STRESS-FREE TRAVEL: 15 Best Group Travel Companies for Guided Tours in 2024

1. Trafalgar Tours

An older couple take a break from hiking to enjoy coffee on a Utah outlook overlooking a canyon. They are sitting on camp stools close to the edge. They are both holding coffee mugs and she is smiling at the camera.

One of the oldest and most respected names in group travel, Trafalgar Tours has logged more than 75 years in the travel business and offers a wide variety of destinations and travel styles: guided tours, river cruising, next-gen and family tours , luxury and customized private tours, and safari and adventure travel.

Trafalgar’s “Be My Guest” experiences allow you to visit and dine with local families in homes, farms, and restaurants. “Mini-stays” of three to five days appeal to the busy traveler or to those who want an “add-on” to a longer tour or stay. “At Leisure” trips have a relaxed pace, longer stays at each accommodation, and later starts in the mornings.

FAR AND WIDE: 10 Best Trafalgar Tours to Take in 2024

Because Trafalgar’s customer base is international, tour participants are likely to be English-speaking citizens of a variety of countries—a plus for North Americans who would enjoy traveling with people from all over the globe. A travel director accompanies each tour group and coordinates with local tour guides at each destination. Many of the travel directors have five years’ experience or more.

Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Optional experiences on each tour cost extra but also offer the flexibility to create your own custom tour: You may opt out of the activity and choose to do something else—or just relax.

THE SCOOP: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours Before You Book

Trafalgar is the anchor brand of The Travel Corporation (TTC), which comprises 42 travel brands, including tour operations that specialize in different destinations, age groups, price range, and travel styles. For example, the CostSaver brand is very inexpensive, while  Insight Vacations  is a premium tour company, and  Luxury Gold  is TTC’s high-end tour company.

2. Tauck Tours

Tauck Tours, a popular tour company for seniors, private, after-hours visit inside the Sistine Chape

Tauck Tours offers deluxe and highly inclusive tours to more than 100 destinations on all seven continents. With nearly 100 years in the tour business, Tauck prides itself on quality and on the experience of its Tour Directors, who come from 40 countries and average 10 years of experience. The hotels it selects are always excellent and well-located.

Tauck aims to appeal to people of all ages by offering land journeys, European river cruises, small ship ocean cruises, and multi-generational “Tauck Bridges” family travel. Each tour has ratings for activity level and pace (rated one through four), but, like many tour companies, Tauck warns that travelers with mobility issues must bring their own assistance.

ACTIVE TRAVEL:   5 Best Senior Adventures for Travelers Age 50+

Seniors who prefer to have the majority of their experience planned for them will appreciate the full itineraries and the many included meals in fine hotels and restaurants. With individual excursions included rather than optional, Tauck travelers are encouraged to try experiences (e.g., a raft trip or a helicopter ride) they might not otherwise have considered.

Tauck promises to “manage the unexpected—big and small,” with its Global Response Team, a comprehensive support system that takes care of all details, including such exigencies as accidents and quarantines.  The company has a frequent traveler savings program and offers some savings for solo travelers on selected journeys.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Tauck Tours

3. Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)

view of fishing village on an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), part of the Grand Circle Corporation since 1978, focuses on active travelers over 50 who are looking for hands-on experiences in destinations around the world. The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

Quick Facts about Over-50 Tours with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)

  • Average group size: Small-group land tours have no more than 16 travelers; small-ship adventures have no more than 25 participants.

  • Destinations: 76 countries on six continents; no tours in North America
  • How to book: Directly through OAT

4. Road Scholar

senior trip tours

Road Scholar is a senior travel tour company that emphasizes lifelong learning and educational travel for older travelers. Founded in 1975 as the nonprofit Elderhostel, the organization changed its name in 2010 and now provides study tours throughout the U.S., Canada, and in more than 100 other countries. All of its senior-focused tours include guidance and lectures by Road Scholar faculty who are experts on topics relevant to the destination. Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. The “Choose Your Pace” feature allows you to choose among multiple options of tour length, challenge, and pace. Extended-stay programs range from eight days in Florence to 45 days in southern Spain.

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks that other tour companies charge extra for.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, most meals, tips, excursions, expert lectures (in addition to your tour director), and airport transfers if you book flights through Road Scholar.

  • Primary audience: Lifelong learners over the age of 50.
  • Destinations: Road Scholar’s senior tours cover all 50 U.S. states as well as 100 countries on all continents; the emphasis is on North America.
  • How to Book: Directly through Road Scholar ; via Travelstride , a tour specialist OTA that offers more than 1,500 Road Scholar trips; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

5. Smithsonian Journeys

Like Road Scholar, Smithsonian Journeys is a group travel company for seniors that focuses on educational travel. It offers specialized land journeys, active outdoor journeys, small ship cruises, and cultural stays. At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. Tours include culturally immersive experiences like visits to homes, meals with locals, and demonstrations of local crafts and cuisines. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) Smithsonian’s five activity level ratings are somewhat more demanding than Road Scholar’s, ranging from “Easy” (easy walking and shorter travel days) to “Challenging” (e.g., climbing Kilimanjaro).

Quick Facts about Senior Tours with Smithsonian Journeys

  • Average group size: 12 to 24 people for most land journeys; cruises from 36 people (river boat) to 264 (small ship cruise).
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks.
  • What’s included: Excellent accommodations, most meals, most tips, excursions, experts and lectures, and airport transfers. Some itineraries also offer airfare-inclusive pricing
  • What’s not included: Some meals and some tips.
  • Primary audience: Travelers 45 to 80 years old who want to better understand the world.
  • Destinations: 130 itineraries on seven continents (with an emphasis on Europe).
  • How to Book: Directly through Smithsonian Journeys or through a travel agent such as AAA .

Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours for Older Travelers with Globus

  • Average group size: 24 people (small-group discovery) to 36 people (average size of a coach tour).
  • Price range: Inexpensive, but optional excursions cost extra.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, some meals, airport transfers on published tour departure and return dates, and admission to sites included in tour.
  • What’s not included: Optional experiences (may be $50 to $100 each), tips, and some meals.
  • Primary audience: Adults who want a wide variety of travel options.
  • Destinations: More than 50 countries on six continents.
  • How to Book: Directly through Globus ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar , all which are tour specialist OTAs; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

7. Intrepid Travel

Founded in 1988 in Australia and now employee-owned, Intrepid Travel offers 1,100 escorted tours worldwide, with an average of 10 travelers per tour. The company focuses on small group active trips off the beaten track. Its tours often use public transportation and stay at locally owned accommodations.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. A “Comfort” trip to Jordan might include some moderate hiking to sites, floating in the Dead Sea, a stay in a desert camp, and snorkeling in the Red Sea. Intrepid also offers small ship adventure cruising to such places as the Galapagos Island, the Greek and Turkish Islands, Antarctica, and French Polynesia.

Intrepid conducts safety assessments of all included and optional activities; experienced local leaders provide instruction and advice to travelers who are new to an activity or area. It also has an excellent record of corporate responsibility. Intrepid focuses on sustainable travel and has been carbon neutral since 2010.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours with Intrepid Travel

  • Average group size: 10 people.
  • Price range: Moderately inexpensive but extra cost for premium upgrades.

8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

Quick Facts about Cruises for Seniors with Viking

  • Passenger limit on river boats: 190 people  (up to 930 on ocean ships)
  • Price range: Moderately expensive but inclusive.
  • What’s included: Onboard accommodations, meals, shore excursions, entertainment, tips; and transfers with air purchase through Viking. Some tours also include free international airfare.
  • What’s not included: Transfers and porterage for those not using Viking for air reservations, some tips.
  • Primary audience: Adults, but primarily older adults.
  • Destinations: Mostly Europe for river tours, also cruises on the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong Rivers; expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Great Lakes; ocean cruises to various destinations.
  • How to Book: Directly through Viking ; via CruiseCritic ; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

What people love about North America Tours for Seniors

Most Amazing Family Vacation Ever! The 7-day private tour of the Southwest National Parks (hotel version) Hard to put into words but this was the perfect way for our family to experience the dramatic sites and cultural experiences of the southwest National Parks! We had the most amazing tour guide (Thanks Marie!) and the agenda was the right balance of keeping us engaged while covering so much ground. Each National Park had its own unique and wonderful qualities and this 7-day tour gave us just enough time to soak up the natural beauty. Also, there are hikes and tours for all ages (we let the boys take on the more difficult hikes while Mom and Dad took the more accessible routes. The pick up and drop off in Las Vegas was very convenient and allowed us just enough time to enjoy a few nights in Las Vegas. Would HIGHLY recommend!
We real enjoyed our time away.
The 7-day Southwest Highlights tour was amazing! Alex and Amber were terrific guides that helped to give us options to make the most of our time at each tour stop. They also took care of setting up camp most days and prepared great meals throughout the trip. The trip was well organized, and we stopped often during the drive. I recommend this tour to people who want an active vacation, checking a number of National Parks off their list, but don't want to do all of the research needed to make it happen.

Philippines.

New Tour Date Added!

The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, in southeastern Asia between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Its extensive coastline are dotted with white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters that are teeming with marine life, corals and lush foliage.

For 2 nights we'll enjoy the 'castaway camping experience' on a pristine island where we sleep under the stars in our individual mesh tents. Our trip concludes in the paradise of Busuanga, with its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, dense rainforests, mangrove swamps and the crystal-clear lakes.  ElderTreks 28-day tour of the Philippines offers perhaps the most in-depth experience of this incredibly beautiful, exotic and diverse country.  Click here   for more information!

Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Annapurna, Lhotse - these names have captured the imagination of adventurers for over a century. Nepal may be known for having the planet's highest peaks but it is also graced with beautiful terraced hillsides, raging rivers, and vibrant green lowland jungles. These extraordinary natural features are complemented by the gracious welcome of the people of this Himalayan kingdom. Our adventure highlights the cultural and natural features of Nepal. Marvel at Durbar Square with its 1000-year old wooden buildings and take in the burning ghats at Pashupatinath. Explore Kathmandu's smaller, more intimate sister city, Patan, and walk through the ancient streets of the restored capital of Bhaktapur. Papua New Guinea

senior trip tours

Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally interesting places on Earth, with many of its tribal people following a traditional lifestyle. This adventure has been designed to experience the villages and people of Papua New Guinea. In order to do this, we visit a number of local villages and we have 2 overnights in one village. There are overnight stays where the accommodation is very basic; it can be dormitory style and have no fans/air conditioning and very limited facilities. As much of the interior of the country has no roads or impassable ones, we maximize our time by flying from location to location and flight schedules frequently change. While we endeavor to do/see everything listed in the itinerary, it is common for changes to occur to the itinerary for things that are beyond our control. Traveler must be prepared for changes to this program, either before your journey starts or during the trip itself.   Click here  for more information!

Albania, Macedonia & Bulgaria

Welcome to Old Europe - remote, unexploited and unspoiled. With cobblestone streets, Roman ruins, cosmopolitan cities, quaint towns, medieval monasteries and castles, UNESCO sites and pristine nature.  Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania are easily some of Europe's last, mostly unexplored gems. We also visit Kosovo, the youngest country of Europe, and Corfu (Greece).  After exploring the 5,000 year old cosmopolitan capital city Sofia, with its wide boulevards and grand churches, we travel to the city of Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest cities. Visit Asenovgrad Castle, a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains. Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania offer the perfect off-the-beaten track adventure in seldom traveled Eastern Europe.   Click here  for more information!

What to Look for in a Senior Travel Group

When searching for a senior travel group, consider the following key factors to ensure an enjoyable and fulfilling travel experience.

Itinerary and Destinations

Look for a travel group that offers diverse and well-planned itineraries to destinations that align with your interests and preferences, whether it’s cultural exploration, nature-focused trips, or a mix of both.

Check the group size to ensure it is comfortable for you. Smaller groups often allow for more personalized experiences and flexibility during the trip.

Travel Pace and Physical Requirements

Assess the travel pace and physical demands of the trips offered to ensure they match your fitness level and mobility needs.

Tour Guides and Expertise

Review the credentials and experience of the tour guides leading the trips, as knowledgeable guides can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Accommodations

Check the quality and suitability of accommodations provided during the trip to ensure they meet your comfort standards.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check the package details to understand what’s included (e.g., meals, activities, entrance fees) and what additional expenses you might need to budget for.

Group Dynamics and Social Activities

Consider the social aspect of the travel group, as meeting like-minded individuals can greatly enhance your journey, so look for groups that offer ample opportunities for group interactions and social activities.

Customer Reviews and Testimonials

Read reviews and testimonials from previous travelers to gauge their satisfaction and overall experience with the travel group.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a senior travel group that aligns with your interests, preferences, and requirements, making your journey a memorable and enjoyable one.

OAT will not work with your travel agent. You have to make all your own bookings and if there is a problem, you most likely will call and get a different person every time.

I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

Best Senior Travel Destinations in 2024

amie-clark

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. For more details on what any of these parks can offer in the way of accommodations, tours, classes, and other recreational activities, check out the National Park Service website. Also, be sure to look into the national park pass for seniors .

Biking in Badlands National Park

2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Sedona's Cathedral Rock at Sunset

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

Alaskan Coastline

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. Keep in mind that there are those who say the best time to visit this lovely, sunny city is from September to November when the temperatures are most comfortable for the majority of folks. No matter when you go, though, take your sunscreen.

The Best Months to Travel in the Best Years of Your Life

Are you thinking about a late summer vacation? You should be! There are so many wonderful reasons to take a vacation in August, September, or October. As a senior living out your retirement, you are no longer burdened with a work rigid schedule or the challenges that come with back-to-school activities. Take advantage of your freedom and read about the perks of taking a late summer vacation!

August: The World Is Calling

A cost-effective way to check off “exotic world travel” from your bucket list is to book your dream vacation for mid-to-late August. Prices start to drop as tourists head home.

While the Mediterranean countries are still basking in the hot sun, the Scandinavian countries, with their comfortable temperatures and Northern Lights, make memorable travel destinations.

August is the vacation month for many Europeans, so crowds on the streets of Paris and London start thinning. Europe offers a wealth of urban delights such as Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary, or Vienna in Austria. Since you have the luxury of leisure, instead of a hectic tour of 10 cities in 10 days, pick one spectacular location and savor the sights. Linger in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy a less demanding itinerary.

Closer to home, golfers and anglers will find the mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England abound with the top-rated greens, fast-moving streams, and quaint little towns.

Splurge with an overnight at a local B&B or a couple’s day at a spa. The latest trend in B&B hospitality includes fresh-from-the-garden meals.

With no school groups to crowd your view, enjoy the exhibits at local museums, historic homes, or gardens. Some of the best reasons to retire to Pennsylvania are also the best reasons to visit! Imagine exploring your nation’s birthplace without fighting traffic and waiting in line with other summertime tourists.

Check out end-of-the-season group rentals. Beaches and lakes make an inviting girls-only trip.

Travel Tip #1: Be sure to wear flats on cobblestone streets. Use the hotel safe for your valuables, passport, etc.

September: Water Temperatures Are Ideal, Crowds Have Checked Out

September may be the perfect month to head to the beach, as temperatures, crowds, and lodging prices all tend to start dropping around this time of year. Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

If you find that you like off-season vacation-style living, you may want to check out Acts Retirement’s 10 Reasons to Retire to South Carolina. Here’s a hint, southern-style hospitality combined with coastal views tends to make people very happy.

Take a drive or bus ride through the countryside before the leaf peepers jam the roads. Don’t miss the antique stores and roadside produce stands along the way. Local apple orchards often include a taste of fresh-made cider, slices of apple pie, and bags of your favorite Macs (not the computer!).

Bring back childhood memories with a trip to a country fair. Take a selfie with a prize-winning sheep, thrill to the roar of tractor pulls, or enjoy a nostalgic ride on a merry-go-round. Of course, you’ll ruin your diet with the pleasure of sampling funnel cakes, sausage smothered in onions and peppers, and cotton candy. But what are vacations for if not letting loose and enjoying life?

Organize your own bus trip. Limousine rental companies welcome mini-bus or six-passenger town car rentals during the week. Gather a group of history buffs, art lovers, or other like-minded day-trippers and split the rental. You are the masters of your travel itinerary and can stop along the way at cute stores and eateries.

Travel Tip #2: Leave your expensive jewelry at home.

October: Harvest Celebrations Abound

October brings harvest season, Octoberfest merriment, and dozens of other reasons to get out of the recliner. Check your local newspaper for all the Fall events in your area or enjoy a vacation filled with crisp autumn sights, sounds, and smells.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Senior Safety Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to tell your innkeeper or hotel concierge your itinerary. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Keep a cell phone on you at all times, along with your hotel and family contact information.

Retirement should be some of the best years of your life! Open yourself up to new experiences and new possibilities. You’ve worked to build the world we live in, now it’s time to pick your head up and experience it.

American Retirees Flock to This International Destination — and It's Got Great Health Care, Low Taxes, and High Quality of Life

Hint: it’s in Europe.

Retiring abroad is trending among senior Americans. According to the Social Security Administration, the number of U.S. citizens receiving their benefits abroad has risen from 413,000 to 760,000 in three years , and 38 percent of them relocated to Europe.

But a new report gives more clarity on where Americans can go for the best health care, quality of life, and security. According to Global Citizen Solutions, a visa and relocation consulting company, Spain and Portugal are the most popular retirement destinations among senior U.S. citizens.

Spain scored a perfect 100 out of 100 for quality of life, which was assessed based on factors like health care, climate, and flight accessibility.

"With a public health care system and affordable supplementary private insurance options, Spain prioritizes the well-being of its residents, a key factor that entices retirees to relocate," Laura Madrid, research lead at Global Citizen Solutions, told Travel + Leisure . "Moreover, Spain offers an excellent public transportation network, known for its efficiency and affordability a plus for retirees ditching the daily use of private cars."

Portugal is a very close second with 99.79 points in the overall rankings. The report notes that in recent years, many Americans have settled in both countries for sunny weather and access to affordable health care.

“A lower cost of living is also an important factor in the decision to relocate, with living expenses in Spain and Portugal being considerably lower compared to other European nations and the U.S. Moreover, both nations offer special tax regimes for expatriates during their initial years of residence, making the Iberian Peninsula even more appealing,” the report states.

In the overall ranking, Costa Rica is third, and Uruguay and Mexico are fourth and fifth, respectively.

However, a slightly different picture emerges in the quality of life category, where our southern neighbor takes the silver medal, and Portugal drops one spot to No. 3. The winner in the economics category, which measured factors like cost of living, tax optimization, and rent prices, is Malaysia, which offers foreigners financial incentives like no tax on foreign-sourced income. (Americans living abroad still need to pay taxes in the U.S.)

When it comes to social factors like migrant acceptance and integration, the top retirement destination is New Zealand.

The report also identified the leading factors for retiring abroad. Affordable housing options, quality health care, and tax incentives are the top three motivators for seniors when choosing to retire in a foreign country. An increasing number of adults also opt to spend their golden years outside the borders of our country to acquire a second citizenship “as a strategic insurance plan,” according to the report.

Top Travel Insurance for Seniors Comparison

Your health gets more unpredictable as you age, which makes travel insurance more important for seniors. Unfortunately, it's also more expensive. The best travel insurance for seniors won't have too steep of a price hike compared to rates for younger travelers. It will have high coverage limits for emergency medical coverage, trip cancellations, and and emergency medical evacuation. It's also important that your travel insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers , ideally at no extra cost to the traveler.

Here are our picks for the best travel insurance coverage for seniors in 2024.

Understanding Travel Insurance for Seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.
  • Pre-existing condition coverage:  Can mean two different things: coverage for trip cancellations as a result of pre-existing conditions or medical expenses as a result of pre-existing conditions. Either way, policy must be purchased within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two or three weeks.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

When you purchase a travel insurance policy, you'll be able to see a description of benefits, which is a long document that describes the exceptions and limitations to your coverage. You should carefully review this document so you're not blindsided by unexpected claim denials.

For example, if you're canceling a trip because unexpected work, you may not be eligible for coverage if you haven't worked at your company for long enough. Additionally, you should review your policy to ensure that your pre-existing condition is covered, as companies often have very specific language around what qualifies as a covered pre-existing condition.

Emergency assistance services

Most companies offer a 24/7 concierge service that can help you navigate situations that arise during your trip, even issues beyond the scope of your policy. They can advise you on how to navigate these situations in accordance with your policy and make sure you acquire the necessary documentation when you need to file a claim down the line.

How to Pick Travel Insurance as a Senior Traveler

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Pre-existing conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers pre-existing conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover pre-existing conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Senior Travel Insurance

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers and how much coverage you receive. We also looked at the age limits for a company's policy.
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions: Pre-existing conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

Best Senior Travel Insurance FAQs

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for pre-existing conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

When it comes to saving money on senior travel insurance, you should only be covering the services that you need. For example, if your plane ticket and hotel stay are refundable, there's no need to purchase trip cancellation.

All travel insurance companies included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

The best travel insurance for seniors is Allianz due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

Most travel insurance companies will have an age limit, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger. However, many of the insurance companies in our guide have higher limits or no age limit at all.

Six U.S. Senior Open Players Enjoying Newport C.C. Reunion

During his halcyon days on the PGA Tour, Craig Barlow would often sneak away on the Wednesday before the Travelers Championship (formerly Greater Hartford Open) and make the two-hour-plus drive to Newport Country Club.

While that might seem like an odd detour, the historic venue was a layout the Henderson, Nev., native first fell in love with as a competitor in the 1995 U.S. Amateur because it reminded him of his favorite place on the planet, Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Fellow tour pro and Newport member P.H. Horgan III was his conduit to playing this private enclave and Barlow never could get enough.

Yes, the course was special with its links-style characteristics, but the massive nearby mansions facing the ocean, fresh air and the area’s rich history from golf to the America’s Cup yacht races and playground for the country’s aristocrats, made it a respite from the everyday mundane nature of the PGA Tour.

So, when the USGA announced it was rescheduling the U.S. Senior Open at Newport for 2024 – it was supposed to host in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic intervened – Barlow was overjoyed. Having recently turned 50, he wouldn’t have been eligible four years ago.

“When I saw it on the [USGA championship] schedule, I put my blinders on and told myself ‘I’ve got to get there,’” said the 51-year-old Barlow. “In my opinion, this is the way golf is meant to be played. It’s not manufactured.”

Barlow is one of six competitors in this week’s 156-player field who competed in the 1995 U.S. Amateur, which was a celebration of the USGA’s centennial and also held at Newport C.C. The others are Notah Begay III, 1994 U.S. Amateur runner-up Trip Kuehne, Chris Riley, Matthew Goggin, of Australia, and Christian Raynor.

Barlow and Raynor, then a standout at Florida State University, failed to qualify for match play, while Goggin, the son of 1981 U.S. Women’s Amateur runner-up Lindy Goggin, reached the final 16 along with Riley. Kuehne and Begay III, teammates on the 1995 USA Walker Cup Team with Riley who would lose in Wales a few weeks later, bowed out in the Round of 32. Begay’s Stanford teammate, Tiger Woods, would claim his second consecutive Havemeyer Trophy, named after the USGA’s first president and Newport member, with a 2-up victory over George “Buddy” Marucci.

More than 50 competitors from that U.S. Amateur tried to qualify for the 44th U.S. Senior Open, yet only these six managed to advance.

This is only the fifth USGA championship to be conducted at Newport, one of the USGA’s five founding clubs. It hosted the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open in 1895, then waited 100 years to have the U.S. Amateur. In 2006, World Golf Hall of Famer and one of the game’s greatest players, Annika Sorenstam, defeated Pat Hurst in an 18-hole Monday playoff to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

Interestingly enough, the USGA just conducted its 1,000th championship at Pinehurst two weeks ago with Bryson DeChambeau winning a memorable U.S. Open. Now, as if the symmetry can’t be any more perfect, Newport gets to kick off the next millennium of USGA competitions.

“It’s the grandeur of the venue,” said Begay. “The USGA does a wonderful job of this when the venue takes center stage. That’s not often the case when Tiger is in the field [like he was in 1995]. The [Beaux Arts-style] clubhouse, the location and the roots of the game … it’s places like this that really hold a special place in golf.”

When the game’s best amateurs assembled at Newport in 1995, they found a course that was so brown from a hot and dry summer that Goggins said you could see sand and dirt flying when shots were hit from the fairways. That’s because the club is one of the few that doesn’t irrigate the course outside of greens and teeing areas. Otherwise, it’s whatever Mother Nature offers. It reminded Goggin of courses he played in Great Britain during his 1995 summer amateur tour.

Earlier that year, the native of Hobart in Tasmania, an island off Australia’s southeast coast, won his country’s national amateur, earning him some invites to major competitions in the United Kingdom and Canada. The rules regarding amateurs were far different then – this was way before Name, Image and Likeness deals or players being able to accept free equipment – as Goggin had to pay out of pocket for his expenses during his time in the United States. The R&A, which governs the game everywhere but the U.S. and Mexico, allowed Goggin to accept expense money to play in the Canadian Amateur and select U.K. events. The USGA’s rules regarding amateurs were different.

Nevertheless, Goggin decided to play the Porter Cup in Lewiston, N.Y., and the Western Amateur in Michigan as well as try to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. The World Amateur Golf Ranking® had not been established, so international players needed to qualify to compete in the U.S. Amateur, unless they were members of the Walker Cup teams or had won The Amateur Championship. Goggin squeezed in a 36-hole qualifier between the Porter Cup and Western Amateur, then advanced to the Round of 16 at Newport C.C., losing to Mark Plummer, 2 and 1.

With his talent, Goggin was certainly a target for American college coaches – Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Arizona showed interest – but once he was accepted into the Australian Institute for Sport, he remained in Australia, getting high-quality coaching and guidance as if he were in college minus the academics.

Four years later, he moved to the U.S. to compete on the Web.com (now Korn Ferry) Tour and later PGA Tour; the five-time Web.com winner currently resides in Charlotte, N.C. Having celebrated his 50th birthday 13 days ago, Goggin didn’t pass up a chance to play Newport again, shooting an impressive 63 at Florence (S.C.) Country Club on May 30 that matched the lowest score every posted in qualifying.

Ditto for Kuehne. The 52-year-old Texan, who qualified for the last year’s U.S. Senior Open in his first year of eligibility, arrived at Newport in the summer of 1995 with much more fanfare than a year earlier when he saw Woods rally from an early 6-down deficit to defeat him in the 36-hole final at TPC Sawgrass. That spring, he had helped Oklahoma State win its eighth NCAA title and played in the Masters.

Trip Kuehne and his family of USGA golf champions have a fondness for the rich history at Newport C.C., where he had an earlier-than-expected exit from match play in the 1995 U.S. Amateur. (USGA/Jonathan Ernst)

But Kuehne ran into Mark Wilson in the Round of 32 and fell to the future five-time PGA Tour winner who had lost to Woods in the 1992 U.S. Junior Amateur final. Kuehne would eventually join little brother Henry, and little sister Kelli, as a USGA champion, making the Kuehne clan the only family with three siblings to have won USGA titles. Henry won the 1998 U.S. Amateur at Oak Hill C.C. with Trip on the bag, and Kelli won the 1994 U.S. Girls’ Junior and 1995 and 1996 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the former at another USGA founding club, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Trip’s title would come in the 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Bandon Dunes, which would be his last USGA event in a decade, as he “retired” from competitive golf to watch son, Will, play high school and Division I college football at North Texas and later at Southern Methodist University (he was a quarterback).

With Will set to tackle his first post-college job, Trip, a career amateur, decided to rev up his golf game again, hoping to rekindle the past magic that made him a three-time USA Walker Cupper and low amateur in the 2003 U.S. Open. His goal this week is to join Marvin “Vinny” Giles and Jeff Wilson as the only players to have earned low-amateur honors in a U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open.

He couldn’t think of a better venue to do it at.

“The greatest people in golf have done exceptional things here, which makes it even more special,” said Kuehne, who in 2005 founded Double Eagle Capital, an investment capital firm based in Westlake, Texas.

The USGA even made the week a bit more special by pairing the three past 1995 Walker Cup teammates Begay, Kuehne and Riley for the first two rounds. Despite the 4-point loss at Royal Porthcawl in Wales on a team that included Tiger Woods, all three had an amazing week overseas. Golf and other life pursuits have made reunions a little more challenging. Riley, a 1989 U.S. Junior Amateur semifinalist who starred at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and Begay, who won the 1994 NCAA title at Stanford University, competed on the PGA Tour for more than a decade. Riley, a member of the 2004 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, captured one PGA Tour win before retiring after the 2016 campaign to become the head men’s golf coach at the University of San Diego.

Riley, who lost in the Round of 16 to Duke Delcher in the 1995 U.S. Amateur, enjoyed his seven seasons at USD, leading the Toreros to five NCAA Regional appearances and a berth in the 2021 NCAA Championship. He was named the WCC Coach of the Year for the 2023-24 season. But with the demands of Division I coaching ever-changing with NIL, the transfer portal and fundraising, the job responsibilities had changed drastically since 2017. Only 15 percent of the job, Riley said, was actually about coaching. Plus, his daughter, Taylor, is a rising junior on the golf team at Louisiana State University, where his wife, Michelle, played for three seasons, and another daughter, Rose, just graduated from Point Loma High in San Diego. He’ll continue at USD as a consulting third assistant while pondering other professional opportunities, which could include more competitive events. His last USGA championship was the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

“I loved it,” said Riley of coaching. “That was kind of a hard decision. At the same time, it was an easy decision because it turned into an 80-hour a week job. Fundraising is big. The transfer portal. It was just a lot more than I bargained for when I signed up [in 2017].”

Begay comes into his second U.S. Senior Open fresh off a pair of top-20 finishes at the Principal Charity Classic (T-18) and Dick’s Open (T-16). He’s hoping momentum turns into a solid performance on a course he knows well.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love going down Memory Lane,” said Begay. “But we’re here to win and compete.”

Barlow was set to join Riley at UNLV after spending a couple of seasons at Taft (Calif.) Junior College. But he wound up never playing for the Rebels, with the 1995 U.S. Amateur his final amateur competition. From 1998 to 2011 he competed on both the Nationwide (KFT) Tour and PGA Tour, with his lone victory coming at the eGolf Tour’s ArrowCreek Open in 2014. He qualified for six U.S. Opens, the last in 2014 at Pinehurst. He’s currently the director of instruction at the Lake Las Vegas Golf Academy, where he’s mentored players as young as 12.

While on tour, he fell in love with Pebble Beach for obvious reasons, but Newport is not far behind in the pecking order, especially with its historic context.

“In Vegas, we have some very nice golf courses, but everything has been manufactured,” said Barlow, donning a Newport Country Club-logoed polo during Tuesday’s practice round. “That’s modern golf. The trenches down No. 1 [at Newport] are from the Revolutionary War. The fairways have these little dips. They were filled in when [architect A.W. Tillinghast designed] the [current] golf course [in 1923], but those used to be trenches for the Revolutionary War. That’s the kind of stuff you can’t make up.”

10 AARP benefits all seniors should know

By Angelica Leicht

As we transition into retirement and our senior years, our needs and priorities will typically experience a significant shift — as will the challenges we face, from healthcare concerns to financial planning, social engagement and maintaining independence. That's why, during this phase of life, it's crucial to find the right resources and support systems to help navigate these new circumstances.

Recognizing the unique needs of older adults, numerous organizations have emerged to cater specifically to seniors. These groups offer various services, from advocacy and education to discounts and social opportunities. Among these organizations, though, one name stands out: AARP.

AARP describes itself as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. But while AARP's name recognition is widespread, many seniors — and even some long-time members — may not be fully aware of the extensive range of benefits and services the organization offers. So, if you're a senior who's been wondering what AARP can offer you, it helps to know some key membership benefits.

Find out how an AARP membership could benefit you here .

There are a few different benefits that seniors can access by joining AARP, including:

Insurance options

Having access to affordable insurance options becomes crucial during your senior years. And, that's one area where AARP shines. AARP offers a variety of insurance options tailored to seniors' needs, including supplemental health insurance, dental and vision coverage, life insurance , long-term care insurance and auto insurance . These insurance options are geared toward providing coverage for conditions that become more common with age, helping seniors maintain comprehensive protection without excessive financial burden.

Explore the many perks that come with joining AARP during your senior years .

Healthcare savings

Many seniors live on fixed incomes , making healthcare expenses a significant concern. But members of AARP can access significant discounts on prescription drugs, hearing aids and vision care, including glasses and contact lenses. These savings can be imperative for seniors living on fixed incomes, as healthcare expenses can be a major concern. And, by reducing the cost of essential health-related items, AARP helps seniors maintain their health and well-being without costing too much.

Travel benefits

Retirement often means more time for travel, but doing so can be expensive. To help, AARP provides travel-related discounts on hotels, rental cars and cruises, as well as a roadside assistance program and travel planning resources. These perks are particularly valuable for retirees, who typically have more time to travel but may be conscious of the related expenses. For example, these discounts can make it more affordable for seniors to explore new places and visit loved ones or offer peace of mind for those who enjoy road trips.

Financial services

Financial security is often a top concern for seniors. AARP members can ensure that their finances are in check by taking advantage of member perks like free financial health check-ups, identity theft protection services, unique credit card options with cashback rewards and discounts on tax preparation services.

These offerings are beneficial because they help seniors address the financial security concerns many will face during that point in their lives. These services can, for example, help members manage their money more effectively and protect their assets, with identity theft protection being particularly valuable as seniors may be  targeted by scammers .

Technology assistance

In an increasingly digital world, staying connected is vital — and that's equally true for seniors. AARP can help provide that with access to tech support for computers, smartphones and other devices, as well as online learning resources for improving digital skills. This support can be invaluable because it lets seniors navigate new technologies, enabling them to stay in touch with family, access online services and feel more confident in their tech abilities, all of which is crucial for maintaining independence and connectivity.

Entertainment, shopping and dining discounts

AARP members can take advantage of the discounts offered at restaurants and at movie theaters or other entertainment venues. These benefits encourage seniors to stay socially active and engaged, which is crucial for mental health and overall well-being. And, by making outings and cultural experiences more affordable, AARP helps seniors maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle.

Another benefit that AARP offers is savings at various retailers, both in-store and online, including discounts on groceries and everyday items. These discounts help seniors stretch fixed incomes further, allowing them to maintain their quality of life and afford both necessities and small luxuries. This can make a significant difference in seniors' day-to-day lives and overall financial comfort.

Legal services

Members of AARP also have access to free or discounted legal advice and assistance with estate planning and will preparation. Legal services can be prohibitively expensive, so these benefits make it easier for seniors to handle important legal matters, ensuring their wishes are properly documented and their rights are protected.

Education and career resources

Many seniors choose to work part-time or start new careers in retirement to earn some extra money . AARP can also help in this area. For example, the organization provides access to job boards specializing in age-friendly employers, online courses and skills training and resume review services. Taking advantage of these resources can, in turn, help seniors stay competitive in the job market and find fulfilling work opportunities, which can be financially and personally rewarding.

Fitness and wellness resources

Staying active is crucial for maintaining health and independence as we age, and it can be easier for AARP members to do that, as membership offers them access to gym membership discounts and wellness programs and resources. These perks make it more affordable for seniors to prioritize their physical and mental well-being, encouraging a healthier and more active lifestyle.

Home and auto services

Seniors can also get discounts through AARP on home security systems , moving services and storage and even auto repair discounts. These services address some common needs of seniors, from ensuring home safety to managing moves and maintaining vehicles, often at reduced costs. These benefits can be particularly helpful for seniors who are looking to age in place or those transitioning to new living arrangements.

The bottom line

An AARP membership can offer big benefits to seniors — including, but not limited to, the ones outlined above. So, if you're a senior who's been on the fence about joining, it can be a smart move to make between the discounts, the resources and the other perks an AARP membership offers.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

2 books offer just the right summer mix of humor and nostalgia

Maureen Corrigan

Maureen Corrigan

Sandwich, by Catherine Newman

Sandwich Harper Collins hide caption

Summer reading. For me, those words suggest an unhurried expanse of time to lose myself in a good story — fiction or nonfiction. Save the dystopian novels till the fall, please; right now, I want books that glimmer like fireflies with dashes of humor and nostalgia. I’ve just read two that fit those summery specifications.

Catherine Newman’s new novel is called Sandwich , after the town on Cape Cod where her characters have rented a cottage for one precious week every summer for the past 20 years. The title also winks at the situation of our main character, Rachel, nicknamed “Rocky” who’s “halfway in age between her young adult children and her elderly parents” — all of whom crowd into that ramshackle cottage.

In the opening scene of Sandwich Rocky’s husband, Nicky, stands paralyzed, plunger in hand, before the cottage’s single, overflowing old toilet. As Rocky’s vacation week progresses, other things also slosh and overflow: secrets; messy emotions, like anger and shame; and, as Rocky tells us, her own aging body:

An illustration of a person reading a book in the grass.

Books We Love

NPR staffers pick their favorite fiction reads of 2024

Menopause feels like a slow leak: thoughts leaking out of your head; flesh leaking out of your skin; fluid leaking out of your joints. You need a lube job, is how you feel. Bodywork.

Newman elegantly segues from Nora Ephron -like comic passages like that one to elegy. To return to the same place every summer, after all, is to be periodically brought up short by the passage of time. In the middle of the novel, for instance, Rocky uses another metaphor to describe her position in her family and this time her tone is infused with anticipatory grief:

Life is a seesaw, and I am standing dead center, still and balanced: living kids on one side, living parents on the other. Nicky here with me at the fulcrum. Don’t move a muscle, I think. But I will, of course. You have to.

Sandwich is my idea of the perfect summer novel: shimmering and substantive. One more aspect of Newman’s book deserves highlighting: like many other recent novels by best-selling female authors — I’m thinking of Jennifer Weiner , Ann Patchett and Megan Abbott — Newman introduces a storyline here about abortion. She writes about that contested subject — and the emotions it engenders — in a way that I’ve never encountered in fiction before.

When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion, by Julie Satow

When Women Ran Fifth Avenue Doubleday hide caption

As a city kid who grew up in an apartment without air-conditioning, I have happy memories of seeking relief from the heat by wandering around grand New York department stores like Bloomingdale's, Macy’s and B. Altman. Julie Satow’s new narrative history, called When Women Ran Fifth Avenue , is a treat for anyone like me who yearns to time travel back to some of those palaces of consumption at the height of their grandeur. But even more revelatory are the stories Satow excavates of the women who presided over three of the greatest and now-vanished New York department stores: Bonwit Teller, Lord & Taylor and Henri Bendel.

Geraldine Stutz rescued Bendel’s in the 1960s — as shopping moved to the suburbs -- by turning its small size into an advantage: creating exclusive boutiques within the store that attracted customers like Gloria Vanderbilt , Cher and Barbra Streisand . Some 30 years earlier, Dorothy Shaver of Lord & Taylor, who Life Magazine dubbed America’s "No. 1 Career Woman” revolutionized fashion by championing the sporty “American Look” at a time when French designers held sway.

But the stand-out figure of the trio is Hortense Odlum, a self-described “housewife” whose husband bought a near-bankrupt and “sagging” Bonwit Teller during the Great Depression and asked her to visit the store to judge it with a woman’s eye. One of her first smash successes was the introduction of a “hat department” on the main floor. In 1934, Hortense became the first woman president of an American department store.

Two summer suspense novels delight in overturning the 'woman-in-trouble' plot

Satow specializes in entertaining cultural histories — her previous book was a history of New York’s Plaza Hotel. Here, she intersperses descriptions of such wonders as Salvador Dali-designed window displays at Bonwit’s with accounts of the racism pervasive in these department stores.

For those readers immune to the allure of shopping or the shore, be assured that more of summer reading recommendations — especially mysteries and crime novels — are coming your way. You can also see what NPR staff and critics are recommending here.

The great wealth transfer is happening but not in the way you think.

The Great Wealth Transfer includes giving while living and multigenerational travel is a gift that ... [+] older generations are giving to their families and to themselves.

What is considered the greatest transfer of wealth in history is happening today—one family at a time, from one generation to the next. According to a study by Edward Jones , in collaboration with NEXT iShares Exponential Technologies ETF 360 Partners and Morning Consult, nearly a third of Americans have or will be receiving an inheritance. Among those anticipating one, nearly half expect it will come within the next 10 years, marking what many have dubbed the Great Wealth Transfer.

According to Cerulli , the Great Wealth Transfer is the forecasted hand-off of trillions of dollars from the older Silent Generation and aging Baby Boomers to their young Generation-X, Millennial, and Generation-Z adult children and grandchildren over the next 20 years. Cerulli pegs the transfer to come mostly from Boomers totaling nearly $84 trillion, with about $72 trillion going to heirs and $12 trillion to charities. That’s a lot of money. Well, it may not all be money. The Great Wealth Transfer will include cash, equities, real estate and other forms of wealth, as well as, for many, memories. Adult children assuming an eventual transition of wealth may be feeling uncertainty on what, how, and in what form the exchange may take place.

"Talking with loved ones and planning ahead are the most important parts of the wealth transfer process," says Lena Haas, Principal, Wealth Management Advice and Solutions at Edward Jones. "Having a transparent conversation with family members and developing a clear plan can make all the difference between the legacy of love and care, and the legacy of potential hurt and confusion."

The Great Wealth Transfer is happening now but not entirely in the way you think it might happen. Yes, there will be wealth in the traditional sense, but many aging Boomers have other ideas, including shared family travel and experiences they and their families can enjoy today, together.

Giving While Living

While not discussed very often or loudly, the Great Wealth Transfer is about the passing of more than money; it is as much about the passing away of grandparents and parents. Many older adults are not waiting for their existential end to give. Instead, many are choosing a different strategy outside the traditional hand-offs of wealth memorialized in wills and trusts, they are choosing giving while living.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Giving while living is not a new idea. Without thinking about it, parents routinely redirect savings that might have gone to retirement and family wealth to their children’s college funds. Later, those same parents may pay for weddings. Parents and grandparents may help purchase a new home for a young couple. However, a trend that has gained significant momentum is the shared gift of travel.

Multigenerational Travel

Travel has exploded since the end of the pandemic. Call it revenge travel, but every generation is eager to hit the roads and runways. One key trend in the travel industry is multigenerational travel, where typically older adults organize, finance, share experiences, and make memories with their adult children and grandchildren.

According to Jim Staples, president of Orbridge , a destination travel specialty firm, “One of the biggest trends we are seeing is that generational travel has increased substantially. Boomers are bringing big and small family groups more on experiences.”

The 2023 U.S. Family Travel Association Survey of 3,300 parents and grandparents indicates that 50% of those surveyed have taken a multigenerational trip in the last three years. Moreover, more than half (54%), particularly grandparents, report being the primary planner and organizer of the trip. A full 50% of respondents indicate they pay for the trips with children and grandchildren, while another 48% say they share the costs with family, with only 1% reporting that their children pay for the trip.

For aging Boomers, travel is not about the trip but about using wealth today to give a gift of shared experiences and making memories together as a family. As Orbridge’s Staples notes, “We hear from our clients over and over that the parents or grandparents want to experience this (travel) alongside their family. People view travel as a way to connect, create and share memories, and bond. As those with the financial resources age, they want this bonding time with their children and grandchildren…experiencing something brand new at their older age with the people they love is irreplaceable.”

It may not just be adult children and grandchildren on mom’s and dad’s travel manifest. Staples notes that, “Momentum can build in these family departures where once a portion of the family commits to a departure, sometimes extended family members, cousins, nieces, etc., then choose to join the departure as well, so as not to miss out on making memories."

But hold on, before Millennial and Gen-Z adult children pack their bags to hit the road with mom and dad, they might have to wait their turn. According to AARP, “skip-gen” travel may be on the rise. In a 2019 survey , 61% of grandparents reported being interested in vacationing with grandchildren alone and skipping the middle generation.

The Great Wealth Transfer will undoubtedly live up to its name in the coming decades; it will be a great volume of wealth. However, the popular imagery of large checks, homes, or portfolios being the only wealth transferred is not incorrect as much as it is incomplete. Giving while living is a gift that aging parents and grandparents may provide to their families but is also something that they can enjoy while here. The shared family experiences, memories, heartfelt conversations, hugs, and inevitable selfies often accompanying a family trip are real wealth that cannot be quantified.
