• Port Lympne Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered animals and wherever possible we aim to send animals born here to protected areas of their natural habitat where they can live free – just as they should be.
• We always make sure that the animals come first, from enclosure design to diet, no expense is spared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and source our meat from trustworthy suppliers.
• We design our enclosures with the animals in mind, so there’s lots of natural foliage and furniture to provide shelter and camouflage.
• We never lock our animals into viewing areas, so, just like in the wild, it may take some time to spot certain animals.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Questions & Answers

How long should we plan to spend at Safari Park? Is it a full day or more like the zoo?

If you're just going to wander through and look, not do any of the extras, and you get there when the park opens, then you can probably leave shortly after noon. We wanted to see the Cheetah run (spent extra to be in the inside area, and we took the safari trip to see the loose animals. Got to touch and feed the giraffe and a rhino. That was pretty cool.

My husband and I went (no kids) and we spent about 4-5 hours there. Similar to the same amount of time we have spent at the zoo.

I would plan on at least 4 hours. I also did a Adventure Safari ( the 2 hour one where you feed the giraffe- $120-so worth it). It is a large zoo and there is a lot of distance between enclosures. Also quite a few meet the animals up close. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a camera.

Plan and enjoy a full day. Have comfortable shoes too. Lots of walking.

Get there early and spend a full day. Lots of activities for kids, too.

You can there is plenty of activites or saffaris you can do they are just not included in the général admission and each of then are about 60 to 90$

It depends, you can easily spend a full day here if you do one of the safaris or get tired easily, it's a lot of walking. Less food options nearby but there is a picnic area available if you want to bring your own food to save money.

I would spend the whole day and take my time unless you are in a rush. It is a wide open area and it is nice to go to each section and enjoy its beauty.

Plan on at least 4 hours and take your time. It is similar to the zoo but covers a larger area and is not so crowded. Attempt to get their early to avoid long lines at the tram.

I would say 4 to 5 hours.

We did the included tram ride and the cheetah run. I would plan on most of the day and lots of walking. So much to see.

TravelDon...

We spent the entire day there and felt that we had adequately seen everything. We had a six year old and a three year old. The three year old ended up getting pulled around a lot in a wagon.

We did not take the "safari" ride nor the "hot air" balloon.

We did hang around to watch the cheetah run and the kids really liked that.

Overall, I think we spent a good 5 to 7 hours there.

Wildlife Safari Tour

The 1-hour Wildlife Safari is the most popular tour at San Diego Safari Park followed by the 90-minute Twilight Wildlife Safari. You go inside the African animal enclosure in an open-air covered truck. Twilight tours add a light meal. Deluxe Safari is 90 minutes long and also tours the Asian enclosures .

The worst thing about these Safaris is that there are sometimes so many opportunities for close-up photos of animals that you won’t know where to point your camera first.  The best part of them is that you have the opportunity to feed giraffes if the animals are feeling hungry. Don’t worry, they’re ALWAYS hungry.

There are 3 different variations of this Safari plus an alternative for those with teenagers:

Wildlife Safari

• Duration: 1 hour
• Price: $89 – 105 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: Ages 3+. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult
• What’s Special: The overwhelming SIZE of a 4-foot long giraffe head next to yours. And how daintily they take the acacia leaves from your fingers.

Twilight Wildlife Safari

• Duration: 90 minutes
• Price: $109 – 129 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: Ages 3+. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult 
• You’ll also enjoy a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic drink with some tasty nibbles at a stunning overlook.

Deluxe Safari

• What’s Special: The Deluxe Safari provides you with your best chance to pet a rhino. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s more likely than on either of the other truck safaris. Why? Maybe because the One-Horn rhinos in the Asian fields are a bit smaller than the White rhinos in the other safaris? Still, stroking the soft snout of a 3,500-pound animal instead of a 5,000-pound one is ok with me. And there are always hungry giraffes!

Combine A Truck Safari with a Zipline Experience

If you’ve got teenagers or other adrenalin junkies in your group, try the Deluxe Flightline Safari (further down this page). It combines a shorter truck caravan safari with a 3,520-foot zipline ride. Same cost, but more experiences!

Wildlife Safari Tips

Feed giraffes, but don’t touch them . Keep your hands low during feeding. Raise your hand just a bit so that they can see the acacia leaves. Then let them reach down for the leaves.

Why? They use their heads as battering rams in dominance contests. Your friendly hand reaching towards their head can be viewed as an aggressive gesture. So no high-fives with giraffe horns. That avoids misunderstandings with a creature 10 times your size and makes for better photos as well.

THIRSTY? Bring drinking water in a container with a closed lid. Sip, don’t guzzle unless you’ve got an iron bladder.

MOBILITY ISSUES : If anyone in your party has mobility issues or needs to use a wheelchair call 619-718-3000 after you purchase your ticket. They will make arrangements for you.

RESTRICTIONS

• Selfie sticks must be stowed away. They can scare animals.
• No outside food, beverages, or bulky camera equipment (small tripods are ok if they’re used as monopods)
• Admission is separate and required.
• 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but $15 Administrative Change Fee will be charged.
• Less than 5 days before reservation – changes not permitted

CANCELLATIONS

• 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but $25 Cancellation Fee will be charged.

Sun-Up Cheetah Safari Tour

Do you love cheetahs? Then this is San Diego Safari Park’s best tour for you. It’s the very best way to get amazing cheetah photos like the one above.

• Duration : 1 hour
• Start Time: 8:00 AM on most Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays
• Price: $99 – 105. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
• Age restrictions: All ages ok. There must be a responsible paid adult present for every 3 children. Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Proof of age of children may be required.

You’ll get into the park early and meet your experienced guide for a walk down to Shiley’s Cheetah Run . There you’ll see a cheetah fly by at nearly 70 miles per hour from a prime viewing location.

After the cheetah chases the mechanical lure down the track you’ll head down to the Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook . There you’ll get to see another speedster, this one flying through the air. After all that rushing around, relax with a savory brunch. Enjoy coffee, tea, mimosas, and the only San Diego restaurant view that includes giraffes, rhinos, and antelope.

• Purchase your admission ticket(s) in advance online. You will be arriving before the ticket sale booths are open. Have your admission ticket printed or ready to be scanned on your cell phone.
• To get the best viewing locations for all of these tour events, arrive about 30 minutes before check-in so you get the first pick. But don’t worry if you can’t be early. There aren’t any “bad” locations.

Cart Safari Tour

A Cart Safari is the best tour at San Diego Safari park if you’ve got small children or babies. The cart is much lower to the ground than the truck used in the Wildlife Safari. It’s much easier to get in and out to view animals while carrying infants or toddlers. The ride is also much smoother since Cart Safaris only go on paved roads.

You’ll have a private tour driver/guide. They’ll be masked and the cart has special screens to social distance your guide from your household group. But they’ll still be able to hear and see you to answer just about any question and direct you to wildlife feeding opportunities and photo stops.

• Price: $55+ per person. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
• Age restrictions: None. Infants and children under the age of 2 are welcome as long as they sit on an adults’ lap. There’s a limit of two lap children per group. Children 15 years old and younger must be with a paid adult.
• Two Options: Asian Cart Safari or African Cart Safari

There Are 2 Flightline Safari Zipline Rides and Tours at Safari Park

Flightline safari.

• Duration : 1 hour. Includes orientation session and Fledgling flight
• Price: $77 – 85
• Age restrictions: 8+ years old. There must be one paid parent or guardian accompanying up to 3 children aged 8 to 15 at all times. If you’re 16 or 17 you may ride the flightline alone, but you must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver at check-in.

Take an exhilarating flight down a zip line 2/3rds of a mile long. Soar up to 130 feet above herds of wild antelope, giraffes, and rhinos. 

You’ll take a training course on the Fledgling run. There you’ll become familiar with the procedures and safety equipment. Once you’re comfortable with the short Fledgling flight, you’ll be transported to the launch platform for the Flightline Safari. You land near the campground at Kilima Point.

Deluxe Flightline Safari

This tour is a very good deal for groups that include restless teenagers looking for a bit more action. It adds a truck caravan tour into the African plains exhibits before your orientation session and zipline flight. You can get up close with the animals, take great photos, and ride the zip line for the price of just the Wildlife Safari truck tour.

• Duration : 90 minutes.
• Price: $89 – 105

Safety Restrictions: You will be asked to sign a liability waiver. You must be able to understand the waiver and be able to follow instructions in English. There’s a weight limit of between 60 and 300 pounds (your weight may be checked). 

The safety harness must fit comfortably. Wear snug-fitting closed-toe shoes. Do not drink alcohol before the Flightline Safari. If the trainers or those assisting you think that you’ve been imbibing you will not be allowed on the zip line. 

If you don’t meet all of these qualifications you will be denied access to the zip line and there will be no refunds.

Behind the Scenes Safari Tour

If you’re looking for an insider’s view, these will be San Diego Safari Park’s best safaris for you. There are 3 different safari options available, each focusing on one animal or exhibit area. But no two Behind the Scenes Safari Tours are exactly the same. All of them provide an intimate look at off-exhibit areas that are inaccessible to the general population of Safari Park guests.

You’ll take a ride on a small electric cart and then explore on foot with a guide who’ll fill you in on the park’s animals and conservation initiatives. 

There are three Behind the Scenes Safari Tour s:

Elephants & Friends

Have a close encounter of the pachyderm kind! See the Safari Park elephant herd from a private viewing area. Discover how they’re cared for and what’s being done to protect their wild relatives. Selfie sticks are not permitted on this tour.

• Price: $89 – 105 per person. Admission is separate and required for each guest.
• Age restrictions: Children 3-15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. A maximum of 2 children per group.

Rhinos & Friends

Get close to rhinos. Explore behind the scenes at Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. Here the Safari Park staff is developing assisted reproductive techniques that may bring back the Northern White Rhino from functional extinction.

You’ll also take a trip around the park’s large field exhibits and view many other species there. You have to be able to stand or walk for at least 60 minutes to take this tour.  Selfie sticks are not permitted here.

• Age restrictions: Children 3-15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. A maximum of 2 children per group. A maximum of 2 children per group.

Roar & Snore Safari Tour

In my ever so humble opinion, and that of many others, this is the BEST safari at San Diego Safari Park. You can experience the sights and sounds of sleeping on safari in Africa without traveling there (no extra vaccinations needed!).

Fall asleep to elephants’ rumblings. Wake to the sound of lions roaring. But don’t worry about it being too noisy to sleep. Most of the time it’s so quiet that you can hear the footsteps of giraffes passing by. 

What happens at Roar & Snore? Close-up animal encounters, night-time guided walking tours, and a backstage look at some of the animal accommodations. You’ll also enjoy good food, and relaxing around a campfire.

The last time Bob and I went, we saw the inner workings of Lion Camp at night. Did you know that they sometimes put different colored glitter in each lion’s food? Me neither! The colored particles let keepers know which scat belongs to which cat. Examining their feces is just one way that keepers monitor lions’ health.

The sleepovers include a catered hot dinner and breakfast. They’ve got something for everyone with many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan selections. For adults, there’s a cash bar. And everyone will enjoy sitting around the campfire eating s’mores and listening to the guides and campers trading stories of their wildlife experiences.

Most Roar & Snore Safaris include an evening or early morning Africa Tram ride. It’s magical. The animals in the African multi-species enclosures are at their frisky best. It seems as if they’re trying to get all of their sparring, running, and chasing done in the cooler weather. 

The campsite overlooks the African Plains multi-species enclosure loaded with antelope, giraffes, rhinos, gazelles, wildebeests, and many other animals. Clean restrooms and a limited number of showers are available. The tents are clean and spacious.

If you cringe at the thought of sleeping on a cot or the floor of a tent you’ll probably be happier spending the night at a nearby hotel. I’ve written a guide to the best local lodging close to Safari Park .

• What’s Special: Adult topics like animal reproduction are presented by keepers. There are more animal experiences than during the All-Ages offering. The guided hikes are more strenuous. We went backstage at Lion Camp to see the big cats’ bedrooms and care areas.  It was dark in spots and the footing was a bit challenging. There was a cash bar for adults during dinner and the campfire experience.

Girl Scouts Roar and Snore

• Age restrictions: Ages 5+ with adults
• Pricing: $139+
• What’s Special: This is a troop oriented event. There are group guided walks, conservation related activities and animal-oriented crafts.

School Nights Roar and Snore

• Age restrictions: Ages 3-12 with adults
• What’s Special: This is a great field trip. The kids will get hands-on educational conservation & animal care experiences 

Supreme Roar and Snore

• Age restrictions: Aged 8 – 15 with adults.
• Pricing: $303+
• What’s Special: This is a great bundle of activities. Soar into the Roar & Snore camp on a zipline Flightline Safari. Spy on animals in the Night Vision Safari with vision-enhancing goggles. See the Sun Up Cheetah Safari with an exclusive viewing spot. And finally ride into the herds of giraffes, rhinos and antelopes on a morning Wildlife Safari.

Ultimate Safari Tour

Assemble a Safari Park tour that is customized to your interests and desired activities. Full disclosure, we haven’t been on this safari, but we’re saving up for it! Because of that, I’ve asked a LOT of questions on the phone to the booking team. I hope that you’ll benefit from my research. And if you go before I do, send me pictures!

When you book your Ultimate Safari know the answers to the following questions before you call:

• What are your favorite animals?
• Are you interested in feeding any of these animals?
• Which animal exhibits would you like to see behind the scenes and find out more about how they’re cared for? 
• Do you have any dietary restrictions? They serve you lunch on this safari. You don’t want this experience spoiled by food that you can’t eat!

Duration: 5 hours. It’s easy to add too many activities and animal experiences to this safari. You’ll have to be selective so you don’t feel rushed. Your planner will help you decide how much to see in the time that you have.

Price: Varies depending upon day and seasonality

• $675+ for a 5-hour tour. Priced per person.
• $50 – children aged 2 and under
• Children aged 15 and under must be with a paid adult

Age and other restrictions: Depends upon the activities you choose.

You must book/reserve your tour at least 72 hours in advance . San Diego Safari Park usually only schedules one Ultimate Safari per day. The animals need to be fed and cared for daily and their keepers need to be notified so they can make special accommodations for Ultimate Safari visitors. 

Balloon Safari

Soar 400 feet up in a helium balloon. You’ll have great views of San Diego Safari Park and the San Pasqual Valley agricultural area that surrounds the park. 

Duration: About 30 minutes. You’ll spend 10 to 12 minutes at the highest viewing point.

Price: Varies depending upon peak hours and days. Plan on spending $20 or less. Reservations are NOT available online. Pay at the gate.

Ages restrictions:   All ages. 

Tips: The best times to fly are between 9:00 AM and noon, but it’s open until sunset. The ride may shut down due to windy or rainy conditions. Afternoons in Escondido can be windy. The balloon is grounded shortly before Cheetah Run at about 3:00 PM and afterward while any cheetahs remain near the Shiley’s Cheetah Run track. 

Africa Tram Tour

Africa Tram is San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s best tour if you’re on a budget . It’s one of the highlights of the park. And it’s free with your park entrance ticket! We’ve ridden this attraction hundreds of times and plan to do it many more.

You get to see dozens of species at once, and they’re always doing something new. The many thousands of rare plants surrounding you and the over 900 acres of open California Sage Scrub habitat make it even more appealing.

Duration: 25 – 30 minutes.

Price: FREE with your paid admission to Safari Park, except for children in school groups. Ride as many times as you want to.

Ages restrictions:   All ages. Children under 2 years of age must remain in their parent’s lap.

• Skip this one if you have booked a Caravan or Cart Safari, and you are feeling like you don’t have time to see everything on your list.
• In a rush? You can purchase priority boarding. Check the kiosk at the entrance to the Africa Tram queue. 
• When’s the best time to ride the Africa Tram? The peak hours are from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. So anytime before or after will be good. The animals are most active when the weather is cool. Many people try to take the first Africa Tram trip or one of the last ones for that reason. But there’s really not that much difference. You’re going to see spectacular creatures whenever you go. 
• Where’s the best place to sit? We like sitting in the 2nd or 3rd car. The first car can be a bit noisy. However, that car is the only one with accessible seating for those with mobility issues. So it may be best for you. 
• Which side of the tram is best? You’ll see animals on both sides. And you are encouraged to stand up if the vehicle is not moving. So you’ll be able to take great photos no matter where you sit. However, the cheetahs, zebras, and most giraffes and rhinos are on the right side.
• Expect long lines on weekends & holidays. There are signs that tell you approximately how long the wait times are. They are fairly accurate. The longest times are from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.The wait times are shorter during Cheetah Run (around 3:30 PM). We also like late afternoon trips because it’s getting cooler and they’re less crowded. The last trip of the day starts 45 minutes before the park closes. 
• Request an “Easy Access Pass” if you have difficulty standing for long periods or are of limited mobility. With this pass, any guest with a disability and 3 additional members of your group, can be directed to a separate boarding area. Park employees are glad to provide extra boarding and disembarking assistance (if requested), to those boarding from the Easy Access areas.

7 Tips for Better Safari Tours

• Save money by reserving in advance versus purchasing the same day in the park. Plus you’ll be more likely to be able to choose a convenient time. 
• Get the best deal by booking on non-peak days . Safari Tour tickets generally cost less on weekdays. Non-holiday Mondays and Tuesdays are the cheapest. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are a bit more expensive. You’ll pay the most on weekends and holidays.
• Include parking fees in your budget. Parking is not included and must be paid upon arrival at the parking entrance to Safari Park. Parking costs $15 for passenger vehicles and $20 for RVs. You can have preferred parking by adding $18 to either of the parking fees. “Preferred parking” means that you get a spot close to the entry/exit and you don’t have to walk uphill to get to the Park entrance.
• Arrive a minimum of 45 minutes before your tour or safari . This will allow time for you to travel from your parking or drop-off point to your safari check-in location. Leave earlier during holidays and on Friday afternoons when the traffic is usually heavier.
• Check in 10 minutes before the beginning of your safari.
• Know where your safari check-in location is. Check their map from the San Diego Safari Park website before you arrive.
• Download their map app. It’s available for both Apple and Android. Apple iOS download here.

About Refunds or Cancellations of San Diego Safari Park Tours or Safaris

• There are no refunds if you arrive late or are a no-show.
• Make changes or cancellations early! There are no changes or cancellations less than 5 days before the date of your safari.
• What if you get sick? Call them at 619-718-3000 as soon as you know that you can’t go. Their Reservations Sales Department is open every day at 8:30 AM. They will need your Order Number, so have it with you when you call.
• Pay attention to the age limits and other restrictions for certain safaris. You won’t be given a refund at the last minute because you didn’t read the tour descriptions.
• The park reserves the right to cancel any safari or tour because of bad weather, animal welfare concerns or concerns for your safety. If they have to cancel your safari they try to do it as soon as possible and do their best to reschedule your safari at your convenience. If you cannot reschedule, your money will be refunded.  However, if it’s raining and they don’t call to cancel, enjoy! The park can be wonderful when it’s wet. Closing Thoughts

Take the Caravan Safari Deluxe or the Ultimate Safari if you’re visiting for the first time and may not be returning for a long while. Splurge a bit. If you’re feeling guilty about the extra expense, tell yourself that you’re spending the extra cash to help end wildlife extinction.

If one of the paid safari experiences is not in your budget, then take the Africa Tram. Maybe twice. Once in the morning and again right before closing time.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Walking Guides

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a lot to see and do.  Getting the most out of this park requires planning ahead to make sure you see as much as possible.  Fun Diego Family has created two San Diego Zoo Safari Park Walking Guides.  These guides are designed so to take you past every part of the Safari Park.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is huge at 1,800 acres.  However, visitors can not access the vast majority of the Safari Park.  The main walking areas of the park are not that much larger than the 100-acre San Diego Zoo.  It is possible to walk the entire park in one visit.

The Safari Park has three main areas.  The upper area sits above the rest of the park and features the new Australian exhibits, gardens, Condor Ridge and Tiger Trail.  The lower area is home to the Lion Camp, elephants and the African Outpost.  This is where the Africa Tram ride through the main park starts.  Previously this area was reached by walking down a very steep hill.  Now an elevator takes you down.

The middle area of the park is the entrance and features many attractions centered around Nairobi Village and a scenic lagoon.  This area is home to many shows and exhibits.  Currently, the upper and lower areas do not connect.  You have to retrace your steps through Nairobi Village.  However, this is likely to change as it appears that a trail is being built to connect the upper Tiger Trail with the lower Elephant Valley area.

When you enter the Safari Park, the road forks immediately past the turnstiles.  You can go either way as the paths meet up a short distance past the turnstiles.  We like to go right through the Wings of the World aviary.  Going left will take you past some of the main gift shops.  We save this route for when we are leaving.

Coming out of Wings of the World will put you in the center of the Safari Park Base Camp area.  There is the Animal Ambassador Stage which hosts regular animal encounters.  There is also the carousel and beloved rhino statute.  This area also opens into Nairobi Village, a hub of activity and the central location of the Safari Park.

At this point, you need to make some major decisions.  Our San Diego Zoo Safari Park Walking Guides feature two tours that focus on taking in the entire Safari Park.  The first tour we recommend if you come early in the morning .  The second tour is better if you come late in the morning or afternoon .

On the early morning tour, you head straight for the Africa Tram, stopping only at the new Lemur Walk exhibit.  From there you tour the lower area of the park and head back to the main Nairobi Village area.  At this point, you start the second part of the tour in the upper area of the park.

The second tour has you heading for the upper part of the Safari Park first.  You do the tram ride and the Lemur Walk exhibit later in the day when the animals are more active.  Our first visit to the new Lemur Walk was around 1 PM and it was disappointing because the lemurs were asleep.  The guide told us to come back after 4 PM when they are active.

Throughout the Safari Park, there are 19 locator signs.  We will use these locator signs to help guide our tours.  Of course, it is good to pick up the free park maps available at the entrance.

Note these tours do not take into account shows or special events like the Cheetah Run at 3:30.  Also, we are not discussing dining options.  The good news is that the Safari Park has food options throughout the park.  If you get hungry you will never be far from a place to eat.

Shepherd’s Huts @ Elmley Nature Reserve

Maasai Mara & beyond: 5 must-see safari parks in Kenya

As a key stop on the Great Migration, the Maasai Mara is one of Africa's biggest draws. But go beyond and you can find quieter parks for budget-friendly ways to spot big cats and more.

Few visitors to Kenya can resist the siren call of its top wildlife-watching area, the Maasai Mara. Its sweeping grasslands ­— blonde and close-cropped in the dry season, green and earthy after rain — stretch for hundreds of miles. Famous for big cats and the drama of the Great Migration, this is the kind of place where a budding interest in all things safari can develop into an addiction.

During the Great Migration, which visits Kenya between July and September, vast herds of wildebeest and zebras hover nervously on the riverbanks, waiting to cross. Their fear is well-placed: crocodiles lurk in the water, ready to snap. For visitors, witnessing such scenes can be life-changing. But with wildlife in residence all year, the Mara is compelling off-season, too. And, as a bonus, once the milling migrants have finally dispersed, prices tend to plummet.

Partly council-managed, partly community-owned, the Mara is several parks in one. While some camps charge a fortune for an all-inclusive, fly-in experience in a private conservancy, affordable alternatives also exist. If you can stretch to a group tour or a rented 4x4 vehicle, with or without a driver, head west to the delightful and relatively crowd-free Mara Triangle. Here, it’s possible to pitch a tent at a public campsite and let the wilderness work its magic.

The villages of Sekenani or Talek also make good-value bases. Located just outside the main reserve, they’re cheap to reach by matatu (public minibus) or shared taxi from Narok, which is on bus routes from the capital Nairobi. The low-cost camps and guesthouses in these villages organise group drives into the reserve. While many of them deliver an excellent experience, there’s an elephant in the room: the Narok side of the Mara is on the brink of overtourism, with some drivers speeding, jostling on the river banks and bending the official rules about crowding predators. The Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association is a good place to find a trustworthy guide who will avoid this practice.

Alternatives beyond the Mara

In Kenya’s state-run parks, close-to-nature accommodation comes cheap and shares the same territory as the high-end lodges.

1. Nairo bi Best for: a quick warm-up

No other African capital is as blessed with wilderness as Nairobi; its eponymous national park lies on its doorstep and is also an ecological education and research hub, with an exemplary record in protecting rhinos. You can see giraffes, hyenas and even lions here. The Kenya Wildlife Service has no accommodation in the park, but it’s easy to plan day trips from the many low-cost hotels — either in central Nairobi or out of town.How to do it: Park entry is US$43 (£35) per day. Swara Acacia has half-board doubles from US$94 (£75).

2. Tsavo West Best for: lions

Tsavo West National Park is half way between Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya’s deep south, and elephants, leopards and rhinos can be found here. But it’s the lions that everyone wants to see — descendants of maneless males that once terrorised a group of construction workers.How to do it: Park entry is US$52 (£42) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$20 (£16) per person. Bandas (self-catering cottages) from US$50 (£40) per person.

3. Amboseli Best for: elephants

Mount Kilimanjaro looms above the acacia-dotted grasslands of Amboseli, a national park south of Nairobi. Since 1972 the park has been home to the Amboseli Elephant Research Project — the world’s longest-running study of elephant behaviour in the wild. How to do it: Park entry is US$70 (£55) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$30 (£24) per person. Bandas cost from US$90 (£71) per person.

4. Meru Best for scenery

If you’re keen to get away from the crowds, try Meru. It’s one of the country’s most under-rated national parks, around a five-hour drive northeast of Nairobi. Cooled by gushing streams, it’s a stronghold for hippos and other animals endemic to East Africa such as long-necked gerenuk antelopes.How to do it: Park entry is US$52 (£42) per day. Kenya Wildlife Service campsites cost US$20 (£16) per person. Bandas cost from US$80 (£64) per person.

Sleeping Wild: Glamping and luxurious lodge stays in Safari Parks and Farms across the UK

As much as I would love to dash off to the Kruger National Park, I'm feeling much more comfy right now back in the good old UK. But I do love seeing wild animals in large safari parks where they have room to roam and, as much as possible, in a natural habitat. Most safari and wildlife parks in the UK are truly wonderful institutions - not least for all the amazing conservation work they do and the programmes they run to rehabilitate endangered species. By visiting these places, you are contributing to this process and you get to see these wonderful animals up close. And safari parks in the UK are are levelling up big style. Yes of course lots of us have done the excellent drive ourselves around a big safari park, head into the monkey enclosure, gibbon shows bottom and snaps off car aerial, all die laughing and drive home. But stop right there. Literally stop. Because get this: the safari park will let you actually stay the night . This revelation has caused me a certain amount of hysteria and quite rightly so let me tell you. Because these places have made glamping out with the wild animals the stuff of dreams (unless you have an irrational fear of sleeping in a safari park, then it's the stuff of nightmares). I don't want to spoil the surprise too much, but you can go glamping in one of these stupendous safari parks and wake up in the morning, open the curtains and see giraffes roaming nearby , red pandas gurning in through the window or leopards yawning in a tree right outside. The glamping accommodation and lodges in these safari parks are beyond gorgeous and please don't be nervous, they don't leave you in the lion enclosure with a sleeping bag and a tin of Whiskers - you are staying in places of unrivalled luxury . Treehouses, glamping pods, glass-walled lodges , safari tents with hot tubs , you name it. Safari Lodges at West Midlands Safari Park

West Midlands Safari Park Lodges provide a quite extraordinary and truly immersive overnight wildlife adventure , where you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stepped through an elephant shaped portal into the outer reaches of the Masai Mari. Nope, in actual fact you are just off the A456 near Kidderminster. What is wonderful about this whole experience is that, while not a budget option (it's in the treat category this one) most of us would not be able to afford to pack our khakis and head off to Africa - let alone stay in a lodge overlooking elephant watering holes when we get there. Enter West Midlands Safari Park lodges, where, not only can you visit a beautiful, award-winning safari park and see everything from lions to rhinos, you can sleep the night in one of their gorgeous (and I mean that with a capital G) lodges and wake up with elephants coming down for a drink right outside your window. The park itself is a vast, drive-around safari that takes you through areas such as Carnivores, the African plains, Wild Asia and the Borderlands. If you don't want to drive yourself there are minibus tours with experienced guides to tell you all you need to know. But it's night time where things get really interesting. Stay in one of their jaw dropping lodges and get a ringside view into the enclosures of elephants, red panda or cheetah depending on which lodge you choose. The divine lodges are furnished very tastefully, very luxuriously and completely in keeping with the safari theme. A really fantastic and very wild treat.

Port Lympne , a hugely well known safari park and - ultimately - a brilliant conservation project under the Aspinall foundation, has been looking after endangered species for years and years; releasing black rhino, gorillas and many other animals back into the wilds of their natural countries. The stuff they are doing is nothing short of marvellous. A chunk of all profits raised from visitors goes straight back into saving these wonderful creatures, so with all this in mind, you don't need any more reason to book a safari in this wonderful place. But things get even better: Port Lympne Safari Park offers a myriad of accommodation from cosy glamping to downright push the boat out luxury, and it is well worth the extra to have an overnight stay. The accommodation includes treehouses with birds eye views across the park, safari tents overlooking the bear habitat, cottages in the giraffe enclosure, transparent geodomes in the forest, hideaway huts, glamping pods and shepherds huts.....all the way up to the magnificent timber clad Lion Lodges sitting within the lions huge enclosure . The lodges have vast picture windows to view these big cats up close and are a completely unique blend of safari chic and urban Manhattan living. It is safe to say you will never stay anywhere else quite like this. All the accommodation at Port Lympne is done with care and thoughtfulness so that the animals remain undisturbed in their spacious habitats. Wonderful stuff.

A family favourite and one of the best known wildlife parks in the UK is Longleat Safari Park. Tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside and housing the lavish stately home of the Marquess of Bath, Longleat has long been popular with all the family; you can drive yourself through huge enclosures of big game, lions, tigers, cheetahs and pretty much every wild animal you could wish to imagine. They've got Annie the elephant - rescued from a circus and fully enjoying retirement, wolf packs and of course - the monkey enclosure where you can drive through and collect curious monkeys on your roof on the way. There are some beautiful self catering cottages to hire on the estate of Longleat itself, but if you want to camp nearby, have a look at the camping and glamping available at Botany Camping https://botanycamping.com/ This campsite is just a few minutes drive from Longleat Safari park and offers glamping in a plethora of pretty multicoloured bell tents with heaters - hurrah! - and futon beds. If you have your own campervan or tent then they have plenty of touring pitches too and the kids will love this family friendly site. Just check you aren't one monkey too many when you leave Longleat and return back to your tent.....

A very different kind of wild here at Knepp Safaris ....in 3,500 acres of lovely Sussex countryside you can safari across the plains to encounter herds of wild ponies, deer, cattle and pigs as well as birds, mammals and reptiles. The tours can be taken in their own safari vehicle or you can go on a guided walking tour in a setting that - while chillier - can give the African bush a run for its money. It is a wonderful place to stay, either in their Wildlife campsite if you have your own gear, or glamping in a treehouse , shepherds hut or yurt . Wherever you lay your head you will be fully immersed in the sounds and sights of nature. Good to note here that it is for adults and older children (12+) to ensure the quiet observation of wildlife. So you can be sure of a fairly peaceful experience too. A team of highly experience naturalists lead different expeditions in animal tracking , early morning nature walks, dusk safaris (using echo-locators to find bats), bird watching and a myriad of other wild and wonderful adventures that make for a safari with a difference. The vast array of things to see and do will make you see wildlife in the UK in a totally different light. You can of course just come along for a safari, but here at Knepp they have some really beautiful accommodation so its worth staying a night or two for the full immersive experience. A rare treat.

Roar and Snore - the campsite located in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a great place to go for a family adventure with a difference. As the name suggests, you can see wild animals by day and at night, bed down near another pack of wild animals - snoring campers. It is tents only at this fab little site, with great facilities including large pitches, hot showers, very clean toilets and of course, ringside access to a whole host of wild animals at the Wildlife park including polar bears, lions, tigers and seals - in fact around 475 animals in total. Campers are allowed to go in and out of the wildlife park as often as they wish - it is a ten minute walk away so while you aren't camping right alongside them you are pretty close - and once in you will be treated to a host of shows and ranger talks to find out even more about the animals they have in the park. A great family friendly and excellent value safari break.

And for anyone who doesn't want the size and scale of a huge wildlife or safari park then there are also a number of other awesome options where you can go camping and glamping alongside some slightly less wild animals. Many farms across the UK are home to some slightly tamer varieties for those who don't want to wake up peering into the jaws of a big cat. Although frankly that's all down to the individual. I for one find goats terrifying. Anyway, for a more homegrown experience, there are some excellent places for close up animal encounters (homegrown style), and you can sleep alongside them too.....

Featherdown Farm Stays

Down on the farm something rather marvellous is happening. A true, back to nature, old fashioned experience here, where you can wake up, collect fresh eggs and cook them on the campfire before walking round the farm and feeding the animals which roam the fields. It is a simpler way of life ; get up close and personal to the animals, go on a farm tour , see how a working farm is run and best of all, teach those kids where food comes from - field to fork. Too much? Well, a recent study showed that one in five primary school children don't know where milk comes from, so it can be an educational journey too. Featherdown run a whole host of farm stays all over the UK (and beyond actually) and the one familiar feature of each is the level of luxury you will be staying in while here. There is no bedding down in the hay barn at Featherdown; it is a luxurious glamping experience, with large safari tents, comfy beds, private bathrooms and wood stoves. Plus, you are boosting the income of the farmers and their families and you come away with a much better appreciation of how the countryside works. A farm stay with a real difference.

Cotswold Farm Park is something of an institution, having been founded in 1971 by Joe Henson and now run by his son Adam. At the heart of the whole thing is a passion for British farming and sustainability - initially created to protect rare breeds and now home to hundreds of different animals. Down on the farm you can see newborn piglets, calves and foals in the Animal Barn or get up close and personal with smaller animals like guinea pigs, rabbits, chicks and goat kids in the Discovery barn. There are of course, several rare breeds on on the farm too and lovely wildlife trails to go on to spot birdlife and butterflies. To let off some steam, run wild in one of the many awesome play areas - indoor and outdoor in case of rain - or climb over decommissioned tractors and combine harvesters. You can bring your own horse and enjoy the gorgeous private estate in the Cotswolds including a jumps course and trails through the woodland and across rivers. Cotswold Farm Park also has a lot of accommodation available that should suit pretty much every budget and whim; wooden camping pods , bell tents , lodges, safari tents ...and for those who don't want to go glamping on the farm, there are excellent touring pitches. Entrance to the park is included in the price for as long as your stay, so that's all the activites taken care of too!

This vast 3,300 acre nature reserve on the Isle of Sheppey just off the north coast of Kent, is the only family owned and managed nature reserve in the UK, and the only one where you can stay overnight. During the day, take a nature trail with a difference on one of their huge safari trucks, where you will be guided around the reserves winding waterways looking for birdlife and roaming cattle. Or take part in a walking tour, led by an experienced guide who will tailor the route of the walk depending on the time of day - so you have the best chance possible to see the wildlife whether you are walking at dawn or dusk. A piece of magic right here in Kent.

Humblebee Farm - nestled into the countryside between the North York Moors National Park and the rugged Yorkshire coastline - is a working farm where you can come and stay and get involved with all the aspects of farming life. Whether it is feeding the pigs , collecting fresh eggs, wildlife spotting from a bird hide or visiting some of the farm animals on the Humblebee Farm interactive Nature Trail , you won't be short of things to do. It is really lovely here, a quiet and rural spot surrounded by wild flowers and it is a paradise for children and adults alike, providing a simple and very welcome break from everyday life. The glamping though is far from simple at this award winning site. Luxury cottages, cabins with hot tubs, yurts and bells tents make up a veritable bevvy of wonderful accommodation options, and there is also an excellent camping and caravan touring site complete with firepits and fabulous sunsets.

Bolton Abbey in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales is quite simply idyllic; rolling green countryside, narrow lanes, stone walls and slow pace of life makes you feel you have been transported into a begone era. Catgill Farm, set in this gorgeous location and with spectacular views across the Wharf Valley , offers happy campers the chance to sleep out surrounded by all this loveliness down on their family run farm . They offer luxury glamping in the form of t imber pods and bell tents , all - may I add - with their own wood fired hot tub and glorious views across the fields. The beautifully manicured touring campsite - for those with their own tent or campervan - has plenty of space, a small stream winding through and more of the same breathtaking views. It is a truly lovely place. Hang out on this farm or head to another. 100 metres down the road is Hesketh Farm park - a working farm with over 1000 livestock - a veritable treat for those who love farm animals, tractors and all that goes with it. You can meet the residents, have a go at feeding and petting some of the animals and get lost in the straw maze, it's all good old fashioned fun. Stroll back to Catgill Farm for an evening of relaxation and campfire cooking or head out to the popular Devonshire Arms pub down the road. This campsite location takes a lot of beating.
