Famous Hawaii Movie Tour®

Lights, camera … action! If you’re a film buff, this Kauaʻi movie day tour is especially for you. With its natural beauty and tropical landscapes, Kauaʻi has long been a sought-out destination for Hollywood. You’ll love recognizing the iconic locations and backdrops from all your favorite films. For the maximum experience, immerse yourself in movie clips aboard the tour minibus and see how filmmakers made the island of Kauaʻi translate onto the silver screen.

See where Harrison Ford and Anne Heche survived a crash landing in Six Days and Seven Nights. Relive the fate of those shipwrecked on Gilligan’s Island and feel just like a competitor in The Amazing Race. Check out the waterfall shown in the opening credits on Fantasy Island and remember, dead men tell no tales on Pirates of the Caribbean. Also don’t forget about a classic Jurassic Park tour.

Want more movie trivia? Check out our Hawaii Movie Tour ® Location Guide for more information about different movie locations in Kauaʻi.

Hanalei Valley

This was such a fantastic tour that we will probably do it again in the future!

Our tour guide was wonderful. She was full of fun-filled facts about the island, Hawaiian culture and of course, told us about all the movies and movie locations. By the end of the tour, we had learned a lot about not only about movie making on Kauaʻi, but a lot about the island itself. This tour is definitely worth doing.

We planned this tour even before leaving the mainland as we expected it to be the highlight of our trip. It was a fun and relaxing way to see Kauaʻi as we watched film clips that were timed to match the arrival at various points of interest. Now that we are home, we are watching the movies again with our new memories!

Our bus driver was Sam! He was funny and informative. We loved being able to see the island and movie clips from a different perspective! They also had just got new buses which were beautiful and comfortable! They also make stops for potty breaks and ample photo shoot time! I would recommend to anyone who had never visited the island! It helps give you ideas of where you might wanna go again when you’re on your own!

5 Oscar-Worthy Movie Tours for Film Fans

Follow the steps of your favorite movie stars on trips inspired by Academy Award-nominated films.

Cottage Life

Getty Images

If the Oscars has you itching to visit the locations where major motion pictures were created, discover these film-inspired tours and start planning your trip.

Wondering where top Academy Award-nominated films were made? We've rounded up five Oscar-inspired tours where you can catch a behind-the-scenes look at top movie locations and retrace the steps of your favorite characters. From Burbank, California, to Mumbai, India, here's where to plan a movie-inspired vacation.

Bollywood Film City Tour Mumbai, India

Producing an average of 1,200 feature films per year, Mumbai is the mecca of the Indian film industry. And if you're a fan of the British, eight-time-Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire," Bollywood Filmcity Studios runs a Filmcity bus tour that whizzes through the teeming Goregaon East section of Mumbai, as a guide points out the film studios where it was shot, stars' homes and other landmarks. Star-struck dreamers partake in the two-hour Bollywood Dreams Tour, your close-up on post-production. Then, visitors are taken into a sound recording booth to pick a song, and lip sync it Karaoke-style while the guide records it on their cellphone. There's also an opportunity to read lines or dub the voices for the dialogue from major films. Enthusiasts should book the pricey, half-day Bollywood Studio Tour to SJ Studios sound stages, where a dozen permanent sets are in use 24 hours a day. And don't miss checking out the medieval jail where Jean Valjean's prison scene from the three-time Oscar-winning musical "Les Miserables" was shot.

Hobbiton and Weta Workshop Tours New Zealand

New Zealand saw an estimated 40 percent lift in tourism after the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Whether it's an authentic aerial tour of Middle-earth done by Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters or a Luxmore jetboat tour of the Upper Waiau River on the South Island, fans can follow in the footsteps of hairy feet almost everywhere. Aficionados begin on the North Island in Matamata, at the 1,250-acre Hobbiton, the built sets that include The Shire, hobbit holes and the Green Dragon Inn. A two-hour guided tour showcases shooting locations for the six Hobbit films that won 17 Academy Awards. If you're more of a filmmaker than a Hobbit fan, join the fascinating Weta Workshop Tour in Wellywood… err, Wellington. On the 45-minute guided tour, you'll meet some of the 230-person team responsible for designing and making all the physical armor, creatures and special make-up effects. Here, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at special effects by Weta Digital (three-time Oscar winner "Avatar" and Best Picture nominee "Mad Max: Fury Road" were shot there).  Plus, the Weta Cave (the Hobbits' major retail emporium) is found here.

Universal Studios Hollywood Universal City, California

On your next California getaway, head to Universal Studios Hollywood , a theme park with a movie pedigree that dates back to 1912. Universal's famous Backlot Tour has evolved into an entertaining, hour-long thrill ride. Between driving past the 60 backlot sets and soundstages still in use, the multimedia tram tour immerses you in movie magic with floods, train wrecks, a terrifying King Kong 360-degree 3-D attack, a new "Fast & Furious – Supercharged" car chase and a trip to Amityville to meet biting sharks from the three-time Oscar winner "Jaws." The tour is too much of a raucous romp to learn anything, so to brush up on your filmmaking knowledge, watch the Waterworld stunt show, the new Special Effects Show demonstrating visual and practical effects, and the Animal Actors – all included in your theme park ticket. Plus, this tour for visual learners is a really fun place to snap photos .

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood Burbank, California

Burbank is where movies go to get made. This easy-going small town is home to the Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Yahoo! among many other content producers. In 1928, the four Warner brothers bought a 110-acre studio lot, making the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood the real deal for ages 8 and older. On the two-hour tram tour, see where "Argo" (a Best Picture Academy Award-recipient) and "Casablanca" (three-time Oscar winner) were filmed, ogle the fantasy vehicles from all the Batman films and ask all the how-to questions you want from knowledgeable guides. All the props, sets, and costumes on display are authentic. And you can't miss the new Stage 48, which is packed with memorabilia and exhibits that illustrate movie magic: the motion capture used to make Sandra Bullock weightless in "Gravity" (winner of seven Oscars); the layering of dialogue and audio tracks that made the silence of space so terrifying; and much more. Get your own photo or video shot while riding the Batpod in front of a green screen, where Gotham streets are later composited. Or, splurge on the six-hour VIP tour instead. Even better, base yourselves in Burbank at the stylish Hotel Amarano , where you may have to maintain a low-key cool around the Oscar nominees in house for their press junket.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London United Kingdom

British production facilities are mostly off limits, but cinephiles can relish the artistry of all eight Harry Potter movies shot at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, an area just outside of London that hosted "GoldenEye" and the multi-Oscar-nominated "Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" during production.  In 2012, Warner Bros. reassembled many of the 588 wizarding sets, which had been kept with original props and costumes while J.K. Rowling wrote the series. The Hogwarts Bridge, audioguides, butterbeer and a sprawling gift shop keep fans under Harry's spell on a self-guided walking tour through the Great Hall and Dumbledore's office. Afterward, a visual effects setup allows fans to picture (and record) themselves playing Quidditch on a broomstick. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in 2016, there will be special screenings, newly opened sets and more interaction with filmmakers to understand how their magic wand works. Fans might catch live filmmaking nearby since this is one of the largest production facilities in Europe. And serious Harry Potter buffs might be interested to learn that that while the film franchise sold 450 million books, raked in $10 billion and garnered 12 Academy Award nominations, Harry Potter never won a single Oscar, leading an outcry among devotees to revisit the Academy's voting process.

Missy Elliott is ditching sweets to prepare to tour, says her dog is 'like my best friend'

movie by tour

First it was induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the inaugural female hip-hop artist.

Then, the announcement that after a 25-plus year career a first-ever headlining tour would be unveiled this summer.

Add to that a prominent role in Pharrell Williams’ currently untitled movie project about his life and clearly, it’s a Missy Elliott-palooza.

On July 4, a few days after she turns 53, Elliott will embark on the Out of This World tour with co-stars Busta Rhymes and Ciara , as well as Timbaland, who has known Elliott since high school and helped innovate smashes including “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “Hit Em Wit Da Hee,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It.”

The 30-date run, which kicks off in Vancouver, will wind through Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, Tampa, Atlanta, Baltimore, Brooklyn and Philadelphia among its stops.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Elliott, who lives in Atlanta, is also filming the Williams movie in Richmond, Virginia – both hail from the Virginia Beach area – while prepping for her tour. She'll star alongside Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph , Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry and fellow music luminary Janelle Monáe.

Here is what Elliott had to say about this fulfilling period in her life.

Question: Your performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in November was electrifying. What was going through your mind that night after being inducted as the first female rapper?

Answer: Whenever I go into any performance it’s a lot of thought process, from the clothes to what songs you’re going to perform to the dances. I think most of the time I’m engulfed in everything. But this time I felt like I was floating because I was in the room and watching many artists that had been around for way longer than I have just getting into the Rock Hall. It’s still a pinch-me moment, like "Wow, I’m here." … Until stuff like that happens, like (being inducted into) the Songwriters Hall of Fame , those things felt like they were so out of reach until I was on that stage.

With you, Eminem, LL Cool J and several other hip-hop artists getting into the Rock Hall, do you think they’ve improved their acknowledgement of the genre?

It’s a good thing, an amazing thing, and hopefully me being the first female, it opens the door for other females and hip-hop artists in general because it has had such an impact on so many genres of music. I go to Japan and all of the stores are playing nothing but hip-hop.

It’s hard to believe this is your first headlining tour, so why now?

My first tour was Lilith Fair (in 1998). Then I did Rock the Mic with Jay-Z and 50 Cent (in 2003), and my last tour (in 2004) was me, Beyoncé , Alicia (Keys) and Tamia. I had the opportunities to tour alone, but because I was so engulfed in writing and producing for myself and other artists, I never felt like I wanted to be out that long without being able to continue doing that. But then one day I was like, "I want to go out." My management, they didn’t believe me. But my manager called me the next day and said, “Are you serious?” and I said, "Yeah, I want to go out." I believe God aligned it. Mentally, I was ready. Physically, I was ready.

Why is it called the Out of This World tour?

The first thing I thought of is anything that I have done sonically, musically, visually has been kind of out of this world. I felt even Busta , who I’ve watched before I even came along, has been that way, too. And Ciara and Tim(baland), his music has been futuristic . So that title was fitting for all of us. I believe we all embody being out of this world.

What can you share about the show or production?

It’s going to be a little bit of everything . I’m biting my nails wanting to tell what will happen, but I want everybody to come and see it. I can tell you the energy is going to be through the roof. I tell people bring your slides, no heels, no shoes, because you’re gonna dance the whole night.

Since touring isn’t typical, how are you preparing?

It’s most definitely a grind. You have to be in a good mental space. I have Busta and Ciara and Timba out there so it’s going to feel like family and not, I’m going to work. On top of that, I have a physical therapist I’m starting with and they put these big things on my legs to loosen everything up. And I have to start eating right. I am most definitely putting down any sweets, and that is hardest thing for me. I’m gonna eat my last cupcake in a week. But I hike the mountains every day.

More: Hip-Hop legends Big Daddy Kane, Melle Mel celebrate the genre's 50th anniversary

Is there anything you have to bring with you on the road?

My (Yorkie) dog, Fendi. I lost one of my dogs in November and that crushed me, so she’s like my best friend. She calms my anxiety. She’s living her best life. She’s in a couple of Instagram photos (on my page), and she has her own page and her own fans.

As you get ready for a headlining tour and look back at what you’ve accomplished, do you feel you’ve become a pioneer for women in hip-hop?

I guess now I can say that yeah, I get a chance to sit back and look back at all the new females coming. People don’t know how hard it is when you’re a female coming up. My hat goes off to them for doing it for real. You have to be tough and strong and consistent, and I’m on the sideline cheering them on.

Review: Like the movie, entertaining ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ musical is all about the man behind the mask

Rob McClure heads the touring cast of "Mrs. Doubtfire."

Rob McClure’s tour-de-force performance in the touring show at the Civic Theatre helps the musical overcome its by-the-numbers book

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

It’s rare for a Tony-nominated actor who originates a role on Broadway to play the same role in the show’s national tour. The stars prefer to stay in New York and leave the grueling road schedule to the hungry up-and-comers.

But Rob McClure, who earned his second Tony nod in 2022 for creating the title role in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was having so much fun in the part, he wasn’t ready to let it go. It’s easy to see why. At Wednesday’s performance at the San Diego Civic Theatre, where the musical is playing through Sunday, it was clear that “Mrs. Doubtfire” is the role of a lifetime for this multitalented actor.

During the 2-1/2 hour show, McClure plays two distinct characters; does dozens of spot-on celebrity impressions; performs tap, swing, jazz and athletic breakdance numbers; live-creates a song via audio loop, while performing with hand puppets and accents; does dozens of dizzyingly fast costume changes; and performs tireless physical comedy. (San Diegans may remember McClure’s facility for movement and humor when he originated another Tony-nominated role as Charlie Chaplin in La Jolla Playhouse’s pre-Broadway tryout of “Chaplin” in 2010.)

Leo Roberts as Stuart and Rob McClure as Mrs. Doubtfire in the national tour of "Mrs. Doubtfire."

McClure’s tour-de-force mastery in the dual role is the best part of this musical, which is based on the 1993 Robin Williams film about Daniel Hillard, a struggling San Francisco actor who secretly creates an elderly Scottish nanny alter-ego to care for his children, after losing custody to his ex-wife, Miranda. The by-the-numbers book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell is a virtual carbon-copy of the movie, with a few additions that take advantage of McClure’s dance and vocal talents.

The score by Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick is padded with just-OK filler numbers, though there are two touching ballads: “I Want to Be There, sung by McClure, and “Let Go,” sung by Maggie Lakis, who plays Miranda. There’s also a terrific comic duet, “Big Fat No,” sung by McClure and Leo Roberts, the endearing actor who plays Miranda’s hunky new boyfriend, Stuart.

McClure and Lakis are married in real life and have good onstage chemistry, and both do well at portraying the darker and wounded sides of their characters. Romelda Teron Benjamin is amusingly deadpan as the seen-it-all court officer Wanda. Giselle Gutierrez is a good actress as Lydia, Daniel and Miranda’s eldest daughter Lydia. And Aaron Kaburick and Nik Alexander add comic moments as Daniel’s brother Frank, and his husband Andre, respectively.

Director Jerry Zaks, with an assist from choreographer Lorin Latarro, keeps the show’s action from sagging, though some comic lines feel forced and the children’s choreography is particularly stiff. The producers have mounted a handsome tour, but there’s one problem. The latex partial mask that McClure dons to quickly transform into Mrs. Doubtfire covers his eyebrows, forehead and cheeks, so it rob the character’s face of heightened emotions.

Producers are increasingly taking the safe route to audiences’ hearts by using popular movies as source material. “Mrs. Doubtfire” may not be that innovative in its transfer to the stage, but with McClure manning the ship, it’s definitely entertaining.

The 30 Best Documentaries of All Time, Ranked

The documentary genre is a more varied one than many people give it credit for. As a type of film, documentaries do usually aim to inform or educate about some kind of non-fiction story or topic, but that's not their sole purpose. Some aim to evoke certain feelings or experiences more than anything else, others aim to present an argument or point of view in a persuasive manner, and others are mostly concerned with simply entertaining audiences the way a work of fiction might. Furthermore, some documentaries aim to do a combination of the above, or maybe even none of the above, instead opting to do something else entirely

Exploring the world of documentary filmmaking can be a truly eye-opening thing to do, and reveal worlds or unique perspectives that aren't as easy to explore through other genres. It's safe to assume that documentary movies will never go out of style, which makes keeping track of the best documentaries out there worthwhile. Some of the best documentaries of all time have been around for decades, while others are more recent, and deal with ongoing, ever-topical issues. The films below aren't merely good documentaries; they're largely considered all-timers within the genre, and can all be described quite reasonably as the best documentaries ever. What follows are some of the finest documentary films of all time, ranked below from great to greatest.

30 'Bowling for Columbine' (2002)

Director: michael moore.

Coming out years before crime documentaries became Netflix's bread and butter, Bowling for Columbine uses a horrific crime spree as a jumping-off point to explore American culture, and its seemingly unending love of firearms. The event it's all framed around is the Columbine High School massacre of 1999, which claimed more than 20 victims.

In one of the best movies of 2002 , Michael Moore made arguably his most passionate and emotional movie with Bowling for Columbine , with the editing and presentation making the arguments put forward quite persuasive. It's in-your-face and uncompromising as a documentary, and it works well as something that clearly wants to start a conversation about a serious topic.

29 'Sans Soleil' (1983)

Director: chris marker.

Sans Soleil is a documentary that's hard to summarize, and has a rather experimental approach to the format/genre. It has little by way of narrative or a direct argument that it wants to present, instead being an artistically presented odyssey through a woman's abstract thoughts, often relating to the meaning of life and human existence.

Sans Soleil feels broad and open to interpretation, but it's the kind of thing where someone could watch it and have it fully click , gaining an entirely different understanding than other viewers. This might make Sans Soleil something of an acquired taste, but it's worth at least one watch for those who appreciate unconventional and adventurous documentary movies .

Watch on Criterion

28 '13th' (2016)

Director: ava duvernay.

Standing as one of the most important cultural/political documentaries in recent memory, 13th is a difficult yet essential watch. It tackles the U.S. prison system with a particular focus on the racial inequality present within it, tying the way prisons function in modern times to the way slavery functioned back during the nation's earlier days.

It might be a difficult thing for some viewers to hear and grapple with, but 13th is persuasive and remarkably good at presenting the case for this claim. It's all assembled amazingly well, and makes for the kind of film that wants to frustrate, get people thinking, and have viewers reassess what they thought they knew. In these ways, 13th is a resoundingly successful documentary.

Watch on Netflix

27 'Gimme Shelter' (1970)

Directors: albert and david maysles, charlotte zwerin.

It's no secret that Martin Scorsese loves The Rolling Stones , having directed his own documentary about them and using their songs throughout his films. He seems particularly fond of the song "Gimme Shelter," which is also the name of this 1970 documentary about The Rolling Stones, focusing on one particularly infamous concert they performed in 1969.

Gimme Shelter is one of the few concert movies that could be described as nightmarish , because even if you enjoy some of the music on offer, the stark presentation of a tragic event is ultimately what's most memorable. It's an intense watch that's probably not for everyone, but it certainly stands as one of the most distinct - and harrowing - music documentaries of all time .

Watch on Max

26 'Man on Wire' (2008)

Director: james marsh.

Somehow functioning as both a documentary and a heist movie at the same time, Man on Wire tells a wild true story that was also adapted into a feature film with 2015's The Walk . It's about daredevil/tightrope walker Philippe Petit , and the way he managed to execute a stunt in 1974 that involved walking between the two towers of the World Trade Center, which had then only recently been built.

Man on Wire 's pacing makes it feel more dynamic and thrilling than many other documentaries out there , and some of the footage/photographs captured prove awe-inspiring to look at. It's artistically presented and genuinely exciting, serving as both a psychological exploration of a rather unique man while also celebrating the absolutely wild feat he managed to pull off.

Man on Wire

Watch on Hulu

25 'Grey Gardens' (1975)

Directors: david maysles, albert maysles, ellen hovde, muffie meyer.

For better or worse, Grey Gardens feels like a proto-reality TV show, arguably leading the way for the genre to exist in all its wild , uncomfortable, and sometimes exploitative glory. This is because Grey Gardens simply observes two real-life people who live strange lives, and may or may not be exaggerating their odd behavior because cameras are present.

The two women at the center of Grey Gardens are relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis , and they live in a large yet rundown house, and have very isolated lives. It's an unsettling and uncomfortable film that blurs the line between documentary and drama , but ultimately one that's proven influential within the genre, and a somewhat haunting watch that has resonated with many viewers since its 1975 release.

24 'They Shall Not Grow Old' (2018)

Director: peter jackson.

There have been many great films about the First World War , and among them would have to be They Shall Not Grow Old . It was released on the 100th anniversary of the conflict's end, and uses colorized and meticulously restored footage to depict the harrowing experience of trench warfare in a way that's never been shown before in previous WW1 documentaries.

It was an ambitious project directed by Peter Jackson , and though getting the footage to look so striking would have taken a great deal of work, the results speak for themselves. They Shall Not Grow Old isn't an easy watch, but it is an essential one , and recontextualizes a century-old conflict by presenting an emotional and intimately personal look at the horrors of war.

23 'Life of Crime: 1984-2020' (2021)

Director: jon alpert.

Life of Crime: 1984-2020 may have a bit of a clunky title, but as a film, it's anything but clunky. It's the third and final installment in a series of documentaries that follow several individuals who engage in petty crime and/or struggle with drug addictions, with it all being filmed in an uncompromising and very raw fashion.

This 2021 film spends one hour recapping the first and second documentaries in the series (which covered the 1980s and 1990s respectively) before moving on to what happened to the subjects at its center in the 21st century. Life of Crime: 1984-2020 sheds light on a group of people who've seemingly been forgotten by society, showing their flaws while also being empathetic. It's devastating, proving hard to watch, and maybe even harder to forget.

22 'The Act of Killing' (2012)

Director: joshua oppenheimer.

Though The Act of Killing isn't a horror movie by any means, it feels more brutal and terrifying than most could ever hope to be. It covers a difficult subject in a unique yet stomach-churning way, focusing on the Indonesian mass killings of 1965-1966 which saw somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million people being killed (mostly people associated with communism, or believed to be).

It follows various people who participated in these killings more than 40 years on from the events, with the filmmakers getting these individuals to recreate what they did through the guise of "making a film" in the hope they'll realize the brutality of their past actions. The Act of Killing is a daunting look at the dark side of human nature , as well as a terrible period in history that's still in living memory for many people living today.

21 'The Thin Blue Line' (1988)

Director: errol morris.

The true crime genre has experienced a boom in the last five to 10 years, and on a streaming service like Netflix in particular, it seems difficult to avoid documentaries about crime. Many documentaries that are definable as true-crime owe a great deal to 1988's The Thin Blue Line , which was revolutionary for documentary filmmaking as a whole.

It follows the investigation surrounding the murder of a police officer in Dallas, criticizing certain aspects of how it was done, and arguing that the primary suspect might not have been as guilty as detectives believed. The Thin Blue Line was influential enough to impact criminal proceedings, ultimately highlighting how powerful a well-argued and intelligently presented documentary can be.

20 'Harlan County, USA' (1976)

Director: barbara kopple.

While Harlan County, USA may be almost 50 years old, it remains relevant, and will continue to feel vital for as long as workers don't feel fairly compensated for their work. It focuses on a specific 1973 strike in Harlan County, but the ideas and struggles explored here are relevant to various industries and groups of workers.

The "USA" part of the title could be referring to Harlan County, or it could be read as emphasizing that the sort of conflict here is something felt throughout the USA, back in the 1970s and to this day, too, with the recent Writer's Guild of America strike . The presentation in Harlan County, USA is simple, no-nonsense, and ultimately persuasive, ensuring it stands as a classic - and essential - work of documentary filmmaking.

19 'The Times of Harvey Milk' (1984)

Director: rob epstein.

Biographical stories can often be told more powerfully through documentaries than in traditional feature films (though the former isn't likely to earn as many Oscar nominations as the latter). This is demonstrated by 1984's The Times of Harvey Milk , because while the 2008 film Milk covers similar ground and is compelling, seeing it play out in a documentary is even more powerful.

As the title implies, this documentary covers the life and career of Harvey Milk - both cut tragically short by his assassination in 1978. The Times of Harvey Milk aims to celebrate what he accomplished for gay rights in America while mourning his untimely passing , and serves as an emotional and extremely well-presented look at Milk and his life.

18 'Free Solo' (2018)

Directors: jimmy chin, elizabeth chai vasarhelyi.

Viewers with acrophobia should stay well away from Free Solo , because it can be genuinely hard to watch for anyone who has even a slight fear of heights. It follows Alex Honnold as he attempts to climb a 3000-foot-high rock face by himself, and without the safeguards of ropes or safety gear.

As far as "man versus nature" documentary movies go, this is easily one of the greatest of all time, and in a way, ends up being more heart-racing than the vast majority of blockbuster thrillers out there (even the great ones). As far as adrenaline-rush documentaries go, few can compete with what Free Solo pulls off.

Alex Honnold faces the biggest challenge of his career, climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He pursues it Free Solo, which means climbing without a rope and alone.

17 'American Movie' (1999)

Director: chris smith.

A heartwarming and funny documentary , American Movie is one of the essential documentaries about the filmmaking process of the last few decades . It centers on independent filmmaker Mark Borchardt and his attempts to complete his movie, an unusual horror film about addiction and demonic cults called Coven .

It's one of those films that's likely to hit home for anyone who's undertaken a daunting creative project before, or even those who've ever dreamed of fulfilling their creative desires. It celebrates art - no matter the budget or the technical qualities - and even for non-creatives, is likely to provide plenty of entertainment value thanks to its humor and down-to-earth charms.

Rent on Apple TV

16 'Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse' (1991)

Directors: eleanor coppola, fax bahr, george hickenlooper.

While American Movie shows the struggles of independent filmmaking, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse - released at the other end of the 1990s - looks at the struggles of big-budget filmmaking. It follows the infamous production of Apocalypse Now , a film that ended up being a classic, but was plagued with just about every problem under the sun before release.

For as harrowing as the psychologically tense and violent war film is, Hearts of Darkness makes the fight to get the film made look equally brutal and mentally devastating . Francis Ford Coppola and the rest of the cast and crew went to hell and back to make one of the greatest films of the 1970s, and this documentary captures that nightmarish production in stark, eye-opening detail.

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

15 'the beaches of agnès' (2008), director: agnès varda.

Agnès Varda was one of the greatest and most creative French filmmakers of all time. She was known for both her feature films and her documentary work, and while titles like Cléo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond are her best-known when it comes to the former, 2008's The Beaches of Agnès is probably her greatest achievement for the latter.

It plays out like a visual autobiography, with Varda reflecting on her youth, her filmmaking career, and her relationship with fellow French filmmaker Jacques Demy . The Beaches of Agnès is touching, entertaining, visually dazzling, and thought-provoking , all thanks to Varda's unique outlook on life, and could serve as a good introduction to the filmmaker's immense body of work.

14 'Man with a Movie Camera' (1929)

Director: dziga vertov.

Without Man with a Movie Camera , the entire documentary format may look entirely different today. It's likely one of the most important and influential documentaries of all time, using inventive visuals and creative editing techniques to show how life was in the Soviet Union during the 1920s.

Beyond that premise, there isn't really a whole to this silent film. Yet the style is what makes it dazzling and engaging to this day, and even if it doesn't grab all modern viewers, surely everyone can recognize its significance for the documentary format as a whole. At only 68 minutes long, documentary fans don't exactly have an excuse not to at least give it a shot.

Watch on Vudu

13 'Woodstock' (1970)

Director: michael wadleigh.

Woodstock is far from the only iconic concert film (more on those below), but it covers what many would argue was the most significant live music event of all time. That was 1969's Woodstock Music & Art Festival, an event that went for three days, saw 32 different musical acts perform, and was attended by more than 400,000 people.

A huge film is needed to capture such a large-scale event, and Woodstock is more than up to the task. The theatrical cut runs for over three hours, and a director's cut runs for almost four, with it capturing some iconic live music (including performances by Jimi Hendrix , Janis Joplin , and The Who ) as well as documenting what the festival was like for those attending, and the ways organizers dealt with certain issues that came about while the festival was underway.

12 'Stop Making Sense' (1984)

Director: jonathan demme.

Stop Making Sense isn't just one of the best films of 1984 ; it's right up there as one of the best concert films of all time. It documents new wave band Talking Heads at their creative and commercial peak, going through an excellent tracklist over 88 glorious, upbeat, entertaining minutes.

There isn't much of a message or story here, of course, but the way it's shot, edited, and paced is certainly more intricate than most concert films. Stop Making Sense is the gold standard for how music documentaries about concerts should look and feel , and an essential watch, regardless of whether you're a big Talking Heads fan.

Watch in Cinemas

11 'Paris Is Burning' (1990)

Director: jennie livingston.

Despite only running for about 70 minutes, Paris Is Burning covers many years, focusing on the New York drag scene throughout much of the 1980s. It looks at a subculture that was likely underground and unseen for many people during that time, and gives those who belong to it a chance in the spotlight.

Paris Is Burning holds up as one of the most important documentaries of the 1990s, and one that is still relevant today , even if these sorts of subcultures are a little more well-known today. It shows the power that documentary films have when it comes to raising awareness for different people and groups, and for doing so here with an LGBTQ subculture, Paris Is Burning is a landmark.

Taylor Swift Madrid mysterious figure

Taylor Swift: What Was the Mysterious Figure at the Madrid Eras Tour?

By Apoorv Rastogi

Taylor Swift ‘s recent Eras Tour concert in Madrid has attracted a lot of attention after a mysterious figure was spotted during her show at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Fans have been curious to know everything about the unknown shadow, with many associating its identity with one of Swift’s ex-boyfriends.

Here are all the available details concerning the mysterious figure.

Shadowy figure at the Taylor Swift Madrid concert explained

A recent video of Taylor Swift’s concert in Madrid, posted by a private TikTok account, has gone viral due to the mysterious nature of its content. In the clip, a shadowy figure can be seen moving rhythmically to Taylor Swift’s tunes at the top of the stadium’s rafters. Several fans on the internet have come up with absurd explanations of the silhouette being a supernatural entity. However, the question that has stumped most is how the unknown person climbed up to such a high-level platform.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pop Base (@popbase)

Per US Magazine , multiple social media users have come up with rational clarifications, debunking all the conspiracy theories in the process. Santiago Bernabéu, the home stadium of Real Madrid, actually has a walkable path close to its roof. Popularly known as a skywalk, the track was recently added to the arena during its renovation. Per a video on the football club’s YouTube channel, the path has been installed on level 10 of the stadium. Spanning two athletics tracks, the skywalk allows spectators to get a 360° view of the majestic Santiago Bernabéu. However, at the time of writing, the path has yet to be opened to the general public.

The identity of the mysterious figure is still unknown. Moreover, fans have speculated that the incident could be a sign from Taylor Swift regarding her future projects. However, both these theories about the peculiar event remain unconfirmed at the moment. Meanwhile, the 14-time Grammy winner continues to focus on the European leg of her Eras Tour.

Here in the U.K., Swiftmania is upon us: the pop superstar kicks off the first of 15 concerts in Britain on Friday night.

Projected to contribute a whopping 997 million pounds (or $1.26 billion) to the U.K. economy, Taylor Swift officially descends on Edinburgh as thousands flock to the Scottish capital, donning sparkles, handmade bracelets and cowboy boots — the mark of the Eras Tour .

Ticket costs are in the thousands. The Pennsylvania-born star has sold out her shows worldwide. She is second only to The Beatles with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. Everyone’s asking the same question: Why is she so popular? Her peers have an idea.

“She wants it,” fellow star Lana Del Rey told BBC News . The Born to Die singer was featured on Swift’s 10th studio album Midnights , on the track Snow on the Beach . “She’s told me so many times that she wants it more than anyone. And how amazing — she’s getting exactly what she wants. She’s driven, and I think it’s really paid off.”

Brit Award winner Raye called Swift “an absolute powerhouse.” The singer continued: “She is just one of those rare timeless artists who gets it right every time.”

KT Tunstall, best known for her hit Suddenly I See , said Swift has the “resilience and the chutzpah to be the boss of an enormous machine, employing thousands of people.” Tunstall added: “To be able to handle that and handle what’s coming at her publicly, you’ve just got to be a one-off.”

Almost 1.2 million fans are estimated to attend the 15 U.K. tour dates with an average of 848 pounds ($1,085) spent on each ticket.

“When it comes to cultural icons like Taylor Swift — like we saw with Elvis and Beatlemania in the ’50s and ’60s — supporters have such a strong connection to the artist and to the rest of the fandom that the desire to spend becomes even more powerful. For non-fans, 848 pounds may seem like an enormous amount to splash out on a concert — but for Eras Tour ticketholders, every pound they spend is an investment in the memories they’ll create.”

In the clip, Lawrence holds onto Smith’s left hand as he introduces the “Black Knight” star to off-screen fans.

“There is something going on with Martin,” reads text on the video.

Review: In ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ the action party rolls on, vigorously and untroubled

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunite for a fourth chapter of the Miami-set buddy-cop action franchise, which at this point may be too well-oiled a machine.

Before the L.A. event, fans also voiced concern on YouTube , where they commented on the “Bad Boys” duo’s “Extra” interview published two weeks ago. “I’m worried about our brother Martin,” one YouTube user wrote. Another YouTuber commented, “Martin is NOT ok. Get well Marty Mar.”

Lawrence dismissed those concerns Tuesday, telling Hot 97 radio host Ebro Darden there’s “no need for people to be concerned.”

“I’m healthy as hell, stop the rumors,” he said .

For Hot 97, Martin and Smith reflected on their careers and the beginning of the “Bad Boys” franchise, which premieres its fourth film on Friday. In her review , film critic Katie Walsh wrote that the newest “installment favors the goofy.”

“It’s a thin tapestry of lore with some interesting creative embellishments, but without any real interest in character, it feels flimsy and disposable,” Walsh adds. “You could do worse, but you could certainly do better.”

‘Guess who’s back!’ Martin Lawrence announces his first comedy tour in eight years

Martin Lawrence announces his first stand-up comedy tour since 2016. It kicks off a month after his movie with Will Smith, ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ premieres.

May 8, 2024

This summer will be a busy one for Lawrence. In addition to “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the “Martin” star will embark on his first comedy tour in eight years. His Y’all Know What It Is! tour , announced in May, will kick off July 20 in Chandler, Ariz. He will take over Crypto.com Arena on Dec. 6.

Lawrence told Hot 97 that stand-up comedy has been his “saving grace” because it allows his fans to gain some “insight [into me] and how I view the world.”

“I’m so glad that I’m afforded the opportunity to always be able to go out at any time and perform stand-up in front of an audience,” he said. “They be there for me. My audience is a dedicated audience — I got like [Beyoncé’s] beehive.”
