Kashmir has four distinct seasons, each with its own peculiar character and distinctive charm. These are spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Spring, which extends roughly from March to early May, is when a million tulip blosssoms carpet the Srinagar Tulip Garden . The weather during this time can be gloriously pleasant at 23 degree Centigrade or chilly and windy at 6 degree Centigrade. This is the season when Srinagar experiences rains, but the showers are brief.

Summer extends from May until the end of August. Light woolens may be required to wear out of Srinagar. In higher altitudes night temperatures drop slightly. Srinagar at this time experiences day temperatures of between 25oC and 35oC. At this time, the whole valley is a mosaic of varying shades of green – rice fields, meadows, trees, etc. and Srinagar with its lakes and waterways is a heaven after the scorching heat of the Indian plains.

Srinagar Tourism: The capital city

Srinagar is located in the heart of the Kashmir valley at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level, spread on both sides of the river Jehlum. The Dal and Nagin lakes enhance its picturesque setting, while the changing play of the seasons and the salubrious climate ensures that the city is equally attractive to visitors around the year. Kalhana, the author of ‘Rajtarangini’, states that Srinagar was founded by Emperor Ashoka (3rd Century BC).

The present city of Srinagar was founded by Pravarasena-II, and Hiuen Tsang, who visited Kashmir in 631 AD, found it at the same site as it is today. Laltaditya Muktapida was the most illustrious ruler of Kashmir in the Hindu period, which ended in 1339 AD. King Zain-ul-Abidin (1420-70 AD), popularly known as ‘ Budshah ’, was a great patron of Sanskrit.

Akbar captured Kashmir valley for the Mughals, who endowed Srinagar with beautiful mosques and gardens. The Sikhs overthrew the last Muslim ruler in the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1819. In 1846 the Dogras secured the sovereignty of Kashmir from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, and in 1947 the state of Jammu and Kashmir with Srinagar as its capital, became part of the Indian Union.

Today Srinagar is a resort for the tourist who can experience, at first hand, the peculiar beauty of the valley that has attracted the Chinese, the Mughals and the British to it. After reaching the airport, visitors can hire taxis to reach various cities and towns of Kashmir. By road: The state of Kashmir is well connected by a network of state and private buses with several nearby cities and towns. National Highway 1-A connects Srinagar with Jammu. Also, the popular Jawahar Tunnel connecting Jammu with the valley of Kashmir also falls on the way. A number of J&K State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC), luxury and private deluxe buses ply frequently to and from state. These buses are extremely comfy and cost-effective. By train: The rail link between Srinagar and Jammu is under construction however one can reach up to Udhampur by train from there onward one can travel by road up-to Banihal from there one can board train for Srinagar, Srinagar railway station is located at Nowgam Baypass .

Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (J&KSRTC) operates special coach services between the airport and the city.

Super deluxe, A-class, B-class buses are operated by J&K SRTC as well as other transport agencies. These take approx. 11 hours to cover the journey and the cost per seat in J&K SRTC bus is From Rs 200/- to Rs. 450/ From Jammu to Srinagar. From Delhi an express coach service is available, which takes 26 hours to reach Srinagar at the cost per seat of Rs.1400/-. It is also possible to travel by taxi from Jammu to Srinagar in about 8 hours. The cost varies depending on the flow of tourists and travelers between Jammu and Srinagar and is between Rs.700/ to Rs. 1400/ per seat.

For those wishing to travel to Srinagar by a private car from Jammu, there are several places en route which have been developed for the convenience of the motorist. It was a well planned and fine executed arrangement by Vertical travels. Starting from Airport pick up , excellent car condition, to and fro 24*7 transport service. Hotel selection at Gulmarg Pehalgam, Dal house boat and City hotel were amazing with very good hospitality. House boat stay blew our mind away, one of the amazing stays in my lifetime. Zubair acted as full time support in any condition with regular checks on departures and arrivals. We never felt we were on our own. One of the memorable tours. 😊

It was indeed a pleasure travelling with Vertical Travels. The accommodations and food was nice. We were travelling with our parents who have health issues. They gave us a driver who helped us with our parents. He would bring the car right to the door so that my father did not have to walk much. They also helped with the Gondola. We recently visited Kashmir for 5 days, and had a very good experience there. Kashmir is very beautiful, people are very friendly. The itinerary was well planned, tour was well organized and expertly managed by alkof holidays. We can recommend them.

My trip, Heavenly Kashmir Tour, was made perfect, largely because of our wonderful guide, Ishfaq Ahmad Shalla. We had a problem with every room we were given. We had booked a room with two beds and were continuously only given one. He worked his expert magic each day, going above and beyond his duties to make it happen for us which was not an easy task. Iahfaq speaks English very well and along with his knowledge and love for Kashmir it was magical. He made us feel comfortable and very well taken care of. Our driver Ayub was very nice, but he was on the phone all the time (even on video chat while driving in that crazy traffic). Several times he wondered away and we had to wait until he reappeared not knowing where he was. "the tour itself was good there were times when i felt we were being rushed to leave when i would have preferred to stay longer instead of doing rug & leather demo/sales pitches at us.(Shopping was not a reason i chose this holiday) & i felt we were being used as bait for the various companies to make money.i did get sick at one point & as i only ate at provided accommodation & tour restaurant stops it was obviously from one of these places whose hygiene standards i thought was poor.communication was quite poor, & some of the published information was unclear & caused some unpleasant unnecessary issues while on tour.

1.25 Million Tourists And Counting In 2024 So Far - Kashmir To Set New Record

Officials of the local tourism department have said that over 12.5 lakh tourists have so far visited Kashmir and going by the present trend, the year 2024 is likely to break all previous records.

More than 12.5 lakh tourists (1.25 million) have visited Kashmir so far this year.

Tourist arrivals in Kashmir are set to break all previous records as more than 1.25 million tourists have already come here to date this year.

At present, all local hotels in Srinagar city, in the ski resort of Gulmarg and the hill stations of Pahalgam and Sonamarg are completely sold out till the middle of June.

"What is true of hotels in these places is also true of guest houses, homestays, houseboats on the Dal and the Nigeen Lakes and other such lodging facilities in Kashmir at the moment," said an official here.

More encouraging this year is the fact that with the improved law and order situation and the prevailing peace, foreign tourists have started coming to Kashmir in good numbers.

"We earn foreign exchange once the foreign tourists start coming to Kashmir. In addition to this, most of the foreign tourists are high-end tourists whose average spending during their stay is more than the average domestic tourists. Not that the domestic tourists do not include high-end guests. The few 5-star hotels we have in the Valley are also completely sold out these days and the majority of their guests are domestic spenders," said a member of the Hoteliers Club of Kashmir.

Normally the tourist arrivals start coming down with the beginning of the annual Amarnath Yatra due to the heavy rush of pilgrims who come for 'Darshan' at the cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level in Kashmir Himalayas.

This year, Amarnath Yatra starts on June 29 and will conclude after 52 days on August 19.

Hoteliers believe that given the number of bookings being made presently, it is unlikely that the tourist arrivals would be affected by the ensuing Amarnath Yatra.

One of the reasons for the unlikely fall in the number of tourist arrivals this year in Kashmir is the soaring temperature in the rest of the country.

"There are of course other hill stations like Shimla, Darjeeling and Nainital in the country, but they cannot match the tourist uptake capacity of Kashmir", said a local tour and travel operator who has been in business for more than four decades.

At present, tourists are mainly coming to the Valley from Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Local tour and travel operators say the tourist flow from Delhi and Punjab will start in the middle of the next month.

The tourism industry is the second main industry in Kashmir after horticulture. While horticulture is believed to generate Rs 10,000 crore for the local economy, the tourism industry is believed to pump in another Rs 8000 crore annually into the local economy.

While the earnings from horticulture are restricted to orchard owners, tourism sustains hoteliers, houseboat owners, Shikarawallahs on the Dal Lake, taxi operators, pony wallahs, tourist guides and travel operators in addition to handicraft artisans like shawl, carpet, wood carving and papier machie craftsmen.
