royal caribbean cruise west coast

MIAMI, March 17, 2021* – After a decade-long hiatus, Royal Caribbean International will once again call Hollywood home starting in November 2021, casting Navigator of the Seas as a “series regular” that will sail from Los Angeles. The amplified ship will broaden the cruise line’s West Coast offerings, sailing 3-, 4- and 5-night itineraries to Catalina Island, California and Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – plus, select winter holiday 7-night sailings will feature overnights in the popular resort city. Royal Caribbean’s new year-round adventures from LA will open for sale the week of April 12, 2021.

“California was calling us home once again, and what better way to reintroduce Royal Caribbean than to bring our next-level cruise vacations to the City of Angels and make it a year-round adventure starting just in time for summer,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “We’re excited to return to Los Angeles to add bigger, bolder vacation options along the West Coast. With a ship like Navigator of the Seas , complete with waterslides, activities from day to night and a lineup of restaurants, bars and lounges, friends and families alike are in for a memorable getaway.”

After a $115 million amplification in 2019, Navigator brings star power that will thrill guests with its reimagined Caribbean poolscape anchored by the lively three-level bar The Lime & Coconut ; two daring waterslides that cantilever over the edges of the ship – The Blaster aqua coaster, the longest waterslide at sea, and Riptide, the industry’s only headfirst mat racer; the first standalone blow-dry bar at sea, To Dry For ; elevated nightlife and dining, and transformed spaces that each are dedicated to kids and teens. The winning combination of these thrilling features and activities alongside Royal Caribbean favorites – against the backdrop of Hollywood Hills – will make for a new short getaway, over the week or weekend, that makes the most of every minute for vacationers of all ages.

Installation has already begun, extending from the Goldbelt Tram Lower Terminal to the northern part of Franklin Street, with full connectivity expected in the coming weeks.

The Bay Islands of Honduras offer a very different world from that of mainland Honduras. Of the three islands, the largest, and most developed for tourism is Roatan. Roatan is a long island, measuring almost 40 miles in length and with a total landmass of 49 Square miles. The island has a mountainous backbone and is totally surrounded by coral reefs, offering superb diving as well as excellent fishing.

The tiny fishing village of Mahahual is located on Mexico's Southern Caribbean in the southern most part of the state of Quintana Roo. Known as the Mayan coast, in Spanish Costa Maya, the town of Mahahual is at the geographic center of the coast. The Costa Maya takes it's name from the many centuries over which the Mayan people have known of this fishing and diving paradise. Having slumbered for hundreds of years, the once sleepy fishing village of Mahahual, also spelled Majahual, no one knows which is correct, is now beginning to awaken to the attraction of eco-tourism. Located just south of the huge 1,500,000 acre Sian Ka'an wildlife preserve, Mahahual has recently been discovered by tourists from North America.

The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cuzamil, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have a number of unusual features and include certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.

Royal Caribbean to fix cruise infrastructure issue in Alaska — but it’s not what you think

Ashley Kosciolek

Ah, scenic Juneau, Alaska — where the allure of lush forests, cascading waterfalls and majestic glaciers draws as many as 16,000 cruise passengers a day. The downside? The constant influx of visitors is putting a strain on local infrastructure.

Royal Caribbean Group — which operates Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises — has partnered with Alaska Native corporation Goldbelt, Inc., to eliminate the problem of slow, unreliable Wi-Fi in port by bringing Starlink to several public areas and Juneau businesses.

royal caribbean cruise west coast

You might think connectivity isn't a big concern for people visiting the 49th state's remote, nature-forward capital, which can only be reached by air or sea, but it turns out that isn't the case. When the port is at maximum capacity, up to six ships can call there in a single day. With that many people in town, public Wi-Fi offered by local businesses is often difficult and frustrating to use for both visitors and locals.

"The number one complaint from this summer was a slow-down of internet speed during busy days downtown," McHugh Pierre, Goldbelt's president and CEO, said in a press release. "We are excited to collaborate with Royal Caribbean Group to explore a solution and add satellite internet capacity to town. This project will help locals and visitors have a better internet experience every day of the week."

Installation began the week of Aug. 26 at the Goldbelt Tram Lower Terminal and will continue north on Franklin Street. The pilot program's full range will be activated in the coming weeks. As each new hub becomes available, passengers, other visitors and locals will be able to connect for free and stay connected via one seamless network as they move about Juneau's downtown.

Royal Caribbean isn't new to Starlink, which was developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX company. In 2022, the Royal Caribbean family of brands was the first to commit to adding Starlink to its ships for faster connections at sea that allow everything from surfing the internet and checking email to video calling and streaming.

Cruise terminals where Royal Caribbean home ports its ships also provide connectivity for passengers, but this is the first time a cruise line has outfitted a large part of a downtown port area ashore with Wi-Fi.

"We are constantly striving to find innovative solutions to support our communities and enhance the travel experience for residents and cruise guests alike," Preston Carnahan, associate vice president of West Coast destinations for Royal Caribbean Group, said. "Our new pilot program aims to alleviate internet congestion and provide additional bandwidth for locals while providing internet connectivity for our guests from ship to shore."

The line's statement also stresses the need for user feedback to evaluate the program's effectiveness and determine whether similar initiatives will be rolled out in other ports.

For years, Juneau's borough officials have heard complaints that the influx of cruise passengers detracts from everyone's enjoyment of the city. On June 3, several major cruise lines — including Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Cruise Line and others that are members of the Cruise Lines International Association — agreed to limit the total number of ships per day to five and the total number of passengers to 16,000 Sunday through Friday and 12,000 on Saturdays.

Royal Caribbean is Bringing Starlink Internet to Juneau Cruise Port

Picture of Andrea Santillan

Network congestion is becoming a problem in downtown Juneau as the number of cruise ship passengers increases.

juneau alaska street

To combat this growing issue, the Royal Caribbean Group (RCL) and Alaska Native Corporation Goldbelt announced they are working together to make Starlink available in the Alaskan capital.

Goldbelt President and CEO McHugh Pierre noted, “The number one complaint from this summer was a slow-down of internet speed during busy days downtown.”

Royal Caribbean ‘s Associate Vice President, West Coast Destination Preston Carnahan explained how their collaboration with Goldbelt addresses the problem.

Installation work already began last week encompassing the Goldbelt Tram Lower Terminal up to Franklin Street’s northern region. Residents and passengers will experience its full range in the next few weeks.

Users can gain access to the satellite-powered internet by logging onto the networks of participating businesses in the downtown area.

Other Initiatives Underway

Aerial view of Juneau with various buildings nestled against a forested hillside. The town sits near a body of water with mountains visible in the background, under the expansive sky where Starlink satellites orbit above.

RCG and Goldbelt aren’t the only ones working on improving local internet access.

Last week, Alaska-based telecommunications corporation GCI shared that it was  rolling out network capacity upgrades .

Meanwhile, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is investing $1 million from marine passenger fees to make free Wi-Fi available in Juneau’s commercial district.

AT&T also revealed last May that it intends to spend almost $250 million on local network infrastructure from 2019 to 2023. Alaska Communications likewise said that it will provide wireless services through fixed infrastructure by the end of 2024.

Among these, the Starlink network will be the first to become available.

freedom of the seas spacex starlink internet

The SpaceX technology is already widely used onboard the vessels of major cruise lines, including MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Holland America Line. Royal Caribbean was one of the first cruise operators to install Starlink when it announced its plans for fleetwide deployment in 2022 .

From April to October last year, Juneau recorded a 74% increase in visitors compared to the previous decade. To help manage incoming crowds, the city established  cruise ship passenger limits  for 2026 .

It’s a long drive, but it’ll give you the chance to see the changing geography of the American west – watch on as the desert gives way to the peaks of the southern Sierras. Settle into your accommodation near Sequoia National Park in the afternoon, and then head out for an included dinner at a local restaurant with your group.

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

Today is simply about seeing the best of the USA’s Sequoia National Park. After breakfast, you’ll embark on leader-led walks around Sequoia, driving from stop to stop as you get to feel small next to the staggering size of General Sherman, the Giant Forest and other specimens of Sequoia’s towering timber. Your leader will also teach you about the ecologically diverse landscape along the way. After sunset, you’ll join a Naturalist from the Yosemite Conservancy for a guided stargazing program. The park’s minimal light pollution makes it an excellent place to see the stars while learning about astronomy, constellations and local lore.

  • Yosemite National Park - Stargazing with Yosemite Conservancy Naturalist
  • Yosemite National Park - Entrance Fee
  • Yosemite National Park - Leader-led hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Today, Yosemite is all yours to explore! In the morning there’ll be leader-led walks around some of the park’s best trails. If it’s a clear day you may also drive up to Glacier Point for a view you won’t soon forget, looking down over the valley and across to the iconic Half Dome. The afternoon is yours to fill how you’d like. You might choose to hike along the breathtaking Mist Trail with its many fabulous views, hire a bicycle and pedal along some of the 12 miles of designated (and flat) path or immerse yourself in the park’s history at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Once you’ve seen the sights, the day will be capped off with a pizza picnic in the park for dinner.

  • Yosemite - Pizza Picnic Dinner
  • Yosemite National Park - Yosemite Valley & Glacier Point

The road to Glacier Point can sometimes be closed due to snow in May and June. If that happens, we will explore other areas of the park.

After saying fond farewells to Yosemite, you’ll head west to vibrant San Francisco. Stop to do a walk over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and then check in to your hotel for the night. At sunset, you can hit the water for an optional catamaran cruise around the bay, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. If you like, head out with your fellow travellers for dinner.

  • San Francisco - Golden Gate Bridge walk
  • San Francisco - Sunset catamaran cruise - USD45

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

Today you are free to explore all that San Francisco has to offer. The City by the Bay boasts a beautiful setting and a vibrant, multicultural heart. Maybe check out the vintage stores along funky Haight Street, catch the tram down to the waterfront or take a boat trip out to Alcatraz Island. There will be a meeting at 6 pm tonight to welcome any new travellers to the trip. Afterward, why not head out for an optional group dinner to get to know your new companions.

As this is a combination trip, the travellers in your group and your group leader are likely to change today. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary so please attend, and this is also a great chance to meet the new group. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If you'd like to visit Alcatraz, you'll need to make your own arrangements to visit the island prison. Tickets must be booked in advance, as they're limited and sell out quickly. You can make your own Alcatraz reservations online at alcatrazcruises.com or call +1 415 981 7625 between the hours of 8 am and 7 pm, Pacific Standard Time (USA).

Today will be a road trip day, so grab a window seat if you can and get your favourite playlist or a good book ready – it's a bit of a long drive up the coast, but you'll have plenty of stops along the way to appreciate the coastal views. You’ll also stop in at the Avenue of the Giants for your first taste of redwood trees. This famed road is known as the most scenic drive through the redwoods and is lined by huge titans, one of which you can even drive through! Continue to Crescent City, check into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening. Your leader will be able to point you in the right direction for a dinner spot.

  • Redway - Avenue of the Giants

Your travel time today will be approximately 7.5 hours.

Today is all about exploring Redwood National Park – known for these towering giants, the park is also home to oak woodlands, a rugged coastline and a condor restoration program. Maybe discover the ancient trees among a forest of ferns, head to natural lakes and springs or explore Trillium Falls. Return to Crescent City in the evening, then head out for a group dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Redwood National Park

Cross into Oregon this morning and head to Crater Lake National Park – formed when an eruption triggered the collapse of a tall mountain peak 7700 years ago. It’s now home to the deepest lake in the USA, a scenic wonder fed by rain and snow that has attracted artists, photographers and sightseers worldwide. Explore the Rim Drive viewpoints with your group and stop for a couple of walks for the best views and overlooks of one of the most pristine lakes on Earth. Spend the night at a nearby motel, where you’re free for dinner.

  • Motel (1 night)
  • Crater Lake National Park - Entrance Fee

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Snow can be expected at Crater Lake National Park around May, June and September – which is an opportunity to see the park in a way lots of visitors never do!

This morning, you’ll explore Oregon’s wine country in the Willamette Valley – this is a popular wine region in the US that boasts numerous accolades for its beauty, Pinot Noir and quality wineries. Visit one of these local wineries for a tasting and enjoy a picnic lunch with your group with a view of rolling hills, towering trees and sprawling vineyards. Then, you’ll continue to Portland, Oregon’s largest city, where your leader will take you on an orientation walk to get your bearings. You’re free for dinner, so maybe keep the party going and head to a local bar in the shadow of Mount Hood. This city hosts a thriving arts scene, so there are plenty of trendy spots to eat and hit the nightlife – just ask your leader for recommendations.

  • Willamette Valley - wine tasting and vineyard visit
  • Portland - leader led walking tour

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

This morning, you’ll visit the nearby Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, known for the spectacular river canyon and gorgeous views of cliffs, spires and ridges set against the peaks of Cascade Mountain Range. Explore the park and the famous Multnomah Falls – the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest and approximately 189 m (620 ft) tall. Walk along the scenic bridge that sits almost in the middle of the falls and feel the water on your face as the cascades fall below. Spend your afternoon exploring, and then spend another night in Portland.

When you arrive, you’ll visit Kalaloch Beach – one of the beautiful Pacific Northwest beaches with giant trees washed up on the shore, scattered across the sand. Maybe head to the Tree of Life (or the Tree Root Cave). Tonight sit down for an included group dinner at your lodge.

  • Lodge (1 night)
  • Kalaloch Beach Walk

This morning, visit the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park – an enchanting canopy of moss and ferns that might remind you of an anime or fairy film. Take a walk with your leader, appreciating a moment of peace in this temperate rainforest, before continuing to Seattle. When you arrive in the seaport city, your leader will take you on an orientation walk, pointing out the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and maybe some popular spots for live grunge music, which the city is known for.
