Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary: 5 Day Route & Trail Map

Nepal Itinerary , Trekking in Nepal / July 13, 2021 by fulltimeexplorer / 4 Comments

We chose a five day Mardi Himal Trek itinerary after consulting several friends who had done the trek. A few groups did it in three days but called it words like “difficult, brutal, and unnecessary.” The four day trek didn’t look that much better. We then talked to people who did it in six days and they described it as “too long,” so we settled on the perfect five day itinerary. I felt this length for the trek was difficult enough to keep us from being bored, but it was easy enough that the first time trekkers in our group could manage it without wanting to quit.

Mardi Himal Trek Overview

5 Days (although it can be done in as few as 3 days or as many as 7 days)

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty Level

The five day itinerary is a moderate trek. The first day is steep. The second day is difficult because it is so long. The last day requires a steep downhill which is hard on the knees. Day three and four, I found enjoyable. If you do the trek in three days, I would say it’s a very difficult trek, and if you do it in six days, it should be easy. The five day itinerary felt just right.

Required Permits

An ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permit is required for all foreigners. This cost 3,000 rupees which is less than $30 USD.

Mardi Himal Trek History

The Mardi Himal Trek formed only 10 years ago in 2010. Prior to that, this route was mostly camping grounds visited by expeditions. Some of the route was part of the original Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and later it branched off and headed towards Mardi Himal. With its epic views, it’s no surprise that within 10 years, it’s become one of the most popular short treks in all of Nepal.

Best Time to Visit Mardi Himal

Trekking season in Nepal is from March to May in the spring and late September to early December in the fall. A large chunk of this trek goes through a rhododendron forest which is breathtaking in late March and early April when all of the flowers are in bloom. If you can arrange your schedule for that time of year, it’s an added bonus. The trail is not safe in monsoon season and may be very cold with snow in winter.

Mardi Himal Height

Mardi Himal stands at 5,587 m (18,330 ft). Although it is not that tall compared to the other mountains nearby, it does sit right in front of Machhapuchhre which translated means “fish tail.” From the Mardi Himal Trek, you get epic views of this unique mountain which does in fact look like a fish tail. Standing at 6,693 m (21,958 ft) and located so close to the trekking trail, it towers above the other mountains in the distance.

Mardi Himal Base Camp Height

Mardi Himal has two base camps. The one located along the Mardi Himal Trek is considered Mardi Himal Base Camp West and is 4,500 m (14,763 ft) in altitude. Many people only go to the viewpoint located just below Base Camp. The viewpoint is situated at 4,200 m (13,779 ft).

Mardi Himal Trail Info

The Mardi Himal trail is nice with gorgeous dirt paths most of the way and stone steps installed in the places where dirt is difficult to ascend or descend. The trail runs through the jungle, rhododendron forests, and up to snowy peaks. The diversity in flora that you see in five days is amazing.

Navigating the Mardi Himal Trek Route

I always recommend inexperienced trekkers to take a guide or porter who can show you the route. If you are experienced and don’t plan to take a guide, I recommend downloading Maps.me on your phone. It’s an app which has trails marked. You can download the offline version which will show you exactly where you are and where the trail is. This came in handy a few times including our push to the viewpoint before sunrise when the snow covered trail got a bit confusing. We ended up about 20 feet below the trail and had to readjust to get back on route.

Overall, the Mardi Himal Trek route is easy to navigate. The route does split in many places and both paths usually lead to the same place, however, one path is much more difficult than the other which is why a guide is handy.

Brief Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary

Day 1 – Pokhara to Kande (by jeep) & Kande to Pittam Deurali (option to go to Lovely Hill)

Day 2 – Pittam Deurali to Low Camp

Day 3 – Low Camp to High Camp

Day 4 – High Camp to Base Camp & Base Camp to Low Camp

Day 5 – Low Camp to Sidhing & Sidhing to Pokhara (by jeep)

Detailed Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary

Day 1 – pokhara to kande to pittam deurali.

Kande Altitude: 1,770 m (5,807 ft)

Pittam Deurali Altitude: 2,100 m (6,889 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase: 330 m (1,082 ft)

Oxygen Concentration: 79% compared to 100% at sea level

Driving Time: 1 hour

Walking Time: 2 hours 10 minutes (not including lunch or tea breaks)

Difficulty Level: Difficult

The jeep ride to Kande was surprisingly quick and smooth on a newly paved road. We had hired a private jeep expecting it to be a bumpy ride. If we hadn’t had so much luggage, we easily could have taken a car. We left Pokhara at 9:40am and arrived at 10:40am.

From Kande the path goes straight up a set of stairs for about 40 minutes. The stairs are in direct sunlight and we arrived around 11am which made the hike extremely hot. I’d recommend getting there earlier. Make sure to have a sun hat and sunscreen on before you start. After reaching the top of the hill, it’s an easy walk for about 20 minutes to get to Australian Base Camp.

Since we arrived late in the day, we had lunch at Australian Base Camp at Hotel Gurans. From there, it’s a quick 20 minute walk through the woods to Pothana. This section of the trail is enjoyable as it’s mostly flat.

We had originally planned to stay in Pothana which is a cute village with lots of appeal, however, we arrived around 12pm and knew the next day would be much harder. Our guide recommended we walk to the next village of Pittam Deurali to make the next day easier.

The next leg of the journey took us only 50 minutes. The trekking trail meets a road a few times, but you can avoid the road almost completely. You’re never on it more than 20 seconds. This path has some sections that are steep, but for the most part, it’s an enjoyable and gradual uphill trek to Pittam Deurali. We arrived at Pittam Deurali at 3:00 pm but could have arrived much earlier had we left Pokhara earlier.

In Pittam Deurali, we stayed at the Nice View Lodge which had nice rooms with attached bathrooms. The hotel had been renovated recently and felt luxurious compared to other tea houses. I enjoyed our stay in Pittam Deurali and was extremely happy we didn’t stop at Pothana. The next day’s walk was long and for those who have the energy, I would recommend walking an additional one stop further on the first day. If I were to do the trek again, I would sleep in the tiny village of Lovely Hill which we passed through on day 2.

Day 2 –Pittam Deurali to Low Camp

Low Camp Altitude: 2,970 m (9,744 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase: 870 m (2,854 ft)

Oxygen Concentration: 71% compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time: 5 hours and 40 mins (not including lunch or tea breaks)

We left Pittam Deurali around 9:00am and walked to Lovely Hill where there’s a teahouse with a great view. It took us about 50 minutes to arrive, but I was walking slow and enjoying my surroundings. The walk here is simply stunning as it passes through the jungle. The trail is mostly flat with some gradual uphill climbs. I felt that we easily could have walked this section the day before, but at the time we didn’t know how long day 2 would be.

After Lovely Hill, it’s another gorgeous walk through the jungle on gradual ground. There is one section which goes uphill. It’s not too steep, but it is a long section and took us about 20 – 30 minutes to ascend. We arrived at Forest Camp around 12:30pm and had lunch at Green View Hotel.

After an hour and a half break for lunch (this is how long it typically takes for them to cook and for us to eat), we moved on. Unfortunately, it was getting late in the day, and the weather started to turn around 2:00pm in the mountains. On this day, it got cloudy, cold, windy, and started to drizzle which made the rest of the day much less enjoyable.

From Forest Camp, there’s about a 400m increase in 2 hours of walking, so you end up on a continuous uphill climb to Low Camp. This normally wouldn’t be too difficult, but we’d already been walking for 3 hours (and ascended 400m) and were eager to get to the next destination before it rained too hard. By the time we made it to Low Camp, we were all freezing and exhausted. We arrived around 4:00pm and stayed at Hotel Laligurans.

Staying at Lovely Hill the night before would have cut off almost an hour of walking on day 2 and made the day a lot easier.

High Camp Altitude : 3,540 m (11,614 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase: 570 m (1,870 ft)

Oxygen Concentration: 66% compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time: 2 hours and 35 minutes (not including lunch or tea breaks)

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Day 3 felt easy compared to day 2 despite the altitude. We left Low Camp at 9:30am. On this day, you pass through another village that has three tiers of tea houses that are spread out. This village is called Badaldada and was not shown on our map.

The trek to the first tier of Badaldada is an uphill climb. We ended up on a shortcut through the woods which was steep. There is a longer route that zig zags back and forth and is more gradual. It took us about 35 minutes to get to the first tier of the village.

The route to the second tier took us about 20 minutes. During this day, you pass through beautiful rhododendron forests. If you’re there at the end of March or beginning of April, you can witness them in full bloom. The rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. This section is also uphill, but not as steep as the first section.

Another 20 minutes of gradual uphill and we arrived at the third tier of the village which is located at an altitude of 3,310m. This top set of teahouses is higher end. You can even order a real cappuccino (although it’s expensive). We stopped here for tea. This top section offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains on a clear day.

Around this time, the trees and foliage begin to disappear and the landscape becomes more barren. About an hour and a half later, we arrived at High Camp. This last leg of the day, we walked slow as some of the group was beginning to feel the altitude. Even I was getting a little lightheaded. This section is a mix of dirt path and stone steps. It has gradual sections followed by steep staircases, but overall, I found it an extremely enjoyable walk.

After arriving at High Camp, my head felt foggy, so we opted to do an acclimation hike. The best way to avoid altitude sickness is to “climb high and sleep low.” This means that you should go up about 100m higher than you will sleep, then return to the tea house. We walked up the route to Base Camp for about 25 minutes and checked out the route we would be taking in the dark the next day. After returning, my head was clear and I felt good as new.

We stayed at High Camp Guest House. I enjoyed this tea house but would recommend choosing your room wisely. We made the mistake of picking the one in front of the bathrooms and were woken up all night by people going in and out which was not ideal when we planned to wake up at 3:00am the next morning.

Day 4 – High Camp to Base Camp to Low Camp

High Camp Altitude: 3,540 m (11,614 ft)

Base Camp Altitude: 4,500 m (14,763 ft)

Daily Altitude Increase: up 960 m (3,149 ft) to Base Camp and down 1,530 m (5,019 ft) to Low Camp

Oxygen Concentration: 59% at Base Camp compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time: 9 hours and 45 minutes (5 hours and 45 minutes to the viewpoint, 1 hour to Base Camp, 3 hours down to Low Camp) not including breakfast or tea breaks.

Difficulty Level: Difficult going to Base Camp, but easy going down.

It’s common practice to wake up at the crack of dawn when doing the final leg of your trek in Nepal. There are several reasons for this. First, visibility and views are almost always the best in the morning. Winds are also at their lowest in the morning, making it the safest time to climb at altitude. Last, I find it easier to climb in the dark because you can’t see how far away the goal is which makes it mentally much easier.

We left High Camp at 3:45, slightly behind our original scheduled departure of 3:15. There are two routes to High Camp. One is safe but long (an extra 30 minutes). The other is short but dangerous. We looked at the routes the day before on our acclimation hike, and honestly, as an avid trekker with experience, I have no idea why anyone would take the difficult route. It’s a straight uphill climb on slippery rocks with a cliff on the side that you wouldn’t survive if you fell over. Therefore, I highly recommend anyone reading this to spend an extra 30 minutes doing the safer route. It’s also worth noting that every person we met who took the difficult route regretted it afterwards.

Prior to the route splitting, there’s a fun little rock climbing section that lasts about 10 minutes. After that, the safe route goes off to the right and is an easy gradual climb uphill. When it meets the other trail, it becomes steeper, but it’s still not too bad as long as you take it slow. About halfway up, the snow became deeper and we put on our crampons to help with our footing. These were a lifesaver and made walking so easy. The hardest part of this section is the altitude which makes it harder to breathe.

The last 20 minutes before the viewpoint (4,200m) is a straight uphill climb on a steep stone staircase. This part was brutal for me, and I had to keep stopping. I was having some stomach issues and struggled a lot here. We reached the top of the staircase just as the sun was peeking over the mountains at 6:20am.

At the viewpoint, there are two small tea shops where you can rest. We talked to the tea shop owner who we had met at Low Camp, and he advised us that the snow made it dangerous to go onto Base Camp. I was already feeling sick as I had a stomachache all morning and had already decided that I’d pushed myself hard enough for one day.

Later in the day, we ended up meeting the only guy who went to Base Camp that morning, and he described it as, “Unlike anything I’ve ever done. There were points, I literally thought I’d die.” He had a professional guide with him who knew the route well. It took him about an hour to go up to Base Camp and back to the viewpoint, but they had to break trail in the snow. Locals told us we could get to Base Camp in 30 minutes (on a good day without snow) as it is not as steep as getting to the viewpoint.

We spent a lot of time at the viewpoint taking photos and having tea (about an hour and a half). Since we had crampons, we could practically jog down the mountain without slipping or sliding. We got downhill in about 1 hour and 15 minutes while people without crampons had to tread carefully and took much longer. We took a two hour break at High Camp for breakfast and then walked downhill to Low Camp.

It took us about 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the top tier of Badaldada where we stopped for some WeiWei noodles at Himalayan Majesty Hotel. We were moving at a leisurely pace after such a long morning and wanted to enjoy the epic views which made the mountains viewable all the way till 1:00pm. Since we hadn’t seen the mountains the whole trip we took hundreds of photos on the way down and kept stopping to sit and look at them.

It took another 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Low Camp. It’s a steady downhill walk with stone steps added to the areas where it’s a little steep. Most of our group has bad knees or backs despite all being in our 30’s and 40’s. Therefore, we all used trekking poles. Suraj used a back support. I used a knee and ankle support. These things helped immensely since landing on hard stone while going downhill for a few hours takes a toll.

Overall, it was a long day, but it was enjoyable! We slept at Hotel Laligurans again on the way down. I highly recommend trying their potato curry with fresh cilantro and onion on top served with Tibetan Bread! It was the best thing I ate on the entire trek.

Day 5 – Low Camp to Sidhing to Pokhara

Sidhing Altitude: 1,700 m (5,577 ft)

Daily Altitude Decrease: 1,270 m (4,166 ft)

Oxygen Concentration: 87% compared to 100% at sea level

Walking Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes (not including lunch or tea breaks)

Driving Time: 2 hours

Difficulty Level: Easy but if you have bad knees this day will be difficult

There are two options for Day 5. You can do a gradual but long downhill walk to Kande which takes about 5 hours and is the same route you took uphill. From Kande, you take a one hour car ride to Pokhara on a paved road. This way is cheaper for those on a budget as the car to Kande is less expensive than option number two.

The second option is shorter but steeper. You walk 2 hours and 30 mins on a steep downhill which is hard on the knees. This path was extremely dusty and gave me awful allergies. I had to walk ahead of everyone to avoid dust being kicked up, and had to wear a face mask. This route takes you to Sidhing where local jeeps can drive you to Pokhara or you can hire a private jeep to pick you up. The local jeeps sometimes squeeze too many people in, don’t have seat belts, and drive recklessly. We hired a private jeep despite the added cost.

The drive from Sidhing to Pokhara is about 2 hours and is more adventurous than the trek. It’s 30 minutes of driving on a dust road with giant rocks. There are a lot of cut back turns and a cliff on one side. The road is only wide enough for one car, and luckily, we never ran into anyone going the other direction. After the initial 30 minutes of madness, it’s another 20 minutes on a not so bad road followed by an hour on a good road.

After taking a poll, we all agreed that we would have rather walked the extra two hours in the gorgeous woods than take the jeep on the scary road. That being said, we didn’t walk the other way, and there may have been different difficulties that way as well. At the very least, I would recommend walking past Sidhing another 45 minutes and having the jeep pick you up further down the road to avoid the dangerous section.

Thanks for this. Hoping to do it again with a friend in March ’24. I last did it about 5 years ago in March. We could not get more that a couple of hundred metres beyond High Camp due to very deep snow, and there had been a death beyond High Camp so my guide said ‘no’. I’m experienced enough not to argue. I found the hardest part was the descent from Low Camp to Sidhing, my 70 + knees suffered. There was no respite on that descent. Thanks for the data for each day. That’s going to help plan properly for our next trip. I think we just stopped when we were tired last time and we ended up on a 6 day itinerary. Done 9 treks in Nepal love the place. Only Covid stopped me getting back there over the last 5 years. Thank you.

I’m so happy you found the article helpful. We were able to get past High Camp to the view point, however, we weren’t able to reach Base Camp either due to snow. I believe since that death, they’ve created a longer but safer route to the view point. We chose not to do the shortcut which was slippery and had a cliff on one side. So, it should be safer to get to Base Camp/the view point this time.

The charge of the vehicle mostly depends on the season, the number of people, and your negotiating skills. It usually costs around US$ 9 to 10  per person for 5 to 9 people.

6 Days Mardi Himal Trek Outline Itinerary

Mardi himal trek detailed 6 days itinerary, day 1: drive from pokhara (900m) to kande (1,770m) and trek to deurali (2,200m).

Deurali

Your adventure to Mardi Himal Trek begins with an hour-long drive from Pokhara to Kande. Upon reaching Kande, you’ll start trekking uphill towards the beautiful hamlet of Australian Camp. On a clear day, Australian Camp offers a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu.

After enjoying your time at the Australian Camp, you walk for another two hours on a pleasant trail to reach Deurali.

Day 2: Trek from Deurali (2,200m) to Low Camp (2,900m)

Low Camp Mardi Himal

Today, you leave the crowded trails of Annapurna Sanctuary behind and take a solitary path towards the Forest Camp. The dense forest of rhododendron, maple, oak, and hemlock surrounds the entire trail. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach the Forest Camp.

The trail continues through the forest area. However, the vegetation varies as rhododendron trees become densely populated in this area. Ferns, lichens, and moss cover the trees dominantly. You’ll reach Low Camp late in the afternoon.

Day 3: Trek from Low Camp (2,900m) to High Camp (3,585m)

High Camp Mardi Himal

The trek continues gradually uphill into the rhododendron forests towards the Middle Camp, and then to Badal Danda. Badal Danda offers a marvelous sight of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Machhapuchhre, and Mardi Himal.

After walking for another hour above Badal Danda, the trail leaves the treeline behind. Mountain view of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli accompanies the path towards the west. The trail keeps on along the ridge covered with grasses and bushes until the High Camp.

There are a few lodges at the High Camp, and the view from the lodge points to Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli visible on a clear day.

Day 4: Hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) and Trek to High Camp (3,585m)

Mardi Himal Base Camp

The day begins walking on a steep climb through the ridge towards Mardi Himal Base Camp. Since the trail is rocky, uneven and slippery, this section is the most tricky and challenging part of the trek.

Along the way, the fantastic views of Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre start unfolding in the backdrop. The trail passes through the pasture lands, then leads to the narrow ridges before reaching the Upper Viewpoint, and then to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. The mountain scenery from the base camp is exceptional.

After spending some time at the base camp, you retrace your route back to the High Camp.

Day 5: Trek from High Camp (3,585m) to Siding Village (1,750m)

From the High Camp, you’ll retrace the route until Low Camp, then take a different path that leads to Siding village. Most of the trail on this day is gradual downhill under the shades of dense forests.

Siding is a traditional Gurung village with a quiet and ambient atmosphere. The settlement is less busy even during the peak trekking seasons.

Day 6: Drive from Siding Village (1,750m) to Pokhara (900m)

Pokhara

On the final day of the adventure, you’ll hire a jeep and drive to Pokhara. You can also trek to Lumre and then hire a vehicle if you want to hike on the final day.

The road is graveled and rough from Siding until you reach the highway. It takes about 2-3 hours from Siding to reach Pokhara.

Best Time to Travel to Mardi Himal

Best Time to Travel to Mardi Himal

Unlike most of the treks in Nepal, trekking to Mardi Himal is possible throughout the year. However, Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May) are two most favorable seasons to trek to Mardi Himal.

The temperature in Autumn is usually moderate and stable with a clear sky, which means the scenery of the mountains and landscapes is incredible throughout the trek. You also get to relish an exceptional sunrise and sunset during this period. However, the trekking trail is slightly more crowded in Autumn.

Spring is considered the second-best time for trekking in Nepal. The temperature is a bit warmer and stable during this time of the year. However, the sky can be slightly vague and hazy at times, which means the scenery may not be as exceptional as the Autumn.

Winter brings cold and harsh weather, especially at the higher elevations. Most of the time, snow covers the upper reaches of the trail. Therefore, in case of excessive snow, the trails may be more challenging to walk. However, the skies are unclouded and rewarding with magnificent sights. If you’re planning to trek to Mardi Himal during the winter, make sure to pack warm clothes and high-quality sleeping bags.

Monsoon is the least favorable time to go trekking in Mardi Himal. The temperature and weather are far too unstable with wet and slippery trails. Since dense forests dominate this region, the risk of leeches increases extensively. Trekking in monsoon demands proper preparation and packing for the wet weather.

Here’s a table indicating the details of average temperature and rainfall of different places en-route to Mardi Himal Trek:

How Difficult is Mardi Himal Trek?

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively shorter and moderate trek that does not demand any technical skills. Lush green forests dominate the lower region of the trek while the trail in upper levels becomes slightly rough with naked and rocky terrains.

The most challenging section of this trek is to hike from the High Camp to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. The route becomes much steeper and slippery on this day. However, most of the trek is comfortable for an enjoyable and pleasant walk.

The entire trek covers roughly 50-65km depending upon which itinerary you choose. You can complete the trek from 5 to 8 days averaging 5 to 6 hours of a daily walk. The risk of Acute Mountain Sickness is minimum as the highest elevation point of this trek stands 4,500m at the Mardi Himal Base Camp. However, it is essential to stay hydrated and take the necessary precautions to prevent altitude sickness.

Since the weather conditions of the mountains change quickly, it is vital to pack all the essential gear for the trek. It is better to invest in high-quality waterproof boots and carry all the essentials for cold and wet weather.

Although experienced trekkers consider this Mardi Himal as an easy trek, it demands a certain level of physical fitness. You do not have to be an athlete to trek in this region, but we recommend you to do the necessary preparation, and cardio-related workout.

Mardi Himal Trek is an ideal destination for novice trekkers who are keen to experience the Himalayan adventure.

What Permits are Required for Mardi Himal Trekking?

Mardi Himal Trekking Permits

While trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp, you will require two different permits — TIMS Card (Trekking Information Management System) and the ACAP permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project). You do not need any other special authorization to enter this area.

If you’re trekking with an authorized trekking company, they will take care of this hassle for you. However, if you’re planning to travel individually, you can acquire both of these permits from Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu as well as in Pokhara.

To acquire the TIMS Card and ACAP permits, you’ll require your passport, insurance details, four passport size photos, and contact details of a person in Nepal. If you do not have printed photos, you can take one at the office free of charge.

To receive the TIMS Card:

  • You must first fill up the form you get from the counter of the Tourist Information Center in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
  • Take a photo, if you haven’t brought it with you. You can take a photograph in the office without any charge.
  • Submit the filled out form along with two passport size photos and NPR. 2000/$18 per person to the counter. Remember they only accept Nepalese Rupees, so make sure to exchange your dollars to NPR.
  • Finally, get your TIMS Card.

To receive the ACAP Permit:

  • After receiving your TIMS Card, walk to the next door, and get another form.
  • Fill the necessary details in the form.

  • Get your ACAP Permit.

As of 2018, the province of Gandaki announced to charge a levy of US$10 per tourists to enter the area. But, it has not come into effect till now. However, it is handy to keep this in mind as it may be practiced any day.

Insurance for the Trek

It is essential to have travel insurance while trekking in the high Himalayas. The circumstances at such high elevation are unpredictable. Therefore, we highly recommend you to get the travel insurance for Mardi Himal Trek.

Make sure your insurance comprises all the essential costs like helicopter rescue, medical charges, natural disasters, trip cancelation, and theft. Since there is no reliable insurance company in Nepal, we recommend you to do it from World Nomads.

Guided VS Independent Trek

Mardi Himal Trek

It is possible to do the Mardi Himal Trek both independently or with a guide. Despite being less commercial trekking route in the Annapurna region, the entire trail to Mardi Himal is well-marked with blue and white stripes. Additionally, the trek is relatively short and less challenging compared to other popular treks.

So, if you’re willing to trek solo in the Himalayas of Nepal, Mardi Himal is an ideal option for you. However, it is essential to have prior experience to do the trek independently. Trekking independently is comparatively cheaper than hiring a guide, but it also means you’ll have to tackle all the hassles by yourself.

Having an experienced guide can come in handy while trekking at high altitudes. Although hiring a guide may add your expense slightly, it is far safer than traveling solo. The guide will assist you throughout the entire trail and provide detailed insights into the place. If you hire a guide, you do not have to worry about the hassles. The guide will take care of the bus, jeep, permits, and hotels for the trip.

Accommodation and Food

Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek was widely popular among the campers for over a decade. The trek officially opened in 2012 with teahouse services throughout the entire trail.

Teahouses along the  Mardi Himal Trek have necessary facilities or minimal amenities and services. Most of the rooms consist of two single beds with thin mattresses and do not provide the attached toilet. The toilets are mostly shared, and running hot water is not available throughout the trek. However, some teahouses offer buckets of warm water with an additional charge. If you like, you can have it.

Although the teahouses do not offer a variety of food choices as other commercial treks do, they provide enough menu to have well. One impressive thing about the food in this trek is that the locals themselves produce the majority of the crops.

Dal Bhat is the most common meal, followed by pancakes, pasta, and chop suey. Since you’ll be burning a lot of calories while trekking, Dal Bhat is healthy and filled with proper calories to keep you going. Chocolate bars and treats are also widely available throughout the route. It is important to remember that the foods are more expensive in the higher reaches of the trek.

For extra amenities like hot showers, boiled water, wifi, and charging services, most of the teahouses charge you an additional amount.

It is important to remember that cell phone services may not be consistent in all parts of the region. You may have to wander around to find decent network coverage in some remote villages.

Mobile internet services are not pretty stable and reliable due to inconsistent network coverage. But when the networks are decent, you can use the 3G services in both NTC and Ncell.

The majority of teahouses also provide WiFi services, but they might charge you a few extra bucks for it. WiFi is the most preferred way to stay connected with your friends and family despite the high number of users. In this case, the connection can get slower.

What is the Best Time For Mardi Himal Trek?

Like any other Nepali Himalayan Trek, the best season for this trek is also the Spring Season(Mid-February to May) and the Autumn Season(September to mid-December) .  However, the more isolated and pristine trek would be possible during the Summer Season as many trekkers don’t want to deal with rainfall and leeches .

Monsoon view of Mardi Himal and surround greenery, clicked by North Nepal Trek.

The Spring season brings moderate temperatures ranging from 11 to 20 degrees Celsius at the lower altitudes and it may be cooler in higher altitudes . The clear skies provide excellent visibility for mountain views and the blooming rhododendrons throughout the trek adorn the path with vibrant hues of red and pink. Even during the peak season of Spring, the Mardi Himal Trek will not be as crowded as the other treks like Annapurna Base Camp Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek.

Furthermore, during the Spring season  even the lower altitude of the Mardi Himal Trek is covered with snow, so you get the feeling of climbing the mountain itself, in this trek. Additionally, due to clear weather the sunrise views during this trek, as the sunrises over the Mardi Himal truly create an awe-inspiring sight.

During the Autumn season , the temperature ranges from 8 to 15 degrees making trekking more comfortable. Due to the stable weather suitable for both trekking and observing the views, this season is considered the best overall season for trekking in Nepal, not just for the Mardi Himal Trek but for the other treks of the Himalayan Region. The clear weather with minimal rainfall offers you stunning mountain views of Annapurna and Machhapuchere and many other mountains which is truly a sight to behold. The trail may be more crowded than during the spring seasons but it’s not as crowded as other treks in the Nepalese Himalayas.  The Summer season brings rainfall which hinders the trek routes as it makes it more slippery, with roaming leeches in the path making the trek more challenging. Many trekkers avoid treks during the Summer season but some experienced trekkers go for an adrenaline pumping adventure, for sceneries that can only be experienced in Summer Season . The trek also rewards these courageous trekkers with lush greenery and wildflowers that bloom only during the summer season offering a mesmerizing view, only experienced by those, who dare to complete this trek in the summer season.

Overall, we can conclude that this place has very satisfying facilities for food and lodging.

2: Is this trek possible with children? With good food and accommodation, the safety of the children is almost guaranteed. Also, altitude sickness rarely occurs so, with minimal extra care and effort we can complete this expedition.

3: Do I need any permits for this trek? Yes, you must have an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) permit which costs US$ 30 per person. The officials will check your permit and other necessary documents at the entry point.  Similarly, this permit lasts until you leave Annapurna Area.

4: Can we connect this trek with other routes? Yes, we combine this route with Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Poon Hill Sunrise Trek, and Khopra Ridge Trek. All the mentioned treks are some of the most popular treks among trekkers in the Annapurna region.

5: Who am I gonna trek with? Solo traveling is very risky in the high Himalayas so, all the agencies will hand over you to a guide and porters if necessary to supervise and navigate your expedition. Guides usually have comprehensive knowledge of all the available trails and have good contact with locals. Also, they are equipped with first-aid kits and medicines for commonly occurring diseases, in addition to that, they can contact the respective officials required during emergency cases. Moreover, the guides bear the responsibility of keeping their trekkers safe throughout the journey. It is mandatory to travel with a guide or in groups for safety purposes. Most importantly, we need someone to take care of us during emergency accidents, altitude sickness, and injuries.

Beautiful Mardi Himal trek

I did a five day trek to Mardi Himal together with guide Jun. Great guide; very cordial and knowledgeable about the area. North Nepal Travel and Treks provided excellent, personal service. All was organised smoothly and flexibly. Excellent experience.

Track to Mardi Himal

Our track to Mardi Himal passed just great! Our guide - B Peen did everything so that we would get a lot of pleasures and memories. Very experienced and enjoyable guide. And of course, a great photographer, as he captured all the bright moments from our trip.

Great agency in Pokhara!!

Thank you for all the help Mohan and Jun!!

Mardi Himal Trek

We recently did a 4 day trek to Mardi Himal base camp with north Nepal. The services of North Nepal far exceeded our expectations. Balram was an amazing guide - very caring and always so upbeat!! After having gone on multiple treks with several other trek operators, I feel the experience with north Nepal was the best so far. We are looking forward to doing our next trek with them very soon!

Fantastic experience overall!

I did two treks with B Peen in November 2021 (Kopra Ridge and Mardi Himal). The experience could not have been better from start to finish! Moane (the owner) spent a lot of time carefully designing the route based on my interests and the weather forecast. Then I was superbly guided by B Peen. He clearly loves guiding tourists and knows everything and everyone in the region. We had the most friendly welcome in each logde thanks to B Peen friendly and super positive demeanor! At the end of my trip, Moane also booked air tickets back to Kathmandu for me at a significant discount vs. internet prices. Highly highly recommended! Thanks for everything guys!

Super adventure thanks to North Nepal Travels!

Fewer trekkers will pass you on the trail, allowing you to take in the area's natural splendor quietly. The journey offers an opportunity to reconnect with nature and achieve inner serenity while providing the ideal break from the rush and bustle of city life.

The immaculate Mardi Himal Base Camp is one of the area's hidden gems that may be found during the Mardi Himal Trek. Trekkers frequently travel to the base camp because it has beautiful views of the peaks. The High Camp, which offers sweeping views of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre, is another highlight of the trek. The snow-covered peaks surrounding the camp provide a beautiful perspective of the Himalayas.

Rhododendron forests, abundant throughout the spring, are a draw to the Mardi Himal Trek. With brilliant red, pink, and white flowers covering the entire area, the forests are a riot of color. Other animals in the woodlands include monkeys, deer, and the endangered Himalayan black bear. The rhododendrons' pleasant scent and the birds chirping will surround you as you walk through the trees.

Some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the Himalayas may be found on the Mardi Himal Trek. The trek offers a singular view of the Annapurna range, leading you through some of the area's most solitary and steep terrains. • Awe-inspiring mountain sunrises will greet you in the morning, and a romantic sunset over the valley will mark the conclusion of the day.
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of areas with little pollution or human interference.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek:

The spring months of March to May and the autumn months of September to November are the ideal times to commence the Mardi Himal Trek. These months offer the best trekking weather because they are clear and consistent.

  • Rhododendron woods burst into life in the spring, generating a magnificent display of color that brings the area to life. The trip is made more bearable by the temperate temperatures and the clear skies, which provide stunning vistas of the mountain summits.
  • Another well-liked season for the Mardi Himal trek is the autumn when the weather is good, and the skies are clear. The area is breathtaking because of the region's natural beauty, enhanced by the vibrant autumn leaves.
  • The monsoon season, which lasts from June to August, is not the best time to go trekking because of the risk of landslides and excessive rain, which makes the trail treacherous and slick. The hard path and severe snowfall during the winter months of December to February make these months unsuitable for trekking.

Plan your trip at the optimal time to hike in the Mardi Himal region if you want a genuinely unforgettable trekking experience. Prepare to be enthralled by nature's beauty and make lifelong memories!

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty:

A modest trek that offers a unique fusion of adventure and tranquility is the Mardi Himal Trek. The trail poses several challenges that trekkers should be aware of, even if it is easier than other Himalayan treks, which are as follows:

  • Up to 4,500 meters of elevation gain can be found on the trail. Altitude sickness, which manifests as headache, nausea, and exhaustion, may result from this.
  • The trek has challenging terrain, rocky roads, and steep inclines. Therefore, it's necessary to be physically fit and wear strong shoes.
  • The trail can become treacherous and challenging due to sudden snowfall and rain storms that can occur suddenly in the Himalayas.
  • With few facilities and conveniences, the walk includes staying in teahouses or camping. Trekkers should be equipped for simple living.

Despite these challenges, the Mardi Himal Trek is a life-changing adventure that allows you to test your limitations and appreciate the Himalayas' natural splendor. So accept the difficulties, engage in the adventure, and enjoy the breathtaking mountain views and exposure to the local culture!

The Mardi Himal Trek offers a singular fusion of excitement and tranquility with its spectacular mountain panoramas, varied landscapes, and cultural immersion. This walk is ideal for those who enjoy the outdoors, are looking for adventure, or want to escape the city. The trail can be challenging because of the height rise, the rough terrain, and the bad weather, but it is a task that is well worth taking on. The ideal seasons for trekking are spring and fall, when hikers may take advantage of clear skies, comfortable weather, and breathtaking displays of color.

Are you prepared for an exciting journey deep into the Himalayas? Join the Mardi Himal Trek today to enjoy a journey that will motivate, test, and reward you.

Mardi Himal Trek Details

Mardi Himal Trek is a short, moderate type, newly open trek in Annapurna region. This area nestled deep in the vicinity of wilderness in the west is filled with amusement. Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp begins from  1770 meters at Kande and reaches the towering height of 4500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. As a newly opened trekking destination of the west, Mardi Trek is slowly gaining attention of the trekkers from around the world. Along the trail to Mardi lies the enigma of wilderness, raging rivers, lush deep forests, towering mountains, and natural trails.

The Mardi Himal Trek Route begins from the bustling city of Pokhara in the west. From hereafter, we take a short ride to the north-western village of Kande located on the Baglung-Pokhara highway. Our initial stretch of the trek initiates from Kande traversing via a rural setup towards Australian Camp . It then follows across the wondrous trail towards Pritam Deurali. This stretch of the trek is easygoing and passes via rural villages located in and around Pitam Deurali.

As the trail heads further from Pitam Deurali , it entails a series of Rhododendron forests. We traverse deep into these forests scattered all along the trail. This section of the trail is filled with Sub-tropical forests that include varieties of flora including Juniper, Bamboo, Birch, Oak, and Fir. These spaces are home to over 500 species of different birds including Himalayan Monal, Blood Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant, Rufous Sibia, Spotted Forktail, Himalayan whistling thrush, White-collared blackbird, and others. You would be amazed to gaze at the biodiversity spread across the terrain.

Our trek takes us through small hamlets located in Forest camp or Kokar  which is located in an isolated area surrounded by lush greenery. Depending on your Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary, your stopover will be selected as a forest camp 2600m located at a duration of 3 hours from Pitam Deurali. Then onward, we travel across these dense forests and elevate for a while to reach Low Camp . As you ascend to 2970 meters at Low camp, the dense forests turn to widespread grassland. The low camp sits as a small hamlet with various teahouses running. You will have the first glimpse of Mardi Himal, Mt.Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli from Low Camp.

The final stretch of 4 Days Mardi Himal Trek inclines steeply from 2970 meters at Low Camp to the final stopover, Badal Danda and High Camp or Kew at 3600 meters. The spatial distribution variates enormously as you make this ascent. During this traverse, the dense forest turns into a shady barren landscape. The subtropical vegetation turns into Lowe-Alpine topography. The dense Rhododendron forest now turns to alpine meadows. Also, you are now in the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) prone zone as the mark of 3000 is crossed. The astounding vista of Annapurna massifs welcomes you as you reach High Camp. High Camp in Mardi Trek is a small yet picturesque settlement bestowing surreal views of the Annapurna mountains. This space is the final stopover of Mardi Himal Trekking.

After one night stopover here we take an early morning hike to Lower View Point , Upper View Point and finally at Mardi Himal Base Camp . The base camp is located at 4500 meters and entails a steep hike via rocky ridges of the mountains. The early sunrise view from the base camp is to die for. You get to see the shimmering mountains dyed golden, red, and lofty white as the sun shines over them. This viewpoint is popular for its picturesque gaze of the western face of Mt.Fishtail. Alongside, you will have a far-reaching view of the surrounding Annapurna massifs.

Your return journey retraces the same trail descending from High Camp. Badal Danda  3300 meters  is situated as a midpoint between Low Camp and High Camp. This stop provides panoramic views of Annapurna massifs with alluring vistas all over. The sunrise as seen from here is astounding. We take a shortcut from Badal Danda diverging steeply downwards. After 4-5 hours of traverse we reach the village located at the base of Badal Danda called Sidhing. Our vehicle will take us back to Pokhara from Sidhing marking the end of our journey.

The landscape surrounding us transforms into barren and semi-arid terrain. Though this stretch presents several steep climbs, the breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas make it all worthwhile. As you approach High camp, you will feel the effects of altitude taking hold. Be prepared to navigate numerous narrow ridges along your way. Finally, we arrive at High Camp where we will spend the night before continuing our expedition.

Day 3 Hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp and trek down to Badal Danda

Hike to mardi himal base camp and trek down to badal danda.

3300m, Badal Danda 14km, 6-7 hours walk B,L,D Lodge

The final phase of the Mardi Himal trek commences with an early morning wake-up call. We embark on a journey to the Mardi Himal Base Camp in the wee hours to witness the breathtaking sunrise. The ascent to the Lower viewpoint takes approximately two hours, and it is not without its challenges. The trail consists of rocky terrain that can be slippery, and you must navigate narrow paths along rocky ridges of the mountain. As you venture beyond 4000 meters in elevation, you will feel a noticeable change in altitude. However, upon reaching the base camp, you will be rewarded with a heavenly ambiance unlike any other. The base camp offers a mesmerizing panorama of Annapurna's majestic peaks. Many consider this spot to offer one of their most unforgettable views during sunrise. After spending some time at the base camp, we descend towards Badal Danda for our accommodation.

Day 4 Badal Danda - Siding- Pokhara

Badal danda - siding- pokhara.

830m, Pokhara 5.6km, 4-5 hours walk, 2 hours drive B,L

Today marks the commencement of our descent from the Mardi Himal trek. We will retrace our steps on the same path we took during our ascent. The journey is relatively straightforward, as we gradually make our way down until we reach Badal Danda. From there, our trail veers off towards Sidhing, guiding us through dense jungles nestled at the foothills of Mt.Machhapuchhre. The descent becomes steeper and more challenging, with a trail that proves to be quite slippery. After approximately five hours of hiking, we finally arrived in Sidhing and proceeded to board a jeep that would transport us back to Pokhara. Your overnight stay will be at own Hotel in Pokhara.

Fly to Kathmandu

If you want to fly to Kathmandu, our guide will drop off you at the Pokhara airport and fly back to Kathmandu.

Amazing & Unforgettable Experience

Just finished my Mardi Himal Trek for 5D4N last week with 2 of my friends and it was an amazing and unforgetable experience with generous support from Harka, Jay (guide) & Umesh (porter) from Himalaya Trip. I enjoyed so much the trails eventhough we had to pass so many steep stairs up and down which seemly never ending but with continous support from Jay our guide and pampered by the beauty of Himalaya’s landscape and peaceful ambience of the forest during the walk so we could passed it safely and happily. Everyday we had different beautiful and interesting view. We were so lucky at the Highcamp we could be the witness of the magical beauty of Annapurna South & Marchapurche that we could see so clear under the stars and full moon at night which that’s my favourite moment that I won’t forget. The next day, on the way to View Point, I and one of my friend were having light mountain sickness but once again with assistance and support from Jay, he with his professional experience ensured us how to manage this issue so calm and finally we made it to View Point and greeted with an extraordinary and increadible view of Annapurna South & Marchapurche that we could see so close. Goshh, I got goosebump and speechless. Overall I really appreciated and give credit for the great assistance from Himalaya Trip starting from Harka that always help and answer my questions with patience eventhough unexpected date changing at very last minutes, outstanding guidance from Jay for his patience and continuous support for giving us the best experience during the trekking, and Umesh who assist us to carry our stuffs. I feel like having a little family. Once again thank you Himalaya Trip for giving us best experience.

Epic Solo trek with Guide Porter

Just completed an incredible Solo Mardi Himal Trekking. Undoubtedly it was one of the best experiences of my life and unforgettable too. Despite its immense physical and mental challenges, the 5-day trek was fully worth it. Great deal with Himalaya Trip at reasonable prices. The company of friendly porter guide Sandeep, and his warm hospitality and attention to detail were impressive. Cherry on the top was breathtaking views, what more could I ask for? I am certain, I’ll be going through for next treks with them in the future.

Mardi Trek in July with Jay

My family, friends and I, just finished the Mardi Himal trek from 11th to 15th July. Unfortunately the weather was not favorable but the organization was excellent. Mr Harka Gurung also organized the transfer from Katmandu to Pokhara by jeep, the road is not the best but it gave the possibility to see a piece of Nepal. Our guide Mr Jay was amazing, attentive to our needs and kept us entertained. We can say that we have found a friend. If we go back to Nepal we will definitely turn to Himalaya Trip. Amazing trip, with amazing views, and amazing Nepali people

Amazing trip, with amazing views, and amazing Nepali people! Long hours of daily trekking, in the vicinity of simple small hotels, far away from civilization but the relaxing ambiance and fresh foods sum up our amazing experience. Nice warm weather during the days, chilly weather (almost 4 degrees) during nights, and

an unexpected blizzard on High Camp forced us to descend. An unforgettable experience descending 1700m down with snowing and raining, and getting wet. A fresh getaway and a "cut-off" from the daily rush for a workaholic like me was refreshing. Mardi Himal Trek is for those who wish to be close to nature, need a break from a hectic life, feel freedom, and are open to any new experience in the lap of the Himalayas. :) Ps - Big thanks to Jay, he was always close, always helpful and we felt always safe. PT

What a great trekking experience!

Fair Prices, Great Reviews, The Himalaya Trip was our choice for the Mardi Himal Trek. And we don’t regret it as everything was smoothly arranged by Harka, the owner of the organization. Also great information beforehand on what to expect, what to and not to do, and the use of gears which were fruitful.

Lucky and Glad to have Babu as our guide as he was a caring, interesting conversational partner, and extremely committed travel companion. Always concerned about our well-being and health. With him, we felt secure and well-cared for even at a high altitude. Babu is a very experienced guide and well-versed in the region. He took us to the best tea houses, and the best routes, and also shared many interesting details about life and hiking in the high mountains. Without worries, we were able to enjoy our trek.

Mardi Himal Travel Info

As a short trek in Nepal, the duration of the Mardi Himal trek ranges from 4-6 days depending on your starting point and itinerary. Many lengthened itineraries traverse to various villages. On that note, if you start from Kathmandu, your trip days will be increased by 2 more days for transportation. Himalaya trip has the perfectly crafted 4 day Mardi Himal Trek starting from Pokhara. If you want to start from Kathmandu, we can make arrangements accordingly. Please inquire us with your requirements for further information.

Communication

The trail to Mardi Himal Base Camp makes its way through the dense forests of ACAP. There are numerous tea houses built along the trail for accommodation facilities. The trail for the most part navigates through deep gorges and rocky ridges of high hills. Cellular facilities in these areas while available can be disturbed most of the time. While there might be voice call facilities, data connection can be an issue during the trek. Tea Houses in Mardi Himal Trek have wifi facilities available. However, you will have to pay extra ($1-$2 per day) for access.

Mardi Trek is relatively moderate compared to other Annapurna trekking in Nepal and Everest Base Camp Trek . The elevation range, availability of teahouses, technicality of the trail, and amount of crowd make this trek perfect for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. That being said, the trail after you cross Low Camp is arduous. The steep and narrow rocky paths begin after you traverse through Low Camp. The stretch from there to High Camp is risky and needs careful navigation. Also, as you hike from High Camp towards Mardi Base Camp, it is an AMS-prone zone with an elevation reaching 4500 meters. During the winter, this section is filled with snow making it difficult to traverse. In a nutshell, if done with a professional trekking agency, Mardi Himal Trek can be a comfortable and mesmerizing trekking experience for all kinds of trekkers.

Nepal boasts a diverse weather pattern throughout the year with 4 major ones: Spring(March - May) , Autumn(September- December), Winter(December- February), and Summer(June-August). The Spring months bring out the best in Nepalese highlands. The temperature is mild with crystal clear weather which is perfect for trekking in Nepal. Another best time for a trek to Mardi is during the Autumn. With a similar pattern of weather and temperature range like Spring, Autumn months provide the best views of the Himalayas. Your

The Mardi Himal trek cost depends on the time of the year chosen for the trek. Autumn and Spring months being the best time, receives a huge number of trekkers from all over the world. Prices of lodging and transportation facilities skyrocket during these times. Make sure to book your seats in advance for a comfortable trekking experience. Summer months in Nepal are filled with heavy rainfalls all across. Winter months receive heavy snowfall which makes trekking to mountainous areas arduous. If you trek during Summer and Winter, the trail is less crowded with tea houses almost empty for most months.

Meals while Trekking Mardi Himal

Nepalese tea houses serve a diverse range of cuisine options for trekkers. Meals during the Mardi Himal Trek range from several international dishes to the popular Nepalese dish “Daal Bhaat”. Daal Bhaat is a full-course meal preferred by most trekkers. It includes Rice, Lentil, Soup, Veg curry, and pickle which carries adequate nutrients and supplies for trekking days.

Alternatively, you can choose to savor other dishes like Noodles, Mashed Potatoes, French Fries, Pies, Pasta, Cutlets, and others. The tea houses along the trail also provide a range of beverages like juices, yak milk, curd, and other dairy items. If you have a special meal preference, we can arrange it if informed in advance. Our all-inclusive packages include 3 meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner as a standard practice.

Accommodation

Mardi Himal Trek Accommodation is in rural houses that provide basic lodging facilities. These houses are called teahouses in Nepal, popularly known as mountain lodges in the Alps. Tea house accommodation includes wooden structured houses with small rooms with basic amenities. Our teahouses in Mardi Trek provide at least two twin beds per room. There are other types of rooms suited for group travelers. Usually, these rooms can accommodate up to 2,3 and 4 pax. Attached bathrooms are not available at every stop and are subject to availability. The beds have foam mattresses and you will be provided with a quilt and pillow. Sleeping bags are optional for you to carry

Teahouses are operated by the locals of the area and include a dining space and kitchen on the ground floor. The dining area has a central log-fire heating system. Power sockets are provided in the rooms in Pritam Deurali. However, as you trek above Pritam Deurali, power outlets are available in the dining area only. The only power source in these areas is a solar panel. This limits the power supply in the higher areas beyond Pritam Deurali. There are Wi-Fi facilities available but for extra charges ($1-$2) per day. Hot showers are available for extra costs too.

Mardi Himal Trek along with all the stops in between the Pothana is encapsulated in the Annapurna Conservation Area Project(ACAP). This project is aimed at conserving the varied flora and fauna found in the region. You will need an ACAP permit for traversing in this area.

ACAP permit costs:

For foreigners: Nrs. 3000 (Approx. $30) For SAARC Nationals: Nrs. 1000 (Approx.$10)

TIMS Card costs:

For foreigners: Nrs. 2000 (Approx. $20) For SAARC Nationals: Nrs. 1000 (Approx.$10)

Apart from the ACAP permit, a TIMS card needs to be obtained for Mardi Himal Trekking. TIMS stands for Trekkers Information Management System. This card is vital to locate the trekkers during their travel. Security personnel will retrieve information from TIMS cards about your identity and whereabouts. Both of these permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Your trekking agent can guide you in obtaining these permits.

Preparation and fitness

Mardi Himal Trek elevation ranges from 2000 meters and elevates up to 4500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. The altitudinal variation of this trek makes it moderately challenging. One must be mentally and physically prepared to make this traverse. Our trek demands 5-7 hours of walking on a muddy and rocky terrain every day. Additionally, we will have to stay at the elevation mark beyond 3000 meters for 2 days.

It is recommended that you start your fitness training at least 1 month before the travel date. We suggest you focus on Cardio exercises: (Cycling, TreadMill, Jogging, Hiking) for boosting stamina and lung capacity. Furthermore, endurance training like weight lifting, sprinting, and others can help in muscle strengthening which is paramount for this traverse. The difficulty of Mardi Himal Trek is dependent on the fitness level of an individual. It could be arduous for a beginner trekker while an easygoing traverse for some with experience. It is always better to be in perfect shape for a comfortable trekking experience.

Useful Info

Mardi himal trek, trip summary.

Mardi Himal Trek is a fabulous mountain walking holiday trip in the Annapurna Himalaya region of Nepal located just east of one of the most legendary trekking destinations of Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp. Mardi Himal trek is like a delightful jewel for Himalaya walking passionates. Few trekkers used to make their way to the Mardi Himal just a few years before but the route gained its popularity shortly as it provides an outstandingly one-week-long trekking holiday trip to the base of the Peak of Mardi Himal. The journey to its most iconic mount Machapuchhre meaning "Fishtail" is peace of cake and everyone walking along its route can enjoy and rejoice. The trail goes along small winding paths, through enchanted rhododendron forests until you climb out of the forest at a height of around 3,300 meters. The scenery changes quite dramatically into a rugged towering peak and landscape, with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. From High Camp (3700m; some maps incorrectly mention 3900 m), you can ascend to Mardi Himal Base Camp in about 3-4 hours, which offers spectacular close-up views of the complete Annapurna massive range. There are simple mountain trekking lodges and teahouses along the entire route to the Mardi Himal trek to cater to hundreds of trekkers every day in peak seasons.

When to trek to Mardi Himal or what are the best months to visit?

If this trek is on your bucket list to do this trek; the best month is shortly after the monsoon is over which is mid-September; the monsoon clears the atmosphere but is still all green in the lowlands and white peaks with superb blue mountains and it is not cold. The other best month is April when you can enjoy the widely blooming rhododendrons in the route.

Autumn Season (Mid Sept-October – November): this is Nepal´s peak and the best time to go trekking. March-May is the second best season of the year to go trekking. Winter Season (December – February): The sky is clear but it can get very cold and there is a risk of the path being closed/covered due to snowfall so you have to check your trip planner before departure.  May - June: This is Nepal´s hot pre-monsoon season and it can get very warm indeed. The valleys however are starting to bloom with flowers though green leaves come up, still a good time to trek.  Monsoon Season (June - Mid-September): This is the monsoon or summer season and the least popular time to go trekking in Nepal. The risk of leeches and downpours increases greatly. Due to the early forested areas leeches at this time of year in Mardi Himal are quite active! Wear long trekking trousers tucked in at this time of year. Leech/mosquito repellent spray is recommended to carry with it. But it can be a good time to trek for Alpine flower researchers.

How to get to Mardi Himal Trek?

Like most of the Annapurna treks except Annapurna Circuit, the Mardi Himal Trek also starts and ends in Pokhara - the second biggest city and naturally blessed place to relax after the big hikes in Annapurna. It is 200km west of Kathmandu. All domestic airlines run several flights daily from Kathmandu which cost USD 105 each way. And about 7 to 8 hours tourist coach ride that cost USD 10 to 25 each way. Tourist buses leave every morning at 7:00 AM. You consider the option of hiring a private car if you are a group of 3 to 4 people that can be very comfortable.  Your agency can arrange cars on your request.

How long is the Mardi Himal trek or its itinerary?

Nepal is a country where trekking distance is measured in hours and days. The Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary will be 5 to 7 days starting and ending at Pokhara. The tentative distance is 69 Km (110 miles) depending on the route you choose. We have designed a 5-night 6-day itinerary that can be suitable for all age groups and levels of physical fitness you have.

Other Popular treks around Mardi Himal that you can combine with it. Annapurna Base Camp (5 to 10 days) Ghorepani Poon Hill Khopra Danda Trek Ghandruk Trek

We suggest a tailor-made trip as well if you don’t find our itinerary matches your time so please send us your details and requirements.

Is this trekking for me?

This trek doesn´t require super fitness but however moderate level of fitness is necessary though there is no direct climbing involved. The path is a proper hiking trail to Mardhi Himal View Point. Guide in Himalaya (Wilderness Excursion - our corporate sister agency) advises our clients going trekking to see a doctor before they go for a check-up and to talk about dealing with altitude sickness. For pure trekking along the Mardi Himal trek in Nepal, you´ll need to consider the number of days you´ll be out trekking to get an idea of how fit you should be. Most days include 4-7 hours of slow hiking. If you plan to do the trek in 4-5 days which is also possible.

How much does it cost?

Mardi Himal Trek's cost depends on the mode of tour, accommodation, and transportation. The price here we have offered is USD 399.00 per person inclusive as the standard trek price on a double occupancy basis for 2024 and 2025. Single supplement charge if you are traveling solo. Taking flights to and from Pokhara saves your time and comfort rather than taking a tiring long bus ride though riding the bus reduces the cost. As the trekking journey starts at Pokhara; we do not include accommodation in Pokhara that can be arranged at extra cost if you ask.  We can arrange your transportation between Kathmandu and Pokhara if you ask us. And there will be neat and clean simple trekking lodge accommodations on a sharing basis during the trek.

Threat and Risk

Participants should be aware trekking, mountaineering, and traveling in a developing country are activities that involve a risk of personal injury or death. As a condition of booking you must accept these risks and be responsible for your actions and involvement. Adventure travel requires an open and flexible attitude. You may experience extreme conditions, unpredictable weather, and last-minute changes to the itinerary beyond our control. The ability to work in a team is an important aspect of all of our trips. However, your Guide in the Himalayas tries your best to maximize your trip, which is great fun and a lifetime experience.

Great trekking agency in katmandu, nepal.

Booking this trek already was a pleasure! Pradip Tamang (director) arranged everything in excellent dialogue with us, always quick and relevant answers. We met our guide Rahul Tamang (not family) the day before the trek: nice guy and well-spoken English. He really felt what we wanted: we travelled with our 11 yr old daughter, and during the while trip he was very caring, arranging stays and rests according to our needs, always assuring safety. He really is a great guide, who knows his job. He also met respect from locals and fellow guides, wherever we went. The company is small, but absolutely reliable an accurate. We certainly recommend it.

Mardi himal trek review 2018.

I highly recommend to everyone. This short but beautifull trek is breathtaking. Perfect and professional service from the beginning to the end. Pradip is just amazing as a guide and we had good time while having the most beautifull views. Maybe this one is short, is not an easy one, but worth each day. We certainly will do our next trek to Mustang with them. Thank you so much for everything.
