Inspired by the French cruise liner SS Normandie, Le Pont de la Tour’s décor is rich and sleek featuring nautical elements throughout with a grown-up twist, evoking roaring twenties’ glamour, when the Normandie was first conceived, further emphasised by art deco upholstery and furniture.

Start your exclusive event with a champagne & canapé reception in our striking and contemporary bar while also enjoying the breath-taking views of the City & Tower Bridge from our summer/winter terrace. The main dining hall will then play host to the sumptuous meal.

The bar can also be used for the evening drinks and already has a built-in sound system.

Le Pont de la Tour

Le Pont de la Tour

SquareMeal Review of Le Pont de la Tour

Silver Award

“Magical”; “phenomenal”; “gorgeous”: readers can’t help but eulogise about Le Pont de La Tour and its photogenic location right by Tower Bridge. The restaurant has gone through a few different guises since opening back in 1991, but this latest incarnation is its most accessible.

Inside, leather banquettes and moody lighting create a “luxe” club-like feel, while dinner on the riverside terrace – with the sunset silhouetting Tower Bridge – makes you feel like the lead in a Richard Curtis romcom.

The restaurant still holds up as a “special occasion” venue noted for its “top-notch French cooking” – think seared foie gras on brioche with peach and pomegranate or roasted wild mushrooms with cep ketchup and consommé ahead of poached native lobster, tournedos Rossini or saddle of Yorkshire venison with baby beetroots, goat’s cheese, watercress and crispy kale. There are meat feasts for sharing, while dessert could be tarte Tatin or chocolate fondant with blood orange and a crème fraîche ‘cigar’.

While the carte is quite pricey, a seat on the coveted terrace needn’t cost a fortune – especially if you go for the astoundingly good-value set menu (including a glass of Moët & Chandon NV Brut): sweet, slightly saline ham-hock terrine with truffle mayonnaise, and a meaty slab of sea trout with broad beans both impressed on our visit, as did the “super-friendly” and “efficient” staff.

Our only complaint is that we’d like to see more accessibly priced wines on the lengthy global list, but that aside, Le Pont remains “a real treat” – a destination that can’t be beaten for its gorgeous riverside setting.

Good to know

pont de la tour shop

Located right next to Tower Bridge, Le Pont De La Tour is not just a restaurant, but also a bar, shop, wine merchant and bakery. Occupying the spacious ground floor of a warehouse building right by the edge of the Thames, this stylish venue is unsurprisingly home to some seriously stylish cuisine.

Starters here tease what is to come with the likes of velouté, Devon crab with brown shrimp cocktail or foie gras with ceps, spiced plum preserve and toasted brioche. These dishes send a clear message: unpretentious French fine dining. For seafood lovers there are oysters from Mersea, Porthilly or Colchester, served with the traditional mignonette, as well as lobster, crevettes or cherrystone clams. Increasing in decadence still, we see four choices of caviar, served with sour cream and blinis.

Main courses at Le Pont De La Tour's restaurant are again simple and elegant. Choose from lobster, sea bass, Dover sole, chicken, duck, pork, beef or cauliflower, each prepared in a traditional French manner but with modern updates. The Lake District pork cutlet, for example, comes with plum compote, seared lardo and red wine sauce, while the roasted lobster comes with garlic butter and sauce choron. For a romantic evening, or simply two guests who agree to share, there is a whole flame-grilled Cornish Turbot with hollandaise, or a 750g dry-aged Cumbrian fillet of beef with fries and béarnaise sauce.

Guests can round off their riverside revelry with French classics like crêpes Suzette, a selection of cheeses or, for a more simple dessert, house sorbet. There are extremely reasonably priced two and three course set menus for those not wanting to break the bank, and a children's menu too. The wine list doesn't focus entirely on France, although it is the epicentre, with plenty of red, white, rosé, sparkling and fortified options to accompany the food.

What is the menu like at Le Pont de la Tour?

Le Pont de la Tour has French menus full of classics like sole mariniere, steak frites and duck confit.

Does Le Pont de la Tour have a Michelin star?

Le Pont de la Tour doesn't have a Michelin star but it is recognised in the guide and has a Michelin plate.

Le Pont de la Tour means Tower Bridge in English, which refers to the restaurant's position looking onto the famous London landmark.

What is the dress code like at Le Pont de la Tour?

Few restaurants in London can claim to have a better location than this. For over 30 years, Le Pont de la Tour has been wowing diners with its jaw-dropping views of Tower Bridge, best appreciated from the terrace on a warm summer's day. The restaurant itself, as the name suggests, is thoroughly French at heart: expect confidently executed classics from ratatouille Niçoise to gratin Normande. The carefully chosen wine list offers a broad and interesting selection, of both the classic and the esoteric varieties.

Le Pont de La Tour

Le Pont de La Tour

This riverside homage to the wonders of classical French cookery has been wowing diners for over thirty years. With chef Tony Fleming at the helm, the food remains rooted in tradition but relevant to the present day.

Open Table Logo

If a chef trains in the UK, there’s a good chance they’ll have studied the arts of classical French cookery. Stocks, sauces, braises, pastry – so many elements of this country’s food and drink have worked their way across Europe and influenced the way ingredients are prepared, cooked and served. And while the greatest thing about London’s dining scene is just how varied and multicultural it is, there’s still something special about classic French fare. Le Pont de La Tour has decades of experience in producing it to the highest standard.

Chef Tony Fleming joined the restaurant at the start of 2020 to ensure the menu remained true to Le Pont de La Tour’s roots but continued to appeal to a modern day audience. The trappings of a classical French restaurant are clear to see in the beautiful décor – plenty of white tablecloths, touches of gold and a relaxed, charming ambience make the dining room perfect for long lunches or dinners that stretch into the night. Being based right next to Tower Bridge and overlooking the Thames results in some beautiful views, and the terrace area allows for al fresco dining.

The à la carte menu offers a concise selection of starters, mains and desserts which all thurm with French flavour and technique. There’s also a separate section for crustaceans and caviar, plus aa menu du jour and children’s menu, ensuring everyone is catered for.

The wine list is, as you’d imagine, heavily French focused, but there are plenty more bottles on offer from both the Old and New World too. The bar is heavily stocked with a huge array of spirits, which can be enjoyed neat or mixed into a large selection of cocktails.

Le Pont de La Tour may be over thirty years old – a huge stretch of time for any restaurant – but it still remains as enjoyable and exciting as it did when it first opened. It’s a place to indulge in the original meaning of hospitality with friends and family in a beautiful part of the capital.

The restaurant is only one aspect of Le Pont de La Tour – there’s also a deli, wine shop and a separate bar and grill area on site.

Le Pont de La Tour was opened as part of Sir Terence Conran’s ‘Gastrodome’ during his regeneration of the Shad Thames area in 1991.

There are plans to open a dedicated Crustacea Bar next to the terrace outside the restaurant for people seeking a truly special fruits de mer platter.

Tony Fleming

As a young chef, Tony Fleming was most influenced by French classicists like Nico Ladenis, Pierre Koffmann and Anton Mosimann and that early influence has guided his career ever since, through some of London’s most prestigious (and vertiginous) locations. Tony worked under Richard Neat at the Oxo Tower and for Marco Pierre White at Criterion and at the three Michelin-starred Oak Room before winning his own Michelin star at Angler. He now heads up the kitchen at D&D's Le Pont de La Tour.

Le Pont de la Tour opened back in 1991, as the showpiece of Terence Conran’s regeneration of the Shad Thames warehouse complex, dating back to the 1870s, also featuring the then Design Museum. At the time, going there felt almost exploratory —now it’s one of London’s lavishly served hubs.

Le Pont de la Tour received an historic consecration in 1997 when it hosted the Blairs and the Clintons, still an alarming snap. At this time, Conran was busily building a restaurant empire across London but in September 2006 his executives Des Gunewardena and David Loewi led a buyout, creating the D&D group, which now operates no fewer than 34 upmarket places, including some abroad, with revenues of more than £100 million a year.

On August 2 this year, Le Pont de la Tour closed for a makeover, with a new design from the ubiquitous and almost invariably good Russell Sage Studios. It re-opened on Monday, with a new head chef, too, Frederick Forster, brought over from Boundary, Sir Terence’s Shoreditch pride and joy.

Le Pont de la Tour’s amazing location needs no further description: it occupies an extraordinary length of the ground floor of a warehouse building right beside the Thames, giving glorious views both ways, most notably of Tower Bridge, lit up electric blue at night. There are plenty of tables under an awning outside the restaurant too, for more clement days. It’s exhilarating to eat here, just for the site alone.

pont de la tour shop

Sage’s redesign, though, makes the earlier incarnation feel as though it were oddly stark. He has divided up the length into two areas, a leathery banquette-dominated bar, with music (live at weekends), cocktails and a small-dishes menu, then a vast luxurious dining room, agreeably quiet, apparently taking inspiration from what many still rate as the greatest ocean liner ever, the SS Normandie, launched in Saint-Nazaire in 1935. There’s a lot of gilding and mirrors, intricately carved dark wood, half-height curtaining if needed, soft lighting from brassy lamps and big circular tables of radiating colour — as well as sumptuous amounts of white linen and shiny cutlery. The Art Deco-style chairs are stylish, if surprisingly hard — and there’s an extraordinary carpet throughout, apparently pre-distressed and composed of strongly geometric, abstract lines, maybe inspired a little by the designs of Edward McKnight Kauffer?

It’s a really grandiloquent, imposing room — with just a little serving island in the middle, topped with massive hydrangeas. Yet golden and impressive though this interior may be, it only enhances the glamour of the site and view. So this is an absolute success as a refurb.

The menu remains high French luxury without gratuitous innovation, expertly delivered, at a price. There are good deals offered — a three-course weekend lunch for £30, a more limited choice weekday lunch or early evening dinner for £23.50 for two courses, or £28.50 for three, plus service, plus drinks. But if you go à la carte, as you will probably want to do, and start exploring the rewarding wine list — this has always been a restaurant where the ratio of drinking to eating has been generous, possibly in tribute to the oft-expressed preferences of its founder — you’re on for a sizeable bill as well as a special occasion.

Forster is a young black Londoner who attended Westminster College and has subsequently had a pretty remarkable formation, training with Pierre Gagnaire, working at Le Gavroche, Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons with Raymond Blanc, in Barbados and Dubai as well as in France, and even for Gordon Ramsay. He has won both the Roux Scholarship and the National Chef of the Year but this is his first opening and it’s a whopping venue for that. Yet, however lavish the materials (oysters, lobsters, grouse and so forth) and however polished or even fussy the service, he has kept faith with an aesthetic of simplicity and “less is more” within classic cuisine.

From the starters, seared duck foie gras, black fig (£15) was just that — two tender slices, just crisped, with a piece of caramelised fig and a little Madeira and balsamic reduction. No brioche, no fuss: just utter luxury on a plate, the right quantities, perfectly judged. Roasted Orkney king scallop, violet artichoke (£12.50) was just as good: two meaty scallops, nicely browned, in quite a salty, well-reduced creamy foam, served from a little copper fait-tout, around a well-softened piece of artichoke. It came with a scattering of a succulent, slightly bitter and saline green, V-shaped vegetable that is new to me, a bit like samphire, originally from Asia, called salty finger, a curiosity now also grown in Cornwall.

From the mains, braised halibut, grelot onions, cauliflower, crab sauce (£24.95) was also ever so suave, perhaps even a little too smooth and flattering: an excellent, smallish piece of fish, surrounded with cauliflower purée and florets, with some of this trendy little onion (not so different from spring onion?) nicely poached, and a rich, smooth crab sauce provided to pour over.

Roast Yorkshire grouse, brussel tops, liver croute, blackberries (£26) was a treat: the bird was taken off the bone and served pink and redolent, the brassica just nice little bitter greens, the blackberries all that was needed in terms of a fruity component, a lovely wine reduction for gravy, a liquid and ideally bland bread sauce served in another copper pan on the side, a smallish piece of toast just softened with the liver... As good a grouse as ever I’ve eaten.

For puddings, a vanilla-poached half pear with some ice cream and a madeleine (£5.50) was excellent, although not really needing the last- minute crisping of extra sugar that it had been given. An impressive cheese-board (£9.50) rolled up, with the French classics tactfully interspersed with the best of British too, if you wanted to go that way, Stilton between the Roquefort and Bleu-d’Auvergne, Cheddar holding up its head between differently-aged Comté: a melty St Marcellin and a Calvados-infused Camembert were particularly good.

The sommelier was remarkably informative, warning that the comparatively cheap Château des Gravières Graves 2011 I suggested came from a less sunny year, more like 2007 than 2009 or 2010, and was quite green and grassy, as well as having the appellation’s earthiness and minerality: it complemented the grouse finely. A little glass of 2001 Château de Cérons (£9.50), a rarity from near Barsac, had a luscious, botrytised apricotiness, enhancing the pear. You could spend a fortune well on the wines here. There are great bottles under £100 if you’re living in that bracket, as many of the clientele seemed to be on Monday night.

On the night, we found the service excessive, not just obsequious and over-congratulatory (we were told “Enjoy!” on being given a plain piece of baguette) but almost harrassing, coming from too many quarters at the same time, charming, friendly and mostly properly French too although each individual was. Perhaps the rich feel lost if left more alone?

Le Pont de la Tour is not pushing boundaries, not trying to keep up with street food: it’s just giving pleasure. Save up a bit! as I once heard the chatelain of a castle say on Down Your Way, on being asked what day-trippers might think, on seeing him regale himself beyond the ropes. We paid £203.01 — gladly.
