INTRODUCTION

As you may know, several notable stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen DeGeneres, and Taylor Swift live in the Beverly Hills area located in the neighborhood of Hollywood Hills.

Of course, celebrities don't all live right next to each other, neither they are available for all days of the year, so it's not easy to find their homes without a bit of guidance.

As a result, several tour companies have made a name for themselves by providing tours of celebrity houses, residences, and filming locations.

However, if you have a car (or bike) you can explore on your own!

Los Angeles is known as a sprawling city and most celebrities live far enough that you will need to use a car to really get to see many of them.

Also, in many cases, the places you visit will no longer be occupied by famous people who once lived there, but they are still historically significant.

Several notable properties are difficult to see from the street, but it's important that you do not stop and hold up traffic while driving through these neighborhoods.

And of course, it is important to be respectful of people's homes and privacy.

To visit where your favorite celebrity lives, our picks for top things to do in LA .

Can you drive by celebrity homes in Beverly Hills?

Beverly Hills houses many famous Hollywood celebs, and you can drive by these celebrities' homes but do not stop. These homes are private property and personal space.

It's also worth noting that in most cases, these houses are either in gated communities or are far enough behind a gate that you won't be able to see them very well.

For the best views, trust a local tour guide.

CELEBRITY HOME BUS TOURS

Traveling through Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and the surrounding areas simply isn't reasonable without a vehicle of some sort.

Public transportation is not a good option for such a tour. So, you need private vehicles.

Thankfully, these many services and tour companies not only provide transportation but also offer commentary about each of the celebrity homes you will visit.

For disabled persons, you will find collapsible wheelchairs on approximately all these buses following the disabilities act.

These wheelchairs have removable wheels to provide more comfort to the disabled passenger.

Emotional support dogs or any other pet is not allowed. Only service animals as per the California State Law and Americans Disabilities Act are allowed.

If you want to see the handful of locations where the stars live without having to find each spot on your own, consider one of the following options.

While on your way must visit a Beverly Hills hotel, where you have a fair chance of seeing a celebrity.

So book your tour and set a reminder.

Each tour is about 2 hours as per our guesstimate in length and will cost equivalent to or between $40-$50 per person.

Some tours may offer a tier pricing format but others have a fixed rate.

The prices also vary as per the number of guests on your private tour. By private tour, we mean it's your immediate party and you.

SELF-GUIDED BEVERLY HILLS CELEBRITY HOMES TOUR

If you've decided to make your own trip through Beverly Hills, the following information should be pretty handy. This route will take over 2 hours.

We will start at Dean Martin's previous home since it is close to multiple local coffee shops like Alfred's or Kelly's Coffee & Fudge Factory. Grab a snack or beverage before your own guided tour to fuel you!

Use a smartphone to find your way to each address and discover the houses of celebrities both past and present.

Streets in the hills are notorious for twists and turns, so it is best to have a co-pilot helping with directing the driver.

Considering that many of these estates are located near busy streets, you may not be able to stop. Also, be kind.

People do live in most of these homes so be respectful.

While not a celebrity residence, many celebrities have set foot in this mansion.

This masterpiece had 55 rooms, stables, kennels, a tennis court, a swimming pool, and exquisite English-style gardens.

A tragic fate bestowed on Ned only 4 months after moving into the massive home, however. He was found dead with his friend Hugh Plunkett. It was ruled a murder-suicide though it remains mysterious to this day.

Today this mansion is a historic landmark, and museum and is still used for filming.

The building's resume is extensive. The Social Network, The Holiday, Young and the Restless, Spiderman, and Death Becomes Her , to name just a few.

61 Self-Guided Tours for Exploring L.A. on Your Own

While we stay safe at home we all need to remember to get up off the couch and move around a little — even if that means just venturing out and discovering something new within our own neighborhoods.

Fortunately, Los Angeles and its surrounding cities are chock full of secrets to uncover and histories that unfold before your very eyes — if you know where to look.

Oh, and if you can figure out what you’re actually looking at.

Fortunately, there are resources available right now that can provide that kind of guidance for you for FREE — no books to purchase, clubs to join or apps to download!

So whether you’re ready to safely embark on a local adventure on foot, by pedal or behind the wheel, here are 61 gratis self-guided tours you can take on your own terms.

1. Los Angeles Explorers Club, Downtown L.A.

Fletcher Bowron Square | Sandi Hemmerlein

Billed as providing “bicycle journeys into L.A.’s forgotten times,” the L.A. Explorers Club — not to be confused with the Adventurers Club — attempts to uncover the layers upon layers of history that have contributed to the Los Angeles we know and love today. In the pre-COVID pandemic days, you could grab a bike and join their merry band of urban adventurers for a curated ride themed around a historical event or other anchor to the diminishing past in L.A.’s streets.

In June, club founders Aimee Gilchrist and Brantlea Newbury were inspired by this era of social distancing and pivoted their explorations to be self-guided — though still designed to be taken by bike. The collection is growing — but start off with the guide to 19th-century Mexican L.A. created with Picturing Mexican America , called “Daily Life in Early L.A.”

This 14-mile round-trip two-wheeler trek is appropriate for all skill levels and comes with a downloadable route and audio guide — and can even be downloaded with GPS-enabled turn-by-turn directions. It starts and ends at Union Station — transporting you through downtown L.A.’s present-day Civic Center and Chinatown as well as farther south at Exposition Park. At each of the nine stops, the guide reveals the secret histories and forgotten stories of the early Los Angeles that once was — a Los Angeles that many Southern Californians don’t know existed.

2. los angeles conservancy, various locations.

Fine Arts Building | Sandi Hemmerlein

A preservation-minded and architecture-oriented nonprofit, the Los Angeles Conservancy is renowned for conducting regular walking tours of historic neighborhoods and landmarks that are led by well-trained volunteer docents (who are often historians themselves). While those are currently suspended — even the special tours usually held during summertime â€” the Conservancy has begun to offer virtual and self-guided tours .

Historic neighborhoods that can now can be explored with a tour booklet in hand include Chinatown, Koreatown, Pico-Union and downtown L.A., with additional tours themed around feature films shot in the city (“City Lights,”,“Safety Last!”), specific artists and architects (like Millard Sheets) and the lesser-known but significant era of the 1970s and ’80s in Venice, California.

The brochures are presented in a kind of choose-your-own-adventure style, many with thorough descriptions and map overviews marked with numbered stops that you can follow in any order you wish. Because they were created for previous L.A. Conservancy events, some of which occurred years ago, some information might be outdated as historic buildings get renovated, adaptively reused or even lost. But they will arm you with a lot more information than what you’d have going into any of these walks cold! Several activities were designed to engage the entire family — and Conservancy membership is not required to access any of the self-guided tours.

3. Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles, Various Locations

Adamson House | Sandi Hemmerlein

FORT: LA is an upstart organization created in 2018 to help locals and visitors alike appreciate and celebrate many of the residential homes that define Los Angeles streetscapes. While interior access to those homes is not possible right now, FORT: LA is facilitating the opportunity to venture outside of your own neighborhood by launching its self-guided “trails program” — including FORT Trails, whose routes have been written by experts (or “trailblazers”) in conservation, art and architecture, academics and more.

To read and download or print any of the three currently featured trail guides , you must provide your email address to sign up — and in return, you’ll receive thorough documentation as to the what, who, where and why of architecturally significant homes by such renowned architects as Richard and Dion Neutra, Stiles O. Clements, Rudolph Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright and even an array of postwar Japanese-American architects. Some original blueprints are even included along with information about ownership history and other details that aren’t always easy to get your hands on.

These self-guided tours can’t be completed on foot or by bike — as they embrace the sprawl of Los Angeles by pinpointing locations as far afield as Los Feliz to start and Malibu for the finish, a good 35 to 40 miles apart. So, you can either spend the entire day in your car following the route or simply chop it up into bite-sized pieces, tackling each locale region by region.

4. museum of neon art, various locations.

Vista Theatre | Sandi Hemmerlein

One of the highlights of those warm summer nights in Los Angeles is boarding the top deck of an open-air double decker bus to cruise past the city’s broad and diverse neon sign offerings, from theater marquees to apartment complex rooftop signs and even the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. But while the Museum of Neon Art’s Glendale location is temporarily closed and its Neon Cruises have ceased until it’s safe to resume them, you can still explore our neon wonderland — on foot or by bike or car — with MONA as your guide.

The newly debuted MONA Light Walks help you bask in lights that have lit the night through some of our darkest times in the City of Angels — with the same deep knowledge and wit as you’d get from having your own museum docent lead the way. Currently available guides include Glendale, East Hollywood and Koreatown in all their glowing brilliance. Expect to see neon that adorns the likes of a 1920s corset shop, a 1930s bar, a 1940s burger stand, a 1960s bowling alley, a 1980s oddities store and gallery and so much more.

And, until we can gather together again, MONA’s online shop is open for business — selling neon-themed face coverings among its wares, as well as gift certificates for future Neon Cruises .

5. Angels Walk Los Angeles, Various Locations

Victor Clothing Co. Mural by Eloy Torrez | Sandi Hemmerlein

Angels Walk L.A. is a nonprofit venture that coordinates with the City of Los Angeles and Metro to bring you face to face with some of the most historically and culturally rich places in Los Angeles — designed around Metro rail and bus lines.

Its self-guided historic walking trails of have been a fixture in the city since their inception in 1996 — now totaling 12 neighborhood routes , many of which are complemented by stanchions mounted on sidewalks at various points of interest (with more on the way).

For each walk, you can go online and download PDF guidebooks and maps, access custom digital maps, view photo previews of walk highlights, and even check out a sample stanchion design. You’ll be fully prepared to embark on your journey, with the added bonus of distances and average completion times listed and pointers on how to get there by public transportation.

The newest created walk is actually a 2-for-1 covering both East Hollywood and Silverlake — but legacy walks also take you to South L.A ., Northeast L.A. , Bunker Hill and elsewhere in downtown L.A. You’ll explore ethnic enclaves, artist colonies, cultural crossroads, moviemaking sites, LGBTQ history, commercial cores, and even some grandeur of a golden era. You could easily devote a couple of hours exploring significant people, architecture, and cultural movements on each of these walks — maybe even more, if you follow the recommended “Side Strolls” and/or “Farther Afield” sites.

6. Pasadena Visitors Center, Pasadena

Colorado Street Bridge | Sandi Hemmerlein

The City of Pasadena gets lots of tourists throughout the year — especially around New Year’s Day and the hubbub surrounding the Tournament of Roses bowl game and parade . While those large-scale events will be taking a break at the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021— and visitors won’t necessarily be traveling from outside the L.A. metro area — it presents the perfect opportunity to be a tourist in your own town and explore your own backyard.

The Pasadena Convention & Visitor Bureau has published a brochure that features no less than 10 individual Pasadena neighborhoods to tour on your own — each spotlighting landmark homes and buildings over the course of as little as 1.2 miles and as much as 4 miles. Explore the landmark district of Bungalow Heaven , whose Craftsman homes were built mostly in the first 20 years of the 20th century. Or head over to the historic Playhouse District, which gets its name from the official state theater of California, the Pasadena Playhouse .

Your options also include Pasadena’s oldest commercial area — a.k.a. “ Old Pasadena ,” a National Register Historic District — and a Victorian district (including “Millionaires’ Row”), as well as the neighborhood bordering the Arroyo Seco where you can peruse the exteriors of surviving Greene and Greene-designed homes (and not just The Gamble House ). In all, there are 16 historic districts covered within the city’s 23 square miles — all of which are accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists alike, with parking recommendations!

7. Santa Monica Conservancy, Santa Monica

Mayfair Residences at Santa Monica Beach | Sandi Hemmerlein

Santa Monica’s historic preservation organization, Santa Monica Conservancy, normally conducts popular docent-led walking tours of the city’s historic downtown on Saturdays at 10 a.m. for a mere $10 ($5 for members). In light of current restrictions, the walking tour brochures are currently available as a free download so you can still discover downtown Santa Monica’s culture, history and architecture. Only now, you can do it at your own pace and with plenty of safe distance.

Highlights of the “A Walk Through History” downtown tour include a lavish oceanside hotel, the restored façade of the area’s first theater, a former WWII-era military rehab center and so much more — including a guide to some of the city’s lost buildings. Explore ghost signs, vintage inscriptions, a historic Victorian dwelling, Art Deco delights and some hidden gems along the dense commercial district of Third Street Promenade.

You also have the opportunity to download an additional five walking tour guides from Santa Monica Conservancy — including those that cover a turn-of-the-century historic district just beyond the Promenade, the city’s southernmost tier (a.k.a. South Beach), part of the Palisades Tract that was annexed to Santa Monica in 1906) and more. All of these brochures are also available via a free transaction that requires an email address but no credit card. If you enjoy these tours, donations are gladly accepted on the website .

8. Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau, Beverly Hills

Spadena House | Sandi Hemmerlein

During the height of the tourist season — which is pretty much March through December — Beverly Hills can feel a bit overwhelming to visit. But just because the scene has calmed down dramatically over the last few months doesn’t mean Beverly Hills is closed as a destination. In fact, much of what there is to explore in this 5.7-square-mile city to the west is actually outdoors — and safely enjoyed with plenty of distance.

Take a tip from the folks at the visitor center, who’ve prepared walking guides that help reveal the storied past of this celebrity-studded enclave. By putting public art and gardens, architectural gems, iconic historical spots and the city’s diverse heritage in the spotlight, they go way beyond any stereotypical “stargazing”! Prepare to indulge in foodie favorites as you stroll through the Golden Triangle and more, past former celebrity haunts, staunch locals’ favorites and film locations galore. Some dining establishments may be temporarily closed, but you’ll find plenty of others for outdoor seating.

Many of the Beverly Hills municipal parking structures offer two hours free parking without validation — so park your car and get ready to walk your route of choice — be it themed for art and culture, history, movies or family activities. Each tour can easily be modified, depending on what you’re in the mood for and how much time you’ve got.

9. The Glendale Historical Society, Glendale

The Glendale Historical Society was formed in 1979 to save the Victorian-style Doctors House, which the organization saved from the wrecking ball, moved to Brand Park and restored. The house now operates as a museum . But over the course of the last four decades, the historical society has branched out to also host annual home tours, a film series at the Alex Theatre , insider tours of Forest Lawn Glendale and other themed walking tours .

Since March, all of the organization’s public outreach and educational activities have been postponed, canceled or moved to the digital world — but that doesn’t mean the only way to experience Glendale’s history is by sitting in front of the computer. You can learn the story of Glendale's history, growth and civic development — in person — by taking a self-guided tour of the city’s civic center, considered the “Historic Heart of Glendale.”

Some of the 20+ properties on the Glendale Civic Center Walking Tour are already listed on the Glendale Register of Historic Resources and/or the National Register of Historic Places — and many others are certainly worthy of local, state or national historic designation. While some date back even prior to the city’s founding in 1906, others reflect a more modern — or even Moderne — perspective from the mid-20th century. In addition to municipal buildings at the government center of Glendale, you’ll also have the chance to check out the exteriors of two of the city’s oldest houses, rare relics from its days as a subdivision tract of the former Rancho San Rafael.

Did a walking tour of LA (LA in a Day). Vicky started us off with the Hollywood tour & Damien (who is also the owner) was our guide for the rest of the day. The entire day was awesome, I suggest this tour. There isn’t that much walking, to be honest. It’s very fun!

Rodeo Drive & Beverly Hills Tour

Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour

Free/Zilch/Nada Just like the best things in life

2 miles An easy walking distance

Do it when it suits you Take as long as you like

Start this self-guided Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour at the storied Beverly Wilshire Hotel and stroll past the designer boutiques of the famous shopping district, then check out some high culture, before ending the tour at another famous hotel, the Beverly Hilton.

You can of course do this as a driving tour, but why bother? Park the car and go on foot – it's better. You'll see more and you can go into places.

Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour

BEVERLY WILSHIRE HOTEL

Where better to start your Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour than the “Regent Beverly Wilshire” (as it was known then) from  Pretty Woman . In addition to that movie it’s appeared in countless other films and way too many famous people have stayed to list them all, but  Elvis Presley ,  Warren Beatty  and  John Lennon  have all spent extended periods of time living here.

If you’re looking for the Beverly Hills experience this is it . It’s also at the bottom of Rodeo Drive, so it’s a great place to start the tour. Take a moment to sit in the café off the lobby and watch the world go by as you sip your drink. It's expensive, but so what? You’re in Beverly Hills baby!

RODEO DRIVE & ANDERTON COURT SHOPS

Now walk straight up  Rodeo Drive . These days it's seen as the premiere high-end shopping district, but it wasn’t always. Until the 1970’s it contained the usual stores you’d find on any Main Street back in those days. It was only then that the Rodeo Drive Committee decided to create a Mecca for the “culturally elite lifestyle.”

As you window-shop you’ll pass the  Anderton Court Shops  (on the right). They opened in 1952 and are the last buildings designed by celebrated architect  Frank Lloyd Wright  to be built in Los Angeles. By no means considered his most important buildings, they nevertheless bring an interesting aesthetic quality to the area, even though much of the original design has been changed.

If you’ve come here hoping to spot movie stars swanning around designer boutiques with decaf soy lattes you’re probably going to be disappointed – they don’t shop here. Nevertheless, iff seeing someone famous is high on your list of things to do in Los Angeles then check  our guide to guarantee seeing a ‘celebrity’ .

Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour

NATE N' AL'S DELI

Just a block from Rodeo Drive, is this  old-school Jewish Deli . Still sitting like Marley’s Ghost on N Beverly Drive, there are moves afoot to sell this Beverly Hills landmark – so pause your Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour for a moment here and get a(nother) coffee quick.

In spite of its location the menu is very reasonable and many of the waitresses have been working here since Nate N’ Al’s opened in 1945 (or at least it seems very possible that they have), bringing a lot of character to this fine establishment. Funnily enough this is one of the best places in Beverly Hills to actually spot a celebrity.

PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA

Culture may not have been something you were looking to get from your trip to Beverly Hills, but there is culture to be consumed here too – in this case popular culture.

The Paley Center  has a great program of events, including panels with the casts of popular TV shoes (see top photo), such as  Dear White People  and  Homicide: Life on the Streets , and exhibitions. Check the program before your visit, so you can make the most of it.

Paley Center

BEVERLY HILLS CITY HALL

Next stop on your Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour is this iconic Beverly Hills landmark. Beverly Hills City Hall  was the location of the Police Department in  Beverly Hills Cop  and it’s appeared in many other movies, as you’d expect.

Opened in 1932, the Los Angeles Times described it as the “largest and most expensive City Hall of any municipality its size in the country.” Well, it is Beverly Hills after all!

The design is Churrigeresque  (or Spanish Revival), which was all the rage back then and it’s a beautiful building.

WALLIS ANNENBERG FOUNDATION

This building was once the Beverly Hills Post Office (opening in 1934), but it was deemed surplus to requirements in 1993 and in 2013 reopened as  a performing arts venue .

They have some important productions, with heavyweight actors (such as Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville in  Long Day’s Journey into Night  by Eugene O’Neill in June 2018) as well as dance and other events. Check it out!

Wallis Annenberg Foundation

BEVERLY GARDENS PARK

This is a beautiful spot to take a breather on your Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour and take everything in – right in the heart of Beverly Hills.

The gardens  stretch for 22 blocks (nearly 2 miles) along Santa Monica Boulevard and you can walk through the park all the way to the Beverly Hilton (the next stop on the tour). Also the Beverly Hills sign here could almost have been made for Instagram – it’s going to go viral!

THE BEVERLY HILTON

Finish your Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills tour at another hotel, the famous  Beverly Hilton . The hotel opened in 1955 and has hosted the annual Golden Globes (the ever so slightly less glamorous sister of the Academy Awards) every year since 1961.

Tragedy struck here in 2014, when  Whitney Houston  was found dead in the bath in her suite, but on a brighter note several stars have been discovered lounging around the pool. Although the Beverly Hills Hotel pool is better known for launching stars’ careers ( Raquel Welch  is probably the most famous star discovery there), that doesn’t mean you can’t give it a shot.

So throw on the Speedos, or bikini, and dive in. You’re in Beverly Hills, home of the stars!

Beverly Hilton

“We really enjoyed our special tour of celebrity homes on Monday. Thanks to your site Tucker from Velvet Ropes we actually got to see Justin Beiber playing baseball in his cul d sac! My 20 year old daughter was shaking when we saw him!! It was so cool to be able to see celebrity homes on our own pace and without paying the expensive prices of a tour bus!!” – Sally K.

“Took my girls on this tour and they were beside themselves when we got to Justin Bieber’s house. Great experience!” – Bryan P.

“Super convenient so we didn’t have to get on one of the buses, but wish the celebs weren’t so good at hiding their homes with huge hedges.” – Anonymous

Jessica loves two things most in this world; celebrities and her dog. She can be seen walking along Venice Beach with her yellow lab mix in tow, staring off into the sky hoping that looking uninterested and deep will get her discovered. She may or may not have followed Justin Timberlake's every move back in the day but now she is content to write out her obsession for Velvet Ropes along with ghost writing novels about celebrity romance. Jessica recently decided to bring her passions to Twitter. When she's not busy writing and making plans for her celebrity life after being discovered, you can find her there.

One Day Los Angeles Self-Driving Tour

TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma

What should you do in LA if you only have 1 day to spend? This one-day driving tour will give you a glimpse of the top LA sights from Hollywood to Venice Beach. It assumes you have your own car or a rental car for the day. If it's summer, start in Hollywood to end up in Venice for sunset on the beach. If it's winter and the sun is setting at 4 pm, do the tour in reverse and start at the beach, ending in Hollywood after dark.

If you don't have a car available, you can also book a Hop On-Hop Off City Sightseeing Tour to visit most of the same locations without the driving.

If you don't get out of the car, the drive alone takes about 1 and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic, but you can get out and take a look at many different stops and still do this route in a day.

So let's get started exploring Hollywood!

Walking Around Hollywood & Highland

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

We wouldn't necessarily recommend staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, but it's worth taking a look inside at this historic Hollywood landmark, and it makes a good starting reference.

Start your morning with breakfast at Mel's Drive-In , one block east on Highland just south of Hollywood Blvd , or grab a bagel at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf across from the hotel, then cross the street to compare your hand and footprints to your favorite stars in the forecourt at TCL (Grauman's) Chinese Theatre . Not much in the Hollywood & Highland shopping center next door will be open before 10 or 11 a.m., but walk across the front of the complex past the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held to the staircase leading up to the Babylon Courtyard . Don't forget to look down at the Hollywood Walk of Fame as you're walking to see if your favorite entertainers' stars are on this block.

You can take the escalator up to the Babylon Courtyard, but then you won't get a chance to admire how the architects managed to frame a view of the Hollywood Sign as you ascend the center of the staircase. The Courtyard itself looks like a Hollywood set with giant elephant sculptures perched high above the three-level ring of shops. Make your way up to the viewing bridges at the back of the courtyard via stairways or escalators on either side for your photo opportunity with the Hollywood Sign and Hollywood Hills as a backdrop. You can also see the Hollywood Methodist Church with its red ribbon painted on the tower. In the 1943 movie War of the Worlds, terrified citizens took refuge in this church from attacking aliens.

Driving Through Hollywood

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Head back to your car and drive east on Hollywood Blvd, past some of Hollywood's other landmarks. The El Capitan Theatre and Disney Entertainment Center opposite Hollywood & Highland was restored by the Disney Company to its previous glory. The Jimmy Kimmel Live! show is taped in the Entertainment Center, while Disney films are screened at next door El Capitan with pre-show visits by costumed movie characters. The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Disney Studio Store shares the building.

On the next block, next to the dinosaur-topped Ripley's Believe It or Not , just down Highland, you can see the pink and green art deco façade of the original Max Factor factory, which now houses the Hollywood Museum . Continuing east, on your right you will pass the American Cinematheque at the historic Egyptian Theatre and the Art Deco Hollywood icon that was originally Kress Department store. It spent a long time as Frederick’s of Hollywood before being converted to a short-lived restaurant and nightclub. Hollywood's oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank Grill will be on your left.

At Hollywood and Vine, you can look for metered street parking to stop and take a photo of the circular tower of the Capitol Records building, the Hollywood and Vine signs and sky trackers and another view of the Hollywood Sign or you can look left at them as you turn right down Vine Street. Either way, when you're ready, head south (away from the hills) on Vine Street, then turn right on Sunset Boulevard. The half-golf-ball Cinerama Dome is on your left. Amoeba Music, at Ivar, is THE place to shop for hard-to-find music including a vast collection of recordings on vinyl and tape.

Following are two different routes to take you west to the ocean, depending on what you would like to see.

  • Route A takes you west by Museum Row on the Miracle Mile and the La Brea Tar Pits , if you're interested in pre-historic saber tooth cats and mammoths.
  • Route B is west via the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood .

Route A via the La Brea Tar Pits and the Museum Mile

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Continue down Sunset to La Brea. Turn left on La Brea until you get to Wilshire (about 2 miles). Turn right on Wilshire. You're entering the Museum Row on the Miracle Mile, which includes the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the striking Petersen Automotive Museum - whose shiny steal ribbons over red surface look like a car rounding the corner from across the street - and the many buildings of the LA County Museum of Art .

As you pass Curson, look for metered parking on the right in front of Hancock Park near the Page Museum and the La Brea Tar Pits. If there is no parking available on Wilshire, turn right on Fairfax and right on 6th Street to park on the other side of the park or park in one of the pay lots. There are entrance gates from 6th Street and from Wilshire, but the biggest tar pits are near the Wilshire entrance.

Take a quick stroll through the park to see these active tar pits where more pre-historic fossils have been discovered than anyplace else on earth. Active excavations are underway and there are daily tours of the current excavation pit at 1 p.m. Fossils from these pits have found their way into museums all over the world, but the largest collection is here at the Page Museum.

Optional Detour:  If you're ready for lunch head up Fairfax to 3rd Street to the LA Farmer's Market to grab a bite at one of the many food vendors in this permanent market building. If you finish lunch quickly, you might have time to stroll next door for some shopping or celebrity spotting at The Grove .

Continue west on Wilshire to Rodeo Drive .

Route B via West Hollywood

Instead of turning left at La Brea, continue on Sunset through West Hollywood on the famed Sunset Strip. You'll pass the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory where many famous comics got their start. You'll also pass some of LA's most revered live rock n' roll venues, the Viper Room , the Whiskey A-Go-Go , and the Roxy. West Hollywood usually has an interesting collection of quirky billboards soaring above the sidewalk cafes, bars and shops that line the streets.

Entering Beverly Hills , Sunset becomes a windy road with green hedges and trees blocking your view of most of the mansions tucked behind them. You'll pass the famed Beverly Hills Hotel on the right. You can turn left off of Sunset for a detour down famed Rodeo Drive which is at a 6-way intersection crossing Sunset at the same place as CaĂąon Drive.

Continue down Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive on the 1 Day LA Tour

From Sunset, turn left and proceed through several blocks of well-groomed mansions before you arrive at the short stretch of high-end designer boutiques recognized around the world. Rodeo Drive dead ends into the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wilshire Blvd. You can either go around the block and go back up to Sunset or turn right on Wilshire and head west toward the Beach.

If you're already on Wilshire, continue West to Rodeo Drive, which only goes to the right. Metered parking is available on Rodeo and surrounding streets, and some parking structures have an hour or 2 of free parking if you want to get out and walk around.

The designer shops only occupy three blocks, then Rodeo becomes a wide boulevard passing through a Beverly Hills neighborhood of multi-million-dollar mansions all the way back up to Sunset Blvd. Turn Left on Sunset heading west.

Sunset is a winding green route to the beach. Wilshire is an urban landscape of retail and commercial buildings with a green stretch through the L.A. Country Club.

If you want to take the Wilshire route, turn right at the Sunset 6-way intersection down CaĂąon Drive, then veer right at the next block on Beverly Drive, just to give you a different view back down to Wilshire, where you’ll turn right and pass Rodeo Drive again on your way to  the beach .

If you're in any kind of a hurry, the Wilshire route is usually slower, but they'll both be pretty leisurely.

To Santa Monica via Sunset Boulevard

If you take Sunset, you'll drive by UCLA on the left. You can detour through campus if you're interested. It's a beautiful campus. Beyond UCLA, after you pass Will Rogers State Historic Park veer left on Chautauqua as Sunset veers right. (If you miss Chautauqua, Sunset goes all the way to the beach, but it will add several additional curvy miles to the route.) Chautauqua will take you down to the ocean, where you will turn left on Pacific Coast Highway (known locally as PCH). PCH is a limited-access highway as it comes into Santa Monica . Take a slight left from PCH onto California Incline, which is basically a left-exiting off-ramp from PCH to Ocean Blvd, where you will turn right for a few blocks before turning left on Broadway and right into the parking structure adjacent to the Santa Monica Place Mall. Alternately, if you miss California Incline, you can   stay in the right lane and follow the signs to take the middle exit on Moomat Ahiko Way (as PCH turns left and Appian Way goes straight), then turn left on Ocean and right on Broadway to the parking structure. If you miss the curve and end up on Appian Way, take the next left up to Ocean.

Be sure to stay right and NOT follow the Pacific Coast Highway or you'll end up on the freeway. If that does happen, take the first exit, Lincoln, turn left on Lincoln back to Colorado Ave, then take a left back to the beach. The parking structure will be on your right after 4th street.

Parking structures 7 and 8 adjacent to the mall have free 90-minute parking, $1 for the next hour and $1.50 per 30 minutes after that. The lower floors are 3 hours only.  A few other downtown lots have the same rates. There is also parking at the Civic Center, or there are multiple pay lots at the beach and short-term metered street parking.

To Santa Monica via Wilshire

Take Wilshire through Beverly Hills and Century City, into Santa Monica to 4th Street; turn left on 4th. Turn Right on Broadway and left into the Santa Monica Place parking structure.

Alternately, if you're running late and it's not rush hour, you can take Wilshire to the 405 Freeway South, exit to the 10 Freeway west, exit 4th Street at the end of the freeway. Follow the sign for 4th Street, then turn left off of 4th onto Broadway and into the parking structure.

Exploring Santa Monica

Parking is free in the Santa Monica Place parking structure for the first 90 minutes, as are other city parking structures in the vicinity. If you are in need of a restroom, there are public restrooms at the shopping center.

From Santa Monica Place or the parking structure, exit on foot toward Broadway and the Third Street Promenade.

If you want to visit the Pier, turn left and walk down Broadway to Ocean. The Pier is one more block to the left at Colorado. The Santa Monica Pier has a Carousel, a solar-powered Ferris Wheel, a small roller coaster and a couple other rides at Pacific Park , as well as the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, a Trapeze School, a fast food court and restaurants and some gift shops - and of course, a great view of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Beach . There are summer concerts held on Thursdays at the foot of the pier adjacent to the on-pier parking lot.

Third Street Promenade is lined with shops and restaurants and usually has an array of street performers, especially during summer and on weekends and evenings the rest of the year. For some budget designer snacks, head upstairs at the food court at 1315 Third Street Promenade and try a Wolfgang Puck Pizza. It's only budget compared to dining at Wolfgang Puck's other Santa Monica establishment, Chinois on Main.

You can download this Walking Map of the Third Street Promenade .

Venice Beach

Retrieve your car from the parking structure at Santa Monica Place and make your way around the block to where Main Street starts on the other side of the Mall. Main Street will take you through an area of shops, galleries and restaurants as you cross over into Venice Beach . Proceed to the traffic circle at Windward and look for a reasonable place to park. There are a variety of parking lots in the neighborhood with prices ranging from $3 to $15 depending on the day and season. In the off-season, you may find street parking. If you're stopping for less than an hour, you may score a spot right there on Windward right by the beach. Don't forget to note your space and pay at the pay station mid-block.

From Windward, walk to the right, down the boardwalk between the vendor stalls and the street performers past the outdoor gym at “Muscle Beach.” Walk about 7 short blocks to watch the sunset over a casual dinner at the Sidewalk Café. If you're all walked out already, there's a parking lot off the alley behind the Sidewalk Café just off of Clubhouse Ct. For those on an even tighter budget, grab a slice of pizza or a sausage sandwich at one of the Venice Beach snack bars and find a spot on a bench or a nice stretch of sand to enjoy the view. Bring a sweater or jacket. The beach is cool in the evening, even in summer.

After dinner, you're close to the airport if you've got a red-eye flight to catch, or you can deadhead back to Hollywood and grab a drink at one of the Roosevelt's 6 bars or restaurants.

If you're still standing, head out to one of LA's Top Dance Clubs or Comedy Clubs .
