A foodie’s tour of Melaka: What to eat and buy

melaka food tour

Heading to Melaka for a weekend getaway and plan to eat your way around? Venture beyond Jonker Walk for gems such as Lin Neo Delight in Taman Kota Laksamana Jaya, which serves up homely Peranakan fare, or Restoran Res Porridge House in Taman Melaka Raya, which receives raves from locals. Here are 11 tried-and-tested places for good grub and edible souvenirs. Hedy Khoo leads the way.

Precious Eye Store

Where: 32 Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka Open: Fridays to Sundays, 11am to midnight

For unforgettably crispy yet tender squid, head to 32 Jalan Hang Jebat. Located at a corner of Jonker Street, the eatery is oddly called Precious Eye Store, which sounds like an optical shop. The shop has no proper signboard.

So set your sights on a bright yellow menu board with items like Jumbo Crispy Squid (RM20 or about S$6), which is a must-try. The squid is coated in batter and deep-fried to order.

melaka food tour

Ask for the spicy version which comes sprinkled with eye-wateringly hot chilli powder. The batter is light and crisp, but the squid is astonishingly tender with a springy bite.

The fruit rojak (RM8), which also caught my eye, comprises chunks of pineapple, cucumber and crisp dough fritters covered in inky brown rojak sauce and crushed peanuts, served in a boat-shaped dish. The quality of the rojak sauce easily surpasses that of many famous rojak stalls in Singapore. The deep, rich savoury-sweet fermented shrimp paste shines through, without any fishy smells.

melaka food tour

Another offering that hit the bull’s eye is the Stinky Tofu (RM10), perfectly fried with a crunchy exterior and a juicy interior, laced with enough fermented taste yet not overpowering. It comes with pickled radish and carrot to cleanse the palate if you are not used to the odorous dish.

The Cendol (RM7) is also worth a try, although I did not care for the canned sweetcorn in it. The housemade gula melaka syrup, though, was thick, sweet and aromatic with the scent of pandan leaves.

melaka food tour

The eatery operates on Fridays and weekends only.

The Kappan House Restaurant

Where: 20 Jalan Tukang Besi, 75200 Melaka Open: Fridays to Wednesdays, 11am to 8pm. Closed on Thursdays Tel: +601-110-803-698, +601-2275-3131

The Kappan Cendol (RM4.50) here is my current obsession. I dream about the green strips of jelly, which are lovingly handmade by owner and chef Leow Lay Wah. The 57-year-old self-taught cook opened the eatery in 2010. But she started making her own cendol from scratch only in 2020 when her dessert supplier closed down. It took many failed attempts before she arrived at her current recipe. Surprisingly, she does not use mung bean starch in her concoction, but declined to reveal more about the flour in her jelly mix.

melaka food tour

The green colour comes from blending fresh pandan leaves into juice. Her cendol mould is a metal tray with holes personally drilled by her husband.

melaka food tour

If you have a sweet tooth, ask for more gula melaka syrup when you order the cendol. Madam Leow prepares it from premium quality gula melaka and uses fresh pandan leaves as flavouring.

I have eaten cendol in a few places in Melaka, including those at famous Peranakan eateries, but none holds a candle to Madam Leow’s version.

She also ferments her own rice wine using a recipe handed down from her mother. Try the Kappan Special Fried Mee Hoon (RM12), which is rice vermicelli cooked in a gravy of ginger and wine, with fresh minced pork.

melaka food tour

Wash it down with the Kappan Herbal Tea (RM3.50), aromatic and tasty with luohan guo, white fungus, dried longan and pear.

Madam Leow has a few special items which she prepares only during public holidays or festive seasons.

The Traditional Ki Kuih With Duck Egg Kaya (RM8.50) is one of them. I will gladly travel to Melaka to eat it again. The viscous dark brown kaya, made with duck eggs and gula melaka, has an arresting aroma. The soft wobbly jelly-like texture of the ki kuih – a steamed cake made with a little alkaline – mops up the kaya so well that it leaves an indelible memory.

My Chicken Rice

Where: 47A Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka Open: Wednesday to Mondays, 9am to 6pm. Closed on Tuesdays Tel: +601-9311-8277

I have always felt that chicken rice balls in Melaka are overrated. I have not changed my mind about it. But I was curious to find out the quality of the chicken at this eatery thronged by tourists.

Opened in late 2018, it is tucked in a shophouse unit beside Watsons on Jonker Street. Kampung chicken is called Village Chicken here and costs RM38 for half a bird.

melaka food tour

The regular chicken costs less at RM28 for half a bird. I tried both and I find it worth paying for the Village Chicken as the meat is firmer and more flavoursome. The light soya sauce dressing is a tad sweet, but the garlic chilli is appetisingly tangy with the use of fresh lime juice.

Skip the offal such as gizzard and liver as they come with an off-putting odour. As for the rice balls, I ordered just two (RM0.60 each). While the rice was heavy with the flavour of garlic, the texture was too mushy for my liking.

Bibik House

Where: 125, Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka Open: 10.30am to 8pm daily Tel: +606-288-3919, +601-6628-9199

The shop used to be at 121 Jalan Hang Jebat, but moved a few units down to its current location at 125 Jalan Hang Jebat in 2020.

But it is hard to tell the difference because the owners have renovated the new unit such that it is a carbon copy of the previous one. Selling mainly dried goods such as gula melaka, spice pastes and snacks, the shop also has tables for customers to tuck into cendol.

melaka food tour

While the shop is justifiably proud of its durian cendol, I much prefer its original cendol (RM7.50). The green strips of cendol are housemade from mung bean starch and served separately in a little plastic cup. The reason is to prevent the texture of the cendol strips from getting too hard when it comes into contact with the ice.

melaka food tour

But the gula melaka syrup is not as thick or aromatic as I remembered from my previous trips. Still, the cendol is worth the calories if you are in the area.

For home cooks, a must-buy item is the five spice powder. It is pricey at RM11.80 for a 60g packet, but the mix of aniseed, nutmeg, pepper, clove, cinnamon, mandarin orange peel and coriander is alluringly aromatic. A little goes a long way for marinades and braised dishes.

Jonker Walk Poh Keong Enterprise

melaka food tour

Where: 81 Jalan Tokong, 75200 Melaka Open: Wednesdays to Mondays, 11am to 4pm. Closed on Tuesdays Tel: +601-110-746-883

Each time I go to Melaka, I head to Pooh Keon Enterprise to stock up on pineapple tarts. I first patronised the shop in 2012, after a local friend recommended it. The business has since changed its name to Jonker Walk Poh Keong Enterprise, but the signboard remains unchanged.

The pineapple rolls (which are referred to as “round ones” at the shop) cost RM22 for a box of 24 pieces. The ribbed crust is powdery and buttery. The open-faced pineapple tarts with a crispier crust cost RM22 for a box of 20 pieces.

melaka food tour

The pineapple filling is made from freshly grated pineapple. The pastries are freshly made and baked daily. Call ahead for orders if you plan to buy plenty.

If the tarts are hot when you buy them, remove the plastic cover of the box as soon as you can to allow them to cool down. They should be able to last up to about a week without refrigeration.

Fresh Oyster Corner Monterio

melaka food tour

Where: Medan Selera Portuguese Settlement, Melaka Portuguese settlement, Bandar Hilir, 75050, Melaka Open: 6 to 10.30pm daily Tel: +601-7686-6158

While locals view the seafood joints at the Portuguese Settlement as tourist traps, I find it worthwhile visiting if you know what to order and which stall to eat at. I always eat at two stalls I am familiar with.

Fresh Oyster Corner Monterio sells fresh shellfish caught by husband-and-wife team Tony Monterio, 56, and Amy Monterio, 47.

melaka food tour

The couple head out each afternoon by boat to the waters around nearby islands such as Pulau Besar, which is 13km off the coast of mainland Melaka, where they dive for shellfish such as wild oysters and mussels. They also go to the mangroves to hand-pick lokan, a type of mud clams. The menu depends on the day’s catch.

The shellfish is grilled over a charcoal fire and served with a housemade dip made from chilli, shallot and lime juice.

The lightly grilled lokan (RM25 for a plate), which looks like giant-sized clams, boasts succulent, lustrous meat.

melaka food tour

The wildcaught mussels are also superb (RM25 a plate), with a plump, briny and sweet bite.

melaka food tour

Oysters range from RM7 to RM30 each, depending on size. The medium-sized ones I tried this time costs RM12 each. If you are daring enough, eat them raw. I tried that on my previous trip and my stomach was fine.

melaka food tour

Cockles are priced at RM30 a plate for large-sized ones.

One Terraces Restaurant

melaka food tour

Where: Stall No. 1, Medan Selera, Kampung Portugis Melaka 75050 Open: Wednesdays to Mondays, 4.30pm to 10.30pm. Closed on Tuesdays Tel: +601-2937-7718

Next to Fresh Corner Oyster Monterio is One Terraces Restaurant. First-time visitors to the Portuguese Settlement may find the persistence of throngs of touts at the carpark unnerving. Just say which stall you are headed for and they will leave you alone.

One Terraces Restaurant opened a decade ago. Start with the chicken wings (RM4), which are crispy and spicy. Simply marinated in dried chilli paste and salt, then coated in a batter made with two types of flour, the chicken wings are addictive and do not need the accompanying sambal belacan dip.

melaka food tour

Order the burnt crab (RM60), cooked in black pepper and salt, then topped with white pepper, and the salt heat crab (RM60).

melaka food tour

Apart from the pepper addition, the cooking method for both crabs is similar. The crab meat is plump, moist and firm.

melaka food tour

Restoran Jinbo (Melaka)

Where: No. 16, 18 and 20, Jalan KLJ 4, Taman Kota Laksamana Jaya, 75200 Melaka Open: 7am to 3pm daily Tel: +606-270-0019

melaka food tour

For an old-school dim sum dining experience, Restoran Jinbo (Melaka), popular with locals, serves up a wide variety of dishes at friendly prices. The tea comes with a small plastic basin of hot water for you to rinse the ceramic teacups.

melaka food tour

The boat porridge, called Savoury Meat Porridge on the menu, costs RM7. The hearty bowl is packed with ingredients such as cuttlefish, braised nuts and rings of fried pork skin.

melaka food tour

The barbecued pork buns (RM6.50 for three) are winners. The bun is soft and fluffy, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture, and filled with a char siew paste that is more savoury than sweet.

melaka food tour

For a crispy snack, try the stuffed crab claw with prawn (RM10 for three pieces), prettily plump with a bouncy stuffing of seafood paste coated with breadcrumbs.

Lin Neo Delight

melaka food tour

Where: 40 Jalan KLJ 4, Taman Kota Laksamana Jaya, 75200 Melaka Open: Tuesdays to Thursdays, 11am to 3pm, Fridays to Sundays, 11am to 3pm, 5.30 to 9.30pm. Closed on Mondays. Tel: +601-3280-1058, +601-6311-5815

This eatery is packed to the gills, especially during lunch time, so it is best to make reservations or get there early.

melaka food tour

The Telur Dadar Cincaluk (RM8), a simple dish of fried omelette with fermented shrimp, is so expertly fried that you taste the briny cincaluk without fishy odours overwhelming the dish. The egg is fluffy with a browned, crisp exterior.

melaka food tour

The well-marinated Nyonya Special Fried Chicken (RM18) is so delicious, it still lingers on my mind weeks after.

melaka food tour

Another must-try is the Pongteh Pork (RM18) with a moreish reddish brown gravy. The pork is tender yet has bite.

melaka food tour

Restoran Res Porridge House

Where: 129, Jalan Melaka Raya, Taman Melaka Raya, 75000 Melaka Open: Mondays to Saturdays, 5 to 11.30pm. Closed on Sundays Tel: +601-2683-2855

A popular spot with locals, Restoran Res Porridge House serves up no-frills homely fare that I can see myself eating at least once a week if I lived in Melaka. The eatery, which has been operating for 26 years, is air-conditioned but smoky from the kitchen fumes. The crowd builds up rapidly after 7.30pm and many opt to sit outside at the sidewalk tables.

melaka food tour

The main attraction is porridge. The scallop porridge (RM12 for small), packed with sweet small scallops and garnished with fresh coriander, spring onion and fried shallots, deserves special mention.

melaka food tour

Definitely get the Char Kuay (RM10), crunchy dough fritters stuffed with a springy seafood paste.

melaka food tour

Zulaikha Binti Melan

Where: No. 14 Medan Samudera, First Floor, Jalan Quayside, 75000 Melaka Open: Wednesdays to Mondays, 10am to 7pm. Closed on Tuesdays Tel: +601-7653-2526

To bag the best local products and snacks such as fish crackers, head for Medan Samudera, a building that houses handicraft and food stalls.

At Zulaikha Binti Melan, which has been in business for over 20 years, my must-buys are the Cincalok Kampung (RM4 a bottle, RM10 for three), which packs a punch but is not overly salted.

melaka food tour

The Belacan Istimewa (RM10 for three bottles) is toasted belacan – a convenient option when you want to use belacan without the hassle of roasting it yourself.

Best food in Melaka

Malaysian food is one of my favourite Southeast Asian cuisines because of the sheer variety. Large Indian and Chinese populations have influenced the food in Melaka, as I found out when eating in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur and of course the foodie capital of Penang . Like other cities in Malaysia , there are also tons of traditional Malay dishes to try like laksa and nasi lemak. Let’s begin by running through the best dishes in Melaka that you should try during your Malaysia itinerary : Dim sum: While these delicious steamed dumplings originate from China, they’re now very popular in Malaysia. Fillings include pork, chicken, prawn and vegetables. Usually, you’ll eat dim sum as a spread with lots of little plates with tea and steamed pork buns which are bigger and made from steamed bread rather than rice. Nasi lemak: The Malaysia national dish shouldn’t be missed while in Melaka or Malaysia generally. Rice is mixed with peanuts, spicy sambal, cucumber, anchovies and boiled egg. I remember trying this dish the first time I visited Melaka in 2015 and being blown away. I’ve eaten it so many times since then!

Nasi lemak what to eat melaka

Wan tan pork noodles: Another Melaka favourite with Chinese origins. These egg noodles are topped with flavoursome barbecue pork and Chinese kale. You’ll find this dish served cheaply all over Melaka by locals who have been making it for generations. Banana leaf curry: Don’t miss an Indian-Malay curry in Melaka’s Little India. I don’t know why food tastes so much better eaten without cutlery and plates but it does. In Melaka you can eat fresh veg or meat curry spooned up onto a banana leaf plate and wash it down with a mango lassi. Assam laksa: This typical Malay dish has the ultimate balance: sour and spicy with soft fish and chewy noodles. Mackerel and tamarind give it its distinct flavour. I’ll tell you where to eat in Melaka for assam laksa further down.

Chee cheong fun: I love this chewy rice batter topped with shrimp paste. This is another dish with Cantonese origins that arrived in Malaysia with Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. You can find veggie versions in Melaka if you don’t eat shrimp. Mua chee: Steamed rice balls are rolled in sweet and salty ground peanuts. This dessert is a must-try street food while visiting Melaka.

Mua Chee street food at Jonker Street Night Market

Popiah: This is a bit like a spring roll but fresh instead of fried. Popiah are stuffed with veggies like carrot and lettuce as well as peanuts and tofu. These can be found all over Malaysia including Melaka.

Where to eat in Melaka

There are so many great cafes and local restaurants in Melaka that range from hole-in-the-wall eateries run local families to modern Melaka cafes with fusion Western-Malay food. Veggies and vegans will also be well catered for as I’ll mention in this Melaka food guide. So, with no more ado, I’m going to tell you where to eat in Melaka! Hope you’re hungry.

Low Yong Moh Restaurant (breakfast dim sum)

Dim sum at Low Yong Moh Restaurant Melaka

Attention dim sum fans! A real local find, this chilled canteen-style restaurant has been serving dim sum for generations. Sit down, order a sweet coffee and wait for the waiters to come around with trays of dim sum to choose from. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was: I paid 13 MYR for three dim sum plates, a steamed pork bun and coffee. They stop serving around 12pm as apparently dim sum is traditionally a Malay breakfast food. So rather than eat breakfast in your hotel, get down to Low Yong Moh Restaurant for some of the best local food in Melak a.

Heng Huat Coffee Shop (best cheap eat)

Wan tan pork noodles Heng Huat coffee shop

Heng Huat Coffee Shop have been serving food since 1955 and I doubt the menu has changed much since. If you’re wondering where to eat in Melaka on a budget, you can’t do better than this modest cafe a few minutes walk from busy Jonker Walk. Its hidden-away location shakes off the crowds of tourists and I was the only Westerner as I tucked into wan tan pork noodles with a side of dumpling soup for only 4.5 MYR (90p). It actually gets even cheaper because Heng Huat Coffee Shop serve the national dish, nasi lemak, for just 1.5 MYR. Mix the rice, sambal, peanuts and greens together for the cheapest of cheap eats in Melaka.

Pin Pin Hiong (Hainanese food)

Pin Pin Hiong Melaka Malaysia

Many of the foods you would probably call Malay are what the locals would call Chinese. With a large percentage of people originating from China several generations ago, Chinese cuisine is some of the best food in Melaka today. For typical Hainanese cooking, visit Pin Pin Hiong . I could tell just from the busy crowd of locals that it would be good. I had mee suaw noodle soup and an oyster omelette because I wanted both even though I was dining solo. Well, why not? The oyster omelette was greasy and oily… in a good way! The chicken broth of the soup was also really tasty. From the photos I’d seen, I thought it would also include prawns but mine didn’t. I couldn’t work out which dish on the menu did include them, and I think I confused the staff with my question. Anyway, the chicken and prawn variety looked great so get it if you can!

Geographer Cafe

Geographer Cafe Melaka

Even if you just visit for the people-watching opportunities from this sunny yellow cafe, you can’t leave Melaka without a trip to Geographer Cafe . It’s a touristy joint on the main street so it’s no surprise that the prices are a little inflated. The veggie nasi lemak is 10 MYR which is more than many local restaurants in Melaka but I had to remind myself it’s still only £1.80. There’s a huge veggie menu at the Geographer with lots of tempeh and falafel platters. Yum!

Jonkers 88 (popular hawker-style food)

Assam laksa Jonkers 88 Melaka

For a restaurant on a main tourist street, Jonkers 88 serves some of the best food in Melaka by retaining its authentic hawker market-style. The portions are massive and absolutely delicious. Don’t expect a 5-star setting: you pay at the counter, wait for someone to spoon up your dish, then it’s time for the real challenge… Finding a seat! Grab a spot wherever you can, steaming bowl tottering on your tray. I had the assam laksa which was just the right level of sour and spicy. The noodles were the highlight: fresh, thick and slightly chewy. Most dishes are affordable at 10 MYR. For dessert, you should try the cendol. These shaved ice dishes are enormous and so refreshing on a hot day.

Anything at Jonker Street Night Market

If you visit Melaka between Friday and Sunday, factor the open-air night market into your plans. As well as live music and plenty of shopping opportunities, you can eat dinner… Or lots of dinners! We tried the local favourite of carrot cake (gooey rice squares with a sweet soy sauce), popiah (veggie spring rolls in roti ) and prawn sambal ‘burgers’ made with cooked egg. Lots of the best cheap food in Melaka is served here, so dig in!

Jonker Street Night Market Malaysia

The best vegetarian restaurants in Melaka

There isn’t loads of vegetarian food in Melaka but then there aren’t hundreds of anything in this small city. The veggie eateries that do exist are really decent. I loved the following three…

Shui Xian Su Shi Yuan Vegetarian

Chee cheong fun at Shui Xian Su Shi Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant Melaka

Shui Xian Su Shi Yuan is a total find and one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Melaka. It’s also insanely cheap: this tasty portion of chee cheong fun cost me 3.5 MYR (less than 50p). They serve veggie versions of all the classic Malaysian dishes like laksa and nasi lemak meaning non-meat eaters can experience the local food in Melaka. I always find it a shame that veggies and vegans often miss out on eating Asian street food because of its meaty nature. At this local Melaka restaurant, there’s no need. Like many local Melaka restaurants, this restaurant stop serving around 2pm and are closed on Sundays.

Indian restaurants, Little India

Curry best food Melaka

Another fantastic place to eat vegetarian food in Melaka is Little India located the other side of the river from central Melaka. You’ll find so many authentic Indian restaurants in this part of town serving curries and biriyanis for a couple of dollars. My favourite dish in this area was vegetable curry of the day, spooned out onto a banana leaf as the plate. Visit at lunchtime to benefit from the lunchtime deals which often include a soft drink and poppadoms. Many of these Melaka restaurants will be meat and alcohol-free due to the religion of the owners. They serve some of the best food in Melaka without either so you won’t miss them!

Best Indian restaurants in Melaka:

  • Restaurant D’ Tandoori House – for tasty North Indian food, this is one of the best restaurants in Melaka
  • Selvam Restaurant – this longstanding eatery is the best place for curry on a banana leaf
  • Restoran Saravanna (Chettinadu King) – with generous portions and excellent chai masala and lassis, this is a must-visit for South Indian food.

Top 17 Foods to Try in Melaka

Malacca city is the capital of the state of Malacca, on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. With a rich historical and cultural background from previous Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, visiting this place gives you a unique experience. The city centre was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in July 2008, along with Georgetown in Penang.

I am an avid traveler and Melaka is one of my favorite places on earth. Besides its popular historical attractions, friendly and hospitable people and cheap and cozy hotels I just adore the local food. I am a picky eater. Food is something saint for me. I can skip my night sleep or an important appointment, but I will never, never skip my meal!

First of all my food must have an accurate and attractive plating; then the taste should be delicious and memorable; so memorable that I would want to return to that place over and over again for another food hunt. So here’s my summarized list of the top 17 food to eat in Melaka. I feel these dishes represent Melaka as a whole as there are a wide variety of Chinese, Malay and Nyonya (a combination of Chinese and Malay culture) styles of cooking. This gives you an overall taste of the best Melaka has to offer.

This is a dish of Chinese origin, and is most commonly associated with Hainanese, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisines. As I wrote earlier I like to eat. And chicken is one of my favorite ingredients. Here in Melaka, you’ll find something that is not commonly available in other parts of Malaysia, the chicken rice ball. The rice is first boiled in chicken soup with other seasonings. When cooked, it is rolled in a ball that gives the unique look and texture. You must try the Chung Wah’s one. Little chicken rice balls are very yummy, and the chicken is very tender!

Some prefer flavorful, well roasted but soft lean pork meat. Others are mad about fatty meat with crispy, sweet flavors. But most people like the delicious sweet and savory gravy that is poured over the char siew slices and hot rice. You can find any type of Char Siew Rice you desire. Melaka is full of various cooking styles. I enjoyed the Char Siew Rice served at Boon Leong Food Court (popularly known as Bunga Raya Food Court). Their Char Siew sauce is thicker and tastes nicer.

melaka food tour

You can easily find good-tasting nasi lemak in Melaka. The one that I tried at New Wang Food Court had fluffy and fragrant rice and the side dishes were very good. The owner named the stall as “Nasi Lemak” so what do you think the signature dish is:?

Nancy’s Kitchen , Riverine Coffeehouse and Calanthe Art Café serves some of the best nyonya laksa in town.

melaka food tour

Tengkera Duck Noodle Restaurant is known for the Malacca-style Duck Noodles and I had a choice of soup or dry noodles. The latter is tossed in thick gravy and topped with shredded duck meat. This comes with small bowl of soup. The soup version is also decent – it really depends on whether you’re a soup or dry noodles person.

Soon Yen, some locals call it ‘under the big tree’ food court, along Jalan Tengkera offers delicious duck noodles too.

melaka food tour

One of my favorite places to try asam pedas is Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine . You can also try it in other restaurants such as Asam Pedas Claypot and Cottage Spices Nyonya Restaurant .

melaka food tour

Some of the sambal foods that are so irresistible include sambal sotong, sambal ikan bilis, sambal kangkong and sambal chicken. The above-mentioned Nyonya restaurants are 4 of my favorite places whenever I want to get the authentic sambal taste. Yummy!!

melaka food tour

This is a dish where an assortment of raw and semi-cooked seafood, meat (including raw meat) and vegetables on skewers are dunked into a hot boiling pot of satay gravy. The best Satay Celup is at Capitol Satay . The long queue may turn you off and some may not like the taste but for me, it is nice and worth to wait. Don’t let the outlook of the restaurant disgust you as it is an old restaurant. Let’s just say they don’t have the need to renovate it as it is already insanely popular.

If you are tired of standing and waiting for 1-2 hours just to find a seat, you can get an alternative at McQuek’s Satay Celup .

melaka food tour

Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dish consisting of roasted chicken prepared with yogurt and spices. The name comes from the type of cylindrical clay oven, tandoor, in which the dish is traditionally prepared. Two of the good places to eat the best tandoori is Pak Putra Tandoori Naan and Restaurant D’ Tandoori House . Their tandoori is so tender and I highly recommend it! The naan, a leavened, oven-baked flatbread, boasts a smoky flavor from the tandoori with slightly charred edges. Very tasty, especially when eaten with the tender, flavorful chicken.

melaka food tour

I like the satay taste at Sun May Hiong Satay House as the sour-sweet-spicy sauce is just the right accompaniment to the meat.

melaka food tour

Oh yeah, it’s called “fried oyster omelet” too – due to the big amount of eggs. Oysters are fresh and although not big in size, the generous amount makes up for it. As for myself, I got to say that I enjoyed eating it. The eggs are simply delicious, and I actually care about the oysters – I just loved them. Fried oysters can be found in some Melaka food courts and the one that I like most is at the stall in Bunga Raya Food Court .

melaka food tour

Also known as top hats, Pai Tee is a crunchy flour cup filled with julienned vegetables, omelet and fried shallots. These tiny treats went very well with the chili sauce provided. Simply pop it into your mouth and enjoy its crunchiness. The ‘hats’ were quite small – I could have polished all 5 pieces easily. Nancy’s Kitchen is the place that amazed me with these little yummy things.

melaka food tour

I just love the authentic taste of Nyonya Kuih at Nancy’s Kitchen . For takeaway, drive over to Baba Charlie Nyonya Cakes located in a residential area which is frequented by locals and widely reported on media.

melaka food tour

This is a traditional dessert made from shaved ice, coconut milk, green starched noodles with pandan flavoring and palm sugar. Other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included. Each spoonful leaves behind a lingering sweetness and a creamy aftertaste from the fresh coconut milk. You should try it at Jonker 88 !

melaka food tour

Mille crêpe is a French cake made of many crêpe layers. The word mille means “a thousand”, implying the many layers of crêpe. Go into Nadeje , but don’t expect to see a 1000-layer cake. You won’t find any. Here’s what to expect — about twenty lacy crêpes layered with fresh cream and custard.

The top crepe is usually sprinkled with sugar and flambéed until the surface caramelises. The cream was delicate yet firm enough, and the cake didn’t collapse at the plunge of a fork. The crepes were thin and crisp at the sides, and digging into the cake was like shovelling through snow. Light and luscious, each bite yielded a smoky sugar coat with refined layers of crepe and cream. Sounds yummy to you – go and try it!

melaka food tour

This is a Fujian/Chaozhou-style fresh spring roll. The popiah is one of the better ones in Melaka, where the egg wrap is generously filled with ingredients, sweet sauce and piquant chili sauce. Good stuff! The egg-skin wrap was of just the right thickness and held the popiah together nicely. Moist, generously filled and full of oomph from the chili sauce – what’s not to like? Baba Low and Nancy’s Kitchen is the right place for this authentic delicates.

melaka food tour

One of my readers suggest to review and include the coconut milkshake at Klebang in the list of best Melaka food. I personally went to the place and ordered one with ice cream. The recipe looks simple. It is a concoction of coconut water, flesh, ice cube and vanilla ice cream blended together in a mixer.

The resulting taste turned out to be exceptionally good! The natural sweet and creamy aftertaste with smoothie-like texture are soooo refreshing that one serving is not enough for me. I heard people love to drink this even on the rainy days. So imagine what would happen during the sweltering days…a very long queue!

These are my top 17 foods in Melaka. Some will make you laugh, some will make you cry, but all will make you hungry for more innovative meal hunts.

Read the dish name and try to remember if you ate it, with whom, where and when. I am sure you will have plenty of memories. Some may be sad, other happy, but all as a part of your life. In case you didn’t had a chance to try some of my favorite Melaka cuisines, just go for it.

You have missed some of important dishes of Melaka, like Ayam capitan from the nonya people also there is Ayam capitan from the Melaka Portuguese people.

You have missed the Melaka Portuguese cuisine dishes like curry debal, sotong permenta, caldu pescador, portugis Ikan bakar, you need to try go to Portuguese settlement and look for restorant Lisbon and ask for Julie and Noel Felix they can prepare a off the menu meal that will blow your mind

Thanks for sharing other Melaka cuisine. The reason that we don’t include De Lisbon restaurant is because of the inconsistency of the food taste and the opening hours.

Best time to visit Malacca

Malacca weather is warm and tropical year-round, so itineraries should be planned accordingly. Like, schedule outdoor activities for mornings and evenings, and save indoor activities for afternoons. Travelers who arrive in April, May or October may find cooler afternoons and less humid conditions. Regular rains can be expected during March and April and also in October and November.

While the time of the year to visit Malacca is important for any itinerary, so is the day of the week. Jonker Street Night Market is can’t-miss attraction, and it’s only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

2-Day Malacca Itinerary | Day 2

Now that you’ve cruised the Malacca River by boat, it’s time to peruse the area by foot. The second and final day of your Malacca itinerary can be spent eating a traditional breakfast of chicken rice balls, strolling down the Malacca River Walk , which leads to an authentic Malay village, and photographing stunning mosques, one of which looks like it’s floating in the sea!

Breakfast of chicken rice balls

Chicken rice balls is a breakfast staple in Malacca , though these tasty nuggets are good any time of the day and super handy to have as snacks while sightseeing in Malacca City . The dish is legendary in Malacca , and there are many legends about how how the dish originated. Some say Hainanese immigrants used to pack their chicken and rice lunches into compact balls so that it would stay warm longer and also to have “quick energy” on hand while working long and strenuous hours. Other stories claim the workers were too poor to afford lunch boxes, so the rice balls – sometimes as big as tennis balls – were the most convenient way to transport their meals to work. While the original chicken rice balls often contained both chicken and rice, the modern-day version is served a little differently. Now, the flavorful chicken is served alongside rice balls and various vegetables, with a spicy chili dipping sauce on the side. Three highly recommended restaurants in Malacca are Chop Chung Wah , Hoe Kee Chicken Rice and Ee Ji Ban Restaurant .

Mid-morning stroll down Malacca River Walk

The Malacca River Walk is one of the city’s most peaceful attractions, and taking a stroll down its pathways is a must-do activity on any Malacca itinerary. The 1.6-kilometer path takes guests through scenic natural attractions, restored historic buildings and Instagram-worthy street art murals. Many of the historic buildings now house quaint coffee shops, modern hotels and popular restaurants, so lunch is easy to find on Malacca River Walk , and you can even grab a few souvenirs along the way.

  • Morten Village (Kampung Morten) – the Malacca River Walk leads to the entrance of Morten Village , a traditional Malay village containing more than 100 traditional Malay houses. The area is an important piece of Malacca’s cultural history and is a sight to see amidst the city’s commercial district. To preserve the site from inevitable demolition, Kampung Morten was declared a heritage village in 1989 under the city’s Preservation and Conservation Enactment. Tourists are welcome to explore the area on foot, but visitors should keep in mind that Morten Village is a residential neighborhood as well as a tourist attraction.

Afternoon: Mosques tours

Unique mosques and places of worship can be seen throughout Malacca City . You’re bound to notice several ornate religious buildings while trekking through popular neighborhoods in Malacca . While you’re out and about, you should make it a point to stop by some of the more historical religious sites in Malacca City , and you can’t miss a trip to the Floating Mosque at sunset.

  • Cheng Hoon Teng Temple , 25, Jalan Tokong, Kampung Dua – this 17th-century Chinese temple features intricately carved woodwork and traditional architecture.
  • Kampung Kling Mosque , behind Cheng Hoon Teng Temple – this historic mosque is admired for its Asian-inspired architecture and fountain.
  • Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple , No: 5 to 11, Jalan Tukang Emas – this colorful Hindu temple was built in 1781 and is the oldest functioning Hindu temple in all of Malaysia.
  • Melaka Straits Mosque (Masjid Selat Melaka) – often referred to as the Floating Mosque, the Melaka Straits Mosque is a picturesque religious site that is built over the waters of the Malacca Strait on the southern coast of Malacca Island . The mosque is especially stunning to photograph at night, as it is illuminated in a colored lighting scheme, but a daytime view also guarantees an Instagram-worthy pic.

Worthington Farmers Market, Columbus Food Adventures voted as the best in the country

Local produce at the farmers market in Worthington.

The Worthington Farmers Market is to open its summer season May 4 with a major honor to its credit. It has been voted by readers of USA TODAY as the nation's best farmers market.

They must be doing something right at the market that runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon along a stretch of High Street in Old Worthington. The Worthington Farmers Market topped outdoor markets that operate along the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, and at an oceanfront park in Honolulu.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket had been voted No. 1 in USA TODAY's 10 best reader polls for three straight years. This was the first year Worthington's market was nominated by a panel of travel writers and other experts.

More farmers markets: When do area farmers markets open? Here's a guide to where and when to go

The result of reader votes were announced today.

"Nearly 100 vendors from the Columbus area converge for the year-round Worthington Farmers Market that adapts to the seasons," USA TODAY wrote.

"In summer, May through October, farmers and producers of high-quality food and plants sell al fresco in the Old Worthington Historic District. The rest of the year, the market goes indoors at The Shops at Worthington Place."

The last indoor market takes place Saturday before it moves outdoors for summer.

Organizers say the Worthington Farmers Market, which began in 1987, should have its highest number of vendors ever this summer.

Columbus Food Adventures another favorite

Another favorite of Columbus foodies also was voted as the nation's best by USA TODAY readers. Columbus Food Adventures , which leads geography and cuisine-based food tours in Columbus and its suburbs, topped a list of nominees that included tours in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans and Chicago.

Here's how Columbus Food Adventures was described by USA TODAY: "From neighborhood walking tours to by-van excursions and private tours, Columbus Food Adventures offers a full menu of ways to meet the area's rich culinary scene. Whether you're a meat-lover, brew-hound, taco fiend or gastronomic globe-trotter, there's a tour to fit your appetite."

Walking tours include the Short North, German Village, Grandview Avenue, Dublin and Old Worthington, while van tours hit local taco trucks or a variety of international restaurants.

Results of a third USA TODAY reader vote also were announced. Budd Dairy Food Hall , the Italian-Village collection of bars and restaurants in an old milk-bottling plant, finished at No. 3 in voting for the nation's best food hall.

Mother Road Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished at the top in national voting, while the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis finished second.

Budd Dairy was ranked sixth in a list of the best U.S. food halls posted by the global travel site Big 7 Travel .

Take a Tour of the Chic Paris Apartment with Views of the Eiffel Tower on Food Network’s Next Baking Master: Paris

In the new Food Network series, premiering May 6, U.S. bakers travel to France to compete for the title of Next Baking Master

American cooks are saying bonjour to France in Food Network’s latest competition series, Next Baking Master: Paris .

Hosts Stephanie Boswell and Ludo Lefebvre are bringing 10 bakers to the City of Lights to learn, taste and bake French pastries. PEOPLE has an exclusive look at the first episode, which premieres on May 6. In it, the bakers tour the stunning Parisian apartment they will stay in after full days of croissants and macaroons.

The 10 competitors eagerly hop out of their cars to see the apartment. After pushing through grand entryway doors, they trudge up a beautiful, winding staircase — giving each other words of encouragement to make it upstairs with their large luggage.

“I’m sweating,” one contestant says. Another chef replies, “I think it’ll all be worth it.”

As soon as they open the doors, they learn it was in fact, worth it. The group awes at the sunlight-filled apartment with colorful artwork on the walls, wooden pillars in the living rooms and marble fireplaces.

“We are chic here,” says Paige, a chef from Brooklyn.

Food Network

The views may be even more stunning than the interior. Everyone takes turns admiring their unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower, which can be seen from their living room windows and from the balconies.

The contestants take a lackadaisical approach to choosing their specific rooms because they are all equally beautiful. Two chefs look out of the window to see a grandiose French street.

“Are you kidding me? I’m literally red,” says one chef, blushing from excitement.

For some contestants, being in France and competing on Next Baking Master: Paris is a massive milestone.

“This is kind of a dream for me, you know, being in Paris,” says Robert, a baker from Philadelphia. “You know, I grew up in a rough neighborhood in Philly and poor. It's so easy to be inspired here.”

To celebrate their abode and the start of the competition, the cast pops a bottle of champagne and clink their drinks for a “cheers” to Next Baking Master.

“May the sweetest one win,” one chef adds.

Every week, the 10 bakers will visit iconic pastry shops, like Ladurée, and be mentored by famous French chefs. Weekly baking challenges will send the lowest scoring chef back to America until a winner is crowned and given a full suite of kitchen appliances and baking equipment valued at $25,000.

Next Baking Master: Paris premieres May 6 at 9 p.m. ET on Food Network.
