16 Feb 2024
Tix from $127.50
After an absence of well over a decade, Mudvayne and Coal Chamber have joined forces for an EPIC Australian tour in February.
- Presented by: Teamwrk Touring & The Phoenix AU
- Mudvayne have sold more than six million albums worldwide with 3 Platinum albums in Australia alone.
- They were honoured with the first ever MTV2 Award and were heavily featured in the pages of Rolling Stone, Revolver, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, Blender, Maxim, Spin, Guitar World, USA Today and countless others media outlets where metal bands fear to tread. They were even written into a pivotal episode of The Sopranos!
- For most artists, such achievements usually mark the summation of an entire career - if they’re lucky. For Mudvayne , that was just their first 5 years.
- Mudvayne's musical alchemy defies categorisation, seamlessly blending death metal, jazz, fusion, progressive rock, and world music into an audacious mix that completely sets them apart from their peers; so much so that they are unofficially credited with creating the ‘math metal’ genre.
- Coal Chamber were one of the first bands to weave detuned guitars, noisy textures, white knuckle intensity, hardcore punk and hip hop like they were always meant to be.
- Bridging the gap between heavy metal power and industrial groove at an infectious tempo, their self-titled debut delivered the classics, Loco, Sway, Big Truck and Oddity and was included in Kerrang! Magazines’ '21 Greatest Nu-Metal Albums of All Time’. Their influence is undeniable!

Mudvayne & Coal Chamber Announce February 2024 Australian Tour
It’s been a long time coming for fans of both bands, but this February, the waiting finally ends.
Mudvayne & Coal Chamber (Source: Supplied)
Aussie nu-metal music fans, rejoice as one of your longest-awaited heavy music tours is finally heading down under. Today, Mudvayne and Coal Chamber announce a co-headline tour of Australia, landing on our shores in February 2024.
While the latter last visited Australia in March 2012, Mudvayne haven’t performed in Australia since January and February 2006. It’s been a long time coming for fans of both bands, but this February, the waiting finally ends.
The upcoming tour begins on Wednesday, 14 February, at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall before heading to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Friday, 16 February, Melbourne’s Festival Hall on Saturday, 17 February, Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on Monday, 19 February, and ends on Wednesday, 21 February, at Perth’s Metro City.
You can register here for pre-sale tickets to shows in all five cities, with access to pre-sale tickets closing on Tuesday, 12 September, at 9 am AEST. Tickets will also be available via The Phoenix and Teamwrk Touring .
In 2021, Mudvayne reformed after a 12-year hiatus at the Inkcarceration Festival in Mansfield, Ohio. The band has continued touring since their return. While no music has surfaced yet, vocalist Chad Gray hinted that the reunion would see them hit the studio together on an episode of Avenged Sevenfold member Johnny Christ' s podcast Drinks With Johnny.

Mudvayne's last release was 2009's self-titled full-length. In July 2022, they joined Static-X, Rob Zombie and Powerman 5000 on the Freaks On Parade tour.
Mudvayne got their introduction to Australian audiences at the Big Day Out in 2000. A wander over to one of the side stages found you confronted by a band decked out in some pretty serious makeup (although there can be little doubt their guitarist looked a little like Darth Maul or perhaps a ladybird) fronted by a maniacal frontman sporting four foot long blue dreadlocks from his beard.
Coal Chamber are a supremely influential heavy band, managing to blend noisy and detuned guitars (in a good way), hardcore punk and hip-hop. Their most recent album, Rivals , arrived in 2015. You know you’re in for a good time.

MUDVAYNE & COAL CHAMBER: Hordern Pavillion, Sydney 16/02/24

Nu-Metal has always been a widely debated genre of music that has divided the gatekeepers of the metal scene. However, in 2024, the importance of these bands that pioneered one of the last genuinely innovative styles of music is finally gaining the respect it rightfully deserves. After attending the inaugural Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas in 2023, I was able to witness the revival of nu-metal firsthand and it truly highlighted the cultural significance this genre has created. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to reconnect with my youth and see two bands, Mudvayne and Coal Chamber , that played a pivotal part in shaping my social identity as a teenager.
Coal Chamber , who proudly hail from East Los Angeles, were one of the first Nu-Metal bands to gain attention alongside Korn and Limp Bizkit in the mid-to-late 1990s. This 4-piece band is incredibly edgy with an amazing groove, making them a powerhouse when it comes to their sonic layout. They were always going to be the perfect compliment to join Mudvayne on their final tour of Australia. Coal Chamber’s stage set was a testament to their vibrant image. Amp cabinets lined with multi-colored LED lights and a “confused” smiley graphic on all the speaker cabinets glowing under a giant backdrop of their iconic logo, which you will see tattooed on frontman Dez Fafara ‘s right forearm.
They opened with Loco from their 1997 self-titled debut record, and the Horden immediately went into a chaotic meltdown. This song embodies one of the heaviest and most iconic riffs of the Nu-Metal genre. The band’s energy was electric, with vocalist Dez pirouetting across the stage like a frenzied madman. The most important feature that defines Coal Chamber’s sound is the vast eclectic soundscape and riffs from guitarist Miguel “Meegs” Rascon . In many songs, he seemingly utilized combinations of multiple effects pedals that would create sounds others would fear to attempt. The rhythm section of drummer Mikey “Bug” Cox and Nadja Peulen was monstrous, as they were incredibly locked in and did not falter throughout their 15-song set.
Dez is a captivating character, and at times his bravado comes across as arrogant. However, deep down, he is an incredibly passionate and talented vocalist. His passion and love for this country really shone through as he offered a heartfelt speech about letting go of problems in your life and living in the moment, all while letting the power of music heal the soul. It brought a smile to my face, and my respect for this band reached a new apex. Other songs that really stood out included Big Truck, Dark Days , and their set closer Sway , which signed off an amazing experience with the whole crowd singing the iconic lyrics, “ we don’t need no water, let the motherfucker burn, burn motherfucker, burn.”
It has been 18 long years since Mudvayne last visited Australia, and their return has been massively hyped for good reason. I remember seeing them at the 2006 Big Day Out in Sydney and vividly recall how amazing they were as a live band in their prime. So, it’s safe to say that my inner nu-metal child was extremely excited to see a band that had such a profound impact on me 20 years ago. A sea of devoted fans roared incredibly loud as Mudvayne kicked off their set with Not Falling . Ironically, bassist Ryan Martinie attempted to leap onto his riser for the first time and missed, resulting in a hard fall on his back. However, being the legend that he is, he immediately got up and continued with the song while his techs removed the riser from the stage.
Mudvayne’s sound is intense and densely layered, incorporating many complex elements. They always stood out from other nu-metal bands because they were unafraid to experiment and had a slightly progressive flavor that I truly enjoy. Their set was dominated by tracks from their album L.D. 50 , including Internal Primates Forever, -1, and arguably one of their best tracks, Death Blooms , all of which were featured early on in their set. Death Blooms is an introspective song about the battle of succumbing to illness and the inevitability of death, making it relatable to many. The depth of this band is often misunderstood as a gimmick lacking substance, but Mudvayne’s music has always been emotive and incredibly well written, especially when compared to other bands attempting to emulate their style.
The band is one of the best in the genre, with drummer Matthew McDonough providing primal, metronomic grooves. He adds an amazing layer of flair that highlights his complex style of drumming. Bass player Ryan Martinie , who is arguably one of the most underrated bassists in rock and metal, plays with force and technical proficiency that rivals and mirrors greats such as Les Claypool and Stanley Jordan.
Guitarist Greg Tribbett has a mighty guitar tone and has crafted some of the most brutally creative riffs, although he was not as energetic as his bandmates on stage. Touring guitarist Marcus Rafferty completes the rhythm section, providing additional guitar parts and some incredible backing vocals.
Vocalist Chad Gray took to social media to announce that he would give 150% to this tour and leave nothing behind. His tortured and dramatic performance is always captivating, and he showcases amazing variety with his vocals. His stage presence and banter with the crowd are commanding and entertaining. At one point, he taunted the crowd for throwing detritus on stage, encouraging his loyal followers to kick their asses for him. He also discussed how metal music is the fountain of youth and expressed his joy in seeing parents who got into Mudvayne in the early 2000s attending the show with their children, on their shoulders rocking out with mohawks and facepaint.
Their set included many amazing songs from their entire discography, although it seemed slightly shorter than the one in Brisbane a few days prior, with tracks like Silenced and Under My Skin omitted.
Everything appeared to be going well, but fatigue started to take its toll, causing some minor hiccups. Chad’s vocals seemed to falter during Nothing To Gein , and when the band started one of their most commercially successful singles, Happy?, they were not synchronized initially, sounding like they were playing to different cues. However, they managed to lock back in around the second chorus without stopping or starting over, which is commendable.
The set concluded with their most popular track, Dig , and many people in the crowd were pretending to slap bass, imitating the famous “brr brr deng” meme that we all know and love.
Jokes aside, this song encompasses everything that makes an amazing song: great riffs, catchy hooks, and a clear message, all packed into just two and a half minutes. Throughout the evening, Mudvayne delivered a world-class performance, but it’s evident that the intensity of their songs now exceeds the band’s physical ability to replicate them as they did 20 years ago. I deeply admire and respect this band for giving such a heartfelt effort during their final Sydney performance. I know I will definitely miss the opportunity to see Mudvayne tour Australia again, and I’m sure many metal fans in this country feel the same.
With a handful of shows remaining on this tour, I think it is fair to say you will not want to miss this opportunity to say farewell to this incredible band. So, let’s raise our glasses and celebrate the brr brr deng.

Mudvayne Announce 2024 Australian Tour with Coal Chamber
By Music Feeds
Illinois nu metal crew Mudvayne will play a bunch of Australian headline shows in February 2024. They’re bringing along their old pals and nu metal contemporaries Coal Chamber for the five-show excursion, which includes dates in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Details below.
Mudvayne were active from the mid-90s until 2010, during which time they released five studio albums. The quartet of vocalist Chad Gray, guitarist Greg Tribbett, bass player Ryan Martinie and drummer Matthew McDonough reunited in 2021 and have since toured extensively around the US.
Mudvayne – ‘Dig’
Mudvayne last visited Australia in 2006 in support of their third album, Lost and Found . Coal Chamber were here for the 2012 Soundwave tour , appearing on a lineup that also featured Bad Religion, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Marilyn Manson.
In early 2022, Coal Chamber’s original bass player, Rayna Foss, was reported missing . Foss had apparently been missing since September 2021, according to the New Orleans Police Department. However, just days after the story went viral, Foss’ daughter, Kayla Rose, contradicted the reports, confirming her mother was not missing .
In any case, Foss has not been a member of Coal Chamber since 2002. The band’s current lineup features vocalist Dez Fafara, guitarist Miguel Rascón, bass player Nadja Peulen and drummer Mike Cox.

MUDVAYNE Announced Australian tour with Coal Chamber in 2024
24 November 2023 The Rockpit
Mudvayne have sold more than six million albums worldwide with 3 Platinum albums in Australia alone. They were honoured with the first ever MTV2 Award and were heavily featured in the pages of Rolling Stone, Revolver, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, Blender, Maxim, Spin, Guitar World, USA Today, and countless others media outlets where metal bands fear to tread. They were even written into a pivotal episode of The Sopranos!
For most artists, such achievements usually mark the summation of an entire career – if they’re lucky. For Mudvayne, that was just their first 5 years.
The Ill Noise from Illinois unleashed their Lethal Dose in 2000 via their debut album L.D. 50. The jaw dropping video for Dig and mind bending groove of Death Blooms created legions of fans who would remain forever loyal as evidenced by the 2.5 million monthly listeners that continue to immerse themselves in Mudvayne’s soundscape on Spotify. An army of 2.5 million monthly listeners on Mudvayne’s Spotify have amassed an astonishing 171 million plays for Happy? from 2005’s Lost and Found , a testament to the enduring power of their music.
Mudvayne’s musical alchemy defies categorisation, seamlessly blending death metal, jazz, fusion, progressive rock, and world music into an audacious mix that completely sets them apart from their peers; so much so that they are unofficially credited with creating the ‘math metal’ genre.
Coal Chamber were one of the first bands to weave detuned guitars, noisy textures, white knuckle intensity, hardcore punk, and hip hop like they were always meant to be. Bridging the gap between heavy metal power and industrial groove at an infectious tempo, their self titled debut delivered the classics, Loco, Sway, Big Truck , and Oddity and was included in Kerrang! Magazines’ ‘Greatest Nu-Metal Albums of All Time’. Their influence is undeniable.
Chamber Music and Dark Days followed respectively with the band dominating every festival and stage they appeared on, before 2015’s Rivals which did not so much press the reset button on their career as much as smashed the thing with a hammer.
After an absence of well over a decade, Mudvayne and Coal Chamber have joined forces for an EPIC Australian tour in February.

Mudvayne + Coal Chamber – Australian Tour February 2024
Magazines’ ‘ Greatest Nu-Metal Albums of All Time ’.

I have never seen Mudvayne before and I wish of could of when they were still together. I ❤️ Chad Gray and I know I ❤️ him in Hellyeah and I was glad I got to see Hellyeah for the first time this year back on May 13 at Rockfest in CB and they were amazing.

For some reason, when US band Mudvayne first emerged around the turn of the millennium they were lumped in with the nu metal crowd. Well, I know the reason: because they wore makeup and costumes not a million miles away from bands like Slipknot and Mushroomhead. However, this four-piece from Illinois were much more technical and experimental than the rest of the scene, with a sound much closer to math metal.
Regrettably, probably due to sales, Mudvayne have tended to focus on touring America rather than crossing the pond to Europe. But when they have come over, they have been electric. Particularly during the early part of their career, around the release of the first and second albums L.D. 50 (2000) and The End Of All Things To Come (2002), their shows were adrenaline-fuelled and frantic, with the four members often in makeup and costumes (the best shows were when they’d play in ‘roadkill’, blood-splattered animal outfits).
Songs like ‘Dig’ and ‘Not Falling’ have become alt-metal anthems and nothing beats hearing Chad Gray’s distinctive scream live, but their more melodic side is often overlooked – Gray has a great melodic voice and prog ballads like ‘World So Cold’ hit hardest in the live arena.
Their later career has seen them tone down the mathy aggression in favour of a more straightforward rock approach, and they seem to be on something of a hiatus while Gray focuses on his sideproject Hellyeah, but here’s hoping they reunite - and reunite with some renewed venom - as soon as possible.

CHAD GRAY On New MUDVAYNE Music: 'You Can Tell It's Special'
In a recent interview with Kris Peters of Australia's Heavy , MUDVAYNE frontman Chad Gray spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for their next studio release. The reunited metallers haven't put out any new material since 2009, which means we're coming up on nearly a decade and a half without a single fresh MUDVAYNE song.
"We've started putting some new stuff together a little bit and people that have heard [some of the early demo] stuff are really excited about it," Chad said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ). "Only the people that are closest to us have heard anything, and, like I said, it's really rough; it's demos. But you can tell it's special. And I think that we have to make sure it's MUDVAYNE . We have to make sure that it's what we want. So we'll just have to see. We were working on it, working on it, working on it a little bit here and there.
"We all live states away from each other — nobody lives even close to each other — so it makes it a little bit difficult," he explained. "But we were able to get some stuff demoed up or whatever, but with us being so far apart, it's a little slow going. And then we just kind of hit a wall. We were, like, 'Okay, we've gotta get back into touring.' So we put everything together and we went back out this summer.
"We'll see what this fall brings," Gray added. "We all just got home [at the end of August], so we're still kind of decompressing. I'm feeling pretty good now. We just put everything on hold and we just wanted to focus on touring. But now that we're done with it, as everybody starts raising their head out of the sand, hopefully we can get together and do something. I don't know — maybe we'll have something new by the time we come down there [to Australia in February 2024] and see you. We'll see."
This past August, Chad told The Oakland Press that he and his MUDVAYNE bandmates had "four [songs] in the pipe. I've written each one of them probably three different times, 'cause it's like nothing's good enough," he revealed. "We're gonna keep pushing. We're all getting along really good. We're all talking. Hopefully we all want the same thing from our music, so we'll see. It's definitely the thing that makes the most sense to do now."
MUDVAYNE kicked off its first headlining tour in over 14 years, "The Psychotherapy Sessions" , in July. Support on the 26-city trek, which was produced by Live Nation , came from COAL CHAMBER , along with GWAR , NONPOINT and BUTCHER BABIES .
Previously, MUDVAYNE made waves in 2022 when they embarked on the "Freaks On Parade" tour co-headlined with ROB ZOMBIE . This 2023 tour, however, marked MUDVAYNE 's first headlining endeavor since 2009.
Gray told The Oakland Press that his "main motivation for putting [ MUDVAYNE ] back together and coming back was our fans", including those who discovered the band during its absence. "There's so many younger kids that are coming up and coming into our world, the metal world, and they're learning about MUDVAYNE ," he said. "So you have this, like, the ground's kind of rumbling and it goes out and touches more and more people, but we weren't out there to scratch that itch. You still have your actual fan base but you're accumulating new people. So when we came back it was very exciting for us. It was about our fans and giving those new fans the experience."
MUDVAYNE formed in 1996 and has sold over six million records worldwide, earning gold certification for three albums ( "L.D. 50" , "The End Of All Things To Come" , "Lost And Found" ). The band is known for its sonic experimentation, innovative album art, face and body paint, masks and uniforms. MUDVAYNE is Gray , Greg Tribbett (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew McDonough (drums, synthesizer) and Ryan Martinie (bass).
Gray spent 17 years fronting HELLYEAH , which released its sixth studio album, "Welcome Home" , in September 2019 via Eleven Seven Music . The disc marked the group's final effort with drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott , who passed away more than five years ago.
MUDVAYNE did not tour behind its fifth album, which was barely promoted and sold weakly upon release.
