20 Non-Touristy Things to do in Dubai | Solo Female Travel

  • March 2, 2021
  • awareness , Dubai , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

Nicknamed the “Land of Dreams,” you will see many people moving to Dubai to start afresh or just go on a trip to explore their culture. Famous for the lively nightlife scenes and parties, beautiful architectural buildings, and  luxury shopping , Dubai experiences a huge number of tourists visiting the country from all around the world every year.

You must have done your research on “things to do in Dubai on a solo trip” before planning your trip. However, do you know that there are plenty of non-touristy things that you can actually do on your trip to Dubai? Everyone knows about the malls,  restaurants , and beaches in Dubai, but very few know about the hidden gems in the country.

Along with exploring the malls and monuments (which Dubai is globally famous for), doing certain things that very few people know about will only make your trip a memorable one!

1. Ride an abra ride

what to do in dubai

Old Dubai  is one of the must-visit places in Dubai. Not only is it the place where the history of the now-glamorous country began, but it is also the place where you will truly get to experience the culture of Dubai. And the best way to do that is by riding an abra ride. These are small water taxis, which start from Dubai Creek.

You can hop onto the abra and explore places like Bur Dubai and Deira. Also, these abra rides are quite inexpensive – 1 AED each way! You will be assigned a boat driver on the ride. However, if you wish to have the boat to yourself, you can always ask the driver.

2. Indulge in a warm stone massage

Who doesn’t love a good massage, right? All the exploring and sightseeing in the country will definitely take a toll on your body. And what better to relieve it than rejuvenate with a good warm stone massage in Dubai?

These massages are done by professionals, and you can check online which ‘massage parlour’ is convenient for you to visit. During the massage, the professional will place warm stones on parts of your body that are stiffened or strained. It also helps to lower stress levels and improves blood circulation in the body. After your warm stone massage, you can even opt for a full-body massage.

3. Visit the Global Village

The Global Village of Dubai is considered the one-stop solution for food, culture, and talent from across the globe.

You can stop by any number of stations to enjoy the cultural and authentic cuisine from different countries. You will be presented with endless cuisine and shopping options that you will be spoiled for choices. Also, many people visit the Global Village with their families, so it is most likely will be crowded. But the view and the experience are definitely going to be worth it!

I would recommend you visit Dubai in the months of winter (although it may not feel like winter in the country) because of the slightly cooler temperatures than the rest of the year. Also, if you visit Dubai in the months of summer, the Global Village may not be open for visitors. And trust me, you do not want to miss out on an opportunity like this one.

4. Explore the Farmer Markets

Visiting a farmer’s market may not sound like something one would do on their trip to Dubai, right? But you do not want to miss exploring the Ripe Night Market in Dubai. It is located in Al Barsha Pond Park and offers a similar experience to an original farmer market.

You will come across different stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables from all around the world. There are also plenty of stalls that offer the arts and crafts of artists from different parts of the world. This will be a great opportunity to explore different cultures of nations in just one city.

The view of the Ripe Night Market is quite picturesque as well. There are fairy lights atop the stalls, live music where local musicians play different types of music, and movies on big screens at the park.

5. Experience an outdoor rooftop movie theatre

If you are a movie buff, then this is something you must definitely try on your  Dubai solo trip . You can find the rooftop movie theatre in the Galleria Mall. Also, note that the rooftop theatre is open only during the winter season. So, if you happen to visit Dubai in the month of summer, you may not be able to experience this.

The theatre provides a number of seating options where you can make your pick from the bean bags, single seats, or the couches. No matter which option you pick, you will be provided with a warm blanket as well. And with each ticket, you will get food and beverages free!

6. Experience sleeping on a beach

Even though this may sound a bit weird, trust me, sleeping in colourful tents on the beach will be a memorable experience for you. This facility is offered by Banan Beach in Jebel Ali. You can get to the beach via a cab as it is only 20 minutes away from the main Dubai Marina area.

The beach offers simple accommodations in colourful tents. You can also opt for modern options offered in the form of chalets. There are so many things that you can do on the beach, including yoga, water swings, and enjoying pizza cooked in firewood at the campfire.

Not a lot of people know about Banan Beach and its colourful tents. So, if you get a chance to experience this, you should definitely go for it.

7. Visit the Amusement Parks

You must have heard about the numerous shopping malls in Dubai. Well, Dubai has plenty of something else as well – amusement parks. Yes, Dubai has several amusement parks that suit people of every age group and taste. If you are an Indian and a Bollywood lover, you will find an amusement park based on the Bollywood theme. For movie lovers, there is Motiongate Dubai.

Like most things in Dubai, amusement parks are also best enjoyed during the winter season. So, I would recommend you plan your solo trip accordingly.

8. Visit the Miracle Garden

The Miracle Garden in Dubai is the largest flower garden in the world. It has more than 109 million flowers planted. What makes this garden unique is the flowers planted in aesthetic designs.

non tourist dubai

Here is a point to keep in mind though, the Miracle Garden is only open during the months of October to April. If you are a nature lover, then you must not miss out on this opportunity to explore the Miracle Garden.

At the Miracle Garden, you can also visit the Dubai Butterfly Garden. It is the world’s largest indoor butterfly garden! It houses thousands of different butterfly species and is a must-visit for nature lovers.

9. Attend entertainment shows at Dubai Opera

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Luciana | Dubai Blogger (@lucianaterroni)

One of the most beautiful buildings in Dubai – the Dubai Opera is located on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Blvd. It holds plenty of entertaining shows such as fashion events, art exhibitions, ballet, theatre, among others.

Also, the building capacity is quite huge, accommodating about 2,000 visitors at once. The entertainment shows are really popular in the country and are obviously more interesting than visiting a mall!

10. Try the high tea in Dubai

Considered an extravagant affair, the high tea in Dubai is something you must definitely try out at least once. I liked the one at the hotel complex of Madinat Jumeira. When I took an abra ride to the Al Fayrooz Lounge of the hotel, the waiters served the visitors with tea, scones, pastries, sandwiches, savoury, and so many other delicious desserts.

The food items offered are unlimited, so you can eat your favourite food till your tummy fills!

11. Visit the art galleries at Alserkal Avenue

Situated inside a large industrial area, Alserkal Avenue is home to plenty of contemporary art galleries, business, and non-profit organisations. At all times, there is some or the other event going on at Alserkal Avenue. Some of the events that Alserkal Avenue hosts include Social Saturdays, Quoz Arts Fest, and Art Week.

You will find plenty of local and international artists at Alserkal Avenue. If you have a keen interest in art, then you must definitely check this place out.

12. Visit the mosques

what to do in dubai

Abu Dhabi, famous for the beautiful mosques, is located just at a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Dubai. One of the most famous mosques – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, is known for its beauty and elegant designs. It is the largest mosque in the country and also a famous landmark in the United Arab Emirates.

Featuring semi-precious stones, gold, marble stone, and crystals around the development, Sheikh Zayed Mosque is a true epitome of beauty. The mosque also has beautiful fountains set up outside that light up the mosque at sunset. You can read my guide on  what to wear in Dubai  to have a better understanding of clothing that will be allowed inside the mosque.

13. Explore the mountains

You may find it difficult to believe that a country like Dubai, which is known for its hot temperatures and sand dunes, can have mountains. But yes, it is true. You can take a taxi to Al Ain, located just an hour away from Dubai. There, you can visit Jebel Hafeet, the mountain that borders Oman and also the second-largest mountain in the United Arab Emirates.

If you prefer peace over the hustle-bustle of the city, this is something you must definitely do on your solo trip to Dubai.

14. Zipline over Dubai Marina

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nakita Kohan (@nakitakohan)

The largest zipline in the world is located in Dubai Marina and measures about 1 kilometre in length. It will take you over the Dubai Marina and the surrounding landscapes. Trust me, the view is very beautiful and surreal!

The zipline changes its locations frequently, so before you book your tickets for the same, check with the operator. Also, the timings of the zipline may change because of the temperature, so keep that in mind as well.

15. Visit the water parks

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Places To Visit In Dubai (@placestovisitindubai)

Just like amusement parks, Dubai has plenty of water parks as well. And each one is better than the previous one. One of the most famous water parks is Aquaventure Waterpark, located near the Atlantis Hotel.

This water park is huge and sits on a  beach , which makes it all the more interesting to visit and have a relaxed day.

16. See a camel race

How often does one get to see camels running? But, you can find a few in Dubai. The Dubai Camel Racing Club hosts traditional camel races regularly, but with a twist. The jockeys for camel racing have been replaced by robots, and their owners ride alongside them in SUVs. Pretty cool, right?

Seeing a camel race is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you must visit on your solo trip to Dubai.

17. Spend a day exploring the palace

It would be unfair to visit Dubai and not visit the palace. The Emirates Palace is about 1.5 kilometres away from Dubai. Currently, the palace operates as a hotel. So, if you have the budget, you can spend a night at the hotel, or more, if you like. Or, you can explore the huge palace in the morning or evening, at your convenience.

If you want to eat like royalty, you can try out the ice cream topped with 24-carat gold served by a small cafe outside the palace!

18. Visit the Dubai Water Canal

Although considered a paradise for shopaholics, Dubai is also a country where you can spend no money at all and still have fun. One of the country’s recent development, the Dubai Water Canal, runs through the major districts of the country, including Sheikh Zayed Road and the Arabian Gulf.

What makes Dubai Water Canal a must-visit is the beautiful waterfront and stunning waterfalls! You can stroll along the water canal and spend a relaxing day.

19. Camp out in the desert

non tourist dubai

One of the must-have experiences in Dubai is to camp out in the desert. You can speak with tour operators and decide which desert and accommodation you want to choose. These camps offer overnight accommodation along with barbeque nights. It makes for a beautiful experience as you spend the night under a sky full of stars.

20. Explore the street art in Karama

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tani | Holistic Health Coach (@tanidegregorio)

Dubai is quite a clean and organised country where you will barely find things out of order. So, it is unlikely you will come across a graffiti wall in the country. But, if you wander around enough, you may just be able to find something. Karama street has some edgy and colourful street graffiti that you can check out.

You can spend an afternoon here just exploring stunning street art on the walls of the busy shopping street!

There are plenty of non-touristy things for you to explore in the country without having a dull moment. Even if you plan your solo trip for a whole month, you are still going to love every moment of it.

15 Unique Things to Do in Dubai That You Never Knew Existed

Thinking about where to go on your next adventure? Craving sand, opulence and adventure?

Want to spend your days in luxurious pools and exploring world class aquariums while spending your evenings in some of the trendiest clubs and lounges on the planet? If so, have you considered checking out some unique experiences in Dubai? Dubai is not only one of the fastest growing cities on the planet, it’s also become a hot travel destination.

We’ve known dozens of bloggers and travelers who’ve visited this popular United Arab Emirates city and loved it so much they keep going back. They speak so highly of Dubai that we’re sorting out which one of many fantastic  Dubai holidays  that we want to take first.

15 Unique Things to Do in Dubai

We’ve wanted to visit Dubai for years, and every year it creeps higher on our family travel bucket list . With giant skyscrapers surrounded by the blindingly white sands of the Arabian Desert, Dubai is as unique as it is exotic and is high on our list of you-gotta-see-it-for-yourself places.

So whether you’re there for work, for play or just to take in the sheer grandeur of this desert oasis, here are 15 unique things to do in Dubai.

Go skiing in the desert

No, I’m not talking about sand skiing, though you can do that in Dubai as well.  Ski Dubai , in the massive Mall of the Emirates, have built a 22,500 square meter indoor ski area complete with lifts and tubing runs.

As Canadians who live next to one of Canada’s best ski hills (Big White), indoor skiing is a strange concept. We’ve always associated skiing with big blue skies and towering mountains, but we’d love to give indoor skiing a try as well.

This has to be one of the most unique things in Dubai. You can even go zorbing on ice or race your friends down a subzero dual zipline. If that’s not enough, get up close and personal with penguins at the penguin encounter. I think our kids would go just for the penguins!

When we first started looking into visiting Dubai, we checked the temperature as we’d heard it can get warm. Apparently, that’s a bit of an understatement, as temperatures ranging  around 41 °C (105 °F) are quite common. Wow!

If you’ve had enough of the scorching sun, you can cool down by popping into the Chillout Lounge, which is built entirely from ice with an ambient temperature of -6 °C (42 °F). With Dubai summers hitting +42 °C (106 °F), the 36 °C (64 °F) temperature difference can be quite a shock to the system. Don’t worry, they give you warm clothes to wear and serve hot soup, sandwiches, a variety of desserts as well as some delicious mocktails.

We love water of all kinds, and you can usually find us snorkeling , kayaking , or even boogie boarding at the beach.

The problem with Dubais is that it’s mostly all desert. That said, there are plenty of ways to keep cool in the water.

You can spend the day hydrating your skin at one of Dubai’s 3 large waterparks. From big slides to big pools, you’ll have guaranteed big fun. Just remember to bring your suncreen.

Get pampered

Need to relax after a long day of seeing the sights in Dubai? Relax in one of the many beauty spas found throughout Dubai that offer lava shell massages or facial treatments using 24k gold leaf. Yes, a facial using real gold. Don’t worry, you’re worth it.

Get unkinked

Tired of regular yoga?

Micki’s a real yoga fan (she does yoga almost every day) and suggested I add this one to our list: Swing Yoga that can be found in many fitness centers around Dubai.  If doing yoga while hanging upside down or half tied in knots doesn’t put a smile on your face, you need to re-evaluate your definition of fun!

It takes a village

Regular old water not cutting it anymore? Try a goat’s milk bath in one of the special Jacuzzi’s at the renowned Talisse Ottoman Spa. Not only will it will make your skin more beautiful than ever but you’ll be as refreshed as Cleopatra was when she first started taking milk baths a few thousand years ago.

Fly like a board?

For this next one, I’d suggest a big dollop of adventure, and some good hand eye coordination. Even Micki, who’ll try almost anything once, has some reservations about trying this next activity.

If you are a fan of waters ports and you love extremes, you can combine the two and try flyboarding over the Persian Gulf while you’re in Dubai. If flying high above the water on a board connected to a watercraft by a long hose fills you with excitement, then consider yourself excited.

Defy gravity

iFly Dubai is home to the very first double vertical wind tunnel in the world. Scared of heights? Don’t worry, for the majority of the time you’re only ever a few feet off the ground, however for a little more adrenaline you can go way higher.

This one honestly sounds like a blast, as I can see our oldest, who’s 11, loving the sensation!

Dune Riding

7 star hotel, check. Tallest building in the world, check. Giant artificial archipelago of islands in the shape of a palm tree, check. Well, Dubai is also home to a vast and sprawling desert. The Arabian Desert is just on it’s doorstep and you can go on a desert safari in air conditioned comfort as you ride the dunes while searching for Aladdin’s treasure. Feel free to imagine the vehicle as your own personal roller coaster, I would.

Be a race car driver

Fulfill your lifelong dream of driving a Formula 1 car while speeding around other super cars with the professionals at Dream Racing. Not only will you be driving a car that’s probably worth more than your house, you’ll also be going faster than you ever dreamed possible.

I think we’ll keep this one for the adults in our family.

Ice Cream Gold

If you’ve been following us for a while, you may have picked up on the fact that we love our ice cream. In fact, we’ve even visited countries based on ice cream recommendations (check out dondurma ice cream in Turkey !).

In Dubai, the city’s wealth is evident everywhere you look. As such, gold is rampant, even on ice cream. The cities most expensive ice cream dessert, at around $800 USD each, can be found at the Scoopi Cafe, one of the unique restaurants in Dubai.

The dessert is a sundae made with vanilla bean ice cream from Madagascar, saffron from Iran, rare black truffles from Italy and 23-carat gold flakes and powder. The Black Diamond might be a golden delicacy few get to savor however it doesn’t stop people from checking out what other heavenly delights can be found at this trendy ice cream boutique.

After our experience riding dromedary camels in the Sahara desert of Morocco, we’ve become big fans of these gentle animals. Even our then four year old loved camel riding!

Thanks to the desert that Dubai calls home, it’s no surprise that camels played a role in Dubai’s rise to fame. Whether you’re watching a camel race complete with robot jockies, or catching an exciting match of camel polo, in Dubai, their love of camels goes beyond their love of sports. Lucky for you, you can also ride your own. and I guarantee riding one is a memorable way to spend a day.

Submerge yourself

As water lovers, we’re excited to check out some of Dubai’s best swimming pools.

With it’s taste for opulence and the fact that there’s sunshine nearly every single day of the year, it’s no surprise that Dubai is home to some of the most beautiful swimming pools on earth.  Try swimming in a pool surrounded with nothing but sand dunes as far as the eye can see, or in the shadow of the largest building on earth. You can also swim on sky high terraces or lounge in luxurious comfort only a stones throw from the sea.

Tip: Check out some of the world’s most beautiful swimming pools on our Amazing Pools Pinterest Board!

Smell the flowers

When I think of Dubai, I think of desert and scorching temperatures, but that isn’t necessarily the case. In fact, Dubai has one of the world’s most famous and beautiful flower garden.

Visiting the the worlds largest natural flower garden at  Dubai Miracle Garden is a must do for anyone who loves flowers. This sprawling, ever changing flower garden featuring giant buildings covered in flowers as well as fields of mesmerizing flower patterns might make you think you’re Alice in Wonderland rather than a scorching desert.

Find yourself

Feeling a little overwhelmed by all the things there are to do in Dubai?

Well, here’s a bonus one to help get you into the right frame of mind. Dubai’s Illumination Center is the city’s premiere holistic center. From yoga to feng shui they offer classes in nearly everything to get you centered as well as counselling and therapy classes.

Things to know before you go to Dubai

The largest and most populated city in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has become one of the premier financial as well as a transport hubs in the Middle East and it’s also home to the tallest man made structure on the planet, the Burj Khalifa at 829.8 m (2,722 ft). Just look at that view!

With over 95 shopping malls and souks, dozens of mega structures, and a plethora of award winning restaurants and some amazing beaches, Dubai makes a great stopover and an even better vacation.

From taking a 4 wheel drive offroad safari across the desert to going sailing on the Persian Sea, there’s a lot to do both inside and just outside the city.

With hundreds of flights daily going to and from Dubai, what are you waiting for? It’s time to add Dubai to your travel list too.

Have you been to Dubai? Let us know if you had any unique Dubai experiences.

Unique things you have shared to enjoy in Dubai. Thank you so much for the lovely post and suggestions.

This was really enjoyable to read. Having read this there seem to be some wonderful places to visit.Had a quick look at your blog and love it already. Have subscribed. Looks like you’ve spent time in many of the places listed in this post.

Beautiful places i love dubai seriously thanks for this article that shows us a new nice places i would love to visit dubai again my first visit was awesome but couldn’t visit all the places

Wow, very nice sharing. Feel like I am in Dubai.

So in Dubai, I’d choose Desert camping. I’d be fun to rest underneath the stars encircled by golden sand throughout. I question how it might be on the full moon night to determine the layers of dunes. I missed one particular chance in Wadi Rum in Jordan.

Off-roading is yet another adventure that’s worth exploring on your dubai trip. It really is adventurous and also the heart rises and lower because the vehicle rises and lower.

Dubai is such a nice place to stay and famous for its wonderful sightseeing’s attractions. The best trip is Dubai sightseeing’s tour and desert safari in Dubai. We had great time couple of years ago.

Lovely. Dubai is a great place to be. I visit there during vacations as my dad works there. And every time there will be something new to see and explore. The most memorable one for me would be Ski Dubai, a snow park in Dubai. There are with a lot of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, zip line and more. It is a wonder to see a cold environment set up in a desert, even though it is artificially created. It was my first experience with the snow, and it was marvellous.

Amazing post. You have wonderfully mentioned some amazing place and attractions to visit. Dubai is in my bucket list of next travel destinations, so this post is quite impressive.

Hello Charles & Micki,

Your list is really unique. It’s different from the other lists of things to do in Dubai I’ve seen and I’m glad you featured iFly Dubai. I only recently learnt about it and it’s now in my Dubai bucket list.

Thanks for taking your time on it and happy holidays!

This is so true! These places have never been heard! Like from last one month I am searching for blogs and places to visit in Dubai. However still I didn’t come across amongst any of these yet. This blog contains all the details of this place. I am exploring these blogs because my son would be travelling to Dubai next month and he wants to know as much as he could regarding Dubai so that he can enjoy to the utmost satisfaction. I have already applied his Dubai visa, this is his first time and it’s been long that I traveled therefore we are a bit curious to know the docs and everything. So we are pre-preparing everything so that we don’t need to do anything in the last minute.

7 Non-Touristy Experiences in Dubai

Dubai

Dubai has no shortage of amazing tourist attractions to check out, from the tallest building in the world to the historical markets, this city is a true travel hub. However, there are some incredible experiences that visitors won’t find in their travel guides, but that definitely should be done. Take the road less travelled and check out all this Emirate has to offer.

Dubai opera.

This jaw-dropping construction can be seen when driving down Downtown, but few tourists actually take the time to buy tickets and attend the shows. The Dubai Opera opened in August 2016 and has already brought some of the biggest musicals and operas in the globe to town, such as Les Miserables, La Boheme and CATS. Other than high-quality shows, the building itself is a work of art. A night at the opera is a great opportunity to get dressed up and feel culturally enriched while visiting Dubai. Dubai Opera, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard , +971 4 440 8888

1. Meydan Hotel

Dubai

Dubai Brunches

Dubai is famous for its brunch scene , and although residents will spend their entire Fridays having brunch, tourists don’t seem to be very aware of all the experiences on offer. On Fridays, and sometimes Saturdays, restaurants offer popular set-menu, all-you-can-eat/drink brunches. Some of the best in the city are at Ewaan at the Palace Downtown, Coya at the Four Seasons in Jumeirah and Nobu at Atlantis in The Palm Jumeirah. Ewaan, Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard , +971 4 428 7888 Coya, Restaurant Village Four Seasons Resort Jumeirah Beach Road , +971 4 316 9600 Nobu, Ground Level, The Avenues, Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah , +971 4 426 0760

This place truly is Dubai residents’ little secret. BOX PARK is an outdoor mall with several cool restaurants and trendy shops, located on Al Wasl Road. Perhaps the coolest aspect is that all outlets look like massive shipping containers. The containers are super colorful and are a great place to spend some time, window shop and take some unique pictures. BOXPARK, 433 Al Wasl Rd , +971 4 317 3999

4. Skydive Dubai

Amusement Park

Beach Clubs

As Dubai is sunny year-round it’s not surprising that the beach clubs are always crowded. However, this seems to be an experience that only residents indulge in. Hitting up some of the city’s beach clubs — like Zero Gravity , Nikki Beach , Cove Beach and Blue Marlin — can be a great way to enjoy the sun, check out the local party scene and meet residents. Most of these allow walk-ins, but those looking for the real Dubai experience can get a table (for a price). Zero Gravity Beach Club, Dubai Marina, Al Sufouh Road, +971 4 399 0009 Nikki Beach, Pearl Jumeirah , +9714 376 6162 Cove Beach, Jumeirah Beach Hotel , +971 800 2683 Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE,Golden Tulip Al Jazira Hotels and Resort , +971 56 113 3400

Textile souk crowded with people at daytime, Bur Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Whether it's in a souk or a mall, shopping in Dubai is an essential experience © Matteo Colombo/Getty Images

If you're planning to visit Dubai, you'll find a stirring mix of profound traditions and futuristic vision wrapped into starkly evocative desert splendour.

You won't be short of things to do in the sci-fi-esque land of iconic skyscrapers, palm-shaped islands, city-sized malls and palatial beach resorts. Dubai embraces sunshine, innovation and cultural dynamism, and is known as a shopping haven with a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene. Here are some great things to do to make the most from your trip.

Burj Khalifa

Dubai is famous for its dramatic skyscrapers, and above them all looms the Burj Khalifa , shaped like a deep-space rocket and, at 828m, the world's tallest building. It's a stunning feat of architecture and engineering, and a trip to the observation deck on the 124th floor (1483ft) is the most popular way to take in the amazing views it offers. You can also buy tickets for "At the Top Sky" on the 148th floor, which is the world's highest outdoor observation deck at 1820ft.

Clad in 28,000 glass panels, the Burj Khalifa also lays claim to several more superlatives, including the highest occupied floor and an elevator with the longest travel distance. On hazy days, it’s better to visit at night.

Al Fahidi Historic District

Wandering around this restored heritage area in Bur Dubai provides a tangible sense of historic Middle Eastern architecture and culture. Low-lying traditional courtyard buildings flank this quiet labyrinth of lanes in Al Fahidi Historic District , many of them featuring arabesque windows, decorative gypsum screens and wind towers.

Some contain craft shops, small heritage museums, art galleries, artsy guesthouses or cafés serving local fare, including Middle Eastern breakfasts and camel milk smoothies. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding leads guided tours of the quarter.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Covering some 2000 sq metres and touted as the largest natural flower garden in the world, there’s a sense of Alice in Wonderland–esque surrealism when entering Dubai Miracle Garden . Wander past quirky bloom-covered peacocks, clocks and castles, or alternatively, chill out in a cabana with billowing drapes and floor cushions.

Home to 100 million flowers, and adjacent to the enormous nine-dome Dubai Butterfly Garden, it is incredibly popular, attracting 55,000 visitors a week. There are food outlets on site as well as a souvenir shop and small trampoline park.

Shop 'til you drop

Shopping malls represent an integral part of the culture and lifestyle in Dubai. Not merely places for maxing out your credit cards on fashion, electronics or gourmet foods, malls are also where locals go to socialize in cafés and restaurants, to catch a movie in a state-of-the-art multiplex or to get adrenaline kicks in an indoor theme park or game arcade. The best and biggest of the bunch is Dubai Mall, which features not only 1300 stores but also a giant aquarium, an indoor ice rink and a genuine dinosaur skeleton.

Serious shoppers can check out the Dubai Shopping Festival, which lures bargain-hunters from around the world. It takes place in January each year, and there are huge discounts in the souqs and malls. The city is abuzz with activities during the festival, ranging from live concerts to fashion shows and nightly fireworks.

Mushrif National Park

One of the oldest parks in Dubai, Mushrif National Park covers more than 5 sq km of natural ghaf forest. Mushrif is located around 15km east of the city centre, and is a haven for birds, including owls, Orphean warblers, hoopoes and black redstarts. Dating from 1974, the park has plenty of manmade attractions as well, including walking trails and bicycle tracks, a large children's playground, a swimming pool and barbecue pits.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

On the outskirts of Sharjah , the 225 sq km Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve accounts for 5% of the Emirate of Dubai's total land. The reserve was established in 1999 and has been involved in projects to reintroduce mountain gazelles, sand gazelles and Arabian oryx.

It's possible to stay inside the reserve at Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa , which was designed for superluxe ecotourism. The reserve is divided into four zones, the third of which is only open to resort guests and the fourth to a small number of desert tour operators, including Arabian Adventures , offering a less costly admission than overnighting at the resort.

IMG Worlds of Adventure

In 2016, Dubai added four theme parks to its stable of attractions, including IMG Worlds of Adventure , the world's largest indoor theme park. Housed in an air-conditioned hangar the size of 28 football fields, the park is truly impressive, with more than 20 rides and attractions split across four themed zones – Marvel, Cartoon Network, Lost Valley Dinosaur Adventure and IMG Boulevard. You won't go hungry as there are 28 dining outlets to choose from.

Etihad Museum

Opened in 2017, the striking Etihad Museum engagingly chronicles the birth of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, spurred by the discovery of oil in the 1950s and the withdrawal of the British in 1968.

Documentary films, photographs, artifacts, timelines and interactive displays zero in on historic milestones in the years leading up to and immediately following this momentous occasion, and they pay homage to the country's seven founding fathers. Free tours of the adjacent circular Union House are available, which is where the historic signing of the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates took place.

For a dose of Arabian Nights flair, head to Dubai's historic core and plunge headlong into its charmingly chaotic warren of markets. The famed headliner is the dazzling Gold Souq . Even if you don't have a thing for bling, a walk through here will feel like you've entered a giant Aladdin's Cave. It's fun to just watch the action, especially in the evening. If you're buying, sharpen your haggling skills, no matter whether shopping for teensy earrings, an engagement ring or a dowry-worthy necklace.

White Dubai

Dazzling rooftop bars, chill beachfront lounges, classic pubs, cool karaoke joints, speakeasy-style nightclubs, live-music venues – with such variety, finding a party location to suit your mood is hardly a tall order in Dubai. One of the biggest draws for nocturnal action is White Dubai. The mega-venue with its impressive light and sound systems sits smack dab on top of the grandstand of the Meydan Racecourse.

Desert escapes

The Arabian desert, with its weathered mountains, undulating sand dunes and wide open spaces, exudes a special mystique that can easily be savored on a day trip from urbanized Dubai. There are numerous tour operators to set you up with everything from camel treks to sandboarding or overnight safaris. The best ones offer an authentic look at local culture through encounters with Bedouins and traditional meals. Alternatively, consider hiring a 4WD and staying at a desert resort, so you can appreciate the magnificent scenery on your own schedule.

Dubai Museum

Housed in Bur Dubai's Al Fahidi Fort, the city's oldest surviving structure, Dubai Museum, provides a well-laid-out introduction to the history of the emirate. Marvel at its turbo-evolution from simple desert settlement to futuristic metropolis in just a third of a century. Dioramas recreate traditional scenes in a market, at home and in the mosque, while other galleries focus on life at sea and in the desert. An archaeological exhibition illustrates the ancient history of the region with a display of items unearthed during excavations at local digs.

Dubai Design District

This hub for creatives lures visitors with its edgy architecture, contemporary restaurants, public art, galleries and calendar of cultural events. Visitors to Dubai Design District can tap into this laboratory of tastemakers by browsing showrooms and pop-ups, eavesdropping on bearded hipsters in sleek cafés, checking out art exhibits in building lobbies, or attending free screenings and workshops. The week-long Dubai Design Week is held there in November, with an extensive offering of talks, workshops, masterclasses and kids' activities.

Dubai Butterfly Garden

If you want to deepen your knowledge of these pretty flying insects, pop into the Dubai Butterfly Museum , located next to the Dubai Miracle Garden. Some 15,000 butterflies flutter around nine indoor domed gardens, and you can see for yourself how they begin as caterpillars and evolve into their flying adaptations. Don’t miss the Butterfly and Insect Museum, which features in-depth analysis and information about thousands of colorful butterfly species from around the world.

Museum of Illusions

It opened in 2018 and the Museum of Illusions in the Al Seef district is fast becoming a favorite for families and Instagram fans. Kids will love the 150-plus illusions, including the rooms of mirrors, distorted perspective and various other optical illusions, while parents can take memorably wacky photos. Avoid visiting at weekends if possible, as visitors are restricted by number and you may have to wait your turn.

Jumeirah Mosque

Snowy white and intricately detailed, Jumeirah is Dubai's most beautiful mosque and one of only a handful in the United Arab Emirates open to non-Muslims. It's particularly beautiful at dusk and visitors are allowed in six days a week. One-hour guided tours are operated by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding , and while modest dress is preferred, traditional clothing can be borrowed for free.

Dubai Fountain

The dancing Dubai Fountain is spectacularly set in the middle of a giant lake against the backdrop of the glittering Burj Khalifa. Water undulates as gracefully as a belly dancer, arcs like a dolphin and surges as high as 140m, all synced to stirring classical, Arabic and world music soundtracks played on speakers. There are plenty of great vantage points, including a 272m-long floating boardwalk, which takes you just 9m away from the fountain.

Other good viewing spots include some of the restaurants at Souk Al Bahar , the bridge linking Souk Al Bahar with Dubai Mall, the Dubai Mall waterfront terrace, or aboard a 25-minute Dubai Fountain Lake Ride on a traditional wooden abra boat.

Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

The long-running annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature brings authors and thousands of book fans together to celebrate all things reading and writing. Held over nine days in March, the festival hosts talks, discussions, panels and a special program just for children, with many activities free to attend. It offers attendees a chance to meet local and world-famous authors, attend literary debates and workshops, participate in competitions and be inspired by their literary heroes.

Global Village

The carnival-like Global Village is a bit like a ‘world fair’ for shoppers, and you'll find it on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311). Each of the 30-something pavilions showcases a specific nation’s culture and products. Aside from shopping, there's also lots of entertainment – from Chinese opera to Turkish whirling dervishes – as well as a funfair with dozens of rides from tame to terrifying.

Burj Al Arab

This landmark luxe hotel, with its dramatic design that mimics the billowing sail of a ship, floats on its own artificial island and has become the iconic symbol of Dubai’s boom years. The Burj Al Arab's interior is all about impact, drama and unapologetic bling, with dancing fountains, gold fittings, shiny marble and whirlpool baths your butler can fill with champagne if you so wish. If a stay exceeds your budget, you can still partake in the opulence by making reservations for cocktails, afternoon tea or dinner in the underwater restaurant.

Dubai Frame

A gigantic rectangular picture frame in the middle of a green park

Opened in January 2018, this 150m rectangular 'picture frame' sits in Zabeel Park , right between historic and modern Dubai, and provides grand views of both parts of the city. Galleries on the ground floor of Dubai Frame tell the story of Dubai (the past) before visitors are whisked up to a viewing platform at roof level (the present). The final stop is another gallery depicting a vision of Dubai 50 years from now (the future).

Al Qudra Lake

One for the nature lovers, Al Qudra Lake is a series of man-made lakes set amidst the rolling dunes of the Saih Al Salam desert on Dubai’s southern outskirts. Part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, the surrounding area is unspoiled. Swap skyscrapers for wide open dunes and oasis-like pools where you can spot plenty of free-roaming wildlife, more than 100 species of birds and several desert plants.

This long, pristine stretch of white sand, off Jumeirah Road and next to a mosque, is superclean and has lots of activities, including kitesurfing, beach tennis, beach volleyball and kayaking. There are showers, wi-fi, toilets and changing facilities on Kite Beach , plus lots of food trucks and cafés. It offers great views of the Burj Al Arab, and gets very busy on Friday and Saturday when a seaside market with crafts and gifts sets up.

A kite beach full of kite surfers in Jumeirah with the Burj Al Arab in the background.

Perfume Museum

The waterfront Perfume Museum is part of the Al Shindagha Museum restoration project and is the former home of a Dubai sheikha who loved all things perfume. The old building has been restored and its interactive exhibits are based around scent, smells and fragrance. Keep your entry ticket and you’ll get free access to the nearby Dubai Creek House .

Steps from the Deira Old Souk abra station, the sound of Arabic chatter bounces around the lanes of this covered market. Dubai's famous Spice Souk is filled with intoxicating sights and smells. Its vendors work hard to unload cardamom, saffron and other aromatic herbs photogenically stored in burlap sacks alongside nuts, incense burners, henna kits, shishas and dried limes. Away from the tourist-oriented main thoroughfare, tiny shops also sell groceries and other household goods.

Dubai’s rich history and vibrant cultural heritage can be experienced in the charming Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. As you wander through its narrow alleyways, you’ll encounter traditional wind-tower houses, cozy cafes, and galleries.

The Dubai Museum, located in the 18th-century Al Fahidi Fort, offers a captivating glimpse into the city’s past. Take a water taxi, which is called the abra, and across the Dubai Creek to explore the bustling souks and immerse yourself in the authentic Arabian ambiance.

Alserkal Avenue: A Haven for Art and Creativity

Alserkal Avenue also hosts cultural events, performances, and film screenings, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking artistic inspiration.

Before you set off, think about the route. The city offers a wide range of vehicles, but they are not always convenient and not suitable for all tourists. Renting a car will solve the problem, for example, Rolls Royce Cullinan rent in Dubai will take your travel and convenience to a whole new level.

Hatta: A Tranquil Escape into Nature

Hidden in the Hajar Mountains is the incredibly beautiful oasis of Hatta. This place will help you forget about the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy active recreation and breathtaking scenery. Kayak through tranquil turquoise waters, hike along rugged trails, or take a dip in natural pools and waterfalls.

Be sure to visit Hatta Heritage Village. This traditional mountain village is steeped in Emirati culture and history.

Dubai Coffee Museum

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary: A Nature Lover’s Paradise

Another natural wonder of Dubai is the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary at the mouth of the Dubai Creek and it will not leave anyone indifferent. This protected reserve is home to a diverse range of bird species, including pink flamingos that gather in large flocks during the winter months.

Visitors can take guided tours or observe the wildlife from the designated viewing points. The tranquil mangroves, salt flats, and lagoons provide a serene escape from the city’s bustling streets, offering a glimpse into Dubai’s natural biodiversity.

Dubai Flea Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Highfy Travels (@highfytravels)

For those who love thrifting, the Dubai Flea Market is a paradise. Held at various locations across the city, this popular open-air market brings together a diverse array of vendors.

They sell vintage clothing, unique accessories, antiques, and handicrafts. Stroll through the aisles, haggle for bargains, and discover one-of-a-kind treasures that will add character to your collection. The Dubai Flea Market is a testament to the city’s vibrant second-hand culture and a great place to find unexpected souvenirs.

The Empty Quarter: An Epic Desert Adventure

Venture into the vast expanse of the Empty Quarter, also known as Rub’ al Khali, and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Arabian Desert. This magnificent desert landscape stretches across multiple countries, including the southern part of Dubai.

So, the next time you’re in Dubai, take a break from the main attractions and take a trip to these places. They will truly make your visit to the Emirates memorable and authentic.

pool. dubai skyline

Aura Skypool Arrow

This is the planet's highest 360-degree infinity pool, perched 200 meters atop The Palm Tower. Aura Skypool offers not only uninterrupted views of the emirate, but also a unique pool day experience. From 50 floors up, the sweeping views of The Palm, the Burj Al Arab, and the gulf beyond are an incredible way to see Dubai from above and alter your perspective. Tickets cost from about $46 per person for one of three sessions, and are best pre-purchased online .

Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai

Jumeirah Mosque Arrow

As the only mosque in Dubai that's open to non-Muslim visitors, the Jumeirah Mosque is popular with a range of travelers—it's also the most photographed. Easily one of the most beautiful in the emirate, it's crafted entirely from white stone in the medieval Fatimid style and particularly breathtaking at dusk. Visitors are allowed in six days a week (Fridays are for prayer), and tours are led by knowledgable guides who make the experience.

woman scuba diving

Deep Dive Dubai Arrow

This is the world's deepest pool with a depth of 60 meters. It boasts a sunken city for diving enthusiasts to explore and holds 14 million liters of water. Tailored entirely to water lovers, deep diving is for those with certifications only, while snorkeling on the surface and scuba-diving up to 12 meters can be undertaken by anyone over the age of 10. Given Deep Dive Dubai also acts as the region’s largest underwater film studio, packed with 56 cameras and the ability to create different moods, it is definitely a must-try experience. Tickets are required and can be pre-purchased or bought online.

Hatta Dome Park Dubai

Hatta Dome Park Arrow

Ideally positioned a walkable distance from the Hatta Wadi Hub, this is a desert glamping experience that immerses guests in nature, offering them dome-tented accommodation, incredible mountain views, and an abundance of outdoor activities at their doorsteps. Hatta is buzzing with nature lovers and active travelers seeking refuge from the city, and geared up to explore the mountain range. These luxe tents offer comfort and adventure in equal doses. Each has its own terrace, and there are fire pits, barbecues, and food vans just a short distance away. Stylishly furnished in desert-inspired tones, the dome suites have a minimalistic chic design and serve up not only starry evenings, but also panoramic views of the picturesque Hatta mountain range that surrounds them. Despite the reasonably remote location, each room has Wi-Fi and can comfortably sleep two adults and three children (under the age of 14).

Camel Racing Dubai

Al Marmoom Camel Race Track Arrow

A popular heritage destination, Al Marmoom draws camel racing enthusiasts of all stripes, local and otherwise. A day at the camel races is an experience that is nicely representative of Middle Eastern culture, one that dates back to the 7th century. The grandstands are often filled with camel owners, trainers, and handlers, and most seats offer good views of the action. Remember that races start early—between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.—and that commentary and announcements are made in Arabic.

Boat Ferris Wheel Water sunset

Ain Dubai Arrow

Officially the world's largest observation wheel, Ain Dubai is 75 meters taller than the London Eye. Towering over Bluewaters Island, the wheel affords sweeping views from 250 meters in the air. Not only is it visible from so many of Dubai's vantage points, this attraction appeals to just about everyone—schools, businesses, families, tourists, and locals alike. Rides on the structure are ticketed, with passes sold at the venue or online .

spice Souk dubai

Dubai Spice Souk Arrow

Dubai's sprawling spice market is arguably the most entertaining of all the city's souks. It's bustling, with intoxicating sights and smells. Many of the vendors sell the same ingredients—Persian dried limes, saffron, barberries, rose hips, and traditional Middle Eastern spice mixes. Saffron, while still pricey, is more affordable here than elsewhere in Dubai. Part of a complex that features three Jumeirah hotels and an adjoining waterway, the souk has stalls selling everything from the spices, to handmade lanterns, clothes, souvenirs, and everything in between. There are also two-dozen restaurants, indoor and out, not to mention some of the most spectacular views of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel. It’s free to enter, but parking and abra-style water taxis cost extra.

Dubai Fountain show

The Dubai Fountain Arrow

The world's tallest fountain puts the ones in Vegas to shame. Multiple fountain shows are scheduled every day, shooting 22,000 gallons of water up 500 feet in the air within the 30-acre Burj Lake. Plus, a new floating viewing platform means you can get much closer to the action than before. Even better, it's free. If you visit the Dubai Mall , you'll likely see the fountains while you're there, so pause for a moment and enjoy the show.

Hot Air Balloon Dubai

Flying with Falcons by Balloon Adventures Dubai Arrow

In this private adventure experience, the only other person in your balloon is the pilot, who is an expert balloonist and falcon handler. Guests are picked up from their hotels and driven out into the desert. The aerial views of the desert are some of the most spectacular you'll see. Not only is the rolling landscape incredible but it is possible to see Oryx and camels strolling the desert below. This tour is ideal for a special occasion with a loved one or for those looking to experience the culture in a totally different way. Bookings are required.

Global Village Dubai

Global Village Arrow

Dubai's massive Global Village is essentially a theme park for all ages, though it's popular with families as the rides and attractions are kid-friendly. Open Late-October to mid-April, it features concerts, rides, dining, and attractions from around the world. It's on the outskirts of Dubai, so don't think you can pack it into a city-centric day, but if you have time and are interested in some global shopping and entertainment, it's worth a visit.

man in glass and mirrored room. reflections

Sky Views Dubai Arrow

High above Downtown Dubai, 219 meters up, Sky Views serves up a series of adrenaline-inducing one-of-a-kind experiences. Like so many of the experiences offered in Dubai, this incredible attraction is not for the faint of heart. Tread the 25-meter glass-bottom podium that connects the Address Sky View's twin 50-story dual towers; ride the outdoor glass slide; or tackle the Edge Walk, which is exactly as it sounds. Tickets are required but you can buy them online or at the venue.

The Perfume House Al Shindagha Museum Dubai

Al Shindagha Museum: Perfume House Arrow

Positioned on the Dubai Creek within the recently renovated Al Shindagha neighborhood (once the traditional center of the emirate), the Perfume House offers the opportunity to travel back in time and discover the ages-old methods of Arabic perfume-making. You'll learn about the region’s perfume-trading route and explore the traditional oils and ingredients used to make local scents (including oud, saffron, and specific roses).

Kite Beach Dubai

Kite Beach Arrow

Like a Miami beach with its wide stretch of sand, aquamarine water, beach chaises, and enough activities to make you feel like sunbathing isn't quite enough, Kite Beach is for beach lovers. Join a game of volleyball, give kite-surfing a try, or take a run around the soft running track—when it's not 106 degrees out.

Aqua Venture Waterpark Dubai

Aquaventure Waterpark Arrow

Now considered the world’s largest waterpark thanks to its recent extension, the venue has expanded by a third. Trident Tower, its newest arm, features the largest kids-only waterparks in the Middle East—Splashers Lagoon and Splashers Cove. Aquaventure contains more than 30 slides and attractions, including the emirates' longest lazy river, some thrilling rides (including the Leap of Faith and Poseidon's Retreat), and a private beach. There are also record-breaking waterslides to get the adrenaline pumping; Splashers Park and the Lazy River for families; and opportunities that encourage up-close-and-personal interactions with stingrays, dolphins, and sea lions.

Legoland Dubai

Legoland Dubai Arrow

Legos come to life at Legoland Dubai (sister to others across the world, including in Florida), where 60 interactive rides and 15,000 Lego models entrance the young and young-at-heart. Aimed at families with children between the ages of 2 and 12, the theme park was created from 60 million Legos and encompasses six lands, indoor and out. And now there is a Legoland Hotel that allows families to really immerse themselves in Lego for a weekend or overnight stay. In the heat of summer, the outdoor attractions can be a little too much to bear, but the indoor ones are just as good—and they're air-conditioned.

Skydive Dubai

Skydive Dubai Arrow

If free-falling over Dubai at 120 miles per hour sounds like your idea of a good time, Skydive Dubai has you covered. Beginners are welcome to jump in tandem with the company's experienced guides, but licensed divers can take the plunge solo. A tandem flight from Skydive Dubai's location on The Palm costs nearly $600—but it's worth it if you're a thrill-seeker who's not afraid of heights.

Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall Arrow

As the largest mall in the world, the Dubai Mall draws in almost 100 million visitors a year. It's easy to get lost—there are more than 1,200 shops, after all—but a great place to beat the Dubai heat and ogle at the luxury stores. The place draws in more tourists from around the world than both New York City and Los Angeles so it's safe to say, everyone comes here.

Xline Dubai

XLine Dubai Marina Arrow

Fly belly-down across highways, skyscrapers, and swimming pools through the city of Dubai with XLine Dubai, one of the longest, steepest, and fastest urban zip lines in the world. From a height of 560 feet with speeds up to 50 miles per hour, riders soar from the Jumeirah Beach Residence to Dubai Marina, passing once-in-a-lifetime views along the way. There's even an option to ride tandem with friends.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood Dubai

Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood Arrow

This quaint neighborhood offers a glimpse into what Dubai was like before the Emirates were formed in 1971. Traditional buildings crafted from stone, palm wood, gypsum, and teak line the twisted alleys and pathways—history and architecture buffs will love getting lost here. The neighborhood is a quiet retreat from the traffic and skyscrapers of the city, and the labyrinth of lanes make this place feel like you're in a secluded village.

Dubai Creek

Abra Ride Across Dubai Creek Arrow

Riding an abra, or traditional wooden boat, is one of the most low-key ways to get a feel for life in Dubai. The boats gather on either side of Dubai Creek—in Deira or Bur Dubai—and can carry about 20 people. Many locals use the boats to get across the creek quickly and to avoid traffic, but you'll also see lots of tourists, especially at dusk. Given that it's quick and cheap, an abra ride is a must if you plan on spending any time at all in Old Dubai or visiting the QE2 .

Al Seef Dubai

Al Seef Arrow

From its location within the emirate's cultural epicenter, Al Seef marries the city’s heritage with contemporary offerings. The 1.1-mile precinct that hugs the Dubai Creek is split into two areas: one dedicated to the past and another to the future. Meander through the charming laneways, stop and have a coffee or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafes, or simply sit and watch the activity on the creek from one of the tranquil public spaces.

Mall of the Emirates ski dubai

Ski Dubai Arrow

In the middle of a mall in the desert, the world's third-largest indoor ski slope is a sight to behold. A daily lift ticket will run you about $138 (excluding equipment rentals), while a Snow Daycation pass, which primarily provides access to the non-skiing parts of the mountain like tubing, costs $75 per person, and you should plan to get there early. The place is filled with families with kids, most of whom are taking part in various rides, penguin visits and the Snow Cinema instead of skiing. If you're here to shred, there are two runs and a dedicated freestyle area (but Vail this is not).

Burj Khalifa Dubai

At the Top, Burj Khalifa Arrow

The world's tallest building is, unsurprisingly, visible from almost everywhere in Dubai. Taking in the site is thrilling enough from the street, but you can also visit the top of the 160-story behemoth—brace yourself for the thrill of the high-speed elevators, followed by complete awe the moment you step onto the observation deck. Buy tickets online in advance for a specific time slot. Most first-time visitors to Dubai go to the top.

Etihad Museum

Etihad Museum Arrow

This ultra-modern museum offers a comprehensive look at the formation of the seven Emirates that make up the UAE. It draws a diverse crowd of UAE nationals and history-buff tourists. The museum lies on the site where the country's unification was signed in 1971. The Etihad Museum isn't overwhelming in size or content. Even non-museum lovers will find the exhibitions interesting and crucial to a well-rounded UAE visit.

Dinner in the Sky Dubai

Dinner in the Sky Arrow

Dinner in the Sky Dubai is no ordinary restaurant—even pulling up a seat at the table requires that you clip a seatbelt. The experience takes place nearly 165 feet in the air, at a table that rotates ever so slowly over the course of an hour. If you can stomach the altitude, you're in for impressive views of the Gulf—and maybe one of the most unusual dining experiences on the planet. Artful Dining by Le Meridien Mina Seyahi and The Westin Dubai are responsible for the menu, which ranges from burrata salads to Middle Eastern mezzes. It's ideal for a romantic evening or surprise celebration with a first date, long-time partner, or best friend.

I was hoping to get some ideas on things to do that are more around everyday life in Dubai. Things like taking a local cooking class, or shopping in a "locals" market instead of a souq. Maybe touring local neighborhoods neighborhoods instead of shopping malls and tourist traps.

So, any thoughts?

' class=

The culture of Dubai is, therefore, not just Emirati if you want a true picture of an incredibly cosmopolitan city.

Most Emiratis shop in malls, not local markets. Areas in old Dubai - Deira and Bur Dubai - are favourites of the local South Asian population.

non tourist dubai

You could try some of the cafes in Deira lining the creek - its popular with locals and khaleejis in the evening night - food and shisha - ghetto style.

Areas like Mirdiff and Satwa are off the beaten track.

Visit Downtown, Dubai Marina and JBR, take a stroll around Bur Dubai, Deira and Satwa. Enjoy an abra ride across the iconic Creek, join a scrimmage football game at one of the city's parks, hit any of the small Indian eateries in Bur Dubai, visit a sheesha joint, experience an over the top brunch, have a sharwrma or zaatar wrap and don't forget to try the highly addictive karak tea.

UAE is a very young country and which developed and became the UAE of today probably after 90s. So its still relatively new and has a vibrant expat population. The souks are the traditional market place and was probably the only market place before the 90s and before the malls came into existence. Yes it is touristy but at the same time the souqs were the main shopping area during the 90s. After the malls sprang up the residents in UAE frequent the malls more since the souqs are crowded.

However not withstanding that there are still some things that you can do in UAE which is beyond the normal touristy thing. Going to the parks for example is something which the residents do quite often.

I would book a Frying Pan food adventure experience - there are several to choose from and one includes cooking lessons I think.

I would also book a meal at the Sheikh Mohamed Centre for Cultural Understanding

I would normally put links but I’m on a phone so if you google them you will find them

Thank you all for the feedback so far, I really appreciate it!

Having lived more than 35 years in Orlando, FL, I'm trying to apply the "non-tourist tourist" approach to travel. I happen to love cooking and food (as my waistline can attest), but really anything that helps me better learn about the culture would be enjoyable.

Thanks again for the info - I'm looking forward to my trip!

Have a haircut/shave in Satwa

Take the abra across the creek with the labour workers

Walk the alleys of the old souqs which by the way is not a tourist thing only.

Dubai off the beaten track: 10 hidden gems in the UAE

By Joan Torres 11 Comments Last updated on April 9, 2024

non tourist dubai

For the last decade, the United Arab Emirates and, especially, the city of Dubai, has gained the reputation of being the world’s capital of luxury tourism.

And very well-deserved.

A country of Sheikhs and wealthy locals who own the most expensive cars, Dubai has managed to switch from being a Bedouin land to a real metropolis that attracts people from all over the world, for both business and pleasure.

From the tallest building on Earth to a ski resort and just ridiculously unique constructions everywhere, Dubai is already famous for having the most of the most, which is what most travelers are looking for when they plan a trip to Dubai .

However, a country like the United Arab Emirates should be much more than that so, that’s why, lately, many organizations are trying to push and promote tourism beyond glittering malls and expensive hotels.

I lived in Dubai for almost 3 years and, as a real lover of trying to look for more unique and off-beat places, I got to see the face of the United Arab Emirates that not many travelers are aware of.

In this article, I will show you my favorite hidden gems in Dubai and the rest of the country, which combine both adventure and a real taste of the local, Bedouin culture, making an excellent guide to exploring  Dubai off the beaten track .

Keep in mind that the UAE is not famous for having an efficient public transportation system precisely and, unless you have a car, it won’t be possible for you to reach most places, or you will take more than half a day to reach it.

Dubai off the beaten path: My top 10 places

The mangroves in abu dhabi.

Home to some of the hottest and harshest deserts on Earth, Dubai is a popular destination for dune bashing and desert safaris.

However, very few people know that, in Abu Dhabi, there are 110km² of mangrove forest, inhabited by hundreds of bird and reptile species.

It is a fascinating place that breaks with many country stereotypes and one of the reasons why people have survived in this region for millennia as, for many years, they have been a place where local Bedouins and other communities could get wood, as well as different kinds of food.

The importance of such forest is important even today as it is helping to preserve the country’s ecosystem, by reducing carbon emissions, as well as preventing the coastline erosion caused by ocean currents.

You can visit the mangroves on a day trip from Dubai and the activities include riding on a donut boat, which is quite boring in my opinion, and kayaking through the narrow water lanes naturally shaped by the vegetation, which is a pretty cool thing to do.

The donut boat costs 300AED (81USD) and the kayak 130AED (35USD)

dubai off the beaten path

Delma Island

With more than 7,000 years of history, Delma Island is one of the oldest inhabited places in the UAE and, perhaps, in the whole Arab Gulf, as well.

The island is one of the very few places in the country which still has a very visible cultural heritage, with plenty of date farms and a strong fishing culture. Qeshm Island in Iran is the only other place where you can still get a glimpse of what the Persian Gulf culture was like.

But this is not all. For beach lovers, here you will find the best beaches in the country, which are practically empty and have crystal-clear blue water.

Delma can be reached by ferry from Jebel Dhanna terminal, very close to the border with Saudi Arabia. It’s around 470 kilometers from Dubai, so it would be quite difficult to visit it on a day trip. The island has a few hotels though and, if you are into camping, there are, literally, hundreds of kilometers of empty, sandy beaches.

The island is inhabited by over 10,000 people, so ferries run pretty often and, of course, you can take your car, as well.

Delma Island is one of the best ways to explore Dubai off the beaten path.

Delma Island

Dig Daga Farms

Located in Ras al Khaimah Emirate, Dig Daga is the place where the shifty sand dunes are replaced by green, rolling hills and cultivated land.

Dig Daga is a very popular picnic area that attracts many local Emiratis, so it could be your chance to finally interact with them, something quite difficult to do when you are in Dubai.

Moreover, you can also visit some of the farms where you can actually buy fresh dairy products, like milk for example.

Dig Daga Farms is 114 kilometers from Dubai and the only way to get there is by car.

Camel Market Al Ain

A bustling, chaotic animal market, where you can bargain over the price of a camel, the animal market of Al Ain is my favorite, as there are, literally, hundreds and hundreds of camels and a really authentic atmosphere.

Today, the sellers are not Emirati but Pakistani and Indian, even though most likely, the actual owners are locals. However, the bazaar is still really genuine and, if you wander and wait for long enough, you will see wealthy Emiratis coming with their pickups to bargain for camels and other animals.

Read: 7 Places off the beaten track in Egypt

Every time I had friends visiting, I never hesitated to take them there, which means that I have been here so many times!

The market is, obviously, free and you will be one of the very few tourists. It’s around 1 hour and 30 minutes from Dubai and a top off the beaten track spot in Dubai.

Al Ain camel market

Fossil Dunes Al Wathba

Just 30 kilometers from Abu Dhabi, at some point, the sandy, shifting dunes that prevail in the Arabian desert become a set of rugged rock formations which have been eroded and sharpened by the wind for millennia, developing into some amazing fossilized figures.

The fossil dunes of Al Wathba are a place worth spending a few hours in, not only to check out the impressive rocks but also, because you are likely to see many camels around, offering awesome picture opportunities. Try to come at sunset, when it is the best time for photography, obviously.

Most people visit the fossil dunes on a day trip but they could make an ideal spot for camping under the stars.

Hidden places in Dubai

Al Qudra Cycle Path

Another great way to explore Dubai off the beaten track is to go along the Al Qudra Cycle path, an attraction for adventure travel lovers, consisting of a cycling trail that goes through a sand-dune desert.

For almost 100 kilometers, the track goes through a vast sea of mountain dunes, making the ride and views beyond epic.

If I am not mistaken, the shortest loop is 50 kilometers, which could be easily completed in a few hours by any beginner cyclist who is in relatively good shape.

There are many bikes available for renting but, of course, you can also bring your own. Prices vary per type of bike and wearing a helmet is compulsory, whether you rent one or bring yours.

Try to come very early in the morning, before the harsh sun of the Arabian Peninsula starts eating your brain 😉

Hidden gems in Dubai

Did you know that, in UAE, there is a 2,000-meter high mountain?

This is what I always tell my friends when I am back home in Spain and it’s funny to think that they never believe me, even though it is actually very true.

The mountain is called Jebel Jais and it is located in Ras Al Khaimah emirate. In winter, temperatures may drop down to -5ºC, so you may even find some snow. The peak is kind of shared between Oman and the United Arab Emirates so, at the top, there is a fence separating both borders.

However, in my opinion, Jebel Jais is every day becoming less off the beaten track as, recently they built a road that goes all the way to the top, as well as the longest zip line in the world. Moreover, they are also planning to build a hotel and other tourist infrastructure so I recommend you go there as soon as possible before it becomes a real tourist trap!

In any case, Jebel Jais is an excellent spot to escape from the desert and the city jungle!

Hidden places Dubai

Wadi Shawka

Just a bit north of Hatta , Wadi Shawka is the wild place in fashion in the UAE today and, in my opinion, a much better alternative than Jebel Jais, as it is much less crowded.

With several hiking trails, epic camping spots, natural pools and many cycle paths, Wadi Shawka is the ultimate hidden gem in Dubai and the UAE, for mountains lovers.

Dubai off the beaten track

Home to one of the highest dunes in the world, the largest oasis in the region and the only place where you can see the real, local Bedouin culture, Liwa Oasis is an impressive desert oasis that sits at the edge and beginning of the famous Empty Quarter , the largest continuous sand dune sea in the world.

Liwa Oasis is found in the southwest of UAE, around 350km from Dubai and 250km from Abu Dhabi, really close to the Saudi Arabian border. Actually, if you keep driving after the oasis, the road ends at the sand dunes themselves, from where you see a huge fence, which marks the border with Saudi Arabia and goes across the desert as far as your eyes can see

The oasis is full of palm tree plantations, an old fortress and home to a few farms where actual local Bedouins live. I have been traveling all across the country and this was the only place where I have met them. They were extremely friendly by the way, as we were invited to have some tea with them and even camel milk.

For more information, read: A guide to Liwa Oasis

A Bedouin and his camel in Liwa Oasis

Horse racing in Meydan

The Emiratis and Arabs, in general, are the most fanatic football fans ever, more than Spanish or British themselves but, actually, their national sport is horse racing and, in fact, UAE has some of the best and most expensive horses in the world.

If you want to experience something very traditional but modern at the same time, you can’t miss the weekly horse racing at Meydan racing stadium, which takes place every Thursday at 7pm, from November to March.

The races are impressive, so is the atmosphere, as all types of people attend: from wealthy locals to expats and laborers. The general entry ticket is free but, of course, you can also get a premium seat, which gives you access to the bar and restaurant. For further information, visit the official website .

Hi there! Great post, thank you for that! I was wondering: in many pictures I see only man around. Would you say it’s safe to travel to all of this places as a couple, or just to some of them? Me and my wife were very welcomed by Bedouins in Jordan, but I wonder about the Camel Market of the Horse Races…. any info would be very appreciated! Safe travels my friend!

Hi Luciano. UAE is, perhaps, the safest country in the Middle East. There are LOADS of expat women and if they are not in the pictures is a coincidence. You should be worried about anything of that, at all 😉 Cheers!

how did you travel to all these places?

by car, always

Hello! Great post!! To go to Delma island from Dubai you mention it is better to overnight as it is indeed quite far. Where would you stay? Any options besides in the island itself? (Seems to only have one hotel) Thank you!! Magda

Hey Magda! Not sure to be honest! I actually camped, so can’t tell, sorry!

Hi Joan, thanks for the tips. Very helpful! Your post makes the UAE far more diversified. The Liwa Oasis is very fascinating. I first read about it in an old book the Arabian Sands.

cheers, it’s truly a magic place 🙂

Hi Joan, Really like all the info! We would love to do a safari but not with all the hoards of tourists. Are there any companies that do small private tours ? Cheers!

Non-Touristic Places You Need to Visit in Dubai

non tourist dubai

When thinking about a trip to Dubai, many tourists immediately imagine the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, camels and shopping malls, for which the megalopolis is famous for. However, don’t assume that there is nothing else to see in this city, that is absolutely not the case. For those who are looking for something unique on the way to Dubai, the best way is to ask the locals for advice, but we have done it for you and gathered a list of unique places in Dubai that many tourists don’t know about.

However, there is a small detail that we should mention at once, in most cases, all the non-tourist places are located not in the city center and they require a longer time to get there. The easiest and most convenient way to get to far-away destinations is to take a car. Nowadays, thanks to a large number of car rental services everyone can hire a car for any time and be completely mobile. Moreover, the choice of a car is very large so that everyone can easily even rent a Ferrari in Dubai for a small price. Automobile companies provide the best vehicles and high-qualified specialists who will help to find and rent a car according to your preferences, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The abandoned city of Al Madam

The first place we recommend to visit is located an hour away from Dubai , this is a very unusual place which has an interesting history. We are talking about the abandoned village of Al-Madam, which is located in the desert. The old legend says that residents left this town because of evil spirits, which gave this place its name – ghost town; however, historians believe that the main reason for it was the sandstorms in the area. Today this place is open to the public, you can not only explore the surroundings of the desert, but also enter the houses, where the personal belongings of local residents are still preserved.

Al Ain park

Two hours’ drive from Dubai lies Al Ain Oasis, which is considered a true landmark with an ancient fortress and a picturesque park. Within a short drive of Al Ain you can see Mount Hafit, which is considered to be the highest point in the UAE, where visitors can enjoy a majestic view of the surrounding area, visible from afar.

Al Hamriyah beach

If you are tired of overcrowded tourist beaches where it is almost impossible to swim then this place is definitely for you. Al Hamriyah Public Beach with its golden sand and coastal palm trees is a quiet place where mostly locals from the city like to relax. This is the best place to watch sunrises or sunsets with your beloved one.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park

This surreal place may not appeal to everyone, but we still want to tell you about it. The world’s largest solar park covers an area of 44 square kilometers and is equipped with millions of photovoltaic panels. The place looks more like a space station or a scenery for a sci-fi movie . Nowhere else in the world you can find a similar installation, that’s why we advise you to see it at least once in your life.

Feel free to explore this wonderful city on your own and discover new places . We’re sure you’ll love to visit all the places we mentioned above, so we wish you a nice trip and wonderful holiday in Dubai!

Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

It is important to check the authenticity of travel agents you are dealing with and refrain from paying or sending copies of your official documents until after you are 100 per cent sure the tour operator is genuine. You can seek the help of the  UAE embassy in your country  for verification.

Question: I am a non-Muslim expat living in Dubai. I have some assets in the country and wish to draw up a will. How do I go about this? What do I do after to make sure it holds in my home country too?

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Answer: Pursuant to your queries, as a non-Muslim resident of Dubai, you have multiple options to create and register a will for your assets in the UAE.

In this context, we may refer to the provisions of the following laws: (i) Federal Decree Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status, (ii) Law No. 15 of 2017 Concerning Administration of Estates and Implementation of Wills of non-Muslims in the Emirate of Dubai and (iii) the DIFC Wills and Probate Registry Rules.

In the UAE, a non-Muslim may apply the provisions of the UAE Personal Status Law for non-Muslims his or her personal matters. This is in accordance with Article 1(1) of the UAE Personal Status Law for non-Muslims, which states:

“The provisions of this Decree Law shall apply to non-Muslims who are national citizens of the United Arab Emirates, and to non-Muslim foreigners residing in the state, unless any of them adheres to the application of the law of their home country, with regards to the articles of marriage, divorce, inheritance, wills, and proof of parentage, without prejudice to the provisions of Articles (12), (13), (15), (16), and (17) of Federal Law No. 5 of 1985 referred to above.”

Based on the mentioned provisions of the UAE Personal Status Law for non-Muslims, a non-Muslim may also register a will as per his/her choice, This is in accordance with Article 11(1) of the UAE Personal Status Law for non-Muslims, which states:

“A legator may leave a Will with all his assets in the State to anyone of his/her choice according to the controls set out by the Implementing Regulations of this Decree Law."

In addition, the registration of wills of non-Muslim individuals in Dubai should follow the provisions of Dubai Law No. 15 of 2017, referring to the provisions of Article 3 and Article 6(a).

Article 3 of Dubai Law No. 15 of 2017 states:

“This Law will apply to all Wills and Estates of non-Muslims in the Emirate, including in the Dubai International Financial Centre.”

Meanwhile, Article 6(a) of Dubai Law No. 15 of 2017 states:

“A register known as the "Register of Wills of non-Muslims" will be created at the Dubai Courts and the DIFC Courts for the purpose of registering Wills of non-Muslims.”

Following the above provisions of the Dubai Law No 15 of 2017, a non-Muslim resident in Dubai, may register his or her will at the Dubai Courts or the DIFC Courts Wills Service Centre of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

A will to be registered in Dubai Courts or DIFC must include the details of the executor(s) and/or beneficiaries of the testator’s properties and assets including but not limited to all of the testator’s movable and immovable properties, tangible and intangible properties. This also includes but not limited to real estate properties, shares in businesses and legal entities, bank accounts and the money kept in the bank accounts, credentials or passwords for his or her bank accounts, and other matters, jewellery, (the ‘Estate’) based in the UAE or outside the UAE.

With respect to the registration of wills at the DIFC Wills Service Centre, Article 9(1) of DIFC WPR Rules sets out the requirements for the registration of non-Muslim wills. The provisions read as follows:

"1 These Rules shall apply only to wills:

a. of non-Muslim individuals over the Age of Majority;

b. 1) that are in a form as set out in Schedule 1, in the English language, in writing;

2)witnessed by at least two witnesses of the age of majority, such persons being either physically or virtually present in front of the Registrar or an Authorised Officer at the time of witnessing;

c. signed (in person) by the Testator;

d. that appoint Executors over the Age of Majority;

e. that appoint a Guardian, if at all, for a Minor who is habitually a resident with the Testator, in Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah;

f. that are deposited and (at the time of death remain) registered with the Registry; and

g. that state that the Testator intends Administration and succession to the Property dealt with by the Will to be governed by these Rules and the laws of the DIFC.”

At the DIFC Wills Service Centre, a testator may include all his estate within and outside the UAE. This is in accordance with Article 11 of the DIFC WPR Rules, which states"

“A Will may give or dispose of Immovable and Movable Property, located in any part of the world, to which the Testator is entitled at the time of his death, whether the Testator became entitled to it before or after the registration of his Will, and shall not govern succession to any other Property.”

A non-Muslim expat in the UAE may also register his/her will at the consulate or embassy of his or her own country, if such service is available.

Therefore, based on the aforementioned provisions of law, you may draw up and register your will for your Estate in the UAE before the Notary Public at the Dubai Courts, or at the DIFC Wills Service Centre. You may also register your will at the embassy or consulate of your home country, if the service is available.

Generally, a will registered in Dubai via the procedures mentioned above would be valid and binding outside the UAE. However, it may be noted that the validity and enforceability of such wills may also be subject to the laws of the other countries concerned.

It is also advised to avail independent legal advice from a legal counsel of your home country, to ensure that you're aware of the applicability of a will registered in the UAE for your estate here, as well as your home country.

This will also help you if there's any additional procedures which may be carried out to make sure that your will registered in the UAE will be valid in your home country.
