Plan B’s transformation from grime-oriented, underground upstart to arena-touring, genuinely credible soul singer has to represent one of the most stunning trnasformations in recent musical history. Granted, a quick look over the production credits for 'Who Needs Actions When You Got Words' will likely dispel suggestions that it was some kind of bedroom project, but even so, just the fact that he ditched those stylings for something considerably more clean-cut was, in itself, surprising. There is something that connects the Plan B of old with the one who made The Defamation of Strickland Banks, though; his penchant for storytelling. Concept albums don’t normally go four times platinum in the UK, but 'Strickland Banks' is an exception, and the stage show that Ben Drew put together to accompany it - a sharp-suited band, a backdrop designed to look like an old-school movie theatre, a plethora of backing singers and a brass section - all served to complement the story that Drew was trying to tell. More recently, he had the bravery to take on the middle classes - who surely made up the bulk of his fanbase during the 'Strickland Banks' era - with the soundtrack for his directorial debut, 'Ill Manors;' whether it’ll pay dividends is yet to be seen, but there’s no question that he’s pushing the envelope - both onstage and off - in a manner that few other British artists can honestly claim to have done.

Back in 2010 I saw Plan B perform at the Western Park V Festival venue. The London-based rapper and songwriter had recently released his second album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks and She Said was echoing from seemingly every music program and radio station in Britain.

A relatively new name on the mainstream scene, Plan B attracted an unusually large crowd for his early afternoon time slot. The audience wanted to hear more from the apparently multi-talented Harry Brown actor. Plan B delivered an entertainingly eclectic performance. Early in the set he treated the crowd to a live rendition of She Said. Though Plan B didn’t stick to a straight performance of his own work. One of the artist’s greatest strengths is his willingness to experiment onstage. The band soon launched into a reggae take on the hit. The new slant on the by-now familiar tune was a welcome surprise.

Indeed, Plan B and co further demonstrated their versatility. At one point the Plan B instructed the crowd to open mosh pits. A sharp contrast to his laid back cover of Paolo Nutini’s ‘Coming up Easy.’

Plan B played a great festival set. Varied, musically interesting and thoroughly entertaining, the performance satisfied the expectant crowd.

Was a great night!!! His support band The Misfits.. where a good laugh and there songs are good!! I was enjoying dancing away with my fiancé while Ben drew kept looking over at us!! He sang some of his older songs aswell as many from his new album!! I wish I paid for VIP tickets though...

Ate to much & wore the wrong shoes! Plan b and crew appeared on stage no more sore feet danced the night away to an amazing high enrergy set. New tunes and favorites with a new spin brilliant! Don't know wot face paint was about but who cares. Fantastic yet again.

Bloody brilliant!!! Very talented guy, love his music and love the venue. Could have been on longer though, his back catalogue is big enough. Loved the sound and he used all of the stage.

Today, UK musical visionary and three-time Ivor Novello Award winner Ben Drew , aka Plan B , has unveiled his new single 'Guess Again' . The song is taken from the BRIT Award winner's highly-anticipated fourth studio album, 'Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose' ( HBAHBL ), confirmed for release on May 4th.

Premiered by Annie-Mac as her 'Hottest Record' on Radio 1 last night, 'Guess Again' is yet another showcase of Plan B 's endless musical versatility. The politically charged anthem pairs Drew 's signature vocals with a pounding dance-hall beat. Drew lends his own writing and production talent to the track along with the help of FRED ( Charli xcx / Stefflon Don ) and Show N Prove .

Ever since he burst onto the scene in 2006, Ben Drew has been a truly irrepressible figure in the UK's musical landscape. His debut album 'Who Needs Actions When You Got Words' , an incendiary scream of anger and pride from the streets of East London, broke new ground for UK hip hop. With his sophomore album, 2010's 'The Defamation Of Strickland Banks' , Drew explored his lifelong passion for soul marrying the genre with hip hop in perfect harmony, the album went on to achieve quadruple-platinum status, hitting the #1 album spot and selling over 1.4 million copies in the UK alone, plus seeing him win both a BRIT and three Ivor Novello Awards . Always pushing his creative boundaries, Drew then turned his hand to directing and made his directorial debut with 2012's 'iLL Manors' . The film, along with its accompanying album, saw him boldly addressing socio-political issues with his often brutal cultural commentary, seeing Ben nominated for his fifth BRIT Award , being nominated for his first Mercury Music prize, and once again hitting #1 in the UK album chart.

Plan B will be embarking on his first tour in almost 6 years this April. Kicking off in Manchester on 26th April, the tour will then visit Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, Southend and Bristol, before finishing up at London's O2 Brixton Academy on May 3rd.

The German metal legend Udo Dirkschneider is back with a brand new album entitled TOUCHDOWN. He releases albums at a steady pace with his previous being from 2021. Last year, his old band-mate from Accept, Peter Baltes, joined forces with him and is now a solid member in the band.

At the end of October last year the band announced they were heading through Europe once again and this time the tour kicked off in Scandinavia with Norway as the first country out. The band had a string of support acts during the tour and in Sweden it was Frozen Crown that was chosen to open. Other support acts on the tour were Primal Fear, Unity and Tailgunner. Many of the dates on the tour was sold out which was nice to hear.

Since the club Kulturbolaget closed its doors last year many of the shows are now held at a club called Plan B and so was the case with the U.D.O. show. The place hosts three stages that can inhabit 120, 360 and 900 people at the most. Unfortunately, the place is located a bit outside the city center amongst various industrial facilities. U.D.O. stopped by Malmo on a Tuesday which meant the doors opened early at 6 o’clock, and the support act was scheduled to kick off the night at 7.15pm.

As always, I was at the club well ahead of time, this time I was there about 20 minutes before the doors opened and not many people were standing in line waiting to come in. After minor problems with getting my press/photo pass I could walk into the club which was divided in two with the stage on one side and the bar and the merch-stand on the other. The area was divided with a black sheet which made me wonder if the ticket sale hadn’t gone too well.

Frozen Crown is an Italian act that have released four albums so far with their latest CALL OF THE NORTH in 2023. I hadn’t heard the band before so I was eager to hear them and as scheduled, at 7:15 the band came on stage.

• Frozen Crown

“Neverending” kicked off the show and was followed straight by “The Water Dancer”. The Italian band included six people and three of them played guitar. Giada thanked the people for being there saying it was the first time the band performed in Malmö, Sweden. “We are from Italy and have been given the honor to warm you up for U.D.O.”  “Call Of The North” followed and since it was pretty dark on stage, with no lights to talk about, it was difficult to see and to take pictures of the band. The band members are:

Giada “Jade” Efro – lead vocals Federico Mondelli – guitar, vocals Fabiola “Sheena” Beliomo – guitar Francesco Zof – bass Niso Tomasini – drums Alessia Lanzone – guitar

In my opinion, the band plays melodic power metal with both clean vocals as well as some growling by guitarist Mondelli. The small stage got so crowded with all the members on it that when lead guitarist Beliomo did her thing Giada had to take a step back.

“Kings” followed in which Giada tried to get the people to shout hey hey with her but it didn’t work out too well. To be honest Frozen Crown didn’t do much music wise for me. I thought their music was a bit boring and I can’t understand why they put in growling in some of the songs, that didn’t add much to the songs. There are numerous of other bands that play better melodic power metal than Frozen Crown. However, the members were skilled musicians and it was nice to see a band with three female members, the metal community needs more female musicians for sure!

Federico Mondelli, is married to Giada, and to be honest he took over the mic a bit too much for the second half of the show, announcing “The Lone Stranger”. However, by now it felt like the crowd had gotten a bit tired of listening and watching the band. Many had walked over to the bar in wait of U.D.O.

“Far Beyond” and “I Am The Tyrant” continued on the show after which he thanked the people for being there and that the band had one more song left to play. “We will see you in the merch stand after the show and we’re going to sign autographs and take pictures with you”.  The show ended with “The Shieldmaiden” and after 45 minutes the band walked off the stage.

The show included melodic power metal with a lead singer that has a little more to work on until she knows how to take on a crowd. I didn’t like that Federico took over the center stage from her during the latter part of the show, it felt like he interfered with her doing her thing. Besides that, the band included skilled musicians but that doesn’t make an entire show last. Frozen Crown didn’t win a new fan in me this night.

Neverending The Water Dancer Call Of The North Kings The Lone Stranger Far Beyond I Am The Tyrant The Shieldmaiden

Time for change of gear, and the crew brought along a huge drum-set placed it on a podium at the back of the stage. A backdrop portraying the band logo was hung up and on each side of the drums frames with lights in them was placed. Since the stage was pretty small that was about it that could fit there.

There’s no stopping when it comes to the legendary German panzer tank that is Udo Dirkschneider. Last year he released his latest studio album titled TOUCHDOWN which follows up the 2021 release GAME OVER. Last year the old Accept bass player Peter Baltes joined forces with his old bandmate, and to be honest, the U.D.O. of today sounds more like Accept than the Accept version with Wolf Hoffman does. Dirkschneider is an old hero for me and I have followed him since the release of the album RESTLESS AND WILD with Accept from 1982, so yes I’m very old. I don’t think that TOUCHDOWN is one of his strongest releases. It lacks a true hit and the album feels like one in a dozen. If you buy an album with U.D.O. you pretty much know what you’ve got and I think that TOUCHDOWN feels a bit forced and released in a hurry. I had wished more from the new album, it’s not bad at all, but it feels like it went a little fast to release it. Maybe the metal legend should wait a bit with releasing albums, he doesn’t have to unleash albums every year.

It took the crew about 30 minutes to prepare the stage and a few minutes past 8:30 smoke filled the stage and the intro song number 2 was heard through the speakers. This meant that it was time to once again welcome U.D.O. to Malmo.

The band entered the stage during the second intro and was warmly greeted by the small crowd that screamed and clapped their hands when the first song “Isolation Man” was played. Dirkschneider entered the stage after the intro of the song and smiled when he heard the fans screaming for him. The song “Break The Rules” taken from the classical album MEAN MACHINE followed and the line up in the band is:

All the members smiled looking happy to be on stage in Malmo and everyone, but Dirkschneider himself, moved around on stage connecting with the fans. If you have seen Dirkschneider live in action before, you know he sings his parts, taking a step back letting the musicians have their moments in the spotlights. Dirkschneider asked if the fans wanted to sing with him, which of course everyone wanted, and fired off “Forever Free”.

The constant smoke that was covering the stage teamed up with the very bad lighting made it hard to see the band and if I would give the head of the club a suggestion, it would be to invest in some proper lights.

“Metal Machine”, taken from the 2013 year album STEELHAMMER, continued and it felt like the fans hadn’t paid the new albums much attention and rather focused to sing a long in the old classical songs. “Never Cross My Way” and “Independence Day” then followed. Dirkschneider tried to get the people to sing the intro but that didn’t go too well. Thus far the band hadn’t played many of their classic tunes but had focused on playing rather not so known songs with mainly songs taken from TOUCHDOWN.

When “The Wrong Side of Midnight” came the fans woke up clapping along in the song and since the song is a personal favorite of mine I was glad they had brought it back in the set list. After the song the band walked off the stage and through the speakers an intro was heard. As the band returned it was time to fire off “Fight For The Right” which also is taken from the new album. Since TOUCHDOWN was released last year I understand the band wants to try on the new songs live but I guess that some of the fans wasn’t happy with the set list so far, I heard many saying that they wanted to hear the old classic tunes. Dirkschenider asked if the fans were having a good time and he asked that three times until he was satisfied with the fans answer. “Here comes a song from way back when I was young, which I’m not anymore”. “Heart Of Gold” followed and the song really fired up the crowd. After the song everyone but Dammers walked off the stage and it was time for him to throw a solo. He did a shorter solo that led into “In The Darkness”. Smirnov and Dammers had a great co-operation on stage and the same went of Sven behind the drums together with Baltes. I really hope that Baltes stays in the band because it was great fun to see the two old Accept members back on stage together again.

The epic “Man And Machine” then followed and needless to say the sing a long was a fact. It felt like many of the fans at the club had been waiting to hear this old classical piece. Straight away followed “Pain” after which Dirkschneider thanked the fans saying the next song was taken from the GAME OVER album and it was “Metal Never Dies”. “Do you want to sing with me?” he asked, and when the crowd chanted yes, he asked, “are you sure?” The fans did the best they could supporting Dirkschneider in the song and “One Heart One Soul” was the next song in line. Even though the crowd was pretty calm and collected it felt like Dirkschneider appreciated them and he smiled a lot during the show. Maybe he prefers a smaller calmer crowd these days rather than a wild bunch. After all, the man is 72 years old and for him to be standing on a stage continuing releasing albums year after year is admirable. No one feels as solid as him when it comes to releasing good old heavy metal music. He doesn’t invent anything new with his music, and if you buy an album from Udo you know what you’re going to get, but that also has its charm. His vocals sounded as hoarse as it always has, the only thing that has changed is that he isn’t moving around a lot on stage these days.

“Thank for your support” he said, “we have got a new album out called TOUCHDOWN and here comes the title track”. That song ended the original part of the show and by now the band had been playing for about 90 minutes. The crowd started to shout for encores straight away and I guess many of the people in the club wanted to hear more of the old classic U.D.O. songs because as for now the majority of the set list had been dedicated to the new songs and the not so known tunes. After a short while smoke filled the stage and red lights was turned on, the band returned and the first encore out was “I Give As Good As I Get”. “Holy” then followed and the song was a crowd pleaser and the fans all sang a long in the song with Dirkschneider. Finally a classic tune this night, “They Want War” continued the encores and again the song woke up the fans that once again aired their lungs. It felt like the band had saved the best pieces for last. When “Animal House” came, it felt like the band fired off all the best songs in a row and it was nice to hear just another hit song taken from the bands debut album. Dirkschneider asked if the fans wanted to hear more music, we have one song left and do we have any Queen fans here tonight, here comes “We Will Rock You”. It was a bit bold to end the show with a cover song that was featured on Dirkschneider’s solo album MY WAY from 2022. But the fans seemed to love the song and in the middle everyone sang a long to the beat played by Sven behind the drums. After a long outro Dirkschneider thanked the fans saying- “until next time we see you, thanks for tonight”.

What can be said about the show then? Well, it was so nice to see Udo Dirkschneider live in action again. He and the band treated the fans with a rock solid show paired with his patented heavy metal music. It was fun to see him and Baltes together on stage, and as I wrote earlier, I really hope this line up is solid now and lasts a long time. The rest of the band was as great as ever and it felt like the guys had a good time together on stage. Even though I missed some of my personal favorite songs I thought it was bold and unexpected of the band to fill the set list with mostly new songs as well as some not so known songs. It wasn’t the typical Dirkschneider set list if I put it that way. So no shade on the band, they delivered as always and it was a fun night.

However, the club left more to wish for. The lights were not great at all, the smoke partially covered the band, and it was hard to see the members. Since the club is located in an old industrial complex, the floor is really hard to stand on for too long, it’s a pure concrete floor. I spoke to people that said they really missed Kulturbolaget, but since that place is closed now, it’s only to adjust to new venues. But it’s sad that there aren’t many places left for live music in Malmö at the moment which is really too bad. I personally miss Kulturbolaget so much to say the least.

Eight BIPOC actors speak the truths of their eight BIPOC playwright counterparts, in a bold declaration that their experiences are not monolithic, dispelling stereotypes, and presenting the depth and breadth of BIPOC experiences here and now in Utah.

FULL COLOR is the third installment in our Color Series. …OF COLOR (2019) and LOCAL COLOR (2021) featured fictional characters in fictional worlds, influenced by the playwrights’ personal experience. In FULL COLOR, each playwright writes in first person, combining writing acumen with personal experience.

A WORLD PREMIERE BY AARON ASANO SWENSON

A co-production with utahpresents as part of the stage door series at kingsbury hall.

KILO-WAT explores the life and legacy of point guard Wat “Kilo-Wat” Misaka, who led the University of Utah men’s basketball team to the 1944 NCAA Championship at the height of World War II, when persons of Japanese descent from California, Washington, and Oregon were incarcerated in camps such as Topaz.

As residents of Utah, the Misaka family was spared incarceration.

Immediately following the Championship, Wat was drafted into the U.S. Army and, after the war ended, was assigned to interview survivors of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima.

When he returned home, he led the team to the 1947 NIT Championship, completed his degree in mechanical engineering, and was drafted by the New York Knicks, breaking the color barrier in professional basketball.

KILO-WAT explores what it means to make history within history.

The University of Utah retired Wat Misaka’s number 20 in 2022.

A WORLD PREMIERE BY JANINE SOBECK KNIGHTON

THE BEATRIX POTTER DEFENSE SOCIETY explores the early life of Beatrix Potter. And now you’re thinking of Peter Rabbit. As anyone would.

But Beatrix Potter was much more than Peter Rabbit. She was a literary subversive, employing the interplay between the wild and domestic worlds to help her worldwide readership view and interact with the natural world differently.

Much of her story lies in the journal where she sketched the artwork that would become synonymous with her name. But her real story lives in the coded text accompanying those sketches, coded text that chronicles both her discovery and harnessing of her personal power, anathema to Victorian gender norms.

Although much is made historically of how Beatrix’s connection to the vicar Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley enhanced her writing career, there are also hints that his wife Edith was Beatrix’s true guide. Yet it’s virtually impossible to find information about her. It’s as if she’s been erased.

THE BEATRIX POTTER DEFENSE SOCIETY explores that erasure in an attempt to crack the code of how Edith and Beatrix may have set each other on anarchic-for-the-times journeys of artistic independence.

FULL COLOR  and  THE BEATRIX POTTER DEFENSE SOCIETY  will serve high school students in grades 11-12—and KILO ⚡️ WAT  will serve also serve middle and high school students in grades 7-12—with free student matinees via our A Week With A Play program, wherein students read a play, see that play, and then discuss it with the playwright(s). Created specifically for grades 4-6, EllaMental centers on Ella, a Black, twelve-year-old sixth-grader struggling to make sense of her Big Feelings from the pandemic—grief, loss, fear, and anger—in a post-COVID world.

EllaMental engages students in an accessible, real-time, comforting conversation, one as barrier-free as possible, one that instantly invites students to live inside the play rather than searching for a way in. Instructive without feeling preachy, EllaMental provides a much more chill experience than students in grades 4-6 might expect: one that is natural, aspirational, and even inspirational.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families   Together

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. As Congressional Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of national security – twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades – the President and his Administration have taken actions to secure the border, including:

• Implementing executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum when encounters are high;
• Deploying record numbers of law enforcement personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the Southern border;
• Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
• Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
• Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

• Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
• This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
• These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
• In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
• Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.  
• This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

• President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
• Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
• Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.
