Still, Royal Caribbean doesn't just operate massive vessels. The Miami-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half or a third of the size of Royal Caribbean's biggest ships. These ships, notably, have far fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

What is the biggest Royal Caribbean ship?

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas . Measuring 250,800 gross tons, it's not only the biggest Royal Caribbean ship but also the biggest cruise ship ever built by any line. It's loaded with more bars, restaurants, theaters and deck-top attractions than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that are bigger than anything seen before. The series is called the Icon Class.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

At 250,800 gross tons, Icon of the Seas is more than 6% larger than Royal Caribbean's 1-year-old Wonder of the Seas , which previously was the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (and the biggest ship operated by any line). Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers — a new record for a passenger ship. That's about 7% higher than the maximum capacity of Wonder of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,084 passengers.

The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas was built with a lot more cabins that have plenty of extra bunks to accommodate families with many children. It also has more amenities geared toward families. This includes a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is Grandeur of the Seas. Measuring just 73,817 tons, it's just a third the size of Icon of the Seas.

Grandeur of the Seas dates to 1996, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 27 years old, it's the oldest vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet and probably will be phased out sometime in the next few years.

Except for a rock climbing wall, Grandeur of the Seas has none of the gee-whiz Royal Caribbean top-deck attractions found on newer Royal Caribbean vessels, such as skydiving simulators and giant water parks. For the most part, its top deck is lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s.

That said, Grandeur of the Seas has a loyal following among Royal Caribbean fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Royal Caribbean ships coming?

Royal Caribbean currently has three new cruise ships on order, all of which will be among its biggest cruise ships ever — if not the biggest.

The first to arrive in July will be Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line's iconic Oasis Class series. Launched in 2009 with the debut of Oasis of the Seas, the Oasis-class ships have dominated the world of mega-size cruise ships since that year. At the time the class began rolling out, the vessels were around 40% bigger than the next-biggest cruise ships, and they have continued to be the biggest and most amenity-laden ships in the world ever since.

Utopia of the Seas is expected to be roughly the same size as Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's second-biggest cruise ship. But it'll be smaller than the line's biggest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean also has two more vessels similar to Icon of the Seas on order from shipyards for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Both ships are expected to be as big or bigger than Icon of the Seas.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Royal Caribbean ships?

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than Royal Caribbean's older ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Royal Caribbean's biggest Oasis-class vessels, for instance, you'll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks. Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks.

The line's new Icon of the Seas has a similar array of amenities.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest Royal Caribbean ships can operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

The World's Largest Cruise Ship Is Coming in January—Here's What It's Like Inside

The biggest thing to ever hit cruising is coming in January 2024, when Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas —which will be the largest cruise ship in the world —will debut to passengers for the first time.

With capacity for nearly 10,000 passengers and crew, Icon of the Seas is billed as part all-inclusive resort, part theme park, and a massive destination unto itself . Clocking in at 250,380 gross tons and measuring nearly a quarter mile long (1,198 feet to be exact), the vast ship will sport a total of 20 decks, 18 of which will be accessible to guests.

The ship will be divided into eight different “neighborhoods,” each with their own distinct atmospheres, dining options, and activities. “ Icon of the Seas is truly what we call a white paper ship,” Anna Drescher, manager of architectural design, new building and innovation for Royal Caribbean group, said in a video statement . “The reason that we call it that is we start with a blank sheet of sketch paper, so it truly is starting fresh.”

In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland. Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas.

The ship's typical seven-day itineraries include three at-sea days, so passengers have time to fully enjoy the endless choices of amenities on board. “We want guests to walk up to the ship and just have this moment of: I can’t believe that’s where I’m going ,” said Jennifer Goswami, the line’s senior manager of product development.

Here's a look at the enormous scale of the new ship and what to expect on board.

When it begins sailing, the Icon of the Seas will offer a total of 2,805 staterooms that can hold 5,610 passengers at double occupancy, or a maximum of 7,600 guests. Passengers can choose from a whopping 28 different room types, including Sunset Suites with wraparound balconies and Family Infinite Balcony staterooms with bunkbeds fit for a family of up to six.

The largest suite on board will be the three-story, 1,772-square-foot “Ultimate Family Townhouse,” which comes with its own movie theater, ping-pong table, karaoke, and a slide between floors. It can sleep up to eight people and costs approximately $75,000 per week.

Among the eight "neighborhoods," or sections of the ship with distinct ambiance, are Central Park, which offers greenery and sidewalk cafes, and The Hideaway, which aims for a European beach club aesthetic. There's also The Suite Neighborhood, Surfside, Thrill Island, Chill Island, The Royal Promenade, and the Aquadome.

The ship's 2,350 crew members will also get their own neighborhood, complete with amenities like a gaming room and hair salon.

Another superlative for Icon will be sporting the largest waterpark at sea. The park, called Category 6, features six different record-breaking waterslides, including the tallest onboard waterslide. There will also be a free-fall slide, plus a raft-style slide for four passengers to ride together.

Seven pools and nine whirlpools will be located throughout the ship, including the first infinity pool on a cruise ship to be suspended in the air. The Royal Bay pool, located on the 15th deck, will break the record for largest pool at sea, holding an astounding 40,000 gallons of water.

Across the towering vessel, there'll be more than 20 food venues and 15 bars and nightlife experiences, including a sweeping three-level main dining room.

Among the options for grabbing a drink will be the line's first onboard swim-up bar, a walk-up Champagne bar, and a bar specializing in coffee cocktails like espresso martinis.

On the entertainment front, Royal Caribbean has hired 75 performers to titillate guests across three cavernous theaters. The Absolute Zero ice arena will feature shows with Olympic-level skaters, while the AquaTheater will combine the talents of divers, robots, and skateboarders.

In the Royal Theater, a 16-piece orchestra (the largest one at sea), will accompany shows like the Wizard of Oz.

In smaller venues throughout the ship, like the dueling piano bar, 50 live musicians and comedians will perform each night, making it possible for every type of passenger to find something that fits their style.

Here are my thoughts and review of Wonder of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship.

Embarkation/Debarkation – This is one area where Royal Caribbean really stands out from other cruise lines. Embarkation was a total breeze, even though over 4,000 passengers were boarding the ship that day.  Since I had an early flight into FLL, I arrived a bit early at the terminal. Because of that, there was maybe a 10 minute wait after checking in before I could board Wonder of the Seas.

As long as you complete the check-in process through Royal Caribbean’s App, you should breeze right through embarkation.

Debarkation was quicker than ever and I carried all my luggage off myself. I think I went from ship to curb in around 5 minutes.  I literally never stopped walking from the time I scanned my card to get off the ship until I was outside the terminal. The new machines that scan your face for customs have really eliminated most lines when getting off the ship.

Cabin – I stayed in an oceanview balcony cabin on Deck 6. I loved the number of power outlets the cabin had including on each side of the bed. Overall, the cabin had everything that I needed for a week long cruise and I had zero complaints about it. It was clean, comfortable, and roomy (for a cruise ship cabin).

Crew – On every maiden voyage, there are always a few hiccups since the staff is on a brand new cruise ship. However, I can’t say enough good things about the staff on Wonder of the Seas.  Several of them remembered my name from day 1 and I was always greeted with a friendly smile and hello.

Restaurants/Food – The world’s largest cruise ship comes with a plethora of dining options. You can find the world’s largest Windjammer buffet and a nice variety of complimentary and specialty dining options. There are places to eat all around the ship.

One new restaurant that Royal Caribbean added on Wonder of the Seas is The Mason Jar Southern Restaurant.  I tried out this new dining hotspot for brunch and it was my favorite meal of the cruise since I love southern and comfort food.  You can see photos and the brunch menu below.  Everyone at our table was raving about it.

There is also Chops Grille (steakhouse), Hooked (seafood), Izumi Sushi and Teppanyaki, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Wonderland (truly unique dining experience), and 150 Central Park. I ate at 150 Central Park on the first night of the cruise and it’s the ship’s upscale specialty restaurant.  I thought the food was good but the portions were a bit small for the extra price. I did love the setting in Central Park though.

Ship – Yes, Wonder of the Seas is the largest cruise ship ever built.  We sailed at around 75% capacity and the ship never even came close to feeling like I was crowded.  I have sailed on Oasis class ships before at full capacity and always felt the same way.  Even though the ship carries over 6,000 passengers, there are so many public places that you never really feel crowded unless a show was just getting out.

Family Area – Royal Caribbean added something that I’ve never before seen on a cruise ship. In the place of one of the Flowriders, they have a new family playground where parents can play with their kids.  This is an unsupervised area but something I would really enjoy if I cruised with my family.

Solarium – The Solarium at the front of the ship quickly became my one of my favorite spots on board. I really love how Royal Caribbean completely enclosed this area so you can enjoy it no matter what the weather is.  They can heat it when it’s cool and turn the air conditioning on when sailing to the Caribbean in the summer months.

The Solarium also has a large hot tub with glass walls overlooking the ship.  I mean, how cool is this?

Boardwalk/Central Park – If you have never sailed on one of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class cruise ships, there are two areas of the ship that are unlike anything else offered at sea.

Central Park is located on Deck 8 midship and is full of real trees and plants. There are several restaurants and shops in this area.  This is quickly became my favorite area of the ship at night and it felt like I wasn’t even on a cruise ship. It was so peaceful, it’s the perfect area to sit back and enjoy a drink or to enjoy one of the ship’s specialty dining options.

Boardwalk is located at the aft on Wonder of the Seas and has all the vibes of Coney Island.  There’s a carousel, huge sports bar, a Johnny Rockets, candy store, hot dog stand, and the Aqua Theatre.

The Aqua Theatre offers unique water, light, and diving shows.  It’s really incredible the shows that Royal Caribbean puts on in this area and something you won’t find on any other class of cruise ship in the world.

Entertainment – Royal Caribbean offers shows in three different parts of the ship.  They have the standard main theatre shows, ice skating shows in Studio B (Yes, there’s an ice skating rink on board), and in the Aqua Theatre.  They also brought on several comedians throughout the cruise.

There really is something for everyone including laser tag.

Itinerary – Our cruise left from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and visited San Juan, Nassau, and the cruise line’s two private cruise ports/islands, Labadee and CocoCay.  Having a cruise that visited both Labadee and CocoCay was really nice.

I did the zipline on Labadee and it was the highlight of my day.  It’s the longest over the water zipline in the world and I can’t wait to do it again on my next visit there.

Here are a few tips that I want to share with you that I learned after my week onboard Wonder of the Seas.

If you have a beverage package, Starbucks is not included with it. However, you can get a specialty coffee at Cafe Promenade that is included in the beverage packages (deluxe and refreshment). They even use Starbucks coffee beans and you can get cappuccinos, mochas, lattes etc.

I discovered the Park Cafe for breakfast near the end of the cruise and I wish I had found it earlier.

The Bionic Bar, robots that make drinks, has a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks that you can order.

The WiFi was good, it did go out a few times for a couple minutes but I was able to work all week on it without any problems.

Royal Caribbean added a TV screen on the pool deck for the first time on an Oasis class ship.  The best spot to watch the TV is by the Astronaut.

Speaking of Astronauts, there are three of them around the ship.  I hope you have fun trying to find them on your cruise.

Since the ship was originally scheduled to sail in Asia, there is a Karaoke room that was a lot of fun at night.

In the spa, there is a juice bar that is included with beverage packages.

At night, there is live music all around the ship including at Boleros, Schooner Bar, Mason Jar, Central Park, and Music Hall.

Icon of the Seas is finally here. Here's what passengers can expect on board.

The world's largest cruise ship is ready to welcome passengers.

Royal Caribbean International’s much-buzzed-about Icon of the Seas will sail its maiden voyage this weekend, beginning cruises to the Caribbean. But the ship is a destination of its own.

The vessel features a stacked lineup of attractions for every member of the family. The first in the new Icon Class, it made waves even before leaving the shipyard, generating record bookings for the brand – and hot takes online .

“We designed a ship that really hits squarely in what the consumer is looking for, especially the family, multi-generational consumer,” Jason Liberty, president and CEO of the line’s parent company Royal Caribbean Group, told USA TODAY during a preview cruise on Icon over the weekend.

Where will Icon of the Seas sail?

The ship will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami. Each cruise will visit the line’s private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay , which also has a new adults-only area, Hideaway Beach .

Icon’s maiden voyage on Saturday will also visit Basseterre in St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Thomas.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

Icon is 20 decks high, nearly 1,200 feet long, and 250,800 gross tons. The ship can accommodate 5,610 guests at double occupancy.

What activities does Icon have?

Icon is divided into eight distinct neighborhoods – five of which are new – each with its own offerings.

The aptly named Thrill Island features the Category 6 water park, which the line bills as the largest water park at sea, and Crown’s Edge, where guests can walk 154 feet above the ocean along the brand’s massive logo. Other options include the FlowRider surf simulator, mini golf and rock climbing.

The three-deck Chill Island, meanwhile, is home to four of Icon’s seven pools along with ample loungers to catch some sun (or chill in the shade).

A towering pink flamingo statue stands at the entrance to Surfside, the line’s first neighborhood designed for young families. Parents can kick back at Water’s Edge Pool while supervising kids at Splashaway Bay and Baby Bay. There’s also an arcade, a carousel (with figurines that kids the line consulted helped choose) and more. If your feet are tired, you can also ride a slide down as you come from another neighborhood, Central Park, one deck above.

By contrast, the Hideaway on Deck 15 is a child-free zone, like the CocoCay area of a similar name. Passengers 18 and over can take in views from a suspended infinity pool at the ship’s aft or relax in whirlpools while a DJ supplies a soundtrack. Remixes of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” and Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” both made the cut during the preview cruise.

“It’s almost like urban planning,” Liberty said. “Like, how do you create that perfect city that can cater to all different generations and demographics?”

The AquaTheater in the striking new AquaDome – an enclosed steel and glass structure at the front of the ship – will host the “Aqua Action!: Range of Emotion” show, which combines high diving with aerial dance, skateboarding and more. Other shows include “The Wizard of Oz” in the Royal Theater and “Starburst: Elemental Beauty” in the Absolute Zero ice arena.

What is the food like?

The ship has more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges, around half of which are new to the line. Those include AquaDome Market, the line’s first food hall serving Mediterranean fare, sweet and savory crepes and more; sushi and street food walk-up window Izumi in the Park; and Empire Supper Club, a 38-seat venue with a multi-course meal, cocktail pairings and live jazz.

Guests will also find new cocktails and mocktails throughout the ship, making their debut at venues like 1400 Lobby Bar in the ship’s Royal Promenade; Rye & Bean, which serves coffee and coffee-infused cocktails; and Swim & Tonic, the line’s first swim-up bar at sea.

Icon features familiar eateries like the Windjammer buffet, steakhouse Chops Grille and Izumi in the Park’s sit-down predecessor, Izumi, as well.

What stood out on board?

Icon’s scale was clear as soon as I arrived at PortMiami, and that translated to many spacious interiors. 

The elevator banks felt roomy even by land-based standards, and the ship’s Royal Promenade offered ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Helping to open up the space, The Pearl serves as part support structure, part art piece lined with thousands of kinetic tiles.

At one point, as I exited Lou’s Jazz ‘n Blues and walked out into the open-air Central Park – with its more than 30,500 plants and walking paths – I briefly forgot I was on a cruise ship.

How much does Icon of the Seas cost?

Amid high demand, Icon commanded higher fares in the run-up to its debut, but prices vary by sailing date, stateroom category and other factors. A seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise departing Sept. 7 starts at $2,989 per person based on double occupancy for an interior stateroom, according to the line’s website .

The fare includes most food on board, drinks like lemonade and iced tea and more.

Icon of the Seas will have five new neighborhood concepts

Royal Caribbean has just announced more details for its latest mega-ship, Icon of the Seas. Scheduled to set sail on her first voyage in January 2024, Icon of the Seas will usurp Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world. 

The 20-deck ship will feature 2,805 staterooms and have a maximum capacity of 7,600 guests—over 500 more passengers than Wonder of the Seas. It will also kick off the brand’s new Icon class of vessels and introduce passengers to five new "neighborhood" concepts, with eight neighborhoods in total.

Among the new neighborhoods is Chill Island, the ship’s new take on a pool deck. Chill Island will be located mid-ship across three decks and hold four of the ship’s seven pools, including the brand’s first-ever swim-up bar at sea. 

On the other end of the spectrum, the new Thrill Island neighborhood will be packed with adrenaline adventures, from the six waterslides within its Category 6 waterpark (the largest at-sea) to the FlowRider and rock wall. You can also walk along the edge of the ship’s Crown & Anchor logo, which hangs off the side on the top decks of the ship.

Icon will also introduce the AquaDome. A dynamic entertainment space featuring a 55-foot waterfall, it functions as a spot for 220-degree ocean views by day and a stage and nightlife venue at night. Meanwhile, the family-friendly Surfside is designed to keep kids of all ages entertained with water and dry activities, kids club areas, and an adjacent three-story family townhouse. 

The Hideaway neighborhood will boast an industry first with its fully-suspended infinity pool. There will also be plenty of deck space set up with sun loungers and a dedicated bar. It hasn’t been explicitly announced, but we’re guessing this will be for adults only. 

Returning neighborhoods such as Central Park, Suite Neighborhood, and Royal Promenade will also undergo some revamping. For one, Central Park will be spread out over five decks, displaying four living plant walls and containing about 20 percent more plants than in previous iterations. 

In addition to these new and expanded neighborhoods, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas will also introduce new stateroom features like suites with infinite balconies and redesigned family suites that can fit up to six and offer split bathrooms and dynamic spaces.

“With each new ship, we raise the bar in the travel industry while enhancing what our guests know and love,” Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said in a statement. “From the moment they step on board, every experience is specifically designed to give them the best vacation anywhere on land and at sea. With Icon of the Seas,   we’ve taken this to a new level and made the ultimate family vacation.”

Icon of the Seas will be available for booking starting this month via the Royal Caribbean website .

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's wildly hyped Icon of the Seas — see what it's like traveling on the world's largest cruise ship that can carry nearly 10,000 people

Introverts, look away: Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , the world's largest cruise ship, set sail on January 27, marking a new era in the mega-cruise-ship boom.

The start of Icon's service has been a long time coming for the cruise brand and fans of massive ships. Royal Caribbean and Finland's Meyer Turku shipyard began constructing the behemoth vessel in 2021. A year later, the cruise line saw its largest booking day as reservations opened for the Icon of the Seas in October 2022.

Since then, Michael Bayley, the CEO and president of Royal Caribbean International, has been touting the new ship as "the best-selling product in the history of our business." And for good reason: From its colossal size to its over 40 restaurants and bars, Icon overshadows almost all of its predecessors.

I joined the ship's complimentary, three-night preview sailing on January 20. Take a look at what it's like on the $2 billion floating resort designed to accommodate up to 9,950 people — 2,350 crew and 7,600 guests .

Let’s start with the classic fan favorite: the pools.

Four of the ship's seven swimming holes are on Icon's version of a traditional pool deck, Chill Island . Here, travelers can float around a 5,800-square-foot pool and a smaller one with a swim-up bar .

But Chill Island isn't Icon's crème de la crème.

With wild outdoor amenities, including a water park, lounging by the pool fell low on my to-do list.

Instead, it's Thrill Island — the go-to place for all things, well, thrilling.

While there, guests can step into a harness to traverse one of the ship's most adrenaline-pumping activities: Crown's Edge. Expect to dangle 154 feet above the ocean when the floor unexpectedly drops from under your feet .

Not interested in spending a few milliseconds wondering if you’re about to plunge to your death?

Icon of the Seas' amenities also include the more peaceful mini-golf course, sports court, rock-climbing wall, and surf simulator, all near — and below — Crown's Edge's elevated course .

Guests will find the perfect mix of excitement and fun at the neighboring six-slide water park — without the sweaty palms.

The over-17,000-square-foot mecca of screaming children — and adults — includes a 46-foot-tall drop slide and what Royal Caribbean says is the first family-raft slide on a cruise ship .

The slides’ water was heated during my chilly day at sea.

But learn from my mistake: You'll probably guzzle your body weight in warm water if you scream during the drops .

If it’s not evident yet, the Icon of the Seas was designed to target families — so much so that an entire section of the ship is dedicated to children under 6.

Surfside, about 10 decks below Thrill and Chill Islands, is where younger travelers can romp around the water playground, spin around the eclectic carousel, and spend their parents' money at the arcade .

A giant pink flamingo statue grounds this quaint neighborhood, while the unlimited soft-serve ice cream and churro stands keep families with a sweet tooth coming back.

The youngest sailors can also wind down with Surfside's bedtime-story readings .

Like me, travelers without youngsters may quickly learn to avoid these spaces.

Fortunately, sections such as Hideaway and its suspended infinity pool are kid-free. So is Cloud 17, another pool, and the nighttime comedy show.

Central Park, a centerpiece on many Royal Caribbean mega ships, isn’t adult-only.

But significantly fewer children frolic around this open-air destination than the rest of the ship .

This neighborhood has no loud activities, slides, or giant flamingos.

Instead, it's a quiet and contemplative space embellished with over 30,550 live plants, luxury stores, restaurants, and bars .

Central Park also has a live jazz club.

But compared to the rest of the ship's entertainment lineup, Lou's Jazz 'n Blues likely isn't among the most coveted show venues .

Good luck snagging a seat at the AquaTheater for a showing of the popular 'Aqua Action!'

This display of divers, nine-foot-tall robotic arms, synchronized swimmers, and skateboarders replaces the typical — ahem, cringe — cruise song-and-dance show.

No ice skaters are in this performance, though — they're busy with the ship's other ice-skating show .

But if you're partial to a marvelous musical moment, the primary — dry — theater also does a savory rendition of 'The Wizard of Oz.'

Keep your expectations within reason: Toto is half-puppeteer, half-puppet dog. Both are equally expressive .

After a full day of activities and shows, hungry guests have 21 restaurants at their disposal.

But only about half of Icon of the Seas' restaurants are complimentary. This includes the buffet, Central Park's café, and the five-venue food hall .

Be prepared to pull out your wallet for sushi, lobster, steak, and rabbit.

The most expensive dining venue, Empire Supper Club, costs over $200 a person. Fortunately, you can drink the pain of this price away: it includes a cocktail pairing .

Icon offers plenty of other booze-and-cruise opportunities with 20 bars on board.

Almost every section of the ship presents opportunities to drink.

At night, the Royal Promenade and its strip of seven watering holes — including karaoke and dueling-piano bars — becomes a do-it-yourself bar crawl .

AquaTheater’s neighboring Rye and Bean adds a tea and coffee-powered flair to cocktails, while Surfside’s Lemon Post flexes a lemonade-stand-inspired drink menu.

If you choose to booze it up, the 1,198-foot-long, 250,800-gross-ton giant cruise ship likely won't be the cause of your seasickness or hangover — I, the self-proclaimed Queen of Motion Sickness, barely felt it move during my three-night trip .

I frequently retreated to my stateroom to take a break from the overwhelming ship.

But ironically, even thinking about the number of cabins can feel overwhelming. Icon's 2,805 floating hotel rooms comprise 28 cabin categories, including several new ones for Royal Caribbean .

But even the cheapest, windowless interior cabin can be costly.

During its first year in service, the giant vessel will operate year-round seven-night sailings from Miami to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

Icon's least expensive 2024 sailing currently starts at almost $2,590 a person .

At about $370 per person a day, sailing on Royal Caribbean's new product costs as much as some premium cruise lines.

But let's not forget this price also includes admission to a water park, nightly shows, half of the dining options, and the exhaustion that will inevitably come with being overwhelmed by the giant floating resort .

Royal Caribbean Is Building the World's Biggest Cruise Ship — Again

Royal Caribbean just keeps getting bigger.

Just one year after beating its own record for the world’s largest cruise ship , the cruise line has cut metal on another, even bigger ship that should set another world record on its maiden voyage in 2021.

The cruise line is in the process of creating its fifth Oasis ship , the largest class of boat Royal Caribbean has on offer. The first Oasis ship, Oasis of the Seas, debuted in 2008 and, at the time, had the honorific of largest cruise ship in the world. It weighs 225,000 gross tons, stretches 1,184 feet long and is capable of carrying 6,296 passengers.

Last year, the Symphony of the Seas took the title of largest ship, weighing 228,081 gross tons, stretching 1,188 feet long and capable of transporting 6,680 guests and 2,200 crew members.

The 2021 ship is being constructed at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Very little is known about the ship, except that it will be bigger than anything Royal Caribbean has done before. In a statement, all the cruise line said is that the new ship “will combine the iconic seven-neighborhood concept that her sister ships feature with a bold and unexpected lineup of thrilling experiences, imaginative dining, unparalleled entertainment and the latest technology.”

The ship has yet to be named — but it will likely have the words “of the sea” included, if past trends are any indication. But Royal Caribbean won’t stop there. A sixth ship in the Oasis class is scheduled to make its debut in 2023.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. Oceania Vista: May 2023

The 746-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur will be Regent Seven Seas Cruises' third Explorer-class vessel when it launches late this fall. The line's signature Regent Suite – coming in at an impressive 4,443 square feet – has also been redesigned by Miami firm Studio DADO.

Celebrity Ascent: November 2023

Icon of the Seas: January 2024

Icon of the Seas is the first Icon-class vessel in the Royal Caribbean International fleet – and the first new class of ship since 2014. When the massive vessel debuts in January 2024, it will replace Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas as the largest ship at sea (Icon of the Seas is 6% larger). The ship features eight distinct neighborhoods – including the new Surfside neighborhood, a colorful space geared toward family fun with kids clubs, Splashaway Bay, themed eateries and bars, adjacent staterooms and more.

There are four additional new neighborhoods as well. Thrill Island features Category 6, the largest water park at sea, while Chill Island boasts the line's first swim-up bar and The Hideaway features the first suspended infinity pool at sea. AquaDome, the impressive glass-enclosed space at the top of the ship, is home to the AquaTheater, panoramic ocean views, a waterfall, and bars and restaurants.

Sun Princess: February 2024

When Queen Anne launches in spring 2024, it will be Cunard Line's 249th ship since the company's inception in 1840, and the line's first new vessel in 14 years. The 3,000-passenger ship will feature a fresh, modern design, yet still give a nod to the Cunard's art deco past.

Once on board, guests will discover new entertainment venues like the Bright Lights Society show bar and more wide-open spaces throughout the ship, as well as Cunard 's first two-story theater. New international dining options include Japanese restaurant Aji Wa with sushi and omakase menus, plus Indian cuisine at Aranya. Queen Anne also offers an extensive health and wellness program in collaboration with health group Mareel that features a large thermal suite, a spa pool and a top-deck wellness studio.

Utopia of the Seas: July 2024

Utopia of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean's sixth (and final) Oasis-class ship when it debuts in summer 2024. With a capacity of 5,668 passengers, the vessel will join the line's other Oasis- and Icon-class ships as the largest cruise ships sailing on the high seas. The ship will have the same eight neighborhoods as other Oasis-class ships, including Central Park, The Boardwalk and the Pool & Sports Zone.

The 40-plus food and beverage options will include new additions like the Pesky Parrot bar and a themed "mixed reality" dining experience that takes place on a train. A reimagined playscape is another addition, with nets, games, puzzles, slides and climbing walls for junior cruisers. The line's Ultimate Abyss – a dry slide with 10 stories of thrilling twists and turns – will now stretch an additional 43 feet, making it the longest dry slide at sea.

Explora II: August 2024

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Meanwhile, "Disney The Tale of Moana" – a Broadway-style production based on the film "Moana" – will be exclusive to Disney Treasure. Adults will also find new lounges, such as the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society and the Periscope Pub, which is inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Disney Treasure can carry up to 4,000 passengers.

MSC World America: Spring 2025

MSC's new futuristic ship – and sister ship to MSC World Europa – will be based in Miami and sail the Caribbean. The LNG-powered, 6,762-passenger ship will offer more than 420,000 square feet of public space and many of the attractions found on World Europa, such as the MSC Luna Park Arena and World Galleria. There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Allura is scheduled to debut in June 2025.

Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.
