Razorlight are a band hailing from London, England who formed in 2002. Since their debut, they have released three studio albums and are famous in the U.K for being one of the most successful bands of the mid-2000's post-punk revival.

For a period of time, Razorlight were one of the biggest bands in the United Kingdom. Far eclipsing everyone else who had come out of the same East London indie rock scene, even though that scene brought the world everyone from The Libertines to Bloc Party. From 2004 to around 2007, they were only second to Arctic Monkeys themselves in terms of albums sales, fan devotion, radio play and sheer popularity. However, the crucial thing to remember about Razorlight is that no amount of success, no matter how all-encompassing it was, was ever going to be enough for their frontman, one Mr. Johnny Borrell. Borrell formed the band in 2002, after ditching a solo career that he'd spent as an intense, young singer/songwriter supporting bands like the aforementioned Libertines in Whitechapel bars. Once he'd put together the first line-up of the band, and recruited NME scribe Roger Morton as the band's manager, the band made their live debut supporting The Von Bondies at Camden's Dingwalls and recorded demo versions of their songs “Rock 'n' Roll Lies”, “Rip It Up” and “In The City” shortly afterwards.

Borrell soon became something of an indie rock celebrity, thanks to his pin-up looks and habit of saying things in the press that were alternately bonkers, brilliant, disgustingly arrogant or a hybrid of all three. As I said before, no amount of success would satisfy the ambitious young rocker, so the sheer amount of critical acclaim and commercial success that they enjoyed straight out of the gate is arguably the best and worst thing to happen to Razorlight in their entire career. After the band signed with Mercury Records, their debut album “Up All Night” was released in June 2004, and was an immediate top three hit. In 2005, after their single “Somewhere Else” had crashed into the singles chart at number two, the band solidified their place as the next big thing by performing to an audience of 200'000 people at that summer's Live 8 festival in Hyde Park.

Their self-titled second album saw them ascend into the stratosphere. After its release in 2006, the band secured their first number one single in the form of “America”, Borrell's co-writing effort with their drummer Andy Burrows, and support slots with Queen + Paul Rodgers, The Rolling Stones and Oasis followed in short order. In October, they embarked on a sold out tour of arenas in the UK and the following year, they capped off their imperial phase by headlining the Reading and Leeds festivals, the biggest gigs of their career by far. Ever since then, the band have remained one of the most beloved acts of the 2000's as much for their singer's eccentricities a for their titanic back catalogue of hits and their consummate live show. For remaining relevant well past a lot of their peers, Razorlight come highly recommended.

Live reviews

I caught Razorlight in person earlier this year and those guys rocked the roof off of the house. Somehow I actually hadn’t listened to much of their work before going, even though they were such a huge hit in the early 2000s.

Lucky me, I got to experience all of their work for the first time live in concert, and I can’t imagine ever wanting to listen to recorded studio performances after seeing how amazing they were in person! Razorlight had the entire crowd captivated from the second they stepped on the stage until the club finally kicked everybody out so we couldn’t beg for yet another encore anymore.

They’ve got the whole package: hypnotic rhythms, driving basslines, and memorable hooks. On top of their immense talent, their passion for music is readily apparent in everything about the way they look and act. I could see any of the four grocery shopping and instantly know that they are rock stars; that’s how incredibly charismatic they are.

Razorlight is kind of on hiatus with some plans for a new album, but they are playing in several festivals this year so make sure to go check them out if you have the opportunity to.

I’m really sad to say that on this occasion I was a bit disappointed with razorlight.

I got the impression that Johnny Burrell just wanted to get the job done and get finished for the day, there was no interaction with the crowd to speak of and no real energy.

I saw razorlight at the same venue last year and it was fantastic as they always used to be in the good old days.

I hope it was either me missing something or just an off day and I hope next time I see them it’s business as usual.

What a great show. First local band Average Sex played a great set and then we were treated to the return of Razorlight - back to form - as if the 10 years between albums was non existent.

They interspersed new (great) songs with the old faves - everyone singing along. Well done both Average Sex and Razorlight.

Wicked gig! Great mix of old and new stuff, and heaps of energy. As a fan since the early 2000's, I couldn't have asked for anything more and I would hazard to say they sound even better live than on record. Top stuff!

It was my first Razorlight show as I think they'll never play in my homeland. The show was terrific. I really enjoyed it and had a good time. The location was good and Johnny was very nice.

“My trust with Andy was at absolute zero so to get that back was really inspiring,” Borrell said in a statement. “That’s never happened before and it made me think a lot about my life, like if I can get my trust back with Andy, I could do it with anybody.”

The story of the band's reunion and reconciliation has been told in the documentary Razorlight: Fall To Pieces, which premiered at the Raindance Film Festival at the end of October.

“I had to go and chat with Johnny and make things good,” added Burrows. “If I didn’t, I’d have gone on thinking about it for the rest of my life, that we should’ve met up, we should’ve played together again, it was too special to leave behind.”

He went on: “While our relationship hasn’t always been plain sailing, when Johnny and I sit down to write music together, there’s a magic that happens. I’m so grateful to have him and the band back in my life."

Razorlight announce first tour with classic line-up in 10 years

Pip Ellwood-Hughes

Razorlight has reunited its classic line-up for a run of tour dates across the UK in 2023.

The run is the band's first with its original line-up in ten years and includes shows at Albert Hall Manchester, Rock City Nottingham and O2 Academy Brixton.

The shows will support the band's new album ‘Razorwhat? The Best of Razorlight', released on 9th December 2022 via EMI. The release collates 11 of their finest moments plus two new tracks, ‘You Are Entering The Human Heart’ and Violence Forever?’.

“I had to go and chat with Johnny and make things good,” recalls Burrows. “If I didn’t, I’d have gone on thinking about it for the rest of my life, that we should’ve met up, we should’ve played together again, it was too special to leave behind.”

Bridges have been built. The artistic, and sometimes unwieldy, connection between the two has been re-established. It has been a heartening experience for those involved.

“My trust with Andy was at absolute zero so to get that back was really inspiring,” says Borrell. “That’s never happened before and it made me think a lot about my life, like if I can get my trust back with Andy, I could do it with anybody.” “Whilst our relationship hasn’t always been plain sailing, when Johnny and I sit down to write music together, there’s a magic that happens. I’m so grateful to have him and the band back in my life,” agrees Burrows.

The band's UK dates are:

The band were also the subject of a new documentary called  Fall To Pieces . Directed by Ben Lowe, the film tells the “untold story” of the band, who formed in London in 2002. Its title was inspired by the name of Razorlight’s 2006 single ‘Before I Fall To Pieces’.

Speaking about his decision to reconcile after 11 years away in the film’s trailer, Burrows said: “If I don’t do it, I think I’m gonna probably think about it for the rest of time. I don’t know… the last Johnny I knew was Johnny [in] 2009. It strikes me as mighty surreal today – I’ve go no idea what to expect.”

Reviewing  Fall To Pieces ,  NME  wrote: “Borrell and Burrows’ love-hate relationship sits at the centre of the film. In many ways it’s not dissimilar from Matt and Luke Goss’ rocky bromance in 2019  Bros  documentary  After The Screaming Stops  and at times it’s almost as cringe-worthy and David Brent-like.

“However, when Borrell and Burrows do eventually reunite after 11 years of not talking, it’s a genuinely touching moment. Each confesses past insecurities and they finally clear the air.”

Of the new dates, Razorlight commented, “Due to recent events at O2 Academy Brixton our London show has been rescheduled to the Eventim Apollo on May 12. The band’s newly-released Razorwhat? The Best Of Razorlight features 11 of their finest moments , including two thrilling new tracks – the previously released bittersweet piano-pop “You Are Entering The Human Heart” and the blistering “Violence Forever?.”

Violence Forever?

It was back in April 2021 when Johnny Borrell, Andy Burrows, Björn Ågren and Carl Dalemo revealed they’d been back working together for the first time in over a decade, correcting the unsatisfactory conclusion to their original formation.

Crucial to the group’s reunion was an emotional meeting between Borrell and Burrows near Johnny’s home in the Basque country in summer, 2020, which plays a pivotal part in the groups Fall To Pieces documentary, which premiered at this year’s Raindance film festival.

“I had to go and chat with Johnny and make things good,” recalls Burrows. “If I didn’t, I’d have gone on thinking about it for the rest of my life – that we should’ve met up, we should’ve played together again, it was too special to leave behind. I think our best single is one we haven’t done yet, hopefully we’ll do the Best Of and get more music out next year, then tour in the spring. It’s gonna be interesting, that’s all I can say.”

Bridges have been built. The artistic, and sometimes unwieldy, connection between the two has been re-established. It has been a heartening experience for those involved.

“My trust with Andy was at absolute zero so to get that back was really inspiring,” says Borrell. “That’s never happened before and it made me think a lot about my life, like if I can get my trust back with Andy, I could do it with anybody.”

“Whilst our relationship hasn’t always been plain sailing when Johnny and I sit down to write music together, there’s a magic that happens. I’m so grateful to have him and the band back in my life,” agrees Burrows.
