The Backstreet Boys are getting *NSYNC this spring.

*NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and Backstreet Boy AJ McLean just announced they’re hitting the road for their co-headlining ‘A Legendary Night Tour’ this March.

On the quick eight-show run, the pair will stop into Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 23.

“It’s gonna be a lot of *NSYNC songs, a lot Backstreet Boys songs,” Fatone shared on Instagram .

Yes, that includes Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” “Everybody” and “As Long As You Love Me” as well as *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart.”

They’ll also play tracks that “never hit on records” along with ’90s stuff, stories and new songs from AJ McLean’s upcoming solo album.

“There will be old s—, new s—- and cool s—-,” McLean said.

And if you want to be there to see the boy band icons mix it up live, you can grab your tickets as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Jan. 12, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

He’s not wrong either.

The lead singles “Smoke” and “All Kinds of People” are as bouncy and danceable as advertised.

Joey Fatone and AJ McLean Are Crossing the Boy-Band Streams on a Joint Tour

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

At the turn of the millennium, the battle lines in the boy-band wars were fairly clear. You were either on Team Backstreet Boys or Team ‘NSync. Some fans took a Switzerland-like stance and professed equal love for both groups, but they were mostly full of shit. Everyone had a favorite.

The cold war turned hot when ‘NSync’s Chris Kirkpatrick and the Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean dated the same woman a couple of years apart. “I wanted to punch AJ’s lights out for a little while,” Kirkpatrick said years later. “I guess he was talking smack to her about me, so I confronted him on it and wanted to kick his ass.”

This year, Backstreet Boys are off the road, which frees up McLean up for a collaborative tour with ‘NSync’s Joey Fatone that will officially mark the last vestiges of any sense of rivalry between the two groups. They have yet to finalize the set list, but expect them to cross the boy-band streams by playing each other’s songs throughout the evening.

We hopped on a Zoom with McLean and Fatone to hear about the history of their supposed feud, how they came together for this tour, what fans can expect once they take the stage together, and the ultimate dream of an ‘NSync/Backstreet Boys mega tour.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

AJ McLean: The Tupperware, yes. Over off of freakin’ OBT [Orange Blossom Trail].

Joey: I knew them before Brian [Littrell] and Kevin [Richardson] were in the group. I knew the Backstreet Boys before they were really the Backstreet Boys.

What were your first impressions of them? Joey: “Why is everybody else doing this and I’m not doing that? That’s what I want to do.” I saw New Kids do it back in the day too. “Why am I not doing that?”

AJ, what’s your first memory of Joey? AJ: Before I knew anybody else in the group, just from hanging around in the Orlando area, Joey was doing stuff at Universal, and I knew people at Universal, and we crossed paths quite a few times. I knew that he was a singer. But the first time I knew about ‘NSync as a whole was when Lou [Pearlman] and our previous manager, Johnny [Wright], had kind of signed them. We had heard that they were kind of similar to us, but we didn’t really know. We had been going already and we were just burnt out, fried … tour, tour, tour. And Disney came to us and they asked us to do a special of some sorts.

Joey: It was a concert special that they were doing with a lot of different artists that were doing performances around Universal. They were doing that a lot.

Nick and Aaron Carter are 'Fallen Idols' in New Doc Trailer

Max martin is pop's ultimate mystery man. he wants it that way, watch 'nsync reunite at justin timberlake's los angeles concert.

AJ: The rest is history. That changed things for them, kind of overnight really.

The boy-band lore is that the Backstreet Boys were initially less than thrilled that this new boy band was suddenly on the scene. Is that true? AJ: No, it’s not “less than thrilled.” Look, there was always healthy competition. Period. But because there was no social media, because we all weren’t hanging out together … back then press was different. It was magazines. There was no online. So the press was basically depicting this theory that we were against each other, and that was never the case. And we never really had an opportunity, either group, to speak on it because everybody’s lives were going full speed. We did multiple shows with these guys. We did the Radio Music Awards, Billboard Awards.

Joey, is that how you saw it? Joey: Yeah. A few of us always would talk and say hi to each other, but they always kind of … kept us away just to make it a competition to make us do better. We were like, “What could we do just to be above everybody?” It wasn’t like, “Oh, we need to beat them. We need to be better than them.” It was more like, “No, man, let’s try to do what we’re going to do, and we just want to be number one.” But when you get older, you start to realize, “That’s not even the main purpose of anything because if we all are able to go on the same thing, who cares if we’re number one or number two?”

Joey: When we finally got together, it was always like, “Do we have any animosity?” It’s like, “No.” They just kept us away from each other because of what was going on with the whole Lou thing, becoming a sixth member. They didn’t want us to talk to each other about what was going on behind the scenes with Pearlman.

AJ: Yeah, I think probably the only time that some of my boys were a little bit … was when Jive Records signed ‘NSync. We had the same label, same managers, same producers. It was like, “OK, now it’s a little too much. We can all coexist and we can all help each other, but now it’s like everyone’s doing the same thing.”

AJ: One of my all-time favorites from those guys is “Digital Get Down.” I just love the lyrics. I love the flow of this song. Who produced that?

Joey: What’s his face … David Nicoll. Do you remember him?

AJ: Yeah! There were songs of theirs that me, personally, I’m like, “Man, that would’ve been a great Backstreet record.” “Pop” was one of them. “Gone” too. It’s funny because “It’s Gotta Be You” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” were both like … You’re just changing one word. “It’s Gonna Be Me” is one of my favorite ‘NSync videos. I thought that was genius with the dolls.

Joey: Thank you, sir.

AJ: It was comparable to “Backstreet’s Back” where we did full makeup. But I really think “It’s Gonna Be Me” was ‘NSync’s “Backstreet’s Back,” video-wise.

Joey: We never had the bodies to do the rain stuff. That didn’t work for us.

AJ: You weren’t missing out on anything. Trust me.

Joey, what were your favorite Backstreet Boys songs? Joey: “Quit Playing Games,” that’s my favorite song. It’s quite possibly my all-time favorite. The first time I heard it, I was like, “That’s a badass song. You sons of bitches, damn it.” And “Larger Than Life” is a great one too. When you take a song like that apart and deconstruct it or just listen to the harmony, you realize it’s just dope. You have got to give credit where it’s due.

How did you first get the idea for this collaborative tour? Joey: It really started with my idea of having different guys from different groups. The idea of it came back way back when I did Dancing With the Stars. It was with Drew Lachey, Joey McIntyre, and Joey Lawrence. My whole idea was more of a Rat Pack feel.

AJ: That’s a lot of Joeys.

But now that everybody sees it, they’re like, “Oh, my God, this is the frickin’ greatest thing ever.” I said, “It’d be fun if we sang each other’s song and then either poke fun at each other and then maybe we can do some new material. What about songs that you’ve never sang before and always wanted to sing?” So that’s how that became about. And I started doing shows with Dee Snider and Scott Stapp and all these people. But of course, what really worked was me and AJ.

AJ, how does it feel to sing ‘NSync songs? It’s gotta be weird, like seeing Mick Jagger do “Hey Jude” or something. AJ : Well, I’ll take that compliment. Honestly, it’s really fun. It’s fresh because I have no shame in saying I am an ‘NSync fan. I’m a fan of good music, and they’ve got great songs, and they have an amazing catalog. So to get up there and to sing these songs with a member of that band, it’s just fuckin’ cool.

One of the other things that I love about this show is that we have a live band, so we can change the show from night to night. This show is just ever evolving. We’re going to sing each other’s songs and sing songs of other groups that we’re fans of that take you back, whether it’s Green Day or Nirvana. We just added Lady Gaga to the set. It is like a Vegas revue. It’s got a little bit of everything. It’s got comedy, it’s got heart, it’s got great music. It’s got a lot of great interaction with the audience.

Joey, how do you feel when you sing “Backstreet’s Back?” Is that a weird moment for you? Joey: One time I yelled, “Give it up for ‘NSync!” at one of the shows. It automatically went to my brain out of nowhere. I’m used to hearing my guys sing the songs every night. To hear a different person sing those lines differently from what you’re used to, I like that. It’s a change of pace. I’m sure AJ hears Nick every night singing certain lines. He doesn’t often hear me sing one of his lines. So it’s different, and I think it’s a cool, fun take on it.

We did a show that was Joey, Nick, and Lance during Pride. Joey and Lance taught Nick and I the choruses to “Bye Bye Bye.” So the four of us did full-on choreography, and the audience went nuts. They were like, “Oh, my God, you guys know the moves?” It’s like, “We’ve known them for years — we’ve just never done them together live in a show.”

A ton of Nineties nostalgia conventions have popped up in recent years. What do you think is driving that? Joey: What goes around comes around in a circle. It sounds funny to say that we’re kind of nostalgia. We are, but we’re not. We’re still working and still doing things, but our songs and our music, you got to be real. It’s over 20 years now, 30 years for some of our songs.

A lot of these women are now in their 30s, 40s. They have children; they want an outlet. They want something to experience. They want to relive their childhood. So this is something almost like giving thanks [to fans] for all the years that you’ve been supportive for us.

What have these conventions been like for you, AJ? AJ: It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. We’ve done meet-and-greets and it’s so fast-paced, you don’t really get to spend quality time with your amazing fans. And doing these Cons, you’re going at your own pace. So when you’re at your booth and the fans come up and they get an autograph and they get a photo, you could talk to one girl for 15 minutes if you want to.

You get to hear them tell you these great stories of why they’re fans and how they’re moms now, and they got their kids into it now, this whole new generation. It reminds you why you love what you do, and it just keeps you going.

Plus, Joey and I are both geeks. We take breaks during the Cons, and we’ll walk around and buy stuff. I’m a huge comic book nerd. So I’m getting comics, and then Funkos. My poor wife is just like, “I don’t understand.” I’m like, “You’re not supposed to understand. This is what I like.” There’s worse hobbies I could have. Comic books and Funkos and sneakers. Those are my vices.

Joey: The thing that really sets me and AJ apart from everybody else is we are performers. We love to perform onstage. Whatever it is, let’s go for it. Whether it be acting, whether it be singing. So I think that’s kind of why this works as far as us performing onstage.

Joey, when ‘NSync split, you were relatively young. It forced you to go out and really reinvent yourself. Joey: Well, thank God it didn’t force me. I wanted to. It wasn’t like, “Oh damn, I’m out of a job. What have I got to do?” It was more or less, “Holy shit, these doors are opened. Let’s see if I can walk in. I may suck, but let’s find out.”

I always wanted to do Broadway. Right after ‘NSync, I did Rent on Broadway. I did Little Shop of Horrors on Broadway. And then when I did Dancing With the Stars, people saw my personality. People were like, “Oh, he’s not just a guy from ‘NSync. He’s actually a person that actually acts.” It was interesting the path that I had to go through, but it was amazing.

AJ: Joey’s got to fulfill a lot of dreams that have been on my plate since I was six years old. I’m a huge fan. I mean, I grew up in musical theater, so to be able to do Broadway someday is on my bucket list. To do a movie, on my bucket list. Joey’s done three My Big Fat Greek Wedding s.

AJ, speaking solely as ‘NSync fan, are you hoping they tour one day with all five of them? AJ: Honestly, I am. And there’s been so many talks. Even before Trolls and before them coming together again, there’s been so many years of talks of Backstreet and ‘NSync touring together and a stadium tour. I’m not trying to start a new rumor. But if Backstreet, ‘NSync, and Spice Girls did a tour together, the world would melt down.

There are no stadiums big enough for a tour like that. AJ: What a great, almost like send-off moment that would be for everyone’s career. And it’s only for the fans, to say one big giant thank you for years and years of being loyal fans to all of us.

AJ, is there talk of a new Backstreet Boys record? You guys had a legit hit on the last one. AJ: We definitely have a lot of things coming up that are kind of on the QT, but definitely we are not done. We want to go back to Vegas at some point down the road. We would love to go back to do another residency, a little longer. We didn’t even expect the residency that we did to go two years. It was supposed to be nine shows, and it became 81 shows, the fastest-selling residency in Vegas history.

But 2024, we’re all taking a break. We’re doing a couple of one-offs. I just released my first single. I have my first EP coming out shortly, and then there will be even more music from me over the course of the summer and the end of the year, and then eventually touring on my own.

But being able to do my solo stuff in this show with Joey, it’s an honor, it’s a privilege, and I’m very grateful for it because I get to be myself even more so in a show like this. Joey and I are very much paralleled universe. We’re very much similar individuals in many facets of our life, onstage and offstage. We really complement one another. But there is definitely some really big things on the horizon for Backstreet.

The Beach Boys are still touring in their 80s. There’s no reason you can’t do the same thing. AJ: Kevin said that we would love to be the Rolling Stones of pop. I mean, crap, we’re coming up on 31 years. Before you know it, we’re going to blink our eyes, and it’ll be 40 years. I don’t think we’ll be dancing at 40 years, just so you know.

Joey: I think Kevin is going to look exactly the same. I think he drank vampire’s blood. He’ll look exactly the same, and have hair.

AJ: I’m very jealous of that, by the way.

Joey: We’re all jealous.

People are never going to stop wanting to hear you guys sing these songs. Joey: I’m going to be 90 in Vegas going [sings “I Want You Back” in an old man’s voice], “You’re the one that I want/You’re the one that I need.”

So is this tour the final bit of evidence that any Backstreet/’NSync feud, real or imagined, is 100 percent over? Joey: I don’t think there’s been any animosity since 1997. Chris and AJ had a thing, but that was because of a girl.

AJ: We dated the same girl two years apart, and that was it. Now we’re the best of friends. We have so much in common. He’s a dad. I’m a dad. He’s married. We’re boys now.

There’s been a lot of debate over which group was bigger. What’s your take? Joey: I mean, there’s no competition. We are. We’re the biggest group ever.

AJ: Clearly, 30 years says everything. I mean, come on.

Every year that passes, the demand for an ‘NSync tour just grows. It’ll be such a big deal when it happens. Joey: I don’t know if I want to be there for it. I’m nervous.

AJ: I’ll be front row, man. It’s going to be really hard for me not to want to jump onstage and sing all your songs.

AJ McLean and Joey Fatone are going on tour, and yes, they will be singing their groups’ songs

AJ McLean and Joey Fatone announced they are going on a joint 2024 tour.

Everybody, this news is tearin’ up our hearts.

AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys and Joey Fatone from ‘N Sync announced on Jan. 9 — which also happens to be McLean’s birthday — that they are heading on tour together. The two boy banders are teaming up for “A Legendary Night” where they will each perform their respective group’s greatest hits for fans in the U.S. to enjoy.

The singers will be joined by a seven-piece live band for an unforgettable and nostalgic eight-city tour. "Joey Fatone & AJ McLean: A Legendary Night" will kick off in Temecula, California, on Mar. 15 and wrap Mar. 30 in Jacksonville, Florida.

“This is going to be fun!!!!  @aj_mclean  my dude ….here we go!!!!!” Fatone wrote on his Instagram announcing the news, with McLean adding on his profile, “Get ready for a ‘legendary’ show — can’t wait to see you all there!”

Once pinned against each other during their early and height of their careers, BSB and 'N Sync members have reunited and worked together over the last decades.

Backstreet Boys have continuously released albums and toured, even celebrating their 30th anniversary last year. However, ‘ N Sync went on hiatus and released their last song together in 2002.

Last year, the five ‘N Sync members reunited and released their first song in over 20 years, “Better Place,” for the animated movie “Trolls World Tour.”

Fatone told TODAY.com in October that after ‘N Sync’s reunion in 2023, many fellow boy banders reached out to congratulate him and collab.

“They’re all supportive. I had a conversation with Nick Carter (from the Backstreet Boys), actually had a conversation with Nick Lachey (from 98 Degrees),” Fatone said. “Every guy from every group was literally like, ‘Dude!’ They’re so happy, they’re so proud. They’re like, ‘Get the heck out there and do it. We’ve been doing it, and I know that you guys have not. It’s only been a matter of time.’”

And that time has come for Fatone and McLean fans. Find out more about "A Legendary Night" tour and how to get tickets.

Joey Fatone and AJ McLean say 'Bye Bye Bye' to NSYNC and Backstreet Boys to bring own show to Nashville

"this tour gives us the chance to combine the best of both musical worlds.".

nsync backstreet boy tour 2024 tickets

While fans await an announcement of possible Backstreet Boys and NSYNC reunions, members Joey Fatone from NYSNC and AJ McLean from Backstreet Boys have joined forces to create a limited-city tour full of fan-favorite songs and boy band dance moves. The show, dubbed "A Legendary Night" will come to Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on June 28.

The show is part comedy, part music and part conversation with never-before told stories of their time on the road. The two will perform classic hits from both bands backed up by a seven-piece live band.

"I’ve known AJ as long as I’ve known my own band members," Fatone said in a statement. "We’ve worked together in the past on one-off projects here and there but never had the opportunity to create something together. This tour gives us the chance to combine the best of both musical worlds. I hope our fans are ready for a show that'll take them on a journey through the magic of *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and everything-in-between."

Is NSYNC getting back together?

After reuniting at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards to present an award, and recording the song "Better Place" for the "Trolls Band Together" movie sequel, speculation has run rampant that the power boy band could be getting back together.

Back-story: Miss the VMAs? Check out the performances, NSYNC and Taylor Swift wins

NSYNC members  Justin Timberlake ,  Lance Bass ,  Joey Fatone ,  Chris Kirkpatrick  and  JC Chasez  took to the VMA stage to present the  best pop award to none other than Taylor Swift.

However, no official announcements about a reunion have been made.

The original run of "A Legendary Night" shows was nine cities, but due to a number of them selling out, 20 additional cities have been added, including Nashville's Ryman date.

"I thought we would just do a few shows to have some fun but the response so far has been humbling to say the least," Fatone continued.

McLean states, "I'm so excited to head out for this round of dates with my friend Joey. The perfect chance to listen to old favorites and share some special new songs that our loyal fans will be the first to hear!"

If you were a fan of boy bands in the 2000s, you won't want to miss this legendary tour!

AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys and Joey Fatone of NSYNC are teaming up for a run of shows across the U.S.! The duo appeared on Tuesday’s episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show” to drop details about what fans can expect on their A Legendary Night Tour, which kicked off in Temecula, California on March 15.

“What they can expect is a lot of fun,” said Joey, who reveals that the show is a mixture of “old-school stuff” and “new-school stuff.”

Both he and AJ are big fans of ‘80s music, so they cover a bunch of hits from that decade, along with alternative tunes from the ‘90s including Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Green Day’s “Basketcase.”

For AJ, the tour is a great opportunity to showcase his original material outside of Backstreet Boys. “I’m finally doing my first ever solo album,” he told Jennifer Hudson . He performs three of his own songs, including his single “Electric” and a song called “Arizona” that he describes as “a tearjerker” and “a fan favorite.”

Formed in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, U.S., the Backstreet Boys became a teen pop sensation in the late ‘90s for their brand of harmony-rich pop music, and continued into the new millennium later selling over 130 million records worldwide.

After undertaking auditions held by ’90’s boyband mogul Lou Pearlman in 1992, Backstreet Boys, consisting of Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, and Nick Carter, officially formed on April 20 1993. The group’s debut live performance was at SeaWorld Orlando and was followed by a string of shows in Florida from shopping malls to high schools. After signing with Zomba/Jive Records in 1994, Backstreet Boys released their 1995 debut album “Backstreet Boys” in Europe and Canada to considerable success. Despite the popular international singles “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” and “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, the Backstreet Boys didn’t find success in the U.S. until the year after.

The band’s sophomore international release “Backstreet’s Back” coincided with their U.S. debut “Backstreet Boys”, both of which earned considerable chart and sales success. Spawning the hits “Quit Playin’ (With My Heart)”, “As Long as You Love Me”, “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back), and “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, the U.S. album propelled the group to teen pop stardom, later selling over 14 million copies.

“Millennium” was released in 1999 after a heated debacle with manager Pearlman regarding royalties. The album topped the U.S. album charts with sales of over one million in its first week of release, aided by the singles “I Want It That Way”, “Larger Than Life”, and “Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely”. After “Christmas Album” was released at the tail end of 1999, and the album “Black & Blue” was issued in 2000 to similar success as its predecessors, the band took a break which lasted until 2004.

Backstreet Boys’ comeback album “Never Gone” arrived in 2005 and marked a change in style for the band however still sold over 10 million copies worldwide. After a subsequent tour and the departure of Richardson, Backstreet Boys returned to the studio. The result of which was “Unbreakable”, released in October 2007, the album debuted at No. seven on the Billboard 200 and was supported by a worldwide tour including Australia, Japan, Asia and Mexico. The band’s seventh studio album “This is Us” arrived two years later in 2009, spawning the hits “Straight Through My Heart” and “Bigger”. “In a World Like This” was issued in 2013 and marked the group’s first self-released album, followed by the documentary movie “Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of” in 2015.

Live reviews

Backstreet Boys, the American vocal group were a household name during their heyday in the mid-90's and now celebrating their 20th anniversary the band continues to play live to their devoted fan base. There are few bands who can boast the same amount of nostalgia as Back Street Boys, and the cheers that lift the roof at their appearance is proof there is still a huge demand to see this iconic group perform their plethora of hits.

Their shows are no longer about the complex dance routines synonymous with the boy band, but moreover the brilliant vocal harmonies on fan favourites such as 'As Long As You Love Me'. The crowd erupts in cheers for classics such as 'I Want It That Way' and 'The One' as they proudly sing along as the boys command the stage and maintain the party anthem.

The finale of 'Backstreet's Back' is an energetic party anthem and the group even breaks out one of the classic dance routines for the special occasion. A concert filled with nostalgic unashamed power pop leaves the audience thrilled.

The Backstreet Boys are the boy band of my generation, so obviously I was going to LOVE LOVE LOVE every moment of their Las Vegas residency. What I did not expect was to be blown away by the sheer talent of it all. BSB can really sing, dance, chit chat, and the songs? the songs are still amazing.

Despite the fact that they're playing in a huge theater, to 7000 people the show felt intimate. They even came into the stands, I was in section 205 and when they came down and I got Nick Carter. I started shrieking because that's my favorite BSB member. So it was wonderful and fun.

Logistically, they played for 90 solid minutes, and had a 2 song encore. They started promptly at 9:30. First song was Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely and last song (encore) was Eveybody (Backstreet's Back).

I absolutely and totally loved the show and with this I can finally say all my 5th grade dreams have come true.

Oh my good. The Backstreet boys were awesome. They are definitly like a fine wine, they get better with age. They brought out all their hits. It'll definitly have you feeling 13 again. They sing a few songs from their new album (I mean it is the In a world like this tour) If you dont have it go get it. It's a mature album but it definitly has that b ackstreet sound. Watching the guys interact on stage is fun and the crowds energy is crazy. They do a set with instruments, it's impressive. They don't get enough credit for their talent. Oh and don't get me started on the VIP meet and greet. They are so sweet. They do a great job of making each and every fan feel special while moving it along quickly. I can't wait for their next tour.

The backstreet boys were awesome!!! This was my second time seeing them, I went to their concert last year as well. They played a lot of old awesome songs like: Show me the meaning of being lonely, don't want you back, all I have to give, I want it that way and a lot more! But they did play songs from their new album as well. They were also very entertaining to watch. If you're a backstreet boys fan I totally recommend seeing them in concert because I'm a fan and I absolutely loved it and had a great time!

Amazing show from start to finish. The show felt really intimate even though it was at a big venue. The guys sounded great and showed they can still hit those notes while dancing. They worked hard for this tour and you can tell. All of the dance moves and videos , included with the shows was a surprise and add to the already awesome show, I can’t wait to see them again!!!

This was an absolutely amazing show! BSB did not fail to disappoint. I saw them several years ago when they came to Hershey with NKOTB, and as fantastic as that show was, this one was even better. I already can not wait for them to come back to Philly, and I am definitely purchasing their new album to add to my collection.

Backstreet Boys at 30: Debbie Gibson, Joey Fatone, Friends, Family, Fans, Execs and More Share Their Memories

" I hope I can do the same one day," Joey Fatone thought while watching the Backstreet Boys play one of their first major gigs in the early ‘90s. The Florida-based boy band were finding their feet in the music industry, while Fatone was yet to discover his own boy band path with NSYNC.

"I remember seeing them perform at SeaWorld Orlando, way back before Brian [Littrell] joined the group, and I thought, ‘Wow, they're going to fulfill their dream. I hope I can do the same,'" recalls Fatone, who would develop lifelong friendships with the band and has just launched a tour with BSB's AJ McLean , despite the groups being touted as rivals throughout the years. McLean was also in the audience at NSYNC's recent L.A. reunion during Justin Timberlake's show at the Wiltern. "I love that we have this friendship now and wish we had it when we first met because we could've done a lot more together. They're great guys and great entertainers."

Being great entertainers not only helped McLean, Littrell, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter reach dizzying heights of success by the late ‘90s - and the quintet has weathered the post-pandemonium decades as well, racking up Grammy nominations, sellout tours a major Las Vegas residency and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Now, as they prepare to wrap up their 30 th anniversary celebrations with April's ‘Backstreet's Back at the Beach' fan vacation at Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico, we chatted to 30 friends, family members, musicians, colleagues and even former flames to uncover behind-the-scenes stories from the group's 30-year run.

Angel Conrad, Carter's sister "My brother joined BSB when I was four and I remember going to the studio one time, and Kevin took me to lunch. I was around eight and remember driving in his car, listening to music. The bass was so loud and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! We went to lunch with his mom and it was such a memorable day. He took care of me like a brother would.

"As a little girl, my first concert was BSB and a few years ago, my husband Corey and I took our daughter to her first concert - at six months old - and it was also BSB! It's full circle for us and makes me realize how long BSB has been a part of the family."

Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty frontman and solo artist "It was my first and only time at the Kentucky Derby and it was such a mix of people. I was with the Backstreet Boys and everybody seemed to get the same memo because we all dressed like we were at a polo match – except Kid Rock, who was wearing Kid Rock attire. There were country stars, reality stars and me and the guys in BSB - we were surprised we didn't know each other since we're all from Orlando.

"When we finally met, there was a sense of already knowing each other. They're just nice, normal guys. And now, I get Christmas card from Howie and his beautiful family every year."

Andreas Carlsson, Songwriter, "I Want It That Way" "My first encounter with the Backstreet Boys was opening for them on their first Sweden show at Solnahallen arena in 1996. That night, you couldn't fit another screaming teenager in with a shoehorn. I was unaware of their popularity even though I was working at [the Swedish hit factory] Cheiron Studios, but that night it became evident that my future should lie in songwriting rather than being an artist. I think I was eventually booed off the stage!"

"We had so many fun moments together, especially at the Sheraton Hotel in Stockholm, where the band occupied a whole floor. Around midnight, that floor turned into a wild frat party. Everyone wanted an invite – even the Princess of Sweden.  I also remember going to a costume party at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles with Howie and AJ, where Howie dressed as AJ and vice versa. Great times!"

Debbie Gibson, musician "I met the guys when we shared a trailer for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1997 and we instantly hit it off. They were just breaking with their first single and I was starring in " Beauty and the Beast" on Broadway. Over the years, I became great friends with Howie, attending his wedding and writing a great song called ‘The Last Word' on his tour bus. The guys are proof that talent and hard work can sustain a career. There's no smoke and mirrors … just willingness to work hard and re-invent to stay current in pop music.

"Fun fact: Howie and I had a brief dating foray! I'll always have a soft spot for him and he's forever my favorite Backstreet Boy."

Johnny Wright, AJ McLean's manager and former Backstreet Boys manager, Wright Entertainment Group "The first time I met the Backstreet Boys was at an Italian restaurant in Orlando. The room had a table set for 12 people, but there was only one person at the table – Lou Pearlman. It looked like a scene from ‘ The Godfather.' He told me to sit down, we chatted, then I started hearing voices singing a familiar song. I turned and five young guys walked in singing Shai's ‘If I Ever Fall in Love.' I was so impressed. The next day I was part of their management." Jeff Timmons, 98 Degrees musician "Right before we got signed, we met our future manager after sneaking backstage at a Boyz II Men concert. He said he'd give us a shot at singing the National Anthem at the Puyallup Fair in Washington, where his client Montell Jordan was performing. We made the 17-hour drive from Los Angeles, got there and sang, but noticed another group with 30 screaming girls following them everywhere. They got on stage and did their thing and I remember going, ‘Man, I hope we have those kinds of fans one day!' It was the Backstreet Boys."

Jamie Hartman , "Don't Go Breaking My Heart' co-writer/ producer "I was a massive fan and ‘As Long As You Love Me' was one of my favorite songs, so getting to work with them was great fun. Stu [Crichton], Wrabel and I wrote the song and Stu instantly said, ‘It's right for the Backstreet Boys.' They came into Westlake Studios and everyone was super-cool - it was good old-fashioned hard work from humble guys who threw their parts down brilliantly.

"They all brought their individual flavor, which reinforced why they work so well together. The blend was so great. We wrote that track with big group harmony parts in mind and took the time to choose who did which parts. Kevin created the vocoder on the bridge. We call it the Kevcoder!"

Delta Goodrem, musician "I grew up absolutely loving BSB so I was particularly excited to open for them on the DNA World Tour, sharing the stage with a band that's been a huge part of the soundtrack to my life. One of my favorite moments was when Brian jumped onstage during my set and started singing with me. The crowd went nuts! And Howie wearing my merch on-stage was spectacular – a full-circle, pinch-me moment. I was in the audience feeling like a teenage girl!"

Gary Baker, producer/songwriter "I first met them at the Fox Theater in Atlanta after a song I wrote for them, ‘Anywhere for You,' became a hit overseas. It was around the time All 4 One's ‘I Swear,' which I wrote, was massive so they introduced me to the stage and sang a little of ‘I Swear.' I remember being in New York's Battery Studios when they were huge in Germany but had nothing in America and Brian was like, ‘Help us get a hit. We've got to break here!' I didn't have anything do with that hit, but was grateful to have a song on [the 1999 album] ‘ Millennium.'

"They quickly blew up and one time Howie and I were at lunch and had to call the police to escort us out because 400 girls were outside. But no matter how big they became, they remained down-to-earth. They'd attend my son's little league games, read to them, and Kevin was at both my children's weddings. He and Brian also inducted me into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. It's been amazing working with them from the very beginning."

Jesse McCartney, musician "I had the great pleasure of touring with them twice over their 30-year career and never have I seen a group of people in an audience sing songs louder or more passionately than at a Backstreet Boys concert."

Ryan Cabrera, musician "I met Nick in the early 2000s when we were all out on the town, back when Hollywood nightclubs were at their best, and I'd run into the other cats in Grammy rooms or radio shows. I love that they all have such different personalities. AJ has become one of my golf buddies and I remember playing with him for the first time - he's way better than me, yet somehow, I was whoopin' him and he quit halfway through because I was giving him so much shit. I'm yet to beat him since!"

Joe Riccitelli, record executive, Goldn Retriever Ent. "I met the guys at their Boston Garden show, early on the ‘ Millennium' tour. My first impression was their live show and the fans' reaction. Before joining Jive Records in 1999, I had worked with U2 and thought those fans were absolutely bonkers – I really wasn't prepared for the Backstreet Boys fans! What strikes me most is the boys' resiliency. They've always amazed me with their ability to stay driven, hungry and passionate to their fans and their craft."

Andrew Fromm, Songwriter on "Millennium" "I remember meeting the guys at Battery Studios when they were recording ‘I'll Never Break Your Heart.' Nick was playing pool and we talked about music that inspired him, like Chicago, Richard Marx and Journey. I told him I loved the same artists and ‘I Need You Tonight' came from that inspiration.

"Back then, the guys complained their friends didn't believe how famous they were overseas. When they landed overseas, they were bombarded with thousands of fans at the airport, but when they came home it was crickets. That soon changed! One time, I was with Howie at the ‘ Today' show and thousands of fans broke through the barriers. I got pinned against the bus, then suddenly these big arms grabbed my collar and I got hoisted over the fans and saved by his bodyguard."

David Broer-LeRoux, Art Director, "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" video

"I was decorating a house in Culver City when I got a page from the production office working on the Backstreet Boys' new video. The art department was falling apart due to lack of sleep and they needed help. I met the boys the next day.

"The funniest moment came just before the final banquet scene with the rats - I doubled as rat wrangler on that shoot. The boys were okay-ish with rats, but not the ladies. They were freaking out, so I joked the rats were SAG [union members] while the extras weren't, which made everyone laugh and averted the revolt. The rats ran along trails of watermelon juice I'd laid down - the rat peering into the goblet [in the video] was going after a piece I put inside. Rats will do anything for watermelon!"

Eddie Meehan,   CEO of fan engagement company Please & Thank You "I met Howie when he had a management company and was working with the Clique Girls, who Interscope hired me to work with, then Backstreet brought me on after Kevin left. From the moment I met them, I forgot they were famous - you meet Rod Stewart and it's like, ‘Holy moly, it's Rod Stewart,' but with these guys it was just like, ‘What's up?'

"The sheer scale of their popularity is breathtaking. There's been three different times when fans in non-English speaking countries told me how they grew up extremely poor but learned how to speak English through Backstreet Boys albums, went on to become translators or teachers."

Jonathan Knight, New Kids on the Block musician "I met them after New Kids ended and Lou Pearlman asked me to come to Florida and help them. At first, I was a little jealous because I thought, ‘Who are these kids? Are they trying to take over our spot?' But we had already broken up and they were the sweetest kids. They were so excited and curious and had so many questions for me. I connected with Howie right away - he loves everybody! - and AJ was dating my friend's daughter, so I got to know him well.

"But the coolest thing that came out of these friendships was our NKOTBSB tour - it was one of the pinnacles of my career. I remember us all walking down the catwalk and it just felt so cool, like we were this big boy band posse."

Sonia Benezra, media personality "I was hosting a popular talk show and convinced the network I should do a special on this up-and-coming band, the Backstreet Boys. I met them at Quebec airport and they were shy, excited, respectful kids. I'll never forget walking into AJ's room and seeing cans of nutrition supplements and weightlifting stuff and he was like, ‘I want to build muscle, so I can be strong on-stage!' Kevin was the big brother – quiet, pensive and reflective with a calming aura the boys gravitated to for advice and protection. Brian was another brother-type. Nick was the little heartthrob, who wasn't quite sure what he was getting into, but excited nonetheless. Howie and I had a special bond. I liked his soul and he never tried to steal the spotlight.

"I knew there was something magical about these boys. When most kids start out, they just want fame, but they wanted to make good music and do good things. Somehow Lou Pearlman, as bad as he was, picked the right boys to bring together. They shared values and leaned on each other. When AJ had trouble with [substance abuse], Kevin helped pull him back into reality. And I sometimes wonder how Nick would've turned out had he not had these boys to lean on.

"Two years ago, there was a 34-year-old Quebec woman, Caroline Gauthier, on television because she'd chosen doctor-assisted suicide since her cancer had returned. She talked about how she listened to Backstreet Boys daily. I reached out to Howie and management and next thing Caroline emailed me showing me messages they'd taped for her. She said it changed everything for her and she was leaving at peace and with great joy. That's the Backstreet Boys in a nutshell."

Eddie Volkman, Program Director/Content Manager, Star 96.7, WSSR-FM

"I had met them in 1996 when my station, B96 in Chicago, was one of the first to jump on their music. Two years later, my then-girlfriend Amber and I did a meet-and-greet and afterwards, AJ McLean said, ‘Wait up.' The guys formed a semi-circle around Amber, dropped to one knee and sang ‘A Toast to Our Love,' then AJ said, ‘Amber, will you marry Eddie?' She stood giggling until AJ went, ‘Yes or no? Because we have to go on-stage.' She said ‘Yes' and everyone cheered.

"My wife never liked surprises and after they left, she cracked me over the head with her $40 souvenir program and said, ‘I'm gonna kill you.' But once the shock wore off, she spent half the concert on her phone telling friends what had happened."

Devon Daniels, fan in "I Want It That Way" video

"For a 17-year-old, boy band-crazed junior, this was my 15 minutes of fame – I couldn't possibly know they would last 25 years! The filming was something every millennial's dreams were made of. We interacted with the guys and I was starstruck watching legendary director Wayne Isham. I never dreamed my close-up would be shown twice. While the now-iconic imagery of girls screaming in an airplane hangar has become emblematic of early 2000s pop music, we never realized we were playing a role in music history. This was our generation's version of girls fainting over the Beatles.

"In 2021, I posted a video about the filming on TikTok and received thousands of comments from people delighted to learn more about ‘that screaming blonde girl' in the video. Some said they'd wondered where I was now (I'm an author and wrote a Backstreet Boys joke into my first book). I even received comments from the Backstreet Boys. If you'd told 17-year-old me that one day Nick Carter would be thanking  her  for being in their video, I wouldn't have believed you. ‘I Want It That Way' reminds us of a more innocent, simpler, safe and hopeful time."

Charlotte Weinckoski, Dorough and wife Leigh's business partner in handbag line ESLLA

" My husband met Leigh and invited her and Howie to come for dinner. I was going through chemo, had lost my hair and wasn't feeling my best, so felt unbelievably nervous and wasn't sure what how I'd relate to Howie, Leigh and their celebrity lifestyle. I was immediately struck by how kind, grounded and humble they were. Howie could see I was nervous and went out of his way to make me feel comfortable … in my own home! Within minutes we were talking and laughing and it felt like we'd known them for years."

Cara Wodnicki, AJ McLean's publicist, CSW Publicity "I was working in PR in New York and my boss told me I'd be joining a business meeting, but that she'd surprise me with who it was. When I walked in, I did everything in my power to hold it together. I must've handled my surprise well because 13 years later, we're still working together. I may never live those fangirl days down, but I wouldn't trade them for anything."

"My passion for music and the reason I work in this industry can be credited to these five guys, who pulled at every little string of my 13-year-old heart. As a born-and-bred Montrealer, I got to know the Backstreet Boys before they broke Stateside and there are incredible memories from performances at MusiquePlus and sold-out nights at the Molson Centre during an epic ice storm. Here's to the next 30 years!"

The black crowes impress as ‘happiness bastards’ tour rocks and rolls on.

The Black Crowes perform on stage in support of their ninth studio album 'Happiness Bastards,' now ... [+] available via Silver Arrow Records. Friday, April 19, 2024 at Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL

“Alright!” shouted a clearly excited Chris Robinson last week as the Black Crowes performed on stage in Chicago. “Friday night at the rock and roll show!”

Following last month’s release of their latest studio album Happiness Bastards , their ninth, the Crowes performed Friday night in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom about halfway through the U.S. leg of their current tour, a lengthy jaunt set to take them abroad next month ahead of fall and winter dates in support of Aerosmith’s rescheduled “Peace Out” North American farewell tour.

“When we saw we were coming back to the Aragon, we were very excited,” said Robinson late, noting the group’s first performance in the picturesque room in almost 25 years. “And we’re very excited to have Glyders opening for us. They’re from this town, check them out,” he continued, lauding the work of the Chicago-based, psychedelic garage rock trio (as a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry looked on from the venue’s balcony).

Over the course of 35 minutes, Glyders offered up a rewarding, lo-fi opening set.

“Cheers, everyone!” said bassist Eliza Weber early. Singer/guitarist Joshua Condon and drummer Joe Seger would soon find a groove during standout tracks like “Geneva Strangemod” and “High Time,” both from their 2023 full-length debut Maria’s Hunt.

Since we were first introduced in 1990, the Crowes have tallied a pair of platinum albums and three gold records, with Happiness Bastards , the group’s first studio album of original material in nearly 15 years, a worthy addition to their unique brand of southern-fried rock and roll.

“There’s a little town about 90 miles south of Atlanta called Macon, Georgia,” Robinson explained Friday night in Chicago, spotlighting the group’s roots. “Little Richard is from Macon. And the Allman Brothers Band,” he began, just one day removed from the death of co-founding Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. “But there’s another: the greatest soul singer of all time, Otis Redding,” he continued. “Well, we jumped on that song and it goes like this,” said Robinson, setting up a late take on one of the biggest Black Crowes hits in Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”

While recent tours celebrated their Shake Your Money Maker record, this one makes the case for the new project, with the Black Crowes performing six songs from it over the course of about 95 minutes on stage Friday in Chicago.

As they do on the album too, “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns,” two of Happiness Bastards ’ more rollicking moments, kicked things off Friday night.

Performing as an 8 piece group, drummer Cully Symington and keyboard player Erik Deutsch were set beside backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant atop a unique two-tiered stage built to resemble stacks upon stacks of vintage amplifiers and audio equipment.

Frontman Chris Robinson, who performed in front of a large mirror, was joined on stage by guitarists Rich Robinson and Nico Bereciartua as well as longtime bassist Sven Pipien. Festive lighting strung over, along and behind the stage flanked the group who performed under a massive “Happiness Bastards” banner hanging from the lighting rig over the stage.

“Good to see you all. Welcome to the ‘Happiness Bastards!’” said Chris early in Friday’s set. “We’ve got some new songs and we got some old ones - like this!” he said, shuffling left before pointing right at Rich on the slide guitar, ultimately bunnyhopping in reverse back to center stage as “Twice As Hard” rang out early in Chicago.

Robinson was in fine form Friday, a rejuvenated frontman shimmying about while delivering a still impressive lead vocal, with the new music cementing a once unthinkable rebirth for the Black Crowes, who’ve continually staked their claim as one of America’s best rock acts since reforming in 2019.

From 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm , “Nebakanezer” was an early highlight in Chicago. The gnarly dual guitar riffwork of “Horsehead,” from 1999’s By Your Side followed, providing one of Friday’s more rewarding one-two punches.

While “Oh Josephine” slowed things down momentarily, “Thorn in my Pride” found the group beginning to roll, with Chris on harmonica as the Crowes delivered an all hands, Stones-like jam to close the cut.

“Everyone say hello to Rich Robinson,” said Chris, gesturing toward his younger brother. With a wave of his right hand, Rich greeted the rapturuous Chicago crowd, soon strumming in the familiar opening licks to “She talks to Angels” on acoustic guitar.

From the new record, “Flesh Wound” followed, quickly proving to be a late high spot. The saccharine-drenched affair was a blast in the live setting, conjuring up the power pop stylings of Cheap Trick as the Black Crowes soared forward in fun fashion.

The brothers Robinson leaned in close, singing into the same mic during “Jealous Again” before closing with “Remedy,” with Chris back on harp as the new “Kindred Friend” wrapped things up in the Windy City.

“What is a band, other than something you dream up?” asked Chris rhetorically on stage in Chicago. “This band started in our mom and dad’s house in the 80s,” he continued, noting the pair’s humble roots. “And that dream will continue on.”

Mini Backstreet Boys (and Girls)! Meet the Kids of the Backstreet Boys

The boys of the band are all grown up — and raising supercute kids, too!

nsync backstreet boy tour 2024 tickets

Kevin Richardson/Instagram

The Backstreet Boys are now men — and dads to some pretty cute kids.

All five members of the ever-popular boy band —  Brian Littrell , Nick Carter , Kevin Richardson , AJ McLean and Howie Dorough — have become dads through the years, sharing family highlights on Instagram and even bringing their kids out on stage for some shows , giving fans glimpses as their "Backstreet Babies," as the singers have dubbed them.

“We have a family room backstage for the family and the wives and the kids to hang out in,”  Richardson told PEOPLE in 2018 of the group's tour setup. “It used to be the VIP room, stocked with alcohol for our friends and different people that come to see the show, but now it’s the family room.”

“It’s the VIB room, Very Important Baby,” joked Carter. “It’ll be daddy daycare.”

Here, get to know the kids of the Backstreet Boys.

Brian Littrell's Son: Baylee

Brian Littrell/Instagram

Brian Littrell 's son Baylee is now 21 years old, and hard at work on his own music career.

"I got to introduce my dad at 5 years old," Baylee told PEOPLE in 2023 . "And then when I was 10, I started opening up for them. I would sing two or three songs before the opener would come out and play their set. And then that transcended into 2019, being able to go on a 42-show run with them and be the official opening act. That was the experience of a lifetime."

"I've pretty much grown up on the road since I can remember. So my first crib was a bunk on a tour bus," he added. "So really, my first memories are being out on the road and being abroad."

Mom is Littrell's wife of 24 years , Leighanne.

Nick Carter's Kids: Odin, Saoirse and Pearl

Nick Carter/Instagram

The youngest member of Backstreet Boys, Nick Carter also has the youngest kids: daughters  Pearl , 3, and  Saoirse Reign , 4, plus son  Odin Reign , 8.

"You're learning on the job, you're figuring it all out. I love the challenge. I think it's great," Carter said on a 2022 episode of the Parents podcast "We Are Family." "It's a challenge and by the end of the day, I'm exhausted and I'm going to sleep and waking up early. I absolutely love it."

Of letting his kids follow in his famous footsteps, he added, "I want them to be able to be kids first and really enjoy that part of their lives. And then once you turn 18, if you want to do what you want to do, you can."

Mom is Carter's wife of 10 years, Lauren .

AJ McLean's Kids: Elliott and Lyric

Rochelle DeAnna/Instagram

“There’s nothing like a relationship between a daughter and a father,” AJ McLean told PEOPLE of his daughters Elliott , 11, and  Lyric , 7, whom he shares with his estranged wife, Rochelle . “They both have me wrapped around their finger.”

"Whatever journey both my girls have, I will be in their corner a million percent, [Rochelle] will be in their corner and support them, whatever their path is and whatever their journey is," he added in 2022 . "That's just the family that we are."

Howie Dorough's Kids: James and Holden

Howie Dorough/Instagram

Howie Dorough and wife  Leigh  share sons James , 14, and Holden , 11.

"I have taught my kids a couple of 'Backstreet's Back' moves," Howie Dorough admitted in a 2019 interview with Parents . "They don't get it exactly as good as Daddy but they're working on it."

But his larger-than-life career has been tempered in the best way by his kids, too. "When you've been an entertainer for so many years, it's easy to get lost in the lifestyle," he added.
