Crowds welcomed the Princess Royal as she arrived in Glasgow to meet representatives of organisations which the Queen was patron of.

Princess Anne , accompanied by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, visited the City Chambers on Thursday afternoon.

Arriving to applause and the sound of bagpipes, Anne, the Queen’s only daughter, was met by Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren – in her capacity as Lord Lieutenant – before taking time to view flowers left by the public in tribute to her late mother.

She and Sir Tim then made their way over to greet the waiting crowd, and Anne appeared to be in good spirits as she stopped to talk to well-wishers.

Among the crowd was four-year-old Holly McBride, who had been waiting with her mother.

She handed Anne a bunch of pink daisies before shying away.

Anne was then led inside the City Chambers, where she met leader of Glasgow City Council Susan Aitken, director of finance Martin Booth, Lord Dean May Storrie, and deacon convener Bruce Reidford.

She then spent some time at a reception with representatives from various organisations of which the Queen served as patron, including Friends of Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow Caledonian University, Royal British Legion of Scotland, YMCA, Royal Scottish Society of Arts, Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, Lambhill Stables and the RSNO.

Rachel Ducker, director of finance at Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, said there was a “positive atmosphere” during the visit, despite there being a sombre reasoning behind it.

Ms Ducker told the PA news agency: “The Queen was the patron of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, and she sort of championed our volunteering.

“We’ve got over 8,000 volunteers across Scotland, and she was a real champion of that.

“It was lovely to bring three volunteers with us today to speak to Princess Anne about their involvement in volunteering, and for her to see the impact that her mother’s patronage had on the charity.”

Hilary Harris, acting chair of Lambhill Stables, a community organisation in the north of Glasgow, praised the “total engagement” Anne gave each representative during the visit.

“She came and sat at the table, she had a place set for her, and she came and sat with us. There was eight volunteers from our organisation,” Ms Harris told PA.

“She spoke individually to everyone, asked them all what they did, and gave them plenty opportunity to speak to her.

“Total engagement, total eye contact, everything, and she knew everything about the organisation, so she led the conversation.

“She knew we had gardens, she knew about the cafe, she knew what we did, she knew when it was renovated.

“Very impressive.”

The royal couple then then visited the Satinwood Suite within the chambers, where they met members of the public who were signing a book of condolence in memory of the Queen.

The Princess Royal told well-wishers today that the floral tributes to the late Queen were 'really and truly out of this world' as she comforted grieving children in Glasgow upon her return to Scotland after accompanying her mother's body to London.

Princess Anne , 72, the late monarch's only daughter, has been leading the royal family in mourning the late Queen this week, having been by her bedside when she died last Thursday.

In an emotional journey through the country, she accompanied her mother's body from Balmoral, through the streets of Edinburgh and down to Buckingham Palace , where she laid in rest for the final time.

The mother-of-two then joined her siblings in a funeral procession through the streets of London, before an emotional service in front of the Queen 's coffin, yesterday.

And today, Princess Anne, who has long been known as the hardest working royal, returned to Scotland where she greeted mourners who were grieving her mother and said the flower tribute outside Glasgow’s City Chambers was ‘really and truly out of this world’ as she thanked well-wishers.

She appeared to be in good spirits, offering comforting words to weeping royal fans and chatting with young children who were standing in the crowd. She said that she had been made to feel ‘very welcome’.

One well wisher, Andrena, 78, from Glassford in South Lanarkshire, spoke to Princess Anne as she admired the flowers on display and told her she had ‘written to the Queen during the diamond Jubilee’. Princess Anne told her: 'Glad you got the chance to do that.'

Despite the challenging circumstances of the engagement today, the Princess Royal's rapport with the children in the crowd was obviously.

It is perhaps a skill she has honed thanks to her close relationship with her grandchildren, Savannah and Isla Philips and Mia, Lena and Lucas Tindall.

Anne's full statement said: 'I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest mother's life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys.

'Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.

'We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss.

'I am also so grateful for the support and understanding offered to my dear brother Charles as he accepts the added responsibilities of the monarch. To my mother, The Queen, thank you.'

She ended her statement with the words: 'To my mother, The Queen, thank you.'

Her tribute was shared to the Royal Family's Instagram account along with a photo of Anne and the Queen, which was first released to mark the late monarch's 90th birthday in 2016.  The mother and daughter posed on a sofa in the White Drawing Room of Windsor Castle.

Born in 1950, Princess Anne was the Queen's second child and only daughter, and even went through a rebellious stage as a teenager, once telling photographers to 'naff off.' There were also flings, including a kiss and tell from her police bodyguard.

However the Princess Royal, who was renowned for being Prince Philip's favourite child, became closer to the Queen. The monarch is understood to have come to rely heavily on Anne before her death.

Anne, who describes herself as 'fuddy duddy', is regarded by many as the hardest-working member of the royal family, having completed more than 20,000 engagements.

The experts believe that the Queen had given her daughter more and more responsibility as she was someone she could trust. She was similar to her father in character, with one biographer previously writing: ‘She gets on with it – she never complains.'

Strong and opinionated, she has a waspish wit and is a staunch believer in ‘The Firm’, saying of her mother: ‘She is remarkable.’

In a rare interview for a BBC1 documentary to mark the jubilee, she said it was 'extraordinary' for anybody to claim her mother has ever not cared about her children.

Anne said her mother was never uncaring, although protocol demanded that her children and grandchildren have to bow or curtsey to her and she spent a lot of time apart from them.

In the interview, Anne explained: 'I simply don't believe there is any evidence whatsoever to suggest that she wasn't caring. It just beggars belief.'

She added: 'I don't believe any of us for a second thought that she didn't care for us in exactly the same way as any other mother did. I just think it extraordinary that anybody could construe that that might not be true.'

The princess said she does not understand people who ask her if she sees the Queen as her mother or as a monarch: 'She's my mother and the Queen.'

The princess was in Scotland when the Queen was taken ill, and stayed at her bedside at Balmoral Castle, as senior royals rushed to say their final farewells.

Elizabeth II - the nation's longest reigning monarch - died peacefully on Thursday September 8.

Anne was on the duty of accompanying her mother's body back to London, with the Queen leaving Scotland for the last time bound for RAF Northolt on Tuesday.

The Queen's oak coffin, accompanied by Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, travelled to Buckingham Palace where King Charles III, the Queen Consort, the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex received it.

Also there were the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank, Zara and Mike Tindall, Lady Louise Windsor and Viscount Severn, and Princess Margaret's children Lady Sarah Chatto and Earl Snowdon.

And earlier this week, Anne made history when she became the first royal woman to take part in the 'Vigil of Princes' - standing vigil by her mother's coffin alongside her brothers King Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

During the 20-minute vigil at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, Princess Anne, who wore her navy ceremonial uniform, kept her eyes fixed towards the floor.

On Wednesday, the Queen was joined by her daughter, Princess Anne, for a day of engagements. The monarch appeared to be in high spirits in a bright royal blue ensemble (the latest in a string of outfits that match the Scottish flag), while her daughter donned a sleek pale blue coat of scarf. The duo visited a dedicated green space, the Children's Wood Project in Glasgow, where, said Buckingham Palace, they learnt 'about the work of the outdoor community initiative, which aims to encourage a happy, healthy and resilient community through access to green space and outdoor learning.'

The royals chatted with local young people about the the project, particularly in terms of the importance of 'having access to the outdoor space… during the pandemic.' They met with volunteer beekeepers who tend the hives at the site, and community gardeners who have allotments there. The Queen and the Princess Royal also spoke to schoolchildren and teachers from East Park Primary School, who are involved in forest school sessions at the Wood Project.

The monarch and her daughter then went on to Skypark in Glasgow, 'to meet two companies who are leading the way in the space technology field.' They spoke with staff from AAC Clyde Space (which creates special satellites for purposes like maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring and weather forecasting), along with representatives from the UK Space Agency. They then proceeded to the offices of Spire Global, where they watched a demonstration about the data that's collected by the company's satellites.

Previously, on Tuesday, having been in the company of her grandson, the Duke of Cambridge, on day one of the trip, the Queen hosted her first solo engagement. The monarch welcomed the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The pair were photographed smiling and chatting amicably, while carefully abiding by social distancing guidelines.

Her Majesty donned a blue patterned dress for the occasion, while Sturgeon opted for a sky blue skirt suit. The also Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, Alison Johnstone, was also hosted by the Queen for an audience – and she clearly received the fashion memo, choosing to wear a dark blue ensemble.

The Queen also visited visited Stirling Castle on Tuesday, to officially reopen The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum. The monarch is Patron of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Association, having originally been named Colonel-in-Chief of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on her 21st birthday by her father, King George VI. She remained in the role until 2006, when the Highlanders became part of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Buckingham Palace announced that 'During the visit, The Queen was presented with the keys to Stirling Castle before viewing a range of exhibitions on display which reflect the Highlanders' proud military history', as well as unveiling a special plaque to mark the reopening. The event was quite the milestone, given that The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum, set inside one of the oldest remaining structures in Stirling Castle, has been closed for three years for a major revamp.

Prince William visiting the BAE Systems shipyard to observe construction of HMS Glasgow

Earlier in the day, the Duke of Cambridge attended a solo engagement of his own. Prince William visited the BAE Systems shipbuilding yard, where he saw the new HMS Glasgow under construction. Hello! reports that he also announced that the Duchess of Cambridge will be the sponsor of the Royal Navy vessel, stating: 'Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of my wife Catherine as Sponsor of the superb ship we see taking shape outside – HMS Glasgow. I know that Catherine will be delighted to join you here in Glasgow for the naming ceremony in due course.'

The Queen

The Queen was previously joined on Monday by her grandson and second in line to the throne, who goes by the title of the Earl of Strathearn in Scotland. The pair visited the Irn-Bru factory – described as a 'Scottish institution' by the official Royal Family Instagram account. Her Majesty wore an elegant sky blue ensemble for the visit, while William donned a smart navy suit and complementary blue tie. The Instagram caption relates that AG Barr has been making its famous soft drinks 'since it was founded by Robert Barr in 1875' and that today, 'it employs almost a thousand people.' William seems to have a penchant for the Irn-Bru, as he even 'tasted a sample before trying to guess the closely guarded secret recipe'.

The duo then went on to the Palace of Holyroodhouse for the traditional Ceremony of the Keys. There, the Royal Family account explained, 'the Lord Provost of Edinburgh presented the keys of the City to Her Majesty', in a 'very ancient ceremony that happens every time the Sovereign visits the City.' During the event, 'The keys are borne by the City Chamberlain on a cushion of red velvet, edged with gold braided fringe and with thistles embroidered at is four corners,' then: 'The Lord Provost says: "We, the Lord Provost and the members of the City of Edinburgh District Council, welcome your Majesty to the capital city of your ancient & hereditary kingdom of Scotland and offer for your gracious acceptance the keys of Your Majesty's good City of Edinburgh".

'The Queen then returns the keys saying: "I return these keys, being perfectly convinced that they cannot be placed in better hands than those of the Lord Provost and Councillors of my good City of Edinburgh".'

The Queen then undertook a special inspection of the Guard of Honour provided by the Balaklava Company, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

According to a Buckingham Palace statement, the Queen is spending her time in Scotland between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling, visiting: 'businesses, charities and cultural institutions that highlight the pioneering work taking place to further community engagement, education, technology, and efforts to combat climate change.'

Traditionally, Royal Week would see the Queen hosting one of her summer garden parties with members of the public invited, yet due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, the event has been cancelled this year.

The week-long visit is the first time that the Queen has visited the country since the death of her beloved husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. It holds many happy memories for her, from her summer visits to Balmoral, to her stays at The Queen Mother's former home, the Castle of Mey (now open to the public as a B&B). She did not take part in Royal Week in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Last year, the Queen appointed Prince William as Lord High Commissioner in Scotland, a role that usually lasts for 12 months. Due to the pandemic, he was once again given the title this year. According to the government's website: 'He attends the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on behalf of the Sovereign. He makes the opening and closing addresses to the Assembly and carries out a number of official functions as the Lord High Commissioner.'

It is hoped the royal visit might gee up support for the monarchy and for the United Kingdom in Scotland, following continued pushes for a new independence vote by the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon.
