By Dan Thompson

Comedian Mark Steel has written a new stand up show, all about Margate.

Every year for Mark Steel’s In Town on BBC Radio 4, the comedian, columnist and author visits six different towns across the UK. He delves into the history, people and idiosyncrasies to try to work out what ingredients combine to make the places distinctive. He then creates a bespoke stand-up show about the town, which he performs in front of a local audience.

He visited Margate in November and December 2023, and was shown around the town by The Isle of Thanet News writer Dan Thompson, who regularly leads history walks. They visited local shops, cafes, studios, and galleries, including Margate Bookshop, GB Pizza, Dalby Cafe, Turner Contemporary, and the Shell Grotto. They also visited a flat in Arlington House, had a private view of the Crab Museum, and took a walk down the Harbour Arm.

mark steel tour 2024

Mark Steel’s In Town is a celebration of the sort of places in Britain that have their own fascinating stories to tell and local people who are passionate about what their town has to offer. “Essentially,” Mark says, “it’s a best man speech, but about a place.”

The show is now in it’s 13th series. Previously, Mark has recorded shows in well over 50 interesting and unusual places from Penzance in Cornwall to Kirkwall in Orkney.

His Margate show will be recorded at the Lido on 25th April. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm recording.

I saw him at The Theatre Royal a few years back, very funny!

never heard of him

Very irreverent to put it mildly! And indeed his ‘town’ shows are very funny. I’d expect some of the themes, gripes, conflicts that typically pop up on here to get a mention.

Really like Mark, a fine comedian. Interesting how many of his admirers are Conservatives.

Although clearly a Lefty, his beliefs aren’t too in-yer-face (he takes the pee out of everyone!), and it’s all done in genuine good humour.

Anyway, us Conservatives tend to have a good sense of humour, and don’t dismiss comedy because it’s left-leaning (unlike the woke left who want to ban Jim Davidson and Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown!).

I looked him up on you tube and not my cup of tea

💯 % correct Ms P 👍

I prefer Jim to him

There’s plenty to send up in Margate so should be a good night out !

So that’s this week’s political moral maze solved then, thanks to Ms Pinkie. Lefties are all humourless snowflakes who want to ban hilarious but politically incorrect comedians like Jim Davidson and Roy Chubby Brown, and instead make us all watch Eddie Izzard poncing about in a dress and makeup, being outraged about traditional britsh values or something. Which Tories would politely chuckle at because they’re such good sports, and have a better sense of humour than the rest of us. I suppose they must have, for they are surely wetting themselves as they keep foisting the likes of Bojo, Lizzy Dripping, and Sushi Rinak on the nation as our prime ministers! What a hoot.

Hahaha, love it!

Got my (free) tickets!!! : )

Thanks to Kathy (and Dan) for the heads up.

Mark Steel reveals the next series of In Town...

Including a show in French

Mark Steel has announced the the places to feature in the next series of his Radio 4 series In Town…

They include a stop in Paris – where he performs two versions of the show , one in English and one in French.

The other locations are Nottingham, the Isles of Scilly, Tring, Salisbury and Newport in South Wales.

Steel – who once wrote a book about the French Revolution – has been learning the language over recent years and started performing stand-up in it earlier this year.

Just before those shows he said: ‘’In a way, doing a show about the crazy ways of Orkney or Basingstoke, in front of people who live there, is performing in another language. The people in those places are always funny, always heartening.  So the next stage is to do a show in which the words are different to the ones I’m familiar with as well.’’

And he  told Brighton’s BN1 magazine : ‘They’ve got some great phrases. To snog someone is "Rouler une pelle" – literally to ‘roll a shovel’. It’s not so romantic though!’

Steel admitted there were challenges as even ‘when you try out new material in your own language, it’s quite a gamble. But I’m really looking forward to it. What I’d really like to do a series of these shows over there. I think that French stand-up, as far as we understand it, is relatively new.

‘I do rattle along at a ridiculous pace. Which makes it particularly difficult. Am I talking myself out of doing it?’

The next series of In Town will go out on Radio 4 from August 22. As well as the half-hour broadcast version, a longer cut will be available from BBC Sounds.

U.S. Open storylines: Can Xander Schauffele (or anyone else) top Scottie Scheffler?

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler says he is unconcerned that there is a "target" on his back as he prepares for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. (0:50)

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Talk about a stark contrast.

After the PGA Championship presented the best golfers in the world with an execution test at Valhalla Country Club that featured a winning score of 21-under (the lowest ever in major championship history), the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 provides something entirely different.

The sand hills of North Carolina will test every aspect of each player's game during what is expected to be a hot and humid week. And though there's a clear favorite, there are also 155 other players in the field wanting to turn the third major of the year into their shining moment.

Here are five storylines we're watching at Pinehurst this week.

Scottie Scheffler's dominance

No one's presence looms larger over this golf tournament than Scottie Scheffler 's. He has been mentioned in every news conference, is the talk of both his peers and fans and is far and away the favorite to win this week, not to mention the best player in the world by a healthy margin.

After winning the Memorial Tournament and adding to his five-win total for 2024, it continues to feel like barring any setback -- be it injury or something out of the ordinary -- Scheffler will contend every time he tees it up. As Viktor Hovland explained, it's not just that Scheffler is winning, it's that even when he doesn't play as well as he can, he can still win.

"We all hit great shots out here, and there are a lot of guys that are impressive, but you know the old saying: It's not about how good your good shots are, it's how good your bad shots are," Hovland said. "He's certainly playing a game where his bad shots are still good."

This year, Scheffler played in 13 events and finished inside the top 10 in 12 of them. He leads the tour in strokes gained: total averaging nearly 3 strokes gained over the field average. Even his putting has now improved to about tour average, which is enough for him to win pretty much everything on any given week.

"He is the gold standard right now," Bryson DeChambeau said. "And we're all looking up to him going, 'All right, how do we get to that level?'"

"Scottie is doing incredible things," PGA champion Xander Schauffele said. "Every week we play, he seems to build a bigger lead, and somehow make the mountain even taller for all of us to climb."

For all the genuflecting players are doing around Scheffler, it's evident they want to beat him and his play is only motivating them even more. The task at hand is not easy. Beyond the quality of Scheffler's game being what it is, it's hard to think of a course that fits Scheffler better than Pinehurst No. 2 with its demand on ballstriking and short game -- both of which are arguably Scheffler's biggest strengths.

"What I appreciate about this kind of course is a lot of the areas around the greens are all fairway, and so it may be extremely difficult shots, but there's always opportunity," Scheffler said. "I believe it's a better test than just having heavy rough over the back of every green."

If it's a true test that this course will provide, there's no one with a better chance of acing it than the No.1 player in the world. -- Uggetti

Who can beat Scheffler?

If Scheffler doesn't win his third major this week, then Schauffele might be poised to win his second straight. Outside of Scheffler, no one is playing better golf than Schauffele.

The 30-year-old from San Diego finished in the top 25 in each of his past 10 starts on tour, including seven in the top eight. He tied for second at the Players Championship, was solo second at the Wells Fargo Championship, a signature event, and then captured his first major at last month's PGA Championship.

After waiting so long to win a major -- 28 starts to be exact -- Schauffele said he's not done.

"Just checked one box," Schauffele said. "Just a lot of unchecked boxes. I just checked one box, which is really cool. Obviously, a box very much at the top of my list. But still a lot more to do, obviously."

Schauffele has been especially good in the U.S. Open. He finished in the top 10 in six of his seven starts in the tournament, including a tie for third at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California in 2019.

What's Schauffele's secret to success?

"Just what I bring week to week, just a little bit of extra patience," he said. "You have to ramp that up a little bit more during these weeks. All U.S. Opens, they're unique in their own way. But they all feel like par is a great score, and you really have to just plot your way around a property.

"I was here a week ago just for a little tuneup, and the way the course is playing now is significantly different already. I can only imagine what it's going to look like in two days." -- Schlabach

Pinehurst is ready to bite

Even before Wyndham Clark called the greens at Pinehurst No. 2 "borderline," players were already experiencing the tough challenge the course will provide this week. The firmness of the fairways and speed of the greens is already dialed up, setting up a week that could feature a lot of creative -- and frustrating -- short game shots around the course's diabolical greens.

"The last few days playing practice rounds -- I'm guilty as well as the rest of the guys I've played with -- we've putted off a lot of greens," Tiger Woods said. "It depends how severe the USGA wants to make this and how close they want to get us up to those sides. But I foresee just like in '05 watching some of the guys play pingpong back and forth. It could happen."

Woods, for his part, said he's been using everything from his 60-degree wedge to his 4-iron to hit different shots around the green. DeChambeau said he will likely stick to his wedges and putter, while players such as Collin Morikawa have even tried hybrids and fairway woods.

The event and the course present a different challenge than what PGA Tour players (and LIV players, for that matter) face on a week-to-week basis. Long irons, especially on par 3s, will be plenty, and hitting the green will be an even bigger advantage this week than any other. Once you're on, however, you're not safe either.

"I don't really know where they're going to end up putting the pins. But if they were, in my opinion, borderline yesterday when the greens were soft," Hovland said, before praising the raised, upside-down bowl nature of the greens. "What if it starts blowing up a little bit and the greens just keep getting firmer and faster? It'll be just interesting to see."

Whether it's praise or preemptive criticism, Pinehurst will not only be tough to conquer this week, but it should also provide great theater as players chart their way around a golf course that will make them think plenty over every shot.

"I think a course like this definitely demands a different skill set and also some creativity," Rory McIlroy said. "I think for the viewer at home, that's more exciting than seeing guys hack out of 4-inch rough all the time. Hopefully, that comes to fruition and it is an exciting golf tournament." -- Uggetti

What will the LIV Golf League players do?

In the last U.S. Open played at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014, Martin Kaymer ran away from the field and won by a whopping 8 strokes to become the first man from Germany to win the tournament.

After winning, Kaymer, now captain of Cleeks GC in the LIV Golf League, hadn't been back to Pinehurst until this week.

"Yeah, last time I was here was when I won," Kaymer said. "I live in Germany, and it's not really a place that you just swing by quickly for a couple days. Obviously, coming here with all those good memories, when I played today it felt like I left yesterday. The golf course looks a little bit different than 10 years ago, but the feeling was very positive."

Kaymer, 39, is even staying in the same room in a hotel near the course that he did a decade ago.

"I don't know if it helps," Kaymer said. "It cannot hurt, I guess. I'm a little bit superstitious when it comes down to that. I think, regardless, it's going to be a really nice week."

Kaymer is one of 12 players from the LIV Golf League in the U.S. Open field; Jon Rahm withdrew on Tuesday because of an injury to his left foot. After a stellar performance in the majors in 2023 ( Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka tied for second at the Masters, then Koepka won his third PGA Championship), it has been a so-so start this year.

There were three LIV Golf players in the top 10 at the Masters (DeChambeau and Cameron Smith tied for sixth and Tyrrell Hatton tied for ninth) and just one at the PGA Championship (DeChambeau was second).

"I think Houston was actually a pretty solid test for us," DeChambeau said. "The Bermuda fairways and greens are somewhat similar to this week, so there was definitely some thought put into that. We make sure over there to try and set the schedule appropriate relative to the majors, as well." -- Schlabach

Who's going to the Olympics?

There's more than the U.S. Open trophy and a $20 million purse on the line at Pinehurst No. 2 this week. There are also spots in the Olympics men's golf tournament up for grabs. The cutoff to qualify for the tournament, scheduled for Aug. 1-4 at Le Golf National outside Paris, is on Monday.

The top 15 players -- but no more than four from each country -- in the Official World Golf Ranking will automatically qualify. After that, the rest of the 60-man field will be filled with no more than two players from a single country based on OWGR.

As it stands, Scheffler (No. 1), Schauffele (No. 2), Clark (No. 4) and Morikawa (No. 7) would represent the U.S.

Schauffele won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021.

There are five other Americans in the top 15 of the OWGR -- No. 9 Patrick Cantlay , No. 10 Max Homa , No. 11 Sahith Theegala , No. 12 Brian Harman and No. 15 Keegan Bradley -- but they wouldn't be eligible to compete in the Olympics under the selection rules.

Morikawa jumped Cantlay in the OWGR with a runner-up finish at the Memorial last week, so there certainly could be additional movement on the U.S. squad after the U.S. Open.

Other golfers who seem assured of being eligible for the Olympics include Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick (Great Britain), Hovland (Norway), McIlroy and Shane Lowry (Ireland), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), Tom Kim and Ben An (South Korea) and Jon Rahm (Spain).

One of the tightest races is for the two spots on the Canadian team. Last week, Adam Hadwin finished third at the Memorial and moved from No. 59 to No. 35 in the OWGR. He jumped good friend Corey Conners (No. 46) to potentially join Nick Taylor (No. 32) on the team. -- Schlabach

Chris Bailey's estate questions the newly reformed version of punk band The Saints

black and white photo of punk band the saints standing before a brick wall

The estate of Chris Bailey, the founding lead singer of iconic Australian punk band The Saints, has released a statement in response to a new line-up of the band announced earlier this week.

"Chris Bailey's Family and the Chris Bailey Estate have questioned the decision to reform The Saints with Mark Arm from Mudhoney replacing Chris Bailey on vocals," a statement issued overnight, Australian time, read.

"Neither the late singer's family, nor the Chris Bailey Estate, were informed or consulted on this decision.

"We are surprised that Mark Arm agreed to do this without consultation."

Bailey died in 2022 . An Australian tour from a new version of the band, marketed as The Saints '73-'78, was announced this week to coincide with a long-awaited box set reissue of the band's seminal first album, (I'm) Stranded.

Founding members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay will appear in this latest iteration of the group. Guitarist Mick Harvey and bassist Peter Oxley are fellow newcomers, alongside Arm.

After Kuepper left the band in 1978, Chris Bailey retained the name The Saints. He toured and released new music under that name with various line-ups encompassing dozens of musicians, until his passing.

Tim Pittman of Feel Presents — who manages Kuepper and is promoting the upcoming The Saints '73-'78 tour — said he wasn't surprised to see the statement, but there was no requirement to clear this celebration of the band with the Bailey estate.

"We don't need to ask anyone to use the name The Saints '73-'78, and none of the members need to get anyone's approval to perform the songs that they wrote and recorded," he said.

"It might be different calling yourself The Saints – I don't know – but we're not doing that."

There is a long history of discussion around the use of the name The Saints, leading Kuepper and Pittman to settle on using the elongated title some time ago.

"The Saints '73–'78 as a name has been in use since about 2010, firstly as a fan Facebook page, and then the members from that period took it on as an official page," Pittman said.

"After having agreed to terms with Chris prior to his death, and the other members of The Saints, we use it as the merchandise link to differentiate ourselves from the other Saints.

"The band is called The Saints '73-'78. They requested of us to use that name moving forward in whatever manner we were using it to promote that era of the band.

"We were already using it anyway, so it was a no-brainer for us to say yes. It was a request, but we were already using it.

"There's five people who have a stake in that band: Kym [Bradshaw, bassist from 1975-1977], Ed, Chris, Ivor and Algy [Ward, bassist from 1977-1980]. The Bailey estate took exception to the fact that Chris had agreed to everything prior."

The estate also accused Kuepper and Feel Presents of issuing merchandise without permission.

"Ed Kuepper and his management team, Feel Presents, also recently put out unauthorised merchandise and reissues without any consultation with the Estate and were eventually forced to change the name to The Saints 1973-1978 and promised not to do anything else without consultation," the statement read.

Pittman refuted those claims.

"The 7" last year (a reissue of (I'm) Stranded, the band's classic debut single) and the merchandise was approved by the Bailey estate: the artwork, the idea, and the bank details that they gave me for payment for the supposed unapproved releases," he said.

Bailey's estate said it was operating to "honour Chris Bailey’s memory and the Saints' significant legacy with integrity", and hit out at reported attempts to undermine Bailey's role in the band.

"Furthermore, there have been attempts in interviews to reduce or negate the role Chris Bailey played in the original Saints," the statement read.

The ABC contacted the estate for examples of this, but had not received a response at time of publication.

Speaking with the ABC last week, Mark Arm said paying respect to Chris Bailey was his top priority in this new gig.

"I want to be true to Chris and try to honour him," he said.

The Saints '73-'78 will tour Australia this November. The reissue of (I'm) Stranded will be out on November 15.

Paul McCartney cryptically teases 2024 tour

Paul McCartney could be heading back onto the road in 2024 for another concert tour .

In a social media post from June 9, McCartney shared a video of a case being shut. It appears to be one that would hold music equipment and instruments for a tour.

No caption was shared with the video. However, one of McCartney’s guitarists, Rusty Anderson, added fuel to the fire . He reposted the video with the caption, “Hmmm…”

His other guitarist, Brian Ray, also reposted the video on his story.

Both Ray and Anderson have been a part of McCartney’s touring band since 2002. Paul “Wix” Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr. are also a part of the band.

A 2024 Paul McCartney tour

It would be a big deal if Paul McCartney tours in 2024. He recently embarked on the “Got Back” tour from 2022-2023. Since Wings broke up, McCartney has gone on 17 concert tours. His current touring band has been with him since the 2002 “Driving Rain” tour.

The tour commenced on April 28, 2022, with a show in Spokane, Washington. Throughout the next couple of months, McCartney and his touring band traveled across North America. The first leg of the tour concluded on June 16, 2022, with a show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The tour continued with a headlining show at the Glastonbury Festival in England. He would resume the tour in October 2023 with shows in Australia, Mexico, and Brazil.

Who is Paul McCartney?

Paul McCartney is best known for his time with the Beatles. He was one of the primary songwriters of the Fab Four along with John Lennon. The band was together for a decade between 1960-70 and released 13 studio albums.

After the band broke up, Macca got to work with his first studio album, McCartney. He subsequently released Ram, which he recorded with his life Linda McCartney, and the first Wings album, Wild Life, in 1971.

Throughout the seventies, McCartney and Wings released six more albums including Band on the Run. McCartney will soon release a remastered live studio album, One Hand Clapping, from his time with Wings.

Since 1980, McCartney has released 17 studio albums. That doesn’t include the five classical albums and three albums with The Fireman that he recorded.

His most recent studio album completed a trilogy of McCartney albums. McCartney III came out in 2020 and came out over 40 years after McCartney II. A remix edition of the album, McCartney III Imagined, was subsequently released in 2021. The likes of Idris Elba, Beck, Phoebe Bridgers, and Dominic Fike contributed to the album.

As an artist, McCartney has been nominated for 81 Grammy Awards. He has won 18 awards throughout his illustrious career. His most recent nominations came at the 2022 Grammys when he was nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song for McCartney III and “Find My Way,” respectively.

PARIS (AP) — The Eiffel Tower got a makeover in preparation for the Olympics.

The Olympic rings were mounted to the iconic Parisian landmark on Friday to mark 50 days until the sports world gathers in the French capital for the quadrennial sports festival.

The rings were displayed on the south side of the 135-year-old landmark in central Paris, overlooking the Seine River. Each ring is 9 meters (30 feet) in diameter and made of recycled French steel.

Thousands of athletes will parade through the city on boats on the Seine along a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) route in the opening ceremony at sunset on July 26.

There will be no shortage of iconic venues at the Paris Olympics.

The tower, nicknamed La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady), will feature prominently in the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games and the Paralympics.

Men’s and women’s beach volleyball will be played at the foot of the 330-meter (1,083-foot) monument. They will be watched by nearly 13,000 fans at the temporary Eiffel Tower Stadium on the nearby Champ de Mars, where Parisians and tourists like to have picnics on the grass or watch July 14 firework displays.

The hugely popular landmark has seen soaring visitor numbers in the leadup to the Paris Games.

Two huge cranes were used to lift the 30-ton structure and mount it between the first and second floors of the tower.

The Olympic rings will be illuminated every night with 100,000 LED bulbs through the Paralympics , which start on Aug. 28, 17 days after the Olympic closing ceremony.

The Paralympics will bring together 4,400 athletes from 180 countries in 549 events and 22 sports. Many sports will take place near landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and the Grand Palais.
