Before your Oklahoma vehicle registration expires, you must renew it with the OK Tax Commission (OTC).

Your OK Registration Renewal Notice

Before your vehicle registration expires, the Oklahoma Tax Commission will mail you a renewal notice .

If you prefer to receive your renewal notice by e-mail, visit the OTC Convenient Auto Renewal System (CARS) website to sign up for paperless notices. You'll receive a renewal reminder on the first day of the month your registration expires.

NOTE : If you have lost or never received a vehicle registration renewal notice, you can still renew your registration (see “ Renew Your OK Vehicle Registration " below).

Late Registration Renewal

You must renew your vehicle registration within 1 month after it expires or you will be charged late fees .

The Oklahoma DMV will charge you $1 per day until you reach a maximum late fee of $100.

If you renew your OK vehicle registration after it has expired, you will be charged:

• Your current registration fees .
• Additional registration fees. AND
• Any other applicable late fees .

You can renew your vehicle registration online if:

• You are renewing a standard license plate tag .
• Standard non-commercial vehicle .
• Commercial truck  (restrictions may apply see OKCars ).
• Farm truck ( restrictions may apply see OKCars ).

If you are not eligible to renew online, you must renew your vehicle registration either by mail or in person (see below).

To renew your Oklahoma vehicle registration online, visit the OTC CARS registration renewal website and provide:

• The last 4 digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN) .
• Your OK license plate/tag number .
• Your Agriculture Exemption Permit (SMX) number, if applicable.
• Your insurance information .
• Your Oklahoma driver's license number .
• Payment. (See “ Fees to Renew Your OK Vehicle Registration " below.)

You will need a printer if you wish to print your renewal receipt.

To renew your Oklahoma vehicle registration by mail or in person , you'll need :

• Your registration renewal notice . OR
• Your VIN , Oklahoma title number , or license plate number .
• Proof of your insurance policy.

Military Member Registration Renewal

If you are an active-duty military member, you can apply for a discounted $26 military registration fee . You can also have your late fees waived if you are out of state when your registration expires.

To apply, you'll need to submit a completed U.S. Armed Forces Affidavit (Form 779)* when you renew your registration (see “ Renew Your OK Vehicle Registration " above).

Fees to Renew Your OK Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration renewal fees in Oklahoma depend on how many years your vehicle has already been registered with the Oklahoma DMV:

• 1st through 4th year: $96.
• 5th through 8th year: $86.
• 9th through 12th year: $66.
• 13th through 16th year: $46.
• 17th year and over: $26.
• 1st through 4th year of vehicle registration: $99.
• 5th through 8th year: $89.
• 9th through 12th year: $69.
• 13th through 16th year: $49.
• 17th year and over: $29.

Other fees :

• License plate decal mail fee : $1.55.
• License plate and sticker mail fee : $5.
• Vehicle insurance processing fee: $1.50.
• Late fee (if more than 1 month past due): $1 per day (up to a maximum of $100).
• Discounted military member fee: $26.

Acceptable Forms of Payment

For online vehicle registration renewals, the Oklahoma Tax Commission accepts payment by:

• Credit/debit card (American Express, VISA, MasterCard and Discover).

For vehicle registration renewals by mail , the Oklahoma DMV accepts checks made payable to the “Oklahoma Tax Commission." You must include your OK driver's license number on the check.

With Service Oklahoma, Oklahomans can renew their driver license as well as vehicle and boat registration online; those looking for their first driver license or transitioning from another state must make an in-person appearance.

Kerbs and Hall began exploring ways to modernize and standardize how we provide services to Oklahoma citizens in 2019. Together, they led a bipartisan working group with the objective of offering Oklahomans a more efficient system for receiving driver license and motor vehicle services.

On May 19th 2022, Governor Kevin Stitt signed into law HB3419 which established Service Oklahoma after nearly one year of hard work by Representative Dell Kerbs and Senator Chuck Hall.

Kerbs and Hall began exploring ways to modernize and standardize how services are delivered to Oklahomans in 2019. Working as part of a bipartisan working group, their goal was to offer Oklahomans an easier system for receiving driver license and motor vehicle services.

Oklahomans can renew their driver license and registrations online for vehicles and boats registered to them; new applicants or those from another state transferring must appear in person to complete these processes.

Oklahomans can renew their driver license as well as registrations for vehicles and boats online. Newcomers to Oklahoma or those transferring from another state will need to appear in person for this process.

"Our intent here was for both entities to focus on their core missions - public safety for one and customer service for another," Doyle stated.

Oklahoma residents looking to renew or obtain Real IDs will still need to visit one of the 33 Department of Public Safety locations statewide in order to do so, though both their information and employees have moved over to Service Oklahoma.

The new entity assumed responsibility with an aim to address Oklahomans' frustration with long lines, wait times and delays when applying for or renewing driver's licenses.

Oklahomans looking for Real ID or renewing their driver's license have begun using a new government entity this week.

This new entity plans on adding more services and locations over time, as well as plans to bring on board tag agencies already operating under it.

Service Oklahoma

Registration

Oklahoma registration, non-commercial.

Noncommercial registration rates apply to automobiles; noncommercial and non agricultural trucks; travel trailers and motor homes.

Noncommercial vehicles are registered on the basis of their year of registration.

1st – 4th year           $96.00

5th – 8th year          $86.00

9th – 12th year         $66.00

13th – 16th year       $46.00

17th year +                $26.00

Electric or Hybrid

Legislation took effect November of last year that add extra fees to plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. The fees are based on the weight of the vehicle and are paid in addition to the vehicles registration.

Farm trucks are trucks or truck tractors utilized primarily in an agricultural capacity. The annual registration fee is $41.00.

To qualify for farm truck registration, one (1) of the following must be presented:

• Current Agriculture Exemption Permit (SMX) issued by the Oklahoma Tax Commission
• Schedule F from the most recent tax year federal income tax return

Commercial trailers are registered for an initial fee of $51.00 and an annual renewal fee of $4.00. 

Farm trailers may, at the option of the owner, be registered only (no title issued) for an annual fee of $12.00.

Noncommercial trailers, such as utility and boat trailers may be registered only (no title issued) for an annual fee of $12.00.

Two Year Registration

Starting November 1, 2023 most vehicles can now be registered for a two year period. For example a vehicle expiring in 2023 can be renewed up through 2025 instead of 2024. The renewal amount will be doubled (registration, insurance, state public safety fee) although if your vehicle would have dropped down in price within that two year period that discounted price will be reflected for one years worth. The breakdown of two year registration cost can be found on the renewal notice the state provides. The vehicles that are eligible are: automobiles, motorcycle, autocycle, street legal UTV (not the first time), motor home (RV), travel trailer, private trailer, farm trailer, construction machinery, mobile chapel, exempt trailers, forest trailers, park models, and special mobilized trailers. Vehicles that are NOT eligible are standard UTV, first time street legal UTV, boat, motor, commercial trailer, commercial rental trailer, manufactured homes, and off road motorcycles.

Specialty Plate

Specialty plates are decorative license plates you can purchase through a tag agency or DPS. Most are purely decorative but some, like the handicapped, serve a purpose. Some prenumbered plates are carried in tag agencies: Thunder, OU, OSU, In God We Trust, Monarch Butterfly, and Pioneers of the Prarie. Others need a request form printed out and mailed to Oklahoma Tax Commision or requested through the OkCars website . If the license plate is associated with a fraternity, vocational group, or another similar organization you may be required to show affiliation. They need to be registered every year and they cost extra on top of the vehices normal registration, they do not replace a vehicles normal registration. They cost anywhere from $15-$45 annually. Street Legal UTV

Oklahoma law has changed and UTV’s with the proper additions can now be registered for street use. To obtain registration you need the title, valid Oklahoma insurance, and a form stating you have made the proper adjustments. If your title is being held by a lien holder you can come in three business days after your title was processed with the registration instead. The cost can range from $50-$125 depending on the year and model.

Buying Cars Out of State

Vehicles that have been bought out of state can be registered and titled in Oklahoma at our tag agency. For vehicles that have been bought out of state the title, Oklahoma insurance, and a valid ID is required. If it was bought from a dealership the itemized bill of sale is required, otherwise a declaration of purchase price form can be filled out here. You will pay both excise and sales tax along with registration and miscellaneous fees so it will be  the same as titling a car you bought in Oklahoma. Regardless of how long the state you bought your vehicle in has to register and title vehicles you will need to do it within 30 days to avoid penalty in Oklahoma. Sometimes out of state dealers will collect money from you for your Oklahoma taxes and will mail your title packet and check to a tag agency for them to process. You will need to be aware of this and look out for a call from a tag agency in order to finalize your title. You will also need to be aware if you need to fill out a sales tax waiver for the taxes of the state you are buying the car in. An application for Oklahoma title and a VIN inspection is also required which can be completed here. If the car is not present the VIN inspection can be delayed, but you will not receive your physical title until the inspection is complete.  

Same Owner Out of State

Vehicles that have been registered out of state can be registered and titled in Oklahoma at our tag agency. You will need either a copy of registration or the title both in your name, Oklahoma insurance, and a valid ID is required. An application for Oklahoma title and a VIN inspection (Form 701-6) is also required which can be completed here or brought in and filled out. Additional paperwork (Form 797-B) is required if the vehicle currently has an active out of state lien. All of these forms require the current owners signature to be notarized. If the car is not present the VIN inspection can be delayed, but you will not receive your physical title until the inspection is complete. If you brought in an out of state registration card in lieu of a title your Oklahoma title will be on hold until the out of state title has been turned in to Oklahoma. You will pay registration, title, transfer, tire waste, and a few other small fees. You will not pay excise or sales tax if it is already titled in your name. Most out of state same owner transfers are between $100-200 although some factors can change that price. You have 30 days from the entry date of the car to register it in Oklahoma before incurring penalty. 

Temporary Registration

Temporary registration can be issued in specific cases. If an individual is selling to another individual and there is proof of a lien (the car being financed) then a temporary tag can be issued. The temporary tag is a singular piece of paper that shows registration for 30 days. Proof of individual sale can be either a notarized bill of sale or a notarized title. Proof of financing can be the lien paperwork you get at tag agencies or paperwork you get from the lien holder direct. However, the lien can not be done at the same time as the temporary registration.

Oklahoma Vehicle Registration Renewal Guide

How to renew a car registration in oklahoma.

The Tax Commission of Oklahoma will mail out a notice to you before your registration is set to expire. If you would like to receive this notice through email you can go to the CARS website and sign up to receive paperless notices.

You must renew your Oklahoma vehicle registration within a month after it has expired or you will have to pay late charges. The late fees are $1 a day until the maximum amount of $100 is reached.

If you wait for over a year to renew your registration, you will have to pay the current registration fees, plus fees for an additional year, and late fees.

Residents can renew their registration online if it has been less than 10 months since their registration expired and he or she is renewing any type of standard vehicle. To renew online you will need to visit the CARS website and follow the instructions that are provided.

Renewing Your Oklahoma Vehicle Registration By Mail

In order to renew your registration in person or through the mail you will need to bring the following:

• Renewal notice or license plate number or title number or VIN
• Proof of auto insurance
• Payment for your registration renewal fees

Replacement Vehicle Registration vs. Registration Renewal

Replacing your car registration is only necessary when it has been lost or stolen. Likewise, you will only need to replace your license plates or car tag if they have been lost, damaged, or stolen. Renewals, however, must be performed by the expiration date on your vehicle registration card.

The process for renewal is different than the process for a replacement, and knowing the difference can help you acquire the proper paperwork for each situation.

How to Replace Your Vehicle Registration in Oklahoma

If you need to replace your Oklahoma vehicle registration, you can do so either in-person or by mail. You cannot, however, receive a duplicate license plate if your tags were seized and you have not paid all applicable fees. In such cases, you must also receive a release from your county sheriff department.

To renew your car registration in-person, you will need to visit your local tag office. When you arrive, you must fill out the appropriate forms as well as pay any required fees.

How to Request a Replacement Car Tag

If your car tag or license plate is lost or stolen, you may obtain a replacement either in-person or by mail. To apply for a replacement, you must do the following:

• Fill out the appropriate form(s).
• Provide proof of valid car insurance.
• Pay any applicable replacement fees. The fee for a replacement decal is $9.00 plus $1.50 insurance fee. The fee for a replacement plate and decal is $9.50 plus $1.50 insurance fee.

If you are submitting your application by mail, you should address your completed application and any applicable fees to the Motor Vehicle Division of the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

What to Do if Your Vehicle Plates or Sticker Are Stolen

Have you recently lost your Oklahoma vehicle registration? Have you been the victim of a license plate or sticker theft?

If either of these situations applies to you, you will need to request replacements. Similarly, if your plates are damaged, you should also contact your local tag office to request replacements. You may surrender them at your local tag agency if you choose. Doing so will ensure they are dealt with appropriately, however, surrendering your old plates is not required in the state of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Car, RV Owners Big Winners in Tag Bill

Annual license plate fees may soon be measured in dozens rather than hundreds of dollars, allowing Oklahomans to enjoy some of the cheapest car tags in the country. Already approved by the House, HB 1734 will be heard by the Senate Monday.

The legislation would slash the cost of car tags, switching to a flat annual fee instead of the current method of calculating a percentage of a vehicle's value. The change would save Oklahomans hundreds of dollars each year, especially owners of recreational vehicles who can typically pay more than a thousand dollars to renew their license plate annually.

"Oklahomans won't have to take out a second-mortgage anymore just to afford their license plate. When all is said and done, we'll have some of the cheapest car tags in the country. Oklahoma's image as the state with the expensive car tags will be shattered forever," said Senator Stratton Taylor, Senate President Pro Tempore.

Under HB 1734, the flat tag fees would be calculated on the age of a vehicle. For example, for vehicles five years old or less, annual tags would cost $85. For vehicles between six and ten years of age, a tag would cost $45. Any vehicle older than ten years would qualify for a $15 tag.

Some examples include:

New car (year 1)

Sale price: $25,000 (year 6)

New RV (year 1)

Sale price: $80,000 (year 6)

Used car, Four years old (year 1 for new owner)

Sale price: $9,000 (year 2)

"We're talking about a huge chunk of savings for Oklahoma motorists. They'll see their tag fees plummet overnight," said Taylor.

In order to cut car tags without taking money from such services as education and road construction, HB 1734 raises vehicle excise taxes slightly to keep the legislation revenue neutral. The excise tax would be shifted from 3.25 percent to 4.5 percent, but it would be applied to the actual sales price, minus any trade-in value, rather than the current system of basing the tax on the sticker price.

Even with the slight increase, Oklahomans will still pay some of the lowest excise and tag fees in the region.

"Even with the adjustment, we still end up with some of the lowest tag and excise fees in the region," noted Taylor.

In addition to giving Oklahomans a break on tag fees, the legislation would also discourage motorists from illegally registering their cars and trucks as commercial vehicles or registering in other states just to get a cheaper tag.

"By cutting the cost of car tags drastically, there won't be any incentive to evade our laws," said Taylor.

Despite the obvious benefits of the legislation, Governor Keating and legislative Republicans have expressed opposition. They are pushing a slightly different bill, one that has their names at the top of it.

"This is all about ego and pride of ownership. The Republicans want to be the ones who can say 'we cut car tags' and they don't want to share the spotlight with any other legislators. I'd hate to see us squander a golden opportunity to save Oklahoma motorists money just because some politicians are worried about who will get credit for it," said Taylor.

"I would urge both Republican legislators and Governor Keating to put their partisan concerns aside and do the right thing for the people of Oklahoma. There will be plenty of credit to go around. I would think they'd rather be remembered as the people who helped cut car tags rather than the ones who blocked it."

Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma renew plate agreement amid broader controversy over tribal tags

The car tag agreement between the state of Oklahoma and the Choctaw Nation will last at least 10 more years.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Choctaw Chief Gary Batton agreed to renew the compact without substantive changes, according to records made public Monday. The deal caps a yearlong controversy over the future of the compact, one of three car tag agreements signed between the state and tribal nations. Batton and Stitt also recently agreed to extend a state-tribal tobacco tax agreement.

“Intergovernmental cooperation between our tribe and the state was the norm for many years, and we think this is a prime example of coming together with mutual respect to create better conditions for all people,” Batton said in a written statement about the car tag compact.

Under the agreement, the state will continue issuing license plates directly to Choctaw citizens through 2034. Most of the money collected from the sales goes toward road improvements. A fraction goes back to the tribe, which then rebates the money to tribal citizens.

Stitt said he was grateful officials representing the Choctaw Nation and the neighboring Chickasaw Nation were willing to work out long-term agreements with the state. The Chickasaw Nation compact, which also calls for the state to issue plates directly to tribal citizens, was renewed in January.

“These compacts continue the existing commitment to transparency and public safety,” Stitt said in a written statement. 

Gov. Stitt criticized license plates issued by other Oklahoma tribal nations

The governor went on to signal that he would continue to criticize license plates issued by other tribal nations, however. The state’s new cashless tolls cannot read those plates, a repeated concern for Stitt. The system only recognizes Choctaw Nation and Chickasaw Nation tags, because the state issues those plates directly. Stitt said that arrangement is a model that “prioritizes the safety of law enforcement and ensures our turnpike authority can collect tolls on all drivers who travel on our turnpikes.”

The governor added that he is open to signing on to similar compacts with “any tribal government seeking to issue tribal tags.” No tribal leader has expressed interest in the offer, said Abegail Cave, the governor’s spokesperson.

Most tribal nations in Oklahoma have been issuing plates to their citizens since the 1990s. Their tag offices operate independently from the state and from each other, with different residency requirements and fee schedules.

At least 75% of those tribes share their vehicle registration information with a state law enforcement database, The Oklahoman has found. But toll readers can’t access the police database, and turnpike officials did not wait to install the cashless tolls until they had obtained plate information directly from tribes.

The confusion and rhetoric tied to tribal plates escalated in November, after a state trooper ticketed an Otoe-Missouria tribal citizen over her license plate. The trooper said she lived outside of her tribe’s jurisdiction and should have had a state plate. That ticket was later dropped but still sparked a wave of fear among drivers with tribal plates. 

Stitt has denied directing troopers to begin enforcing any residency requirements tied to tribal tags. 

Will the Oklahoma Legislature weigh in during session?

It’s unclear whether state lawmakers will wade into the issue. A proposal that sought to close the data gap and allow state police to share vehicle registration information with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority was voted down Tuesday by the House public safety committee. 

Chuck Hoskin Jr., the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, said last month that he may ask lawmakers for help renewing his nation’s car tag compact with the state if negotiations with Stitt stall out. Chad Harsha, the Cherokee Nation's attorney general, said Tuesday that he and other Cherokee officials are continuing to talk with Stitt's office. Cave also confirmed those talks are ongoing. 

A spokesman for Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat said he hadn’t yet been approached by Cherokee officials to discuss the issue.
