From Florence to the Beaches of Nice: How to Watch the 2024 Tour de France

This year’s edition starts in Italy and features one of the toughest opening stages ever, a 206-kilometer ride from Florence to Rimini taking riders through the heart of the Apennine mountains.

How to Watch the Tour de France in the U.S.

How to watch the tour de france in canada, what happened last year, riders to watch, tour de france history.

The Tour de France was first raced in 1903 when journalist (and former bike racer) Henri Desgrange organized the event to promote L’Auto-Vélo, a French sporting newspaper that he edited–and is known today as L’Equipe. The newspaper was actually printed on yellow paper, which fuels one of the narratives surrounding the origins of the maillot jaune . That year’s Tour covered 2,428 km (1,509 mi) spread over just six stages–the average stage length was about 405 km (251 mi)–and only 21 of the original 60 starters finished the inaugural event.

Despite the low number of finishers, the event was an overwhelming success, and the Tour has since become one of the largest sporting events in the world, an event for which teams with multi-million dollar budgets spend years trying to win. For the riders, just a single stage win or day in the yellow jersey is a career-defining achievement. Riders who win the overall title–even just once–go down in history.

This year’s race covers 3,492 km (2,165 mi) spread over 21 stages, with eight days for the sprinters, two individual time trials, seven mountain stages, and about four stages for the punchy opportunists who head up the road in search of “do-or-die” breakaway stage victories–we love those guys.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France:

map

The route of the 2024 Tour de France is unlike any we’ve ever seen, mainly because it’s bookended by two of the biggest “firsts” in the event’s 110-year history: it’s the first to begin in Italy and the first to end outside of Paris (in Nice).

The Tour begins in Florence on Saturday, June 29th, the first of three-and-a-half stages in Italy. And we’re expecting fireworks right away: Stages 1 and 2 are two of the toughest opening stages we’ve ever seen, even harder than the opening stages of last year’s Tour, which took place in the hilly Basque region of northern Spain.

After a day for the sprinters on Stage 3, Stage 4 begins in Pinerolo and brings the race back into France via the 2,642m Col du Galibier. The second-highest climb in this year’s race, the first rider to the summit will win a cash prize given each year in honor of Degrange. By the end of one of the earliest mountain stages in Tour history, the GC battle will be in full swing.

The sprinters will then get two more chances as the race heads north. But the GC battle will resume on Friday, July 5th, with Stage 7, the first of two individual time trials in this year’s Tour. The first week ends with Sunday’s Stage 9, an exciting stage featuring 14 sections of white gravel roads through France’s Champagne region. This will be the first gravel stage in the history of the men’s Tour de France–the women completed a gravel stage of their own through the region in 2022.

After the Tour’s first Rest Day, the race resumes on Tuesday, July 9th, and begins a southwesterly trip–through the Massif Central, which hosts a rugged finish to Stage 11–toward the Pyrenees. Along the way, the sprinters will have a few more opportunities to win a stage before the high mountains return over the weekend.

And they return in a big way, with back-to-back hors categorie (“beyond category”) summit finishes in the mountains that form the border between France and Spain. Saturday’s Stage 12 takes the riders over the Tourmalet–which Desgrange first thought was too hard for the Tour de France–and ends with a finish at the Pla d'Adet ski resort, while Sunday’s Stage 13 ends on the Plateau de Beille–after almost 198km of racing.

As if the mountains aren’t enough cause for excitement, it’s also a holiday weekend: Sunday is Bastille Day–July 14th–so expect the roads on both days to be packed with “festive” fans. By the end of the day, the list of riders capable of winning the 2024 Tour de France will be much shorter than it was a week prior.

The Tour’s third and final week takes the race back east, where an Alpine finale looms. In all, the riders will spend four days in the mountains during the third week, first in the high Alps–with summit finishes at the end of Stage 17 ( at Superdévoluy) and Stage 19 (at Isola 2000). And don’t snooze on Thursday’s Stage 18, a saw-toothed stage from Gap to Barcelonnette that’s filled with short, jagged climbs and could be the perfect place for an ambush–or a Hail Mary–before the final weekend.

But this year’s final weekend is not what we’ve come to expect from Tours of the past. With the Summer Olympics beginning in Paris just five days after the end of the race, this year’s Tour skips its traditional finish on the Champs Elysees and instead finishes in Nice–after the hardest final weekend we’ve seen in decades.

The weekend opens on Saturday, July 20th, with Stage 20, a short but intense stage through the maritime Alps featuring four categorized ascents, including a summit finish on the Category 1 Col de la Couillole.

And just in case that doesn’t settle things, Sunday’s Stage 21 certainly will, as–for the first time in 35 years–the Tour de France ends with an individual time trial. And it’s a hard one: a 33.7 km race against the clock that takes the riders over the Col d'Èze, a tough Category 2 ascent that always features in the final stage of March’s Paris-Nice, an 8-day stage race that Tour contenders often use to build form during the first part of their seasons.

This might bode well for American fans–for two reasons. First, the last time the Tour de France ended with an individual time trial, American Greg Lemond defeated France’s Laurent Fignon–who entered the day wearing the yellow jersey–to win the Tour by eight seconds.

And this year’s winner of Paris-Nice–which finished with a stage over the Col d'Èze–was American Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), a 24-year-old from Idaho who took the yellow jersey on that final stage. Jorgenson will be lining up at this year’s Tour; could history repeat itself? We can’t wait to find out.

When it comes to watching the Tour de France, you’ve got lots of options. NBC’s Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year) streams all events organized by A.S.O., which means you can watch the Tour de France now and then the Tour de France Femmes in August. (And if you’re looking for ad-free coverage, you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $11.99 per month or $119.99 for the year.)

The Peacock app is available on Roku, Apple devices, Android and AndroidTV devices, Google platforms, Chromecast, Xbox consoles, PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, and LG Smart TVs. You can also watch online via the Peacock website.

If you have a good cable package and prefer conventional viewing on your television, you’re in luck: NBC will offer the race to cable subscribers via the USA Network and CNBC. Live coverage often starts around 7 a.m. EDT, so 9-to-5ers will likely need to record each stage and watch later. (Check the full schedule for details.)

If you’re in Canada, FloBikes ($29.99/month CDN) is the best way to watch the Tour de France. All 21 stages are available live and on-demand on FloBikes.com, the FloSports iOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV.

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the 2023 Tour de France, defeating Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) to defend his title from 2022. The two champions engaged in a tense battle during the first two weeks of the race and entered the second Rest Day separated by just ten seconds on the Tour’s General Classification.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 14

But Vingegaard exploded at the start of the third week, crushing Pogačar in an individual time trial on Stage 16 and then dropping him in the Alps on Stage 17. In just two stages, the Dane’s lead went from ten seconds to more than seven minutes. Pogačar saved face by winning Stage 20, but for the second year in a row, the winner of back-to-back Tours in 2020 and 2021 was forced to settle for second place–and the white jersey as the Tour’s Best Young Rider. Pogačar’s teammate, Great Britain’s Adam Yates–won Stage 1 and wore the Tour’s first yellow jersey–finished third overall.

Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was without question the Tour’s best sprinter. The Belgian won four stages and ran away with the green jersey as the winner of the Tour’s Points Classification. Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) won the polka dot jersey as the Tour’s King of the Mountains.

Jonas Vingegaard-Hansen (Visma-Lease a Bike)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 11

At this point in time, we’re waiting to hear if Vingegaard will even be starting this year’s Tour de France. The defending champion was one of several Tour favorites taken down in a massive crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April. The Dane spent twelve days in the hospital after breaking several bones and suffering a punctured lung in the fall and only resumed training a few weeks ago. Visma-Lease a Bike recently said he has a 50-50 chance of starting the race, but only will do so if the team feels he’s 100% ready to challenge for a third consecutive victory.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

tadej pogacar

The uncertainty surrounding Vingegaard’s participation makes Pogačar the top favorite. The Slovenian won back-to-back Tours in 2020 and 2021 and scored back-to-back second-place finishes behind the Dane in 2022 and 2023. He’s been training since winning six stages and the General Classification at the recent Giro d’Italia and looks on track to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani (in 1998) to win the Giro-Tour double.

Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step)

Vingegaard wasn’t the only Tour contender who went down in that terrible crash at the Tour of the Basque Country: Slovenia’s Primož Roglič–who was leading the race at the time–and Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel were victims as well, and both riders immediately abandoned the race. Roglič injured his knee–but suffered no major injuries–but Evenepoel needed surgery after breaking his clavicle and scapula.

Unlike Vingegaard, both riders were able to get back to training relatively quickly, and they both competed at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné . Roglič won two stages and the General Classification despite almost cracking at the end of the final stage. Evenepoel won the Dauphiné’s only individual time trial, but showed he still has some room to improve after fading in the mountains. He finished the race in seventh place overall.

Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers)

Rodríguez, who won a stage and finished fifth in last year’s Tour de France, won the final stage and finished fourth overall at the Dauphiné, the latest in a series of high-stage race finishes for the 23-year-old. He’ll likely be joining Colombia’s Egan Bernal (who won the Tour in 2019) and Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (Who won the Tour in 2018) on the starting line in Florence to form one of the deepest eight-rider line-ups in this year’s race.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

If Vingegaard proves unable to start the Tour, don’t be surprised if Visma-Lease a Bike turns to Matteo Jorgenson to lead the team in his place. After winning Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen in March, the American spent much of April and all of May at training camps, building form for the summer.

Well, it must’ve worked, as the 24-year-old nearly snatched the Dauphiné from Roglič after riding away with Rodríguez at the end of the final day. In the end, he lost the race by only eight seconds–another interesting coincidence given Lemond’s margin of victory at the Tour in 1989.

The American has never captained a team at the Tour de France, but he raced the French grand tour in 2022 and 2023–so he at least knows what the Tour’s pressure-cooker atmosphere feels like. And he should benefit from the presence of his teammate Sepp Kuss , the American who shockingly won last year’s Vuelta a España and played a pivotal role in each of the six grand Tours won by the team prior to his own victory at the Vuelta last September.

How to Watch the Tour de France 2024

The most anticipated cycling event in the world is back. Tag along and tune in to see all the action on Peacock.

Key art of cyclists for the Tour de France

The thrill of the ride is upon us once more. Cycling’s greatest event is back – the 2024 Tour de France begins Saturday, June 29. With a start in Italy and a finish in Nice, this year is unlike any other. Follow your favorite cyclists as they undertake grueling hills, long days, and tests of endurance as they move through the European countryside on their way to the finish line. Ride along and catch all 21 day-long stages of the Tour LIVE on Peacock.

What Is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France is a massive bike race that takes cyclists on a three-week journey through France. With the exact route changing every year, this is a unique challenge unlike anything else on the cycling calendar. The race is broken up into stages, with each day covering a certain portion of the route. Each stage has its own winner, and the winner of the entire event is the person who has the fastest time of all 21 stages. Every stage matters. Even winning one, even if the rider doesn’t win the tournament, will boost that rider’s standing significantly. Only the absolute best, most competitive riders make it into the Tour de France, so tensions are high for the right to win the coveted yellow jersey.

This year’s event challenges 176 riders. 22 teams of 8 riders will travel across 3,498 km of road, hill, and mountain terrain.  Riding for hours each day, the cyclists are put to the ultimate test as they try to have the lowest time and pass their fellow competitors, scaling mountains and gliding on roads in the process. While the course is always different and a new challenge for the riders, this year’s course is unprecedented. The Tour completely skips Paris – typically the finish line is located on the Champs-Elysées – and kicks off in Florence, Italy. With twelve new locations along the route and four countries total, this may be the best Tour de France yet.

What’s Different About This Year?

With the 2024 Summer Olympics beginning July 26 in Paris, the tour is having a few changes. The race avoids Paris entirely and will have its grand finale in the beautiful French Riveria. The race will travel through four countries – France, Italy, San Marino, and Monaco – and feature ten new locations along the way. Four mountain ranges will be visited – the Apennines, the Italian and French Alps, the Massif Central, and the Pyrenees – and 52,230m of total vertical gain. Rather than a sprint for the final stage, this year’s Tour de France Stage 21 will be a time trial for the first time since 1989.

Some athletes will finish the race and only have a few days rest before gearing up to represent their country in cycling at the Paris Olympics beginning July 27. France is in the world’s eye this summer and the Tour de France is sure to bring the action.

Which Cyclists Should I Look Out For?

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark) is a must- watch. Will he be able to go for three? He’s a likely favorite but not the only one. Tadej Pogačar (Slovenia) won in 2020 and 2021 and placed second in 2022 and 2023. The two will likely battle it out for the entirety of the 2024 edition, making a thrilling spectacle all fans will enjoy.

But don’t count others out! Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) is debuting at the 2024 Tour de France and a young up-and-comer to watch at 23 -years old. Another possible rising star is Canada’s Derek Gee. A few American riders will be in the mix, including Neilson Powless, Sean Quinn, and Matteo Jorgenson. Brothers Simon and Adam Yates (United Kingdom) will compete for different teams. France’s David Gaudu and Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz may also create a stir. Anything could happen, and all of these cyclists will give it their all the entire Tour.

Who will cycle to victory at the 2024 Tour de France? With so many changes and new additions, along with the backdrop of the Olympics as another opportunity to impress on the world stage, this is the race to watch.

US homes will be able to view live Tour de France coverage for an additional six years thanks to a renewed deal between NBC Sports, its streaming service Peacock and Amaury Sport Organisation, which owns the Tour de France.

The exclusive US broadcast rights, which will run 2024 to 2029, also include ASO’s Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Vuelta a España, Paris-Roubaix , Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift and several other sporting events. This keeps the world’s most prestigious cycling stage race with NBC Sports and Comcast since 2001 for the US market.

The current agreement with NBC Sports and ASO went through 2023 to broadcast the 110th Tour de France, July 1-23. In 2024, all stages of the Tour de France will be exclusively broadcast live in the US by Peacock, the video streaming service operated by NBCUniversal, with NBC Sports providing a simulcast for select stages and producing pre-race and post-race recap programming.

"We are delighted to be able to extend our long-term partnership with the NBCU group, which promotes the Tour de France and all the major A.S.O. sporting events to the American public on a cross-platform basis, including women's cycling such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift,” said Yann Le Moënner, CEO of ASO.

“The combined coverage via Peacock, which will show the entire races from the beginning to the end, and network television, will ensure everyone has access to the best of world cycling. NBC will remain the home of cycling in the United States for another six years, and in 2029 we will celebrate the 29th anniversary of a historic partnership.”

Gavin Mannion leads junior men with US National Team

USA Cycling National Team jersey

Former US pro cyclists Tanner Putt and Gavin Mannion have started new careers with the USA Cycling National Team. Putt serves as the Director of Road, while Mannion begins as the director of the junior men’s program.

“After spending the majority of my junior and U23 career with the USA Cycling National Team, I’m looking forward to being back with the program that gave so many opportunities as a young racer and now working together to build for the future,” Putt said on his Instagram feed.

Putt, a two-time U23 national champion on the road, worked most recently as the team director for the US-based domestic elite CS Velo Racing team. He raced eight years in the pro peloton, his last year in 2019 with Arapahoe-Hincapie p/b BMC.

Mannion hung up his racing kit with Human Powered Health at the start of the calendar, having raced as a junior with the U23 national team and then 12 full seasons as a pro. He won the 2018 Colorado Classic after a runner-up position in the GC at the 2017 Tour of Utah and added a pair of stage wins at the Le Tour de Savoie Mnt Blanc in 2020, all showcasing his climbing ability.

The US National Team will begin a European swing in June, looking to grab UCI points to earn spots for the World Championships. The first Nations Cup events on the schedule look to be Paris-Roubaix Juniors in April as well as Course de la Paix in early May.

Athens Twilight joins American Criterium Cup as series opener in April

Bryan Gomez of Best Buddies Racing edges Ty Magner of L39ION of Los Angeles for victory at 2022 Athens Twilight Criterium

One of the longest-running and most popular criterium events in the US, the Athens Orthopedic Clinic Twilight, has been added as the 10th race in the 2023 American Criterium Cup . The second-year series tapped the Athens, Georgia, race for its opening round Saturday, April 22.

The Athens Twilight, now in its 43rd year, also launches Speed Week, a series of seven criteriums contested in a span of nine days across the southeastern US.

“This is a bedrock race for athletes, and this race highlights the deep history of criterium racing in the South. The competition level, the crowd’s excitement and the venue never disappoint,” ACC Administrator Peter Discoe said about the Athens Twilight.

Across the year-long points competitions for men and women, the American Criterium Cup offers a total prize purse of $100,000. Teams and riders are also eligible for an additional $400,000 in prize money and support provided by individual races. The ACC is considering revisions to the points system for 2023 so that it is less likely for a single rider to sweep both the overall and sprint competitions.

Across the seven races in Speed Week, $95,000 was up for grabs last year for pro men and women, which included a $15,000 bonus purse for overall Speed Week individuals and teams. Organisers are expected to match the same prize purse this season.

Valley of the Sun stage race returns

Valley of the Sun stage race is a is a three-day USA Cycling event operated by White Mountain Road Club

The opening stage race on the USA Cycling calendar takes place February 17-19 in the sun-baked southeastern United States. On the heels of Super Bowl LVII and a stop by the PGA TOUR, top amateur and pro cyclists from North America are next to migrate to the greater Phoenix, Arizona area for the 31st edition of the John  Earley Memorial Valley of the Sun stage race.

The Landis Cyclery-Trek Time Trial opens competition on Friday, followed by a road race Saturday and a criterium on Sunday. The Valley of the Sun stage race serves as the state’s largest USAC development road race series for juniors.

The three-day event provides a way for teams to assess talent and get in some early-season racing among most training camps for domestic teams.

Three UCI Continental women’s teams are on the start line this year - Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY24, DNA Pro Cycling and Roxo Racing. Leading the way for the pro men’s field are Project Echelon Racing and L39ION of Los Angeles, both on the Continental level.

Can’t get enough of Le Tour? Check out the behind-the-scenes docuseries Tour de France: Unchained on Netflix . Each season covers the previous year’s tour by chronicling the experiences of top racers like Jasper Philipsen, Jonas Vingegaard, and Mark Cavendish.

2024 Tour de France TV schedule

This year’s Tour de France begins on June 29 in Italy before crossing into France on the fourth day. As usual, the 21-day route features a solid mix of flat to mountainous terrain. Two rest days break up the action before racers make their way to Nice—a departure from the usual Avenue des Champs-Élysées finish in Paris.

Data effective as of post date. Race times include Peacock’s live Tour de France Pre-Race Show coverage.

2024 Tour de France Femmes schedule

Just as the Summer Olympics wraps up in Paris, the Tour de France Femmes takes off from the Netherlands. This third edition of the women’s race features an eight-stage route that ends with a scenic climb in the Western Alpes.

Best Tour de France TV plans

A Peacock subscription is the best way to watch the Tour de France. Starting at $5.99 a month, the streaming service provides live and on-demand access to every stage of the men’s and women’s races. You’ll also get daily pre- and post-race studio coverage during the men’s competition, plus race highlights and rider interviews. During the 2024 race, episodes of Lance Armstrong’s THEMOVE podcast will also be available for on-demand access via Peacock.

If you’re only interested in Le Tour, you can cancel your Peacock subscription after the final stage. Otherwise, the service’s cycling coverage doesn’t stop there. Peacock hosts the Liège–Bastogne–Liège, Critérium du Dauphiné, Vuelta a España, and Paris Tours. It’s also home to the Paris Olympics , which features road race and track cycling events days after the Tour de France ends.

Fan verdict: At CableTV.com, we’ll be watching the 2024 Tour de France on Peacock because it’s the only platform in the U.S. that provides live coverage of every stage. This exclusivity is crucial for dedicated fans who want to experience the race in its entirety. Peacock also offers the advantage of full-stage replays, which is especially important because of the race’s early start times.

How can I watch the Tour de France for free?

† CableTV.com utilizes paid Amazon links. Amazon.com Price; $39.99 (as of 6/20/24 10:45 a.m. CT). Read full disclaimer .

The most convenient way to watch the Tour de France for free is by using an over-the-air (OTA) antenna to pick up your local NBC station. Unfortunately, NBC doesn’t show a lot of race coverage—only three Saturday presentations. But it never hurts having an antenna in your TV setup.

If you don’t have an antenna, most cost between $20.00 and $60.00. We recommend the Mohu Leaf 50 for its 60-mile range and slim design. But you’ll want to verify the distance of your nearest NBC station by entering your zip code into the Federal Communications Commission’s Reception Map Tool . That’ll help determine if you need a more robust antenna, which we feature on our Best OTA Antennas page.

Can I stream the Tour de France for free? You can watch select Tour de France stages for free using a live TV streaming trial . Otherwise, you can also catch free race recaps on NBC Sports’ YouTube channel .

The Tour de France is upon us, and cycling fans all across the US are gearing up. But with the race taking place across the Atlantic, how do you catch all the action? How to watch the Tour de France on NBC’s Peacock.

In the US, catching all the action of the Tour de France means tuning into NBC’s Peacock streaming service. Peacock has exclusive live coverage of every stage, letting you watch all the way to the triumphant finish.

According to Peacock’s website, you can currently sign up for a Peacock Premium plan at $5.99 a month or $59.99 per year , plus tax. This price allows you to watch on up to 3 devices at a time.

It is helpful to note that Peacock also streams the Olympic coverage, including Olympic cycling, in the US, so this is a good year to consider signing up as you can also watch the 2024 Paris Olympics on the same plan.

Visit the Peacock website here to sign up.

Why is the Tour de France only on Peacock?

Broadcasting rights for major sporting events are like territories on a map – different companies own the rights to show them in different countries. In the US, NBC Universal holds the exclusive broadcasting rights for the Tour de France for the United States through an agreement with the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO). This agreement grants NBCUniversal the right to air ASO races on their channels, primarily Peacock. Other races covered on Peacock include the Vuelta a España, Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Critérium du Dauphiné, and multiple prestigious classics and one-day races like Paris-Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, La Flèche Wallonne, and Amstel Gold Race.

Is the Tour de France available on Max through the B-R Sports package?

Eurosport (owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) holds the rights for broadcasting the Tour de France across many European countries, though not all. Although it shares the same parent company as Max, which also broadcasts cycling in the US, it is not able to broadcast the Tour de France in the States as that would infringe on NBC Universal’s exclusive rights. The Tour de France will not be available on Max for 2024.

Peacock’s in-depth coverage has everything for Tour de France superfans.

Peacock offers the most complete coverage of the Tour de France for American viewers. You can catch every stage live, with the option of a commercial-free World feed. They also have pre-race shows and on-demand content available through the Peacock interface to keep you in the cycling loop throughout the entire month of July. With the Peacock app, you can also stream the race on your phone or tablet.

Who are the Tour de France commentators on Peacock?

On Peacock, the main Tour de France feed’s commentary is led by the knowledgeable duo of Phil Ligett and Bob Roll. For decades, Phil’s voice has been synonymous with the Tour de France. His enthusiasm and cycling knowledge really bring the race to life to first-time (and long-time!) viewers. He’s covered an incredible 51 Tours de France, and his iconic commentary is a huge part of what makes watching the Tour de France special. Bob Roll, a former American cyclist himself, also brings his racing experience and charismatic personality to the booth. He’s known for his insightful analysis and colorful descriptions of the peloton’s action. Another regular in the booth and on the moto is Christian Vande Velde, another retired cyclist from the 2000s who complements the team with his tactical knowledge and perspective from on the ground.

Opting for the commercial-free World feed on Peacock switches you to Anthony McCrossan and Nico Roche in the booth. McCrossan, a seasoned commentator who has covered cycling for many years, provides in-depth knowledge and keeps the broadcast engaging. Nico Roche is a retired Irish professional rider who offers his unique insights from his racing background. These two give viewers well-rounded commentary, and many prefer to watch the World feed for their coverage, which is more cerebral in tone than the standard feed.

Are Tour de France replays available on Peacock?

Yes, you can watch replays of every single stage after it concludes. This means you can catch up on any stages you miss live, or even re-watch your favorite moments from the race. This is a great feature for US viewers who might struggle with the early start times for each stage.

You will be able to watch replays of each stage for approximately one year after their air dates.

You can also watch select Tour coverage outside of Peacock.

Peacock not for you? Some people prefer a lower-cost or free option for viewing the Tour de France. Fortunately, some options exist for that as well, although they are more limited.

This year, NBC will air two stages of the Tour de France, allowing viewers with a standard TV antenna to enjoy some of the race without needing a streaming subscription. The stages shown on TV are Stage 8 , which takes place on Saturday, July 6th, and Stage 14 , which takes place on Saturday, July 13th. The broadcasts may be restricted to certain times in your area, so check your local NBC schedule for the specific broadcast information.

Looking for a Tour de France fix without the time or money commitment? The NBC Sports YouTube channel has you covered. After each stage concludes, they upload extended highlights for free. These recaps, which range in duration from 30 minutes to an hour, condense the day’s key moments, letting you stay up-to-date without needing to pay for a Peacock subscription or watch for several hours. It’s a fantastic free option for folks who are new cycling viewers, who want to try out watching the Tour de France for the first time, or for those who are too busy to watch the full broadcasts. They can also be a fun way to relieve favorite stages from past years’ Tours. Check out the extended highlights from Stage 11 of the 2022 edition, the most exciting, decisive, and memorable stage of that year’s race!

When does Peacock Tour de France coverage start each day?

Don’t worry about missing the start time for a specific stage. We’ve got you covered. Here are all the start dates and times for each stage. Keep in mind that this year, because of the Olympics, the final stage will be a time trial held in Nice — however, this stage will still be held at a later start time, consistent with past years’ promenade stage in Paris.

This includes Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, top GC contenders the Tour de France this year, as well as standout potential stage winners such as Juan Ayuso, Mads Pedersen, and Derek Gee. It’s a fantastic way to build excitement and spot potential favorite riders before the grand spectacle arrives. Replays of this year’s race are also available to US viewers on Peacock.

Closing thoughts.

This is probably an objectionable, too-American comparison… but the Tour de France is like the Super Bowl of cycling. The excitement for its arrival is contagious! Witness the world’s best cyclists push their limits over brutal mountaintop finishes and thrilling sprints. This drama-filled spectacle of breathtaking scenery and athletic feats will have you glued to your screen. Now, with these streaming options in mind, you’re ready to watch every minute… even if it consumes your entire schedule for the month of July. Maybe the YouTube artist Killow, who makes cycling-inspired electronic music, captured that mood best in his Tour de France anthem, “Heavy Rotation”:

Are you ready to watch the Tour de France? Planning to catch all the stages this year, or just the ones you are looking forward to the most? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Happy viewing! ★

How to Watch the Tour de France

Easton Smith

It’s July, which means the Tour de France (or TDF) is kicking into gear. Watching the event live or on-demand is about as easy as coasting downhill on a Cannondale.

The Tour will be broadcast by NBC Sports, which means you can catch it on your local NBC affiliate, the USA Network, or the Peacock streaming service.

We think that Peacock offers the best viewing experience because you can watch live or on-demand on many different devices. The service costs just $5.99 a month (or $11.99 ad-free), and you can sign up and watch right now.

Here’s everything cycling fans need to know about watching the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes (which is also broadcast by NBC).

Quick guide to this article:

  • Tour de France channels
  • TDF on Peacock
  • TDF on cable and streaming
  • TDF with an HD antenna
  • Tour de France FAQ

What channel has the Tour de France?

Because NBC is the official broadcaster of the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes in the United States, the events will be available on NBCUniversal Media channels.

  • NBC: Local NBC affiliates will be streaming select stages of the race. Right now, it seems like the network will only be airing the first and the last stages of the race.
  • USA Network: The USA Network will be airing many stages of the race live, and others it will air late-night reruns.
  • Peacock: You can watch every stage of the race live on Peacock (with a Premium Monthly or Premium Plus plan). You can also stream reruns of stages that you don’t watch live. Peacock will also stream all of the Tour de France Femmes stages live.

All of the coverage will have commentary from NBC Sports anchors Phil Liggett (also known as the "voice of cycling") and Bob Roll.

What is the Tour de France route and schedule?

The best way to look at the Tour de France schedule is in map form! This is the official route with the dates of each stage indicated along the way.

A map of 2023 Tour de France route

You can see the full schedule for the Tour de France on the event’s website . The Tour de France Femmes schedule can also be found online here .

Our top recommendation: Watch the Tour de France on Peacock

The Peacock streaming app offers by far the easiest and most extensive Tour de France viewing experience. You can catch every stage of the race live, or watch them on-demand after they air.

Subscribers can watch Peacock on their phones, computers, tablets, smart TVs, and other devices. You can also link your subscription with services like Roku .

Peacock plans and prices

Peacock is a very affordable streaming service.

But to get the Tour de France you’ll need to get a Peacock Premium Monthly or Premium Plus plan.

The biggest benefit of going for the Premium Plus plan is that you can watch everything on the site ad-free, including the Tour de France.

But Peacock has a lot more than just cycling content. It’s the main streaming home for classic shows like Parks and Recreation and The Office . It’s where you can watch modern hits like Yellowstone and Poker Face . It’s also the exclusive streaming home for all Universal Movie releases , including big hits like the Jurassic Park and Harry Potter franchises.

Others ways to watch the Tour de France

You don’t have to subscribe to the Peacock app to watch the Tour de France. You can also get coverage of the cycling event's 21 stages by subscribing to a cable or live TV streaming service that has USA and NBC.

Other services with NBC Sports Tour de France coverage

Most live TV streaming services will get you access to USA Network and a local NBC affiliate. But we think these are the best options out there right now.

Each one of these services has its pros and cons, and all of them have a lot more content to offer than just the Tour de France.

Watch the Tour de France for free

There is one way to watch certain parts of the Tour de France for free. All you need is an indoor HD antenna and a TV.

With an antenna you should be able to pick up your local NBC affiliate. The channel will air at least the first and last stage of the Tour de France live. You won’t have to pay for a subscription or even sign up for anything (a rare thing in our modern world).

How to install an antenna

TV antennas are cheap and relatively easy to install. You can find a good one for under $30 online . Then just follow the instructions to attach the antenna to your TV and mount it near a window.

With a TV antenna you’ll get more than just NBC. You can watch local nightly news, sit-coms like The Simpsons (on Fox) and Abbot Elementary (ABC), and other sporting events, like the Super Bowl.

Recap: What’s the best way to watch the Tour de France?

The Tour de France is being broadcast by three different channels: NBC, USA Network, and Peacock. All three channels will have NBC Sports commentary.

By far the best and easiest way to watch is with the Peacock streaming app , which costs just $6–$12 a month (depending on which plan you go for). It will show every stage of the race live and let you watch on-demand after the race airs.

Hopefully we answered most of your questions in the sections above, but here’s a quick FAQ section to wrap up any loose ends.

Yes. You can watch the Tour de France on NBC or USA Network with a Youtube TV subscription .

No. You cannot watch the Tour de France or the Tour de France Femmes on ESPN or ESPN+ in the United States.

You can watch the Tour de France for $5.99 a month with a Peacock subscription. You can also watch on the USA Network or NBC with a cable or live TV subscription. If you have a TV antenna you can also catch certain stages of the race for free on your local NBC affiliate.

Slovenian Tadej Pogacar bids to join Chris Froome as three-peat Tour de France champions in the last 27 years (not including the stripped Lance Armstong ).

TOUR DE FRANCE: Standings | Stage by Stage

In 2020, Pogacar became at 21 the second-youngest winner in race history, after Henri Cornet in 1904, and the first man in more than 60 years to pedal in the yellow jersey for the first time on the final day of a Tour.

In 2021, Pogacar was more dominant, taking the lead on stage eight and holding it through the end of the Tour. He won by 5 minutes, 20 seconds, the largest gap since 2014.

Again, Team Jumbo-Visma should provide the biggest threat. That could be in the form of fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic , who was second at the 2020 Tour, or Dane Jonas Vingegaard , who was second at the 2021 Tour.

Two faces of recent Tours will be absent. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl left sprinter Mark Cavendish off the team, so he will miss a chance to break his tie with Eddy Merckx for the most career stage wins (34).

The team also omitted panache-filled Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe , who is still working his way back from major injuries suffered in an April crash.

Past Tour champions Geraint Thomas and Froome are also in the field.
