It is time to get ready, the gingerbread has been in the shops for weeks, it gets dark much earlier with the clocks back on normal time and the temperatures are very slowly going down.

While I have no specific plans for this season I know many of you have booked a river cruise. I thought perhaps we could throw info and tips into this thread. Excitement guaranteed and fun shared is doubled!

Where are you going? First time during winter? Have you been in the past, any favourite places? Tips for those who are thinking of a last minute (or for 2023) booking?

I was so excited to see this link!  We leave for Basel exactly three weeks from today.  We are on the Viking Alruna from Basel to Amsterdam. We have cruised many times but this is our first ever river cruise and the fact that it is to the Christmas markets makes it all the more special.  This is a retirement cruise and a trip I could never have made working full time.  The link was very informative and I will look for additional tips and suggestions.  And, yes, this is our first winter trip so any suggestions for packing, cold weather gear and clothing would be appreciated.  We are from Connecticut so cold winter weather is the norm.

We are excited for our first river cruise in December.  Basel to Amsterdam. Will have two days in Basel before we start cruising,  plan to explore Basel and Colmar, France.  Have waterproof shoes/boots, multiple layers to mix and match depending on the day.  Only real prep left is reading a bit more about each stop so we know options.  Have been in holiday prep mode too as everything must be done before we leave for the  11 days.  All Christmas shopping is done, cards addressed and presents wrapped,   So hoping to find wonderful gifts in the Markets and have most of next years shopping done too!   With Christmas markets basically everyday, I have to hope I can be patient with our shopping so that I don’t run out of  funds or space in luggage in the first few days of the trip.  Of course, there is always shipping home.  Have no tips as this is our first River cruise,  but ready to hear from experienced Christmas market cruisers.

Hello newcomers to river cruising - and both Basel to Amsterdam! Well, it is probably the most frequent route in Europe and very popular for a first river cruise. Weather and clothes, very important.

Not much different from home then I would say. The Rhine has a mild climate so really cold days below freezing do not happen all the time, but it can be icy and wet.

Yes, that should work really well. Scarf for the windy sundeck and gloves for early morning excursions are good to have.

Overall, the temperature range is usually minus 5 Celsius in the hills, especially Switzerland, on cold days to plus 12 Celsius on a day when during a warm spell the sun brings the temperature up in the afternoon. Nights can sometimes be colder and days occasionally a little warmer in sheltered areas and towns close to the river.

This year November has started with mild temperatures and it is currently 12 to 13 Celsius in the valley.

One thing you may want to note, those that are leaving early in the season: Sunday of the Dead (this year on 20 November) is traditionally a "quiet day" and by law Christmas markets are restricted in their opening hours. If a Christmas market starts before that day it may be closed or open late on the Sunday.

We have enjoyed four Christmas market cruises with different companies on the Rhine, Main, Danube, and Elbe rivers (a much less common Christmas market cruise).  We have also visited markets in non-cruise cities, like Lubeck and Leipzig.  They were all different, and we loved all of them.  Our favorite market item is the wooden German pyramid, and we have brought home several as gifts for our adult children.  We bought our first one at the Munich Christmas market on a family trip in 1989, and they've become a much loved tradition.  This year we are going on a short Avalon market cruise from Frankfurt to Basel.  There are pyramids made in other countries like China, so it's important to establish the origin, if you want a good quality German one.  I think many are made in the Erzebirge area of Germany.   We have found the pyramids only in the German markets and didn't see them in other countries.  They may have made their way across borders by now, however.  I order new candles from a company in PA.

We are on the Rhine in just over 3 weeks - going south from Dusseldorf. I am taking waterproof walking boots and hope to buy some new gloves on a Christmas Market stall. So excited!

DH and I have been to the Christmas market in Munich on land trips before, but it will be our first time doing a Christmas market cruise.  We'll be on the Viking Astrild starting on 16 December with two days on our own in Hamburg before and then three in Berlin.  We're excited to visit the city where The Beatles honed their performance skills and it will be the first time visiting Berlin since reunification for me and first time ever for DH.

There is not much out there on the Christmas markets on the Elbe sailings, so would love to hear any tips from @frenchhorn (an instrument both DH and I played in school orchestras!)

And, as always, thanks to @notamermaid for starting this thread and all the great information!

It's hard to believe the Christmas markets are getting ready to open soon when the weather forecast for today is 22°C  here in Ontario,  Canada. 

My suggestion for the shopper is to leave space in your suitcase for your treasures,  and fill that space with as much bubble wrap as you can. Let the suitcase bulge! Pack a roll of tape. After you get back on board from your first Christmas  market show-and-tell about your purchases,  share some of that bubble wrap.   You will have new best friends 😄

Bring mittens,  not gloves if your hands are always cold.  Earmuffs.   If your coat is waterproof,  that's a bonus, then you don't need an umbrella which can be a nuisance to carry in a  crowd.  Wear a mask. It will keep your chin and nose warm...and help protect you, too.

@loriva  If you haven’t been back to Berlin since the wall came down, you are in for a big surprise. I was stationed there in the early ‘70s and then visited several years ago albeit not at Christmas time. I understand from a niece that lived in Berlin recently that there are a number of Christmas Markets to visit. Dresden also has a large market.  Some things remained the same such as the Hollow Tooth, Lipstick and Powder Box as well as the Pregnant Oyster; others were masterfully reconstructed and modernized like the Reichstag. Don’t miss touring the Reichstag, try for a timed entry that will let you enjoy sunset or sunrise; do this online in advance. 

We really enjoyed visiting Museum Island to see the interior of buildings not accessible to us when we lived there. Walking through the Brandenburg Gate, looking straight up at The Pope’s Revenge, and visiting the museum at the former Outpost Theater and our former apartment in the “US housing area” also brought back memories and emotions.   

Wow, reading what you all plan to wear for visiting the Christmas markets here in Germany makes me rethink my outfits  😉 . Currently we do have 10°C and a bit of rain here in Munich. It´s supposed to get warmer by next week again. October was pretty hot - up to 24°C (more summer than fall).

The Christmas tree for the main market here in Munich has just arrived last week. The main Christmas Market does open Nov 21st (more here ).

But almost every part of the city has it´s own market. There´s a list here (click on "mehr laden" for more markets). Some open already Nov 17th (and are closed on Nov 20th all day - as notamermaid mentioned). My favorites are Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt, Weihnachtsdorf in der Residenz or Mittelalter Weihnachtsmarkt (at Wittelsbacher Platz). One market won´t open in 2022 and it´s one of my favorites too, Weihnachtsmarkt am Chinesischen Turm. The Chinesischer Turm (Chinese tower) is under renovation this winter and they also redo water pipes and more. Therefore there is no space for the market.

"The" market is the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt which opens Nov 25th (more here ). I´ve been to Nuremberg a week ago and saw the first lights already mounted.

Regensburg and Passau have great markets too.

So for all those of you who are on a Danube river cruise for the markets.

The Dresden Christmas Market is one of my favorites!  This was a land trip for us not a river cruise. The markets in Berlin are wonderful, Have a great time!

I played the horn in high school and college bands and orchestras.  It's a wonderful instrument to hear and to play. 

Our Elbe Christmas cruise was in 2014 on Grand Circle from Dresden to Berlin, and we spent extra time on our own in Berlin, Leipzig, and Lubeck.  Depending upon the timing and your interests, you might be able to find special music in some of the churches.  We heard a brass concert in Berlin and  Bach's Christmas Oratorio in the Meissen Cathedral and also in St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.  Prague will have a lot of music with signs outside churches and other venues.  

Foodwise, Dresden is known for stollen, and Berlin is known for currywurst.  We tried currywurst - I thought it was awful, but my husband liked it.  There is a curry-flavored sauce on the wurst. 

The cities and markets on the Elbe cruise are mostly less crowded. Dresden's market was jammed, but we were there on opening day in November with its many special events.  The Berlin market at Gendarmenmarkt was especially pretty with white tents.  Other markets in Berlin seem to specialize in specific types of goods.  We stopped at another very small market in a small town, but I don't remember what town it was.    

The weather was a bit colder on the Elbe than in the other parts of Germany that we'd visited other years, but it's variable.  My husband bought a much needed wool watch cap at one of the stalls on the Elbe. We went without coats in Munich once just before Christmas, and we needed scarves and several layers at other times.  We like silk long underwear for extra warmth.  We never had heavy rain, and we never saw snow, but we were ready with rain gear with hoods.  The coldest we ever were was in Budpest at the end of December - windy and bitter at the Fisherman's Bastion.

Ours are either plain regional - and not that big - or from Denmark perhaps.

It was a bit too warm here along the Rhine but today it is a bit cooler and the wind has increased. We had a downpour last night.

Erzgebirge is the region where they come from, that is correct. They may be manufactured elsewhere now in similar styles. Chinese ones are available, do check, they should be labelled or ask the vendor. The original handicraft from the Ore Mountains is really expensive. My pleasure. Plenty of time to look around then. Düsseldorf is quite different from Cologne. No Roman remains and a bit more "sophistication" in my opinion.

I am going to read every word of this thread soon, but in the meantime... We are from the Southern US and do not have much use for snow boots. What recommendations would you have for brands of men's boots be they water repellent, or resistant? My DH needs some for this cruise. 

We are leaving in a month on Viking from Amsterdam to Basal. We are then going to spend a few days in Zurich before heading back. Thanks.

Thanks to advice from someone on these boards, I booked dinner at the restaurant on top of the Reichstag last month!  Looking forward to it.  Thanks for the many great tips.  Trying to figure out our touring so we don't overlap too much with the included Viking tour (which is likely mostly panoramic).  So far planning a walking tour to visit some of the WWII and Cold War sites, a good spell on Museum Island, and, of course, some breweries and Berliner currywurst.

@notamermaid  Munich usually gets a tree which has to be cut anyway. So this year it was a tree from a nearby county which had to be cut because it was grown too high and became a risk.

@Seminole1975  for Christmas markets snow boots are usually not necessary. We usually don´t have any or much snow for November or December unless you are in the mountains (higher than 1,000 m / 3,000 ft). Water resistant is a good idea as it can rain or we have some slushy, muddy rests of snow on the streets.

Here's what I can find for some starting dates, for those of us sailing on Danube the next few weeks.  Best info I could find, please verify on your own, and sorry if it's wrong    🙂 :

Bratislava:   Bratislava Christmas Market dates:   22nd November to 22nd December 2022. Location:   Hlavné Námestie (Main Square), Hviezdoslav Square and Františkánske Square.

Budapest:  I'm not posting anything here, as it isn't an easy cut and paste answer.  If someone knows more than this, please chime in.

The main market, Vorosmarty Square, wasn't able to sign a contract with a vendor in enough time to get it set up as in years past.  Another market's vendor, maybe St Stephen's, is going to fill that space (typically there are several markets throughout city).  The gist of what I got from a Hungary paper translator is that there will be markets, maybe just not as big as in past.

I've been able to visit Europe a couple of times in early November, and I can vouch for the effort it takes to put up all the little shops and lights.  It seemed like wherever we would go, half the square is closed and the cranes/flatbeds/mobile fencing/temporary ice rinks are all going up.  I'm in Construction, so I love to watch the activity.  Always a bit of sadness, as you know you'll be missing it.  

Like our Prague precruise, after 3 nights we board the bus to Regensburg on Saturday 20 November.  The day the Prague markets open.  Oh well, we'll see many more.

It is the same along the Rhine really - and it tends to be that one or two degrees warmer on a lot of days. Snow in December is not a big deal. We may get an inch that stays on the ground for 24 hours. The Black Forest excursion may give you more snow if you are lucky. January tends to be colder with more snow than December.

I do not even own snow boots. Waterproof with a thick sole, something you can get from outdoor activities shops or a quality local retailer, should do it on muddy paths and wet cobblestones. Nothing too heavy, not mountain hiking shoes.

Perhaps someone from the US can share a brand or online retailer.

If you have a pair of walking shoes that can get wet (or you don't mind getting wet), a pair of waterproof sock could also be an option.  (And a lot cheaper than a new pair of waterproof shoes if they are not something you think you'll use a lot.)

Sometimes we pair them with a pair of rubber boots (for wet landings when using a Zodiac-type boat for tendering, for example.)  Or with a pair of lightweight, water-resistant (but not -proof) hiking shoes (not boots).  We've had ours since a cruise to Antartica in 2000, so I can attest they work, wash easily, and last.  Just another option for consideration, not a commercial recommendation.

I also have been debating the shoe/boot issue.  We have lightweight waterproof hiking boots which I have actually worn in lieu of snow boots when we have had light snow or just very rainy conditions.  You may want to try EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports).  They still have online shopping but many of their brick and mortar stores have closed.

• Cruise deposit and payments . Once your reservation form is received, a deposit of $400 is due, of which $200 is non-refundable. Air requires an additional $350 deposit for coach fares and $600 for business/first class. Final payments for your cruise will be paid approximately September 1, 2022. All payments must be made by credit card and are processed by the Fiber Garden on your behalf directly to AmaWaterways. You may request payments be made on the balance of your cruise at any time by emailing Deb at the Fiber Garden.
• Air. Please be advised it is HIGHLY recommended that you arrive one or more days prior to the cruise embarkation date of 12/8/22 to allow extra travel time in case of weather, etc. flight delays. Air booking opens approximately 11 months prior to the cruise. We are also recommending that you book air through AmaWaterways, as they will take very good care of you should flights booked through them be delayed or canceled. Hotel options will be available for the extra nights pre-cruise or you may choose to participate in AmaWaterways four-night pre-cruise extension with two nights in Lucerne and two nights in Zurich.
• Pre-cruise lodging . As indicated above, it is highly recommended that you arrive at least one day prior to the embarkation date of the cruise to provide extra time in case of flight delays. We will have hotel lodging available. Location and pricing will be published when available.
• Insurance . Travel insurance is highly recommended not only to protect your travel investment but to provide medical and accident coverage should you become ill or injured while traveling. The Fiber Garden works with two highly reputable travel insurance providers. After your reservation is received we will provide you with a complete written quote for your review. I usually recommend you estimate about 10-12% of the cruise fare for insurance costs. (Those over the age of 70 will likely be a bit higher and those 50 and under may be slightly lower. 10-12% is just to help you with budgeting for the cruise.)The decision to purchase insurance is up to you and the Fiber Garden assumes no liability if you choose to travel without insurance coverage.
• COVID protocols .  To ensure the safety of those traveling in our group and to meet likely travel requirements for the countries we will visit,  please be advised it is very possible you will be required to be fully vaccinated to participate in this cruise.  There will also likely be additional COVID travel requirements including possible testing and mask policies, etc. To participate in this tour, you must be willing to adhere to any COVID protocols in place at the time of our travel. The Fiber Garden will keep you updated on COVID-related requirements for travel.  The Fiber Garden reserves the right to refuse any reservation for their tours, including from individuals who have been non-compliant with health and safety protocols during previous tours.
• Before making a reservation for this trip, be sure you have thoroughly read all of the information and documents on this page! You are responsible for all information provided to you regarding this tour.

Imagine sailing down one of Europe's iconic rivers as picturesque villages, castles and landscapes pass you by, all while twinkling lights from nearby Christmas markets dance on the water. While this might sound like a fairytale, it can be a reality on a Christmas market river cruise.

From late November through December every year, most river cruise companies with Europe-based ships take excited passengers to idyllic towns to learn about Christmas traditions, shop at local Christmas markets and try tasty seasonal treats.

These river cruises only run seasonally while the markets are open, so they tend to book up quickly with passengers ranging from older adults to all types of families looking for a winter holiday filled with festive fun.

Here, we list the eight best Christmas markets river cruises to take in 2024, along with tips to get the most out of each sailing and highlights not to miss.

Best for short cruises: Riverside Luxury Cruises' Christmas on the Danube

If you're looking for a short sailing to tack onto the beginning or end of a trip, Riverside Luxury Cruises offers four-night Danube River sailings that start in Vienna, Austria, and end in Passau, Germany. The majority of the trip is spent in Austria, with port days in Vienna, Krems, Melk and Linz before a final day in Passau.

In Vienna, you can choose to visit one of the city's 100+ museums or visit the iconic Opera House before heading to the Christmas market for a glass of mulled wine and shopping. For those interested in wine, Krems is a must-see destination known for some of the best wines in the country. Before departing from Passau, be sure to explore the Christmas market as well as St. Stephen's Cathedral to see the impressive organ, which is the biggest cathedral organ in the world with almost 18,000 pipes.

Each ship in the Riverside Luxury Cruises fleet is all-suite and comes with butler service. Ships offer an indoor pool and a Jacuzzi to use before or after your trips ashore.

Best for Francophiles: CroisiEurope's Christmas in the Seine Valley

France is known for some of the most photogenic Christmas markets in Europe, and you have the chance to see some of them on a five-night Christmas in the Seine Valley river cruise with CroisiEurope Cruises. These shorter cruises are great if you'd like to spend a few days in Paris before stepping onto the cruise ship and sailing to three other beautiful towns.

The river cruise starts in Paris, where you can spend the day exploring the city, seeing the Christmas markets in Montmartre or Saint Germain or shopping for high-end gifts along the Champs-Élysées before the 5 p.m. all-aboard time.

Day two will bring you to Rouen, where you are invited to join Christmas Eve dinner and midnight mass. You'll also get to see more of Rouen on day four and take a guided tour. If you have free time, be sure to stop in at La Couronne, the oldest operating restaurant in France and the place that inspired Julia Child to start cooking.

Spend Christmas Day in Honfleur, one of the cutest cities on the voyage. Be sure to get the town's specialty, a steaming bowl of moules frites (mussels with fries), for Christmas lunch. After three days of touring smaller towns, you'll return to Paris, where the Eiffel Tower is visible from the banks of the Seine.

CroisiEurope's Christmas in the Seine Valley cruise departs Dec. 23, 2024. Fares start at $1,570 per person, based on double occupancy.

Included with the cost of the cruise are all of your meals and most drinks, free Wi-Fi, all onboard activities and port fees. Headsets are also included for excursions if you choose to go with the group for tours rather than venturing off on your own.

Best for families: Adventures by Disney's Rhine River Christmas Markets Cruise

Families looking to explore Christmas markets through Switzerland, France, Germany and The Netherlands will enjoy Adventures by Disney's Rhine River Cruise: Christmas Markets sailing. The eight-day cruise allows kids as young as 5 to join, though Disney's suggested age is 8 or older.

What really makes Adventures by Disney stand out is the Adventure Guides, Disney-trained leaders who are experts in each destination. Each Adventure Guide travels with the group throughout the cruise so your family really gets to know them, and they get to know you. This allows them to make personalized recommendations about activities and meals. As you walk through each town they share the history, culture and legends of the destination.

The weeklong trip starts in Basel, Switzerland. The next two days make Strasbourg, France the home port from which you can choose to visit Europa Park in Rust, Germany, or head to Colmar, France, which is famous for its Christmas Markets and Cheese Museum. You'll have most of the second day to enjoy Strasbourg.

Day four brings the group to Mannheim, Germany, where you can enjoy a funicular ride to Heidelberg Castle or tour the town of Baden-Baden where the Christmas market is not to be missed.

In Rüdesheim, you can choose to take part in a coffee and hot chocolate tasting, marvel at one of the largest mechanical music box collections in the world, enjoy a wine tasting or explore the city on your own. The evening is spent sailing through the Rhine Gorge as you pass 30 castles along the shore.

The last day in Germany is spent in Cologne, where you can visit the beautiful Christmas markets that dot the city landscape, as well as lace up some skates to glide around an open-air ice rink. The cruise ends in Amsterdam, where you can choose to visit the Rijksmuseum, the Rembrandt House Museum or the Van Gogh Museum, along with taking a scenic canal cruise through the city.

Adventures by Disney's Rhine River Cruise: Christmas Markets cruise departs Dec. 19, 2024. Fares start at $6,599 per adult and $5,899 per child under 11, based on double occupancy.

Fares for the once-a-year cruise include most meals, drinks at lunch and dinner (plus a nightly cocktail hour where a range of mixed drinks are complimentary), excursions in each port of call, porter service, transportation in port, Wi-Fi, gratuities for onboard staff and Adventure Guides, and onboard entertainment.

Best for couples: Viking's Danube Christmas Delights

Couples looking to get away for the holidays should consider Viking 's Danube Christmas Delights river cruise. The seven-night cruise takes passengers to four countries: Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. The trip combines opportunities to explore the ports of call with lectures and cultural performances onboard the ship.

In Budapest, you'll spend two days exploring the city at places like Castle Hill and the Grand Market Hall before shopping and dining at the Christmas market in front of St. Stephen's Basilica. Then in Bratislava, Slovakia, the group will attend an organ concert and shopping at the Old Town Christmas market.

In Vienna, Austria, the whole city comes alive with lights and a festive spirit. One thing not to miss here is the extra-charge excursion to a local winery, where you will celebrate the year's harvest and vintage.

Another highlight of the cruise is Krems, where the group will visit Göttweig Abbey and get exclusive access to the chapel in the inner courtyard to see the nativity scene. (The chapel is usually closed to visitors.) Finally, in Passau, you can watch an Advent wreath demonstration or take a flight to see the landmark Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park.

Viking offers Danube Christmas Delights river cruises from late November through mid-December in 2024 and 2025. Fares start at $2,799 per person, based on double occupancy.

Fares include shore excursions in every port; free Wi-Fi; all meals; beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner; port taxes and fees; and visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In select ports, passengers can sign up for optional excursions that are an added cost. These could be worth the upcharge, depending on the type of experience you want to have.

Best for old-world charm: Uniworld's Belgian Holiday Markets

Travelers looking to explore all of the Old World historic charm of Belgium will want to book Uniworld's Belgian Holiday Markets cruise. The seven-night cruise visits Belgium and the Netherlands, with port days in iconic cities like Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp.

The cruise is a closed loop, starting and ending in Brussels. On day one, take time to explore the city on your own after dropping your luggage off at the ship. Then on day two in the city, enjoy all the chocolate you can with a tour and chocolate tasting, plus a visit to the Christmas market. On day three, you'll need to decide whether to visit Ghent or Bruges, both of which have beautiful architecture and a Christmas market and offer opportunities to try local food.

The cruise continues into the Netherlands at Maastricht, where you can explore the city and its Christmas market, or head to Aachen, Germany, for festive fun. Alternatively, you can visit Valkenburg's underground Christmas market, located inside a cave. The last stop of the cruise is Antwerp, Belgium, where you can enjoy a concert, a beer tasting and time to enjoy the city at your leisure.

Uniworld offers its Belgian Holiday Markets cruise on four departure dates from late November through mid-December 2024 (and three December dates in 2025). Fares start from $3,799 per person, based on double occupancy.

The cruise fare includes premium spirits and wine, access to bikes and walking sticks, fitness classes, Wi-Fi, enrichment lectures, and shore excursions in each port. Onboard gratuities and group transfers to and from the airport are also included.

Best for solo travelers: Tauck's Yuletide Spirit

Solo travelers looking to enjoy a river cruise without the hassle of a single supplement should check out Tauck's Christmas market itineraries. On all European river cruises, including the seven-night Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise, the line waives the single supplement on Category 1 riverview cabins.

If your cruise starts in Amsterdam, you don't have to be on the ship until 4 p.m. so use the morning to walk around town or get tickets to tour the Anne Frank House. On your second day in Amsterdam, visit the Rijksmuseum and take an evening canal cruise with the group. Foodies will love it when the cruise heads to Gouda to explore the history of the city plus get a tasting of stroopwafels, which are cookie sandwiches invented in the city.

The midpoint of the cruise will bring you to the decision to visit either Ghent, which is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, or Bruges, known for its medieval architecture and beautiful canals. The cruise also visits Antwerp, where you can explore the various Christmas markets that are spread throughout the city. Your trip ends in Brussels, with a whole day to explore the cute squares and charming markets and try local fare.

Tauck offers four December departures of its Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise in 2024 and 2025, meaning the last cruise sets sail after Christmas. Fares start at $3,690 for solo travelers in a Category 1 room, but book soon as the single rooms are already selling out.

Solo travelers should know that these cabins don't have a balcony and are the smallest on the riverboat at 150 square feet, but you likely won't be spending much time in your room on this sailing. The cruise fare includes all gratuities, private shore excursions, meals, unlimited drinks including premium spirits, and basic Wi-Fi, plus airport and train transfers.

Best for an extended cruise: Avalon Waterways' Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine

Travelers looking for a longer cruise that sails deep into the southern part of Europe will want to consider the Avalon Waterways' Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine river cruise, which includes one night in Lucerne and three nights in Lake Como. There are also Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine itineraries that don't include the land-based post-cruise days if you want a shorter trip.

For the longer 12-night cruise and land-based trip, guests will embark the cruise ship in Amsterdam, where they can enjoy a day of free exploration before boarding the riverboat, followed by an Amsterdam canal cruise on day two. The cruise then departs for Germany, where you will be able to explore the Christmas markets in Cologne and Rüdensheim on days three and four. Day six brings the cruise to Strasbourg, France, where you can tour the La Petite France District and wander through the warm glow of the Christmas market. The cruise then heads back to Germany to visit the Black Forest, where you can learn about local traditions and German winemaking.

The final stop on the cruise is Basel, Switzerland, where you will disembark the ship to take a motor coach tour that starts in Mount Pilates, where you will ride 7,000 feet up the mountain in a gondola for incredible views. Your journey continues with a land-based post-cruise bus tour to Italy's Lake Como on days nine through 12. You can take a boat ride around the lake, explore the city on your own and marvel at the Duomo.
