Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60 + 20 litre Rucksack Review

In this honest Mountain Warehouse backpack review, I’m sharing my love for my trusty Traveller 60+20-litre Rucksack.

This was my pack of choice for many years, and is still going strong despite being several years old. I genuinely think the Traveller 60+20-litre Rucksack is the perfect backpack for first-time travellers!

Choosing the right backpack for long term travel or a Round-the-World trip is a serious decision. Your backpack can be your best friend while you’re away – or your worst enemy. An uncomfortable, heavy or poorly made one could genuinely ruin your trip!

Before I left for my first backpacking trip several years ago, I did a ton of research. I also asked lots of other travellers in order to find the best backpack for me. Several years and multiple trips later, it’s still serving me brilliantly…

Mountain Warehouse Backpack Review

This post is all about the Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60 + 20 Litre Rucksack. The pack has been around for several years, and remains one of the store’s most popular backpacks. Designed specifically with travellers in mind, rather than for use by hikers and campers, this pack is PERFECT for long term travel.

At around £60*, this is a really reasonably priced backpack and perfect for those whose budgets are tight.

Hopefully, this Mountain Warehouse backpack review will help you decide if the Traveller Rucksack is right for you…

What Size Backpack do I Need?

Deciding on the right size was the hardest part of selecting my backpack. Lots of travellers I know travel light, with a carry-on sized backpack at 35L or less. It sounds fantastic in theory, but in practice, travelling with only hand luggage just doesn’t work for me.

mountain warehouse backpack review

The best travel backpack size is around 50 to 60L. This should be large enough to carry everything you need, but not so big that it’ll make life impossible for you on the road! I settled on 60L, which has suited me fine over the years. It’s not carry-on sized, but it’s also not so big that I turn into a turtle. And I can fit everything I need for any trip length in a 60L backpack.

Capacity and Size

The traveller is a 60+20-litre rucksack. That means that the main bag has a 60L capacity, but also comes with a detachable 20L day-pack. In total, you have the option of 80L storage space.

I rarely use both bags together, because a whole 80L of stuff on my back turns me into a snail! But it’s nice to be able to attach them together when I’m checking the luggage in for a flight. The day-pack can also be clipped on to the straps so that it can be carried on the front if needed. “Double-turtling” is a great way to even out the load!

What I love about the Mountain Warehouse Traveller Rucksack is the comfy hip belt and the adjustable, padded shoulder straps, which mean that the bag fits me perfectly and the weight is spread across my whole body. It’s a surprisingly comfy backpack – as long as you’re sensible about weight distribution and don’t fill it with more than you’re capable of carrying (something I learnt the hard way).

Unzips all the Way Round!

But here’s what makes the Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60 + 20 Litre Rucksack the perfect backpack for long travel. It unzips all the way around, instead of opening just at the top.

Sounds like a small detail, but it’s one that makes a huge difference. Remember that sinking feeling when you realise that what you need is right at the bottom of your backpack? Not any more! A bag that opens all the way around, suitcase-style, is a backpacker’s best friend and genuinely makes life so much easier on the road.

Other Awesome Features

Another great feature is the free rain-cover, tucked away into one of the many pockets the Mountain Warehouse Traveller Rucksack has to offer.

Shockingly enough, rain isn’t a phenomenon exclusive to England, and wherever you travel on your RTW trip you’re bound to encounter a downpour at least once. The rain-cover has come in handy time and again, not just when it rains but also as a handy protector for the outside of my backpack when it’s in the hold of a bus on long journeys.

As I said, there are plenty of pockets, plus a separate zipped compartment at the bottom of the bag.

Better yet, there’s a zippable cover that tucks all the straps neatly out of sight, for ease when checking the bag in for a flight. Airlines usually ask you to tighten and tuck in all the straps when you check in a bag – which can ruin your perfectly-set-up strap adjustments – so being able to zip them all away ready to fly is a fantastic option.

Mountain Warehouse Backpack Review – an Update

The Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60 + 20 Litre Rucksack is seriously durable. It’s had to be, to keep up with me as I’ve lugged it all over the world.

My backpack has been dragged up steps and thrown onto buses, kicked under dorm beds and dropped, squashed, and taken out into all weathers from dry desert heat to jungle humidity. It’s even served as a seat MANY times. After 7 years of use (as of 2021), I really am happy to recommend this fabulous backpack as the perfect choice for long-term travellers with a lot of stuff to carry.

I hope this Mountain Warehouse backpack review helped! If you have any questions about the Traveller 60 + 20 Litre Rucksack, scroll down to leave a comment.

This bag looks similar to one I used about ten years ago, can’t remember the make, but it zipped all the way round so was really good for packing and then finding stuff. Try and stock up on those miniature toiletries before your trip – you can always buy stuff when you are there, but they take up less room and are lighter than normal sized bottles. Don’t forget padlocks for your zipped pockets too!

Hi Emily, just found your blog, off to south america in a few months so shall read your other posts, was just wondering how your mountain warehouse bag and boots held up as have seen a few bad reviews about them!

Hey Tess! How exciting for you – do you know which countries you’ll be visiting? You should also take a look at my other site, BackpackSouthAmerica.com, which has some more informative posts – it’s still growing but it may help!

The rucksack fared brilliantly on my trip – since South America I used it again on my trip to Vietnam and it’s still going strong. I love that you can unzip and open the entire main compartment, rather than rummaging through from the top – makes things so much easier. But it also means that you have to pack a bit neater to stop everything spilling out when you open up the rucksack – I recommend getting some packing cubes (you can check out my review of the eBags ones) to help keep things organised.

The boots didn’t quite survive the trip, but I blame myself and the environment rather than the boots themselves. I took them to extremes, got them soaked through a few times when walking in heavy rain or falling into rivers, wore them in snow in Bolivia, strapped them to the outside of my rucksack to save space, and generally just didn’t look after them. By the end of the five months there was a pretty big hole in the side of one boot and the material was kind of warped. The soles were still in good condition, and I think if they were better looked after they would have done a much better job!! My replacements were from Mountain Warehouse’s Extreme range, and I’d recommend these rather than the boots. You can read the review here: https://www.emilyluxton.co.uk/product-reviews/south-america-walking-shoes/ . Depending on what you’ll be using them for, you’re probably better off taking walking shoes rather than boots, as they’ll be lighter and smaller – making them easier to carry around!!

But I do recommend Mountain Warehouse products, especially the rucksack – which was fantastic, sturdy, and survived one hell of a trip!

Good luck with your adventures – it’s going to be awesome :)

Hi, thinking of buying this for a trip to Bangladesh, i just wondered if it is possible to lock the bag with a travel padlock? thanks

Hope that helps!

Hi, I have been looking at the Traveller Rucksack and I am wondering how it is in terms of security, is it easy to fit traveller locks etc?

It’s just a bog standard rucksack in those terms. There are zips which can be padlocked together pretty easily – but the rucksack itself is made from canvas type material which could be slashed. Personally, I keep all valuables in my daypack (which is an anti-theft one – https://www.emilyluxton.co.uk/product-reviews/travelon-backpack/ ) and leave the rucksack unlocked.

Hope that helps :)

I don’t suppose you have the dimensions of the backpack do you ?

I am wondering if it would fit as cabin baggage to save paying for checked luggage!

Thank you :)

Amazon has it down as 71 x 41 x 21 cm, not sure if that’s exactly right but I’d say it’s definitely too large for cabin baggage. It’s a big rucksack, I think hold luggage only!

I was wondering if a 13″ laptop would fit into the small daypack or would it be too much of a squeeze with not much protection?

Great post, thanks for the tips!

Hi Emma! It’d definitely fit in the daypack, I used to have a 15″ laptop which I carried in there. You’ll want to invest in a padded laptop sleeve though :)

Hi I am looking to get this bag but do you know how much the weight is of the bag?

Hi Demi!! According to Amazon it’s 2.8 Kg, which sounds about right to me. Not a heavy bag really :)

Thank you so much for this review. I have been umming and arhhing on a backpack for my first travels in a few months time and I was drawn to this one right at the start. I thought I would keep my options open and keep looking etc… but this review has really confirmed my decision to purchase.. right now! thank you very much.

Oh YAY that’s awesome! I really do genuinely recommend this backpack – especially for first-timers. It’s a good price, it’s sturdy, and it does the job! I’ve moved on to a slightly fancier wheeled backpack these days for most trips, but I still have the Traveller Rucksack and it’s still going strong.

Thanks for the review. I am considering this backpack for my first backpacking trip next year. Did you get the women’s fit size or normal unisex size? I’m 5ft 4inc woman and not sure if I should go for women’s fit backpack or normal one size?

When I bought it there was only one unisex size so that’s the one I have. I’m also 5’4″ and it was fine for me but I always felt like if there was one thing I’d improve it would be to give it a women’s shape. So if they have that option Id go for the women’s one :)

Hi I’ve got this backpack and wondering of you leave the day pack attached when checking it in to the hold? I need to but worried it may not be allowed.

I’ve never done that myself as I always use the day pack to carry my valuables. However, they attach securely so I think it should be absolutely fine – once they’re attached it’s essentially one large bag. Hope that helps :)

Review: Mountain Warehouse 60L+20L BACKPACK

mountain warehouse 60l 20l travel backpack

Firstly, myself and Josh have pretty good experience of backpacks, as we do both own two other backpacks. Two small 35 litre bags that served us well for a two-week trip around Italy. Two 50 litre bags, which were adequate luggage companions for a month in Thailand. To cut a LONG and admittedly boring story short we’ve had said bags for five years and they are rather worn and damaged. So began the search for new backpacks. Criteria: slightly bigger, easy to get in to without emptying the contents from the top and less clunky.

We read a lot of reviews, like a lot. I didn’t even realise there was so much to consider when looking for a bag but there is. For me, having travelled with a backpack before I knew I would again, but we read a lot re backpack vs. suitcase. Spoiler* I took a backpack and Josh a suitcase to Japan . Josh has since opted for the same backpack as me, as he nearly abandoned said suitcase on multiple occasions. Thinking about it maybe that’s why it didn’t make it back on our flight from Beijing. When you’re moving about a lot in a busy place, although, a backpack can be heavy – dragging a huge 20kg suitcase along side you is quite a struggle and an experience that Josh entirely hated.

The Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60L+20L Backpack:

Anyhow, I got side tracked – this is the bag that I travelled around multiple cities with for two weeks and subsequently, is the bag that we both have on our current round the world trip: Mountain Warehouse Traveller 60 + 20 Litre Backpack .  Oh and FYI (at time of writing) you can pick this up at 50% off for £59.99 – bargain!

Here’s a little bullet point list (so that I waffle less) of the backpacks best features:

  • The main bag is a very roomy  60L  and then the front  20L bag is completely detachable. Additionally, it comes with lots of extra pockets – the front mesh ones are super handy for water bottles. ( Anybody else hate that they provide measurements for bags in LITRES?! For those interested, mine was well packed but nowhere near full and weighed 11kg).
  • The detachable day bag is great for carry on hand luggage on the plane/bus. Additionally, it makes a great day pack for all the necessities when out sightseeing or hiking.
  • My favourite thing: there is a divisible main compartment that has zip access all the way round at the top and you can get in at the bottom! This was a game changer for me – no more rummaging through the entire contents of my bag to find that missing sock!
  • Second favourite thing: the bag comes with a flight cover, to protect your bag straps from getting caught and broken they zip away completely.
  • Who knew anyone could babble on about a bag so much, for more info click  here!
  • Bag also available from Amazon with free delivery.

Packing Cubes

I couldn’t talk about packing essentials without mentioning PACKING CUBES . These little organisational wonders changed my life! Okay I will stop with the exaggeration. But they were so helpful and if you have been contemplating purchasing, contemplate no more. Imagine not having to empty your whole rucksack just to repack it again! Imagine having a selection of appropriately sized clothing compartments and a spare one for washing! In all seriousness, they save time, save space, ensure that you pack lighter and are just an organisation junkie’s (ME) version of heaven. Ohhh and Josh recently got these for his birthday (not that he copies everything I do or anything).

Thank-you for reading, let me know of any other packing hacks in the comments!

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/travel-ethics-612334a0-0ca1-4128-b088-c13d1d8a91c3

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

mountain warehouse 60l 20l travel backpack

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

Not the actual bus in the end. The bus was more of a minivan.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

' src=

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

' src=

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

' src=

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

' src=

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!
