What to Wear in Mexico

Mexico offers a wide range of climates, including tropical, desert, and sea levels, as well as high altitudes. There are typically two seasons: the dry season (Nov to April) and the rainy season (May-Oct).

While inland cities have more variable weather patterns, coastal areas are comfortable all year long. All year round, high-altitude regions are colder.

For coastal destinations, bring lightweight, breezy clothing; for inland towns and cooler areas, bring layers. Always dress in a way that respects the traditions of the area.

Mexico’s summers can be humid and hot, particularly around the coast. It’s crucial to pack lightweight, breathable clothing that will keep you cool and dry if you want to stay trendy and comfortable. Here are some suggestions for summer attire in Mexico:

  • Loose-fitting clothing: Choose loose tops , skirts , and shorts made of airy materials like cotton , linen , or rayon. By allowing air to flow over your body, these fabrics will help keep you cool.
  • Light-colored clothing: The sun’s rays are reflected by light-colored clothing, which might keep you cooler than dark-colored apparel. Choose whites, pastels, or other light colors for a light, summery look.
  • Sun protection: To protect your skin and eyes from the harsh Mexican sun, don’t forget to take sunscreen , sunglasses , and a hat . Choose hats with broad brims that will protect your face and neck from the sun.
  • Swimwear: Bring a swimsuit , a cover-up, and flip-flops if you intend to spend time at the beach or pool. Choose a swimsuit that fits your body type, gives you confidence, and makes you feel good about yourself.
  • Comfortable shoes: Be sure to have good walking shoes because Mexico’s cobblestone streets can be hard on your feet. Shoes , sneakers , or sandals are all suitable footwear choices.
  • Lightweight jacket: The temperature might drop at night despite being high throughout the day. If the temperature decreases, bring a thin jacket or cardigan to keep you warm.

Remember to pack light, loose-fitting clothing in bright colors when preparing for a summer trip to Mexico. Remember to bring sunscreen, swimsuits, comfy shoes, and a light jacket for chilly evenings. You’ll be prepared to take advantage of everything Mexico has to offer if you include these necessities in your suitcase!

With more moderate temperatures and lesser humidity than the summer, fall is a great season to travel to Mexico. Yet, because the weather might still be unpredictable, it’s crucial to pack appropriately. Here are some suggestions for fall attire in Mexico.

  • Light layers: It’s recommended to wear light clothing that can be added or removed easily because the weather can be cool in the morning and evening yet warm throughout the day. A t-shirt or blouse , pants or sho r ts , and a lightweight sweater , cardigan , or jacket can work well together.
  • Comfortable shoes: Comfortable shoes are essential because Mexico’s streets and walkways can be uneven and cobblestoned. Good options include sandals , flats , and sneakers with supportive arches .
  • Sun protection: Be sure to bring sunscreen , sunglasses , and a ha t to protect your skin and eyes because the Mexican sun may still be very powerful even in the fall.
  • Rain gear: In Mexico, the fall months can be rainy, especially near the coast. Just in case, bring a small umbrella or raincoat .
  • Neutral colors: Black, white, beige, and blue are timeless neutral colors that go well with many other hues. Use accessories like scarves or jewelry to provide a pop of color.
  • Respectful attire: It’s important to dress respectfully when visiting religious sites or cultural significance. Avoid wearing anything too exposing and keep your knees and shoulders covered.

Bring light clothes, comfy shoes, and sun protection for a fall trip to Mexico. For simple mixing and matching, use neutral colors and, if necessary, add rain gear.

While visiting places of worship or cultural institutions, keep your dress code in mind.

You’ll be prepared to take advantage of everything Mexico has to offer in the fall if you include these necessities in your suitcase!

Mexico is a popular travel destination in the spring because of the warm temperatures and lesser humidity than in the summer. Yet, because the weather might still be unpredictable, it’s important to pack appropriately. Here are some suggestions for springtime attire in Mexico.

  • Lightweight layers: It’s vital to bring lightweight layers that you can add or remove because spring in Mexico can be warm and sunny throughout the day but chilly in the mornings and evenings. A fantastic alternative is a light sweater or jacket worn with a t-shirt or blouse, jeans , or shorts .
  • Breathable fabrics: It’s a good idea to wear clothing made of breathable materials like cotton or linen because Mexico may get extremely humid. You’ll be comfy and cool all day long thanks to this.
  • Comfortable footwear: It’s important to wear comfortable shoes with adequate traction because Mexico’s streets and sidewalks can sometimes be uneven and slippery. Flats , sandals , or sneakers with strong arch support are all excellent options.
  • Sun protection: Be careful to carry sunscreen , sunglasses , and a hat to protect your skin and eyes because springtime in Mexico may be rather sunny.
  • Rain gear : In Mexico, spring can also bring some rain, especially along the shore. A lightweight raincoat or umbrella should be brought along just in case.
  • Respectful attire: It’s crucial to dress respectfully when visiting religious or cultural places in Mexico . Avoid wearing anything too exposing and keep your knees and shoulders covered.

Any time of year, even in the winter, is a lovely time to travel to Mexico. Make careful to pack correctly for the colder weather if you’re thinking of visiting Mexico in the winter. Here are some suggestions for winter attire in Mexico:

  • Sweaters: Bring some thin sweaters that you may wear on top of t-shirts or blouses . This will keep you warm while still making it simple to take off layers if the weather gets warmer.
  • Jackets : For chilly evenings in Mexico, a light jacket or denim jacket is ideal. Consider bringing a heavier coat if you’re going somewhere colder.
  • Scarves : Scarves are a fantastic fashion and warmth item. For warmth on cold days, look for scarves made of wool or other warm materials.
  • Jeans: A versatile wardrobe essential, jeans may be dressed up or down. On chilly days, they’ll also keep you warm.
  • Boots: Bring some knee-high or ankle boots to keep your feet warm and dry. They’re a fantastic choice for fancier situations as well.
  • Hats : For cool days in Mexico, a warm hat is a necessity. Choose a design that goes well with your attire and keeps your head warm.
  • Gloves : Consider bringing along a pair of gloves to keep your hands warm if you plan on spending time outdoors.

It’s important to check the weather prediction for the area you’ll be going to before packing for Mexico in the winter. While some parts of Mexico, like the Yucatan Peninsula, get warmer weather year-round, other parts, like Mexico City, can experience very cold temperatures.

Even in the winter, with the correct attire, you can take advantage of everything Mexico has to offer.

Mexico Packing List - suitcase for Mexico - backpack for Mexico

Luggage & Bags for Mexico Packing

Your packing list for Mexico should start with a reliable suitcase or travel backpack – whether you’ll be traveling carry-on only or checking a bag.

A backpack as a personal item can do double duty as a day pack for adventures. If you’re traveling to a big city, you might also want a crossbody purse with security features. Check out this selection of essential travel bags and packing aids for your Mexico itinerary.

Click the photos and links below for more info on my top gear recommendations!

  • Checked suitcase: Rather than a spinner suitcase for Mexico, I recommend one with inline wheels. These are better for uneven surfaces and treks from bus stations (why hello, charming but wonky cobblestone streets!) . For a while I’ve traveled with an Osprey Sojourn 80L , which has straps to convert into a backpack. Gonex also makes an affordable and sturdy rolling duffel that comes in three sizes, from 50L weekender to a 100L bag for a long trip. If you’re looking for a sleeker bag for resorts, check out these Delsey spinner suitcases .

Gonex Rolling Duffle Bag with Wheels, 70L Water Repellent Wheeled Travel Duffel Luggage with Rollers 25 inch, Navy

  • Backpack : A backpack is a must-have for day trips! Even if you’ll be staying at a resort, you’re likely to set off on an adventure one day. The Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack and Sea to Summit Nano Pack both fold down into a tiny pocket. G4free also makes a great budget lightweight pack . If you’ll need a bag with anti-theft features for city trips, consider this option from Pacsafe or this stylish pack from XD Design with a strap that slides over a suitcase handle for transit.

XD Design Bobby Compact Anti-Theft Laptop USB Backpack (Unisex Bag) (Navy)

  • Carry Ons: If you prefer to fly carry-on only with a backpack, check out the adventure-favorite Osprey Porter pack in 30L and 46L sizes . If you’re looking for sleeker bags for a resort getaway, Delsey makes lightweight, stylish spinner suitcases in a 21-inch carry on . And this cute weekender bag holds a ton and has a pocket that slides over a suitcase handle.

DELSEY Paris St. Tropez Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Pink, Carry-on 21 Inch

  • Crossbody Bag: For crossbody bags with anti-theft features, I always recommend Pacsafe and Travelon . From sling bags to small crossbody purses and hobo bags , they come in a variety of sizes and styles to keep your stuff secure.

Travelon AT Classic Sling Bag, Black, One Size

  • Packable bag for shopping: I always tuck a foldable shopping bag into my suitcase and end up using it for souvenir shopping, grocery store trips, etc. Sling makes a cool crossbody bag , or Chicobag and Flip and Tumble are two other durable but inexpensive options.
  • Packing aids: To help stay organized and pack lighter, I use a few packing aids on every trip I take. Zippered mesh pouches can keep cords and other essential items sorted in your carry on. And packing cubes will keep your suitcase organized. Check out eBags and Gonex plus these compression cubes . (I try to stick to small and medium sizes so I don’t overpack!)

ChicoBag rePETe Crossbody Sling with Carabiner Clip | Recycled Crossbody Bag | Eco Friendly | Green Coral

  • Jewelry pouch: leave flashy jewelry at home, and travel with just a few inexpensive pieces.  I always throw my jewelry pouch in my carry-on. If you’re headed to a resort, you might want a jewelry roll to hold a few more pieces.
  • Toiletry/cosmetics bag: Hanging toiletry bags are great when your hotel doesn’t have a lot of bathroom counter space. If you’re traveling carry-on only, you might want a smaller zipper cosmetic pouch or lay-flat cosmetic bag with a jewelry pocket .

Lay-n-Go Cosmo Drawstring Cosmetic & Makeup Bag Organizer, Toiletry Bag for Travel, Gifts, and Daily Use, 20 inch, Ocean Blue

  • Travel wallet/passport organizer: When I travel, I have a passport organizer travel wallet that I use in transit.  Then after I arrive, I use a smaller wallet for some cash, driver’s license, and a photocopy of my passport.  I keep my passport, ATM/credit cards, and other cash in the hotel safe.  (In some countries including Mexico, travelers should keep your passport on your person; but this isn’t always practical or safe.)

Packing List for Mexico - What to Wear In Mexico

What to Wear in Mexico

Mexican style includes everything from traditional dresses to fashionable jeans and stylish tops. Most Mexicans dress more modestly, including wearing jeans and pants even in the warmest months. Packing dresses, lightweight long pants, and capris will help you blend in more, especially outside of coastal areas.

At tourist sites you’ll likely see travelers wearing shorts and tank tops, but this is not common for locals.

Essential Clothes for Mexico Packing Lists

I’ll share more tips below for specific destinations and activities, but these clothing items have been on all of my lists of what to wear in Mexico!

Click the images or links for more information and be sure to add these things to your travel packing list.

  • Sun hat: No matter where you go in Mexico, you’ll probably be closer to the Equator than you’re used to – which means stronger rays. (OK, I am not a scientist, just a lifelong pale person!) But don’t be caught without a good hat in Mexico. A straw hat with a wide brim is perfect for resort situations. I personally can’t stop buying packable fedoras for vacation adventures. Shade your face in style with these cuties below!

Wallaroo Hat Company – Women’s Waverly Trilby Fedora – Short Brim, Packable Design and Adjustable Sizing for Medium Crown Sizes – Trendy and Chic Sun Hat for Casual All-Season Style (Mixed Brown)

  • Scarf : A scarf is another must-have Mexico item. They’ll provide extra shade with style and a light cover on breezy evenings. Plus, you’ll have it at the ready if you stop into a cathedral and want to cover up your shoulders. Some shawls even are made from UPF fabric to protect against the sun’s rays. And a scarf with a hidden pocket is a great security item for city sightseeing.

Coolibar UPF 50+ Women's Bhakti Sun Shawl - Sun Protective (One Size- Charcoal)

  • Maxi dress , romper, or jumpsuit : No matter where you go in Mexico, I feel like a maxi dress or a jumpsuit is always something that works for an evening out.

VERABENDI Off The Shoulder Long Ruffle Summer Beach Maxi Dresses for Women with Pockets

  • Bathing suit and cover up: most Mexico itineraries include a beach, but city hotels might also have a pool. If your itinerary includes mostly beach/resort days, be sure to bring 2-3 bathing suit/cover up combos since that will make up a big part of your wardrobe!

La Blanca Women's Standard Island Goddess High Neck Keyhole Mio One Piece Swimsuit, Black, 4

  • Sweater or light jacket : I recommend a jacket or cardigan for your flight and if you’re headed to higher elevation cities (like Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Cristobal de las Casas, San Miguel de Allende, Puebla, Oaxaca City). Even beach destinations can get cool in the evenings during the winter months. If you’ll visit during the rainy season, bring a packable rain jacket or travel umbrella .

Amazon Essentials Women's Long-Sleeve Open-Front Cardigan, Grey Heather, X-Small

  • Footwear: When planning what shoes to pack for Mexico, you’ll need to think through your specific itinerary, of course. But you’ll definitely need comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing. I recommend a pair of sneakers for flights and sights, hiking sandals for activities like ruins and cenotes, and a nicer pair of flip flops or sandals for evenings. Sketchers Go Walks are comfy lightweight slip-on sneakers that pack easily. Keen Whisper Sandals are my favorite hiking sandals – they provide a little bit of traction for slippery places like cenotes, and you can even swim in them. And of course, they’re perfect for hiking trips.

Allbirds Women’s Tree Runners Everyday Sneakers, Machine Washable Shoe Made with Natural Materials - Mist (White Sole) - 10 Medium

  • Jeans/leggings: If you wear jeans or leggings on the flights, you’ll have them for cool evenings too if needed.
  • Pajamas, workout clothes, and underwear : Be sure to pack a pair of lightweight pajamas. If you have a patio or balcony, you might want to laze with your morning coffee and view! And of course, be sure to pack bras and underwear. I always throw a pair of quick-dry undies in my carry on; not glam, but they’re practical if your luggage is delayed.

ExOfficio Women's Give-N-Go Bikini Brief - Large - Black

Electronics Travel Accessories to Pack for Mexican Vacations

  • Portable power bank : A rechargeable power bank is perfect for flights and day trips to keep your devices charged.
  • Extra phone charger cord and plug: You never know if you’ll have an outlet close to the bed, so bring an extra plug and a long charger cord .
  • Personal door alarm : If you’re a solo traveler, consider an electronic door alarm if that will help you sleep more soundly.
  • Kindle : Use your lounge time to catch up on some reading. The newest Paperwhites are waterproof as well as easy to read in bright sunlight.
  • Hotspot : Internet can be spotty in some parts of Mexico (I’m looking at you, Tulum) . For casual use you should be OK, but consider a hotspot if teleworking from Mexico.
  • Smartphone : be sure to check out all my recommended apps for Mexico travel below to help you plan and manage your trip.
  • Camera : Today’s phones get great photos! If you want underwater or action videos, bring along a video camera like a GoPro.  Check out this top-rated budget option under $65.

(Sign up with my links for extra bonus miles when you reach a set $$ spend within the first 3 months.)
  • Cash (be sure to travel with some US$ just in case there are issues with ATMs on arrival)

pack list for mexico - toiletries for mexico

Toiletries & Essential Items: Mexico Packing Checklist

These are must-haves for most Mexico destinations.  I’ve included links to Amazon items that have quick shipping so you’ll have them in time for your trip.

  • Water bottle: a reusable water bottle is a must-have in Mexico since you should not drink tap water.  Instead, you can fill a reusable bottle at your hotel from a dispenser or bottled water.  I travel with a collapsible bottle that has a carabiner clip , but you might prefer a water bottle with a built-in filter .  Or an insulated tumbler with a straw is perfect for lounging on the beach or around the pool, especially at resorts.
  • Tissue packs: you never know when you’re going to need some extra tissues or toilet paper while adventuring in Mexico.
  • Tampons and feminine hygiene products : I strongly encourage women to pack a supply, even if you think you won’t need them. Tampons are not as commonly used in Mexico, and even in tourist areas they can be difficult or impossible to find. I have never seen menstrual cups sold, and sanitary pads are not the same quality as those available in the U.S. If you need to purchase these items, go to a pharmacy or large store like a WalMart.
  • Sink laundry packets: I always keep a few Tide soap packets in my toiletry bag for washing out swimsuits.
  • Insect repellent: After having been nearly consumed by mosquitos on one fateful Tulum trip, I now bring a carry-on sized spray bottle of bug repellent plus some towelettes in my purse.
  • Sunscreen and/or r eef-safe sunscreen: Whether you’re headed to Baja California, Mexico City, or the Riviera Maya, you’ll need some serious sunscreen to protect your skin. My favorite face sunscreens are Biore UV Aqua Rich (I first discovered in Thailand and now order from Amazon ) and Neutrogena Age Shield Face Lotion . Sun Bum is a great brand that makes tons of different sunscreen formulas . For snorkeling, be sure to bring a sunscreen that’s reef-friendly .
  • After-sun or aloe: Aloe vera gel can be hard to find at shops in Mexico.  (Seriously, I once started looking at landscaping to see if I could find an aloe plant!)   Check out cooling lotions too from Sun Bum and Burt’s Bees .
  • Spray conditioner: Another seaside must-have, leave-in spray conditioner is great for tangles from windy beach walks and post-snorkeling.
  • Anti-chafe balm: Combat thigh “chub rub” with this convenient stick .
  • First Aid kit: Be sure to pack a basic first aid kit with bandaids, neosporin, and over-the-counter medications like pain reliever, anti-diarrheal, and Dramamine.
  • Earplugs: A set of earplugs can help you sleep in, rather than waking up to the sounds of the jungle (or nearby hotel maintenance).
  • Sleep mask: Thatched roof cabanas and seaview rooms are great, but sometimes you want to sleep in on vacay.
  • Lock for hostel: If you’ll stay in a hostel, don’t forget a combo lock to secure your locker.
  • Poo-Pourri : a must-have when sharing a hotel room.
  • Cosmetics & cosmetics bag
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Travel bottles
  • Sanitizer/ Antibacterial wipes
  • Tampons / menstrual cup
  • Medication/contraceptives
  • Luggage tags
  • Extra glasses/contacts
  • Chapstick with SPF
  • Hand lotion
  • Wide tooth comb / Wet brush

Whether you’re headed to an all-inclusive resort in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, or the Riviera Maya, this list will help you figure out what to pack for beach vacations at Mexico all-inclusive resorts. Be sure to check any required attire for restaurants and evening entertainment. Click the images and links for more info or to shop any of the looks below!

  • 3 cover-ups: For cover-ups, consider options that double as a dress or skirt to save packing space.  At all-inclusive resorts, they will often not allow swimwear in restaurants; at some, you might be able to get around that with dress cover-up.  I recommend bringing one cover-up with UPF fabric (or a swim shirt ) so you can still hang by the resort pool if you get too much sun early in the trip.

Women's Summer Maxi Dress Casual Boho Sleeveless Spaghetti Strap Long Beach Sun Dresses(XXL,Red Black)

  • Capris/shorts and tops for sightseeing
  • Casual daytime dresses

Havaianas Women's Top Tiras Flip Flop Sandal, Rose Nude, 7-8

  • Glamorous sun hat: you’ll need one, and you should wear it on the plane to get in a vacay mood!

Planned a trip with snorkeling adventures or a lot of beach time? Add these items to your Mexico beach packing list – these essentials are perfect for destinations like Cancun, Tulum, Holbox, Playa del Carmen, Bacalar, La Paz, Cabo, Riviera Nayarit, and the Oaxaca Coast.

  • Beach chair safe: as a solo traveler, I totally love these small beach safes that attach to a beach chair. They have room for your phone, keys, sunnies and cash.
  • Microfiber towel: Avoid the stress of sneaking one out of your hotel and pack a quick-dry towel.
  • Dry bag: I bought my first dry bag in Thailand, and have brought one along on every aquatic adventure since!  Just stash your stuff inside, roll, and press down to let out the air.  Clasp and you’re set!  It can double as a wet bag on the trip home if you have a towel or suit that isn’t dry. This dry bag comes with a waterproof phone case too.

  • Beach tote: Don’t get caught without a cute beach tote! Check out this sand-free mesh beach bag too.

  • Cover-up/sarong: For excursions, I especially like this UPF cover up for the return trip.
  • UPF rash guard shirt + pants: If you’re going to spend a lot of time in the water, you might want a UPF rash guard shirt and UPF tights .  Especially if you’ll be snorkeling a lot, the tights can save you from a very burned bum!  (I speak from experience)  Athleta has a great selection of UPF sun protection clothing too.

  • Sunglasses: take your favorite pair and a spare.
  • Headband/gaiter: I have a UPF headband in my snorkeling gear. It protects my hairline from getting sunburnt, and keeps my hair out of the seal on my mask.
  • Underwater camera or Gopro: I travel with an Olympus Tough camera (you can check out photos here on my Belize trip ).  But some travelers might prefer an underwater action/video camera like a GoPro.  Check out this top-rated budget option under $65.
  • Waterproof phone pouch: if you just want to take beach photos, a floating phone pouch can keep your phone safe from water, salt, and sand.

Best Mexico Ruins - Zapotec Ruins of Monte Alban

What to Pack for Visiting Ruins in Mexico

Visiting ruins is one of my favorite activities in Mexico!  Whether you explore the iconic ancient ruins at Chichen Itza, seaside ruins at Tulum, or jungle ruins of Palenque, these essentials below will help you prepare for and enjoy your day trip.

Ruins tours are often combined with a stop afterwards at a cenote for cooling off (see next section below).  It’s possible to climb some ruins, so you might want to wear capris or at least shorts if you plan to do that.  Check out my guide to the best ruins in Mexico for tour recommendations and visit tips, including if you can climb them!

  • Pair of shorts: this is one place in Mexico where you’ll see a lot of people in shorts.
  • Breathable shirt or shirt with wicking fabric: it will be hot and you’ll work up a sweat walking throughout the site and climbing pyramids.
  • Sunscreen: be sure to bring at least a small bottle of sunscreen for your day out.
  • Reusable water bottle: this folding bottle is my fave.
  • Hat: a good sun hat is a must to shade your face and neck.
  • Lightweight backpack: if you don’t take a backpack as a carry-on, tuck one of these lightweight packs into your luggage.
  • Capri pants: if you’re klutzy like me, avoid scraped knees from climbing ruins with a pair of capri pants.

Hacienda Oxman - Cenote Oxman Valladolid Yucatan

What to Pack for Mexico Cenotes

Cenotes are limestone caverns formed by collapsing bedrock that then fills with fresh water.  The ancient Mayans revered them as portals to the underworld.  But today, they’re popular swimming spots for both locals and travelers.  Some cenotes are inside caves, while others are open to the sky. These items can help you enjoy your adventure:

  • UPF rashguard: many cenotes won’t allow sunscreen. A UPF rashguard shirt at open cenotes will protect you from the sun’s rays and be eco-safe.
  • Dry bag: cenotes are natural caverns (damp/drippy), so toss your towels and belongings in a dry bag .
  • Beach chair safe: some cenotes are an all-day affair (restaurant, deck chairs for lounging, etc). So bring along your beach chair safe if you packed one for your hotel.
  • Microfiber towel: they pack light and come in handy for all kinds of adventures.
  • Hiking sandals: how many times am I going to mention these sandals ? 😀 But seriously, they’re great for extra traction on slippery surfaces. Or try a pair of water shoes.
  • Waterproof camera: Get photos and video of your cenote adventure with an inexpensive action camera .

outfits for mexico city - packing list

What to Pack and Wear in Mexico City

Mexico City is a cosmopolitan city, but their street style is a little more casual and understated than you might expect. Jeans are definitely a staple, both for daytime wear and for evenings out with a jacket and nice top. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s hot here year-round, though: Mexico City’s altitude (7,000 feet above sea level) means that you’ll want a light sweater or jacket for early mornings and evenings even in the warmest months. Mexico City’s many museums are also well air-conditioned; take along a sweater. Plan to dress in layers during the colder months.

Weather in Mexico City

Mexico City’s best time to visit is March – June, when daily highs reach the mid-70’s and lows are in the 50’s. Expect little rainfall and sunny days. The rainy season begins in June and ends in September, with daily highs in the 70’s and lows in the mid-50’s. Mexico City’s coldest months are November – February, but highs can still rise into the range of 60-70 degrees F; lows can dip to 40F.

Mexico City is also a dry climate, so be sure to bring hand and face lotion, sunscreen, and lip balm with sunscreen. Pollution is also a problem in this busy city.

Packing Checklist for Mexico City

  • Denim jacket / light jacket or sweater
  • Jeans, leggings, or pants
  • Flats or sandals – I prefer to wear closed-toe shoes since streets in big cities can crowded and dusty
  • Sneakers for sightseeing
  • Dress for going out
  • Crossbody bag – keep it in front of you in crowded streets, markets, and subways
  • Sun hat for ruins sightseeing
  • Packable rain jacket during the rainy months (June – September)
  • Mid-weight coat during the coldest months (November – February)
  • Hand and face lotion, sunscreen, lip balm with sunscreen for the dry climate

Packing List for Mexico Pueblos (Small Towns)

In areas away from Mexico’s coasts, people will dress a little more conservatively, especially in small towns.  You most likely won’t see locals wearing shorts, even in the summer months. I tend to wear jeans, capri pants, and knee-length or midi skirts when traveling in small towns in Mexico. Of course bathing suits will be fine at the hotel pool, cenotes, etc.

In cities at higher elevations like San Miguel de Allende, San Cristobal de Las Casas, and Oaxaca City, you might want a lightweight coat during the winter months.

  • Pants or capris
  • Flats and sneakers for sightseeing
  • Crossbody bag
  • Light jacket
  • Midweight packable coat for cold months in cities at high elevations

What NOT to Pack for Mexico

Leave this stuff below at home – you won’t need it for your Mexico vacation packing list! Pack an extra cover-up or comfy shoes instead. 😉

  • Converter/adapter: Mexico has the same power voltage and outlets as the U.S. and Canada. Unless you’re traveling from outside North America, you won’t need a power converter or outlet adapter plugs.
  • Towels: if going to an all inclusive and staying on resort, these will be provided.
  • Shampoo, conditioner, soap: if your hotel or all-inclusive resort provides it.
  • Expensive jewelry: skip anything too flashy (even consider leaving diamond rings at home) and travel with inexpensive jewelry that can be replaced.
  • Large amounts of cash: plan to use ATMs if you are on a longer trip or backpacking.

Weather and Climate for Travel Destinations in Mexico

In addition to the tips in these Mexico packing lists, you should research the typical weather for your destination(s) during your visit. A good website to check is Holiday-Weather.com , which lets you check annual weather averages.

Although many areas have temperature fluctuations throughout the year, Mexico has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. In general, the rainy season runs from May – September, while the rest of the year sees little significant rainfall.

Hurricane Season in Mexico

Hurricane season in Mexico begins in June and continues through the end of November, but it peaks between August and October. Coastal areas are most affected by hurricanes, but even inland areas can experience rain and flooding as a result of a hurricane. If you choose to visit beach destinations during these months, I recommend to buy travel insurance and make hotel reservations that allow cancellations, just in case!

Weather Averages & What to Pack for by Region in Mexico

Mexico is a large country and has many different climates that vary by region. You can find lush jungles, tropical beaches, arid deserts, and even snow-capped mountains! Here’s an overview of what to expect based in some of the most popular vacation destinations. I’ve also included links to some of my most popular Mexico travel guides!

If you spend any time on this site, you know how much I love Mexico. So much so that I bought a house near Cabo San Lucas and spend 6-8 weeks a year there. My love of Mexico goes much deeper than that, though. I lived in a small state called Colima on the Pacific coast for a year, drove much of the country, and even got married in Mexico. Needless to say, I’m an expert on what to wear in Mexico and Mexico vacation outfit ideas !

Whether you’re planning your first trip to this beautiful country or you vacation yearly, you’ll want to make sure you are prepared for the weather. Luckily, it isn’t too difficult to pack for Mexico, once you know what to bring, and you have come to the right place for the perfect packing list on what to wear in Mexico!

Carry On vs Checked Bag

I’m a proud member of Team Carry On and have been since I massively overpacked for my honeymoon in Italy. In the Cabo San Lucas airport in particular, the baggage comes incredibly slowly, and makes for an annoying start to your vacation. Immigration moves pretty quickly, and then you stand around for 30-45 minutes waiting for your bags to come out. I haven’t flown through the PVR airport in a while and I’m unfamiliar with the Yucatan, but in Cabo at least, you will save massive time by not checking a bag.

However, if you’re on the fence, there are reasons that checking a bag can be beneficial in Mexico. You can purchase all the toiletries you need when you arrive, including sunscreen, at a supermarket or pharmacy. However, prices on everyday goods are higher in Mexico than in the US, and while I can get away with travel size toothpaste, I can never get away with travel size sunscreen. It’s just not enough for a trip of more than a couple of days. If you’re looking to minimize mundane errands on vacation or can’t stomach paying an extra $2 for a bottle of sunscreen, you may be better off checking a bag and bringing your own.

Hotel rooms in Mexico are generally pretty sizeable, especially in popular tourist destinations, and you should not have the same issues you might have in a European hotel room with a full size suitcase.

Does the Time of Year Affect What I Should Pack?

mexico trip outfit ideas

Well, in short, yes. Mexico’s climate does fluctuate somewhat throughout the year. If your plan, like many of us, is to catch ideal, sunny weather on your Mexican vacation, the best time of year to travel there is usually between November and April. The rainy season begins in July and lasts until October or November, depending on the area.

On the Pacific side, which includes destinations such as Cabo San Lucas in Baja California and Puerto Vallarta further south, the rainy season lasts until around the middle of October. The Yucatan Peninsula, which includes destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, often has rainy weather well into November. As a general rule, the coastal areas of Mexico will be dry from November to June, with an average temperature of 28 degrees celsius/82 degrees fahrenheit.

On the other hand, if your trip includes Northern or Central Mexico, you will want to ensure you pack warmer layers. Mexico City sits at a higher elevation, and so it will warm up during the day, but evenings and mornings will be much cooler. Colonial cities like San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato get downright cold in winter, though still sunny and beautiful.

Should I Worry About Dressing Conservatively in Mexico?

mexico trip outfit ideas

Mexico is not known to be a conservatively dressed country, despite having a strong Catholic influence. As long as you are sticking to the tourist areas, do not not worry about a certain dress code and you will see plenty of skin from visitors and locals alike. However, as a general rule, if you do venture out into historical or religious sites, such as a church, it is always seen as respectful to dress more conservatively. This is as easy as wearing a cardigan or jean jacket to cover your shoulders and arms, and/or wearing a longer dress.

Attire for All-Inclusive Resorts Versus Boutique Hotels

As a general rule, staying at an all-inclusive resort allows you plenty of opportunities to dress a little more formally more often for dinners and nightly entertainment. If you are staying at a smaller hotel, you may go out for a couple of nice dinners or experiences, but in general, you will probably be comfortable dressing in more casual wear. Keep this in mind as you are packing! For example, I might bring five or six nice dresses for an all-inclusive, and just two or three if our trip includes more exploring than wining and dining.

In the touristy beach destinations like Los Cabos and Tulum, resortwear has become a sport in itself. You can go as fanciful as you’d like, with bright colors, daring silhouettes, and statement jewelry and hats.

Anywhere outside the main tourist hubs, people will dress noticeably more casual, with jeans being the uniform of most locals. When dressing up, women may wear form-fitting trousers or a short dress and heels.

The Ultimate Packing List for Mexico

mexico trip outfit ideas

A Secure, Lightweight Bag that is Practical and Easy to Carry

Although I have never felt unsafe while vacationing in Mexico, petty theft can happen anywhere, and it is always better to be safe than sorry. A proper bag for carrying your most important belongings is the most important thing to remember on your Mexico packing list, because if you are not feeling comfortable or safe carrying these around while vacationing, you might be constantly checking to see if you still have your travel documents, travel insurance, phone, and other important items.

One option is this super reasonable anti-theft crossbody shoulder bag . With an adjustable shoulder strap, this compact sling bag worn over the chest has multiple compartments, is water resistant, and also includes an RFID blocking compartment. What is an RFID blocking compartment? Well, basically, it blocks electromagnetic signals from being emitted from your bag, preventing any personal identification, debit or credit card information from being fraudulently used. Whether or not you think this is necessary, it is becoming more and more common, and this low-profile, comfortable bag is definitely worth the great price.

The Travelon Anti-theft Classic Cross Body Bag is also a great choice for its slim design, locking straps and compartments, a slash-resistant shoulder strap, RFID blocking compartments, and an interior key clip with an LED light. I have this one and it has stood up well across multiple countries.

Finally, the Pacsafe brand has a great reputation for quality-made products. This Unisex 7 Liter Crossbody Bag is large enough to fit your camera or iPad mini, a small water bottle on either side, and can be worn across the chest or as a backpack. The only downside to this bag is that you need to purchase locks separately to lock the compartments.

Backpack for Hiking/Day Trips

If you will be going on a day tour or hike, bring along a comfortable but lightweight backpack to carry all of your essentials. This Deuter Speed Lite 25 backpack is a great option, and comes with a three-liter drinking bag. A backpack like this could also double as a carry-on bag, and you would be surprised how much you can fit in them!

Flowy Dresses and Skirts

mexico trip outfit ideas

Mexico’s culture is bright and fun, and so it is the perfect destination to include some brightly-colored tropical pieces to wear to the beach and on your nights out.

If you want to know a little secret, Amazon has a hidden fashion section called Tropical Punch , which is your one-stop shop for fun, bright pieces of clothing, just perfect for a tropical destination such as Mexico!

Take a look at this stunning floral-printed maxi-dress – the ruched design around the midsection makes it super flattering on just about any body shape. It comes in a variety of different colors, so this would be perfect to include in your Mexico vacation outfits. This flattering A-line off the shoulder tropical maxi dress would also be great for a nice dinner out.

For a shorter dress that has long sleeves but is nice and flowy, check out this very cute summer tunic dress that could be worn to the market or as evening wear.

Men’s Wear

mexico trip outfit ideas

For a men’s shirt with all the tropical vibes, check out this floral button down short-sleeve shirt.

If floral is not your thing, another great option for men’s shirts that still says Mexico and gives off Barbie and Ken vibes, is this fun white and pink striped shirt . It comes in many different color patterns if this color scheme doesn’t do it for you.

Cute Tops, Shorts and Flowy Pants that can be Mixed and Matched

Consider this your ‘capsule’ type wardrobe. It is great having some interchangeable pieces to choose from, to put together cute outfits depending on the weather and activity. One or two linen shirts are nice and breathable for the warm weather, and pair well with shorts, skirts or flowy pants. A Free People vacation top or Crochet eyelet top would pair really well with this pair of beige linen pants, light enough to wear in warm weather, but also providing more coverage for those cooler days or nights.

For men, these are perfect lightweight linen pants , and also come in a capri style .

For a nice pair of denim shorts that aren’t skin tight, this pair is perfect for strolling the streets or beaches of Mexico. I have (and love!) these because they go with everything. Add a couple of cute tank tops and you have a number of cute, casual outfits to put together.

Swimwear and Cover Ups

mexico trip outfit ideas

I always suggest packing more than one bathing suit on your Mexico beach vacation, and hey, they don’t take up much room, so why not pack three or four!

I have recently fallen in love with Sea Level Swim and I now have 3 of their bikinis. They are super high quality, flattering, and not too revealing for a mom in my late 30’s, yet still sexy. If you’re wondering what swim suits to wear in Mexico, this is my top recommendation.

I also have a large rotation of one-piece swimsuits that I take to Mexico, all of which I found on Amazon. My favorites are:

  • This super-flattering crossover one piece
  • This sexy suit with mesh panels that converts to a one-shoulder
  • This long-sleeve rash guard suit for my budding surf career
  • This preppy one-shoulder tankini
  • This stunning one piece with cutouts

I own and love all of those!

A staple in your beach bag is a cute bikini wrap perfect for beach days, so you can quickly cover up on your way back to grab another pina colada! This sheer chiffon wrap will fit in any sized beach bag and is colorful and fun, with all the Mexico vibes.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Many Destinations on the Pacific Coast have ideal conditions for surfing, such as the beaches of Puerto Escondito. If surfing is part of your itinerary, this Roxy Rash Guard long-sleeve UPF 50 top would be a great choice, or this beautifully printed one-piece rash guard (the one I have).

mexico trip outfit ideas

Men, check out these quick-dry swim trunks with a compression lining that keeps your shorts from sticking to you, two pockets on the outside, as well as one on the inside lining! This way, you can be sure not to miss a picture perfect moment while wading in the waves or catching some sun on the shore. (That being said, check out this two-pack waterproof phone case that you might want to use- it floats too!)

Comfortable Clothing for Hiking

If you will be going off the beaten path for a hike, some quick-dry clothing will be essential in the warm weather. Check out this basic Dry Fit t-shirt for running or hiking, and pack some breathable shorts or pants to go with it.

If you are traveling during the rainy season, weather can be unpredictable, and it is good to be prepared. Check out this men’s waterproof, breathable Columbia rain jacket that comes in a variety of colors. A similar women’s rain jacket that is waterproof, breathable, and super compact for fitting easily into your suitcase is this Columbia Women’s Arcadia jacket.

Light Layers

Natural, lightweight fabrics like cotton, linen and silk for your layers in Mexico will be breathable and comfortable even in the humid temperatures. A long, neutral colored cardigan that can be worn open and thrown over anything from denim shorts to dressy pants would be a great piece to pack for those cooler nights.

Another solid option is a jean jacket , which pairs perfectly with shorts and dresses.

A cute beach bag is essential for any beach trip. This hand woven straw shoulder bag is a great choice. Another good option is this large tote bag that can also easily carry a straw hat in the straps.

Grab this adorable Cult Gaia knockoff cane handbag for an evening out, or this woven basket bag that reminds me of a Prada one I obsessed over.

Footwear for Walking, the Beach and Nights Out

mexico trip outfit ideas

Taking at least two pairs of flip flops on your trip is always a good idea. These Olukai Ohana beach sandals are the perfect choice for a good-quality pair of flip flops. They are water-resistant and have gripped and cushioned soles. I have this pair in black and what I love most is that they have arch support, which keeps my feet comfortable all day.

I love to bring a pair of versatile sandals that can be either dressed up or down. These chunky, waterproof sandals from Reef are perfect for just about everything…they fit today’s style of chunky platform sandals with sundresses, and they would be equally perfect scrambling over beach rocks. They come in a variety of colors. If you prefer high heels for those nights out, these Steve Madden wedge heels would be a great choice, and their neutral color pairs them well with any outfit.

If your trip is going to include excursions or long city or market strolls, you will want to make sure you also have comfortable walking shoes. A breathable, lightweight shoe such as these Skechers Women’s Go Walk Sneakers would be an excellent choice for the hot weather. Also keep in mind that many places can be dusty, such as the Chichen Itza’s ruins and some of the markets, so to avoid dry, dusty feet a closed shoe would be best!

For a comfortable shoe for men that comes in a fun, bright print, check out these Merrell Alpine Sneakers. These would also be great if you are going on excursions such as visiting the Mayan Ruins. Another fun option would be these colorful and cushioned Asics running shoes.

A pair of Men’s sandals that would be perfect for the beach are these Reef flip flops , which are cushioned, waterproof, and don’t need a break-in period, so go ahead and grab them last minute for your trip!

Packable Hat

Hats don’t have to be awkward to travel with. This foldable straw sun hat is super cute, and will protect your head and face from those UV rays. I love that you can pair this with denim shorts during an excursion, and then with your floral maxi dress when you go out to dinner.

Your favorite luxury brands can all be found right here , with quick delivery to most places in the US or Canada. I love these Costa Del Mar Aviators – the rose-gold color and copper colored polarized frames will look great on tanned skin!

If you want the designer look without the price tag, there are some great dupes on Amazon, like these Celine cat eye dupes or these Krewe dupes .

A high SPF, waterproof sunscreen would be a good idea, such as this non-greasy Blue Lizard Duo Pack , which comes with a larger bottle as well as a travel-sized stick. This brand is also great because it is reef-friendly, paraben free, and scent-free.

What to Pack for Winter in Mexico

In addition to what we’ve listed above, in the winter months, I make sure to also pack:

  • A light jacket – when the sun goes down, even on the beach, the temperature drops quickly and you will be grateful for a jacket. I pack a jean jacket because they go so well with dresses.
  • A wet suit – if you’re planning to surf, the water temperature in winter is low enough (at least on the Pacific) that you’ll want a full-body wetsuit.
  • Lightweight long pants – Whether it’s enjoying coffee in the early mornings on the balcony or covering up after the pool, a pair of neutral, lightweight pants comes in handy.

What to Pack for Summer in Mexico

When summer rolls around, it will be HOT. That said, in desert climates like Cabo San Lucas, it still gets chilly in the evenings and you will use a jacket. Other things I always pack for the summer months in Mexico are:

  • Extra underwear – glamorous? No. Practical? Very much so. Here’s the deal…Mexico in summer is hot, which means you will get sweaty. Sweaty underwear is nobody’s idea of a fun vacation, so pack enough that you can change mid-day, especially if you are out sightseeing rather than beach lounging.
  • A hat – if you breezed past that recommendation above, pause here and hear me out. Sunglasses are not enough in the Mexican summer heat. You need a hat to protect your face and shoulders from the sun, so grab this cute foldable hat or do like I watched a lady in the Cabo airport do and wear multiple large floppy hats as part of your travel outfit.

Other Things To Make Your Life Easier

Laundry soap bar.

This laundry soap bar can be a life saver during your travels, as it allows you to wash that pesky stain out of your clothing right in your hotel room bathtub.

Part of feeling good is looking good, and we don’t want to have to stress about what to wear on vacation, which is why I’ve created this helpful guide. Mexico is one of my favorite destinations and a country I’ve been to more than any other. Whether the beaches of Tulum, Cancun, or Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya , or Los Cabos on the Pacific Coast, and many other coastal cities in between, through my travels I have really mastered the art of what to wear in Mexico.

This guide is your invitation to explore a curated selection of Mexico outfits for every budget, whether you’re basking in the sun’s rays on a tropical shore or discovering hidden coastal gems. Let me help you take the guesswork out of packing for Mexico (or any other tropical destination for that matter) in this detailed buying and packing guide.

Make sure to stick around until the end, where I share an easy Mexico vacation packing list with a save-able and printable image !

What to wear in mexico – mexico vacation outfit ideas for every budget.

I’ve included a category for every piece of clothing you should consider packing for your trip, with options for small, medium, and big budgets. I’ve also included shoes and accessories so that you really don’t have to stress about a single thing when it comes to packing.

The following guide includes recommendations based on best sellers and most popular items. So you can count on looking good as much as good material and fit.

what to wear in mexico

Maxi Dresses for Mexico Vacation

The maxi dress is the epitome of effortless elegance, seamlessly blending sophistication with laid-back charm. They’re easy, breezy, and can be worn as a bathing suit cover up, exploring the resort, out in town, or to dinner. A simple and minimalistic black or white maxi dress is always an elegant choice, but feel free to lean into the beach aesthetic with sunset colors or tropical patterns and prints. Maxi dresses effortlessly transition from beachside to table-side, making them a versatile and essential piece for your beach vacation wardrobe.

A Mini Sundress for Mexico Vacation

A mini sundress effortlessly captures the essence of fun, flirty, and carefree, making them an essential choice for your vacation wardrobe. The sun-soaked atmosphere calls for breezy fabrics and vibrant patterns that embrace the free spirit of summer, or classic and timeless blacks and whites for the chic minimalist. When it comes to colors and prints, anything goes. Radiate a sense of tropical bliss with vivid floral patterns, capturing the vibrant hues of exotic blooms, or channel the soothing coastal ambiance with serene pastels, reminiscent of the soft hues of seashells and ocean waves.

Versatility is key with sundresses, as they easily transition from sun-soaked days on the beach to charming seaside strolls and even sunset cocktails. Layer with a denim jacket for those cooler evenings (recommendations later in this post,) or accessorize with a colorful scarf that can double as a stylish hair accessory.

Evening Dresses

Whether you’re indulging in candlelit beachside dinners or going out for a night on the town, these evening dresses are designed to make a statement under the starry skies and humid nights.

Opt for silhouettes that celebrate femininity, such as sleek and form-fitting sheath dresses, little black dresses, or flirty wrap dresses. lean into fabrics that reflect the romantic ambiance of the evening, such as luxurious silk, satin, or form-fitting body-cons.

While the little black dress will always be a staple, when it comes to colors, venture beyond the traditional and embrace the buzzing energy of the night. Rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple evoke a sense of regalness, while metallic shades like gold, silver, and bronze lend a touch of glamour to your look. Whether you’re wondering what to pack for Cancun, Cabo, or any other Mexican City with an exciting nightlife, don’t be afraid to experiment with intricate patterns, such as florals and palm prints, or shimmering sequins that catch the light and add an alluring dimension to your outfit.

Denim Shorts – Clothes for Mexico vacation

When it comes to embracing a casual and effortlessly cool style during your beach vacation, denim shorts are a must-have wardrobe staple. These versatile and timeless pieces employ a laid-back aesthetic that perfectly complements the relaxed beach atmosphere. Whether you’re strolling along the shoreline, exploring coastal towns, or enjoying beachside activities, denim shorts are a go-to option for comfort and style.

Choose a well-fitted pair of denim shorts that flatter your shape and allow for ease of movement. Opt for classic styles like cutoffs, distressed, or high-waisted designs, depending on your personal preference and the look you want to achieve. I personally prefer lighter washes which reflect a sun-bleached vibe.

Pair your denim shorts with bodysuits or swimsuits, off-the-shoulder blouses, or lightweight linen shirts. Embrace the coastal theme by incorporating nautical-inspired stripes or vibrant tropical prints. Tie-front tops or crop tops especially make for a fun and playful silhouette. Recommendations for tops will be made later on in this post.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Linen Pants

The linen pant is sometimes a tropical vacation packing list essential that can get overlooked. These lightweight and breathable garments combine style and functionality, making them an ideal choice for both daytime excursions and evening adventures. Linen pants embody a relaxed yet refined aesthetic, allowing you to revel in the beach atmosphere in a way that can look very chic and effortless when styled right. Choose neutral tones like crisp white, soft beige, or sandy khaki for a fresh and beach-inspired look.

Pair your linen pants with a tighter fitting top to balance the silhouette, or a loose linen blouse to create a look that easily transitions from beachside relaxation to exploring coastal towns. Tuck or half tuck in a loose-fitting top or tie it in a knot to define your waist, or opt for a relaxed untucked look for a more laid-back appearance. Linen pants also complement bohemian-inspired tops or off-the-shoulder blouses, adding a touch of femininity to your outfit.

mexico trip outfit ideas

When it comes to selecting tops for your beach vacation, it’s all about finding pieces that embody both comfort and style, allowing you to go from sun-soaked days to breezy evenings. From lightweight blouses to casual tees, here are some top options to consider:

Bodysuits: Bodysuits always pull an outfit together as the tight and tucked fabric give you shape and look great whether worn with denim or linen. You can wear them on their own or paired with a button-down shirt or denim jacket draped over the shoulders for an evening look.

Crop Tops: Enjoy the carefree spirit of the beach with crop tops in soft fabrics like cotton or crochet. Pair them with high-waisted shorts or skirts for a playful and casual look.

Button-Down Shirts: Button-down shirts are a timeless and versatile choice for beach vacations whether worn buttoned or open. Opt for a lived-in look with lightweight linen or cotton fabrics in classic white or bright colors. You can also never go wrong with a fun print like floral or a Hawaiian-inspired button down.

Graphic Tees: For a laid-back and casual vibe, graphic tees are a fun option. They’re also great for travel days paired with leggings or joggers. Choose from tees with beach-inspired motifs, typography, or vintage designs to showcase your personal style.

My favorite “tequila” shirt linked below also doubles as an oversized shirt-dress (I wear them with bike shorts that peak out underneath.)

Matching Sets – Easiest Outfits for Vacation in Mexico

Matching two-piece sets offer the convenience of a complete outfit while executing a polished and put-together look that you can just throw on and go. Whether it’s a crop top and shorts, a skirt set, or a button down and shorts, there are seemingly endless options for coordinated looks. Matching sets provide a cohesive and fashionable option for your beach vacation wardrobe but don’t be afraid to mix and match with your other packed clothing items either. When in doubt, they allow for easy outfit planning while ensuring a stylish and put-together appearance. Select sets that suit your personal style and lean into the vibrant colors, patterns, and relaxed silhouettes that embody the essence of the vacation.

Jackets – More Essential Clothing for Mexico Vacation

Denim jackets are the way to go for breezy and cool nights after a sunny day at the beach. They simultaneously keep you warm yet feel lightweight enough to not make you overheat. A denim jacket is a staple that combines style, comfort, and functionality. It adds a touch of cool to your beach vacation outfits and allows for easy transition between different activities and temperatures. Don’t forget to embrace the lived-in look of denim as it naturally fades and softens over time, making each jacket unique to its owner. Opt for a light-wash denim or a light neutral color such as white, cream, or tan.

Cover-Ups For Your Beach Day Packing List

My favorite style of bathing suit cover-up is the oversized white linen or cotton button down because of its versatility. In general, a shirt like this should absolutely be part of your vacation check list because it pairs so well with virtually every other piece on your packing list for a tropical vacation. For something that makes more of a statement, a kaftan, tunic, or kimono/robe-style coverup is perfect for on the beach or around the resort.

Remember to choose cover-ups that are easy to slip on and off, quick-drying, and offer adequate coverage for your comfort. They should also provide protection against the sun while allowing airflow to keep you cool. Select cover-ups that match your personal style and complement your bathing suit, allowing you to switch from the beach to other activities that require a little more coverage. The Mexico dress code will vary by establishment, but most restaurants on and off the resorts do not allow swimwear, so a coverup is the perfect piece for a before or after beach meal.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Sandals – An Essential for Your Mexico Travel Packing List

There are a few different types of sandals to consider for your beach vacation. Flip flops or slides for the beach and pool; something with a sturdy sole and arch support that’s good for walking around town; embellished or otherwise more stylish option that can be worn to dinner or evenings out; and ideally something that can can transition between all three! My go-to styles are Birkenstocks for their comfort and durability, as well as espadrilles and other woven-type of footwear for a classic, beachy look. A sleek black sandal is also a great way to transition beachwear from day to night.

Bags – To Complement What to Wear to a Resort in Mexico

Nothing completes a vacation look better than a straw, woven, or beaded bag. Whether it’s a straw tote, a bucket bag, or a crossbody style, these types of bags offer a natural and beachy vibe. Look for intricate weaves, tassel or handle accents, or even pops of color for added flair. These lightweight bags complement every look from sundresses, maxi dresses, or casual beach ensembles.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Hats + Sunglasses – Mexico Travel Essentials

A hat and sunglasses are two things to take to Mexico that you definitely don’t want to forget. Much like the straw bag, the straw hat is a vacation wardrobe staple that is both functional, and does a lot for making an outfit look more put together. A straw hat is a classic and timeless choice for beachgoers while providing extra sun protection. A medium brim offers a more contemporary look than very wide or very narrow, and come in a variety of crown shapes.

Don’t forget to add a chic pair of sunglasses. a frame that is more square or cat-eye is never a bad choice in my opinion, while smaller sunglasses provide a more trendy and contemporary look.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Bathing Suits – One of the Most Important Things to Pack for Mexico

Bathing suit styles can be a deeply personal choice, but in my eyes the little black bathing suit is my beach vacation answer to the little black dress. Below are the best selling styles for a variety of cuts ranging from cheeky two-piece, to high-waisted and fuller coverage, or flattering one pieces with unique cuts. Pair your black bathing suit with denim shorts and a button down shirt and you’ll be good to go from the beach to town and beyond.

TIP : I recommend packing two bathing suits so you can alternate between days while one may still be wet and drying.

mexico trip outfit ideas

Jewelry – Completing Your Cute Outfits for Mexico Vacation

Want to know what not to wear in Mexico? Expensive jewelry. Leave your valuables and diamonds behind and opt for some simple pieces on the more inexpensive side.

A few minimalist pieces of jewelry can really elevate your outfits to wear to Mexico and overall vacation aesthetic. While gold jewelry flatters most tones and gives off a warm, glowy, and sun-kissed feel, silver jewelry sparkles beautifully in its own right, if silver is your preference. You only need a few simple pieces to really make your look: some hoop earrings, a layered necklace to make things easy, and a dainty ankle bracelet. Jewelry is the key to making any outfit look chic and put together, from something as simple as a white linen button down and denim shorts, to a fun maxi dress or evening mini.

More Essential Things to Bring to Mexico

There are a few more important things you shouldn’t forget to include on your Mexico travel checklist:

Reef-safe sunscreen (Love this one that also gives a glow.)

Mosquito Repellent / Bug Spray

Undergarments

Sneakers (Wear them on travel days and if you plan on doing active excursions.)

Medications, including for stomach illnesses (just in case!) See the best one here .

Phone Charger (No adapter needed for US travelers.)

External battery Power Bank

Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hair brush, makeup, skincare, perfume.)

What to Wear in Mexico

Many popular tourist destinations in Mexico are located on the beach – like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum and Cabo San Lucas. For all of these destinations you’ll want to pack light beachy items, both for daytime looks and dressier nighttime looks.

Daytime Outfits

For the daytime, I recommend casual lightweight outfits. I love either dresses, or skirts with tanks for an easy, cute day daytime look. These outfits make you look put together, but are still minimal effort and can be worn on tours, out exploring, or to a casual lunch.

Because of the high humidity in many tropical areas, I try to wear light fabrics that aren’t too tight.

Below are some of my favorite daytime outfits that I wore in Mexico!

The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

My favorite nighttime look is a dress with a block heel. Pair that with some dainty gold jewelry and you’re all set. These outfits are versatile and work for nice dinners, shows and cocktail bars.

Cute Outfits and Clothes for a Mexico Beach Vacation in 2024

' src=

Are you planning a beach trip to Mexico and looking for cute clothes for your trip? You’ve come to the right place!

As a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen , I have shopped all the latest beach styles in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya.

In this post, I’m sharing my top picks for cute outfits and clothes for a Mexico beach vacation that you can shop for your trip.

Plus, I’m sharing all my best Mexico packing tips and what to know about the weather and styles in Mexico.

Ready to find out what to wear in Mexico on the beach? Let’s get started!

Outfits for Mexico Beach Vacation

Below is an overview of the most popular style and fashion you will find in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and Tulum.

⚠️ Since I live in Playa del Carmen, this guide is more geared towards Mexico vacation outfits and clothes for Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya . However, if you’re planning to visit tourist destinations on the west coast of Mexico such as Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, or Los Cabos, the style is pretty much the same!

Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Riviera Maya Outfits

As primarily tourist destinations, Playa del Carmen and Cancun are much less conservative than other big cities in Mexico.

It’s not uncommon to see a lot of people wearing swimwear and minimal clothing walking down the street.

After all, you’ll probably be in your bathing suit for most of the time!

The general vibe is very beachy, laidback, and carefree. Styles can range from super casual to more formal resort wear for a fancy dinner or night out.

🛍 You can scroll through and shop the images in this post to give you some great Mexico vacation outfit ideas.

Here are some examples of Playa del Carmen outfits to give you an idea of style in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and the Riviera Maya region:

Tulum Outfits

In Tulum, the style tends to be much more bohemian and noticeably different than the style in Playa del Carmen.

Outfits for Tulum typically include Fedora hats, flowy skirts and wraps, and crochet tops in neutral, earthy tones.

Tulum style is very boho-chic, which fits into Tulum’s overall design aesthetic and attracts influencers and fashion bloggers from around the world.

Here are some examples of Tulum outfits to give you an idea of the style in Tulum:

Cute Clothes for Mexico Beach Vacation

Below is a roundup of some of my favorite finds for a Mexico beach trip including dresses and rompers, tops, shorts, skirts, coverups, shoes, and accessories.

These are some cute Mexico outfits you can expect to see in Mexico at the beach.

👙 For swimsuits and rash guards, check out my complete guide to Mexico swimwear here:  The Best Swimsuits for Mexico

Dresses and Rompers

These dresses to wear in Mexico are colorful, comfortable, and flirty!

Rompers are probably one of my favorite fashion items because you can dress them up but they are still comfortable and usually have pockets as an added bonus.

Here are some of my favorite vacation dresses for Mexico:

Tops and Blouses

You’ll want to wear tanks, short sleeve, or sleeveless tops since the weather will be hot and humid–you will probably be uncomfortable in long sleeves!

You’ll also see a lot of crop tops paired with high-waisted skirts shorts.

Here are some of my favorite tops and blouses for Mexico:

Comfortable shorts are an essential item to pack for Mexico . I love the high-waisted drawstring shorts that are super comfortable and non-restrictive.

If you’re comfortable in shorts and skirts, you can probably get away without bringing any long pants or jeans as it’s too hot for most of the year.

Here are some of my favorite shorts for Mexico:

Flowy ankle length maxi skirts are a good option that you can dress up or that can also double as a beach coverup to wear with your bikini top.

And one of the best things is that flowy skirts are light and airy to keep you cool!

Here are some of my favorite long and short skirts for Mexico:

You’re probably going to be in your swimsuit about 90% of the time so a beach coverup is pretty essential.

I usually try to choose a neutral color like black or white that will go with all my swimsuits.

Travelista Tip:  Consider buying a  kimono style coverup  that can double as a shawl in the evenings.

Here are some of my favorite swimsuit coverups for Mexico:

Sandals & Shoes

In the shoe department, you’ll definitely want to bring flip flops and a pair of sandals, as well as comfortable walking shoes .

You’ll also want to pick up a pair of water shoes if you’re planning any adventurous tours or activities.

If you’re staying in downtown Playa del Carmen, I wouldn’t really recommend wearing heels as the streets are pretty uneven.

If you really want to wear heels, I would recommend wedges or platform sandals.

I usually opt for these platform sandals for a night out for the added height of wearing heels but way more comfortable.

However, if you’re staying at one of the all inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya , you can probably get away with wearing heels to dress up for a nicer dinner or night out at the resort.

Here are some of my favorite shoes and sandals for Mexico:

Accessories

Mexico beach accessories are pretty much all about the brightly colored tassels and pom-poms!

Bring a sun hat as well as some colorful jewelry, bags, and accessories to complement your cute Mexico outfits.

In addition, you’ll definitely want to bring a crossbody purse or belt bag for added safety and security when you’re out and about.

I personally have this belt bag and it’s one of my favorite travel accessories for daytime activities.

Here are some of my favorite accessories for Mexico:

What’s the Beach Style Like in Mexico?

Beach style in Mexico is all about bright colors, tropical patterns, and bold prints.

Think colorful maxi dresses, flowy skirts, crop tops, and strapless or off-the-shoulder blouses.

You’ll also see styles inspired by traditional Mexican clothing like colorful embroidery, hand-woven fabrics, and tassels and pom-poms.

Mexican women tend to dress a little more formally, but most tourists usually wear more casual beach and resort wear with sandals and flip flops during the day.

For a night out, dresses, skirts, and rompers are the normal dress code.

The great thing about Mexico beach style is that you can definitely get away with different colors and bold patterns.

Don’t be afraid to step out in these beach towns in something that is a little brighter or bolder from your normal style!

What’s the Weather Like in Mexico at the Beach?

Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya has warm weather and a tropical climate all year round.

There are occasional cold fronts, but the temperatures never really drop below 60 ° F so you can feel comfortable wearing shorts and beachwear any time of year.

Below is a chart of average monthly temperatures to give you an idea of how warm it will be during the month that you’re visiting.

Playa del Carmen Average Monthly Temperatures

Playa del Carmen Average Monthly Temperatures

The Riviera Maya dry season runs from December-April, when the weather is still very warm but there is less humidity.

On the contrary, the rainy season runs from May-October, when thunderstorms and showers are more common but there will still be plenty of sun.

During the winter months ( December – January ), it can sometimes get cooler at night, so it’s a good idea to bring a sweater or light jacket if you’re visiting during this time.

🌊 The sea temperature is generally warm enough to swim in and visit the Riviera Maya beaches all year round.

Be prepared for the humidity, which is most intense during the summer months but is still present all year round.

Hot and humid weather means you’ll want to pack plenty of bug spray or mosquito repellent bracelets !

What Kind of Clothes Should You Pack for a Mexico Beach Trip?

Since the weather is hot and humid for most of the year, the best clothes to wear in Mexico are light breathable clothing as you’ll likely be breaking a sweat.

Light breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are best to absorb sweat and keep you cool.

What to pack for Mexico will depend on the length of your trip and the types of tours and activities you plan to do.

At a minimum, you’ll want to pack these vacation clothes for Mexico:

  • Swimsuit coverup
  • Tank tops and blouses
  • Dressier attire like dresses, skirts, or rompers
  • Sandals and flip flops
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Crossbody purse or belt bag

If you’re planning to visit any archaeological sites on the Yucatan peninsula like the Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins or the Tulum Mayan Ruins , you’ll want to bring comfortable shoes, activewear, and pair of water shoes .

Mexico Packing Tips

I have packed my bag for Mexico so many times that I pretty much have it down to a science!

The great thing about packing for the beach is that you can pack lighter and your items won’t take up as much space in your suitcase.

Here are some of my best Mexico packing tips:

  • Use packing cubes: I bought these packing cubes and they have been an absolute game changer for me! Honestly, I had no idea how much space they really save and they keep your suitcase so tidy, organized, and easy to zip. Plus, they allow you to separate your undergarments, swimsuits, tops, and bottoms into different packing cubes for ease of access. Now I’m a believer and packing cubes are pretty much my number one packing tip!
  • Try to mix and match: Try to choose tops and bottoms that can be easily mixed and matched to create different outfits to wear in Mexico. This will save space in your suitcase and expand your outfit options.
  • Pack some neutral accessories: Try to pack a few neutral accessories like tan, white, or blush colored shoes, clutches, and jewelry that can be paired with many of your Mexico vacation clothes.
  • Skip the heels: As I mentioned, it can be difficult to wear heels for a night out unless you’re staying at the resort or planning to take a taxi everywhere. It’s not impossible, but you’ll be way more comfortable in sandals, platforms, or wedges.
  • Bring a beach bag as your personal item: A beach bag is a cute and practical accessory to bring to store your beach towel, sunscreen, and other beach bag essentials. However, they can be bulky so I would recommend bringing it as your personal item on the plane to save space in your suitcase.
  • Bring water shoes : If you’re planning to go on any tours or participate in more adventurous activities during your trip, make sure to add water shoes to your Mexico packing list . You’ll definitely want to have them for activities like visiting a cenote, ziplining, or going to an adventure park.

Conclusion: Clothes for Mexico Beach Vacation

I hope this cute outfits for Mexico vacation guide was helpful in preparing for your Mexico beach trip!

Mexico beach destinations are fun, flirty, and colorful, which makes it so much fun to shop for. Just be sure to bring lightweight options and not too many warm clothes.

Now that you know what to wear in Mexico on the beach, you can focus on planning fun tours and activities!

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Table Of Contents

Right below the US – in southern North America – lies Mexico. Known for its cultural festivals, sunshine, and delicious food, Mexico is becoming a more popular travel destination each day.

There are so many popular tourist destinations, on both the east and west coasts, not forgetting the huge capital that is Mexico City.

Mexico Clothing Style

When wondering what to pack for Mexico, keep in mind that the country’s clothing style ranges from traditional dresses to stylish jeans , tops , and sundresses . The overall style is casual though some professions require nicer dresses or uniforms. Heat and proximity to the beach influence styles in coastal areas, where they prefer looser, lightweight fabrics and silhouettes.

The climate in Mexico makes fashion somewhat tepid throughout the year, with more of a focus on functional items (things like swim cover ups rarely change too much from season to season!). But, you’ll find yourself needing bright colors, loose fabrics, and as many swimsuits as you can bring.

MERSEA Classic Wrap

However, if you take a cruise or boat around the coast, make sure you prepare with a light jacket or throw – a denim jacket is a staple that can be teamed with most outfits if you’re looking to pack light. But, regardless of how much you’re covering up, the tropical, south-of-the-border vibe is classic year-round.

Lessen the bulk in your suitcase by adding a light, stylish  travel wrap to moderate and hot destinations.

You may feel the need to bare some skin at the resorts but dress a bit more conservatively like the Quince Midi Linen Dress above when visiting villages and towns.

Parts of Mexico dress more conservatively but around the popular travel destinations on the western coast most summer clothing is acceptable and worn often. However, be sure to bring pieces that cover your shoulders and longer trousers , skirts , or linen pants like the one above if you plan to visit any religious sites such as cathedrals.

Mexico City is a bustling capital with millions of residents and tourists. Here you’ll find a city chic vibe, but with breathable fabrics and thin layers to help control your temperature.

Taos Trulie Sandals

The primary choice for footwear on the west coast of Mexico is sandals . Since a large amount of time is spent exploring beaches and beach towns, sandals are a must to stay cooled off and comfortable during your trip. Bring a comfortable pair for walking , as well as a slip-on style such as flip flops or slides to take on and off easily for the beach.

Be sure to also take along a pair of comfortable sneakers for any hiking or other more active excursions. This type of shoe is also a good option for staying comfortable while exploring parts of cities and towns that aren’t as close to the beach.

What to Wear in Mexico in Spring and Summer

The weather in the Baja California Sur region is traditionally quite warm during the spring. Temperature averages are in the ’80s during the days in this season.

If visiting at the beginning of spring, March averages a few degrees cooler than April and May. Shorts , skirts , short-sleeve tops, and dresses are all commonly worn by visitors and locals alike.

Nights can become a bit cooler so a light sweater or jacket is recommended to stay comfortable once the sun goes down. Nighttime temperatures average in the 60’s.

what-to-wear-in-mexico

Quince 100% European Linen Pants | Sizes XS-XL

Summer time is usually hot and humid, so skimpy clothing is all that will be needed around coastal locations. If you are headed inland or to a town or city, consider options that are breezy, but more stylish, such as wide legged pants or linen pants and tank tops in cool fabrics such as cotton or linen.

The sun can be intense in the spring so it’s important to pack wide-brimmed hat to help keep the sun off your face. Sunglasses are also a staple to protect your eyes from the scorching Mexican sun.

Because of the tropical locale, you’re going to want a lot of bright colors or even bright white to stand out. This can include bright dresses , tops, and bathing suits .

Mexican beachwear is pretty standard, and you don’t need to dress fancy unless you’re headed to a high-end beach club. Don’t forget sunblock (reef safe if you’re close to the sea), a beach bag , and a towel for the inevitable beach day.

What to Wear in Mexico in Fall and Winter

Mexico is a vast country ranging in latitude. However its proximity to the equator makes it generally warm throughout the winter season.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for winter travel:

Cabo San Lucas, for example, ranges from the high 50s to mid 80s during this time of year while Ensenada (close to the California border) ranges from the high 50s to mid 70s.

And even the east coast only slightly differs from the west. Tulum reaches the mid 70s to 80s while Baja California experiences the same temperature, with just a bit of downpour.

The east coast does have a wetter time in the fall, as this is the Caribbean hurricane season, so be prepared for some tropical showers on some days, by packing an umbrella .

The northern and central parts of the country can feel cooler. In winter in Mexico City, the daytime can feel comfortable, but early mornings and evenings are cold enough for you to pack a coat.

Wandering around historical sites, like the Palacio de Belles Artes of Mexico City or Chacchoben of Costa Maya, requires a little bit more of a photogenic outfit.

You’ll still want to dress casually so as to not call too much touristy attention to yourself. A mid-length sundress or cute shirt and jeans combo would be the perfect outfit.

One of the most important essentials you can pack when visiting Mexico is sunscreen . The sun can be harsh year-round so it’s important to come prepared to protect your skin.

Lastly, despite the fact that Mexico can get a tad chilly at night, you’re still going to end up in the water. Make sure you bring all of the beach items as usual, with just a few more layers. A couple of swimsuits , a coverup , and a jacket would be perfect.

Mexico Travel Tips

The Mexican people are extremely welcoming and helpful. Though it definitely helps to study a bit of Spanish before your arrival, tourist destinations on the coasts often have many friendly English-speaking locals.

If you plan to spend more time in more off-the-grid areas then learning a few Spanish basics will go a long way.

Mexico Accommodations

Mexico has just about every type of accommodation you could ever desire. All-inclusive resorts, family hotels, private villas, volunteer housing, Airbnb  casas, and hostels throughout the country.

As Mexico is becoming a more popular option for tourists, eco-villas, and eco-resorts are steadily growing.

Mexico Transportation

Most of your transportation throughout Mexico will be via automobile. Whether you’re driving yourself or taking the vast network of buses, driving is the country’s main mode of transport.

Buses can take a while to get from place to place as the country is so expensive. However, they are cheap and generally quite comfortable and air-conditioned.

Mexico also has reliable airline connections, with airports in good proximity to most of the tourist destinations. Flight times are reasonable from the US, so a weekend getaway is a good option.

Mexico Shopping

If you arrive in Mexico and realize you haven’t quite packed everything you need, you are in luck. Many of the popular travel destinations in Sinaloa and Baja California on the west coast, and Cancun and Playa del Carmen on the east coast, also have many stores where you can pick up both imported and locally made clothing and accessories.

Mexico is also a prime destination for finding deals on silver jewelry and stones such as turquoise and opal.

In smaller shops and stalls in flea markets, it is common to barter to get a lower price as vendors often post their asking price higher than they are willing to sell each item for. Shoe stores, commonly known in Mexico as Zapaterias, are often found in popular tourist destinations.

What to Do in Mexico

One of Mexico’s greatest attractions (and one of the new world wonders) is the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza .

Lots of the tourist parks along the coasts have theme parks and adventure parks close by for those who desire a little more action on a trip. Ziplining and ATV riding are available in a lot of areas.

what-to-wear-in-mexico

Cressi Scuba Diving Snorkel Set

Not to mention the watersports! If you’re staying close to the coast then you’ll find snorkeling and scuba diving are easily accessible, with options for beginners and seasoned divers.

You may also want to try paddleboarding, fishing or just enjoying the view from a private chartered catamaran cruise.

If you’re looking for some real Mexican culture, enjoy one of the country’s many festivals.

Día de Los Muertos takes place in the middle of fall and has huge celebrations and events throughout the entire country. While winter Mexican festivals include Día de los Inocentes, La Posada, and, of course, New Year’s Eve!

Exploring Mexico's Marvels

Tulum is a mesmerizing blend of ancient history and tropical paradise. From the 13th to the 15th centuries, it was a bustling Mayan city that served as a crucial port for the nearby metropolis of CobĂĄ. Today, it remains a treasure trove of history and beauty. The crown jewel of Tulum is El Castillo, a striking structure perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

Tulum has transformed into a haven for beach lovers and eco-conscious travelers. Its powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters are simply irresistible. Tulum is also renowned for its commitment to sustainability, with eco-friendly resorts that offer a blend of luxury and environmental stewardship.

One of the coolest aspects of Tulum is its proximity to mesmerizing cenotes – natural freshwater sinkholes that the ancient Maya considered sacred. These cenotes are perfect for a refreshing swim or an adventurous dive, offering a unique glimpse into the subterranean wonders of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Whether you’re exploring the ancient ruins, relaxing on the idyllic beaches, or diving into the mystical cenotes, Tulum is a place where history and modern-day paradise come together in the most delightful way.

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is an awe-inspiring ancient city that continues to captivate visitors with its grandeur and mystery. Often referred to as the "City of the Gods," Teotihuacan flourished between the 1st and 7th centuries AD and was one of the largest cities in the world during its peak. Walking through Teotihuacan is like stepping back in time, with its massive pyramids, intricate murals, and complex urban layout.

The centerpiece of Teotihuacan is the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest pyramids in the world. Climbing its 248 steps rewards you with breathtaking views of the entire archaeological site and the surrounding Valley of Mexico.

Despite its ancient origins, Teotihuacan remains shrouded in mystery. Historians and archaeologists are still unraveling the secrets of its builders and the reasons behind the city's sudden decline. This aura of mystery adds to the allure of exploring Teotihuacan, where every step feels like a journey into the unknown.

What To Wear to the Beach in Cancun

Turquoise seas, white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs make up the beauty that is Cancun. As a matter of fact, this beach town is one of Mexico’s most popular destinations.

With tourists from all over the world, you’ll want to make sure your outfits are fabulous. Especially your beachwear. Therefore, we’ve got the list of  what you’ll want to wear while taking a dip in the ocean or sunning on the sand:

  • Swimsuits: Choose a bikini or a one-piece, it’s up to you! As long as you feel confident and comfortable, you’ll shine on this Caribbean beach.
  • Flip flops & Sandals: While you’ll definitely be kicking off your shoes as soon as you hit the water, the powdery white sand will be hot! Therefore, opt for a pair of rubber flip flops or leather sandals to keep your feet from burning from the hotel to the shore.
  • Coverups: A cotton dress, oversized button-up, gauzy short-set or linen coverup is the perfect thing to throw over your bathing suit. For the most part, these quick dry fabrics will have you looking fashionable without being too hot in the Mexico humidity.

  • Accessories: No beach outfit is complete without a pair of sunnies and a fabulous hat! Therefore, shade your eyes and face from the sun with big frames and wide brims. Looking to go the extra mile? Throw on tarnish-free jewelry for an elevated look.

accessories:

  • Beach Tote: Lastly, but certainly not least, you’ll want a tote bag to carry all of you beach essentials. Particularly, you’ll want a straw or whicker bag to house things like sunscreen, sunglasses, headphones, your favorite book, and snacks. Also, neutral colors will go with all your bathing suits and look chic with any coverup you choose!

What To Wear To Cancun Clubs

While you’ll be spending most of your time on the beach during the day, you’ll want to hit at least one of Cancun’s famous clubs at night.

Ordinarily, when it comes to club attire, there is no specific Cancun nightlife dress code. Still you’ll want to avoid wearing beach attire (unless it’s a pool party), and clothes that are too casual. By all means, dress up a little and have fun. You’re on vacation, after all!

Here’s what you’ll want to wear to dance the night away at a Cancun Club:

  • Party Dresses: Whether you choose a tighter or looser fitting dress, make sure it is comfortable and breezy. In short, you can still feel the Mexico humidity at night, and you won’t want to be uncomfortable while you are dancing up a storm! Therefore, opt for cotton or linen dresses over polyester materials. You’ll thank us later.

party dresses:

  • Wedges & Block Heels: Dress up your club outfit with a comfortable pair of wedges or block heels. Usually stilettos are tricky to navigate in crowds or on slippery floors. Simply go for something with sturdy heel and a strap around the ankle is ideal for walking and dancing.
  • Jewelry: Gold or silver, your choice! Simply go with something more dainty and subtle rather than big and over-the-top.

What do you wear to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico?

If you’re staying in Cancun, you are likely staying in Hotel Zone. In this case, most of these resorts don’t have any type of strict dress code. Therefore, swimsuits, flip flops and coverups will suffice for most of your trip. However, you’ll also want a few dressier outfits if you are dining at your hotel.

Here’s what you’ll want to wear on your all-inclusive vacation:

  • Lightweight dresses
  • Midi or maxi skirts
  • Swimsuits and cover-ups
  • Tank tops (neutral colors are great for versatility)
  • Lightweight shorts (linen and cotton)
  • Lightweight pants (linen and cotton)
  • Wedge or block-heeled sandals
  • Leather sandals or flip flops
  • Subtle, tarnish-free jewelry
  • Workout clothing and running shoes (see below)

Additionally, your resort will also likely have various activities for you and your travel companions to enjoy. So, t ake a look at your itinerary and plan accordingly for activities such as swimming, workout classes and off-site excursions.

What do you wear to a wedding in Cancun?

Because Cancun is so beautiful, many couples choose it as a wedding destination. Therefore, when choosing the perfect outfit as a wedding guest think “breezy and elevated” . Simply put, long, airy dresses or shorter cotton dresses are perfect for beach-side nuptials.

Here’s what you’ll want to pack as a destination wedding guest:

  • Midi, Maxi, or Mini Dress: Soft colors look great in beach photos. Therefore, opt for a cotton or linen dress for your loved one’s “I Do’s.” Also, if you want to go with a light color, instead of anything bright white (you don’t want to compete with the bride…) , go with ivory or cream.

wedding guest dresses:

  • Sandals:  Strappy wedge or flat sandals are great for beach weddings. Simply put, in the event that the ceremony takes place on the sand, you won’t lose a shoe!
  • Accessories:  Try s ubtle, tarnish-free jewelry to add a little something extra to your effortlessly chic wedding guest outfit. Especially if it’s a fancier wedding at a high-end resort.

What To Wear Exploring Cancun

Looking to get off the beach for a day? Cancun is a great destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and history buffs alike. Snorkeling, scuba diving, golfing, sight-seeing and museums are all great activities for those who don’t like to sit still for long.

Here’s what you’ll want to bring for any excursion you plan:

  • Rash guard for snorkeling
  • Sneakers for golfing or hiking
  • Comfortable walking shoes for sight-seeing
  • Crossbody bag or bum bag to carry things such as snacks and sunscreen
  • Comfortable shorts and tank tops
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun Hat

Additionally, different excursions will require you to pack different things. For this reason, make sure to double check your itinerary to ensure you have all that you need.

image of a woman in a tank top and white linen pants and brown sandals

Should I take pants to Cancun?

You might be wondering, do I need pants in Cancun, Mexico? While you’ll spend most of your trip in a bathing suit, it’s always a good idea to include at least one pair of lightweight pants on your Cancun packing list.

Therefore, go with a cropped or long pair of neutral linen pants that can be dressed up or down. For instance, you can easily throw them over bikini bottoms and wear them as a cover-up with a bikini top. Simply put, you’ll look chic and polished as you walk down to the beach.

On the other hand, for a more elevated dinner look you can pair them with a neutral tank top and wedges. This is an effortlessly glam look for drinks at the bar or dinner Al Fresco. Not to mention, it can get cooler in the evenings so pants add that extra layer.

What To Pack For Cancun

Now that you know what kind of outfits will be in your suitcase, you can use this list as the ultimate guide while packing. Also, make sure to purchase a set of packing cubes beforehand as they’ll keep all your belongings organized while traveling.

Moreover, the list may need adjustments depending on your itinerary. Therefore, add items where necessary and check your list twice to make sure you don’t forget anything important.

If you are headed to Cancun and need some ideas for cute Cancun outfits to wear on your next Mexico Vacation- you have come to the right place!

Cancun is one of the top tourist destinations, I’ve been vacationing in Cancun for years staying at both all-inclusive resorts and non-all-inclusive resorts. Plus I’ve explored restaurants and activities off property.

In fact, I just got back from my Cacnun trip this January and put together this list of cute Cancun Outfits, so I know exactly what kind of clothing you’ll want to bring on your Cancun Mexico trip.

So whether you are visiting Cancun for a romantic getaway, a girl’s trip, or spring break, you’ll find great Mexico vacation outfit inspiration .

Plus I’ll go over common questions like what to wear on a resort in Mexico, dress codes, and more. Let’s get into the outfits.

Cancun Outfits

Amazon Cancun Outfit Favorites: Check out my curated Amazon Cancun Packing List of my favorite Cancun dresses, swimsuits, and beach accessories to wear on your getaway.

Cancun Airport Outfit

Cancun Airport Outfit

First, let’s talk about the Cancun Airport outfit.

Now the reason you should put some thought into this is because when you land you’ll arrive in a warmer humid climate waiting around awhile for customs, baggage claim, excursions salespeople, car transfers, and hotel check-in (sometimes with a cocktail and a tour)

And from my first-hand experience, doing all those activities in winter clothing is dreadful.

The sweat and discomfort do not leave. By the time you reach your hotel room, the only thing you’ll want to do is shower rather than enjoy the resort.

Instead, wear something with looser lighter fabric . I wore this 2-piece set from Amazon and I felt comfortable on the flight and arriving in the humid weather in Cancun.

So much better than heavy sweaters you’d want to rip off! (Can you tell I don’t love to overheat?)

You can also change into something after you land in Cancun at the airport if you’d prefer wearing warmer clothing on the plane. But trust me, you’ll want to change into something more breathable!

Daytime Cancun Outfits

What to wear during the day in Cancun is mostly swimsuits, coverups, beachwear, and comfortable clothing to wear around the resort. Here are some daytime Cancun Outfit ideas:

What to Wear to the Pool & Beach

Cancun outfit ideas

Like I mentioned, when on vacation in Cancun you will be living in a swimsuit cover-up and bathing suit when heading to the pool or beach.

I recommend packing a few beach coverups that ideally match all of your swimsuits. I love this white 100% linen coverup from Amazon . It looks and feels luxurious and it matched all my swimsuits.

For swimsuits , pack a few of your favorites. They hardly take up room in your suitcase, so this is where I generally overpack. If you want to do watersports like kayaking or snorkeling, I’d recommend a one-piece you can move around in.

What to wear Around the Resort

cancun mexico outfits

While you’ll be living in swimsuit coverups and swimsuits, don’t forget to pack casual clothing you can wear around the resort. For example, a quick run to the buffet, a morning walk, or grabbing a coffee doesn’t require a swimsuit.

I like to bring casual tank tops, lightweight shorts (which can double as a workout outfit if you plan on hitting the gym) t-shirts, and loose-fit clothing.

These items are easy to throw on and are moisture-wicking for any humid day.

You can also wear a lightweight sundress around the resort for something more dressed up, yet comfortable.

What to wear Cancun Excursion

Cancun Excursion Outfit

When in Cancun, don’t forget about some amazing adventure excursion opportunities like a day trip to Chichen Iza , visiting Centoes , or a day trip to Ek Balam another famous Mayan Archaeological site.

For a day trip outside of the hotel zone wear comfortable shoes like a white sneaker , a bathing swimsuit for swimming in the cenotes, a dry bag for a change of clothes if swimming, and comfortable loose clothing.

Day trips to archeological sites are full-day tours, around 11-12 hours so pack for comfort with shoes you can walk in.

More Cancun Day Trips:

Evening Cancun Outfits

Evenings in Cancun mean you can have fun dressing up, you are on vacation after all. During the evening I like to wear maxi dresses, or darker sundresses, or linen pants with a nice top is always chic. Just think about wearing some resort casual wear.

Here are some evening Cancun Mexico outfit ideas on what to wear at night in Cancun.

What to wear to Dinner in Cancun

Cancun Outfits Evening

Now depending on the resort you are staying at, some may implement an evening dress code, but generally for dinner a maxi dress, sundress, or a chic pant outfit is acceptable.

Because it’s vacation, I love wearing bright pops of color, like this orange maxi dress from Amazon .

Pair your outfit with an evening clutch, sandals, or even a heel if you are feeling extra special.

I found the dress code not to be as strict, so as long as you don’t show up in a swimsuit, you’ll be okay for dinner.

What to Wear in Cancun Nightlife

What you wear going out in Cancun will depend on what kind of place you are visiting. Some nightclubs in Cancun have a dress code, whereas other bars are a bit more casual where you can wear shorts and sandals.

If you want to visit nightclubs, I’d dress comfortably yet chic. A simple black dress, flat sandals, and a crossbody bag is an option.  But if you want to hit up bars along the hotel zone, you can wear something more casual.

Vacation Sunhat

Frequently Asked Questions: Cancun Outfits

How should i dress for cancun mexico.

Cancun Mexico is a vacation resort destination with the majority of visitors on vacation ready for relaxation and a fun good time.

Dress in resort casual wear with loose comfortable clothing, sundresses, beach coverups, and swimsuits, and don’t forget your sun accessories.

Do You Need a Sweater at Night in Cancun?

If you are always cold, to be on the safe side, yes, I would pack a sweater for Cancun at night.

This is especially true if you are traveling during the winter. Nights could get chilly, and a sweater draped over your shoulders, or worn on is a stylish warm option.

However, during my time in Cancun in January, I did not need my sweater as the nights were a comfortable 70 degrees.

What is the Dress Code at Cancun Resorts?

Depending on the resort you are staying at, dress codes are pretty lax during the day, so wear your favorite beachtime daytime outfit. However, when walking down hallways, lobbies, and public areas avoid walking in just swimwear.

At night there is more of a dress code enforced. Men should wear long pants and a collared shirt, while ladies can wear something a bit dressed up.

Don’t roll straight from the pool to dinner either, no swimsuits or coverups are allowed at sit-down restaurants.

For example from the resort I just stayed at in Cancun, the Hyatt Ziva here was the dress code for the fanciest restaurant on site:

Cancun Dress Code

Can I Wear Shorts in Cancun?

Yes, you can wear shorts in Cancun, but for dinner, men should opt for long pants and a collared shirt. Some resorts enforce this more than others, but to be on the safe side, leave the shorts for daytime.

What to Wear to a Cancun Destination Wedding?

If you are headed to a Cancun destination wedding, you can opt for a beautiful flowy maxi dress in a summery beachy color or colorful pattern.

Depending on where the ceremony takes place, heels in the sand could be a problem. Opt for dressy flats or put your heels on after the ceremony!

What Not to pack for Cancun?

With so many things you should pack with you, some items you should leave at home include food items, particularly fruits vegetables, etc.

Also, leave any valuables like designer items or expensive jewelry if you are worried about things being stolen. I’ve never had any issues with bringing valuables while in Mexico, but if you’d rather not think about it, for ease of mind keep those items at home.

What’s the Weather Like in Cancun Mexico?

Before packing for planning outfits for any trip, always look at the weather. This will help you plan appropriately for any unexpected cool nights, rain, etc.

In general Cancun temperatures are warm ranging from 70-100 degrees Fahrenheit even in the coolest month in January.

The driest and sunniest time to visit Cancun Mexico is from December through April. While May to September is the wet season. However, the rain storms usually only last a few moments, and the sunshine quickly returns.

Puerto Vallarta Outfits Inspo: What to Wear in PV in 2024

' src=

Wondering what to wear in Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

You’ve come to the right place because I’ve been living in Mexico since 2018, and I’ve also done countless trips to Puerto Vallarta in the last few years.

When packing your Puerto Vallarta outfits, keep these two things in mind: 1) Puerto Vallarta is HOT all year, and 2) it’s not just beaches; there are a variety of things to do in Puerto Vallarta.

If you need stylish outfit ideas for Puerto Vallarta so you can both ride ATVs in the jungle and lounge at your resort, and enjoy both daytime and nighttime activities — I’m here to help!

Whether you’re going to Puerto Vallarta for a romantic getaway, girl’s trip, or spring break, this article has all the Puerto Vallarta outfits inspo you need to plan the perfect Mexico vacation wardrobe.

Besides the clothes, I’ll answer common questions about what to wear at a resort in Mexico, typical Puerto Vallarta dress codes, and much more — so let’s dive in!

Puerto Vallarta Airport Outfit Ideas

SAMPEEL Two Piece Set for Women Casual Lounge Sets Summer Outfits Matching Sets Women Clothing Business Casual Vacation Travel Outfits Wide Leg Crop Pants Mock Neck Tops Set Black 2024 M

Believe it or not, your airport outfit counts in Puerto Vallarta — so let’s start with what to wear when arriving at Puerto Vallarta Airport (and it’s definitely NOT a sweat suit).

No matter when you visit, it’s going to be hot in Puerto Vallarta (or really hot 🥵), so plan your first outfit carefully because you’ll be arriving to a humid climate.

From my experience living in Mexico since 2018 and using the Puerto Vallarta Airport a few times, it doesn’t have AC in all areas — but you’ll still have to deplane, go through customs, collect your luggage, arrange your airport transfer , etc.

Trust me when I tell you that doing all these things in a sweat suit or winter clothes will be miserable because the Puerto Vallarta heat can be unbearable.

Instead, opt for something made of a lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton or linen so you stay as cool as possible.

I recommend this comfortable two-piece set from Amazon for your flight so that you’ll feel cool and comfy upon arrival to the humid Puerto Vallarta weather.

Now, if you prefer wearing warmer clothes on the plane, make sure you have an outfit in your carry on luggage so you can change into something light after landing.

Daytime Puerto Vallarta Outfit Ideas

As one of the most popular beach towns in Mexico , I know you’re going to want to hit those beaches ASAP!

What to wear during the day in Puerto Vallarta consists of mostly swimsuits, sun hats , cover-ups, and sunglasses — but here are some daytime Puerto Vallarta outfit ideas to help you with a visual on beachwear:

What to Wear to the Beach in Puerto Vallarta

Eomenie Women's One Piece Swimsuits Tummy Control Cutout High Waisted Bathing Suit Wrap Tie Back 1 Piece Swimsuit Black Striped

Packing for Puerto Vallarta is usually easier than many think because during your Puerto Vallarta vacation, swimsuits and cover-ups are about 60% of what you’ll need.

To mix it up, bring a few versatile beach cover-ups that pair well with all your swimsuits, or a neutral colored cover-up that goes with everything.

I love this boho cover-up from Amazon that comes in a bunch of colors. If you get it black, white or beige, it will complement all your swimsuits perfectly.

Since bathing suits for Puerto Vallarta don’t take up much room, bring a selection of your favorites (or get these space space packing cubes to conserve luggage space).

If you’re planning for water activities like kayaking, snorkeling and jet skiing, bring a one-piece swimsuit so you can move around freely without it falling off.

For those who prefer not to use sunscreen, opt for these long-sleeve bathing suits that have built-in protection to shield you from the sun’s rays.

Beyond what to wear, you’ll want a cute beach bag like this one to carry all your stuff, and this Sand-Free Turkish Towel so you can lay around without getting all sandy.

What to Wear to the Pool at Your Resort

Jeasona Women’s Bathing Suit Cover Up for Beach Pool Swimwear Crochet Dress (Blue, L)

You’ll get a general idea of bathing suits for Puerto Vallarta from the list above, but don’t forget this cute sun hat , your sunglasses, and sandals you can easily slide on and off.

Also, a beach bag is great to carry all your stuff, but this waterproof fanny pack is both stylish and practical.

With it, you can store your phone, money, credit card, ID, room key, lipgloss and a few other things, and not worry about anything getting wet.

What to Wear at Puerto Vallarta Resorts

ZESICA Women's 2024 Summer Boho Spaghetti Strap Square Neck Solid Color Ruffle A Line Beach Long Maxi Dress,Black,Small

Resort casual is the name of the game at the vast majority of hotels in Puerto Vallarta, so think breathable and comfortable clothing to wear around the resort.

During the day, sundresses for women and shorts and a T-shirt for men will work. Do note that some resorts require shirts with sleeves while eating at indoor restaurants.

Both women and men can usually get away with any type of sandals anywhere on-resort, but note that most places require you to use footwear at all times when indoors at common areas.

Outfit Ideas for Puerto Vallarta Excursions

ANRABESS Women's Summer Casual Sleeveless Romper Loose Spaghetti Strap Shorts Overalls Jumpsuit with Pockets 2024 Clothes Medium

Truth be told, I didn’t know this on my first visit — but Puerto Vallarta is MUCH more than just beaches!

While traveling to Puerto Vallarta, take advantage of the fantastic adventure excursions like riding ATVs , a day trip to Yelapa , and going snorkeling near Los Arcos .

For these excursions, it’s important to dress appropriately so let’s go over this more in depth below.

What to Wear for Hikes and Land-Based Activities

There are numerous things to do on land, like going horseback riding in the mountains, going on zip lines through the jungle, and riding an ATV across Jorullo Bridge .

For these places, make sure to pack comfortable shoes like these Hokas , known as some of most comfortable travel sneakers, or your hiking boots.

Shorts and a tank top will work for your clothing, or any athleisure outfit you feel comfortable in.

Also, make sure you have plenty of sunscreen , a good backpack, and a reusable water bottle. I love this Water-To-Go bottle because it has a built-in water filter.

What to Wear for Boating in Puerto Vallarta

There are A LOT of ways to enjoy Puerto Vallarta by water — like fishing tours , boating tours , going jet skiing , snorkeling tours , visiting the Marietas Islands , and whale watching in winter.

For these, you’ll want to bring a bathing suit and cover-up, as well as a few things you might not be thinking of, like these five Puerto Vallarta packing list essentials:

🩱 Long Sleeve Bathing Suit (AKA Rash Guard)

Lotion, creams and sunscreen of any type (even eco-sunscreen) have at least some level of environmental impact.

To circumvent this, women can get one of these long sleeve swim suits , and men can opt for one of these rash guard swim shirts .

🩴 Water Shoes

UBFEN Water Shoes for Men Women Outdoor Hiking Aqua Kayaking Shoe Beach Swim Fishing Shoes C Black Grey Color Size US 11 Women 9.5 Men

These good quality water shoes with solid grips will help prevent falls in slippery areas and cuts on your feet in the rocky areas of Puerto Vallarta like Playa Conchas Chinas.

Make sure you pack a change of clothes for when you get out of the water, and bring this dry bag to pack up your wet clothes in a place where they won’t drip.

📲 Waterproof Phone Holder

Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch, Waterproof Phone Case for iPhone 15 14 13 12 Pro Max, IPX8 Cellphone Dry Bag Beach Cruise Ship Essentials 2Pack-8.3"

Some of the most Instagram worthy Puerto Vallarta sites are in, near and on the water, and I’m sure you’ll want to take a photo or two (or 22!) of your trip.

This waterproof phone pouch will come in handy as you snap photos and get video above and under the water — or, consider the GoPro Camera .

🤿 Mask & Snorkel

Popular for snorkeling and diving, the waters around Puerto Vallarta have healthy reefs teeming with marine life.

Some tours and places in Puerto Vallarta offer mask and snorkel rentals, but for sanitary reasons, and because the rentals are never good quality, I recommend this mask and snorkel set .

Evenings in Puerto Vallarta are the perfect time for dressing up since you’re on vacation — and I personally love wearing these floral maxi dresses , or these linen pants with a stylish top.

Resort casual wear is ideal for the evenings, but here are some ideas for what to wear at night in Puerto Vallarta depending on where you’re headed:

What to Wear to Dinner in Puerto Vallarta

Miuco Womens Bamboo Handbag Handmade Large Tote Bag Straw Beach Bags Beach Purse Size Small

Depending on your Puerto Vallarta resort , there might be a fancier evening dress code — but typically, a maxi sundress, or stylish pants and a top are perfect for dinner.

On vacation in Mexico, embrace bright colors to go with the country’s vibe, like this vibrant maxi dress with pockets . (#TeamPockets forever 😍)

Accessorize with this popular wooden purse , wedges with embellishments, sandals with rhinestones , or even high heels if you’re feeling fancy.

The dress code is generally relaxed with resort casual being the name of the game, and so as long as you’re not in a bathing suit, you should be appropriately dressed for dinner in Puerto Vallarta at most places.

One exception is the upscale restaurants in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta, like Café des Artistes and Restaurante ICÚ, which require you to dress more formally.

What to Wear to Go Clubbing in Puerto Vallarta

Newshows Women's 2024 Summer Maxi Dress Spaghetti Strap Spring Casual Boho V Neck Split Beach Long Flowy Dresses Trendy(Floral 66,M

Just like the resorts, the Puerto Vallarta clubs dress code differs depending on where you’re going — but still, you shouldn’t need to get too fancy, no matter the place.

Some nightclubs in Puerto Vallarta have a dress code, but bars in the Puerto Vallarta Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) tend to be more casual so you can get away with shorts and sandals.

A little black dress , sandals and this anti-theft crossbody bag will work for women at clubs, while men should opt for pants (jeans aren’t always OK), this guayabera shirt , and close-toed shoes.

Puerto Vallarta Packing Checklist: What to Pack for Puerto Vallarta

Breezy Lane Kimonos for Women Swimsuit Coverup Beach Cover Up for Swimwear Summer Kimono Cardigans Vacation Wear

👙 Bathing Suits : You’ll probably want to switch up your beach outfits vibe each day, pack a few of your favorite one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, or these long sleeve swimsuits to help prevent sunburns.

🎽 Cover-ups:  Bring a few to cover-ups so you can match your bathing suit of the day, or opt for this cover-up in a neutral color that goes with anything.

👚 T-shirts:  Cotton T-shirts, tank tops and workout style shirts always come in handy, so pack a few. (Puerto Vallarta Pro Tip: Bring shirts that don’t show sweat!)

🩳 Shorts:  Comfy shorts are a great item to pack for walking around your resort, any of these best Puerto Vallarta tours and excursions , or even a casual meal.

👗 Sundresses : Maxi dresses and sundresses are the easiest item to pack for Puerto Vallarta that go from day to evening, and can even function as a beach cover-up.

🥵 Linen Clothing:  Linen is a great material because it’s moisture-wicking (meaning it quickly moves sweat to the fabric’s outer surface), and keeps you cool.

🧥 Cardigan Sweater or Light Jacket:  For those who are always cold, you might use these at night, but many travelers won’t need either.

Best Shoes for Puerto Vallarta

Havaianas Women's Slim Flip Flop Sandals, Black, Size 7/8 Women's

🩴 Comfortable Sandals/Flip Flops: Bring sandals that are easy to slip on/off, and that you won’t mind if they get a bit wet. I own and love these Havaianas .

👡 Evening Shoes : For evening time flats,  these black strappy sandals  make any outfit look dressed up, and these espadrille wedges take it to the next level.

👟 Sneakers:   These Hoka sneakers , known as some of the most comfortable shoes for travel, are ideal for Puerto Vallarta day trips and off-resort activities.

🤿 Water Shoes:  If you’re planning on hitting the beach a lot (it’s rocky in some areas), going snorkeling, deep sea fishing and/or boating, don’t forget to pack these water shoes for Puerto Vallarta.

Best Dresses for Puerto Vallarta

ANRABESS Women Casual Loose Sundress Sleeveless Split Maxi Long Beach Shirt Dress Travel Vacation 2024 Summer Outfits Olive Medium

For me, these dresses with pockets are an absolute must when traveling because pockets always come in handy.

A few short sundresses, a few maxi sundresses, and a few rompers should be all you need in Puerto Vallarta, so choose your most comfortable pieces and only pack those.

Best Sunscreen for Puerto Vallarta

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion | Vegan and Hawaii 104 Reef Act Compliant (Octinoxate & Oxybenzone Free) Broad Spectrum Moisturizing UVA/UVB Sunscreen with Vitamin E | 8 oz

  • Water Resistant SPF 50 Vegan Sunscreen with UVA/UVB Protection and Vitamin E
  • Dermatologist approved, Sonny approved, and Hawaii 104 Reef Act Compliant
  • Oil free, Gluten free, Cruelty free, Paraben free, Octinoxate free, and Oxybenzone free
  • Never tested on animals ❤️🐰

A best seller on Amazon, we also love this Sun Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen for many reasons — especially because it’s cruelty-free (not tested on animals) and eco-friendly.

They also have other great products to consider, like this SPF 30 Lip Balm and this Sun Bum After-Sun Aloe Vera Gel to rehydrate your skin.

One thing to keep in mind when packing for Puerto Vallarta is that you must comply with FAA regulations for liquids — so liquids must be in these 3.4 ounce containers within your carry-on luggage.

Accessories to Pack for Puerto Vallarta

Becokan Beach Bags for Women, Large Waterproof Tote Bag with Zipper, Waterproof Sandproof Swim Pool Bag

👒 Sun Hat:  A hat is an absolute must to keep protected from the sun in Puerto Vallarta, and I love these fun straw hats with cute saying on them like “Resting Beach Face.”

👜 Beach Bag:  You’ll need something to carry all your essentials for a fun beach day, like this nautical-themed beach bag that just screams vacay.

😎 Sunglasses:  A must for any beach vacation — though I always leave my expensive pairs at home because sunnies are so easy to lose, and instead, I opt for cheap sunglasses from Amazon for all my Puerto Vallarta trips.

🧴 Sunscreen : Pack your favorite SPF 50 sunscreen because gift shops in Puerto Vallarta have limited options, and sunscreen there is more expensive than in the U.S.

🦟 Bug Spray:  Mosquitos can be an issue in Puerto Vallarta, especially during the rainy season from about June to October, so I recommend this eco-friendly bug spray that has a nice lemon smell.

What NOT to Pack for Puerto Vallarta

suitcase exploding with too many things in it

🤑 Valuables: While I’ve never had any issues with theft in Mexico, it can absolutely happen, so mitigate this risk by simply leaving your valuables at home.

💵 Dollars/Foreign Currency:  The cheapest and easiest way to get Mexican pesos is by using the ATMs in Mexico — so don’t bring a lot of cash with you because the currency conversion services take a hefty fee to change money.

Instead, just get money from any of the numerous Puerto Vallarta Airport ATMs. While there will be ATM fees, they’re cheaper than at the currency conversion kiosks.

💊 Your Whole Medicine Cabinet:  There are plenty of farmacias (pharmacies) in Puerto Vallarta, so you don’t need to pack a ton of meds.

If you have prescription meds, of course bring those, but know you can easily get over the counter medicines like Tylenol (it’s called paracetamol in Mexico though).

🍓 Foods:  It’s actually illegal to bring fresh fruits and veggies across borders, so make sure you don’t have those with you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Puerto Vallarta Outfits

What’s the weather like in puerto vallarta mexico.

Cancun weather chart

Temperatures average about 80-90°F (26-32°C) for much of the year, but can feel even hotter because of the humidity in Puerto Vallarta.

How should I dress for Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

As you now know, Puerto Vallarta is HOT all year-long, so choose clothes made of moisture-wicking materials that keep you cool (ie. cotton, linen, bamboo and spandex).

What kind of clothes should I wear to Puerto Vallarta?

For the most part, resort casual will work both on-resort and off-resort while you’re traveling to Puerto Vallarta.

Packing for Mexico resorts is usually easier than many think because swimsuits and cover-ups are what you’ll likely wear the most.

What is the dress code at Puerto Vallarta resorts?

It depends on the resort’s policy, so call them and double check before making your Puerto Vallarta packing list, but a safe bet would be to opt for resort casual wear.

Overall, Puerto Vallarta resort dress codes are lax during the daytime. However, in common areas and restaurants, avoid walking around in just your bathing suit.

At night, some Puerto Vallarta resorts enforce a stricter code of dress. Men should wear long pants and a collared shirt, while ladies can wear dresses or slacks and a blouse.

Can I wear shorts in Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

You can get away with shorts at the majority of places in Puerto Vallarta, but at night, a nice pair of linen pants, jeans or slacks would be better.

What shoes to wear in Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

For the majority of travelers, a pair of flip flops for the beach, dressy sandals for nighttime, sneakers for sporty activities, and water shoes should do it.

Do you need a sweater at night in Puerto Vallarta?

It depends — For people who always feel a bit cold, or if you’re visiting Puerto Vallarta in winter, you might want a light sweater or cardigan at night.

Are there mosquitoes in Puerto Vallarta Mexico?

Yes — You’ll likely encounter mosquitoes, particularly during the Puerto Vallarta rainy season in the summer, so come prepared with this eco-friendly bug spray that has a pleasant smell.

The mosquitoes aren’t known to be too terrible in Puerto Vallarta, but they can definitely be a nuisance during twilight hours in the wet season.

What to wear to a Puerto Vallarta destination wedding?

Always defer to the wedding’s dress code, but tropical sundresses , wedges or dressy flats usually work for women, and guayabera shirts and slacks for men.

What to Wear in Puerto Vallarta: Women’s Mexico Packing List

' src=

Are you planning a Puerto Vallarta trip with no idea what belongs on a Mexico vacation packing list? Do you always over or under pack? Are you a fashion-lover trying to plan the best looks for your trip? If any of these apply to you, this guide to what to wear in Puerto Vallarta is for you.

I’ve visited Puerto Vallarta with family multiple times, and it’s one of my favorite vacation destinations. Puerto Vallarta is a popular tourist destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico .

A PV vacation typically consists of pool days, adventure activities, nights on the town, and relaxing at your resort. Packing for so many different activities can be difficult, especially if you aren’t familiar with the dress code and customs of an area.

Keep reading for my ultimate Mexico vacation packing list that will make your packing for Puerto Vallarta easy and fun.

How to Dress in Puerto Vallarta

what to wear in puerto vallarta

After considering weather, I always consider the vibe of a destination when packing for a vacation. The vibe may be laid back, chic, athletic, or something else.

In my opinion, the best way to feel appropriately dressed for a destination is to match the vibe of others. I hate feeling over or under dressed!

The vibe of Puerto Vallarta is relaxed and casual. Resort wear is appropriate everywhere you visit in hotels or downtown. I don’t know of anywhere that has a dress code, so wear what makes you feel comfortable.

For me, that means casual sundresses and sandals for most occasions. Keep reading for more examples and shoppable outfit ideas.

What to Wear in Puerto Vallarta During the Day

Collage of what to wear in Puerto Vallarta during the day. Shorts, romper, sandals, maxi dress, beach bag, sunglasses.

During the day, if you aren’t at the beach or pool (see below for the cutest swimwear), you will likely be exploring the local towns, taking a food tour, or other casual activities.

During the day, I love a sundress, jean shorts with a blouse, or a simple romper. For shoes, a pair of comfortable, but cute sandals can be paired with different outfits and take up minimal space in your luggage.

What to Wear in Puerto Vallarta at Night

What to wear in Puerto Vallarta at night - maxi dresses, short dresses, strappy sandals

Night time activities in Puerto Vallarta Mexico often include going out to dinner , bars, or clubs. As I mentioned, Puerto Vallarta is casual, so anything goes. If you prefer, you can get away with shorts and a t-shirt at most places. I prefer to dress up a bit, so I usually go for a midi dress with sandals to look put together but still comfortable. As a rule-of-thumb, I always pack one nicer outfit in case I want to go out to a fancy dinner or event. The below image includes my top picks!

Poolside Outfits in Mexico

Beach and pool outfit ideas, swimsuits, cover up, beach bags, flip flops

One of the main reasons to visit Puerto Vallarta is to relax poolside with a cocktail in hand. At least, that is where you will find me for most of my vacation. The below graphic includes my must-have items for the pool.

Swimsuits – pack at least two swimsuits so you never have to put on a wet one. When packing swimsuits for Mexico, I like to bring a one piece to wear with shorts like a body suit, a fuller coverage option for water activities, and a bikini for optimal tanning.

Swimsuit Cover Up – I like bringing a cute cover up that I can easily throw on over a swimsuit to wear to the bathroom, bar, or poolside restaurant. This is appropriate attire at most Mexico pools, beaches, and casual restaurants.

Flip-flops – A pair of waterproof sandals is great for the pool area where they are guaranteed to get wet and can easily be slipped on and off.

Mexico Vacation Activewear

Active outfits for a mexico vacation - shorts, sports bras, sneakers, water bottle, hat

Above, I mentioned that I’m often poolside in Puerto Vallarta. When I’m not, I’m enjoying adventure activities in the jungle such as ziplining or ATVing. Pack some athletic clothes for outdoor activities or hitting the gym (if you do that on vacation).

Matching Sets – For a cuter take on athletic wear, get a cute matching set in bright colors. It will stand out in photos and make you feel super-confident.

Biker Shorts – In high-humidity destinations such as Mexico, I highly recommend biker shorts to prevent chafing. They are also super cute and comfortable.

Tennis Shoes – While you will spend most of your time in sandals, wear a pair of sneakers on the plane so you are prepared for activities.

Non-Clothing Mexico Vacation Packing List

In addition to all the clothes mentioned above, don’t forget to include these items on your Mexico vacation packing list.

puerto vallarta non clothing packing list

  • Sunscreen – The sun is intense, so protect yourself. Supergoop is my favorite for a lightweight formula and high SPF.
  • Portable charger – There’s nothing worse than running out of battery when you are relying on your phone for navigation and photos. This portable charger with built in cords will help with that!
  • Hat – A hat is another great way to protect yourself from the sun or hide crazy beach hair.
  • Bug spray – While you don’t need bug spray in your resort, bring some for any jungle activities.
  • Good book – Don’t forget a book for the plane and poolside. People You Meet on Vacation is one of my favorite travel-inspired books that is an easy-read.
  • Imodium – In case you have any stomach issues, you will thank yourself for having this on hand.
  • Reusable water bottle – Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated but remember to only refill it from filtered sources.
  • Waterproof phone case – Pack a waterproof phone case so you can safely take photos on or in the water.

Packing for Puerto Vallarta for Every Season

The first thing to consider when packing for Puerto Vallarta is what season you are visiting and what the forecast is . Year-round, expect warm temperatures and sunny skies. In the summer, plan for temperature ranging from 70-90 degrees. In the winter, expect temperatures between 60-80 degrees.

During the day, you can wear shorts and tank tops year-round. In the winter, you should pack a light sweater or jacket for colder nights.

In addition to the barely changing temperatures between seasons, check the forecast for rain or storms. The most active hurricane season in the area is in September-October, but tropical storms can occur anytime.

If there is rain in the forecast, simply add a rain jacket to your Mexico vacation packing list and you will be set. Storms tend to pass quickly so don’t change your packing list too drastically.

One Week Puerto Vallarta Packing List

Here is an idea of what items to pack for one week in Puerto Vallarta. Since the items aren’t bulky and you only need a few pairs of shoes, you could fit this all in a carryon with the help of compression packing cubes .

The basic idea of this one week packing list is to have one casual and one dinner outfit for each day. The casual outfit will either be swimwear, activewear, or a casual outfit.

If you know your itinerary ahead of time, adjust this packing list to include more active outfits or more beach outfits depending on your plans.

Packing List:

  • 2 Pairs of Shorts
  • 5 Sundresses
  • 3-4 Blouses
  • 3-4 Swimsuits
  • 1-2 Cover Ups
  • 1-2 Athletic matching sets
  • Socks/underwear
  • Sandals (heeled or flat)
  • Toiletries and other essentials

Summary of this Mexico Vacation Packing List

Overall, this Mexico vacation packing list includes everything you need to bring and plenty options of what to wear in Puerto Vallarta. Follow this list and you won’t be caught with an overweight bag or left with regret of forgetting something.

If you take anything away from this packing guide, the three things you cannot forget to pack are a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a cute cover up. This is what you will wear most of the time and the rest you can throw together. Also, be sure to leave a bit of extra room in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs.

FAQ – What to Pack for Puerto Vallarta

The best resort wear for Puerto Vallarta is a swimsuit and cover up by the pool or beach, shorts and a top during the day, and a cute sundress for dinner. The best resort wear for Mexico is often in light fabrics and tropical patterns.

Yes, you can wear jewelry in Puerto Vallarta. However, I recommend leaving your fine jewelry at home so you don’t have to worry about losing it in the water or during adventure activities.

My Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Mexico

mexico trip outfit ideas

Happy Monday, ladies!  This week is travel week.  As you may (or may not) know, I’m in Mexico right now, taking my first real vacation in 2 years.  We kicked off this week’s theme, yesterday, with 5 travel outfit ideas . Whether you’re leaving by plane, train, or automobile, I’m confident there are ideas for outfits that will work well for a day of travel.  Today, we’re continuing things with my travel capsule wardrobe.

This post is straight and to the point:  I’ve got 6 lay flats of the outfits I packed to Mexico.   I’ve gathered the links to each item, and interspersed shoppable widgets you can shop directly.

Travel capsule wardrobe

When putting together a travel capsule wardrobe, I keep the following in mind:

  • Pick a neutral color scheme. (I like black and white.)
  • Add pops of color for contrast.
  • Bring one or two dresses.  (I love jumpsuits which are a nice alternative to a dress.)

For a warm-weather getaway:

  • My suitcase is filled with swimsuits and coverups.

Over the years, I’ve put together tons of packing tips and tricks .  So make sure to check them out, if you’re looking to maximize your luggage.

Outfit 1

The first outfit features a blue Ponte split-neck from Ann Taylor .  I’ve paired it with a pair of black metro shorts , which hit mid-thigh.  You can easily substitute them with a pair of black city shorts , which hit higher above the thigh.  They’re both from Ann Taylor .

I’m loving cap toe espadrilles (old, similar here ) this Spring, and they feature in several of my outfits.  A wicker handbag is perfect for resort wear (old, similar here, here, and here ).  Further accessories include a hat and cuff bracelet .

Outfit 2

As I mentioned above, the foundation of my travel capsule is neutrals.  This outfit pairs a  black blouse from Banana Republic and white shorts (old, similar here and here ).  Same cap toe espadrilles (old, similar here ) as above, but this time I swapped the wicker bag for a matching tote (old, similar here and here ).

Crisp and clean, you can’t go wrong with black and white.

Blouse ( Banana Republic ) | Shorts (old, similar here and here ) | Tote (old, similar here and here ) | Belt ( Isabel Marant)

Outfit 3

As mentioned, jumpsuits (old, similar here , here , and here ) are a great replacement for dresses.  This super simple outfit is made by its accessories.  Pair a fun necklace for a pop of color and add a bracelet for interest.  The wicker handbag (old, similar here, here, and here ) works well.  Paired with strappy sandals , you’re ready for a walk on the beach.

Outfit 4

And now for a little color.  My fourth outfit features a crisp, white blouse from Talbots and these floral shorts from Ann Taylor .  The platform sandals are from Tory Burch and add a level of casual comfort that works well with the blouse.   I’m getting a lot of mileage from the wicker handbag (old, similar here, here, and here ), as it pretty much goes with anything.

Outfit 5

No beach vacation would be complete without a dress ( Tuckernuck ).  Absolutely loving the blue of the dress, and it works very well with these  espadrilles (old, similar here and here ).   The handbag ( Longchamp ), while not overwhelming, adds even more visual interest to an already engaging dress.

My last outfit is another neutral favorite.  Reusing the black metro shorts ( Ann Taylor ) from the first outfit, I’ve paired them with the white blouse ( Talbots ).  Reusability is important in any travel capsule, and if your wardrobe is neutral-based, that’s pretty easy.

This outfit works well with either a pair of cap-toe  espadrilles (old, similar here ) or these white sandals .

Looks like a wonderful selection, Beth! Hope you’re having a great time. I’d love to see some alternatives to shorts. While you look great in them, I have bobbly knees and need at least knee-length bottoms that help hide them. Fun skirts or dresses?

Hi Beth–these are all great outfits! Would you mind sharing the brand name of the black/white purse in outfit 2? I am in love with the bag and would like to be able to keep an eye out for it on poshmark etc. 🙂

Hi all, I am preparing for a 15 day Transatlantic cruise. Hubby and I haven’t done much travelling since the pandemic and we are very excited! I have several planning tools I use when maximizing clothes and baggage. Putting everything together is the key, just like Beth has shown. I actually create a spreadsheet of outfits, jewelry and undies as well as shoes. Happy to share!! Have fun Beth

Absolutely love these vacation-related posts! Enjoy every moment of your trip. Thank you for the inspiration you bring to our lives, Beth. We love you! 💛

Love the dress, wish it was still available. Lots of great ideas, especially black and white.

Excellent post, Beth. Always love your travel/packing tips. I mostly do sun dresses, that transition from beach to shopping and dinner, as I find them cooler, and I don’t have your great legs.

Enjoy your well deserved vacay 🥂

Hope you’re having a fabulous time! Looking forward to seeing photos in a future post.

I’m wrapping up booking excursions on a 2 1/2 week trip to Scotland and Northern England in June. With my hubby and our 9 year old in a small car and an average of 2 nights in each location, compact packing is key and my plan is 3 pairs of shoes, and a black/white/denim/occasional colour pops scheme, so this overview was really helpful, albeit a little warm weather for Scotlands ‘highs of 63 degrees’!

Just awesome! Enjoy Mexico and stay safe ~

Hi Beth, hope you are having a great time in Mexico!!! Your outfits look very pretty I love to see them on. Thank You

I LOVE your style: clothes, shoes, handbags, accessories except I need to wear shorts that are longer than you show, due to my age. If you have beach coverups, I would love to see them. Thank you so much for your style!

Love all these outfits!! As usual. 🙂 Would you please share how you find the Ann Taylor Metro Shorts to fit? I’m always between sizes and do not want to have to return the wrong size. Do you find them true to size? Thank you! And keep sharing all these wonderful outfit ideas.

What to Wear in Mexico City: Women’s Packing List & Outfits

Did you know there’s an unofficial dress code in Mexico City? If you’re planning to visit Ciudad de MĂŠxico (CDMX), read this article first. This article breaks down what to wear in Mexico City with stylish outfit ideas for women and a full packing list from my most recent trip so you’ll be all set for your trip!

And if you enjoy this post, you’ll love my complete Mexico City itinerary & travel guide !

Jazzmine standing on a Roma Norte rooftop in Mexico City, wearing a black silk dress and black double breasted blazer with pink stiletto sandals for a chic dinner in the neighborhood.

What is Mexico City style?

CDMX style is distinctly urban and reminded me more of my solo trips to New York City than any of the Mexican cities I’ve visited in the YucatĂĄn.

As the largest city in North America, and Mexico’s capitol, the street style is on par with major hubs like NYC and Paris. If you’re a sneaker head, you’ll love it here!

So, how do locals dress in Mexico City? The dress code is often described as more formal and Mediterranean and, while the former is accurate, I found that people tend to dress edgier. Black is the most common color I saw people wearing and, even on warm spring days, you’ll see leather jackets. In my opinion, definitely more rock & roll and artsy than preppy.

Packing for a springtime trip to CDMX requires layers. The days are generally warm, with passing rain, and evenings are cool. And besides the weather, you can go from a chic rooftop scene to a low-key hole in the wall in a matter of minutes.

Women’s Clothes to Pack for Mexico City

What to pack for Mexico city for a week: for a six day trip, I packed nine outfits, excluding travel clothes. I recommend grabbing items from the list below that you can mix and match for different settings and temperatures.

Breezy Dresses and Skirts made from natural fabrics like cotton and silk are perfect for spring through fall in Mexico City. I love how versatile this tee shirt dress and this silk slip dress are–both from Quince!

Comfortable Walking Sneakers that are stylish and easy to clean–classic Stan Smiths are my go-to choice.

Crossbody or Bum Bag to keep your belongings accessible to you but safe from pickpockets around busy tourist attractions. I like this more casual bum bag and this leather bag for a more dressed up look.

Jackets and Sweaters to drape over your shoulders during the day and wear properly at night when it gets chilly. I recommend an oversized denim , a moto jacket , and/or a men’s button down shirt .

Jeans and Trousers , which I felt the need to note because do people wear jeans in Mexico City is a common question on these internet streets and the answer is simply yes.

Polished Pair of Heels for evenings out. Grab shoes that are already broken in, especially if you plan to go dancing!

Sunglasses will protect your eyes as you’re out and about AND complete your look.

Tops like tanks, bodysuits, graphic tees, and collared blouses are all solid options.

Visor or Ball Cap if you’re visiting any sunny sites like Templo Mayor. This wide visor comes in multiple colors, has been my go to several trips, and gets compliments every single time.

I packed all of my CDMX outfits and essentials into just a carry-on bag and backpack. Here are my carry on packing tips , so you can do the same!

Jazzmine posing in Mexico City hotel room wearing a black and cream monogrammed sweater and shorts set, flat black leather mules, and a pink crossbody bag.

Mexico City Packing List Essentials

Cash to exchange for pesos. I recommend doing this at the airport when you arrive. Not every single business will accept cards but almost everywhere takes pesos.

Hotel Door Stopper for peace of mind, especially if you’re traveling alone!

Power Bank for long days out shopping and site-seeing.

Travel Credit Card so you can get rewarded for your vacation spending! Here’s my favorite travel card review if you don’t have one yet.

Travel Size Toiletries and Cosmetics including hand sanitizer and sunscreen because Mexico City is one of the sunniest big cities I’ve ever visited.

Do you know where to stay during your Mexico City vacation? Check out my honest review of a new boutique hotel in Roma Norte !

What not to wear in Mexico City?

I love making a style statement but when I’m traveling on my own, I try to balance local aesthetic with what I feel most myself in so as not to draw unwanted attention. Here are common questions about dressing in the CDMX aesthetic as a traveler.

Can you wear shorts in Mexico City?

There’s a lot of advice stating not to wear shorts or sandals to avoid looking like a tourist, which I think is dated. Especially in happening neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa, I saw several folks of all genders wearing shorts, though it was by no means a majority. I recommend opting for more tailored shorts if you do wear them.

Should I pack sandals?

Sandals are a slightly different story and close-toed shoes are definitely the primary shoe option. And, honestly, as with any big city, your feet will get dirty walking around so enclosed shoes are the best bet. Chic and structured sandals are not off limits but you likely won’t see any flip flops worn in Mexico City.

Dressing to blend in while being true to your personal style is one of my top solo travel tips for women !

Women’s Outfits to Wear in Mexico City

My favorite part of planning for travel is putting together looks that reflect my style and work for the unique experiences tied to each destination. But not everybody takes joy in that. So, use these outfit ideas as inspiration to style your trip to Mexico City.

Jazzmine standing on the steps of a porch in CoyoacĂĄn, Mexico City, wearing a long green silk dress, white oversized button down shirt, white adidas sneakers, and white stone ring.

I wore this easy outfit to spend a day in CoyoacĂĄn Mexico City , including a walking photo shoot experience and it was just perfect!

Jazzmine posing on rooftop at sunset in all black dinner outfit with pink shoes.

Check out all my favorite Mexico City restaurants , while you’re here!

Jazzmine on the street in Roma Norte, wearing a black tee shirt dress, oversized denim jacket, white sneakers, and pink crossbody bag.

A hands-free bag with a zipper was a must for walking around Templo Mayor and El Centro HistĂłrico, which is a super busy tourist hot spot. And it was hot with very little shade so sunglasses and even a hat are necessary!

Jazzmine sitting at a table at El Moro Churreria surrounded by floor to ceiling white and blue painted tiles, holding a mug of Mexican hot chocolate and wearing a pink and white floral dress.

I know I mentioned black as the dominant color in CDMX dressing but don’t be afraid to pack a colorful statement! I’m a fan of capsule travel wardrobes and find that having a common thread through my outfits makes packing easier.

For this trip, pops of pink that common thread via shoes, a handbag, and this bright floral maxi dress.

What to Wear for CDMX Excursions

Jazzmine standing in a field near Teotihuacan with hot air balloons landing in the background.

What to wear to the pyramids in Mexico City: Scarf | Boyfriend Jacket | Bodysuit | Leggings

There are plenty of green spaces in Mexico City but you won’t need to pack any athlesiure unless you venture out to the Teotihuacan hot air balloon experience , which I highly recommend! Although there’s almost no shade, it isn’t blazing hot in the springtime so bring a jacket, too.

Jazzmine in a naturally blue limestone pool wearing a brown one-piece swimsuit and polarized aviator sunglasses.

Similarly, since CDMX is not a beach town, swimwear is only a must if you plan to dip into your hotel’s pool. That said, a visit to Tolantongo Hot Springs are about three hours away and a bucket list experience that I wholeheartedly recommend. You will need a swimsuit for this excursion.

What to Wear in Mexico

mexico trip outfit ideas

Thomas Barwick/Getty Images

Part of planning your trip to Mexico will involve deciding what you need to pack and take with you. You want to be comfortable, look stylish and appropriate for the places you're visiting. A bit of thought beforehand about what clothing will be most appropriate for the destination, time of year , and activities you have planned will allow you to enjoy your trip without the discomfort of being inappropriately attired.

Mexicans may dress more formally, and in some cases, more modestly than people north of the border may be accustomed. Of course, you're free to dress as you wish, but if you choose to dress very differently from the majority of local people you may be singling yourself out as a tourist, and worse, you may be seen as being disrespectful to the host country.

Here are a few general guidelines about what to wear depending on your destination, the type of activities you plan to participate in, and the weather.

Depending on Your Destination

Inland, for example in Mexico City and in Mexico's colonial cities , people generally dress more modestly than they do along the coast and in beach destinations. Although it's changing a bit over time, women in Mexico's interior destinations seldom wear shorts, and men almost never do. Women who don't want to attract excessive attention from men would be well advised to avoid short skirts and shorts and revealing clothes in general, but especially when traveling alone. Lightweight pants and long skirts are good options, as are blouses and tops that cover your cleavage. Sleeveless tops are acceptable, tank tops less so.

For coastal cities and towns, casual clothes and shorts and tank tops are generally acceptable on the street. If you're going to the beach or pool, take something to cover up on your way there and back—wearing swimsuits away from the beach or pool is generally considered inappropriate. A traditional shawl, called a rebozo, is a practical and stylish item of clothing that comes in handy in a variety of situations. If you don't have one to bring with you, it's something you can easily purchase in Mexico.

Evenings Out

For restaurants or nightclubs, it is customary to dress a bit more formally. Some restaurants require men to wear long pants and closed shoes. The old adage "Men, wear pants. Women, look beautiful," still applies in some establishments. For men, guayaberas are generally a good option—you'll be cool and will be dressed appropriately even for formal occasions.

Depending on Your Activities

If you're visiting churches, short shorts, short skirts, and tank tops are frowned on, but longer, Bermuda type shorts and t-shirts are generally fine.

For visiting archaeological sites , comfort is key. Wear comfortable walking shoes. A closed toe is best for climbing pyramids and walking on sometimes treacherous surfaces. Although the weather may be hot, it's best to cover up to avoid excessive sun exposure and mosquito bites.

When it comes to adventure activities, of course it will depend on the type of adventure you have planned. For zip-lining, wear shoes that attach firmly to your feet so you don't risk losing them. Shorts that are long enough so that the harness does not chafe your skin is a good idea. If you have a white water rafting adventure planned, water shoes are the best, and quick drying clothes. You may want to wear a bathing suit under your clothes.

Check the Weather

A lot of people assume that the weather in Mexico is always hot, but that's not the case. Be sure to check the forecast for your destination before you leave so that you will be well prepared with a sweater or jacket and/or a raincoat if necessary. In southern Mexico, rainy season usually falls from spring through early fall. High altitude destinations such as Mexico City, Toluca and San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas can get quite cold, especially in the winter months, so be sure to pack extra layers.

In general you can't go wrong if you bring light layers in natural fabrics (cotton, silk or linen) that are comfortable, cover you appropriately and are breatheable in case it's hot or humid. These types of fabrics also wash and dry easily, so you don't have to bring too many pieces and can mix and match. If you need to buy some extra clothing, you can find department stores or other shopping opportunities in any larger town or city.
