The brightest light on the Avenue of the Arts is the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts , a dazzling regional performing arts center whose discreet brick exterior rises to a bold 150-foot glass vaulted rooftop for startling views of the city — one of the many venues that make up Ensemble Arts .
Eight esteemed resident companies and a variety of touring soloists and ensembles perform at attractions like the Academy of Music and the Miller Theater, where more than one million guests per year enjoy opera, orchestra, theatrical and even circus performances.
The History
Eight resident companies and a variety of touring soloists and ensembles perform at Kimmel Cultural Campus venues.
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s need for a modern concert hall — coupled with the city’s need for a venue to serve the community and visiting artists — proved the catalyst for the Kimmel Center , which was completed in December 2001. The design team behind the stunning building included Rafael Viñoly Architects, PC; Artec Consultants, Inc. and Theatre Project Consultants.
The facility is named for sportswear manufacturer and Philadelphian Sidney Kimmel, the largest private donor.
Today, the center is part of Ensemble Arts, which encompasses the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music and the Miller Theater.
Resident companies include the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, PHILADANCO (Philadelphia Dance Company), The Philly POPS, the Opera Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Ballet and the Curtis Institute of Music.

John Mulaney announces Philadelphia tour dates at the Kimmel Center
This will be the comedian's first tour in more than 2 years.
John Mulaney is going back on tour this year and will stop in Philadelphia in October.
John Mulaney announced his first comedy show tour since 2018, five months after his 60-day stint in a Pennsylvania rehab clinic for alcohol and cocaine addiction.
The comedian will be performing five shows at the Kimmel Center from Oct. 1 to 5.

Mulaney posted to his Twitter account for the first time since December of last year, sharing the tour announcement for four new cities, including Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, New Orleans and Las Vegas.
pic.twitter.com/5P9xNNlvPI — John Mulaney (@mulaney) July 16, 2021
Mulaney checked out of a Pennsylvania rehab facility in February and three months later had a brief residency at a single venue in New York in May and tickets sold out fast.
The comedian also divorced his wife Anne-Marie Tendler after six years of marriage.
Critics said Mulaney's post-pandemic comedy sessions are a bit of a departure from his earlier shows. Vulture reported Mulaney ditched his typical suit for a striped polo and jeans during the set, and offered a more candid, free-flowing performance.
"It’s been a long and weird year or so, and seeing Mulaney trend on social media for positive reasons is certainly welcome news all around," the event listing said.
His fans took the news of the newly announced tour dates.

You can buy tickets to the event online at the Kimmel Center website.
The Kimmel Center website says Mulaney's shows are a cell phone-free event. Audience members will seal their phone in a locked pouch throughout the show and anyone caught on their phone will be removed from the show.

A scene from Hamilton in Philly
Most Philly theaters are still scratching their heads trying to figure out what to make of 2021. But the Kimmel Center seems fully committed to bringing live theater back to Broad Street this year. And how. The cultural institution just announced the return of Hamilton in Philly.
The Kimmel Center’s popular Broadway series, which actually takes place at other venues, kicks off in October with Hamilton and keeps right on going through the summer of 2022.
Here’s the full schedule:
• Hamilton (October 20 – November 28, 2021, Academy of Music) • Rain – A Tribute to The Beatles (October 29 – 31, 2021, Merriam Theater) • Anastasia (November 23 – 28, 2021, Merriam Theater) • Stomp (December 28, 2021 – January 2, 2022, Merriam Theater) • Pretty Woman: The Musical (January 4 – 16, 2022, Academy of Music) • Hadestown (February 9 – 20, 2022, Academy of Music) • Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (February 22 –27, 2022, Academy of Music) • Rent: 25th Anniversary Farewell Tour (March 4 – 6, 2022, Merriam Theater) • Oklahoma! (March 8 – 20, 2022, Forrest Theatre) • Waitress (March 29 – April 3, 2022, Academy of Music) • Hairspray (May 16 – 22, 2022, Merriam Theater) • To Kill A Mockingbird (July 12 – 24, 2022, Academy of Music) • Dear Evan Hansen (August 16 – 28, 2022, Forrest Theatre)
The Kimmel Center’s productions came to a grinding halt just over one year ago when COVID-19 shut down everything everywhere . Many theater companies have adapted by going digital. But audiences are clamoring to “be in the room where it happens,” as it were.
“Our donors and patrons have given us strength during our year-long closure for which we are exceedingly grateful,” said Kimmel Center president and CEO Anne Ewers in a statement. “What has struck us most, during this time, is the community’s need to be together. So now we eagerly prepare for a safe reopening, allowing us to gather around the healing power of the arts at last.”
The Kimmel Center has all sorts of new protocols and procedures in place both to protect fans and also to allow them flexibility should they need to swap their tickets. You can read about all that here and here .
Speaking of tickets, you’re probably wondering how to get yours for Hamilton in Philly. If you just want tickets for Hamilton, you’re going to have to wait until single-production tickets go on sale. But if you want to become a subscriber to the Broadway series, you can secure your tickets now. Visit the Kimmel’s Broadway website or call 215-893-1955.
We’ll see you there. In the meantime, stay safe!

Philly Premiere of AIN'T TOO PROUD – THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS Comes to Kimmel Cultural Campus
The Broadway smash hit musical will play at the Campus' Academy of Music January 3 - 21 as part of the 2023-24 Broadway series.
The Kimmel Cultural Campus and The Shubert Organization will present the first national tour of Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations for the first time in Philadelphia. The Broadway smash hit musical will play at the Campus' Academy of Music January 3 - 21 as part of the 2023-24 Broadway series. Tickets on sale now at www.kimmelculturalcampus.org and in-person at the box office. Full ticketing details below.
"The Temptations and their soul-stirring hits are part of musical history and the public consciousness as much today as they were 50 years ago," said Matias Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center. "We are honored to present this Broadway hit musical in Philadelphia for the very first time, sharing the stories behind the music."
Featuring Grammy-winning songs and Tony-winning moves, Ain't Too Proud is the electrifying new musical that follows The Temptations' extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their signature dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, they rose to the top of the charts, creating an amazing 42 Top Ten Hits - with 14 reaching #1 - and being voted the greatest R&B group of all time by Billboard Magazine in 2017. The rest is history - how they met, the groundbreaking heights they hit, and how personal and political conflicts threatened to tear the group apart as the United States fell into civil unrest. This thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal is set to the beat of the group's treasured hits, including "My Girl," "Just My Imagination," "Get Ready," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and so many more.
Stepping into the role of ' Otis Williams ' will be original first national tour cast member, Michael Andreaus , and joining the tour from the Original Broadway Company is E. Clayton Cornelious as ' Paul Williams .' They join the current Classic Temptations Jalen Harris as 'Eddie Kendricks,' Harrell Holmes Jr. as 'Melvin Franklin,' and Elijah Ahmad Lewis as ' David Ruffin '.
The tour also welcomes new cast members, Derek Adams , Reggie Bromell , Felander, Treston J. Henderson , Quiana Onrae'l Holmes, Ryan M. Hunt , Jeremy Kelsey , AJ Lockhart , Dwayne P. Mitchell , Devin Price , Brittny Smith , Amber Mariah Talley , and Nazarria Workman , who will be performing with current tour cast members Brian C. Binion, Shayla Brielle G ., Devin Holloway , and Andrew Volzer .
After breaking house records at Berkeley Rep, The Kennedy Center, CTG's Ahmanson Theatre, and Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre, Ain't Too Proud opened on Broadway in March 2019, where it continued to play sold-out audiences and broke the Imperial Theatre's box office record. Written by Kennedy Prize-winning playwright Dominique Morisseau , directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff , and featuring the Tony Award-winning choreography of Sergio Trujillo , this dazzling production now brings the untold story of the legendary quintet to audiences across the country.
The creative team also includes Tony Award nominee Robert Brill (scenic design), Tony Award winner Paul Tazewell (costume design), Tony Award winner Howell Binkley (lighting design), Tony Award winner Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Drama Desk Award winner Peter Nigrini (projection design), Drama Desk Award winner Charles G. LaPointe (hair and wig design), Steve Rankin (fight direction), Brian Harlan Brooks (tour resident director), Edgar Godineaux (associate choreographer), John Miller (music coordinator), Molly Meg Legal (production supervisor), and Nicole Olson (production stage manager). Orchestrations are by Tony Award recipient Harold Wheeler , with music supervision and arrangements by Kenny Seymour . Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting, Merri Sugarman , C.S.A.
The national tour of Ain't Too Proud is produced by Ira Pittelman and Tom Hulce , in association with Work Light Productions.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999 or online at www.kimmelculturalcampus.org . In-person ticket sales can be conducted daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Academy of Music Box Office, located at 240 S. Broad Street.
