Home to several endangered species, Safari Park is spread over 148 acres of land. The vast green landscape holds various wild animals kept in large enclosures so that visitors can view them in their natural habitat. This wildlife sanctuary is not situated in the outskirts of the city as normally is the case. Safari Park in Karachi is located in the bustling neighbourhood of Gulshan-e-Iqbal and is in close proximity to Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Residents of these localities usually prefer spending their weekends in the serene and peaceful environment of Safari Park. Let us walk you through the various facilities offered by one of the most beautiful natural parks in Karachi.

Let us discuss the facilities offered by Safari Park in Karachi in more detail.

It is a rare experience to view wildlife in their natural setting. For children and students this is a great learning opportunity. There are about 600 species of animals and birds kept in large enclosures so that the animals do not feel confined otherwise kept in a small cage. The animals freely roam inside the enclosure.

Visitors can take a bus ride to view ostriches and deer running at free will. The thrilling jolt of discovery at spotting a zebra or a giraffe in the wilderness is what defines the safari experience at Safari Park in Karachi.

Apart from the exciting safari experience, kids can also enjoy various rides at the amusement park. You can purchase a ride by entering some tokens. Go Aish Theme Park, which is temporarily closed at the moment, is also one of the highlights of the park. It has rope climbing, zip line, quad biking and a mini golf course. It was a major attraction before the authorities decided to close it down for some renovations. It is expected that Go Aish Theme Park will open up soon.

Nothing can beat the pleasure of viewing white swans wading their way through the lake water at Safari Park in Karachi. Children and adults gather around Swan Lake and feed the white birds with some popcorn and bread. Watching the mother duck leading the pack of ducklings and the swans calmly paddling their way across the lake to catch a few pieces of bread is a relaxing experience. The sounds of nature and greenery add to the serenity.

Kashmir Point

If you want to experience viewing the beautiful valleys of Kashmir in Karachi, then you must visit the newly built Kashmir Point in Safari Park. It is built over a 4-acre area, where water cascades down a 210 feet high mountainous slope. The views are breathtaking, to say the least. Kashmir Point is an ideal picnic spot. It was recently inaugurated by the Mayor of Karachi.

Live safari trains are not available before 2 PM. However, you can pay PKR 600 for a 30 seater bus, irrespective of the passenger count, and avail the safari experience via train after 10 AM in the morning. If you can wait a bit, then all you need to do is pay only PKR 30 and go on a safari tour. During the live safari tour, you can go only up to Gate no. 2 and Gate no. 3 is closed.

The best entertaining feature is the elephant enclave in which you can pay the trainer PKR 50 and go inside the enclave and take pictures with the elephant. Children enjoy the experience and remember it for a lifetime.

Future Projects for Safari Park in Karachi

Renovations and upgrades are underway for one of the largest family parks in Karachi. It is expected that a large aviary will be constructed inside the park, where rare species of birds will be imported and kept. Boating will also be introduced in the Swan Lake. A camping site is being developed, which will cover around 300 acres of land. A one-of-its-kind museum will be set up comprising endangered birds and details of those bird species that are now extinct.

Ticket Prices of Safari Park in Karachi

The entrance ticket price of Safari Park is quite minimal. You can enter the premises by paying a meagre amount of PKR 30 per head, which includes adults and children both. Lone zoo elephant still awaits reunion with sisters in karachi’s safari park.

safari park karachi elephant

KARACHI: Elephant Madhubala continues to live in solitary confinement at the Karachi zoo despite several official promises made over the last year for her reunion with her sisters housed at the Safari Park.

Sources said the poor elephant was left alone following the tragic death of her longtime partner, Noor Jehan, in April last year. Since then, they said, plans were announced several times for her relocation but none could be materialised, mainly due to lack of interest on part of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which is running the facilities for captive animals in the city.

Information gathered from sources indicated that there was no possibility for the pachyderm finding immediate relief from her solitary confinement and getting united with her sisters as construction for expansion and improvement of the elephant area at the Safari Park had not begun yet.

Last year, the 18-year-old African elephant underwent treatment for life-threatening blood parasitic infections that had earlier affected Noor Jehan. Both elephants had undergone surgeries for their damaged and infected tusks in 2022.

Madhubala lives in solitary confinement in Karachi Zoo following death of longtime companion Noor Jehan in April 2023

Replying to concerns about Madhubala’s health, senior zoo official Abida Raees said that she was healthy and fit for relocation and that the zoo administration was in constant contact with experts representing the Four Paws (FP), an international non-profit organisation assisting the local authorities on elephant care for the past several years.

“FP experts completed Madhubala’s crate training in December last year and they would decide the time for her relocation. There is no delay on our part,” Ms Raees said, adding that the zoo staff was following experts’ instructions.

Relocation pending since 2021

It might be recalled that the relocation of a pair of zoo elephants to the Safari Park was first recommended in December 2021 by FP in its report submitted to the Sindh High Court. The court was approached by the Pakistan Animal Welfare Society (Paws) activists concerned over animals’ plight.

The experts made the recommendation on the ground that the Safari Park was closer to the species’ appropriate environment and housed two more elephants of the same family — Sonia and Malika. The four female elephants were captured from the wild in Tanzania and brought to Karachi in 2009. Two of them were housed in the zoo and the other two at the Safari Park.

Their reunion, experts believed, would have a great positive impact on their physical and psychological well-being.

Sources regretted that KMC running the facilities for captive animals in the city didn’t pay heed to the experts’ advice on elephants’ relocation. The suggestion, however, gathered steam last year when Noor Jehan, the other zoo elephant, met a painful death.

The 17-year-old ailing African elephant had initially undergone emergency treatment for health complications but later ‘fell’ in her pond. She passed away on April 22, 2023 leaving her longtime partner Madhubala, alone.

‘Efforts on for relocation’

Asked about the reasons for delay in Madhubala’s relocation to the Safari Park, Katharina Braun representing FP International’s department for public relations explained in an email that the plan was very much a priority of the organisation and its teams were working tirelessly at the moment to make it happen as soon as possible.

“However, many factors contribute to the actual relocation: All agreements and needed papers need to be ready and signed — some of which were only signed recently in 2024. The agreement with KMC was finalised in February 2024,” she stated.

Moreover, she pointed out, all required and recommended improvement of the keeping conditions at the Safari Park must be finished before Madhubala could be relocated.

“The recent elections in Pakistan also had to be considered, as we are always respecting locally relevant events that might impact our schedule and timings,” she said.

About the progress achieved so far, Ms Braun stated that Dr Amir Khalil and his team recently met engineers and architects in Karachi to finalise the design and structural drawings for the improvement of Safari Park.

“The plans include increasing the land for the elephants to 5.2 acres. There will be a bigger pool and mud bath and enrichment for all three elephants. There will also be an elephant-proof fence and safety measures will be taken to make sure both the Mahouts and elephants are protected and their contact will be protected as well,” she added.

Ms Braun hoped that construction on the project would start after Eid.

“The project is definitely not on hold – ever since the agreement with KMC was signed. However, preparations with metal work and other elements of the design for the construction and the actual construction work would take some time. Once construction begins, we estimate that it [the required improvements at the park] will take one to two months to complete.”

It might be mentioned here that FP is solely responsible for infrastructure development/upgradation of the elephant area at the Safari Park under its agreement with the KMC.

FOUR PAWS: “There is hope for the Karachi elephants, if improvements are made”

FOUR PAWS: “There is hope for the Karachi elephants, if improvements are made”

Wildlife experts recommend urgent tusk surgery for elephant Noor Jehan

Karachi, 30 November 2021 – Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS has completed its two-day assessment on the wellbeing of four African elephants in Karachi Zoo and Karachi Safari Park in Pakistan upon the request of the Sindh High Court. On 30 November, the FOUR PAWS team presented their findings to the High Court.

For the vets and wildlife experts, the priority is the immediate medical care of all four elephants. One of the elephants, Noor Jehan, needs major surgery for a painful infection of her broken tusk urgently. Furthermore, all four elephants should be reunited at Karachi Safari Park, proper diet and enrichment must be provided, and the staff needs to receive proper training.

The female elephants – one of which was believed to be male up until the assessment – came to Pakistan together in 2009 and were separated after their arrival. They are the last captive elephants in the country.

After the examinations at Karachi Zoo and Karachi Safari Park, the FOUR PAWS expert team, including Dr Amir Khalil and Dr Marina Ivanova from FOUR PAWS as well as Dr Frank Göritz and Prof Thomas Hildebrandt from the Leibnitz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW), concludes that the most urgent step now is the medical treatment of the elephants.

“Noor Jehan and Madhubala at Karachi Zoo have broken tusks and Malika and Sonu at Karachi Safari Park have problems with their nails and feet. They all need urgent medical treatment, but Noor Jehan has a painful infection in her broken tusk that she might have had for years. This requires a complicated surgery done by experts as soon as possible and is essential for her wellbeing. If our recommendations are implemented, the elephants can recover from these health issues.”

Four paws veterinarian dr khalil.

All four elephants also express behavioural problems which come from years of inappropriate keeping and frustration over not being able to live out their natural instincts. The team also discovered that elephant Sonu, who was believed to be male for over ten years, is actually female.

Improvement of keeping conditions and proper care as long-term solutions

The experts recommend that a long-term solution to improve the elephants’ lives is a reunion of all four at Karachi Safari Park. However, although the park provides enough space and natural surroundings, it has been neglected and needs major improvements.

“The elephants need sand and water to engage with and take mud baths. Instead of being fed with hundreds of kilos of sugarcane, the elephants need a healthy, balanced diet. It is also extremely important that they receive proper foot care. The keeping conditions must meet the species-specific needs and in order to properly care for the elephants, the staff must be properly trained as well. We hope the High Court will consider our recommendations and initiate that the elephants receive the care they so urgently need,” says Dr Khalil. FOUR PAWS will continue to support the Pakistani authorities with its expertise and assistance if required.

Pakistan recently banned elephant imports

After the rescue of the former ‘loneliest elephant in the world’, Kaavan, in November 2020, by FOUR PAWS and pop icon Cher, followed an important decision with regard to animal welfare in Pakistan: In September 2021, the Islamabad High Court announced a ban on the import of new elephants into the country. FOUR PAWS had previously advised the Ministry of Climate Change to not allow any new elephants coming to Pakistan.

The African elephants FOUR PAWS examined were caught in the wild by a Pakistani animal trader at a very young age in Tanzania and arrived in Pakistan in 2009. Noor Jehan and Madhubala were moved to Karachi Zoo while Malika and Sonu were brought to Karachi Safari Park. According to official information, they are the last four African elephants in captivity in Pakistan.

The lone elephant of the Karachi Zoo, Madhubala, will be moving to Safari Park early next month.

safari park karachi elephant

The management of Karachi Zoo declared on Thursday that Madhubala, a 16-year-old elephant kept in isolation there, would be moving to Safari Park the following month.

After everything has been resolved, Madhubala will be moved to Safari Park to live with Sonia and Malika, two other elephants.

The administration of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) declared that Four Paws is working with them to construct a new sanctuary, and that training for Madhubala’s entrance and exit from the container has been finished.

The sanctuary, which is anticipated to be finished in 15 to 20 days, will give Madhubala a new place to live after she spent years experiencing dental pain and infection as a result of a fractured tusk.

Madhubala is one of four African elephants that Four Paws’ eight-person crew will be tending to in 2022. There will now be three elephants in Safari Park as a result of the relocation.

Remarkably, Four Paws became well-known worldwide in 2020 after moving Kaavan—often referred to as the world’s most lonely elephant—from Islamabad to Cambodia.

New enclosures: Safari Park makes room for elephants

Elephants are the only ‘big’ animals at Safari Park.

an elephant is bathed at the karachi zoo on thursday photo ppi

The article mentions the Safari is largest in South East Asia..... But Pakistan is NOT in South East Asia, but SOUTH ASIA. I have heard this wrong geographical term for Pakistan expressed by so many people in Pakistan, I am guessing they are taught the geographic location of Pakistan incorrectly. Pakistan is in South Asia. South East Asia consists of countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam. Please make this correction. Thank you.

The outdated concept of a zoo consisting of animals in cages is outlawed in most developed countries and the rest of the world should follow. It's cruel, inhumane and takes a toll on the animal's health and lifespan - and our public's tendency for misbehavior (children throwing food and sticks into the enclosures) doesn't help.

Instead of keeping animals in enclosures, 'Safari' Park should prove its name true and keep the animals open in a large open natural environment with guarded borders where humans tour the facility in buses or caged trucks. That's how a lot of zoos and safari parks in the developed world operate (I've been to one in Canada). Karachi Zoo should also adopt this format. It will be better for the animals' health and generate more profit since people prefer watching animals roam freely in natural environments.

The fate of a teenage zoo elephant in pakistan was tragic — and a symbol of much more.

While ailing, African elephant Noor Jehan rested on a sand pile at a zoo in Karachi, Pakistan. The photo was taken on April 14. The elephant died 8 days later.

KARACHI – Noor Jehan, the African bush elephant, should have been in her prime. She was just a teenager, about 17. But a mysterious incident left her painfully dragging about on her two front legs. The zoo neglected to help her until animal rights activists raised the alarm on social media. Then, in mid-April, she fell into a concrete pool in her dusty enclosure. She had to be winched out with a crane and could no longer stand independently. Zookeepers laid Noor Jehan on a mound of sand beneath the only tree in her enclosure.

"We are all absolutely heartbroken," said Mahera Omar , cofounder of the Pakistan Animal Welfare Society , which dispatched volunteers and local vets to bolster Noor Jehan's care, overseen by the Austrian-based animal charity, Four Paws International . "We are trying to do our best to keep her comfortable." Volunteer Jude Allen urged the elephant to eat stalks of sugar cane. "Good girl," he crooned, "You can do it."

In mid-April, she fell into her concrete pool — she had to be winched out with a crane.

Noor Jehan's tragedy captivated Pakistan, with journalists delivering rapid-fire updates. In her enclosure – roughly the size of four tennis courts, a section was lopped off with rope to accommodate the some dozen television news cameras that trained on her for days.

And for some, the elephant's plight became something more. "Noor Jehan has become a symbol for the state of our own country" says Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a conservationist with an outsize profile as the grandson and nephew of two of Pakistan's most beloved prime ministers. He was volunteering to bathe and feed Noor Jehan on a recent day. "She has been caged, starved, abused, exploited. And this is the state of Pakistan."

Despite the last-ditch efforts to save her, the elephant died on April 22.

Noor Jehan the elephant is only 17. A mysterious accident left her dragging herself about on her two front legs until animal rights activists raised the alarm on social media.

Poached from the wild, popular in Pakistan

Noor Jehan was always big news.

When she first arrived at the zoo as a plump toddler, nearly 15 years ago, Pakistanis flocked to see her. To add to her allure, zoo officials named her after the beloved Pakistani diva Noor Jehan .

But activists say her life has been anything but glamorous. She arrived to Karachi after a Pakistani poacher captured her from her herd in Tanzania, along with three other baby elephants. Her new home was an enclosure at the crumbling Karachi Zoo, near a busy road.

Elephants live in matriarchal herds, and in the wild, female elephants stay close to their mothers their whole lives . But Noor Jehan's only company has been a fellow captive female elephant, Madhubala.

Omar, of the Pakistan Animal Welfare Society, gestured to the concrete shed where the two used to sleep. For years, they were shackled while they slept – it's unclear why, Omar said. "I don't know how one can sleep if you know your three legs are chained – two in the front, one in the back."

It's not just the elephants that suffer at the zoo. On a recent spring day, boys chipped off cobblestones to hurl at a crocodile huddled in a concrete pool. Others threw chips and chocolate at baboons in a tiny enclosure, gleefully watching them gobble them up. A gorilla sat quietly in another cage, entirely alone.

The zoo's current director, Kanwar Ayub , told NPR he couldn't comment on Noor Jehan's neglect, her living conditions or even that of other zoo animals, as he had only been appointed to manage the institution in early April. Since then, he told NPR, he was dealing with Noor Jehan's decline. Local media reported he was appointed in the wake of the previous director 's dismissal for negligence after several zoo animals died and Noor Jehan's mysterious injuries went untreated.

A discussion of animal — and human — neglect

As the details of Noor Jehan's neglect came to air, the revelations sparked an online conversation about the widespread neglect and abuse of animals in Pakistan.

"I regret to say this, but I think Noor Jehan can only find peace when she dies," said Pakistani singer Natasha Baig in an Instagram story republished in the Pakistani daily, The Express Tribune . "Pakistan is truly incapable of showing mercy to animals," she continued. "Noor Jehan's story also raises the question of whether countries like Pakistan are even capable of operating zoos ," wrote local publication, Global Village Space .

Activists hope the conversation will continue, because they say, the situation is dire for Pakistan's animals.

"What I have seen in Pakistan as far as animal abuse goes, I have never seen in any other country," says Ayesha Chundrigar , founder of the Pakistani charity, ACF Animal Rescue , which rescues about 20 animals a day, ranging from tortured stray cats and dogs, a donkey forced to swallow acid and a monkey whose arm flesh was burnt off, leaving only a bone.

Donkeys wait to be seen by staff of a donkey medical clinic in the scraggly neighborhood of Korangi in the port city of Karachi. The donkeys cart heavy loads like scrap metal across the city. Their masters are some of Pakistan's poorest laborers, and so this clinic, run by the Pakistani charity ACF Animal Rescue, is often the only opportunity for them to get their donkeys checked.

Chundrigar spoke to NPR on a recent day in the working-class district of Korangi, where she was overseeing a medical camp for donkeys who cart heavy loads, like scrap metal across the city. It is the only welfare check available for Pakistan's thousands of work donkeys. "There's this notion that violence toward vulnerable living beings in Pakistan is considered to be" — the former psychotherapist fished for the word — "asserting dominance."

Others have made a connection between animal abuse and the broader plight of Pakistan's downtrodden. "Time and time again this country fails the vulnerable," wrote Alia Chughtai , a journalist and social commentator in Karachi, on Twitter. "You could be a woman, child or animal. No one cares enough. But please carry on fighting on TV shows," she tweeted, referring to political deadlock in Pakistan which has unraveled the economy and pushed food prices into hyper-inflationary territory , sending millions into hunger .

Chughtai is not the only one who has been reflecting on the parallels.

Back in Noor Jehan's enclosure, the conservationist, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, tells NPR that he can't stop thinking about an incident in March where hundreds of people, just a few miles from the Karachi Zoo, rushed into a factory complex where managers were distributing free food. As they jostled, 16 women and children were killed in a stampede. "The animals in this zoo are part of this system. It's an interconnected system," he says. "I think as a nation, we need to understand that if animals are not living a dignified life, it translates into also how we see other human beings."

Days after I visited Noor Jehan, on April 22, she developed a raging fever and died .

Noor Jehan was poached from her herd in Tanzania, alongside three other baby elephants. And since her capture, Noor Jehan has lived in an enclosure near a busy road, her only company, a fellow captive elephant, Madhubala.

Her demise has put pressure on zoo officials, who promised to speedily shift her enclosure mate, the elephant Madhubala , to the nearby Karachi Safari Park , where she will have more space to roam. The provincial government ordered an investigation into zoo conditions.

Calls for kindness toward animals

There have been other recent measures to reform animal welfare.

Last June, Pakistan's federal government banned live animal testing in the capital Islamabad, and included animal rights in the school curriculum, said Salman Sufi, the head of the strategic reforms unit at the prime minister's office.

"I am a strong believer of having no zoos at all," said Sufi, a prominent progressive. But he said it needed to be an incremental process.

International attention has helped move things along in the past – like when the entertainer Cher advocated for the release of a lonely elephant who lived in the Islamabad Zoo. A local lawyer took up the case on behalf of the international welfare group Four Paws. In the end, the Islamabad High Court ordered the elephant, Kaarvan, to be shifted to a sanctuary — and the zoo to shutter.

Sufi said international attention on Pakistan following Noor Jehan's plight certainly added pressure. "But mostly, this is being down for our own conscience," Sufi said. "If our generation has not done what it should have, at least our future generation can be kinder toward animals than we were."

  • Madhubala has been in solitary confinement since April 2023 when her companion, elephant Noor Jehan, died
  • International animal rights organization warns solitary confinement has taken a toll on Madhubala’s mental health

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani elephant Madhubala, who has been in solitary confinement at Karachi Zoo since last year, will be shifted to Karachi’s Safari Park in May where she will be in the company of two other elephants, state-run media Associated Press of Pakistan reported on Thursday.

Madhubala, one of only three captive elephants alive in Pakistan, was brought to the South Asian country with three other elephants from Tanzania in 2009. However, has been in solitary confinement at Karachi Zoo since April 2023 after her companion, elephant Noor Jehan passed away from illness.

International animal rights organization FOUR PAWS, which has been involved in efforts to have Madhubala relocated to Karachi Safari Park, said last week the solitary confinement has taken a strong toll on her mental condition, with boredom being her biggest stressor.

Animal rights activists have long campaigned against the plight of animals in Pakistan, especially elephants, and demanded they be shifted to “species-appropriate” locations such as the Safari Park.

“According to Zoo administration, the arrangements for the transfer have been completed,” APP said. “Madhubala will join two other elephants, Sonia and Malika after relocation to Safari Park.”

A FOUR PAWS spokesperson said the organization was thrilled to see Madhubala finally getting the treatment she deserves.

“Her story is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of animal welfare,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by APP.

FOUR PAWS says the elephant enclosures at Safari Park would have water elements for bathing, skincare and thermoregulation. Enrichments such as hay nets, varying substrates like soil, sand, clay, and sawdust will be provided for Madhubala to dust bathe while the area is secured by elephant-proof fencing.

Madhubala will be carried from the Karachi Zoo to the Safari Park in a huge transport crate. The elephant is currently being trained to enter and exit the crate by herself and sit inside it.

  • US beats Pakistan in Super Over after match initially ended in tie
  • Skipper Monank Patel leads from the front with fighting half-century

ISLAMABAD: The United States handed Pakistan a shock defeat by five runs on Thursday, beating Babar Azam’s side by five runs after a thrilling contest that went into the Super Over in Dallas.

Pakistan were sent in to bat first after the US won the toss and elected to field against the 2009 T20 world champions. Pakistan’s upper order failed them once again, with opener Muhammad Rizwan, Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman departing for 9, 3 and 11 runs respectively.

Skipper Babar Azam scored 44 runs from 43 balls while all-rounder Shadab Khan made 40 from 25 balls. Pinch-hitter Azam Khan went for a golden duck, while pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi scored an unbeaten 23 runs from 16 balls to ensure Pakistan finished at 159/7 from 20 overs.

However, Pakistani bowlers were unable to defend the target, with the match ending in a tie that ultimately went to a Super Over. In T20 cricket, each team bats for an additional over when the match ends in a tie.

“HISTORY MADE,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) wrote on social media platform Instagram. “Stunning scenes in Dallas as USA pull off a remarkable Super Over win over against Pakistan.”

Nosthush Kenjige was the pick of the American bowlers, returning figures of 3/30 while Saurabh Netravalkar pitched in with 2/18 to keep the Pakistani batters at bay.

In response, US captain Monank Patel led from the front, scoring 50 runs from 38 balls. Pakistani pacers Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf returned figures of 1/25, 1/26 and 1/37 from their four overs. Afridi remained wicketless, returning figures of 0/33 as the US finished at 159/3 from 20 overs.

Sent in to bat first, the US managed to score 18 runs courtesy of a boundary, some fielding mishaps from Pakistan and three wide deliveries from Amir.

Pakistan sent in batters Zaman and Iftikhar Ahmed to chase the 19-run target from six balls. However, they lost the Super Over after finishing five runs short of the target at 13/1.

With the latest win, the US move to the top of the table with four points from two matches. India are second-placed in the table while Pakistan, Canada and Ireland are yet to open their account in the World Cup.

  • Saudi football striker Firas Tariq Nasser Al-Buraikan scores twice to hand Pakistan defeat
  • Pakistan will now face Tajikistan in Dushanbe in last away match of World Cup qualifying round

ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia beat Pakistan 3-0 at the Jinnah Football Stadium in Islamabad on Thursday, as the two sides locked horns in the second round of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches of Group G.

Saudi Arabia’s Firas Tariq Nasser Al-Buraikan dealt Pakistan an early blow in the 26th minute, netting the first goal of the match. Fifteen minutes later, the Saudi footballer netted another one, giving the visitors a 2-0 edge over the hosts.

Pakistan attempted to regroup and mount a comeback in the second half with a couple of attacks. However, their efforts were thwarted when Saudi Arabia’s Musab Fahd Al-Juwayr netted the third goal of the match in the 51st minute of the match.

“Our last home game of the FIFA WCQ ends in defeat,” the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) wrote on social media platform X.

Pakistan are bottom-placed at Group G of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The South Asian team lost to Saudi football team 4-0 in the first leg of the qualifying matches when they faced off in Al Ahsa.

The green shirts will face Tajikistan on June 11 in Dushanbe in what will be their final round 2 away fixture.

Apart from Saudi Arabia, the other two teams with Pakistan in Group G are Jordan and Tajikistan. In the second round of the qualifiers, a total of 36 football squads have been split into nine groups with four teams each. The winners and runners-up from each group would go through to the third round.

Pakistan were already out of the race to qualify for the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches after losing four matches on the trot.

safari park karachi elephant

  • Burney was arrested in Karachi on Wednesday after his return to country from United States
  • Burney, associates accused of smuggling and illegally three children to the United States

KARACHI: A local court in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Thursday granted a two-day physical remand of rights activist Sarim Burney to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), a day after he was arrested on charges of human trafficking and illegally sending children to the United States.

Burney, a prominent rights activist in Pakistan, was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Khaleeque Zaman in Karachi a day after he was arrested on his return to Pakistan from the US. According to the FIA, Burney had been arrested over human trafficking charges levelled against him by US authorities.

The Anti-Human Trafficking cell of the FIA had registered a case against Burney under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 109 (abetment) of the Pakistan Penal Code with Sections 3 (trafficking in persons), 4 (aggravating circumstances) and Section 5 (abetment and criminal conspiracy) of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2018.

The social worker was arrested on charges of human trafficking which includes smuggling and illegally sending children to the US after American authorities filed a complaint against him, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

“Sarim Burney and his associates Basalat Ali Khan, Humaira Naz and others, in collusion with each other knowingly and willfully gave false information, made misdeclaration as well as concealment of the facts before the Hon’ble Family Courts District East Karachi in the garb of illegal adoption and guardianship of three baby girls by using and providing fraudulent documents,” a copy of the complaint seen by Arab News said.

The complaint said the Sarim Burney Trust claimed the baby girls were orphans and had been found outside the gate of the trust. The trust had also claimed it tried its level best to find their parents but no person came forward to claim them.

The complaint said the suspects’ statements about the three girls were “contrary to the facts” and that the girls had been trafficked abroad “by way of adoption/guardianship.”

Investigation Officer Chaudhry Bilal requested the judge to remand Burney for 14 days in police custody. The magistrate, after hearing the arguments, handed over the accused to the FIA on a two-day remand.

“Meanwhile, the court rejected Burney’s request to discharge him from the case,” the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

According to local media reports, Burney alleged that a campaign was being run against him, vowing not to let his arrest get in the way of his philanthropic activities.

Arab News contacted the US Consulate in Karachi for to get their version, who refused to respond to specific queries.

“We are aware of reports regarding the arrest of Sarim Burney. This is an internal Pakistani judicial matter for Pakistan’s authorities to investigate,” Anastasia Kolivas, public diplomacy officer at the consulate, told Arab News.

“We have been clear and consistent in calling for respect for the rule of law, and we will continue to do so.”

Sindh press clubs demand action as report says 10 journalists killed across province

  • Pakistan-based media watchdog launches report which says from 2018-2023, 10 journalists killed in Sindh
  • Journalists say Sindh continues to remain one of Pakistan’s most concerning regions for their safety

KARACHI: Journalist unions and press clubs across Pakistan’s Sindh on Thursday urged the government to take urgent action to ensure freedom of expression and that journalists remained safe in the province, citing a report that said 10 media workers have been killed in the past five years there.

Representatives of press clubs and journalist unions from Sindh’s Sukkur, Khairpur, Hyderabad and Karachi cities attended the launch of a special report, titled: “Journalism in the Shadow of Violence” at the Karachi Press Club. The report was launched by Pakistan-based media and development sector watchdog, Freedom Network. The event was organized by the Sindh chapter of the Pakistan Journalists Safety Coalition (PJSC).

As per the report, 184 incidents of violence against journalists took place in Sindh between 2018 and 2023, whichincluded the killings of 10 journalists in the province. Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak said the report described the current situation of media freedoms and journalists’ safety in Sindh.

“Sindh continues to remain one of the most concerning regions for the safety of journalists in Pakistan, even though the province has a special legislation to combat impunity in crimes against journalists,” Khattak said, according to a press release by the PJSC.

safari park karachi elephant

President of the PJSC’s Sindh chapter, Amir Lateef, said the targeting of journalists in the province has increased alarmingly, especially in northern Sindh, which has witnessed a disturbing rise in physical attacks against journalists.

“The issue is that the state is not supporting journalists,” Lateef said. “We will use the report’s findings to lobby with government officials and policymakers to ensure that they support the journalist community against safety risks.”

Senior journalist Mazhar Abbas demanded media owners also be held accountable or the safety of their workers while Khan Muhammad, president of the Khairpur Press Club, said journalists in rural Sindh require support against legal and physical threats.

Imdad Buzdar, president of the Sukkur Press Club, called on journalists to unite for a constant struggle for their rights while Sajjad Khanzada, the Hyderabad Press Club’s president, said brazen attacks on journalists will continue until their perpetrators are brought to justice.

Khattak had earlier shared details of the report, the PJSC said, adding that it shows low-income backgrounds of critical journalists, the lack of enforcement of labor laws in the news industry and the lack of digital safety skills create pressures for local journalists. This, the PJSC said, makes them vulnerable to threats and forces them to take undue risks.

Pakistani gemstone traders urge government to adopt modern technology, remove restrictions to enhance exports

  • Export of gems declined by 82 percent and 10 percent in terms of quantity and value this year, official data shows
  • Conventional blasting methods damage gemstones, cause them to lose value, says leading exporter

KARACHI: Pakistani exporters and traders of gemstones and jewelry items on Thursday urged the government to adopt modern technological methods and remove restrictions to enhance exports from the South Asian country.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last month urged authorities to upgrade the country’s gems and precious stones sector to industry status. According to a report by Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce, the country’s exports of pearls and precious stones to China saw a 47 percent increase in 2023, showcasing the rising demand for Pakistani precious stones in China. Pakistan has huge reserves of emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz, aquamarine and tourmaline gemstones.

Syed MinHajjuddin Shah, chairman of the All-Pakistan Commercial Exporters Association of Rough & Unpolished Precious and Semi Precious Stones, told Arab News that other countries were taking advantage in the exports of gemstones by adopting modern technological methods where Pakistan was losing out.

“China is big market for Pakistani gems but other countries, including Sri Lanka, are taking benefit,” Shah said. “Due to lack of modern mining technology our products get wasted during mining process.”

The total import and export value of China’s jewelry industry reached a record high of $145.334 billion in 2023, an increase of 8.62 percent on a year-on-year basis. Pakistan’s exports of gems and precious stones to China saw a 47 percent increase in 2023, indicating growing recognition of the quality of Pakistani gemstones among Chinese buyers, as per a Chinese media report.

Since 2023, the demand for colored gemstones in China has been steadily expanding, supplementing the traditional asset of gold. According to market research by the China Gems and Jade Association (Beijing) Fund Management Company, the average price increase for colored gemstones across all categories in China during the first half of 2023 ranged between 30 percent and 50 percent. Prices for larger or relatively rare gems surged by as much as 100 percent to 150 percent.

Shah said conventional blasting methods used in Pakistan to extract precious stones result in fracturing and cracking that reduce the quality and value of the gemstones. This, in turn, makes them less desirable for use in jewelry and other applications.

“Adoption of modern technology for mining can save a huge quantity of gemstones which will ultimately lead to value addition and higher foreign exchange earnings,” he said, Pakistan can also increase its exports to Gulf countries.

Adnan Qadri, the convener of a standing committee on gems and jewelry producers, manufacturers and exporters of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) told Arab News that last year, Pakistan’s gems exports experienced significant challenges and fluctuations.

He said this was due to Pakistan’s move to impose restrictions on the export of gems and jewelry to comply with the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) conditions aimed at curbing money laundering and terror financing.

“This led to a dramatic drop in exports, from $30 million to less than $10 million,” Qadri explained. He said the FPCCI has proposed measures to the government on how it can boost exports of gemstones from the country.

According to official data, the export of gems declined by 82 percent and 10 percent in terms of quantity and value during the current fiscal year. Pakistan exported 966 kilograms of gems worth $5.6 million during July-April period of the current fiscal year as compared to 5,436 kilograms worth $6.3 million exported during the same period last year.

The FPCCI, the apex representative body of Pakistani traders and industrials, has pointed out that restrictions on exporting precious gems and gold jewelry through courier services in Pakistan has led exporters to resort to misdeclare precious items as artificial jewelry, resulting in suppressed exports in the sector.

“Pakistan’s export policy hinders the growth potential of the gems and jewelry industry, which constitutes only a minimal fraction of the country’s total exports (0.04-0.05 percent of total exports),” the FPCCI noted in a budget proposal for upcoming budget for fiscal year, FY25.

Muhammad Zubair Motiwala, chief executive of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan(TDAP) could not be reached for his comments on the export strategy.

Pakistan: Karachi to have elephant sanctuary of international standards in memory of Noor Jehan

Asia pakistan.

Global vets to return in June to relocate African elephant of Karachi Zoo

Malika & Sonia-1682778999114

ISLAMABAD: After the recent death of 17-year old African elephant Noor Jehan in Karachi Zoo, the global animal rights group Four Paws is planning to develop an elephant sanctuary in her memory in city’s Safari Park.

The facility will be constructed on the 17-acre land close to the Safari Park and will meet all the international standards.

Dr Amir Khalil, Director, Four Paws, told Gulf News the facility would be a “species-friendly home” and will not only help 18-year old Madhubala who is currently staying at the Karachi Zoo overcome the agony of losing her cousin, it would also provide better and sustainable conditions to the two other female African elephants Malika and Sonia who are already being kept in the Safari Park.

  • No respite in rogue elephants' conflicts with humans in Kerala
  • Ailing Pakistan elephant may be euthanised after collapsing
  • Pakistan: 17-year old ailing African elephant Noor Jehan dies after lying on ground for 9 days in Karachi Zoo

A letter of intent (LoI) has been written to the Administrator of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Dr Syed Saifur Rehman seeking the authorities’ nod to construct the sanctuary.

The Four Paws will bear all the expenses and requirements for construction of the sanctuary.

In the LoI, Dr Amir Khalil has also requested for the permission of the KMC to relocate Madhubala from the Karachi Zoo to the Safari Park.

The global animal rights group has also sought the control and management of the sanctuary in addition to upkeep and care of all elephants.

Home to the rescued elephants

Dr Amir Khalil was of the view that the sanctuary would not only cater to these three elephants, it would also be a home to the rescued elephants from other parts of the world.

To a question, he termed Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Shah and Administrator Karachi, Dr Syed Saifur Rehman very positive and forthcoming.

They remained in constant touch with the international vets from day one when Noor Jehan’s health deteriorated and facilitated the vets’ team and helped sort out things but unfortunately, Noor Jehan could not survive.

The provincial government’s vets, the local Zoo management and the animal rights activists also did a wonderful job providing all possible assistance and support to rescue Noor Jehan, he said.

Move to avoid further tragedies

Dr Amir Khalil said the permission (of building sanctuary) was sought to avoid any further tragedy and to give the elephants a better environment to live and enjoy in natural, peaceful and calm surroundings.

Owais Awan Advocate, legal consultant for the Four Paws International, also confirmed the LoI has been sent to the KMC seeking their permission to build a sanctuary in memory of Noor Jehan on the land close to the Safari Park.

We have received a very positive response from both the KMC and the provincial government of Sindh, he said, adding they have set up a task force to sort out and expedite allocation of the 17-acre land for this purpose as early as possible.

Seeking 25-year custody

“We are also seeking custody/management of the Elephant Sanctuary for at least 25 years so that the elephants’ care and look-after should continue uninterruptedly,” Awan said.

Once we receive a go ahead, we shall sign an MoU with the KMC and our experts will return to Karachi to build the sanctuary and incorporate all the international standards necessary in this regard. But before that we shall like to relocate Madhubala to the Safari Park which is close to the sanctuary site and possibly she would be shifted before the Eid Al Adha most probably in the last week of June or first week of July 2023), Owais said.

Karachi zoo’s elephant Madhubala to be shifted to Safari Park

safari park karachi elephant

Karachi zoo’s lonely elephant Madhubala is set to move to her new home as soon as next month, the administration confirmed Thursday.

The preparations to move the elephant has been finalised by the administration, who will shift the animal to the Safari Park.

Four Paws has set up a sanctuary for the elephant in the Safari Park which will become her new home.

The zoo administration has already placed a container inside Madhubala’s enclosure in order to train her. Madhubala enters and exits the container three to four times a day, they said.

KMC officials said that the sanctuary of Madhubala in the Safari Park is being developed with the support of Four Paws where she will be shifted in the next month.

The sanctuary already houses Malaika and Sonia in the Safari Park.

It should be noted that after the death of Noor Jahan elephant in Karachi Zoo in April last year, Madhubala was left alone, after which Four Paws experts and KMC management decided to transfer Madhu Bala to Safari Park.

Meet the two new African elephants who have just arrived at West Midlands Safari Park

A safari park has officially welcomed two new African elephants in a mammoth-sized achievement.

Watch more of our videos on Shots! and live on Freeview channel 276

West Midlands Safari Park has celebrated after they doubled their herd size overnight with the arrival of Suzy and Gitana, their newest African elephants.

The two females, both in their 40s, are already well on their way as they settle into their new home as they join elephant pen fan favourites Coco and Five.

Suzy and Gitana, have been on an amazing journey over the past few weeks, packing their trunks to travel from Pairi Daiza Zoo, in Belgium, before moving into their new home at the West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley .

Since their arrival, Suzy and Gitana have had time to settle into their new home, which consists of outdoor pools, mud wallows, dust baths, indoor sand beds and an enriched feeding area.

Veterinarian at Pairi Daiza, Alicia Quievy, said: "We are saddened to say goodbye to our magnificent elephants, whom we have cherished for so many years and with whom we have shared so much love.

"We are confident that West Midlands Safari Park will take excellent care of them, with the development of their new facility being more suitable for these older females."

safari park karachi elephant

African elephants face an uncertain future, with their wild population declining due to poaching, therefore they are listed as 'endangered' by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Head Keeper of Elephants at West Midlands Safari Park, Andy Plumb, said: "After nearly a year in planning, all of the elephant-keeping team are delighted with the safe arrival of Suzy and Gitana, which has doubled our herd numbers overnight.

safari park karachi elephant

"The reaction of Coco and Five has been a joy to see, as forming friendships with other individuals is a very important part of their social life. We are very excited to see how the new herd develops."

The African elephants can be seen on the four-mile Safari Drive, from the Grasslands Viewpoint on the African Walking Trail and from the Elephant Lodges.

Around the World in Analogue: Life in the Green City, Zelenograd

Back in 1958, Zelenograd was a new town formed and planned by the Soviet Union, specialized to become the central hub of electronics, microelectronics and the computer industry, and it has become as such to this very day for Russia. Dubbed as the "Green City" in reference to the city's color and the symbolic animal, the squirrel, Zelenograd offers much more as it provides wide, open spaces where modernity and nature meet. Through the photographs of Lomographer Igor Silaev a.k.a. mahoney66 , we see a gorgeous glimpse of his life in the okrug in harmonious colors.

safari park karachi elephant

I think 2020 was very hard for everyone. There are various restrictions in the country. Due to some restrictions, I even had to change jobs. But it was only good because I had more free time. Thanks to this, I returned to photography!

I live in Zelenograd (Autonomous district of Moscow). Unlike the center of Moscow, it is more calm and measured, and there are a lot of trees in our city (Zelenograd literally translates as green city ). Thanks to this, you can feel a certain connection with nature here, as if you are in the village. But at the same time, some areas look like a metropolis. There is also a very unusual architecture in the style of post-Soviet modernism, it is very inspiring. That's probably why I love this city.

safari park karachi elephant

First of all, I love my view from the window, because there are unreal sunsets. There are also many parks and alleys in the city, and in my opinion, they are much more picturesque than parks in the center of Moscow and not so mainstream. I would recommend Victory Park (not to be confused with the Park of the same name in Moscow) and the arboretum. From the Central parks, I would recommend VDNH, there is something to see and shoot.

Next to my house there is a Tanuki restaurant, where they prepare delicious Asian food. And from the bars I would recommend Hops & Coffee, it is located next to the train station. There are many varieties of author's beer and damn fine coffee!... and hot! If we talk about the center, then be sure to visit the cafe PEOPLE as PEOPLE -- this is a pleasant place where you can eat delicious and inexpensive food.

safari park karachi elephant

I Advise you to come to Moscow in the middle of summer, at this time there are the most comfortable weather conditions and you can walk all day long. Visit as many attractions and parks as possible, take a ride in the Moscow metro and take as much film with you as possible because here it is much more expensive! If you still need a film, then I recommend Perspektivalab . They have a good selection of films and the price is reasonable.

I like to think about the first time I went to Sokolniki Park with my girlfriend. That day, I was terribly stung by my new sneakers, but even that didn't spoil this beautiful day. We walked all day and took a lot of pictures. If you are in Moscow, be sure to go to Sokolniki Park!
