Kumta & nearby: places to visit.
Tourists visiting Honnavara, Kumta, Gokarna belt usually plan their stay in Gokarna. Kumta is often seen as a stopover destination and not a stay option. However, if you have already explored Gokarna and Honnavar and looking for a change or in case you don't get decent accomodation in Gokarna you can explore staying in Kumta and exploring nearby places.
Another advantage of Kumta is Kumta railway station is very close to town, hence access is easier and cheaper. Fair number of KSRTC and private buses are available to Mangaluru, Bengaluru and other big cities.
This post lists various places of interest that you can explore with Kumta as a base. Kumta as such isn't loaded with tourist attractions to keep you busy for whole weekend, but within 50 kms radius you will find dozens of attractions, thus it is very viable to plan a weekend from Kumta. I've drafted plan for 1 night/2 days, you can extend/modify as per your needs.
Few more options:
Vannalli Beach & Harbor
Day 01: Upon arrival at around 6 or 7 AM, decide if you want to try early check-in, fresh up or can hold till afternoon and start exploring right away.
Mirjan Fort, Yana caves and couple of waterfalls in that area (if visiting between August and November/December) would take your morning half.
Back in Kumta, check in into your room, fresh-up, lunch
Evening you may wish to head South towards Honnavara- Mangrove board walk, Apsarakonda, Eco Beach, Pavinakurva hanging bridge would take your second half. Detailed post on Hoonavara is available separately . If time permits and interested proceed further south towards Murudeshwara, else return to Kumta, sunset at Kumta beach.
Vishnutheertha and Mavinakere are 2 more interesting spots inside Kumta town.
Day 02: Head to Kirbele fort for a nice trek in the morning. From here you may want to take a ferry to Gokarna and explore Paradise beach (bike and individuals can take a ferry, by road is longer 42 kms). If Gokarna excites you there are more attractions to spend whole day, or you can return to Kumta and explore scenic spots around Aghanashini river (Separate post coming soon).
If you wish to extend you can proceed towards Sirsi, Dandeli or Karwar, Goa or Udupi, Mangaluru or Jog falls, Sagara/Shivamogga from Kumta.
We stayed at Palm Beach huts in Kumta. You may select any option in your budget, location and interest. Kumta does have couple of large and expensive resorts, several homestays/budget hotels by the beach and few more options by the highway.

Mahabaleshwar Temple
The Atmalinga, a Shiva Linga six feet tall, is worshipped at this temple. It is a famous illustration of the elegance of the Dravidian architecture and was constructed using white granite. The primary deity is a standing Lord Shiva statue made of carved stone.
The temple was named Dakshin (South) Kashi because it was referenced in the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana and is seen to be just as important as Kashi. The temple is 20 km away from Kumta.

Surfing and speedboats are among the many enjoyable water sports activities available on Om Beach. Even boats are available for visitors to use. Numerous tourists come here to see the distinctive black rock formations.
Mirjan Fort
Mirjan Fort serves as a majestic memorial to our illustrious past. It spans 4.1 hectares and is located around 11 kilometres from the town of Kumta. The fort, operational until 1785, is also said to have been the scene of several fights in the 16 th and 17 th centuries.
This fort was later taken by the British, who utilised it as an armoury. Its grounds are fortified with amazing examples of historical architecture, including canals, moats, hidden tunnels, and other features. The magnificent fort genuinely resembles a fantasy castle with its grass and vegetation.
Timings: 9 AM – 5 PM
Entry fees: Free
Yana Caves are well known as a hub of adventure, nature, and religion and serve as the ideal vacation spot. Yana is a hill town well-known for holding two enormous naturally occurring limestone monoliths that draw thousands of pilgrims each year.
The area is blessed with the ever-enchanting greenery and freshness of the Sahyadri Hills of the Western Ghats. The distance between Yana Caves and Kumta is 30 km. You can hire a cab from Kumta to visit the caves.
Mahalasa Temple
The temple was constructed in 1565 AD by Archaks under the alias of Gurav on land that the Pai family of Kumta gave. The temple is decorated with several beautiful wooden sculptures, and tales from the Mahabharata and Ramayana are painted on its walls. Foundation day is one of the celebrations that the temple enthusiastically observes in March and April.
Timings : 6 AM to 5 PM
Alvekodi Beach
A secret beach in the Alvekodi settlement, close to Kumta, is undeveloped and has crystal-clear water. This pristine location with a white sand beach is reached after travelling over a lengthy, twisting path through farms. The location makes for a beautiful picnic spot with a breathtaking sunset view.
Dhareshwar is a spiritual location that is home to an antique temple called Mahadev Temple. The temple, located around eight km southeast of Kumta, houses four written tablets. The temple, said to have been designed by Rudroji Pandit, was finished by Sonappa sometime between 1500 and 1559. Five sacred lakes surround the black stone temple, and its walls are embellished with exquisite sculptures.
Paradise Beach
Full Moon Beach is another name for Paradise Beach. Visiting the beach, especially after sunset, is an exciting and hypnotic experience. It is an ideal location to find peace and relax in the lap of nature because it is removed from the stresses of the city.
Uppin Ganpati Temple
It is a historic temple that dates back thousands of years. Lord Ganesha serves as the temple’s principal deity and is housed within an enormous main hall and an arch. According to legend, Lord Shiva was the focus of the Uppin Ganpati Temple during the Vijayanagar Empire’s rule. Additionally, the Ganesha statue currently in the temple was transported from Kumta, a nearby town.
One of the greatest beaches in the vicinity is this one. It is typically less congested because it is away from the busy town. The beach includes a few spots of rock and excellent smooth white sand. Swimming at the beach is not really advised due to the danger posed by the strong current flow. One may still take in the tranquil and magnificent waves without entering the sea. It is still a less popular tourist destination with lots of adventurous activities.
How do I get about Kumta?
Kumta is a lovely town that may be explored via various transportation options. You may take a bus or an auto-rickshaw for short trips, but a cab is the most practical option for longer ones. Additionally, hiring a car is an alternative for convenience.
What are the best tourist attractions in Kumta?
The biggest tourist destinations in Kumta include Gokarna, the Mahabaleshwar Temple, Om Beach, Mirjan Fort, Yana, and Mahalasa Temple.
