof indoor theatre’ where regular live shows take place, amenities of this pavilion include a shop, restaurant, and toilets.

Oranje Nassau pavilion at Keukenhof

As you may well have gathered from the fact that Keukenhof is open for just eight weeks a year, the tulips in the Netherlands don’t bloom all year round. The bulbs tend to bloom from the end of March until the beginning of May, meaning that the best time to enjoy the tulips is in April.

In 2024, Keukenhof Tulip Gardens open on 21 March 2024 and will be open until 12 May 2024 . 2024 marks the 75th opening of the gardens at Keukenhof. For this special anniversary, flower themed borders have been created!

The gardens can get very busy, especially so during the weekend, school holidays, and later on in the day. If you want to make the most of your time, then you should aim to get to Keukenhof for when it opens.

This is at 8 AM so set your alarm and grab a coffee. To make the most of your time in the garden, you’ll need to set aside at least three hours, as well as time for transportation.

Visit at the weekend, particularly during the Parade Day, and you can expect to find intense crowds and long line ups (even for things like using the bathroom or entering the various flower pavillions).

We visited for opening on a Friday morning and even by 10 AM, the crowds were already swelling and queues were forming for some of the more popular attractions within Keukenhof (like the windmill and whisper boat tours).

Purple and red tulips with yellow daffodils in Keukenhof

There are a few themed gardens scattered across Keukenhof, all with their own mission and theme. Here’s a brief summary of the more popular ‘inspiration’ gardens you’ll find at the largest garden in Europe:

Reconnection Garden: Made with sustainable materials.

Tropical Beach Garden: As its name suggests, this garden is filled with palm trees, sand, a boat (which is planted with flowers), and even some hammocks.

Green tea garden: This beautiful set of borders is filled with a whole assortment of herbs such as  mint, lemon balm, camomile, chocolate mint, aniseed. Nearby, you can have a cup of tea in the greenhouse.

Red Romance Garden: This spot of Keukenhof is dedicated to all things romantic love. There are sculptures and flowers which symbolise love.

If I could just give you one Keukenhof travel tip, it would be to purchase your entrance ticket ahead of time. This one tip will save you some money as it’s more expensive to buy tickets in person at Keukenhof.

Upon arrival, be sure to pick up one of the free maps to help you navigate the extensive park! These fold out guides show all the facilities, including toilets, food spots, and each of the flower pavilions.

There’s free WiFi, though you can still easily get lost and it’s easy to miss even the most impressive of the Keukenhof attractions. Another amenity worth noting is the luggage storage facility in the form of luggage lockers, which is free. Do bear in mind that lockers are in limited supply and might not accommodate your size of suitcase.

An Insider's Guide on How to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe in the Netherlands

Of course, you can buy food on site. However, soft drinks and hot meals are particularly expensive. While coffees are around €4 (which is a pretty standard price for the Netherlands) , a burger with fries will set you back around €10 while soft drinks will set you back closer to €4. Please note that food at Keukenhof can only be bought using a credit/ debit card- cash is not accepted.

Luckily, there are plenty of benches dotted around the park that are perfect for sitting down to have a picnic. If you forget to pack a lunch, then Lisse is a fairly flat walk of approximately 1 km from the Keukenhof gardens.

Once in the town of Lisse, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from, as well as several supermarkets (including an impressively large Albert Heijn). Therefore, don’t worry too much when it comes to food options at Keukenhof.

An Insider's Guide on How to Visit Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe in the Netherlands

It should go without saying that you’ll want to wear your comfiest walking shoes. There are quite literally tens of kilometres of pathways stretching through the gardens and so you’ll also want to pack comfortable clothing.

Since Keukenhof is in the countryside, the area can also be a little colder than Amsterdam and so be sure to bring a warm jacket and scarf along! Finally, you definitely won’t want to forget your camera!

While it’s well worth sitting back for a moment to enjoy the scenery in real time, you’ll probably want to snap a few (or many) photos as well! For a quick guide on how I take all of my macro flower photos as well as wider landscapes, here’s a breakdown of my travel photography gear!

Things to know before visiting Keukenhof (and insider tips and secrets!)

You should know that despite what you may have seen in photos online, Keukenhof has not got any tulip fields! The space is actually a giant garden with perfectly manicured green lawns, sculpted gardens, and artfully arranged floral displays. As such, if you head to Keukenhof expecting to wander amongst bright tulip fields, then you’ll be sorely disappointed.

However, after visiting Keukenhof (and admiring the stunning flower exhibits) , if you still want to enjoy the best of Dutch tulip fields, then there are plenty of open tulip fields surrounding the gardens.

Lisse is well-known around the world for its many colourful fields and many of them can be seen from the roadside. If you do see a field you can enter, remember to be respectful. Don’t pick the flowers, trample on the tulips, and definitely don’t leave the designated paths!

The address for Keukenhof is Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse, Netherlands and opening times are 8 AM – 7:30 PM on a daily basis. Here’s where you can purchase your Keukenhof tickets in advance and save some money.

How to visit the Lisse Tulip Fields in the Bulb Region

Frequently asked questions about Keukenhof

Yes, you are allowed to bring a dog to Keukenhof, though dogs have to be kept on leads and it’s limited to one dog per person. Dogs are also not allowed in certain areas such as the pavilions and restaurants.

As I have mentioned previously, it’s important to note that those who are visiting Keukenhof expecting to see the Dutch tulip fields will be disappointed!

The garden is more of a botanical garden with sculptures, though it is indeed surrounded by tulip fields. The Tulip Barn is in Hillegom and is a cheaper less busy alternative for those who are looking to only take photos with the tulips.

If you’re looking for a souvenir from your time visiting the Dutch garden, then the good news is that there are a number of places across the site where you can purchase unique gifts and souvenirs. There are plenty of the usual suspects such as fridge magnets, mugs, and local foods such as cheese and stroopwaffels.

One of the more unusual stands is an entire shop dedicated to Miffy, the character bunny who comes from the Netherlands. Other more unique souvenirs include wooden clogs (there is a whole store dedicated to clogs close to the windmills) and bulbs.

Yes, as well as free maps that you can pick up at the entrance to the park, there are signs pretty much everywhere directing you on what is in each direction. Basically, it’s pretty hard to get lost when exploring Keukenhof!

If you purchase your tickets online in advance from the official website, then the entrance price is €19.50.

Children benefit from a reduced rate; ages 0-3 are free and ages 4-17 are €9. Car parking is €8,00 and a park guidebook is €5, though there is a free map available upon entry to the garden and it’s fairly easy to navigate so a guidebook is not totally essential.

There is no hotel at the site of Keukenhof itself. However, if you truly want to experience the best of Keukenhof without the crowds, then going at the opening time is your best bet. Luckily, there are a number of accommodation options in Lisse to suit various budgets and tastest:

My personal recommendation: In order to capture photos without all of the other tourists, we made sure to arrive at 8 AM and did this by staying at the Restaurant De Vier Seizoenen .

Clean and comfortable, for an extra fee you can even order breakfast. Otherwise, it’s a fifteen to twenty-minute walk to the tulips of Keukenhof, ensuring that you won’t have to wake up too early. Check prices and availability here.

Room at the Restaurant De Vier Seizoenen in Lisse

Keukenhof takes around three or four hours to visit. As I mentioned previously, the best time to visit is first thing in the morning as later on in the day can get quite crowded. In fact, the gardens are one of the most crowded places I’ve ever been and so it’s best to avoid public holidays, afternoons, and weekends if you can help it.

Half a day is the perfect amount of time to explore all of the different areas of Keukenhof, though you might want to stay the full day if you’re planning on eating on site and doing the boat ride.

Molen Keukenhof, the windmill near Lisse

If you’re visiting Amsterdam in April , then a day trip to the tulip fields of Lisse and the Gardens of Keukenhof are an absolute must. The best option for enjoying the excursion is to purchase the ‘combi-ticket’.

This includes transport (you’ll need to take a ferry to reach the bus that will transport you to Keukenhof) as well as your entrance ticket, which is cheaper than purchasing the ticket on the day. Check prices here.

Otherwise, you should note that there’s no direct way to reach Keukenhof from Amsterdam by public transport, apart from if you drive. The car journey is around twenty-five minutes and there is plenty of parking at the gardens.

Quotes about Amsterdam, the Netherlands: beautiful old houses and amsterdam bucket list

For those looking to combine a visit to a 17th-century storybook city with a visit to the flower fields, then a trip to Leiden is a great place to start. And if you’re in the mood to enjoy even more flowers, then it’s well worth noting that the very first tulip bulbs in the Netherlands were actually grown by Carolus Clusius in around 1593 when he planted them at the University of Leiden.

Today, the Hortus Botanicus (Leiden Botanical Garden) is one of the best hidden gems in Leiden. During Keukenhof opening hours, there’s a special bus that goes from Leiden Centraal straight to the entrance of Keukenhof. The bus takes around half an hour.

You can purchase tickets on the bus using card, though you should know that most buses in the Netherlands do not accept cash. If you want a cheaper than on the day Keukenhof ticket, purchase this gardens entrance ticket in advance.

From either city, you’ll need to take the train to Leiden Centraal. From The Hague this is a fifteen minute train ride, while from Rotterdam it’s a forty-five-minute ride with a train change.

Train travel in Holland is surprisingly affordable and from Leiden, you’ll take the special bus that goes from Leiden Centraal straight to the entrance of Keukenhof. The bus takes around half an hour.

Haarlem is a beautiful city that’s just a ten minute train ride away from Amsterdam. Best-known for its once great North sea trading port, today the city is characterised by its medieval feel and cobbled lanes. I’m visiting Holland in late march and I’m afraid the tulips won’t be in full bloom. Am I needlessly worrying?

I wouldn’t worry too much as Keukenhof opens at the end of March because there are already flowers to see! It’s true that the peak bloom tends to usually be a little later in the year in April but in March you should still see quite a lot of flowers as the gardens are planned so that anyone who visits will be able to see beautiful blooms.

The flower float parade 2023 will end in Haarlem.

Really useful thank you. We are looking to visit next year and you have helped us plan our trip.

Lovely article. I feel so bad that I am Dutch but have never visited the Keukenhof gardens. Looks so lovely.

Nonetheless, it’s important to consider that group tours come with their own set of parameters. The itinerary and schedule are pre-determined, which may not cater to individual preferences or curiosities. Private Keukenhof guided tours offer an entirely different dimension of exploration. These tours are the embodiment of personalization, granting you the power to craft your own journey. Choosing the Right Guided Tour

Selecting the most fitting Keukenhof guided tour entails considering several factors to ensure your choice aligns seamlessly with your preferences and needs.

Budget Considerations

Self-guided tours typically fall somewhere in between. It’s imperative to weigh the cost against the level of experience you desire and to gauge which fits comfortably within your budget.

Tour Duration

The duration of the tour is another paramount factor to contemplate. Group and private tours can vary significantly in duration, ranging from a few hours to a full day. Self-guided tours provide the ultimate flexibility to determine the length of your visit. Ensure that the tour you select harmonizes with the time you have available and your energy levels.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Keukenhof, the Best Garden in Europe [UPDATED 2023]

keukenhof guided tour

The Keukenhof is known as the Garden of Europe , and if you’ve ever had the chance to walk through their green fields, you will truly understand why. For two months every year, from March to mid-May, millions of rainbow-coloured flowers (4.5 million to be exact) bloom over the 32 hectares of gardens inside the Keukenhof. They create what can only be described as a blanket of fantastical aromas and ethereal colours which cover the Dutch countryside.

keukenhof guided tour

When to Visit

In 2023 the Keukenhof will be open daily from 23 March – 14 May from 08:00 – 19:30.

The best time to visit the Keukenhof is before 10:30 am or after 4 pm, this is when the least tourists will be in the park and you’ll have more of the flowers all to yourself. PLUS, the morning sunrise and afternoon sunset provides an incredible backdrop to the rainbow of flowers. If you can avoid going on a weekend, this is also preferable if you’re trying to avoid crowds.

Keukenhof Tickets

Since the park is only open for a few months tickets can sell! Especially if you’re visiting over the weekend or on a holiday you’ll want to be sure to buy your tickets in advance . I would advise buying online either way since it means less time spent in line at the ticket office when you arrive.

Adults cost €19,00 in advance and children are €9,00, kids under 3 are free. But the best thing to do is buy a Combi Ticket which combines your transportation with your admission. The prices are different depending on where you’re departing from, but they range from €30-€35. The bus will drop you off at the main entrance to the gardens so it couldn’t be more convenient!

History of the Keukenhof

The Keukenhof gardens were first established in the 15th century on what was then a substantial hunting ground. The name ‘Keukenhof’ means Court Kitchen in Dutch as the fields once served as a giant herb garden for the Queen’s castle. Throughout the years, the various members of the royal family who inherited the manor continued to expand the garden, and in the 19th century, the Baron and Baroness Van Pallandt hired Jan David Zocher, a renowned landscape architect, to re-design it to create the unique and luscious garden the Netherlands had ever seen.

As time went on, the gardens were bought by the city, and in 1949 the Mayor of Lisse decided to open them up to the public. He held an exhibit of flowers from all over the Netherlands and Europe. People were able to see, and smell, hybrid flowers not available in their local markets. They walked through incredible floral landscapes created by illustrious Dutch landscape architects.

Keukenhof Flowers

Since its opening in 1949, the Keukenhof has held the title as the world’s largest flower garden as well as being the most photographed place on the earth. Today it houses more than 100 varieties of tulips, more than 2,500 trees in 87 types and 15 kilometres of walking paths. To date more than 44 million visitors over the last 60 years have strolled through this real-life Wonderland. In 2018, Keukenhof’s theme will be Romance in Flowers.

Dutch Tulips

The tulips are the main feature of the flower garden. Tulips were first brought to Europe in the 16th century and caught on in popularity in the Netherlands. Tulips were able to stand the harsh temperatures and conditions in the Netherlands more than many other internationally imported flowers. Due to their resilience, Dutch botanists became avid collectors and even started to breed new varieties. Soon, everyone wanted a tulip garden of their own. Tulips became a status symbol for anyone who planted or who carried a bouquet as they walked down the street. Today they have become somewhat ubiquitous, but in the 17th century, they were worth their weight in gold.

Varieties of Tulips

There are different groups and breeds of Dutch tulips. One is called the Couleren , which refers to the red, yellow or white coloured tulips. Then there is then Rosen , which are bright red or white with veining on the petals. The Violetten are the purple or lilac tulips, my personal favourite.

And finally, and best named, is the Bizarden , which are tulip with odd or eccentric appearances. They tend to be brown with purpled or yellow veins running across a jagged petal. A virus was known to infect these tulips during growth and was called the mosaic virus which made the tulips bloom in vibrant colours sometimes with flame-like streaks across the petals. Although it was a virus, it was one that botanists cultivated since those features were more and more desired by buyers for their bizarre appearance.

Access to the Keukenhof

To get to the Keukenhof there a few different ways of arriving depending on where and how you’re travelling.

The Keukenhof is located in the village of Lisse, which is in itself, a charming Dutch village with hundreds of flower fields colouring the countryside. If you’re renting a car while in the Netherlands you can park right at the park for €6. But you must pre-purchased parking ticket.

Driving into the Keukenhof is a great idea since it gives you the ability to drive around the surrounding village to see the farmers fields where they grow all the flowers for the Keukenhof. You can buy your parking pass online when buying your tickets or at the entry to the park.

Public transport

We used the Netherlands’ amazing public transport system to access the park. The best way to figure out your journey is by using the public transport website to map your route. Most people will be accessing the Keukenhof from Amsterdam. The best way to get there is by purchasing the combi-ticket for the gardens which includes your transport and entry to the park. There are two options for the combi-ticket.

The first option costs € 25 and covers the costs of THE BUS ONLY from Schiphol Airport to the park. Which means you’ll be responsible for payment to the airport. This is especially convenient if you are travelling to the Keukenhof directly from the airport. If you are travelling from the city, you’ll want option two, which costs € 30 and provides return access from Amsterdam. The combi-ticket gives you access to the special bus services which runs from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Leiden station or Haarlem directly to the Keukenhof entrance.

Tour Company

There are many tour companies which offer tours of the Keukenhof. These tour companies tend to be a bit rigid on time and sometimes feel a bit impersonally but I know that for some nervous or older travellers, the removal of multiple forms of transport or excessive planning is worth the trade-off. Viator offers many tours of the Keukenhof which also combine views of the surrounding coutryside. With over 200 5-star reviews you really can’t go wrong if this is the kind of experience you’re looking for.

For those travellers I mentioned previously who might have certain issues with public transport but who don’t want to deal with the time constraints of bus tours there is also taxis and uber. These cost between €50-€70 depending on where you’re departing from for a one-way journey. While costly, I think it’s important to provide this information to show inclusivity for all kinds of travellers.

Keukenhof Theme 2023

The theme of 2023’s Keukenhof is Flower Classics . There isn’t much more information released to the public yet but no doubt going back to the classics will bring lots of favourite designs from over the years.

Guide to Exploring the Keukenhof

As soon as we stepped through the door, we were amazed by the colours and the overwhelmingly Dutch atmosphere of the gardens. There was an old wooden crank organ sitting in the front beside the entry fountain and the bright, rosy-cheeked Dutch boys and girls playing their instruments welcomed us inside.

Exploring the Gardens

Before setting out right away, take the provided map to study up and plan your preferred route. There are picnic tables near the entrance, a perfect place to enjoy a morning meal. Although there are a few snack stalls, I would advise stopping by a local bakery before arriving and then eating a little picnic in the gardens. You can eat while watching the other people pass by, smiles on their faces as they took in all the jewel-toned flowers spread out around them.

Orjanje Nassau Pavilion

Every week a flower show is organized in the Orjanje Nassau Pavilion. This is a great place to come to not only see some amazing display but also learn a little bit about native Dutch flowers.

The hedge garden and maze was a lot of fun. We wove in between the thick bushes, discovering sinuous sculptures dotting the area. As we strolled through the garden, we found a small petting zoo with tiny horses and cows. Children were laughing as they reached their hands over the edge to pet the fuzzy little creatures.

The Windmill

Then, it was off to visit the main feature of this Dutch Disneyland; the Windmill. We climbed up the windmill to get a better look out over the fields where the tulips are initially grown before getting moved to the gardens.

As we climbed down, we took a moment to try on a few pairs of wooden clogs. The exhibit in front compared different ancient clogs to their modern-day equivalent.

Orchid Greenhouse

Our next stop took us away from the array of tulips and into the Orchid building . Orchids are amazing flowers. They look so strange and almost otherworldly.

keukenhof guided tour

Red Romance Garden

Leaving the orchid, you can step into the Red Romance Garden. We passed by what can only be described as a “Barbie’s Dream Greenhouse”. The bright pink and red flowers were almost blinding. I had never seen anything like that before. Thank goodness we brought our sunglasses!

Japanese Garden

Tulips are the main attraction, but there is also a Japanese garden, a sculpture garden and even a lily pad garden where they added fake lily pads underwater that you could walk on. They sat just below the water, so the children playing appeared as if they were walking on water.

People seemed to come here not just to see the flower but to be inspired by them. A man had his easel out and had just begun to sketch out his next masterpiece as we passed by.
