Getting around Mallorca – by car or not?

Do you need a car in mallorca.

  • No, if you mostly want to stay at a resort and go to the beach
  • No, if you are staying in Palma de Mallorca for just a weekend
  • Yes, if you you want to enjoy the variety of sceneries Mallorca has to offer: coves, beaches, castles, mountains, cliffs…
  • Yes, if you want to have the freedom to adapt your program to the weather or avoid the crowded times (e.g. Formentor during the day!)
  • Yes, if you want to enjoy the gems off the beaten path

Overall, I think  renting a car is the best way to explore the island and see all the best things to do, plus off the beaten path locations. It will allow you to see the  best landscapes Mallorca offers.

Is driving in Mallorca safe? Is it easy?

To be honest, Mallorca is not my favorite destination for driving. It is not dramatically difficult, but it is not the most comfortable experience.

Here is my analysis of the situation:

On the positive side:

  • Roads are overall in correct conditions,
  • The island is not huge, you never drive for too long
  • There is a fast road crossing the island East to West, which makes exploring easier

On the negative side:

  • When you leave the main roads, there are many very narrow roads
  • It is very crowded with lots of tourists (who don’t know the size of their rental cars)
  • Some mountain roads have a steep drop and not much protection

Driving in the Tramuntana Mountains

Getting around Mallorca without a car

It is possible to get around Mallorca without a car, to see the major sights:

  • Bus –  There is a network of public transportation – Especially if you are staying in Palma de Mallorca
  • Organized tours –  If you are staying in Palma or one of the main resort towns, you can find a variety of guided tours to enjoy the main sights or do fun activities – see options
  • Taxis –  You can take a taxi to specific locations but it will get very expensive

Driving times

Below is a map of the driving times you can expect around Mallorca.

Map Mallorca driving times

#1 to 6 – Mallorca Driving Rules (Spain)

Let’s start with general rules and regulations you should be aware of:

#1 – License requirement / Age –  Do I need an international driver’s permit?

To drive in Mallorca / Spain you need a valid driving licence from your country.

  • People with EU licenses can drive on their holidays with only their valid national licenses
  • All other nationalities must have an International Driving Permit (on top of their national license)

You must be 18 years of age (but know that many rental companies may have other age requirements).

It is also mandatory to always have the vehicle registration documents as well as a valid ID, such as your passport, with you.

Driving license international driving permit

#2 –  Side of the road

Driving is on the right side of the road. It is very important to remember it on one lane roads when you have to give way!

#3 –  General behavior rules

  • Seatbelts are mandatory for all
  • No cell phone while driving
  • Kids under 12 cannot seat in the front of the car
  • Do not wear flip-flops to drive
  • Overtaking can only be done on the left side

#4 – Alcohol and driving

The legal alcohol limit here is 0.05%. Driving under the influence is considered a serious offence. I always recommend not drinking at all if you are driving.

Stopping in Mallorca

#5 – Mandatory equipment to have in your car

In Spain, the following pieces of equipment must be available in the car:

  • 2 Warning triangles
  • Reflective vest or jacket
  • Spare wheel and tools to change it
  • First aid kit (advised, not mandatory)
  • Flashlight (advised, not mandatory)
  • Children under 18kg (39.7 pounds) in weight must be in child seats
  • Children under 135cm (4.4ft) tall should be in the rear seats on a booster.

#6 – Mandatory insurance in Spain / Mallorca

The only mandatory insurance in Spain is: unlimited third-party liability insurance – it is automatically included in the price of all car rentals. If you are visiting with your own car, don’t forget to bring proof of insurance.

Compare car rental prices in Mallorca

#7 to 12 – Roads conditions and Road Signs in Mallorca

#7 – conditions of fast roads and secondary roads.

  • The motorways and fast roads are in good conditions
  • Lanes are clearly marked
  • Drive on the right lane, unless overtaking
  • Overtaking is always on the left side
  • There are some tunnels – nothing scary, they are wide and well lit

Fast road in Mallorca

#8 – Driving in the mountains

  • In the North and North West of Mallorca, there are mountains: The Tramuntana mountains.
  • The main road through them (West to East) is Ma-10 is easy enough with one lane in each direction and good protection
  • However, side roads to beaches, villages or hidden gems are often narrow, winding and less protected. Make sure to drive slowly
  • In my eBook , I share with you if one access road is scary, so that you can make a decision to go or not.

Mountain road in Mallorca

#9 – Narrow access to attractions

Even outside the mountains, there are side roads to beaches or shortcuts through farmlands which are on very narrow roads. Always look far ahead to plan on how to cross path with other cars. Plus, don’t forget that you can close your outside mirrors to make it easier!

Narrow road to beach in Mallorca

#9 – Driving in towns & villages

There is a wide variety of situations in towns and villages. However all towns have an old center. Most streets in those centers are narrow as well!

Plus, know that Mallorca loves speed bumps.

Driving in village in Mallorca

#10 – Speed limit & signs

  • Speed limits are indicated on circular signs with red border and a number
  • Speed limits are in kilometers per hour

Speed limit sign in Mallorca

#11 – Other road signs in Mallorca

The road signs are classic in Latin letters, nothing specific to know. There are plenty of signs to indicate directions.

Points of interest are indicated on brown signs.

road signs in Mallorca

#12 – Tolls in Mallorca

There are not roads, tunnel or bridge with a toll. The Soller tunnel (often listed by articles) does not have a toll anymore.

I don’t drink coffee

#13 to 15 – How to drive safely

#13 – know the potential dangers.

Apart from you driving too fast, the main dangers on the Mallorca roads are:

  • The cyclists Mallorca is a dream cycling destination. And they love the mountain roads. Therefore you will have to overtake many of them, but you don’t always have to visibility… So you will need a lot of patience to avoid taking risks.

Cyclists in Mallorca

  • The animals In the mountains and the countryside, you can have animals appearing on the side or on roads. Pay attention!

animals in Mallorca

  • Pouring rain Mallorca is a great destination with beautiful weather. But it can still rain. And often, it can rain for a short time but very heavily. In those case, the water has difficulty draining and create “swimming-pools”. Stop if you can when it rains. And be extra careful after the rain.

Rain in Mallorca

#14 – Specific driving tips

Some specifics to Mallorca driving are:

  • In old villages, there can be narrow sharp turn. But look up, there are often mirrors to help you see.
  • Don’t plan too much in one day – between the cyclist, the narrow roads and the many tourists, driving around and finding parking will take some time.

Mirror on Mallorca street

#15 – What to do in case of accident

In case there are people hurt or there is a conflict, the emergency number in Mallorca is  112 . The best order of actions is:

  • contact emergency services
  • contact the police
  • contact your rental provider

Beautiful road in mallorca

#16 to 17 – Parking in Mallorca

#16 – parking in towns.

  • In Palma de Mallorca you can find street parking and underground carparks – I recommend heading directly to one of those carparks to save time
  • In most touristic towns and villages, you have to pay for parking. Don’t forget to display your ticket.
  • Areas where you have to pay are indicated with blue lines
  • In other towns you can find free parking
  • Be very respectful of not no parking signs if you want to keep your car

Parking in towns

#17 – Parking at beaches, old villages, attractions

Many attractions have carparks requiring payments.

  • Iconic villages have timed-fees with display tickets
  • Beaches have entry booth where you pay one fee for the day – cash only

However, off the beaten paths, you can find attractions with free carparks, especially in the center of the island.

I would say that half of the locations I visited had free parking.

Note: for the villages, there are often few places to park. Visit early!

Where to stay in Mallorca?

My favorites:

  • Choice of restaurants + main town:  see best-rated options in Palma
  • Beach + practical location to explore:  see best-rated options in Port d’Alcudia
  • Party area –  see best-rated options in S’Arenal
  • Quiet in the mountains –  see best-rated options in Valldemossa
  • Quiet, charming seaside place –  see best-rated options in Canyamel
  • Access to the best calas –  see best-rated options in Cala d’or
  • Families –  see best-rated options in Cala Millor  or in  Colonia Sant Jordi

my travel car palma

#17 to 18 – Gas station

#17 – fuels and their names.

  • Petrol station in Spanish is  “estación de servicio”
  • Petrol is on green pump – called “gasolina” and if unleaded “gasolina sin plomo”
  • Diesel is on Black pump called “gasoil”
  • See the concentration of electric car charging station, where you are going in Mallorca  on this website

#18 – Management of gas station – refueling

  • Prices are by the liter
  • There are stations roughly everywhere, so don’t worry
  • Many stations have gas station attendants
  • During night time you may have to prepay before being able to fill up

gas stations in Mallorca

#19 – Most beautiful roads in Mallorca

If you want to drive on the most beautiful roads in Mallorca, don’t miss:

  • Ma-10, the road all the way through the Tramuntana mountains
  • Ma-2210, the road along the Formentor Peninsula – see more

#20 to 24 – Renting a car in Mallorca

Below is a snapshot with the main things to know. You can learn more on my article about renting a car in Mallorca .

#20 – Type of car to rent

  • Transmission Most cars in Mallorca have manual transmission. You will pay more for automatic and they are fewer options.
  • Size My main recommendation is to not pick a large car. There are many narrow roads where you can have to cross path with other cars and with bus. Driving a narrow car is less stressful
  • Power All cars will be able to drive all around the island. There are not very steep roads. However, It will be more comfortable in the mountains, if you don’t choose the smallest engine.
  • No need for a 4WD

Narrow crossing Mallorca

#21 – Where to rent

Cars can be rented for all major beach towns and from the airport. If you want to see only a couple of things, you could rent only for a few days from the place where you are staying. However, to be able to explore the entire island and see all its magnificent landscapes, the best option is the airport. You can find all the main rental companies.

The main car rental hubs in Mallorca are:

  • Mallorca airport – see car rental deals
  • Palma beach area – see car rental deals

Flying over Mallorca

#22 – Best rental car company

When reading reviews, don’t forget that on Tripadvisor or Google for example, anyone can write a review even if they have not used the company.

On the platform  Discovercars.com , each rental company has a mark on 10 points. This is an average of the marks given by actual customers. Some of the best rated rental car companies in Mallorca are:

I have personally used Centauro. There have a lesser rating, probably because you have to use a shuttle to reach the cars. However, it went smoothly

Compare car rental prices

#23 – General tips for worry-free experience

  • There is nothing special about renting a car in Mallorca – no specific scam or rules
  • As everywhere, I recommend a thorough examination of the car before taking it (and take pictures) – and don’t fall for extra insurance hard sell
  • Book early to get the best prices and the choice of cars

#24 – Changing island

Most of the companies do not allow you to change island with your car. And you will be in big trouble if you do go and have a technical issue or accident. So best to do a comparison:

  • Cost of ferry for the entire party + car with company that allows it
  • Versus – Cost of ferry seat without car for the entire party + rental

Ferry prices available here

If renting with  Discovercars.com , once you selected a car you can click on “Rental conditions” and then again “Rental conditions” or “Additional conditions” to find the “geographical restrictions”. If it is not documented, you can add the question to customer support.

Driving in and around Palma de Mallorca

my travel car palma

With a rental car in Palma de Mallorca, you’ll have the freedom and comfort to explore the island to the full. Whether you’re planning to take on a hiking trail in the volcanic mountains, visit an unspoiled village, wander through a rainforest, or simply enjoy the magical beaches, Mallorca has it all and more.

As with the rest of Spain, you’ll be driving on the right-hand side in Palma. Speed limits vary from 74mph (120km/h) on autopista (highways), 62mph (100km/h) on autovia (divided highways), 55mph (90km/h) on main roads, and 31mph (50km/h) in towns.

Our rental desk is on the ground floor of La Palma Airport, just after the baggage claim. Keys in hand, you’re just a 20-minute drive from the island’s capital, taking the Autopista de Llevant/Ma-19 route.

If you’re going directly to Palma, there’s a huge parking lot in the center but most hotels offer guest parking, so you’ll likely have no problem leaving your car if you’re heading to the beach for the day. Just be sure to check with the hotel first, though. When you're parking in Palma, look out for pay-and-display signs in the blue zones – those marked with red and yellow lines are for residents only. If you’re driving during peak travel times, allow more time for your journey.

If you want to head further afield, the lively town of Magaluf is around a 30-minute drive from the airport – along the Ma-20 and Ma-1. Here you’ll find a wealth of bars and restaurants as well as waterparks to enjoy.

A quick guide to Palma de Mallorca

my travel car palma

Palma has so much to offer visitors beyond its beaches. With its rich architectural heritage and charming tapas restaurants, the island’s capital is full of beautiful surprises.

Geographically, Mallorca has two distinct sections, dominated by the mountain ranges of Serra de Tramuntana in the west, and the Serra de Llevant to the east.

Most visitors who arrive in Palma de Mallorca will look to spend their time along the island’s coastline. It’s a fun-loving place once the sun sets, with sea-facing restaurants and vibrant cafes and bars.

Culture and attractions

Palma's architecture reflects its international history, so the center is a fantastic place to start your vacation. The capital’s most famous building is its Gothic cathedral, La Seu – a stunning structure which stands in the heart of the city.

Designed by famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, it’s a different breed to other cathedrals across the globe. Be sure to crane your neck to the sky to take in the incredible main façade.

Close by is the 13 th -century L'Almudaina palace with its pristine gardens. While it was converted into a more Gothic style under Jaume II, you can still see some of its original Islamic architecture. For the most beautiful view of the courtyard, be sure to visit during the afternoon when the sun begins to sink in the sky.

Another must-see in Mallorca is the Plaça Cort. Here, you’ll find the city’s town hall and a magnificent olive tree, which is said to be around 800 years old. Look around the trunk of this giant tree to spot the faces hidden in the bark.

Palma is sometimes called a mini-Barcelona, and there is certainly a modernist flavor to the city’s architecture. The Gaudi influence began when he oversaw the restoration works of the town’s Gothic cathedral and Fundacio La Caixa, Palma’s signature modernist building, which is now a thriving art gallery.

Mallorca beaches

There are an array of beaches to enjoy in Mallorca and, with 340 miles of coastline, it’s a case of choosing what type of beach you prefer. A favorite among the locals is Portixol, which is about two miles east of Palma town center and easily accessible by car.

This charming corner of the island is popular lunch spot for locals and visitors alike, a relaxing spot away from the bustle of the capital. Close to the island’s airport, you’ll find Playa de Palma, a beach resort popular with party goers and kite surfers during the summer months. It’s about seven miles east of Palma and easy to find.

In the neighboring towns of Cala Major and Illetas, you’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches on the south-west coast of Mallorca. Parking is limited here, so you may have to leave early to guarantee a space close to the beach.

Road trips in Mallorca

The area of Cala D’or is around an hour’s drive from Palma city. Filled with enchanting coves and a selection of wonderful beaches, this is the perfect place for a day away.

Driving is the fastest way to explore the island, and Palma de Mallorca is the gateway to the region. When you collect your keys from us, you’ll only be minutes away from sunny beaches, volcanoes, and architectural wonders.

Cheap car rentals in Mallorca

Top tips for renting a car in mallorca.

  • Driving in Mallorca has its own unique challenges and things drivers need to know about before they head out on the road.  When you are in a major population center such as Palma, you will generally find good road conditions, but as you get into more outlying areas, you may find road conditions deteriorate plus, there are plenty of mountainous roads that can be quite winding and narrow. One other important thing to remember when driving in this very scenic and beautiful part of the world is that you cannot wear flip-flops when you drive.
  • Driving in Mallorca with kids is much the same as it is in other European countries. Children under 15 months old need to travel in a rear-facing car seat, and children up to the age of four need to travel in a forward-facing car seat. Any child up to six years old needs to travel in a booster seat, and then up to 12 years old needs to travel on a booster cushion. You can put your kids in the front seat in an appropriate child restraint system so long as the airbag in front of them gets deactivated.
  • If you plan on trying to drive your rental in another country, the first thing you will need to do is make sure that it is OK with your rental company to take the vehicle on a ferry to get to mainland Spain. Once you do that, most major rental car companies will allow you to drive your car throughout a number of European countries, but chances are, it is going to be much easier for you to travel to those countries and then rent another car.
  • One of the nicest features of driving a rental car in Mallorca is that you are going to find plenty of gas stations throughout the island and not just confined to the large city of Palma. This makes it quite easy to take trips on the island without having to worry about not finding a place to fill up your tank during your trip. One other tip is that there is a major road that travels from east to west that offers you the ability to travel at higher speeds than smaller two-lane roads making it easy to get across the island quickly.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Mallorca for $23 or less

Should I rent a car in Mallorca?

The decision on whether or not to rent a car often comes down to your plans while you are in Mallorca. If you only plan on staying in one location, like a great beach, you most likely don't have a need for a rental car. If, however, you plan on doing extensive traveling throughout the island, having a rental car is a great option because it allows you to get to a number of destinations on your own schedule rather than having to use very expensive taxis or waiting for public transportation options.

What is it like driving in Mallorca?

In Mallorca, drivers drive on the right side of the road, and because there are quite a few narrow roads here, it is always a great idea to get a smaller car if possible. Locals here can't get a little bit impatient when driving, so don't be surprised by drivers overtaking you. Because this is a smaller island, it is never going to take long to get from place to place but be aware that when you leave the main roads, you're going to encounter very narrow roads some of which are not paved. On some of the more mountainous roads, you may find very little protection at the side of the road and very steep dropoffs.

How old do you have to be to rent a car in Mallorca?

Most of the major rental car companies here will expect you to be at least 21 years old to rent a car. That said, drivers that are less than 25 years old generally will have limits on the type of car they can rent and may not be able to rent things like luxury vehicles or premium vans. It is also quite often the case that drivers less than 25 years old wool incur an additional fee for their rental.

Travel Information

Why rent a car in mallorca.

One of Europe’s most popular beach destinations, the largest of the Balearic Islands has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the continent for decades. In addition to the sun, sea, waves, and all-inclusive resorts, the island also boasts fascinating local culture, interesting museums dedicated to some of its world-famous past inhabitants, and even some surprisingly dramatic mountains.

Mallorca

Top ways to enter Mallorca

  • Palma Airport: Third busiest in Spain and number one in the Balearic Islands, Palma Airport host flights to and from countless destinations in Europe and is especially active during summers.
  • By sea: It’s also possible to get to Mallorca by ferry from the mainland, specifically from the port of Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, or Denia, or from the islands of Ibiza or Menorca.  You can then pick up a ride once you’ve arrived. You can get a rental car at Calvia Adriano Port or the town of Capdepera.
  • Most local speak both Spanish and Mallorquin, the island’s own dialect that’s related to Catalan. English, French, German, and other languages are also well-known by many.
  • Distinctly Mediterranean, Mallorca is warm during winters and hot in summers. Temperatures in July and August can reach 35 °C (95 °F).
  • While Palma de Mallorca is the largest city and attracts the most visitors, it is not the whole of Mallorca. The island is actually made up of 53 municipalities. Driving across the whole island from east to west (or vice versa) can take up to two hours.

Top destinations and activities

  • Beaches of Mallorca . Quite obviously, the biggest tourist draw of Mallorca is the island’s beautiful coastline. In addition to swimming in the Mediterranean and soaking up the sun, there are great opportunities for doing water sports, spas, shoreline restaurants, and everything in between.  In the north, don't miss beaches such as Cala Varques, Cala Mesquida or Formentor. In the southwest, you can't miss Cala Mondragó, Calo des Moro, Cala Figuera or Cala Llombards, which are considered authentic paradises. In the south, the marvelous beaches of Es Trenc in Calvia are more famous. See this Spanish-language guide for more about the beaches of Mallorca .
  • Castell de Bellver. The beautiful castle is built on a hill and offers great views of the island and the sea below. Inside, you can see classical sculptures and archaeological artifacts. he 14th-century circular castle, which is almost unique in the world, is just to the west of the city center of Palma.
  • Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. There are always interesting new exhibitions, but the main attraction of this famous museum is the permanent collection which includes the artworks of Miró, Picasso, and Dalí. Visit the museum’s official website to learn more about opening hours and admission.
  • Palma Cathedral . It is the true jewel of the island and its most emblematic monument. It is a 14th-century cathedral in the Levantine Gothic style. It is close to the port, and for instagramers, it will be a must — its impressive silhouette reflected in the water of the "Parc el Mar" is one of the most photographed images of the island.

Traffic and parking

  • Speed limits - 20 km/h on roads with a single carriageway and pavement platform, 30 km/h on roads with a single lane in each direction of traffic, 50 km/h (31mph) on roads with two or more lanes in each direction or in built-up areas, 90km/h (56mph) on most standard roads, 100km/h (62mph) on standard roads that are either one-way roads, roads with more than two lanes for at least one direction of traffic and roads with shoulders more than 1.5m wide, and 120km/h (74mph) on motorways (called autovías in Spain).
  • The car documentation and insurance always has to be inside a vehicle.
  • The driver and all passengers are required to wear seatbelts.
  • Children up to the age of 12 and measuring less than 135cm travelling on the front seat of a car must be seated in a child restraint system adapted to their size and weight.
  • Unnecessary use of audible warning devices (horns) is prohibited.
  • The legal alcohol limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.02% for novice drivers.
  • The emergency number is 112.

There is just one toll road in Mallorca, MA-11, that starts at Palma and goes north to the town of Sóller. You can also take the old MA110 that is free of charge and offers a more scenic route, but takes about 30 minutes longer to travel.

There are many toll roads in mainland Spain, called ‘carretera de peaje’ and Autopistas. On maps and road signs, all toll roads have to include a letter P after the road type. The payment method may vary depending on the road, but most will accept cash. Regardless of the region, the average estimated price is €9.5 ($11.25) per 100km by car. See the  official website for prices and more information.

Ideas for day trips

  • Dragon Caves. Called Coves del Drach in the local dialect, the four caves are approximately 4km long and lead to the underground Martel Lake. This popular tourist attraction is on the east coast of Mallorca, about an hour’s drive from Palma. Inside, it is possible to take a boat ride while listening to a spectacular classical music concert on Lake Martel (one of the largest underwater lakes in Europe).
  • Serra de Tramuntana. The mountain range along the northwestern coast of the island has many trails and lakes to explore. The highest accessible peak, Puig de Massanella, stands at 1,364 m (4,475 ft) and can be quite a challenge, but the views from the top are worth the effort. There are also some really nice mountain vistas for those who prefer to drive.
  • Calvario Sanctuary . The town of Pollença, located in the north of Mallorca, hides a marvel in the form of a sanctuary at the top of the Calvario mountain. To get there, you must climb the 365 steps that take you up to the top, enjoying spectacular views of Pollença, the bay, and the Sierra de Tramontana.
  • Alcudia. A lovely resort town, Alcudia is the main tourist hub of the relatively less explored north of Mallorca. The area has been inhabited since at least the Roman days, as testified by some remaining ruins, while the main cultural attraction is Alcudia’s well-preserved medieval old town. Meanwhile, some of Alcudia’s best beaches are north and west of the city center.
  • S'Albufera National Park. The large salt marsh near the previously mentioned town of Alcudia is one of the most notable nature preserves in the Balearic Islands. There are more than ten hiking trails in the park -— if you follow them, you’ll be very likely to spot some of the wading bird species that live there. Located on the Bay of Alcudia, the national park is in the northeast of the island and can be reached from Palma in about 50 minutes.

Most popular cars

  • The most popular rental cars in the Balearic Islands are the Ford Fiesta, the Fiat Panda, and the Nissan Qashqai. The most popular car types are economy, mini and compact.
  • The most popular rental car in the Balearic Islands is the Ford Fiesta, but travelers also tend to pick the Fiat Panda and the Nissan Qashqai.

Further destinations

  • Formentera, Ibiza, and Menorca. While not all rental car providers will let you pick up a rental car in Mallorca and then take it to one of the other Balearic Islands, you can take a ferry to each one of them, pick up a rental car there, and find out that, albeit smaller, they are just fascinating to explore.
  • Barcelona: Easily reached by ferry from Mallorca, Barcelona is a world-class destination in terms of culture, entertainment, and cuisine. Home to the Basilica of Sagrada Familia and other Antoni Gaudí architecture, the equally iconic FC Barcelona, historical quarters, and some of the best nightlife in Europe, it never runs out of ways to entertain you. Many rental car companies permit one-way rentals to Barcelona, but you should also find out if the ferry company allows taking the vehicle along (alternatively, you can drop off one car in Mallorca and pick up another one after arriving in Barcelona).
  • Catalonia. As awesome as Barcelona is, the region of Catalonia is so much more than just its largest city. Home to some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches including the wild Costa Brava region, ancient cities like Tarragona, beautiful countryside, and the impressive Catalan Pyrenees, the region is a jewel to explore.
  • Valencian Community. Another destination that can be reached by ferry, the Valencian region is best known for its capital after which it is named. The third-largest city in Spain, it is home to the impressive City of Arts and Sciences, many festivals, and historic sites. The rest of the region is also a fascinating place, not least for its ancient monasteries, scenic beaches, and protected nature areas.

On The Road in Mallorca: Everything You Need to Know

If you are planning a Mallorca road trip it’s a good idea to do your research before arriving in the Balearic Islands. As much as I like to wing it when I travel, I highly recommend you read all the travel guides you can.

1. Should You Rent a Car in Mallorca?

Renting a car is the best way to explore Mallorca unless you plan to just hang out in Palma. But trust me, there is so much to see in Mallorca, you don’t want to just stay in Palma your whole trip!

When researching rental cars, I have some experience to share that should be helpful. There are many companies that provide car rental services, and they offer different types of vehicles including luxury cars, SUVs, vans, and more.

I highly recommend using Discover Cars ! Discover Cars will compare local car rental companies with international ones so that you get a better deal.

Make sure you read the terms and conditions before signing the agreement !

2. Familiarize Yourself with the Rules of the Road

Make sure you are familiar with Mallorca’s driving rules before heading out on the road.

  • Speed Limit : The speed limit in urban areas is usually 50km/h, and on highways, it can be a maximum speed of up to 90-100km/h. Also, children under 12 years old must travel in the back seat and all passengers must wear their seat belts.
  • Toll Roads : Good news there are no tolls in Mallorca!
  • Flip Flops : It is against the law to drive in flip flops in Mallorca
  • Passing Cars : Passing cars can only be done on the left side of the road.
  • Driving : In Mallorca and mainland Spain, you drive on the right-hand side of the road
  • Emergency Services Line in Spain : Dial 112
  • Legal Alcohol Limit : The legal limit is .05% but it is a serious offense to drive under the influence, so just don’t do it.
  • Cell Phones : Avoid using your phone and other handheld devices while driving as it’s illegal in Mallorca.

3. You Should Plan Ahead

Before you hit the road, plan out your route to avoid getting lost or stuck in traffic. I recommend you use a GPS navigation app such as Google Maps or Waze for navigation assistance.

Driving tips in Mallorca

Upgrade Cell Phone Plan : I ALWAYS recommend you have arranged to have internet service when traveling. Call your cell phone carrier ahead of time to ensure you will be connected. Get a European Sim Card here!

PRO TIP: Use offline maps. Using Google Maps will suck the life out of your data.

4. Be aware of wildlife

Road signs when driving in Mallorca

In Mallorca, you should be wearing of what could come jumping out at you on the road.

Mallorca is home to many wild animals , so keep an eye out for them when you are driving. The most common animals you might see are goats, sheep, cows, and horses.

5. Watch out for cyclists

Driving in Mallorca with Cyclists

Mallorca is a popular destination for cyclists from all over the world! Be sure to be extra cautious when driving, as there are many cyclists on the road.

This is especially true in the mountains!

6. Drive defensively

Driving defensively is always a must, especially in Mallorca! Make sure you pay attention to the other drivers and their behavior on the road.

The locals can be a little aggressive behind the wheel, so drive within Mallorca with a bit of confidence .

7. Avoid Driving at Night

I recommend avoiding driving at night , as it can be more dangerous due to the lack of visibility and increased presence of drunk drivers.

These small roads can be very dark at night. I always was sure to park my car before the sun went down.

Is it Easy to Drive in Mallorca?

I am a very cautious and timid driver, but I found the driving to be manageable.

Driving in the old town was a bit more challenging because the roads are so narrow. But once you hit the open road driving is much easier.

However, some areas may prove difficult for drivers not familiar with the area. Mallorca has many winding mountain roads and narrow streets which require careful attention from drivers.

It is also important to be aware of the local speed limits, as they can vary quite a bit. Additionally, the roads can be harder to drive during peak tourist season when there are more cars on the road.

Driving in Spain Requirements

To legally drive in Mallorca, drivers must abide by the following requirements:

  • Age Requirements : You must be 18 years to drive a car. However, a car rental company typically has higher age limit restrictions. In every case, you must have a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year.
  • You must carry your passport with you at all times.
  • You must carry your rental agreement within the vehicl e.
  • You must have a valid credit card in order to rent a car.
  • If you don’t have an EU driver’s license you will need an international driving permit .

Car Supply Requirements

At all times in Spain, you are required to have the following in your vehicle:

  • Reflective Vest/Jacket
  • Warning Triangles (2)
  • Spare tires and tire-changing equipment

Parking in Mallorca

Parking signs in Mallorca

Parking in Mallorca is relatively easy, however, there are some restrictions in certain areas. You can usually find metered parking spaces near popular attractions, but it’s important to read the signs carefully and follow the instructions.

There are also many private car parks available if you plan on staying longer in one area.

Finding a parking spot in the summer months in Palma could pose to be more of a challenge near the major tourist attractions.

The Most Scenic Drive in Mallorca

If you are looking for a scenic drive in Mallorca, I recommend driving along the coast from Palma to Port de Soller . This route is popular among road-trippers and has stunning views of the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea.

Along the way, you will find quaint towns and villages such as Deia, Valldemossa, and Soller.

Famous Steep Winding Road

Winding roads can be fun to drive in Mallorca. The Sa Calobra   Road  is the most scenic road full of hairpin bends and should be driven with caution.

The roads in Mallorca are in good condition but, still, you need to be careful.

Driving in the Mountains

What I love about Mallorca is that it is an incredibly diverse island . If you’re planning on driving in the mountains in Mallorca, it pays to be prepared. The roads are winding and can be dangerous, so take extra care when driving.

Make sure that you drive at a speed suitable for you, and be extra vigilant about observing the speed limits .

Mountain Roads in Mallorca

In addition to following the rules of the road, it’s important to make sure that you have a good vehicle. You must choose a car that is suitable for driving in mountainous terrain. If you are renting a car, make sure to check with the rental company to ensure that a car is suitable for mountain driving.

When you’re in the mountains, make sure to keep an eye on the weather conditions . Mallorca experiences plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, but there can be sudden storms and rain when you least expect it. If a rainstorm hits it can be quite scary to drive in.

Always check the forecast before heading up the mountain and make sure that you are wearing suitable clothing and have adequate food and water supplies.

Finally, be aware of any wildlife that may be on the road. Mallorca is home to a number of different species of animals, ranging from ibex to wild boar, so keep an eye out for these when driving.

Driving in Palma

Driving in the city of Palma in Mallorca

Palma is the capital of Mallorca and one of the most beautiful cities in Spain . Driving in Palma de Mallorca is for the experienced driver. It can be a little bit tricky due to its narrow streets and busy tourist hotspots. Make sure you pay attention to traffic signs, as there are many one-way streets.

It’s the one-way streets that I found most annoying. The good news is that Palma itself is small enough to walk around. You will just need to find a parking meter and you can explore the small town by foot.

Overall, driving is a great way to explore the island and its beautiful sights. Just remember to be safe and follow the rules of the road!

Hotels with parking for rental cars in Palma

Staying in Palma and renting a car? One of the best tips I have for anyone renting a car in peak season is to understand your parking options at your accommodations.

If your hotel doesn’t have a car parking area, your best option is to contact the hotel ahead of time and have them give you parking information. This way you can arrive prepared and waste time trying to find a parking lot.

Trust me, it’s the last thing you want to deal with after a long day of travel.

Rental Car Pick-Up / Drop Off

If you use Discover Cars, you can pick up your rental car at multiple locations on the island.

Palma de Mallorca Airport

I found picking up the Mallorca rental car was a great deal from the Palma airport . If you are planning on getting a vehicle with an automatic transmission you should consider reserving your car as early as possible.

In European countries rental car companies have a limited supply, and if you are visiting in high season, you don’t want to miss out.

For alternative rental car pick-up locations, search Discover Cars .

Must See Sites On the Road in Mallorca

Here are some of the best places to visit in Mallorca by car:

Serra de Tramuntana

Dr

Planning a Mallorca road trip? Be sure to put driving through the Serra de Tramuntana on your list!

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is an essential part of the Mallorcan landscape and a must-see for any visitor. It offers stunning views, as well as plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and rock climbing.

When driving through Serra de Tramuntana , it’s important to stay alert as the roads can often be quite windy and narrow.

Additionally, take care to watch out for wildlife as they may unexpectedly cross your path.

Finally, always check the forecast before venturing out and make sure you have a full tank of gas so you don’t get stranded in the mountains.

Port de Sóller

my travel car palma

In the northwest of Mallorca , Port de Sóller is a stunning spot to drive to in Mallorca. This small fishing village has been around since the 19th century.

It is a popular destination due to its beautiful views of the Tramuntana Mountain range and its nearby beaches.

It’s an easy drive from Palma and an ideal place to spend a day or two .

When you’re visiting Port de Sóller, make sure you take your time exploring its charming streets, having lunch at one of the many seafood restaurants, or visiting the local markets.

If you’d like to get out on the water, there are plenty of boat tours available for you to choose from.

There are also several hiking trails and bike paths that offer stunning views of the area.

Port de Soller Things To Do

After a long day on the road, you should plan downtime activities. Have a look at this speed boat tour with snorkeling !

Port de Pollença

my travel car palma

The pretty fishing village of Port de Pollença is one of the most popular seaside destinations on Mallorca. You can drive up to this picturesque little town, located at the northern end of the Bay of Pollença.

Here you will find stunning views over its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, rocky coves, and pine forests.

When visiting Port de Pollença, it’s important to remember that parking can be limited in certain areas, so make sure you plan your route accordingly and take advantage of the large public car park near the marina.

Additionally, if you’re planning on driving late at night, ensure you keep a safe distance from other vehicles and always follow the speed limits.

Final Thoughts

If you are visiting the island of Mallorca you really should rent a car . There are many incredible corners of the island you simply can’t see without one! Driving in Mallorca is totally manageable for any experienced driver!

Plan ahead and refer back to this guide whenever you are ready to make the trip!

FAQs Renting a Car & Driving Around Mallorca

Yes! You can feel safe renting a car and driving around Mallorca. It is important to read up on the driving laws in Mallorca. Other than that, you should have no concerns with safety when renting a car.

If you are planning to see the whole island of Mallorca, you will need to rent a car. Public transport can take you to many places on the island. But to see all Mallorca has to offer it is essential to rent a car and drive in Mallorca.

Driving on the highways and country roads in Mallorca is very easy. It will get a bit tricky driving in small cities like Palma where there is more traffic congestion.

Mallorca road trip: The best itineraries for 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 days

The 3 best road trip itineraries to visit mallorca by car.

You’re planning to do a road trip in Mallorca ?

Great idea!

Visiting Mallorca by car is the only way to reach all its stunning beaches and coves . A road trip around Mallorca is the perfect way to make the most of your visits and effortlessly uncover the island’s must-see spots.

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this travel guide with the 3 best road trips itineraries in Mallorca depending on the duration of your stay (4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 days). For each duration, I will give you a summary of the itinerary as well as the link to read the detailed itinerary article.

And at the end of this guide, I will also give you my list of the best accommodations in Mallorca depending on your budget as well as my best tips to enjoy the perfect road trip.

Let’s plan your road trip!

Which airport should you choose to kick off your road trip in Mallorca?

Which port should you choose to start your road trip in mallorca, renting a car for a road trip in mallorca, road trip in mallorca: 4 or 5 days, road trip in mallorca: one-week itinerary, 1) south mallorca (6 days), 2) north mallorca (4 days), best hotels in south mallorca – near palma de mallorca, best hotels in north mallorca – near alcudia, when’s the best time to embark on a mallorca road trip, other activity ideas for a mallorca road trip, you’re traveling to mallorca these articles will help you .

Mallorca boasts just one airport. It’s located in the southern part of the island, a mere 10 km from the historic center of Palma de Mallorca .

Thus, Palma is the ideal starting point for exploring Mallorca by car. That’s why I’ve chosen to commence all of my Mallorca routes from there .

Flight prices to Palma de Mallorca can vary enormously, so it’s a smart idea to start comparing them as early as possible. To do this, you can use our flight comparator, in partnership with Skyscanner . It’s the guarantee of getting the best price .

Instead of flying, you might also opt to take the ferry to Mallorca .

You can sail to Mallorca from other islands in the Balearic archipelago: Menorca , Ibiza, and Formentera .

You can also get to Mallorca by ferry from certain cities on mainland Spain . It’s a bit of a long haul, but if that floats your boat, here are the details you’ll need:

  • Palma is served by ferries coming from Barcelona . Do bear in mind that the crossing takes about 7 hours on average.
  • You can also sail to Palma de Mallorca from Valencia . The crossing takes between 7 and 8 hours, depending on the company.

In addition to the port of Palma, Mallorca also has a second port up north, in Alcudia .

It welcomes boats from Menorca (1h15 journey from Ciutadella or 3h30 journey from Mahon) and Barcelona (a 6-hour crossing).

Another option to reach Mallorca is by sailing from France, specifically from Toulon . Corsica Ferries operates this route, but keep in mind that the journey takes approximately 18 hours.

Planning a road trip without discussing cars would be nonsense! As I mentioned, to truly experience Mallorca, you should definitely get a car. Without it, reaching all the beautiful coves is practically mission impossible.

If you plan on coming to Mallorca with your own vehicle from Toulon or Barcelona, you can skip straight to the next section .

Otherwise, whether you arrive by boat or plane, make sure you rent a car upon arrival , near the port or directly at the airport. If you’ve used this blog for trip planning before, you know I always vouch for Rentalcars.com .

So, to keep things consistent, I suggest you book through them for your Mallorca journey as well. I’ve relied on them for all my trips, whether to Greece , Sicily , Crete or even Thailand .

I find it super handy because with one click, you can compare all the car rental rates in Mallorca (both local and international). You’ll quickly notice car rental options that include unlimited mileage or the option to add a second driver .

Rentalcars also offers its own insurance, cheaper and far more comprehensive than what local rental agencies might suggest. The complete protection insurance from Rentalcars covers the full refund of costs incurred in the event of an accident or theft .

If this option isn’t already included in your credit card insurance, you can add it at the time of your booking.

The site also allows (under certain conditions) for free modifications or cancellations .

Given the high tourist activity on the island during the peak season, you should definitely book your car in advance to have the widest possible choice and get the best rate .

Road Trip in Mallorca: 10 days

For this new adventure, I propose a 10-day road trip to discover Mallorca by car .

This itinerary starts from Palma but if you’re arriving at the port of Alcudia, you can, of course, reverse the stages. This well-rounded itinerary combines sightseeing, beach relaxation, and exciting activities to ensure you experience all the must-visit destinations on the island .

On the agenda for this 10-day road trip in Mallorca:

  • Palma de Mallorca
  • The beaches of the south
  • The coves of the southeast
  • The island of Sa Dragonera
  • The Serra de Tramontana
  • Cap de Formentor
  • Llevant Peninsula Natural Park
  • The northeastern coves

I’ve summarized the main stages of this road trip below, but you can find all the details by clicking on this link: 10-day itinerary in Mallorca .

To begin this 10-day Mallorca road trip , let’s explore the southern region of the island and kick things off with a visit to the vibrant city of Palma de Mallorca .

The historical center isn’t that vast, so a single day is enough to discover the main tourist attractions.

First day – Best things to see in Palma:

  • The old town : the cute alleyways lined with shops and the main squares
  • The cathedral
  • The royal palace

And to wrap up this first day, you should absolutely try this fantastic catamaran excursion with dinner included . All the info and bookings can be found by clicking the button below :

Stay the night in Palma. To plan your stroll around Palma, check out my article: 20 Things to do in Palma de Mallorca .

Palma de Mallorca - Cathedral and Royal Palace

On the second day , continue your 10-day Mallorca road trip by heading to Cap de Ses Salines where, provided you’re willing to walk a bit, you can laze around on the completely wild beaches of El Caragol and Cala En Tugores .

And if you prefer easier-to-access beaches , head to Colonia de Sant Jordi where you can set your towel down on the stunning turquoise water beach of Es Trenc .

In the area, you’ve also got the beaches of Es Dolç, Can Curt, Es Carbo and Ses Roquetes which are really pretty.

Spend a second night in Palma.

For the third day, I suggest a trip to Sineu market and then moving on to Porto Cristo to visit one of the two caves you should see on your road trip around Mallorca:

  • Coves del Drach
  • Coves dels Hams

Those who enjoy a good walk might then choose the hike of the 4 coves ( Cala Bota, Cala Virgili, Cala Pilota and Cala Magraner ).

Others might prefer the relaxation option at one of the coves of Cala D’Or . I recommend, for instance: Cala Esmeralda, Cala Gran, Cala Petita and Calo d’es Pou .

Spend another night in Palma de Mallorca.

Cala d'or Mallorca

Fourth day : head to one of the coves on the southeast of the island for a chill-out day. You can totally check out several coves in just one day .

Among the best-known and prettiest ones in the area, I suggest:

  • Calo de Moro : it’s one of the most popular inlets on the whole island and it truly is a stunning place
  • Cala Llombards : for a more family-friendly beach if you’ve opted for a family road trip around Mallorca

Also, don’t miss out on a visit to the Mondrago Natural Park where you can enjoy 3 more beautiful coves: S’Aramador beach, Cala Mondrago and Calo des Borgit .

Spend another night in Palma.

On the fifth day , I suggest you go and explore the island of Sa Dragonera , that you’ll find in the southwest of Mallorca. You can reach it by boat from Sant Elm, which is a 50-minute drive from Palma.

After Sa Dragonera and on your way back to Palma, you can:

  • Stop by the popular resort town of Magaluf known for its expansive sandy beach.
  • Take a walk around the marina of Portals Nous , to admire the yachts
  • Explore the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation , a remarkable institution dedicated to the painter and sculptor of the same name.
  • Visit the Bellver Castle located on the heights of Palma.

Sa Dragonera

On the sixth day , I’m leaving the choice up to you, with a few different activities to consider :

  • Visiting Palma’s aquarium
  • Spending the day at Aqualand , the largest water park on the island
  • Going on an awesome quad bike excursion!
  • Setting off for an exciting buggy outing or in a sports car .
  • Relaxing on the beach.

Spend a last night in Palma.

On the seventh day of your road trip around Mallorca, it’s time to leave Palma and continue your exploration in the north of the island .

The plan for the day: take the Serra de Tramontana road that goes through the whole island from south to north, making some stops :

  • In the pretty villages with traditional stone houses such as Valldemossa, Deià, Soller and Fornalutx
  • At Sa Calobra to see the Torrent de Pareis , a superb canyon with a cute little beach
  • At the Lluc Monastery , that you can visit if you feel like it
  • In the lovely traditional village of Pollença : it’s one of my favorite spots on this 10-day road trip around Mallorca!

Spend the night in Alcudia.

On the eighth day, I suggest you drive around the Cap de Formentor and make several stops at different viewpoints to admire the scenery . You could also take a dip at Formentor beach or the cove of Cala Figuera .

Next, head to the old town of Alcudia where you can take a walk around the city walls .

Finish the day on Muro beach, which stretches along the bay of Alcudia for several kilometers.

Spend another night in Alcudia.

Cap de Formentor - Mallorca

On the ninth and penultimate day of your 10-day tour of Mallorca , put on your hiking boots and hit one of the 13 trails of the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park .

In the afternoon, head to the most beautiful beaches in the north-east. You’ll be spoiled for choice between:

  • Cala Agulla

Spend your last night in Alcudia.

On the tenth and final day , it’s time to wrap up this amazing road trip around Mallorca!

Cala Torta Mallorca

To hit the road in Mallorca, I highly recommend the months of May – June – July – August – September, and early October .

This is when you can max out on all the island’s attractions under a glorious sun: the beaches and coves, hiking trails, boat tours and the breathtaking natural landscapes.

About July and August, I’m sure I’m not telling you anything new by saying these two months coincide with the island’s peak tourist season . It’s therefore absolutely essential to book your hotels, car rental, and activities in advance , if you’ve decided to do your road trip in Mallorca in summer .

The best time to tour Mallorca by car is in September.

The weather is still warm and sunny , and with summer holidays winding down , you can expect fewer crowds . Indeed, September is hands down the best month to explore Mallorca on a road trip !

Please note, from late October until Easter holidays , many restaurants and hotels close . Most activities, including boat outings, don’t run, and the water’s too chilly for swimming.

So, a winter road trip in Mallorca isn’t really advisable.

If you’re looking to add more activities to your Mallorca road trip , I’ve selected a few that are really worth your time.

You need to click on the orange links below to check the details and make your reservations:

Road Trip Itinerary: A Week in Mallorca Itinerary

Have you been to Mallorca? If you haven’t get that flight booked, as you need to start planning your Mallorca Itinerary NOW!

I spent most of my time during the week based in our villa close to Alcudia and Pollenca, but having a car meant we could explore this amazing island further.

After a long journey, it’s worth simply unpacking your suitcases and opening a glass of wine. Depending on what time you arrive you could have a dip in the pool, head for lunch or nip to the local supermarket.

How to get to Mallorca

If you are flying into Mallorca you will arrive at Palma airport, also known as Son Sant Joan Airport. The airport is situated 8 kilometres east of Palma so it’s easy to get from Mallorca airport to Palma. It’s a large international airport which has hundreds of flights a day from countries all across Europe.

And did you know, you can also arrive by boat! You can get a ferry from Barcelona and Valencia, and it takes around 8 hours. Or you can take the Trasmediterranea car ferry between the Balearics and Spanish mainland, which takes 3 hours from Valencia to Palma and 2 hours from Ibiza to Palma.

When to go to Mallorca

I would recommend that the best time to visit Mallorca is in the months between the busy summer period. I travelled to Mallorca in June and I found this a great time to visit. The best time to visit is April–May and September–October, as you avoid the crowds, but get the warmer weather.

Weather in Mallorca

The Mediterranean climate means the island is hot and sunny most of the year, but it can rain during the months of September to November.

  • Weather in Mallorca in January  Min. temperature: 8º C | Max. temperature: 15º C

Mallorca Itinerary

Day one – one week in mallorca itinerary.

The best way to start your Mallorca itinerary is in the capital Palma. Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca and is most famous for the massive Santa María cathedral, a Gothic landmark begun in the 13th century, which overlooks the Bay of Palma.

Also worth a visit is seeing the adjacent Almudaina is a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence. Then if you have more time, head to the west of the city, to the hilltop Bellver Castle, a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape which offers some amazing views.

After lunch head to the wonderful town of Sant Elm, on the south-west coast of Majorca in the Balearic Islands of Spain. It lies in the municipality of Andratx. It is a picturesque fishing village at the far Southwest corner of Majorca, only a short drive from Andratx and Port D’Andratx. Although a sleepy village, with a variety of apartments and villas, there are also several restaurants of excellent quality.

Day Two  – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

Sunday market in pollenca.

The old town in Pollenca has a great Sunday market from 10am to 2pm every week. It winds itself through the streets of the old town across the market places and up to the square at the bottom of the 365 Calvari Steps.

The market has 300 stalls where we can find food, crafts, shoes, clothes, plants. It takes place between the Plaça Major (main square) and Ca Les Monnares Square and surroundings; nowadays, in addition to these, you can also find all kinds of typical products from the island of Majorca, such as fresh produce.

After a long walk through the streets, you can take a short walk up to the top of the hill where a monastery called the Calvari church has sit for hundreds of years. There are some great views from up here, including views of Puig de Maria, so it is well worth the walk, and also you will burn off all the calories you ate and drank last night.

Afternoon in Alcudia and Port de Alcudia

After lunch on the second-day head over to Alcudia for an afternoon of exploring everything Alcudia has to offer. There are lots of boutique shops, cafes and souvenir shops so you can shop to your heart’s content. There is also a market every Tuesday and Sunday.

And one the sun starts to dim head down to the port for dinner by the sea. Port d’Alcudia, neighbours the town of Alcúdia and has many hotels and tourist venues located within the town. Port d’Alcudia has a large beach which links up to nearby Muro Beach and it is lovely to spend an evening here.

I would recommend eating at AQUA at the far end of the port is a beautiful restaurant with an array of dishes on the menu ranging from seafood to steak. You can sit right on the water edge as you enjoy dinner with a lovely glass of wine!

Day Three – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

A day out at cala san vicente.

If you want to explore the quieter areas of Mallorca, Cala San Vincente is the perfect day out. It is an un-spoilt Majorcan fishing port and one of the least touristy places on the island. There are only a few hotels and private holiday apartments meaning you can explore the little town at ease.

Cala Sant Vicenç is a small resort town in north-eastern Majorca, Spain. It consists of three small beaches, plus a few bars and restaurants catering to tourists. Located at one end of the town is the hypogeum of Cala Sant Vicenç, perhaps the most spectacular hypogeum on Mallorca.

It’s set on the northern tip of the island, built into the rocky coastline at the edge of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range with beautiful views across the ocean. There are also three wonderful beaches here so remember to bring the bucket and space!

Then in the afternoon head to the prehistoric man-made caves. The caves are the remnants of a much larger burial complex that was gradually destroyed over the years, with the most dramatic destruction occurring since the beginning of the 20th century. Today there are just 7 caves remaining and only a few in good condition.

Day Four – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

Morning at cap de formentor.

Cap de Formentor is a spectacular place, located on the northernmost point of the Balaeric Island Mallorca in Spain and the headland has quite a few lookout points with spectacular views of the coast and beyond. Its highest point, Fumart, is 384m above sea level and the only way in is along the so-called ‘snake road’ from Port De Pollença to Cap de Formentor.

It’s a great spot to watch the sunset in the evenings so grab a few beers and some friends and head over to this unique spot in Mallorca for one of the best sunsets I have ever seen!

After this, you can head to the viewpoint of Cap Formentor. Only six kilometres from Port de Pollenca at the Mirador des Colomer. It’s a fairly easy hike to the top, up a few steps for views across to the rocky island. The path opposite the steps leads to an old watchtower from which you can see the whole of the peninsula, as well as the bays of Pollenca and Alcudia.

On your way back from the viewpoint, make a stop at Cala Figuera, a district of Santanyí. The town is around 60km to the south-east of Palma and a great place to grab a drink and sit on the beach. The traditional town was first mentioned in records in 1306 but it was not until the end of the 19th century that the first houses were built in the area.

Day Five – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

Morning relaxing at your accommodation.

I loved spending mornings relaxing at our villa. I would have a coffee, eat breakfast, workout and then go for a swim for a bit, then read my book for a few hours before heading for lunch.

Lunch at Port de Pollenca

I would recommend a lot of the lovely restaurants by the side of the beach which serves food all day and has an array of dishes on the menu. The steak at Restaurante Celler la Parra was incredible!

Then after you’ve filled up, head on down to the beach where there is lots of space and time to relax. There are deck chairs for rental or if you’d rather be spontaneous just take your towel and pitch up by the water.

Day Six – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

Spend the morning in soller, afternoon in alcúdia.

Alcúdia is home to one of Europe’s largest hotel complexes, Bellevue. With 8 swimming pools and 17 apartment blocks, the complex is set in 150,000 square meters of gardens.

Day Seven – One Week in Mallorca Itinerary

A morning in palma and then fly home.

Depending on when your flight home is, why not drive over to Palma a few hours before you need to be at the airport and explore a little of Palma.

Palma is the economic and cultural hub of Majorca and is a delightful base for exploring the island’s many gold and white beaches alongside the walled city, Palma’s Old Town which is an appealing maze of narrow streets.

Or if you have more time on your hands, hop on the Soller Railway for a 17-mile scenic trip, visit 14th-century Bellver Castle and the museum of contemporary art, and check out the nightlife.

Have you been to Mallorca? Where would you recommend this Mallorca itinerary?

Taking your car with you to Mallorca

Taking your car with you on holiday to Mallorca gives you absolute freedom to go where you want when you want in comfort. However, there are a few things to consider before you set off.

Whilst road tripping is undoubtedly one of the best ways to see a country, ensuring your car is up to the trip, planning your route in advance and familiarising yourself with the road rules and regulations of the country you are visiting, will make the driving an enjoyable part of your trip rather than creating unwanted stress on your holiday.

Cost of driving to Mallorca

If you decide to drive through France to reach Spain then you will need to consider the various regulation changes, tolls and insurance implications. Check out our guide to Driving in France .

Motorways ('autopistas') and dual-carriageway roads ('autovías') in Spain have seen recent improvements and are now amongst the best in Europe. Motorways are prefixed with 'AP' and they are toll roads ('autopistas de peaje'). The charge for using them is payable by cash or credit card. You will find that the motorways themselves are never particularly crowded whilst the non-toll roads leading to the same destination can be busy. For a quick journey, using the motorway network is probably best but, if you are not in a hurry and want to save money, you'll be better off using the 'autovías' that are prefixed with an 'A'. All 'A' roads are toll-free.

On a trip to Mallorca you will need to add a ferry into the equation. Ferries run from Barcelona, Valencia and Denia on the mainland, as well as from Ibiza and Menorca from Palma and Port d'Alcúdia. You just need to take into consideration times and days of travel, the size of your vehicle, and the number of passengers as the prices vary. We would highly recommend booking in advance, especially during busy periods.

Driving through Majorca

Having your own car is the best way to explore the true Mallorca, allowing you the freedom to visit the island's most remote coves, natural parks and authentic villages. Here are some tips for those behind the wheel in Mallorca.

Parking For street parking, blue lines indicate this is a zone where you need to pay for parking (known as 'ORA'). Seek out the ticket machine in the area so you can buy your pay and display ticket. These zones do often have ‘free periods’ but these vary from area to area, so just check on the ticket machine. If the lines are yellow, parking is not allowed while white lines mean free parking. Keep an eye out for disabled parking spaces as well. In many Mallorca towns you should pay attention to signs placed around parking areas that may indicate a market or other event taking place the following day and make sure you park in legal parking spaces. Otherwise, you could be fined, or even have your car towed away.

Petrol stations Pretty much all petrol stations sell unleaded petrol ('gasolina sin plomo') in 98 and 95 grades, as well as diesel ('gasóleo' or 'gasoil') which can be regular or premium with additives to protect the engine. You will find that fuel is more expensive on the island than mainland Spain.

Renting a car You might prefer to fly to Mallorca and just pick up a car once you arrive on the island. There are various car rental companies based all over Mallorca. The best offers can be found online, so we recommend you book beforehand. Age requirements and restrictions vary from company to company, please check the small print. Also remember to bring your driving license, passport, a credit card and any other documentation you might require upon picking up your car.

If you are flying to the island, it’s probably best to hire a car from the airport. The car rental kiosks are easy to find as soon as you come out of the sliding doors at baggage reclaim. Alternatively, it's possible to pick up a car from most of the large resorts.

Taking the scenic route to Mallorca

Mallorca’s most scenic driving routes can be found on the western coastline, which is known for its dramatic landscapes and picturesque villages. The popular route between Port d’Andratx and Port de Sóller serves up some epic sea views and mountain backdrops at every twist and turn. Not to mention the opportunity to stop off in the affluent village of Deià. The winding roads provide excitement for drivers and their passengers, but perhaps this isn’t a route for those who suffer from car sickness. If you prefer a shorter drive, the route from Palma to Valldemossa and then Deià could be a more appealing option. The scenery is equally stunning!

If you want to explore Mallorca’s central plains then you will be welcomed with long stretches of old Roman roads, surrounded by stunning almond and olive groves, vineyards and some pretty little windmills. There is ample opportunity to stop off at one of the many market towns to immerse yourself in authentic Mallorcan life, and a well-deserved coffee break of course. Head for the wine region of Binissalem to experience some of the best of rural Mallorca.

Road rules & regulations in Majorca

When driving in a different country, it is important that you are aware of any road laws and restrictions that may differ from home.

Speed Limits In built up areas, stick to 50km/h and 90 km/h on other roads, for example on the outskirts of towns. Dual carriageways separated by a central reservation and motorways (toll roads) have a maximum speed of 120km/h.

Fines Spanish fines will be sent to your home address. If paid within the first 20 days, you can benefit from a 50% discount. They can even be paid online on the DGT ('Dirección General de Tráfico') website . The use of radar detectors is also absolutely forbidden in Spain and failure to comply can involve a fine.

Drink driving If the level of alcohol in the bloodstream exceeds 0.5gr/l (0.25g/l breath alcohol) then severe penalties including fines, imprisonment and/or loss of licence will ensue. This means that just one pint of beer can take you up to the limit. The police also use saliva drug tests to detect people under the influence of drugs whilst behind the wheel.

Mobile phones Mobile phones may not be used whilst driving unless with a hands-free kit.

Triangles & High Vis Reflective jackets are mandatory to carry, someone walking on the road or hard shoulder can be fined if not wearing one. Warning triangles are also compulsory in every vehicle with 4 wheels or more and Spanish residents must carry 2.

Seatbelts If you have passengers in your car then the wearing of seatbelts is compulsory for both front and back seat passengers. Children up to the age of 12 and measuring less than 135cm in height must travel in the back seats of the car and be seated in a child restraint system adapted to their size and weight. Children measuring more than 135cm may use an adult seat belt. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengers are appropriately restrained.

Use of the Horn Unnecessary use of audible warning devices is prohibited. Warning signals must be brief in built-up areas, and local authorities may prohibit the use of such signals completely, which is indicated by signs, except in an emergency.

Legal documents & paperwork in Majorca

In Majorca, you are expected to have all your vehicle registration documents ready for inspection on demand. You should always have the following documentation in your car with you:

  • Full valid driving licence
  • Original vehicle registration document
  • MOT or equivalent test certificate

Motor Insurance At least a month before taking your vehicle overseas, you should contact your car insurance company to ensure that you are adequately covered and are in possession of the necessary documentation. Many insurance companies will only insure a vehicle overseas for a maximum of 90 days at a time so, if you are planning on an extended stay, you may have to make additional cover arrangements. Even if it is not essential to carry a Green Card when driving within the EU, it is instantly recognisable proof of (at least) 3rd party insurance cover and is obtainable from your insurance company.

Breakdown Cover Whilst checking out your insurance policy you should also ensure that you have European breakdown cover just in case of accident or mechanical failure. This can be part of your motor insurance or a separate company.

Equipment checklist for driving to Mallorca

Before embarking on your journey, you want to be sure that your vehicle is mechanically up to the job. Breakdowns and repairs abroad can be costly and take time out of your holiday so servicing your car well in advance of your trip should help. There are a few simple checks you can do yourself to prepare your vehicle for the trip.

  • Battery: A battery rarely last longer than 5 years and a long journey with lights, heaters or AC and windscreen wipers going puts a lot of additional strain on it. Consider replacing it before you go if it is approaching the end of its life
  • Fluids: Check the oil and water levels and ensure they are topped up correctly.
  • Lights: Check that all lights are working, clean and correctly aimed. For UK cars driving on the continent, you must fit headlight deflectors or adjust your beams so that you don’t dazzle oncoming vehicles when driving on the right.
  • Windscreen wipers: Check front and rear wiper blades for wear or splitting and replace if necessary.
  • Number Plates: Your number plates should be clean and legible as it is possible to be fined if they cannot be read. Most European number plates now come with a dual country and Euro badge so the need for a conventional country sticker when travelling within the EU is not necessary. However, if you are in an older car that does not have this then make sure you place a country sticker on the back.

Breakdown procedure in Majorca

Should you break down on a main public highway or motorway, follow these six simple steps:

  • Pull into the hard shoulder or as close into the side as you can and turn on your emergency warning lights.
  • Put on your high vis safety vest.
  • Exit the vehicle from the right-hand side (the side away from passing traffic).
  • Place your warning triangle 50 metres away in the direction of the approaching traffic. If it's a dual carriageway road you only need to place a triangle behind your car but if the road is a single carriageway, you also need to place another triangle in front of it.
  • Make sure yourself and your passengers are behind the motorway safety barrier or in a safe position.
  • Use a phone to alert your insurance company via your breakdown help line number.

The breakdown company will find a local tow truck ('grúa') to collect your car, who will then take it to a garage.

Taking your car with you to

Road accidents in Majorca & What to do

If you are unlucky enough to end up in an accident whilst driving in Mallorca, then there are certain procedures that you must follow:

  • Move to a safe place and alert oncoming traffic by placing your red warning triangle 50 metres down the road.
  • If two cars are involved, complete an accident report detailing the events that led up to the incident.
  • Take pictures of the aftermath if you have a camera handy.
  • If the drivers cannot agree on a version of events then do not sign any documentation and contact the police for assistance.

Included in the accident report are the following details:

  • Date and place of the accident (full address).
  • Vehicle information: make, model numbers, and vehicle registration numbers.
  • Drivers' information: full names, addresses, driving license details (number, category, date, and place of issue), identification (NIE, DNI or passport number)
  • Details of insurance companies and policies of all drivers
  • Witnesses: names and addresses
  • Injuries (yes/no)
  • Vehicle damage (yes/no)
  • An illustration and explanation of the accident including details of damage caused
  • Circumstances of the accident, including weather conditions, speeds involved

If you are involved in a serious accident resulting in casualties, then contact the emergency services by dialing 112 as soon as you can, having placed yourself in a secure spot. Do not move the vehicles until the police arrive.

More inspiration...

Sometimes you might not need or want to use your car. The good news is, there are lots of local public transportation links in Mallorca. Buses and trains are the most common forms of public transport for tourists visiting the island and are relatively cheap. Many visitors find using public transport just adds to the holiday experience. For those who prefer to travel at their own pace, taxis are another option and are surprisingly reasonable in price too.

Where to Stay for One Week in Mallorca

There’s no shortage of coastal (and inland) towns in Mallorca to stay in, but since this is a Mallorca itinerary without a car, I wanted to base myself in Palma de Mallorca and take day trips .

For the dates of my trip, I could only find the right accommodation for me in the nearby town of El Arenal .

It is a popular tourist coastal town that didn’t exactly have the vibe I was looking for, but I made the most of it (and I did like its beach). I used bus 23 to get to Palma’s center and bus 25 to get to Palma’s central bus station.

I stayed at Hotel Gracia in El Arenal , but I suggest you find accommodation in Palma if possible, though note that it can be pricier.

In terms of places to stay in Palma, check out the highly-rated options I found, like: 1. Mallorca Suites (spacious apartments for 2-6 people in the heart of the old town). 2. Ca n’Alexandre (cozy double rooms, a rooftop terrace). 3. Boutique Hotel Posada Terra Santa (double rooms & suites, a rooftop terrace & pool, and an on-site spa). If you’re looking for a hostel, check out El Josemari Youth Hostel – Albergue Juvenil .

If you skip out on the tour to Cuevas del Drach, you can also base yourself in Soller or Port de Soller and still make this itinerary work.

Getting Around Mallorca Without a Car (By Bus)

How long does it take to travel around Mallorca by bus? Is it even possible to get around my Mallorca by bus? What else do I need to know about buses in Mallorca? Don’t worry – I’m here to give you some essential tips.

Is It Possible to Get around Mallorca by Bus

From Palma’s central bus station (Estació Intermodal), you’ll find dozens of intercity buses that will take you to different parts of the island.

However, many of the places I wanted to visit in eastern Mallorca required a lot of bus switches, and it was challenging to plan “normal” daily itineraries starting and ending in Palma.

To explore that area, it’ll be better to have a car or base yourself there.

As I said, I decided to focus mostly on the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which was easily reachable by bus. The longest ride took one hour, so it was pretty convenient.

It’s also good to know that intercity buses operate on natural gas and are very modern, clean, and spacious.

An alley in the Jewish quarter of Palma

Paying for Buses in Mallorca

In and around Palma (not including the airport), a single ticket costs 2€, and you just pay the driver in cash (note that you can’t give him more than 10€). That’s how I traveled from El Arenal to Palma’s central bus station.

When you’re traveling around the island, a single ticket costs 4.5€, which you can purchase from the driver in cash, though using a credit card will give you a discount, depending on how many people you’re paying for.

Simply validate your card for each passenger – once when you get on the bus (in the machine next to the driver) and once before you get off (in the machine next to the bus’ back door).

Palma’s Central Bus Station (Estació Intermodal)

Located across from Plaça d’Espanya, the station is a bit confusing to find at first as it is situated in the subterranean part of the square (on the main street, you’ll only find Palma’s city buses).

You’ll see the escalator right next to the cafe & restaurant La Parada.

7 Days in Mallorca – Day 1

This day is dedicated to Valldemossa and Deia , two of the most beautiful places in Mallorca.

Surrounded by the natural landscapes of the Serra de Tramuntana, they boast the kind of charm you’ll only find in mountainous towns.

Getting from Palma to Valldemossa and Deia (and back):  From Palma’s Estació Intermodal, take bus number 203 ( timetable here ). It has stops in both towns, so you can choose which one to visit first.

Alternatively, take this highly-rated day tour or this tour to visit Soller, Valldemossa, and Deia with a guide (they’re not cheap, but they’re two of the only tours that include all three places).

A house and the natural landscapes around it in Valldemossa

Valldemossa

Visiting Valldemossa was a dream come true for me as it had been on my bucket list for a long time, and it definitely did not disappoint.

Walking from the bus stop to the town’s center, don’t panic if you see a lot of tourists, because once you pass the first few streets (which are packed with shops and cafes), it becomes significantly less crowded.

I’m not saying you’re going to be the only one there, but as you start to lose yourself in Valldemossa’s quintessential plant-adorned streets and alleys, you’ll find more than enough quiet corners.

Apart from roaming freely, you can visit several points of interest in Valldemossa, including the 14th-century Chartusian Monastery (originally a royal residence of the kings of Mallorca), Frédéric Chopin and George Sand Museum, Rei Joan Carles Gardens, and Sa Miranda Des Lledoners viewpoint.

Views over Valldemossa from a lookout point

Deia is smaller than Valldemossa, and, at first sight, it might seem similar, but it doesn’t take long to see that it has its own unique vibe.

It’s home to an archeological museum housing prehistoric artifacts found on the island, it’s where you can visit the house-museum of poet and author Robert Graves, and it’s a great (and surprising) place for art lovers, with quite a few art galleries scattered throughout the town.

You’ll also find many restaurants and cafes in Deia with terraces overlooking the gorgeous scenery, and what’s better than a cup of coffee or a meal with a view?

7 Days in Mallorca – Days 2+3

Palma de mallorca.

While it is possible to spend only one day in  Palma de Mallorca , I dedicated 48 hours to the island’s wonderful capital city. I loved it way more than I thought I would and discovered dozens of amazing spots to visit.

If you want to explore this city with a guide, you can also  take one of these walking tours:

  • Free walking tour of Palma de Mallorca (mainly explores the old town)
  • Three cultures of Palma free tour (focuses on the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian history of the city)

Can Forteza Rey, a modernist building in Palma de Mallorca

On your first day, focus on Palma’s old town – there’s a lot to do and see here, so take your time.

Start by visiting some of its most famous landmarks, including the impressive 13th-century Palma Cathedral and the 14th-century Royal Palace of La Almudaina, a royal residence of the monarchs of the Kingdom of Majorca.

You can get your Palma Cathedral ticket here or book a guided tour . You can also purchase a combo ticket that includes both the cathedral and the royal palace .

Next, lose yourself in the old town’s lovely maze of streets and squares, lined with an abundance of cozy cafes , shops, traditional bakeries, unique modernist buildings, beautiful churches, art galleries, and so much more.

Be sure to explore the indoor market Mercat de l’Olivar, photograph Gaudi-style buildings like Can Corbella and Can Forteza Rey, have some hot chocolate at Ca’n Joan de s’Aigo, walk along Passeig del Born, and stroll through Palma’s Jewish Quarter.

front facade of a house in Palma

On your second day, you’ll have time to see what else Palma has to offer.

First, climb up to the 14th-century Castell de Bellver, a castle built for King Jaume II of Majorca and a famous Spanish landmark , overlooking the city and the harbor. See prices and opening hours here.

Unless you have a car with you or a ticket to the Hop-On Hop-Off bus , you’ll have to do the final ascent on foot, so bring comfortable shoes .

Next, explore the neighborhood of Santa Catalina (one of the best free things to do in Palma ), and don’t miss its 100-year-old indoor food market.

What used to be a fishermen’s quarter is now known as the Soho of Palma thanks to restaurants offering international cuisines, boutique shops, trendy bars, and colorful streets.

Head to the Es Jonquet district to absorb its village-like charm and see its centuries-old windmills, and if you find yourself with some extra time, spend another evening in the old town.

7 Days in Mallorca – Day 4

This day is dedicated to  Mirador Es Colomer (Es Colomer lookout point),  Platja de Formentor (Formentor Beach), and  Port de Pollença .

Getting from Palma to Port de Pollença (and back):  From Palma’s Estació Intermodal, take bus number 301 ( timetable here ) and get off at Port de Pollença – Estació.

Getting from Port de Pollença to Mirador Es Colomer and Platja de Formentor (and back):  From Port de Pollença – Estació, take bus number 334 ( timetable here ). It has stops in both places, so you can choose which one to visit first.

Alternatively, book this guided tour , which goes through a similar route to mine.

Port de Pollenca beach

Mirador ES Colomer

The Formentor Peninsula boasts plenty of scenic spots.

Those taking a road trip can get all the way to Cap de Formentor (Mallorca’s northernmost point) and its 19th-century lighthouse, but even if you’re traveling by bus, you can still admire the peninsula’s landscapes.

The most iconic viewpoint in Mallorca, Mirador Es Colomer, is reachable by public transportation, which is no less than impressive considering the jaw-dropping scenery you’ll see.

Overlooking the rugged Mediterranean coastline and the northern peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, it is a fantastic spot to start your day, though many people also choose to watch the sunset there.

Bus 334’s timetable will give about an hour to enjoy this viewpoint, which I thought was just the right amount of time.

The views seen from Mirador Es Colomer, Mallorca

Platja de Formentor

There’s no shortage of beautiful beaches in Mallorca.

Still, it seems like many of the insta-worthy extra-turquoise ones are more conveniently reachable by car (some are also reachable by bus, but depending on where you’re staying, you might need three buses and several hours to get there).

Platja de Formentor is easy to add to this daily itinerary, and while some say this beach is overrated, I don’t care because I absolutely loved it. I got to see its crystal-clear water and the natural beauty of this part of the Formentor Peninsula, and that was more than enough for me.

You’ll also find a few restaurants/cafes on this beach, but I haven’t tried them myself.

I don’t know if it’s because I visited in May, because that morning was a bit cloudy, or because I just got lucky, but there were very few people there that day, which added to the positive experience.

Formentor beach, Mallorca

Port de Pollença

I admit that I underestimated Port de Pollença because I thought it was just another resort town, but I loved spending a couple of hours there. Its tranquility, lovely promenade, and stunning coastline have won me over.

It’s an ideal place to unwind – you can wander the shops, grab a bite, have some ice cream, or just sit back and stare at the waves.

Port de Pollenca waterfront

7 Days in Mallorca – Day 5

On this day, you’ll take the vintage train to the town of  Soller  and visit the charming  Jardines de Alfabia  (Alfabia Gardens).

Known for its abundance of citrus groves, Soller was once a thriving orange exporter and one of the richest towns in Mallorca.

In fact, you can take a self-guided tour at Ecovinyassa, an enchanting orchard on the outskirts of the town and a hidden gem in Mallorca , to learn more about this aspect of Soller’s history (be sure to  make a reservation  in advance).

This town is also home to a beautiful main square (dominated by the Sant Bartomeu Church), charming streets lined with shops and restaurants, modernist buildings, several museums and art galleries, and even a botanical garden.

Apart from the lively La Plaza de la Constitución, two notable spots are the Modernist Museum of Can Prunera, located on the famous Sa Lluna street, and the Picasso and Miró exhibition rooms found inside the Sóller Railway Station.

A quiet street in Soller

Getting to Soller:  While you can get to this lovely town by bus, taking the vintage train is a must-have experience in Mallorca. Inaugurated in 1912, the old wooden train connects Palma to Soller, which was pretty much isolated until that time due to its location in the Serra de Tramuntana.

I was a bit skeptical about this attraction because it’s so popular, but once we got out of Palma, the views were worth it.

Right before getting to Soller, there’s an extra stop at an amazing lookout point called Mirador del Pujol de’n Banya, which is a total bonus.

Tickets:  Right next to Palma’s Estació Intermodal, you’ll see the vintage train ticket office and station. I only bought a way-one ticket, but you can purchase a round trip or a combined ticket that also includes the vintage tram ride from Soller to the coastal town of  Port de Soller .  See the latest prices and timetables here.

If you find yourself with some spare time, you can also take bus 232 from Soller to  Fornalutx , considered one of the most charming villages in Mallorca.

Townhouses in Soller, Mallorca

Jardines de Alfabia

I didn’t want to go back to Palma de Mallorca on the vintage train because I had to visit the picture-perfect complex of Jardines de Alfabia.

Consisting of a villa and gorgeous gardens, this place’s history traces back to the Arab era in Mallorca (10th-13th centuries).

With a backdrop of the Tramuntana mountains, a circular route will allow you to enjoy the gardens’ beauty to the fullest, taking you through fountains, ponds, palm trees, and more.

Before heading out, don’t skip out on having a cup of coffee in the serene and scenic cafe area. Get your tickets here , and consult the latest opening hours  here .

Getting from Soller to Jardines de Alfabia (and back to Palma):  Get on bus 204 ( timetable here ) at a stop called Cetre (61009) and get off at the gardens. From there, you can take the same bus back to Palma.

Views of the house and pond of the Alfabia Gardens

7 Days in Mallorca – Day 6

On this day, you’ll visit two must-see towns in Mallorca –  Alcudia  and  Pollença .

Getting from Palma to Alcudia:  From Palma’s Estació Intermodal, take bus number 302 ( timetable here ) and get off at Pollèntia, the bus stop located across from Alcudia’s tourist information center.

While the area of Alcudia and its surroundings has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, the town’s two most prominent landmarks are the ruins of the Roman city of Pollentia and the 14th-century medieval walls, commissioned by King Jaume II of Aragon because of its strategic location.

There’s something extra charming about walled towns, and it was a real pleasure to step inside Alcudia’s gates, explore its streets and alleys, and climb and walk along the wall to appreciate the views.

An alley in Alcudia, Mallorca

If you’re here on a Sunday or a Tuesday, you can also enjoy the weekly local market, open from 8 AM to 1:30 PM.

If you want to add some beach time to this daily itinerary, buses 302, 315, and 322 will take you to the nearby coastal town of Port d’Alcúdia, where you can soak up the sun on Playa de Alcudia and Playa de Muro.

Getting from Alcudia to Pollença:  From the bus stop Centre Històric (just outside Alcudia’s tourist information center), take bus 322 ( timetable here ) to   Pollença.

Church of St Jaume in Alcudia, Mallorca

When you first get to Pollença, you might be a bit underwhelmed, but within a 5-minute walk from the bus stop, you’ll get to the old town, which will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

That’s not surprising, considering the fact that one of Pollença’s most influential rulers was the Order of Solomon’s Temple, also known as the  Knights Templar , who built the Esglèsia de Nostra Senyora dels Àngels, a church that still stands today in the heart of the town’s center.

Apart from roaming freely through the main square (Plaça Major) and the cobbled streets, you must climb the 365 stairs to the Calvary Chapel, which offers incredible panoramic views.

If you feel like doing some more physical activity, you can also hike to the Santuari del Puig de Maria, the oldest monastery in Mallorca.

Getting from Pollença back to Palma:  Take bus 301 ( timetable here ) from   Pollença back to Palma’s Estació Intermodal.

Views from the wall of Alcudia

7 Days in Mallorca – Day 7

On this day, you’ll visit the most famous natural landmark in Mallorca,  Cuevas del Drach  (and Cuevas del Hams if you choose to), and spend some time at one of the beaches near Palma.

Cuevas Del Drach

If you love visiting caves, you have to include Cuevas del Drach on your Mallorca trip itinerary.

Consisting of four interconnected caves, this complex was formed by the Mediterranean Sea millions of years ago, boasting countless beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes, including Lake Martel, one of the largest in the world.

The tour inside these caves includes a route of more than 1 km, an optional boat ride in Lake Martel, and even a short classical music concert. Note that they’re a popular attraction, so keep in mind that they’re going to be busy.

Since they’re located in eastern Mallorca, the easiest way to get to Cuevas del Drach from Palma without renting a car is to book a half-day tour . You’ll also see an option to book a full-day tour that includes the nearby Cuevas dels Hams.

If you only take the half-day tour, you’ll have enough time to end your trip with some relaxing beach time. Since I stayed in El Arenal, I soaked up the sun on Arenal Beach.

That said, you can check out other beaches in and around Palma, including Platja de Can Pere Antoni (not the best but is the closest to Palma’s center), Platja de Can Pastilla, Platja de Cala Major, and Playa de Illetes.

Arenal Beach and its palm trees

Is a Week in Mallorca Enough?

‘Enough’ is a subjective word, so as someone who loves to experience each destination to the fullest, exploring Mallorca in 1 week was only enough to focus on a specific area of the island, especially since I didn’t take a road trip and only used buses to get around.

Deciding how many days you need in Mallorca depends on how many & which places you want to visit and whether you’ll rent a car or not – you can see a few of Mallorca’s highlights in 4-5 days, and you can also take a 2-week road trip through the entire island.

1 Week in Mallorca Without a Car – Other Travel Tips and Notes

When to visit.

I visited at the end of May. You can already see A LOT of tourists, yet some places were not as crowded as I expected, so in comparison to June, July, and August, I’d say May is a very good time to visit Mallorca.

I also got to enjoy great weather, though a few mornings were a bit cloudy (and even rainy), so pack accordingly.

Getting to Mallorca

While there are direct flights to this Mediterranean island from so many airports across the world, you could also book a flight from Madrid or Barcelona, as well as take a ferry from Barcelona or Valencia (the ride takes roughly 8 hours).

Since Mallorca is such a touristy island, all service providers speak English. That said, it’s good to know that the official languages of the island are Catalan and Spanish.

Other Places I Would Have Loved to Visit

If I were to rent a car, I would add the following places to my itinerary:

  • Mondrago Natural Park, located on the southeastern coast, and the nearby port of Cala Figuera.
  • The town of Capdepera and its castle, and the nearby Cala Mesquida.
  • Cala Mitjana.

I normally rent a car when I plan on visiting different areas, but this is good to know in case the car rentals are too expensive. Thanks for the tips!

You’re more than welcome! I agree a road trip is better if you want to get to every nook and cranny, but buses were very budget-friendly 🙂

I haven’t been to Mallorca since I was a child, but we went everywhere by bus. You’ve made me want to visit again!

Thank you! Sounds like you had great memories 🙂

My First Days in the City: Ms. TM Travels to Moscow, Part 2

This is the second post in a 3-part series on my business and leisure trip to Russia in April 2016. Read Part 1 here .

The great thing about choosing an early morning flight is that you still have an entire day to spend on work and leisure. This was exactly the case for me after I had settled into my hotel in Moscow, the Radisson Slavyanskaya.

my travel car palma

Read more about my arrival in Russia in Part One of my Ms. TM Travels to Moscow series.

Moscow – Day One

The first item on my itinerary was a lunch meeting at Uryuk Café at Evropeyskiy, the European Mall just a short distance away from the hotel. The café serves Uzkbek food, a cuisine that was unfamiliar to my Filipino palette. The meal was very interesting – Hearty with bold flavors, and definitely a must-try for anyone.

my travel car palma

With my work commitments done for the morning, I had a few hours free to explore this new city I was in.

Again, the early schedule worked to my advantage. When travelling for work, I really recommend careful scheduling of your meetings and tasks so you have time in between to relax and de-stress. It’s a great way to mix business and leisure when travelling.

Luckily, my excitement to explore was stronger than my jet lag, and I had enough energy to check out the Moscow metro stations that afternoon. My Russian friend, Anastasia, came along, and taught me how to use the metro. I recommend trying this mode of transportation at least once, as each station is a sight to behold, truly magnificent as if it were a museum.

my travel car palma

If you would rather travel by car, your options are Uber or the local taxi app, YandexTaxi. Both are easily downloadable on the AppStore and GooglePlay. There are no taxi stations, and you need to call for a cab each time you want to ride, otherwise the rate will be extremely high.

A quick training session followed my Metro tour. Afterwards, for dinner that evening, I found myself back at Evropeyskiy with my friend Anastasia and Dr. Lilianna Myslovich, A professor in the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) in the department of aesthetic medicine; gives lectures on laser equipment application in cosmetology.  This time we tried out Goodman Steak House, which serves European cuisine. Bellies full, it was time to turn in after a very long day.

Moscow – Day Two

The morning of my second day in Moscow was again spent with Anastasia. This time she took me to see Moscow State University and the Sparrow Hills Observation Deck. Atop Sparrow Hills, I got an amazing panoramic view of Moscow, with the majestic university building on one side. It’s a must-see, whether you choose to go up there during the day or at night.

my travel car palma

Energized by the amazing view, I was off to work for a few hours. This time I learned about the latest in wellness and beauty laser therapy at a local hospital. This was my only work commitment for the day, and again I had bought myself time to enjoy afterwards.

my travel car palma

My leisure time on this day involved a lot of walking, sightseeing and stopping for photos. I got to see the areas of metropolitan government, the Moscow Bridge, and several parks. I enjoyed walking down Arbat Street, the oldest pedestrian street in the city. This is a vibrant tourist destination with its rows of local restaurants and souvenir shops open both day and night.

my travel car palma

Another landmark I got to see that day was Christ the Savior Cathedral, the biggest Orthodox Church in Russia. Highly reflective of Russian faith and culture, this place is beautiful by day, and absolutely stunning at night. Tourists are free to come here in the daytime, and the best part is there is no entrance fee required.

my travel car palma

Places to Eat in Moscow

My favorite among all the restaurants I got to visit during my trip was Chaihona , which also serves Uzbek cuisine. The ambience here is cozy and relaxing, and dishes are large enough to be shared. I loved the homey and relaxed ambience of the restaurant. The interiors are well-planned, and even the restrooms are beautifully designed. This mixed with its great food and good music makes this place a really special one for me.

my travel car palma

Other restaurants you should definitely check out are:

  • Korchma Taras Bulba , a Ukranian restaurant that serves delicious food, and is filled with enchanting details, from the furnishings to the uniforms of the servers
  • Café Pushkin for Russian cuisine
  • Ded Pikhto   for Russian food
  • Kafe Khinkalnaya  for Georgian food

Plan to spend anywhere from $30 to $50 for a meal at any of these places, as well as those I talked about in my earlier posts.

For budget-friendlier options, try some of these local fast food restaurants:

  • Shokoladnitsa

There’s a lot more fun coming up in day three. I can’t wait to share the rest of my trip with you in the next installment of my Moscow series!

Vladimir lenin, the leader of the russian revolution loved big, fancy, expensive, foreign cars, vladimir lenin, the leader of the bolsheviks and champion of the working class did harbour some upper class traits which are not common knowledge, and one of those was a liking for big expensive cars – and houses. , there are many stories about the number that he possessed during his short time as leader, but it appears that he did own a number of american buicks, as well as at least three rolls royces so how did he come to acquire them, the first vehicles came into the hands of bolsheviks after confiscating the property of the romanov family. along came 40 vehicles, including luxury cars, some of which  were appropriated by lenin for his own personal use., he then began to  enjoy the good life just like the tsars as illustrated by this photo taken at the may day red army parade in moscow 1918, in late 1918 lenin was shot twice in an assassination attempt, and in the next few years he developed a number of serious health issues which meant that he spent less and less time in moscow at the heart of the new communist government. from 1920 he spent much of his time at his gorki mansion just outside moscow – another acquisition from the russian nobility, lenin’s unique roll’s-royce silver ghost was actually purchased on 11 july 1922 from london. it cost  £1,850, acquired for a 15 % discount as a side deal of a secret bomber planes engines deal that the young russian government had with rolls-royce. that fact alone is amazing revolutions come and go, but business continues as normal., once the car was purchased, lenin then set  about having it modified for use in the harsh russian winters, and he turned to adolphe kegresse, tsar nicholas ii’s personal driver. kegresse was a brilliant french military engineer and inventor of the half-track and dual clutch transmissions., russian workers manufactured the newly designed caterpillar tracks and skis and attached them to the car, which lenin used to travel to and from the moscow kremlin from his gorki mansion. and kegresse became lenin’s driver. truth is stranger than fiction, today lenin’s rolls royce silver ghost is housed at the gorki mansion which is a museum of lenin’s many interesting possessions. it can be visited on a tour entitled russian highlights which is offered by the russian travel centre, sydney. or if you book your moscow stopover with them, they can arrange a personal tour from moscow to gorki with your own driver and guide – and it won’t cost a fortune. contact [email protected]. , want to keep up to date with all the information and blogs that i have posted each month want to make sure you don’t miss out on any important travel information want to hear/see me unravel travel for you, then sign up for my free monthly newsletter. no waffle, no hard sell – just short and sweet and to the point  look to the bottom of the page for the sign-up form. sign up now and your details are totally confidential., leave a reply, leave a reply cancel reply.
