The Best Road Trip Apps That Help You Find Cheap Gas, Avoid Traffic, and More

Technology has revolutionized the way we travel in countless ways. Paper maps and GPS navigation systems have been replaced by Google and Apple Maps, old-school CDs by music streaming services, and guidebooks by apps that can notify road-trippers of roadside attractions in real time. One thing is certain: the smartphone has made road trips infinitely easier and, arguably, cheaper.

Whether you need a digital road trip planner to map out your next journey or something to help you avoid traffic jams, here are 11 of the best road trip apps to download ahead of your next adventure.

Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers is one of the most practical and popular road trip planning apps out there. Maybe you want to see national parks or the quirkiest roadside attractions. Perhaps you want to stop for the night at an iconic or underrated hotel. You can plan your stops right in the app, adding up to three waypoints for free or 150 with a Roadtrippers Premium account. There are also Basic and Pro memberships that allot you 20 and 50 waypoints per trip, respectively. The higher-tier memberships allow you to collaborate with friends and family and use navigation. The app features lodging, sights, outdoorsy destinations, restaurants, activities, shopping, fuel, and more all around the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The app is free, but you have to upgrade to a membership plan to enjoy all the bells and whistles. The Basic plan costs $40 a year, the Pro plan $50 a year, and the Premium $60 a year. It's available on iOS and Android .

Google Maps

Every road-tripper needs a trusty navigation app in their arsenal, and Google Maps is consistently one of the most — if not the most — downloaded in the U.S. every year. Its dominance can be attributed to how comprehensive its data is, which allows it to generate the very best directions based on distance, road conditions, and traffic patterns.

Google Maps gives you route options and provides accurate estimates of how long it takes to get from A to B. Plus, you can plot several waypoints along your route — be it a mid-morning coffee stop or a hotel for overnighting (you can see reviews right in the app).

Google Maps is free and available on iOS and Android .

Waze is another one of the top navigation apps. With real-time updates that help you avoid traffic jams, construction, and more, it will have you navigating new cities and unfamiliar streets like a seasoned local. It's perhaps a little more proactive than Google Maps in changing up a route when problems arise, and that means Waze users should prepare for their drive to be a little unpredictable.

No one wants to spend hours sitting in traffic instead of exploring, so the fact that Waze collects data from other drivers to streamline the driving experience is a huge help. The app is free and available on iOS and Android .

Paying for fuel can eat up a good chunk of your road trip budget, but GasBuddy can save you a few bucks. The app crowdsources up-to-date fuel prices for more than 150,000 gas stations around the U.S. and Canada. The app also tells you how recent the submission is so you know whether it's outdated.

GasBuddy is not just helpful for finding cheap gas but also for finding gas stations in general (and parking), which can be difficult in foreign territory. The app is free and can be downloaded on iOS and Android . While using it, be a good road-tripper and submit gas prices you see as you travel.

Roadside America

The offbeat and kitschy roadside attractions you can find throughout the U.S. are often some of the most delightful parts of a road trip. The Roadside America app helps you find the most unique attractions worth stopping for, like the large sculpture of a cartoon mouse holding a cheese platter in Plain, Wisconsin — where else? — or the decidedly odd larger-than-life-sized three-way electrical plug that rests on a lawn in Philadelphia. The app features museums, murals, tours, quirky restaurants, and photo ops.

Roadside America costs $3 to download, which gets you access to one region in the app. You can purchase more regions for $2 or get access to all of the U.S. and Canada for an extra $7. The app is available only on iOS .

iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Knowing where to stop for road trip snacks, a drive-through latte, or a public restroom can be challenging with all the exit signs whizzing by at 70 mph, but iExit Interstate Exit Guide takes the guesswork out of it. The app will list which exits are coming up on your route, what's there, and what they offer — including food, lodging, fuel, and even hospitals. It pulls fuel prices from OPIS (the Oil Price Information Service) and displays Yelp reviews for businesses.

The app is free to download. Find it on both iOS and Android .

HotelTonight

Even if you've planned out all your stops ahead of time, you might find that you need to pull over for a night unexpectedly. Driving is tiring, and unplanned naps can be life-saving. HotelTonight can help you find accommodations in a pinch. The app offers day-of deals on unsold rooms, and the user-friendly interface means you can book a discounted room in minutes. There are well over 1,000 properties to choose from in cities all over the world, from Mexico City to Jakarta (in case you happen to take your road-tripping global).

It's free to download and available on iOS and Android .

If staying in a tucked-away A-frame cabin, a yurt, or a private guest house in someone's garden is more your travel style than bouncing between hotels, then Airbnb is the ticket. On the Airbnb app, you can search properties (millions in the U.S. alone) on a map and read reviews before you book, which you can do in advance or at the last minute.

The app features not just vacation homes but also activities, so if you're keen to experience a city like a local you can do so via a pottery class or a guided walking tour, for example.

The Airbnb app is free. You can download it on iOS or Android .

Travelers who dream of camping out under the stars should download The Dyrt , a free app that helps you find tent, RV, and cabin sites across the U.S. One of the top camping apps on iOS and Android , it has more than a million registered users who submit reviews, pictures, and tips. On The Dyrt, you get real intel on campsites and a built-in community that makes camping on a road trip especially fun and safe. You can even book some of the campsites right on app.

The app is free, but there's a premium version for $36 a year that allows you to plan trips and search campsites while offline — convenient for remote regions.

What is a road trip without a perfect playlist? Whether you're keen to create a soundtrack of nostalgic singalongs, modern pop songs, or music inspired by your destination, you'll find even the most obscure tunes on Spotify , a catalog of more than 100 million tracks. When you tire of Taylor Swift, you can turn to podcasts or an audiobook to keep you company. Road trips are a great opportunity to delve into a docuseries like "Serial," an all-time favorite.

Spotify is free to download and listen to, but the ad breaks are annoying and streaming can chew through your phone data. A better option is to purchase a premium membership for $11 a month. It's ad-free and you can download music to listen to offline. The Spotify app is available on iOS and Android .

Electric vehicles are increasingly commonplace and great for more environmentally friendly road-tripping. The problem is often finding charging stations, as most EVs can go 100 to 300 miles before they need to be plugged in. PlugShare lists 700,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, and beyond. Users share their reviews of the stations, helping to guide EV drivers to the best, fastest, and most reliable charging spots.

PlugShare is free and available to download on iOS and Android .

Road Trip Planner with Stops: Tools & Tips for a Perfect Road Trip

Travel Tips

road trip planner with stops

Looking for a  road trip planner with stops and the best tips to plan the perfect road trip? We’ve put together this step-by-step guide, loaded with tools, that'll tell you everything you need to know when planning a road trip.

The open road is calling your name! But before you jump in the car and hit the road, you’ll need to do a little planning and preparation first.

The first step is the fun one: selecting the route . To do so, decide what's most important to you: distance, destination, or budget. Once you know this, you can begin researching and building out the rest of your plans.

Make sure your route is broken down into doable driving segments both to and from your final destination. Your plan should also include a list of attractions you want to see along the way.

Tip: Ahead of your road trip , research attractions' hours and visitor guidelines. Reservations may be required.

Once you know where you’re going, you’ll need to decide where to stay.

If your road trip is all about the great outdoors and you plan on camping, visit recreation.gov to find and book campsites on your route.

Prefer more modern accommodations? Priceline , Hotels.com , Hotwire , Expedia , or any one of your preferred hotel booking sites can help you book a hotel at each check point along your route.

Or, check out Airbnb for a more unique lodging selection.

You’ve heard it, you’ve probably said it, and we all know it’s true: “there’s an app for everything.” And as a matter of fact, there’s quite a few to aid in your road trip success. Here are the ones we suggest downloading before you go:

TripIt : Yeah, so this might be a shameless plug, but we can really help! You’ve already selected and booked your lodging and attractions, so let us automagically create an itinerary for you. That way you can find all your plans in one place and you won’t have to dig through all your email to find times, locations, and confirmation numbers. TripIt will also help you find restaurants (for takeaway meals), cafés, and stores near your pit stops with our Nearby Places feature. Our Navigator feature can act as GPS to help you navigate between stops. We also recommend leveraging Neighborhood Safety Scores (which include COVID-19 data) to assess the risk of a place you're thinking of visiting along your route.

GasBuddy : You’ll have to frequent the gas stations on your road trip , which makes this app essential. Gasbuddy provides a crowd-sourced list of gas prices to help you find the best deal near you.

OpenTable : With OpenTable, you can decide on a restaurant around you based off of reviews and photos. Dining al fresco? You can book a table right in the app. From there, you can forward your reservations to plans@.

Spotify : Every road trip needs good jams and lots of them! Although the free version of this service is awesome, it’ll definitely be worth your money to upgrade to premium for your road trip. For just $9.99 a month you have access to any song at anytime… even when you're offline.

AAA : Although we suggest you check out your car before leaving, you never know what can happen out there on the road. With this app, you can contact roadside assistance and help them locate you. You can also discover AAA discount locations, Diamond-rated hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Wi-Fi Finder : Whether you need to post to Facebook, FaceTime mom, or email your team, Wi-Fi Finder will help you stay connected by locating both free and paid Wi-Fi spots.

Documentation

On your road trip you’re going to see some breathtaking sights and make some incredible memories, so documentation will be key.

If you’re into the visuals, snapping pics on your phone is a must. Step up your editing game with VSCO Cam ; this will help your pictures come to life and look at least half as beautiful as in real life. Then your photo will be ready to share on Instagram . Also, don’t forget to tag your pictures with #TripItPic to share your travels and have a chance to be featured on our page .

For your videos, you can use Magisto to automatically create and edit amazing videos, complete with music and effects.

Evernote is yet another great documentation tool. Write down everything you love and learn along the way, and add photos to create the ultimate travel journal.

The Importance of Planning Your Car Trip

As a seasoned traveler, I have learned the importance of planning ahead when embarking on a car trip. The benefits of taking the time to plan your journey are numerous and can make all the difference in ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

By mapping out your route, preparing your vehicle, packing smart, budgeting wisely, booking accommodations and activities in advance, mapping out rest stops and gas stations, planning for emergencies and unexpected situations, staying safe on the road, and making the most of your car trip with entertainment options and activities along the way – you can truly make this journey one to remember.

With PlanTrips, planning your car trip is such a breeze. In today’s post, I will show you how to plan up your road trip effortlessly!

Choosing Your Destination and Route

The first step in planning any car trip is choosing your destination. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, researching potential destinations is key. Consider factors such as distance from home, attractions or landmarks you wish to visit, weather conditions during your travel dates – all these elements will help you narrow down your options.

Once you have chosen your destination(s), it’s time to map out the best route. Thanks to modern technology like GPS systems or online maps services like Google Maps or MapQuest – finding directions has never been easier. Take into account any toll roads or highways that may be more convenient but also consider scenic routes that offer breathtaking views along the way.

Preparing Your Vehicle for the Journey

plan your car trip

Before hitting the road on any car trip adventure it is crucial to ensure that your vehicle is in top shape. Start by checking essential components such as oil levels, tire pressure (including spare tire), brakes functionality – these simple checks can prevent potential breakdowns during long drives.

Additionally, packing emergency supplies such as jumper cables, flashlight with extra batteries , first aid kit , blankets , water bottles , non-perishable snacks etc., are essential items that should always be kept in every vehicle regardless of whether you’re going on a short drive or an extended road trip.

Lastly, if your vehicle is due for a tune-up or maintenance service, it’s best to get it done before embarking on your journey. This will give you peace of mind knowing that your car is in optimal condition and ready to take on the miles ahead.

Packing Smart: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

When it comes to packing for a car trip, less is often more. Making a packing list can help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget any essential items. Start by laying out all the items you think you’ll need and then go through them one by one, asking yourself if each item is truly necessary.

Remember that space in your vehicle may be limited, especially if traveling with multiple passengers or pets. Pack light and only bring what is absolutely essential. Leave unnecessary items at home – this will not only save space but also make it easier to find what you need when on the road.

Budgeting for Your Car Trip

Setting a budget for your car trip is an important step in ensuring financial stability throughout your journey. Consider expenses such as gas, food, lodging accommodations , activities or attractions fees , souvenirs etc., when creating your budget plan.

To save money during your car trip consider finding ways to cut costs such as opting for cheaper accommodations like camping grounds instead of hotels or cooking meals instead of eating out every day . Additionally , planning ahead can help secure better deals on accommodations or attractions tickets .

Booking Accommodations and Activities

Once you have chosen your destination(s) it’s time to start booking accommodations and activities in advance . Research lodging options such as hotels , motels , bed & breakfasts etc., read reviews from previous guests , compare prices – this will help ensure that you find the best option within your budget .

Similarly , research activities or attractions available at each destination . Look into guided tours , museums admission fees etc., book tickets online whenever possible to secure your spot and avoid long lines or sold-out situations .

Mapping Out Rest Stops and Gas Stations

Long drives can be tiring, so it’s important to plan for breaks and rest stops along the way. Mapping out rest areas or scenic spots where you can stretch your legs, use the restroom, or have a picnic is essential for a comfortable journey.

Additionally, knowing where gas stations are located along your route is crucial. Running out of gas in the middle of nowhere can quickly turn an enjoyable trip into a nightmare. Plan ahead by identifying gas stations at regular intervals along your route – this will ensure that you never find yourself stranded without fuel.

Planning for Emergencies and Unexpected Situations

car trips

No matter how well you plan, emergencies and unexpected situations can still occur during a car trip. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for any eventuality.

Packing emergency supplies such as jumper cables , flashlight with extra batteries , first aid kit , blankets , water bottles , non-perishable snacks etc., is crucial in case of unforeseen circumstances like car trouble or accidents . Knowing what to do in case of car trouble such as having contact information for roadside assistance services or local mechanics is also important .

Having a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected is another key aspect of planning for emergencies . This could include having alternative routes mapped out in case of road closures or detours due to construction work or severe weather conditions .

Staying Safe on the Road: Tips for Safe Driving

Safety should always be a top priority when embarking on any car trip adventure. Following traffic laws such as speed limits, wearing seatbelts at all times, using turn signals when changing lanes – these simple actions can greatly reduce the risk of accidents.

Avoiding distractions while driving is another crucial aspect of staying safe on the road. Put away your phone, avoid eating while driving, keep conversations with passengers to a minimum – these distractions can take your attention away from the road and increase the chances of an accident.

Lastly, staying alert and well-rested is essential for safe driving. Take breaks when needed, switch drivers if possible to avoid fatigue, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Making the Most of Your Car Trip: Entertainment and Activities

While reaching your destination is often the main goal of a car trip, it’s important to remember that the journey itself can be just as enjoyable. To make the most of your car trip, bring along entertainment options such as books, music playlists , or podcasts – these will help pass the time during long drives.

Additionally , plan fun activities along the way . Research interesting landmarks or attractions that you can visit during rest stops or overnight stays . This will not only break up long drives but also allow you to explore new places and create lasting memories .

Conclusion: Enjoying Your Car Trip and Making Lasting Memories

In conclusion , planning ahead is crucial when embarking on a car trip adventure. By taking steps such as choosing your destination and route wisely , preparing your vehicle for the journey , packing smartly , budgeting wisely , booking accommodations and activities in advance , mapping out rest stops and gas stations along with planning for emergencies – you can ensure a stress-free experience filled with enjoyment .

Remember to stay safe on the road by following traffic laws, avoiding distractions while driving, staying alert and well-rested . Lastly , make sure to make every moment count by bringing entertainment options along with planning fun activities during rest stops or overnight stays .

By embracing this mindset of enjoying both journey & destination – you’ll be able to create lasting memories with loved ones that will be cherished for years to come.

So go ahead – start planning your next car trip adventure today!

Imagine having your favorite RV navigation apps that offer suggested routes and help you find state and national parks and public campgrounds along the way. That’s precisely what RV trip-planning apps do. With campground reviews from fellow travelers at hand, every decision becomes more manageable as it is based on real experiences.

A road trip doesn’t need to burn a hole in your pocket. The beauty of these awesome apps lies in their ability to guide users towards free camping sites or cheaper alternatives like public campgrounds compared to private RV parks for RV Camping only. Plus, they keep tabs on gas stations en route, ensuring fuel stops don’t become financial nightmares.

No more worrying about unexpected detours or sudden weather changes affecting your journey. With live updates via GPS-based directions right within these simple yet practical applications, a smooth ride throughout is almost guaranteed, irrespective of where you’re headed next – an overnight parking spot or a new city exploration.  RV-specific GPS is a plus for travelers who must avoid low clearances on overpasses or tight turns.

Last but certainly not least are those mundane maintenance tasks that come part and parcel with the fun-filled RV life pro experience. RV Trip Wizard , among other great apps, provides checklists for routine RV maintenance checks so nothing gets missed while living this exciting lifestyle on wheels.

The best RV travel app for your needs can differ based on what you’re looking for in an application. However, a few applications have become popular for their broad selection of features and user-friendly interfaces.  I’ve checked out three of them and studied reviews for you, so you don’t have to!

We’ll compare three widely-used options that make traveling by RV or car a breeze: RV Life Pro , Togo RV , and RV Trip Wizard .

RV Life Trip Wizard – RV GPS and Campgrounds

A favorite among full-time RVers, RV Life , provides an all-in-one solution for planning your RV trip. It offers RV Safe GPS, which means the best route suggestions tailored to the size and weight of your vehicle, ensuring safe travels no matter where you go.  With this app, you won’t have to worry about your route or the time to arrive at your destination.

This handy app covers everything from finding RV parks and gas stations to locating nearby RV dump sites.  No more worrying about whether you fit under that highway overpass!  RV Life handles that!

RV Trip Wizard isn’t just an RV navigation map, either.  One of the reasons it is much loved among full-time RVers is that it has so many features beyond just the map.  One of the most popular features is the Points of Interest Map which includes over 57,000 points of interest for you to scope out before adding them to your route.

One of my favorite features of this app is that it even helps you keep track of maintenance schedules for your vehicle.  We can all use a little help with that fun chore!

And finally, you can find ideal RV parks and campgrounds as you travel.  With over 20,000 campgrounds in the app and the ability to rank your memberships in travel clubs, you’ll know which park will give you the best value after a quick look into the app.  In addition, it conveniently locates dump sites, gas stations, and prices en route.

RVLife comes with a 7-day trial to give you ample opportunity to decide if it’s the right fit for you.  After seven days, the cost is approximately $60 per year.  A few nights at a lower-cost camping sight will quickly take care of that $60, making this a great value if you travel often enough.

A demo version comes with more limited capabilities for those who need more than seven days to decide if this is the right app.

Next up?   Togo RV !  This handy app receives high praise from fellow RVers.  It not only aids with trip planning but also includes maintenance reminders and checklists, ensuring that you are road ready at all times!

Togo also has an Overnight RV Parking app, so if you love the RV app, you may just love the Overnight Parking app as well.  Take note that Togo RV is not a free app, but it does offer a free 7-day trial, so if you don’t love it, it won’t cost you a penny!

I love that this app provides access to reviews from fellow travelers on various campgrounds, making it easier to choose the right campground for you when you’re busy living out the dream of being a full-time traveler or an “RV life pro.”

Some of the free features included with Togo are  Movile RV Repair Directory, which will help you find someone to repair your RV or car while you travel.  The Tire Finder lets you enter your tire specs and find the best replacements for your budget.  Pre-made RV checklists are available to get you safely on the road without forgetting any vital details!

You can also enter your vehicle specs and receive recall alerts, and maybe my favorite feature and the best part of this app is the Roadpass University, which is excellent for a new RV owner!

Togo RV is an excellent tool with high ratings among travelers.  Of course, besides the above options, it offers a campground search feature, which includes information about state parks and free camping sites throughout North America.

AllStays Camp & RV App

Last but certainly not least is AllStays Camp & RV , known for its comprehensive database covering everything from public campgrounds with RV sites to overnight parking lots for smaller vehicles.  This robust tool becomes indispensable whether one plans to stay at a state park or search out free camping sites and parking lots (Hello Cracker Barrel!) during road trips across the Midwest.

I feel safe in saying that AllStays is worth your time.  This app has been the #1 Selling, #1 Ranked, and #1 Reviewed Camping App for over 144 Months, with 4.5k reviews in the iOS app store and an overall ranking of 4.6 out of 5.

AllStays Camp & RV App is one of my favorite apps because, although it is simple, it is effective.  I love that it allows searches based on specific requirements like pet-friendly sites or overnight parking facilities.

Midwest State Park Adventures makes a great travel companion or gift. Some of the best travel writers in the Midwest collaborated to put this book together, which covers 12 Midwest States and hundreds of state parks.

And I, the Hip Grandma, wrote contributed by writing the Michigan chapter!

You can click on the photo to order on Amazon or click HERE to learn more and order a signed copy directly from me.

After 13 years of use and development, AllStays has the most campgrounds listed (37,000 in the United States and Canada) and includes FREE overnight parking options.  The filters on this app are excellent.  You can filter sites fairly easily by features such as pet-friendly sites, laundry availability, boat launch, toilet styles, swimming pool, and so on!

But my favorite feature of this app is that some of the data is stored on your phone, making it useable even when driving in and out of wifi or service areas.  Nothing is more frustrating than driving out of signal, losing your internet connection, and the ability to search as you travel.

Notice to Android users:  Allstays Camp and RV does not have an app for you.  However, you can open your browser and log in to use the same features, which is a bit of a drawback if you have your heart set on an app. However, it makes this app useable on any device, including your tablet, computer, or laptop!

Consider Your Cost

When considering cost, RV Life Trip Wizard offers a limited-feature free version and a premium subscription. Togo RV comes with an annual fee. Allstays Pro is the least expensive of the three we’ve discussed here at 34.99 per year or 4.99 per month.

Any way you look at it, the ease these apps bring into your car or RV traveling experience often justifies their price tag.

Remember, no single application will meet every need perfectly. So, please look at each app’s features and consider the most important features before purchasing your perfect companion app.

  The Gist:

Awesome RV travel apps like RV Life Trip Wizard, Togo RV, and Allstays Camp & RV Road Maps offer unique features tailored to your road trip needs. From campground searches to maintenance reminders and route planning, these tools simplify the journey. Consider cost and personal preferences when choosing your perfect digital companion.

Add-on Popular RV Travel Apps

Now that we’ve talked about adding a GPS and Trip planning app, let’s talk about a few apps that don’t do it “all” but do their own thing really well! Here are my favorite stand-alone apps that I wouldn’t travel without!

The user-friendly RV Parky app assists in locating RV dump stations and potential roadside attractions.  It’s FREE, making it a great starter app!

Before I travel, and sometimes even after, you’ll find me cruising through TripAdvisor .  You’ll find places to go, things to do, and places to eat and stay in this handy free app.

TripAdvisor is location-specific, so enter your destination and see lists of all of the great things a destination has to offer and honest, up-to-date user reviews from people who have been there!   TripAdvisor is a great way to get genuine reviews from real people before wasting your time and efforts.

When I need a place to stay, and the car or the RV just isn’t going to cut it, I use Hotels.com .  You can search along your route and see prices at a glance, discounted from the walk-in rate.  This app has come in incredibly handy when I need a room at the last minute.

Be aware, though, if you make a reservation through this app and, for some reason, change your mind on arrival, refunds are not easy.  The hotel will immediately tell you to take it up with Hotels.com, and you may wait more than a week for your refund.

This handy little app called Roadside Attractions is my personal favorite app for finding quirky roadside stops!  I have used it for everything from finding a spooky shoe tree on a back country road to finding the EPIC Headquarters, the most fantastic work campus that seems more like a theme park than a business.

I truly love this great app!  It can turn your RV road trip from meh to magnificent! There is a small one-time cost to use the app, but it has been more than worth it for me!

iExit is a nifty little app and just the thing to help you find a bite to eat, a gallon of gas, or a restroom as you travel.  Simply open the iExit app, which will use GPS to locate you on the Interstate, then give you a list of the upcoming exits and what you’ll find there, including fuel prices, truck stops, rest areas, and fast food restaurants!  I love this little app!

If you like to hear the story behind a story, this app is for you. Download the Talking Trail App , and when you are within a specified distance of a Talking Point, the app will notify you. A quick click on the map will give you a narrated story of the landmark you’re visiting. If you are a leisure traveler with time to learn and hear stories, you’ll LOVE Talking Trail.

Tips for Choosing an RV Travel App

Embarking on your next RV trip with the right app can transform your travel experience. Consider what you want when choosing the perfect app to accompany your RV journey.

The first step is recognizing what you need from an RV travel app. Are you seeking a straightforward navigation tool like Google Maps , or do you require more specific features such as finding RV parks, planning safe routes, locating gas stations, and even providing handy checklists? Knowing what’s essential will help streamline your choices.

User reviews and ratings provide invaluable insights into how well each option performs.  I certainly don’t know it all, and although I have used all of these apps, many others have also and may be able to answer your specific questions in a review.  Quickly browsing feedback on platforms like Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store will give you a balanced perspective.

RV apps come in different pricing models: free versions with optional paid upgrades (like Togo RV), full-featured premium ones (such as RV Trip Wizard), and freemiums that offer limited functionalities unless upgraded – select one that fits your budget constraints and ensures value for what you spend.

Of course, I recommend you try different options and compare their features whenever possible. Many of these apps offer free trial periods that will let you get a hands-on feel for their offerings firsthand and commitment-free. This practical exposure helps determine if a particular software ticks all of your boxes effectively, saving you time and effort.

When choosing the best RV travel app, identify your needs first. Consider user reviews and ratings for insight into performance. Analyze features and usability to ensure it caters to all aspects of RV life within your budget. Don’t forget a test drive before committing.

For many people, the classic American road trip is a rite of passage.

The 48 states on the continental U.S. are home to rolling hills, mountains, rivers, oceans and countless other attractions. And thanks to modern technology, planning the perfect road trip is easier than ever.

Just juice up your phone, make sure your car is ready to roll , grab your go-to road snacks, and let your smartphone do the hard work.

Apps, like Roadtrippers or InRoute, can do most of the route planning for you.

Begin by inputting your starting and ending point, then let it suggest fun places to check out, whether you're taking the direct route via the highways or the winding roads less traveled.

Roadtrip essentials

A good road trip needs these three things: Good snacks, an excellent playlist, and plenty of gas.

If you’re driving through an unfamiliar area, fill up your gas tank sooner rather than later to reduce the risk of getting stranded on empty.

Check out these apps to keep your car juiced up along the route:

  • Gas Buddy

Gas Buddy helps you find gas stations near you and tells you how much the gas costs.

Prices are put in by other users, so there is a chance prices may have changed by the time you arrive. If that happens, you can report the price change in the app.

PlugShare helps you locate EV charging stations that are compatible with a variety of electric vehicles.

And just in case you need it, because you almost certainly will, Toilet Finder can help you find a nearby facility to take a comfort break.

The app also tells you if the toilet can be used without charge and if it's wheelchair accessible.

Taking a road trip with a pet

If your copilot has fur and paws, BringFido will help you find dog-friendly places to stay, eat, visit, and more.

It even includes reviews from other users to help you make the best decision for you and your pet.

On the road again

By the way, before you hit play and take the wide-open road, download your car insurance app on your phone.

Hopefully, you won’t need it, but it can make it much easier to file a claim or call for roadside assistance.

Google Maps Trip Planner: How to use it in 2024?

Rishabh singh.

  • June 20, 2024

Arranging a dream vacation is exciting, but it can also be very stressful. You can follow travel guides, borrow other people’s itineraries, or—my personal favorite—use Google Maps Trip Planner to create the vacation of your dreams to give yourself peace of mind.

The Google app and web interface can be utilized to:

  • Add destinations.
  • Pin locations with color coding
  • Obtain directions to several locations.
  • Organize the ideal vacation.

By reading this article, you’ll learn how to use the Google Maps Trip Planner in a way that will change the way you plan your trips. From basic setup to advanced tips and tricks, I’ll make sure you know how to find the best routes, avoid potential problems, and make the most of your time.

How to Plan a Road Trip on Google Maps?

Google Maps Trips Planner

Planning a road trip can be fun, and Google Maps has many useful tools to help you do it quickly. By taking things one step at a time, you can ensure that your road trip is well-planned and fun.

Now for the exciting part: making travel plans. This is how I go about it:

Step 1: Generate a new custom map

Create a map

You’ll have a ton of options when maps open up. Give your map a name first. When you select “ Untitled Map ,” a dialog box containing the map’s name and description will appear.

I’m organizing a three-day trip to Gangotri in India for this example. We’ll refer to this map as “ Road Trip to Gangotri .”

You can add your locations to your map once you’ve given it a name.

Step 2: Include and personalize your places

The exciting part is about to begin: adding every location you want to see while traveling. I’m going to assume that you already have a list of locations, but if you don’t, use this opportunity to learn about the city and compile a list of attractions.

Making a list will greatly facilitate and expedite the planning process.

Google Maps uses “pins” to represent your locations. Use the search bar to find the location of interest before you begin adding pins.

Add place to map

Let’s begin with one of Mussories’s most well-known landmarks: Lachhiwala Nature Park.

When you search for a location, maps will enlarge it and give you the option to “ Add to Map .” You can add the point of interest to your map layer by clicking or tapping this button.

You can alter each point of interest’s color and icon to help you keep your pins more arranged.

Add location and change pin icons

A paint can icon will appear when you hover over the address. To access your customization choices, click it. You can select from a variety of icons on Google Maps, such as those for monuments, museums, gardens, and more.

Thanks to these icons, understanding each destination is a bit simpler. Additionally, that may facilitate the following step.

Step 3: Divide your journey into several layers or categories

Add layer

After setting that up, I can begin arranging my daily points of interest.

You are free to include any categories (or layers) in your trip plan as long as they are relevant.

If you’re organizing a road trip itinerary, for instance, you might decide to divide your journey into cities and include attractions in each one. Perhaps you would like to create categories for foods or particular interests. You can tailor Google Maps to your own travel preferences and style, which is a great feature.

How many levels is a map capable of having?

Although layers can help keep your map organized, don’t use them excessively. The maximum number of layers you can add is ten.

It might be necessary to carefully organize your layers or categories if you’re organizing a large, intricate trip.

For every layer, how many location pins can you add?

You can customize each map you make in My Maps with up to 2,000 different pins.

Step 4: Make travel arrangements

Now that you have established all of your categories, you can begin creating your schedule. Organizing points of interest into distinct layers or categories is simple. To move the pin, simply click and drag it to the desired location. In our example, I made three layers, one for each day, so I dragged each point of interest into the appropriate layer to plan my itinerary.

Total Layers

What happens, though, if you don’t divide your trip into days? What happens if you group your points of interest by city or category (restaurants, museums, etc.)?  Not a problem! You are free to arrange your layers however you see fit. The key is that Google My Maps facilitates easy trip visualization. You can quickly determine which points of interest are adjacent to one another. This makes making your itinerary in a digital planner or on paper simple.

Step 5: Make reservations

Now that you have arranged your travel, you can begin:

  • Make hotel reservations
  • Making reservations for car rentals
  • Making reservations for any tickets that may be required.

Plan your reservation as far in advance as you can. There’s a chance that rooms and tickets will sell out if you wait too long.

Step 6: Cite off your map

You can give your itinerary and map to friends and family if you’re traveling with them.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Return to the Google My Maps dashboard’s main screen.

Final Step- Share

You can use Twitter, Facebook, or email to share your map. If you have a website, you can also integrate your map into it.

Step 7: Use your phone to access your map

You’ve made your map and distributed it among your pals. However, you must have the Google Maps app installed on your phone in order to use it.

To view your maps on a mobile device, follow these steps:

  • Launch the Google Maps application.
  • Select Saved.

open google maps on phone

  • Click Maps at the bottom.
  • Select the map of your trip from the list.

Access Saved Trip Map on Mobile

Stay ahead in mapping and location technology!

What are the drawbacks of using google maps as an itinerary planner.

When used as a full itinerary planner, Google Maps isn’t as useful as it could be for finding your way and planning your routes. Here are three major problems that could make planning your trip harder, especially if you want more detailed and personalized help.

Google Maps Drawbacks

1. Lack of Detailed Itinerary Management

Google Maps does a great job of giving directions and showing routes, but it doesn’t do a great job of managing schedules. When travelers need to make a detailed itinerary with activities, accommodations, and scheduled events, Google Maps isn’t the best tool for organizing and managing all of these parts.

  • Limited Activity Planning : Google Maps lets you add more than one stop, but it doesn’t let you schedule activities or events in detail at each one. You can’t give each stop a time limit or make a schedule for your trip.
  • No Integration with Other Tools : Unlike specialized itinerary planners, Google Maps does not work with other travel planning services and tools, like booking systems for hotels, restaurants, or tours. This makes it harder to keep track of all the details of your trip.

2. Poor Collaboration and Sharing Options

Google Maps doesn’t have as many features for planning trips with a group as dedicated trip-planning apps. You can share routes and locations, but it doesn’t have the advanced tools for working together that many travelers need.

  • Simple Sharing Options: You can email or post on social media to share routes and locations, but Google Maps doesn’t offer a central location for groups to work together. You can’t edit an itinerary together with other people or see what changes other users have made.
  • Lack of Interactive Features: Unlike trip planning apps that provide interactive features such as voting on activities, commenting, and assigning tasks, Google Maps lacks these capabilities, making it less effective for collaborative planning.

3. Limited Flexibility and Customization

Google Maps API has powerful mapping and routing features, but it’s not very flexible or easy to customize:

  • Predefined Functions: The API is made to provide certain functions, like geocoding, routing, and mapping. It can be hard to change these features to fit the needs of a specific business, and you often have to find ways to get around problems.
  • Limited Access to Data: The API might not fully allow access to or customization of some data, like real-time traffic and historical traffic patterns. This could make it harder to create highly customized routing solutions.

Travelers who want a more powerful and adaptable way to plan their trips. Travel planning apps might be a better choice for people who need more advanced features for making itineraries.

Is There A Better Option For Route Planning?

A lot of people use Google Maps to plan simple routes, but it might not always work for businesses and advanced users who want more powerful and flexible tools. Nextbillion.ai is a better alternative that can handle the needs of complex logistics and delivery operations with its advanced route optimization features.

better route planner than google maps

Why Should You Use Nextbillion.ai to Plan Your Route?

Top Travel Insurance Companies Comparison

The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage options for a wide range of people and needs. For this guide, we looked at coverage options, customizability, and the best companies for specific situations, such as pre-existing conditions.

Here are Business Insider's picks for the best travel insurance companies in 2024.

Best Overall Travel Insurance

Nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide is of the largest players in the travel insurance space, offering nearly endless options for any customer on the travel spectrum, including annual travel insurance plans which can offer frequent travelers the flexibility to "set it and forget it" on their travel insurance coverage.

Nationwide Essential also offers some of the most affordable policies in the market compared to similar plans from competitors, which makes it a great pick for just about anyone. Buyers can discuss bundling options as Nationwide also sells homeowners, auto, pet, and other insurance products. Its travel insurance quoting is just as easy as it has been with other Nationwide insurance products.

Best Travel Insurance Runner-Up

Axa assistance usa.

AXA offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

Best Travel Insurance for Cruises

Travel guard.

AIG is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

Best Travel Insurance for Reputation

C&f travel insured.

While every travel insurance company has negative reviews about its claims process, C&F Travel Insured 's claims process has a consistent stream of positive reviews. One customer wrote that C&F processed a claim within 48 hours. Additionally, C&F regularly responds to customer reviews within one business week, making reviews a consistent way to reach the company.

Additionally, in C&F's fine print, it mentions that any claims that take more than 30 days to pay out will begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

C&F's reputation isn't the only thing to speak highly of. It offers an array of add-ons uncommon in the travel insurance industry, such as Interruption for Any Reason insurance and CFAR coverage for annual plans. C&F also offers discounts for children on its Protector Edge plan and free coverage on its Protector plan.

Best Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions

Tin leg travel insurance.

Tin Leg is a great fit for travelers with medical issues in particular. Seven of Tin Leg's eight travel plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment.

Thanks to coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as well as for potential COVID-19 infection while traveling, this company offers some of the best financial investment options for travelers who are or will be exposed to higher health risks and issues.

Best Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Worldtrips travel insurance.

WorldTrips has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

Best Travel Insurance for Affordability

Trawick international travel insurance.

Trawick is another insurance provider with robust medical travel insurance that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Read our Trawick Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips

Travelex travel insurance.

Travelex offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Welcome to Pet Peeves, a monthly series that aims to provide pet care solutions and expert advice for challenging scenarios that involve your beloved animal companions.

Traveling with pets may be relatively simple for those whose dogs love nothing more than jumping in the car and enjoying a weekend at the beach or a countryside getaway. But the reality is that not all pets find the experience or a change of scenery entirely comfortable. Whether you’re going on a road trip, traveling by train or flying with a cat or dog, it’s wise to have a plan: This means not only knowing what medical needs and documentation you should be on top prior to traveling, but also having a sense of how your pet will react to being in a carrier, a moving vehicle or a hotel room before you head out on a trip.

If you're traveling by plane with your pet, it's essential to have an airline-friendly carrier that ... [+] can fit under-seat.

To ensure you have all the tools you need to minimize stress and maximize comfort the next time you’re traveling with your pets, I talked to a veterinarian and a certified dog behavior consultant and trainer. Below, you can find expert guidance—plus my own advice, as someone who has traveled with both cats and dogs—about how to prepare, including what to discuss with your vet and what products could be helpful to have on hand.

If it’s not absolutely necessary to travel with your furry friend, consider your individual pet and whether taking them with you might be a positive or negative experience overall. “I really urge pet parents to think about their pet’s preferences, stress levels and behavior,” says Juliana DeWillems , owner of JW Dog Training. “Really think about if your dog or cat will have fun on the trip… Think about scenarios that stress your dog out, like crowds, other dogs, certain people, kids. Will those triggers be present a lot on your trip?” If so, she adds, it might be “best to leave your dog at home.” DeWillems also says she generally doesn’t recommend traveling with cats, who are especially sensitive to a change in environment.

Whitney Miller, DVM, chief veterinarian at Petco, also advises doing some research if you’re traveling to an unfamiliar area; for example, assess whether it’s pet-friendly and if there are places to buy emergency pet supplies if needed. And, of course, ensure that wherever you’re staying allows pets on the premises. “It might be better to leave your pet at home if you’re going to be walking around a lot and visiting places that are not pet-friendly, if it will consistently be very loud or you will have to leave your pet by themselves in a hotel all day,” she says.

How To Prepare For Traveling With Pets

If you’re going out of town with any pet, first and foremost, make sure that they are microchipped, vaccinated and up to date on flea, tick and heartworm preventatives. While this is applicable for all cats and dogs—and year-round—it’s particularly important to keep pets safe in the summer or if you’re headed to a warm destination.

“Before traveling anywhere, especially long distances, out of state or internationally, you should see your veterinarian for a checkup and let them know about your travel plans,” says Dr. Miller. “For interstate travel, you’ll typically need a health certificate issued within a certain time frame (typically three to 10 days depending on the state).” For international trips, check out the CDC’s guidelines on traveling with pets for more information on requirements. Dr. Miller adds: “A pre-trip checkup is also a great time to ask about calming supplements if you have concerns about travel, and ask if your vet is aware of any pertinent information for the area that you’re visiting, such as outbreaks, wildlife, special vaccine requirements or other regulations.”

Whether you’re traveling by car, plane, train or bus, “once you’ve identified what your pet will need to cope with during your travel, you can focus your training on recreating those conditions in a slow and positive way,” says DeWillems. “This is why giving yourself ample time is important: You can go at your pet’s pace. You can introduce them to the carrier, or work on longer and longer car rides, or practice having them under a seat in front of you in a way that they can feel comfortable with.”

And if you’re using a crate or carrier to transport your pets, make sure it’s not used exclusively during travel, adds Dr. Miller: “A crate is a safe space for many pets in daily life, and it can help them feel more secure to be transferred in it while in the car or plane. When introducing it to your pet, don’t rush the process and allow them to explore at their leisure.”

While calming treats or supplements for cats or dogs can be helpful to have on hand, they still may not provide the ideal result if you have a highly anxious pet. So if you know that they get very stressed in a carrier or during car rides, you might want to chat with your vet about prescription solutions, such as anti-anxiety medication.

Tips for the trip.

If you’ve decided to bring your pet (or pets) along for the trip, here are a few tips, tricks and helpful products to make the experience as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Feed Them A Few Hours Before Leaving

“It’s best not to feed your pet directly before you begin your travel or during your travel time,” says Dr. Miller. “Try to stick to their existing schedule, but feeding three to four hours before you begin travel is ideal as it gives your pet time to digest their food before traveling.” And if they take any medication or supplements, remember to pack enough to last the trip, plus a little extra in case you have any travel snafus.

If You’re Traveling By Car...

Make sure your pet is properly secured when they’re in a vehicle, no matter how short the drive. “This helps prevent distracted driving and keeps your pet safe if you stop suddenly or get in an accident,” says Dr. Miller. “For dogs, I suggest a dog seat belt, crash-tested harness or another appropriate device, such as a booster seat or kennel that can be properly secured.” And remember to never secure seat belts directly to your pet’s collar or leash for optimum safety.

I’ve had experience with the Maeve pet car seat from Tavo Pets , which, while an investment, is constructed using the same child safety standards as children’s car seats and rigorously tested for safety. For something a bit more budget-friendly, you can try a basic dog seat belt , a crash-tested harness that’s certified by the Center for Pet Safety or a booster seat that can be secured in your car. For cats, Dr. Miller advises a travel-safe carrier . A portable litter box will also come in handy, both during long rides and once you get to your destination.

Some other options for helping your pups stay comfortable include using a Thundershirt or weighted vest (or a heartbeat pillow , if you have a puppy). You can also consider spraying your dog’s carrier or your car with calming spray and/or using a pheromone collar. (DeWillems recommends the brands bSerene and Adaptil .) And if you’re taking a road trip and may be stopping in the evenings to give your dog a relief walk, a reflective vest can help ensure visibility in quieter areas with limited street lights.

If You’re Traveling By Plane...

Many of the guidelines for traveling by car can also apply to flying, in terms of reducing stress for your pet. That said, you need to be mindful of a few additional regulations. To start, make sure you have an airline-approved pet carrier that can fit under-seat and ensure you’re following all the guidelines of your particular airline. Chewy has a handy airline pet policy guide for all U.S. airlines, which includes information about weight and breed restrictions, fees for flying with pets and more. (Also note that emotional support animals are typically not considered service animals; these are two separate distinctions, so check your airline’s policy for what is required if traveling with an ESA versus a service animal.)

If you have a larger dog and are (rightfully) concerned if the only option is to fly with them in cargo— and you’re working with a bigger budget—the brand Bark has recently launched Bark Air , which is basically an airline for a handful of passengers and their dogs, chock-full of dog-friendly amenities. (I recently got a chance to check out one of the private jets .) Bark Air currently travels to limited destinations but has noted plans to expand service and ideally reduce prices down the line. It could be a convenient option if you’re moving cross-country or abroad with your dog, for instance, or can’t drive to your destination.

If You’re Staying In A Hotel...

If you’re bringing your dog or cat to pet-friendly accommodations—and you’re able to leave them unattended—you want to keep a few things in mind. First off, if you know your pet has separation anxiety, re-evaluate whether or not to take them with you to begin with—let alone leave them alone in a room. For all other situations, a pet camera may be helpful to keep in your hotel room if you’ll be away for any amount of time, as well as a blanket or mat from home that has their (or your) scent. You also want to leave your dog with some enrichment activities like a frozen Kong or long-lasting chew , and perhaps consider running a white-noise machine while you’re gone.

It’s also important to make sure your dog’s most important needs have been met before you leave them unattended. “Take them for a fulfilling walk, make sure they’ve been to the bathroom, make sure they have access to water and make sure they have a comfortable bed or crate to sleep in,” says DeWillems. Then, decide what setup will help them feel most comfortable. If you’ve been out with your dog all day, try to sit with them in the room and give them time to settle before you leave, as “going from exciting exercise or exploring to suddenly leaving them alone can cause a lot of stress,” she adds.

As someone with a highly confident cat who actually seems to enjoy exploring new environments, I’ve also traveled with him and left him unattended in a cat-friendly hotel room for a few hours without issue. But it could be helpful to bring something that can allow them to hide safely if they’d like to, like this collapsible cat tunnel bed (which my kitties are obsessed with).

If You’re Sharing A Space With Other Pets...

If you’re renting a home or spending time in a shared space with other friends or family who are also bringing their pets, it’s advisable to bring along gates, pens or crates to make sure each one has their own space at times. “I would especially recommend this if it’s dogs meeting for the first time, as introductions and relationship building can take time,” says DeWillems. She notes that even if your pet has never had an issue with other dogs or cats before, the combination of new environments, travel stress and lack of sleep can cause a change in a dog’s behavior. “I think a lot of us can relate to reduced tolerances of family or friends when sharing space for an extended period of time,” she adds. “Having your own space is a must.”
