Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

Here’s what it’s like to take a Nile cruise in 2022

Egypt is nothing short of a miracle. Though the forbidding Sahara encroaches from every direction, the Nile River splashes a verdant green ribbon through the country, sometimes managing to push the desert sands only a few hundred feet back from the riverbank.

One of the world’s longest and most legendary rivers, the Nile travels more than 6500km (4100 miles) through five countries, but it’s most closely connected with Egypt. And indeed, so much of Egyptian history has unfolded along the Nile that nearly all of the country’s major cities and ancient tombs and temples are located along this lush life-giving artery.

The ancient Egyptians used the river as a highway, dispatching trade and military expeditions and toting statues of their gods between temples. The 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus famously called Egypt the “gift of the Nile,” and even now, millennia later, cruising the Nile is still the best way for travelers to see Egypt’s gifts for themselves.

Why are so many travelers talking about Egypt in 2022?

Nowhere else in the world is the past so intertwined with the present than in Egypt, and 2022 promises to be a blockbuster time to experience them both.

Lonely Planet named Egypt one of the top 10 countries to visit this year , and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open in November to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun , the famous golden pharaoh and “boy king.”

September marked 200 years since the Rosetta Stone was translated, which revealed the meanings of the hieroglyphs and recaptured knowledge that had been lost for centuries. New archaeological discoveries continue apace in Luxor, Saqqara and elsewhere that keep rewriting history.

Tourism hit a record high in Egypt in 2019 and was expected to grow even more in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Like many places, tourism in Egypt has now entered recovery mode, making the coming months a great – and still relatively quiet – time to visit. 

Some Nile cruise companies continued construction projects that have seen new boats launched on the river, including the August 2022 debut of the Viking Osiris , a brand new 82-passenger vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile.

Why you should take a Nile cruise when you visit Egypt

While cruises might get a bad rap elsewhere in the world, traveling by boat on the Nile is a time-honored tradition that stretches back to the pharaonic era.

Along the riverbanks, life carries on in the way that it has since time immemorial: mudbrick houses poke out from behind the foliage, children wave excitedly at passing ships, a lone man paddles a blue-painted canoe piled high with alfalfa for his hungry livestock, palm trees heavy with golden dates sag as they await the harvest.

In a fast-paced world, opportunities to simply sit back and watch life glide by are few and far between. Sitting outside on the Osiris ’s balcony traveling at the speed of the river, I felt like I was watching a slow travel TV show – at once both an outside spectator and also completely immersed in it.

In ancient times, mastering the river helped rulers unite the country, and most temples are built within easy reach of the water. Sure, Egypt’s modern-day road and rail network can transport you to these temples overland, but if you skip a cruise on the Nile, the magic of the journey will certainly be missing.

How to choose a Nile cruise itinerary

The vast majority of Nile cruises operate in both directions between Luxor and Aswan in southern Egypt, making stops in Edfu, Kom Ombo and sometimes other small towns.

Which Nile cruise you pick depends on the usual two travel constraints: your budget and your time. Certain boats sail only on certain days, and Nile cruises can be as short as three days, but more commonly last five days.

Most luxury cruises on the Nile, including Viking’s Nile cruises, require signing up for a full Egypt-wide itinerary that starts and ends in Cairo , an excellent option for first-time visitors.

With little signage at historic sites and prices always open to negotiation, Egypt is a tricky place for independent travel. Unless you want to spend your precious vacation time bargaining with taxi drivers and tour guides everywhere you go, it’s best to join a tour for your first visit and leave the logistics to someone else.

What I liked in particular about Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary is that it includes two unusual stops that aren’t standard ports of call for most Nile cruises. 

The ship travels north of Luxor to Qena for passengers to disembark and visit the gorgeous Temple of Hathor at Dendera , where the ceilings have recently been cleaned, exposing beautifully painted zodiac symbols and the warped body of the sky goddess Nut, who swallows the sun every night and gives birth to it the next morning. 

The boat also stops in Esna for the Temple of Khnum , a small but wonderfully preserved structure. Look up to spot the column-topping capitals, each of which has a colorfully decorated, unique bouquet of palm fronds, bunches of grapes, lotus flowers and papyrus shoots.

In Luxor, you’ll get private access to the show-stopping tomb of Nefertari – arguably the most beautiful burial site in the entire country (and certainly the most expensive at LE1400, about US$72) where nearly every square inch is painted in stunningly vibrant bas-reliefs – as well as the chance to see the stark dichotomy of Egypt’s landscapes from the sky in the basket of a gently drifting hot air balloon.

Tours of the temples and tombs are led by local expert Egyptologists who explain and translate the meanings of the hieroglyphs before your very eyes. 

A few companies offer Nile cruises from Cairo, but these sailings are rare, usually operating just once a month – if at all – and take significantly longer because of the distance involved. But you’ll get the chance to check out off-the-beaten-track tombs and temples between Cairo and Luxor that see few visitors.

What is it like on board the Viking Osiris ?

Decked out in a sleek Scandi color scheme of blond wood and blue textiles that are drenched in natural light thanks to huge floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the ship, the Viking Osiris is an oasis of calm that’s a treat to return to after a long and dusty day of exploring. 

The cruise ship has 41 cabins across three decks, plus two upper levels with an indoor/outdoor dining space with windows that fold away for al fresco evenings, a cozy bar and lounge with a resident piano player in the evenings, an infinity-style pool at the back of the boat and a sun deck for days of lazy lounging.

Travelers can check out books from the on-board library’s exquisite collection to read up on Egyptian history on their voyage.

The guest rooms are surprisingly spacious, with comfy hotel-like beds, plenty of wardrobe and storage space, and good-sized bathrooms. Many staterooms come with balconies.

The ship is partially powered by solar panels, and you can see how much electricity is being generated by the sun as well as the carbon dioxide savings on a screen inside.

What travelers should know before visiting Egypt

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Egypt , which you can get on arrival at the airport or apply for online in advance if you’d rather skip the line. The cost of a single-entry Egyptian tourist visa is USD$25, payable in cash at the airport or by card online.

Planning Your Nile Cruise in Egypt

The best Nile River cruise will take you from Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor. Luxor is located in the south of Egypt and is one of the most historic cities in the country. 

A typical Nile cruise will depart from Luxor, cruise to Aswan, and then return to Luxor at the end of the trip. The trip length varies depending on the cruise, but you’ll want a minimum of four days to really experience it.

The most extensive cruises, though, will usually take seven days and will give you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the sun and the scenery.

You sleep on the boat during the cruise of course, and then you have the option each day to take tours and trips to the nearby attractions, as not all the best sights are always found right by the river. 

For this reason, it’s important to pick the right company, right itinerary and the right ship for you. 

Different Types of Cruises on the Nile

You need to decide how long you want to spend cruising along the Nile, but you also need to consider your budget and what level of comfort you want to travel in. 

The most luxurious ships will handle all your travel needs and you can spend a fortune and enjoy all the trappings of a five-star hotel while you cruise from Luxor to Aswan. 

Alternatively, you can join budget-minded cruises, where most things are paid for at an extra cost and where your cabin will be basic, and no thrills. 

Many ships will have different cabin options too, and you can pay to upgrade your obstructed view to a full balcony, or you can upgrade from a basic cabin to a luxurious suite.

When looking at the price, check what’s actually included on the cruise too. It might seem like a cheap deal, but do you then need to pay extra for transfers to and from the boat?

Is the transport to archeological sites from the river also included? Are there guides on board and are there guides on the day trips? Look at the itinerary and the inclusions thoroughly before making a final decision.

Hot Tip: Be sure to clarify if entrance fees are included, or not. These will add up fast and need to be budgeted for if not included.

Know Before You Go

Cruising the Nile between Luxor and Aswan is a fantastic way to see some of the best that Egypt has to offer. However, there are a couple things you should know before you go.

It’s important to manage expectations , especially if you have the conception that few people are visiting Egypt right now. If you dream of having temples to yourself, you have another thing coming if you choose to cruise.

• Cruise boats move together: This means that you’ll be sailing on an itinerary that is exactly the same as many other cruise boats. You’ll be on the same schedule, which means all of the passengers, from all of these ships, will be visiting the sites at the same time.
• Temples will be very crowded: As a result, you are going to experience hoards of people at the temples. This was the most shocking thing about our Nile cruise. Tourism is, in fact, still down in Egypt but this experience will have you thinking otherwise.
• Touts will be aggressive for sales: This is part of the Egyptian experience and should be taken lightly. That said, when you’re part of the hoards that move with the cruise ships, expect the touts to desperately bother you for sales. They are more aggressive with cruise ship passengers because once you are all back on board, they won’t see many other visitors for the duration of the day. Sad but true.

Best Time to Cruise on the Nile

Egypt has a hot climate all through the year, so you can expect great weather no matter when you choose to travel.

The summers though can be really hot, this is the middle of North Africa after all, and if you’re not used to the oppressive heat and humidity you might want to opt to travel in winter.

An Egyptian winter is never cold, at least during the day, and temperatures will average around 20 degrees Celsius from November through to March. The nights can be cold though, especially if you travel into the desert. 

Winter is high season in Egypt, and the busiest time of the year will be December and January, especially during the European school holidays.

Prices are at their highest and availability can be low, so ensure you book in advance to get the best deals for your Nile River Cruise. 

If you can brave the summer sunshine and heat, when temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, then you’ll save yourself a great deal of money on flights and accommodation.

The shoulder seasons, spring and fall, are also great weather-wise and will give you the chance to save money and escape the crowds as well.

What to Take With You 

You’ll need to check what’s included on your cruise and what style of travel you’ll be journeying in budget or luxury. Then you can start to organize your packing list. 

There are a few things that you’ll need to bring through, regardless. For starters, ensure that you’ve got light clothes for the day, as you’ll be out exploring a lot.

You’ll also want comfortable outfits for when you’re sunning yourself and relaxing on the deck of the ship. 

You’ll need a sun hat and sunscreen, even in winter, and you might want to make sure you pack swimwear too, and a towel. 

And of course, you’ll need your camera to take photographs of what’s going to be an epic Nile River cruise from Luxor to Aswan.

Nile Cruise Itinerary Options

Regardless of whether your Nile cruise starts in Luxor or Aswan, you’ll need to arrange transport to get here. Both cities have an international airport, with connections to a select few destinations in Europe and the Middle East .

You can fly in via Cairo or Hurghada on domestic flights too if you are exploring more of Egypt prior to joining your cruise in Egypt. 

If you’re trying to keep costs down or after more of an adventure then you can also travel overland from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan.

There are sleeper trains that take around 10 hours to travel from Cairo to Luxor, 13 hours from Cairo to Aswan and are perfectly comfortable. 

Hardier travelers can also opt for either the bus or the day train, both of which can be significantly cheaper although much less comfortable than booking a sleeper cabin. They are also much slower.

Alternatively, you may book your Nile cruise as part of a tour which will then include your transport to the start of the cruise based on your itinerary.

Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise

Nile cruises that are booked starting in Luxor to Aswan offer a minimum itinerary of 5 days and 4 nights. This is due to your cruise traveling against the very strong river currents.

TYPICAL LUXOR TO ASWAN ITINERARY

• Day 1: Arrive in Luxor and tour the East Bank
• Day 2: Luxor West Bank & Valley of the Kings
• Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo
• Day 4: Aswan arrival, optional day trip to Abu Simbel
• Day 5: Aswan touring and departure

The itineraries typically include 2 full days of touring both the east and west bank of the Nile. This will include the east bank temples of Karnak and Luxor, as well as the west bank Valley of the Kings.

You’ll start sailing at the end of a full day on the west bank, enjoying sunset on the river and a nice sleep before waking up near Edfu. You’ll spend the morning touring this temple before setting sail at lunch time.

The afternoon will be spent relaxing, enjoying the pool if your ship has one and taking in the local river side life before arriving at Kom Ombo just as the sun starts to set.

Back on board, you’ll enjoy a themed dinner before heading to bed. You’ll wake up the next morning in Aswan – perhaps very early if you want to take the day trip to Abu Simbel.

The day will be spent touring Aswan, taking a felucca ride and maybe even heading to the Nubian Village up the river. You’ll enjoy another themed dinner and some entertainment on the ship on your last night.

The last day of your Nile cruise will visit some popular sights around Aswan, including Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and Aswan High Dam. You’ll then be taken to the airport to continue your Egypt itinerary.

Something worth noting, you may book a Nile cruise package that is more than the typical 5 day/4 nights that I have outlined above. This doesn’t mean you’ll spend more time on the river.

This means you will have extra days in either Luxor, Aswan or both. But not more time actually cruising. That is, unless you book a return cruise. If that is the case, you’ll sail Luxor to Aswan to Luxor, with the same stops in reverse.

Aswan to Luxor Nile Cruise

Nile cruises that are booked starting in Aswan to Luxor offer a minimum itinerary of 4 days and 3 nights. This is due to your cruise traveling with the very strong river currents.

TYPICAL ASWAN TO LUXOR ITINERARY

• Day 1: Arrive in Aswan and tour city sites
• Day 2: Edfu and Kom Ombo
• Day 3: Luxor arrival & East Bank
• Day 4: Luxor tour West Bank & Valley of the Kings, departure

Despite losing a whole day and night in this direction, you don’t actually see less. The time that it takes to get between stops once you are on the cruise is considerably faster in this direction.

When starting here, you’re essentially just doing the itinerary in reverse. Day one, you’ll arrive to Aswan and spend the afternoon touring the Aswan High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple.

The exception is that there will not be time to visit Abu Simbel in your cruise itinerary unless you arrive early into Aswan and do it on your own.

In the morning you’ll visit Kom Ombo, have lunch onboard and then visit Edfu in the afternoon. You’ll then set sail to Luxor in the evening.

Arriving overnight, you’ll have the option to get up early for a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, before spending the entire day touring the west bank.

You’ll enjoy dinner and sleep on the ship, waking up on the final day to tour both Karnak and Luxor Temples on the east bank. You’ll then head to the airport to continue your travels in Egypt.

As with the Luxor to Aswan itinerary, you will have the option of booking a trip that includes Aswan to Luxor to Aswan, for a longer cruise.

Popular Stops on a Nile River Cruise

Luxor .

Luxor is where your cruise will begin and where it will end too. Known to the ancients as Thebes this was the historic center of many Ancient Egyptian Kingdoms.

Often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, this is an unmissable destination for anyone with even a fleeting interest in Archeology or Egyptology. Visit the Luxor Museum, the Mummification Museum, and the Luxor Temple. 

Save plenty of time to explore Karnak too, an epic temple complex that’s right in the center of Luxor.

The Valley of the Kings 

Located on the west bank of the Nile River, just a short journey from Luxor is the iconic Valley of the Kings . 

This beautiful natural gorge is where the Egyptian Kings of old had their lavish tombs and monuments built. 

It’s also where the infamous tomb of Tutankhamen was found and then opened, an event that really kicked off a newfound love across the world for Egyptology in the 1920s.

Luxor and Aswan aside, Edfu is hands down my favorite stop on a Nile cruise. This temple is off the beaten path, seeing almost no land traffic. Most of its visitors come from the Nile river cruises.

This doesn’t mean you’ll find an empty temple, quite to the contrary actually, as all of the river cruise boats take the same schedule. This means they all arrive in places at the same time.

That aside, this temple is fascinating and worth exploring. Your guides will point out the best reliefs and tell you the history of the site. My challenge to you, however, is to look really hard and find this amazing staircase.

We found it on our first trip to Egypt in 2015 and the main mission on our last visit was to find it again. I won’t lie, we had to search hard, it’s not easy to find. So, good luck!

Itineraries will usually take cruisers along the river to Esna, where they’ll have their first overnight stop on the river outside of Luxor. 

The major highlight of this small city, is the Temple of Khnum, a lavish temple dedicated to the old gods of Egypt. 

Carry on along the river and you’ll soon reach another important temple, at Kom Ombo. Unlike most of the temples, you’ll see along the river, this isn’t an Ancient Egyptian structure, but a temple dating back to the Roman era.

Kom Ombo was constructed around 100 BC and is in a very distinct style to the other Ancient Egyptian temples.

Aswan is the final destination for most Nile River cruises in Egypt because Aswan is also the last city before you reach the Sudanese border.

Aswan is home to some excellent museums and archaeological sites, including the detailed Nubian Museum which takes visitors through the unique heritage and history of Nubian culture which prevailed across the region.

Abu Simbel Temple

Many tours will give you the added option of taking a day trip to the Abu Simbel Temples, which are literally on the border with Sudan, and the last destination you can visit going south in Egypt. 

Built around 1200 BC, these incredible temples were carved from the rock by the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II.

From Aswan, it’s a long trip through the desert in the early morning hours to the Abu Simbel Temples, but it’s well worth any extra costs and time.

Wildlife on the River Nile

One of the best reasons to join a Nile River cruise is for wildlife spotting opportunities. In comparison to the seemingly barren deserts that surround the river, the Nile is a verdant, green oasis and it attracts all sorts of animals to its banks. 

As you sit back on the deck and watch the scenery slowly cruise past, you might spot Nile Crocodiles hiding in the reeds.

These were well known to the Ancient Egyptians and you might even find a few mummified crocodiles on display in the museum in Luxor.

The skies will be filled with birds, while on the banks and in the water you’ll also see hippos and monkeys and many more species too.

Cruising the River Nile: Pros, Cons, and Recommendations

Traditionally, a Nile cruise was considered the centerpiece of an Egyptian vacation, evoking romantic images of idyllic days spent drifting in luxury between the country's ancient sights . In Victorian times, a Nile cruise was the only way to see some of Egypt 's most outstanding ancient temples. Modern visitors have more options available to them; and while Nile cruises are still popular, some find themselves put off by the idea of being confined on a boat for the majority of their vacation. The river is much busier now than it was in the past, and with more than 200 cruise boats plying their trade, there are lines to get through the locks and to dock at each disembarkation point. 

Let's weigh the pros and cons of a Nile cruise so that you can decide whether or not it's a good fit for your visit to Egypt. 

What to Expect

Most Nile cruises start in Luxor and visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in Aswan. Other itineraries fly directly to Aswan and work their way north down the Nile to the same sights. Most cruises will last at least four nights. There are many different vessels to choose from, ranging from traditional paddle steamers (best suited to those that favor history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). Your budget and personal preferences will determine which cruise you choose, although opting for a cabin with air-conditioning is advised during the scorching summer months .

Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will guide your group around the ancient sights you visit along the way. Days start early to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon; and as such, all cruises tend to operate on a similar schedule (which can lead to overcrowding at the docking sites and at the temples themselves). Modern vessels typically have a swimming pool so that you can cool off after your morning explorations; while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows or themed dress-up evenings. Food on board is usually excellent, ranging from generous buffets to set dinner menus. Make sure to find out what's included before choosing your operator.

Despite the changes brought about by the progression of time, a Nile river cruise is still one of the most popular ways to see Egypt's ancient sights. Part of that is tradition, and part of it is practicality; after all, many of the most famous sites are located directly on the river, making a cruise the easiest way to travel between them. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. During the day, the rural scenes you'll see whilst traveling from place to place have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite the early morning starts (and depending on which vessel you choose), cruises can also be wonderfully relaxing. While sailing, you'll be able to get a sense of the country without having to deal firsthand with the chaotic roads, busy city streets, and persistent hawkers for which Egypt is famous. Although the sites you'll visit along the way are inevitably crowded, arriving in a large group can make some travelers feel more comfortable. You'll also benefit from the knowledge of an expert guide, both in terms of navigating the touts and in terms of understanding the fascinating history of the temples themselves.

For many visitors, the main drawback of a Nile cruise is not the influx of vessels, nor the crowding at the sites (the latter is unavoidable whether you visit them as part of a cruise or not). The main disadvantage is the inflexibility of a cruise; the fact that you have to operate on a set schedule that dictates when you visit a temple, how long you get to spend there, and what you see whilst you're there. If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring the untold wonders of the temple complexes at Luxor, for example, you may wish to travel there independently or with a land-based guide.

These days, overland tours are equally easy to arrange and allow for more flexibility. You can even hire a car or take public transport if you don't want to be part of an organized tour at all. Many cruise itineraries focus solely on the most popular temples, leaving out worthwhile smaller sights like Abydos and Dendera. Alternatively if your time in Egypt is limited, you may prefer to focus on one or two sights rather than spending much of your vacation in transit on the river. The sheer amount of time spent on board can also be a drawback if you're traveling with young children, or if you find out too late that you don't enjoy the company of your fellow cruise mates.

Best Traditional

Audley Travel's five-night itineraries aboard the Steam Ship Sudan offer the last word in exclusivity and Victorian-era refinement. The steamship, which was constructed in 1885 for King Fouad, was the direct inspiration for Agatha Christie's famous novel Death on the Nile and is still decorated in flawless Belle Epoque style. In each of its 18 cabins and five suites, period antiques range from brass beds to vintage telephones. And although the ship is now operated by a hybrid diesel/steam engine for optimum quietness, you can still view the original pistons and paddle wheels. Dining aboard the Steam Ship Sudan includes generous buffet breakfasts and lunches and stately four-course dinners.

Best Luxury

Despite its traditional exterior, the  Oberoi Philae  offers 22 cabins and suites decorated in the same style you might expect from a contemporary 5-star hotel. Each one includes a pillow-top mattress, high-speed WiFi, a multi-pressure shower, and 24-hour butler service. If you're feeling particularly decadent, splurge on a suite with its own private terrace, complete with a sun lounger and heated whirlpool tub. There are two restaurants to choose from, one for gourmet international cuisine, the other for light meals and beverages at the edge of the ship's temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool. Other luxuries range from a movie theater and dance floor to a salon and spa treatment rooms.

Best Budget

Budget travelers should consider booking a felucca cruise like the ones offered by On The Go Tours . Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats, the like of which have plied their trade on the Nile for centuries. They are wind-powered and as such have a more fluid itinerary; while their smaller size allows them to dock at places of interest that don't have the infrastructure for larger cruise ships. There is no luxury on a felucca cruise; you will sleep on deck in a sleeping bag that you bring with you; the food is basic and amenities are limited to a toilet and shower on the accompanying support boat. However, the experience is probably one of the most authentic (and certainly the cheapest) on the river.

Best for Families

Being trapped on a boat for an extended period of time can be challenging for families, especially if they include young children. This 10-day itinerary from Abercrombie & Kent gives you the best of both worlds with some land-based adventures in addition to a four-night Nile cruise. Your journey from Luxor to Aswan aboard Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is accompanied by an A&K Child Activity Coordinator whose job it is to keep your little ones entertained en route. The itinerary also includes plenty of interactive, hands-on fun that doubles as cultural education, from felucca sailing trips to camel rides, henna painting, and bread baking. A themed dinner and onboard costume party lets the kids dress up in traditional robes known as galabeyas .

Ultimately, whether or not a Nile cruise is the right choice for you depends on your personal preferences. If you like the idea of a cruise , the sheer variety of available options means that you're likely to find a vessel and/or operator to suit your needs. If the drawbacks listed above sound like deal-breakers for you, you're better off saving your money and organizing an alternative option instead.

• Day 4: Visit the landmarks of Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo on a full-day tour. Highlights include the Suspended Church , and Abu Serga , where the Holy Family hid while fleeing Israel. Discover the Coptic Museum, the Mosque, and the Madrasa of Sultan Hassan , renowned for its sweeping views of the city. Board the overnight train to Aswan.
• Day 5: Arrive in Aswan and visit the Aswan Dam and the Temple of Philae . Transfer to your cruise ship and spend the afternoon at leisure.
• Day 6: After morning breakfast, you will explore Abu Simbel , home to some of the most historically important temples in the world. Toward evening you will sail to Kom Ombo .
• Day 7: Discover the unusual double temple at Kom Ombo , then continue your Nile cruise to visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu . Sail to Luxor in the evening.
• Day 8: Head to Luxor’s Western Shores and enjoy guided tours of the Valley of the Kings , the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon .
• Day 9: Explore the East Bank of Luxor and visit the Temple of Karnak , Luxor Temple and a local market before transferring to Luxor airport for your flight back to Cairo .

When is the best time to take a Nile cruise?

The best time to visit the Nile is between October and April , when temperatures are cooler and better for visiting the temples. Traveling during the peak summer months between June and August is not recommended because of the scorching heat in Luxor and Aswan.

Travel tips

• Check if you need a visa to travel to Egypt ; you can often buy them online.
• Bring some cash for entrance to attractions or for souvenirs or tips.
• Pack cool clothes to combat the heat and keep yourself hydrated during excursions.
• Dress decently when visiting religious sites such as mosques.
• Drink only bottled water to avoid stomachaches.
• Some cruises hold a Galabeya festival where guests can dress up in traditional clothes: clothes can be purchased on board or at local markets at most stops.

This is the hard part, narrowing down the seemingly endless options of cruises and tours.

How to Choose the Best Nile Cruise

When I started planning our trip to Egypt, to say I was overwhelmed by all the Nile River cruise options would be an understatement. There are so many travel agencies and cruise lines and itineraries, how am I supposed to narrow it all down?

After hours and hours of googling, I realized most of the options actually seemed very similar. And because I couldn’t really tell what the big differences were, it made it even more difficult. Talk about decision paralysis.

Since there are way too many options, the key is to figure out exactly what you want to do and look for cruises that fit those perimeters until you find your perfect Nile cruise.

Establish Your Budget

One easy way to narrow down the seemingly endless Nile Cruise options is to decide how much you are willing to spend. If you’re on a tight budget don’t worry, there are options for every kind of spender from frugal to luxurious.

How much does a Nile Cruise cost?

Fortunately, Nile River cruises range drastically in price point . Standard Cruises start around $350 while the Luxury Cruises can go up to $1700, and everything in between.

Some cruises include entry to all the sites in their initial pricing, but some do not. If the cruise does not include this, add an extra $100 or so to estimate what you will actually pay. Our tour package also gave us the option to add the hot air balloon in Luxor for an additional $80.

All cruises are 5 star accommodations, meaning guests are catered to at the highest level. They also include all your meals on the boat , and often an afternoon snack with tea and coffee. Drinks such as beer, wine, and water cost extra and are added to your tab to be paid at the end of the cruise, along with any tips for the staff. WIFI is also not included on the boat but you can pay per gig at reception.

To save money, consider stocking up on alcohol beforehand at the Duty Free in the airport in Aswan. They aren’t really strict about bringing outside beverages onto the ship. Water is another thing you can buy outside the ship to save a little money. There is usually even a guy on the street just before you get on the cruise selling waters for slightly cheaper.

Remember to account for tipping when considering your budget as well. It is expected to tip drivers, cruise staff, and your tour guide. Most tour guides will help you navigate the appropriate amounts for each of these scenarios.

Another way to save money is by booking through a site like Viator instead of the official cruise agencies. We were able to get a Deluxe cruise on Viator for the same price as a Standard on the cruise’s website.

Choose a Route

The majority of the Nile River cruises start in Aswan and travel north to Luxor. This popular route takes 3 nights and 4 days. I recommend this option because you get to see a ton of sites in a short amount of time and the itinerary keeps topping itself as you get closer to Luxor, where Karnak is the grand finale.

However there are also some that go the opposite way, which adds an extra day (4 nights, 5 days). If you really want to start in Luxor and end in Aswan, it is important to find those specific cruises as they are less common.

There are also even longer 5 day or 8 day cruises traveling north if you have the extra time. You can even cruise all the way up to Cairo! It really depends on the rest of your trip’s itinerary and what you can reasonably accomplish in that time .

Define Your Desired Quality

Nile River cruises are offered in four different tiers: Standard, Deluxe, Ultra Deluxe, and Luxury . After looking at hundreds of cruises online, I honestly had a hard time seeing a huge difference between them. All of the cruises look a bit dated and traditional, and all have similar amenities such a bar, roof deck, gift shop, and pool.

In person, the subtle differences are a bit more noticeable. I walked through several cruises when we docked, and although some were definitely nicer than others, I’m not sure what tier each of them fell into.

Quality of food could be another differentiator between tiers, but I am only speculating. We stayed on a Deluxe cruise and I thought the food was great.

All levels of cruises still boast 5 star accommodations and stop at the same sites along the journey.

Select an Itinerary

Selecting the best Nile Cruise is not only which boat you want to stay on, but what sites and tours you want. All tours make the same core stops : High Dam, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo, Luxor Temple, Temple of Hatshepsut, Valley of the Kings, and Karnak.

But there are some additional activities to consider to really personalize your cruise experience. Some of these other options include Abu Simbel, hot air balloon over Luxor, Valley of the Queens, and the Karnak Sound and Light show.

There is also the option to have a private guide or group tour. The group tour will obviously be the cheaper option and you can meet new people. But the private guide can really personalize your tour and give you his full attention.

Typical Itinerary from Aswan to Luxor

Day 1: High Dam and Philae Temple

Day 2: Abu Simbel (optional) and Kom Ombo

Day 3: Edfu Temple, Karnak and Luxor Temple

Day 4: Hot air balloon (optional), Colossi of Memnon, Temple of Hatshepsut and Valley of the Kings

Shop Around

There are tons of cruises and tour companies offering essentially the same thing. There’s no sense in settling or paying a lot of money . Shop around until you find exactly what you want; and if you don’t know what you want, you can’t really go wrong with any of them.

Best Egypt Nile Cruise Options – Are They Worth It?

Drifting along Egypt’s legendary river has been romanticised to such an extent that it feels sacrilegious to not take a cruise. I did consider cutting it out but was vetoed by the husband.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A NILE RIVER CRUISE

Standard Nile river cruises ply in both directions, departing from Aswan or Luxor and returning the same way. Most ships offer three to four night itineraries that include the most important sites in Aswan & Luxor as well as Kom Ombo, Edfu & Esna along the way. They are all inclusive and cover all meals and standard beverages. A few offer two night itineraries.

The sailing is minimal, limited to a few hours on the first couple of days. It is anchored all night, and all day once in Luxor/Aswan until the next departure. Departures are staggered to avoid congestion on the route. (Be sure to tally your flights with exact day of departure).

THE BEST EGYPT NILE CRUISE BOATS

‘Best’ is relative. If you have deep enough pockets, high end boats like the  Oberoi Zahra  and the  Sanctuary Sun Boats  are top of the line. In the mid range,  Oberoi Philae ,  M S Mayfair  and the  Movenpick boats  are among the best rated.

Here’s a list  with some newer boats.

We chose the Oberoi Philae since it is part of one of the best hotel chains in India and we were able to get a good deal from their India office. It lived up to the high Oberoi service standards but the boat was much in need of refurbishment at the time and the food as well as the ‘Egyptologist’ allotted to our group was sub par. It has since been completely revamped and is probably as stellar as its pricier sister ship.

Dahabiyas (twin-sailed river yacht) and steam ships “bring turn-of-the-century-travel on the Nile back to life.” They are slower and their smaller size allows docking at villages the larger boats cannot reach. So you get a more authentic, immersive experience. The slower speeds result in longer itineraries, however, and the more ‘comfortable’ boats might not be much cheaper than the regular cruises. Is a nile cruise worth it.

That depends a lot on one’s interests, travelling style and budget.

For those unwilling to take on the logistics of inter-city travel and daily excursions, a cruise is the ideal way to ‘do’ this part of Egypt. Everything is taken care of and one is living the age old romance of river travel that was the only means of transport up until a few decades ago.

Experienced travellers might seek more than romance, however. The group excursions can feel restrictive after a point. There is an option to hire private guides but that drives up prices further.

With hindsight, I recommend and would personally opt for overland travel if I were to return. Especially considering one can organise private transfers and sightseeing for less than the cost of a well reviewed cruise.

ORIGINAL LONG NILE CRUISE

A couple of high end companies offer cruises from Cairo all the way to Aswan or vice versa.  Movenpick MS Darakum  &  Steigenberger Royale  are the two main vessels plying this route. Termed the ‘Long Cruise’ the two week itineraries cover more sites along the way including Abydos and Dendera. Ideal for travellers who do not have the time or inclination to plan themselves. They don’t operate through the year, however, and chances of cancellations due to lack of demand might be high. Check directly with the respective companies or your local provider if interested. Lake nasser cruise.

Few people consider taking the Lake Nasser cruise from Aswan to Abu Simbel or in reverse. I find the idea of approaching Abu Simbel from the lake very appealing.

The intimate La Flaneuse du Nil,  Movenpick MS Prince Abbas  &  Steigenberger Omar El Khayam  depart every Monday from Aswan and return on Fridays from Abu Simbel.

With the possibility of flying from Cairo to Abu Simbel (via Aswan), taking the 3 night Nasser Lake cruise option to return to Aswan might be a great way to maximise time in Abu Simbel. It would easily fit into the ten day itinerary above. Dates – and budget – permitting.

Kom Ombo is just a small stop, but the temple is definitely worth a visit. It’s an interesting temple because it is dedicated to two different ancient Egyptian gods; Horus the falcon god and Sobek the crocodile god. Even though it is one temple, it has two of everything: entrances, halls, courts, and sanctuaries.

Another must-see in Kom Ombo is the crocodile museum. Perhaps you saw the human mummies in the museum in Egypt, but here you can see 22 mummies of crocodiles. You’ll even get to see some crocodile coffins- bet you haven’t seen one of those before!

Aswan , in southern Egypt, will likely be the start or end point of your Nile cruise depending on which direction you choose to go. It is also possible to do a longer Nile cruise that starts in Cairo and ends in Aswan, however, these are not as popular due to how long they are. How long do you want to cruise for.

One of the first thing you will want to determine is how long you want to cruise for. Do you only have a couple of days? Or do you have a week? Cruises vary in length, even though go along the same route.

Edfu – on the west bank of the Nile in Egypt – is a small city dating back to 3000BC. Today, its main attraction is the Temple of Horus. Practice your haggling skills at the row of street stalls lining the entrance, before stepping through the 36-metre-high gateway to get inside the complex. This place was buried in desert sand around 200 years ago, which helped keep everything intact – including the roof. Once you’re there, don’t miss its chapel. It’s decorated with colourful inscriptions depicting the birth of Horus – a god with the body of a man and the head of a falcon.

This trip takes you to the Temple of Horus – Edfu’s most famous landmark, and the largest and most intact pharaonic temple in Egypt. When you arrive, you can practice your haggling skills with the traders who line the entrance with their street stalls before you step through the 36-metre-high gateway and into the complex. Aswan is Egypt’s southernmost city, and once acted as a gateway into Ancient Egypt. Along with well-preserved archaeological sites, Aswan’s also home to botanical gardens and museums dedicated to the history of the River Nile and Ancient Egypt. The gardens are pitched on an island that floats in the middle of the River Nile, so it’s the perfect place to go if you fancy escaping the city. For all things Ancient Egypt head to the Nubian Museum – it’s home to a haul of artefacts that will help you piece together thousands of years of Egyptian history. Or, if you fancy heading outside of the city, you can take off on a trip to the temples in Abu Simbel. Looking at its solid structure you’d never know it, but this temple complex once stood in Aswan. It was moved to higher ground after the Aswan High Dam was built, to save it from being flooded.

You’ll have a couple of experiences on this Nubian village tour and boat trip in Aswan. It all starts with a short motorboat ride to a traditional Nubian village that’s set on its own island. First, there’s a guided a tour of the village, which is filled with spice shops, riverside cafés and rainbow-hued houses that bring it to life. You’ll get to mingle with some of the friendly locals and hear their native language, Nuba, before you set off for the second part of your trip – a felucca ride along the Nile. These traditional, canvas-sailed boats have been part of the furniture here for yonks, and you’ll be sable to sit back and take in the views along the riverbank while you glide along. You’ll also have a certified Egyptologist with you for the whole tour, who’ll be on hand to point out the sights and answer any lingering questions.

Kom Ombo is a firm favourite with history buffs, who flock here to see the town’s famous temple, which has been standing for more than 2000 years. It’s pretty unique, too, as it’s a double temple – after the Ancient Egyptians had moved on, the Romans came in and added an extension and much of it’s still standing. The original temple was dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile God, and next door, you can take a wander around a museum where mummified crocs are on display.

On this tour, you’ll head to Kom Ombo’s biggest sight, which has a couple of unique hallmarks. Firstly, it’s a double temple, so it’s dedicated to two gods instead of one, and secondly, everything’s perfectly symmetrical along its main axis, which is also pretty uncommon among Egypt’s ancient temples. You’ll hear more about these quirks and plenty of other details from the certified Egyptologist who’ll guide you around all the temple’s courts, halls and sanctuaries, and point out the riverside spot where sacred crocs used to bask in the sun. Tui Al Horeya Cabins

Tui Al Horeya Cabins are 15m² as standard and they come with twin beds and a French balcony. All the standard features are included, too, including air-conditioning, a TV, a private bathroom with a shower and a hairdryer, a safety deposit box, a minibar, and tea and coffee making facilities. Please be aware, these images are for illustrative purposes only. The final cabins allocated may differ slightly in design, layout and decor but will all be satisfactory.

You can stay on top of your workout routine at the wellness area, which comes complete with fitness equipment and a space for exercise classes. If you want to take things a little easier, you can treat yourself to a massage. The top deck’s split into different zones for relaxation and activities. There’s a pool and a couple of hot tubs to dip in, with plenty of sun loungers around them to chill out on. And there’s a bar and a restaurant up here, too.

Dining & Bars

The main restaurant’s got a bright, modern feel to it, and it’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a mix of buffet and à la carte options to choose from. You can dine out in the open at this top deck eatery. It’s open for light bites at lunch, then dinner’s an à la carte affair, which you’ll need to reserve a table for. But don’t worry, it’s still part of your all-inclusive package. The light and contemporary lounge is the ship’s main bar, and hosts the nightly entertainment which ranges from local acts to live music, quizzes and films.

I think you will have more time to see more sites. And there's plenty to see.

If you overland between the two cities by car , you can stop at all three "standard tour" temples mentioned by #1.

Typically the driver will arrange his arrivals at these sites to "miss" the crowds touring from cruise ships.

And allow some flexibility on the time at each site.

For all the reasons set out in the above replies, I also suggest the Hotels option. I would add that organising your own sightseeing also allows you to better control the efforts of guides and drivers to steer you into shops, markets, restaurants etc where they get commissions on what you buy. If, for example, you don’t want to go shopping, this can be very annoying and a real time waster.

You can travel between the two cities by train but then you don’t really get the opportunity to visit any of the sites as none of them are near to train stations. There are also public buses but these require a bit of understanding of the local transport system and they can also be a bit of a culture shock for some tourists. The buses are ideal, however, for those on a very strict budget as prices are low. I only mention both as further options …

Regarding drivers and guides there is a sticky post at the top of the main Egypt Forum with recommendations from fellow travellers for individuals that you can contact. There are also local and national agencies in Aswan and Luxor (and Cairo ) who can organise the trip for you. I’ve used Aswan Individual (online) and Jolley’s (in Luxor and online) for various days outs and have nothing bad to say about either. There are others like Memphis and Emo but I’ve no personal experience of any of them to share. It’s important to stress ‘no shopping’ if that’s what you want and prices will vary depending on what your trip requirements are. Contact a selection of individuals and agencies and see what comes up.
